HG Zaku II Char's Custom

Guy 'A' has not found his Gunpla momentum after the completion of his HGUC Gundam RX-78-2, so his fellow comrades of Team 06th OCC had lent their helping hands to the squad leader. Basically, I lack the stamina on snap-fit process hence Eric took charge of it. I'm in-charge of subsequent processes like filing, penal lining, adding the decal and finishing it with a topcoat. This is pretty much a simple kit with 3 standard weapons of Zaku. The rifle, bazooka and the iconic heat axe. The kit comes with optional hands and a one-and-only piece of sticker for the mono-eye. Bandai should be more generous with more stickers instead. Good thing I have some spare water-slide decals for this Zaku II. I don't have Char's insignia for the shoulder armour plate so instead I put a Zeon emblem on it. I had the rifle and bazooka sprayed grey and extra effort were put in on the heat axe. I sprayed it purple and used yellow paint marker for the blade. Sieg Zeon!

I have chosen this figure for review as a Chinese New Year 2012 special, based on its auspicious colour. I bought this figurine of Tiger Wong aka Wong Xiao Hu, after having watched the live-action movie whereby the character was played by Nicholas Tse. The movie whereby the title, a direct translation of the comic 'Dragon Tiger Gate' was an adaptation of a long running Chinese comic since 1970s. The young Wong has a strong sense of justice and is specialised with kicking techniques. His signature move is '18 Dragon Slayer Kicks' & ' Thunder Lighting Kick'.

The toy was released in 2002 catered to the Hong Kong market as a Trading figure in blind toy. It resemble the comic image of Dragon Wong wearing his iconic red singlet with star on the chest. The figure was nicely sculpted with a Wong still looking good even on close-up shots. The thick eye-brown of the character was also clearly defined. The hunky figure of Dragon Wong gave pride to Chinese comic and Hong Kong toy maker. This is one figure that's now extreme rare and definitely one of the best memorabilia of 'Dragon Tiger Gate'.

Macross: Customised SDF-1

My customisation of the 1/3000 scale Matchbox release of SDF-1, TV version to movie version. The idea came after seeing the toy turning yellow. I had spent 3 nights on this project from stripping the stickers, unscrewing the parts, spraying, hand painting, and finally reapplying the stickers. I was a bit rush on this project cos I wanted to give the toy a change before this Chinese NewYear, therefore I wasn't completely satisfied due to some washy finishing. Nevertheless, in overall, the end result is better than the yellowing state and it kind of look pretty decent on display. I had used prime grey epoxy paint for the overall colour. Had then hand painted the command bridge with naval blue and yellow paint. Some of the old stickers had been repaired with double-sided tape before reapplying them. The new Macross stickers are from 1/60 Yamato valkyrie.

Wusong BB Kit

I got this from a friend with much anticipation judging from the artwork on the box (Wusong, the tiger slayer from Water Margin). To my disappointment, this is a knockoff product of BB Sangokuden Ryubi Gundam. I was fool into thinking that this company "DECOOL" had come up with a kit that's indifferent and innovative. The kit wasn't even close to what it was shown on the artwork. I had searched online for the company's origin only to find a Youtube video of "DECOOL" imitation Lego product. After assembly, the kit looked exactly like a green variant of Ryubi Gundam. Since I'm blogging about it, I may as well spent a little more time in giving the kit some touch up. I have taken some pics of this bootleg with the authentic Ryubi Gundam for a comparison. My apologises for misleading you and would to emphasized that this is NOT an official product of Bandai. Any comments?

Chogokin Zeta Gundam (Green Divers)

Zeta Gundam (Green Divers version) is very much a MSV assigned to Amuro Ray, after Kamille Bidan eliminated the Titans in Zeta Gundam series. The MS made its screen appearance on Evolve 9, showing how this MS defended Jaburo. The design is the same as the Zeta used by Kamille Bidan instead that it was given a dash of fresh greyish colour scheme with some purple and of course the insignia of the Amuro Ray on the left shoulder plate. Chogokin Zeta Gundam ( Green Diver) was released in 2003 as an Expo exclusives. You can say it's rather rare and premium these days. The packaging is similar to the regular release with the artwork coloured in purple. Everything else in terms of accessories are also the same. It's fully transformable to 'Wave Rider' and comes with the Hyper-Mega-Launcher as well.

Lucky☆Star : Izumi Konata Swim Suit Figure & T-Shirt

Taking an open approach to toys in 2012, I will not restrict myself to just toy of a particular genre, so bear with me if you are only interested in Gundam. It is for the benefit of the general toy community. Well, you need not have to wait forever cos the next post will be a Gundam. Hee! Hee!

