SWEET SCENTS TO SAVOR

This still life watercolor painting depicts an inviting sunny window after a rainfall. Feminine ribbons and lace tablecloth enhance the theme of preservation suggested by the dried flowers, pot pourri in mason canning jars and home-made scented oil. Lingering droplets of water on the window panes assemble and trickle down, gathering momentum as more droplets join the stream. Upon reflection, this is not at all a "still" life.

When composing an action painting or portrait, I usually work from a number of different photos, combining elements that I like from each to create the composition that I'm looking for - the action from one photo, the facial expression from another, the lighting effect from a third, etc. Using today's technology makes planning a layout of a composition fun. I try different arrangements and combinations until I reach a desired effect and I catch myself smiling.

My love for action and fascination with capturing a flash of movement in this motionless art form should be evident in my sports paintings. Only the experience itself can compare with the thrill I feel when I have captured an athlete in the excitement of the moment, a skier in anticipation of the next mogul, heli or gate, a figure skater in the midst of performing the best quad ever, a snow boarder out-maneuvering three formidable opponents in a snowboard cross race. Every athlete, professional or amateur, can identify with the adrenaline rush felt in that instant portrayed in my painting. This work for me is exhilarating, unrestricted, satisfying.

COMPOSING A SPORTS ACTION PAINTING

Step 1:

When composing a sports action painting, I usually work from a number of photos of the same action from different angles and under different lighting conditions. Very seldom, is just one photo perfect enough to be the sole model for the painting. I usually combine my favorite elements from different photos to create the effect that I'm looking for - the expression on the athlete's face from one photo, the muscle action from another, the lighting from a third. My planning stage often takes as long as completing the entire painting. Photoshop sometimes comes in very handy for this process where I can combine photographic elements easily to see if I like the effect. When I am satisfied with this preliminary layout, I go on to the next phase.

Before I begin to paint, I complete a detailed drawing of the subject on my canvas using my preliminary layout as the model as if the athlete were posing in my studio, frozen in time. Facial expressions, muscle action, pose must be right in order to make the action look believable. When painting in watercolor, this is particularly important to my style since I do not use white paint. True to traditional watercolor techniques, the whites in my compositions are created by the white paper background; so, in order to leave the paper white in the right locations, a detailed drawing on the paper canvas is essential.

I took many photos of this mare with her foal at the request of my client. Back at my studio, I chose the one I liked best to work from. I liked the position of the horses and painted them as they were in the photo but the background is from my imagination.

BEYOND THE SHADOW OF A DOUBT

On the surface, my still life paintings are of seemingly ordinary objects but they often represent deeper thoughts and events. In "Beyond The Shadow of a Doubt", the question of innocence vs. guilt is weighed. Three ravaged books, respectively titled, "Duty", "Justice", and "Truth" symbolically support the "scales of justice". In the shadows on the left is a sealed jug of 86% proof Irish Whiskey expounding the motto: "Give every man his due". This not only represents my personal opinion but brings to mind the old adage that truth lies in the bottle.

A fallen leaf which has slipped into the scene through an open window casts a shadow, the flicker of doubt on the scene. This visual metaphor is among many hidden in the painting. The title of the piece and the open window invite us to look beyond the obvious in search of the truth.