I was on holiday with my kampong "family" to Batam island last November and as usual, I had brought along some figurines that I could squeeze into my luggage bag. So what did I bring? It's this HGIF gasaphon figure of Izumi Konata from 'Lucky☆Star', in her grade 6th school swimsuit. Konata made her appearance in this swimsuit, in episode 6 of 'Lucky☆Star' anime when the gals went on a beach vacation. It's also in this episode the anime did a parody of Initial D.

The gasaphon had brought out the kawaii...ness in Konata from her mole, her lips to the Jap wordings on her swimsuit. The legs of the figure can't be bended but the arms and head can be rotated 360 degrees for more posabilities. Since Konata is in her swimsuit, I brought her to the hotel swimming pool for some outdoor action.

On top of all, I had also worn my 'Lucky☆Star' T-shirt by Cospa, which I had bought from 'The Anime Shop'. My wifee was on her wit again to make me pose in-front of the camera in my new T-Shirt and Konata figure in my hand.

Banpresto Macross VF-1J

A budget toy released in 2002 by Banpresto to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Macross. It was kept a long time in my closet till I recently decided to have a feel of it. The toy was attractive at first sight, flattering that it actually transforms. There's a window showing the actual toy and all the accessories that come with it. Accessories included a rifle, optional fists as well as the head of a VF-1S & VF-1A so you would think it's value for money. A rather small toy standing approximately 13cm in battroid mode, it was secured on a big plastic insert so the box interior is very much hollow.

Upon handling the toy, I could feel how fragile the plastic is, but at least there isn't any yellowing. Transforming it is like taking care of a patient in intensive care and I actually broke the clip securing the cockpit cover (had repaired it with plastic cement). I have to compliment the toy for its articulation as the toy did pose well in Gerwalk mode as the legs can be spread nicely apart. In conclusion, I would think this toy is still a good collection taking into considerate the low price of less than S$20/-. My advise is that it's best that the toy remains inside the box.

I have just upgraded my handphone from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4S. Like always, I have faithfully stick to my favourite classic white. Though there are reviews about the 4S being a letdown gadget of 2011, I still think it suits me well with better built-in camera and faster processing speed. As for 'Siri', it seems that she couldn't understand my Singlish... Lol... Anyway, to make the phone more personalised, I have ordered a Gundam protective case from Ebay. Operation 'iGundam' has commenced!

The winner goes to 1/100 Customized Powered GM

Made this my undisputed champion for 2011 because it's more than just a toy (In my context, giving model kits the same competition platform with toy). It's a combination of regular Gunpla with bash kit, plus a lot of my effort put in. My very own 1/100 Powered GM from Gundam 0083.

2nd Spot: Macross Frontier - VB-6 Konig Monster MKII

Definitely a well made heavy duty mecha toy that gave knockout punches to other toys below its ranking. Unique Macross toy other than just valkyries. High quality and the devilishly sexy nose art of Sheryl Nome melts me down.

3rd Placing: Robot Damashii GM Sniper II

Finally a figure of GM Sniper II that ended my long.... long.... wait. Before then, Bandai has never produced this mobile suit in toy, not even as model kit. This figure with great articulation came as a surprise.

4th: Macross - 1/6 Minmay Figure

A figure that stood against the advance technology of figurine these days. Brought back memories of the first Macross songstress and glory of the movie and OST "Do You Remember Love"

5th: MG RGM Type-C (Space Type)

A must have for GM lover like me. For its ideal 1/00 scale for display and simplicity. Looks fabulous with touch-up and water slide decals.

6th: Evangelion - Rei Ayanami Figure (School Uniform)

Hard to resist this innocent look of Ayanami Rei in school uniform, kind of more girl-next-door image. The sculpt and the paint works are utmost impressive for a budget figure.

7th: Record of Lodoss War - Parn Figure

Though it's just a simple figure, this figure is an important memorabilia for me cos I love the anime dearly. The figure of parn was produced in limit quantity and this is rare find. Quality figure by Tomy.

8th: MG GM Version 1.0

The original GM and one my first few MG kits which provided me a lot of fun experimenting with Gunpla.

9th: Jumbo Grade Zeta Gundam

In the top ten spot cos size does matter! The toy that became the centre of attraction on my display.

10th: Street Fighter - Nash/Charlie Figure

Managed to squeeze into the top ten spot not for its quality. It's more of a personal preference cos I like the character a lot and this is the only figure that's available in the market. Thank you Desmond again for sourcing the dog-tag for me. It really added more realism.

It's has been another great year for me having new toys, going to toy events, meeting up with toy enthusiasts and having the spare time to even do some model kits of my own. It's the time of the year to say goodbye to 2011 and my last post for 2011 will conclude with the top ten toys which I had reviewed this year. Thank you for all the support, you guys had given me and I wish you all a even better year ahead with blooming toy collection. Toast to 2012!

One of those bigger toy in my collection this should be the biggest Nu Gundam toy you can find selling till date. One that's awesome either playing with or putting on display. I had two of these but had recently sold one to a friend to clear some spaces cos the box is this toy is gigantic. The toy itself stands approximately 13". Some straight forward assembling are required for the rifle and fin funnels, but be assured that you will get to play the toy in no time. Beam sabers (Both normal and boost-up) and bazooka (Able to latch on the backpack) are also included among the accessories. Niche mechanism of the toy is that the funnels are foldable and can be attached together and onto the backpack. There's no need to apply stickers since the toy already come with decal-imprint. Man! I love the Amuro Ray's insignia on the shield. I bet Guy 'A' would be thrilled to see this post cos Nu Gundam has been one of his favourite Gundam.

Known as the 1/6 P.V.C Hi-Quality Figure, this huge 29cm figure of the iconic songstress Lynn Minmay, in concert suit during her appearance in the movie 'Do You Remember Love', was released during Macross 20th Anniversary. This vintage fixed pose figure cost a less premium price compared to most anime figures nowadays without the details being compromise. Those big round eyes of Minmay look great and the big ribbon made her the best kawaii present. Ima Anatano Sugata Mieru translated as 'I can see you now' when Minmay was in this pose. Came in a blister card, this figure has accessories like a frame card of Millia (I wonder why not Minmay, but I still like) and a stand base for support. I would say this my first serious attempt blogging on non-mecha stuff of Macross, Minmay Attack! I love you sooo........

Chogokin Zeta Gundam

I'm slowly replacing my collection of chogokin Gundam on display cabinet to built Gunpla. At the same time, I had taken some pics of my chogokin Gundam for documentation and list them on Ebay Singapore. Fortunately, I had found a new owner of this Zeta Gundam despite its mild yellowing condition. The box artwork shows mainly how the toy look like with a touch of blue background. Instead of styrofoam tray, the figure and accessories rest on clear plastic insert. Basic accessories like optional hands, shield, beam sabers and beam rifle are included. An additional throw-in is certainly the Hyper-Mega-Launcher which I find rather challenging to strike a pose of Zeta holding it in good balance. The biggest gimmick of this 1/144 scale toy with metal composite, is that it transforms between MS (Mobile Suit) to Wave Rider (Flight mode). The design of Zeta differ from convention Gundam and quite a breakthrough in transformable MS production during U.C timeline. Still I would still prefer Zeta Gundam in robot mode cos most of the transformable mecha in Gundam series, look kind of weird to me in flight mode. Maybe, I'm just being biases....

Beside the physical shop, local anime fans can also access to their website www.theanimehouse.com to pre-order or buy their lovely items online and self collect from the shop thereafter. The scale of the shop ain't big, still you would be spending much time inside if you are an anime fan. I had recently dropped by the shop and found out that COSPA T-shirts were on sale, going at two T-shirts for only S$15. There's quite a steal as such T-shirts usually cost 2900 yen per piece and you can trust on the quality. Some of the other stuff KKnm has include mug, Iphone casing, magazine, keychains, bookmark, banner, towels, earpiece, trading cards, figurines & etc

There’s a change in Ayanami Rei’s attire other that the usual plug-suit you normally see in Evangelion. This figure of Ayanami Rei that was released as a Sega prize packed in blister card. It was released along side with Asuka Langley in school uniform too, obviously I prefer Rei more. The figure stands around 7” but is non poseable. It’s not able to stand on its own unless anchored to the diorama ruins stand that comes with it. Personally, I like the innocent look of Ayanami Rei in school uniform, kind of more girl-next-door image. The paint works are superb and Rei looks relax from her expression like as though she’s enjoying the breeze. The stand on the other hand, reminds me of the destruction caused during the battle against the ‘Angels’ in the anime.

Shin Ryubi Gundam

It's kind of hard to resist not getting more of these adorable SD Sangokuden kits especially when I continue to watch the anime series from where I stopped after the battle of Hu Lao Gate. This time round, I'm charmed by the lead character Ryubi Gundam. Ryubi Gundam takes the basic design of RX-78-2 and the role as the heroic Liu Bei in 'Romance of The Three Kingdom'. In Sangokuden aka 'Brave Battle Warriors', Ryubi is compassionate towards the people of Mirisha. Wielding his two sabers Dragon Fang (Garyuutou) & Claw (Souryuutou), Ryubi defended his people with his strong sense of justice together with his sworn brothers. Also not to forget the powerful Imperial Dragon Sword (Tengyokugai) which his mentor Cannon GM Lu Zhi, had entrusted him, after seeing his potential. Imperial Dragon Sword becomes more fearsome when Ryubi Gundam fused with the Imperial Seal (Tengyokugai), riding the Celestial Armour Dragon. I have spent a little more time on this kit, carefully painted it with gold, silver, red and white marker. At certain point, I had to use toothpicks dipped with paint to touch up fine contours. A bit of panel lining before a matt top-coat. Ryubi Gundam looks cool riding White Silver Comet Horse (Hakugin Ryuuseiba) that I had built previous and even more awesome when I placed Ryubi Gundam on the Celestial armour that came with Ryofu Tallgeese kit. The whole combination are perfect!

AFA 2011 can never be completed without the support of cosplayers and their crews. This last post of the event is a tribute to these dedicated people. At the event, you will be sure to bump into these gorgeous cosplayers right from entrance/exit and the convention hall. One of my biggest find was the Green Power Ranger and my favourite ranger had given me his most fearsome pose. As I roamed around the event hall, I had approached cosplayers for a photo and even some may not be cosplaying, they looked really cute and they were sporting enough for phototaking. Before leaving, I saw even more cosplayers one level below AFA convention hall posing for photographers and so I joined in to take more pics for you guys. Lol...

The fame of Hatsune Miku is truly unstoppable to an extend that she's practically at every corner of AFA 2011. This Vocaloid is bigger than just a game character now, she has arisen to a virtual idol who is able to even hold live concerts. This phenomenon reminds me of 'Sharon Apple' in Macross Plus whereby virtual idol overshadowed real performers. It's amazing to see how Japanese culture had influenced us and brought us another step closer to realizing that foresight in anime. I'm not a fan of Haysune Miku yet (Not for now...Not sure in the future) besides listening to her catchy songs. Indeed a well-designed and marketed character that's definitely an eye candy at any anime events.

This station may just occupied a small section @ AFA 2011 within Bandai exhibition area, but it was definitely engaging and one that had stalled a lot of my time. It gave visitors the chance to have a feel of Gundam 'The Robot Spirits' in action. The backdrops, figures and lamps had provided a conducive environment for photo enthusiasts to strike poses of Gundam and make their very own special photo. I must confessed that I haven't been following Danny Choo's blog these days but I have shared my admiration and respected the celebrity blogger for promoting anime, culture and trends in Japan, reaching out to people outside Japan during the era when anime/manga/cosplay were very much unheard-of in South East Asia, the stone-age before there is even AFA in Singapore. It's really an achievement for a blogger have come this far to create a mascot 'Mirai Suenaga' that appeals to many and eventually gotten marketed as Figma figurines, collector cards, computer keyboard cover, IPad application to car artwork. What's more, Danny Choo himself was present @ AFA 2011 to grace the event and penning his signature for fans.

Watching anime is never enough for most fans as we all wanted something more, like memorabilia in remembrance of those sweet moments and feelings from the anime. Usually at toy or anime fair like AFA, the atmosphere kind of set you in the mood of spending. Something I learned from watching 'Lucky Star' : "Always bring enough cash along cos you never know what would catch your eyes" & "If you already set your mind on the event exclusives, planned your route on getting to the respective shops fast and be at venue early". It was really crowded to AFA 2011 when I was there on the second day. Most of the exclusives were already sold out but there were still many anxious folks queuing to enter these anime merchandise shops. My god...

ps: Sorry for the delayed post on AFA 2011 and the reason was becos both AFA 2011 & Gunpla Expo 2011 were held only days apart and I had to priorities my posts.

Ok, I got it! Life will be dull with just Gunpla and no gals. Very thoughtful of the organizer to incorporate Gundam Image Girls, making the event even more interactive. I was busy snapping pictures when I bumped into these lovely ladies and how can I miss the opportunity to take a photo with them. Well received hospitality from the Gundam Image Girls too when they invited me for refreshment manned for invited guests. Sori...... I was too engrossed in photography session and couldn't bother on snacking. The Gundam Image Girls had also drawn in crowd when they went on stage posing with Haro in their hands.

Before I end my posting on Gunpla Expo 2011 Singapore Tour, let us take a look at some of the master pieces done by renowned professional model kit masters such as Mr Kawaguchi-san and others. Last but not least, my heartfelt thanx to the organizer, Sheng Tai Toys Pte Ltd for the invitation, splendid event which I had enjoyed a lot. Thank you again and I will see you next year...

I had returned to the expo again yesterday with Guy 'A' and noticed that the organizer had made some rearrangement to the shelves, making the display look neater and some kits were also given more anime like posing. Guy 'A' was attracted to HG 1/144 Gundam Age (metallic version) and hence settled for this latest expo exclusive. I'm certain the anime he's currently watching made an influence.
