How to Control Your NinjaTrader 8 Automated Setups From Your Phone with Telegram

Ten automated setups, several computers, one phone. When your systems run on a VPS instead of your own computer, the question is simple: how do you know what they are doing when you are away? In this short video we show how Markers Pro answers it through Telegram.

The setup: ten systems running on a VPS

Everything in the video runs live on our YouTube stream, every day: five setups on NQ and five on the S&P. They don’t run on my computer. They run on a QuantVPS server, so they keep trading whether my computer is on or not.

Global P&L from the chart menu

As shown in the previous video, you can right-click any Markers Pro menu on the chart and see the global P&L of every instance. That works when you are in front of the platform. Telegram gives you the same information from anywhere.

Every Markers, every computer, in Telegram

In Telegram you get an overview of all your Markers on all your computers: the local one and each server. Each computer shows up separately, so you can tell at a glance where each system is running.

Checking the P&L setup by setup

The global figure is the sum of every setup, and you can check each one individually. In the video, ATR Trend on the S&P shows the same result in Telegram and on the chart.

Disable All and Enable All from anywhere

If something is not working as expected, or you decide you are done for the day, you can switch everything off from anywhere: Disable All turns every system off at once, and Enable All turns them back on.

Turning one setup on or off

You can also open a single setup and turn it on or off. In the video, Reversal on the S&P is switched off from Telegram and the chart reflects it: the setup is no longer green.

Real time vs. the YouTube delay

The control is real time. The stream is not: YouTube adds a few seconds of delay, which is why the change appears on the stream a moment after it is made in Telegram.

Full control from all your computers

The idea is full control over all your Markers, individually or globally, on every computer: one server, another similar server, and the local computer, all from the same Telegram chat.

How to set daily loss and profit limits per setup, per account and across every automated setup in NinjaTrader 8 with Markers Pro 2026. With video.

Running one automated setup, a daily limit is simple: the setup stops when it reaches it. Running several, on different accounts or in different workspaces, raises a harder question. Each setup can be inside its own limit while the account as a whole is already past the line your prop firm drew.

Markers Pro 2026 handles limits on two levels: one for each setup, and one for everything together.

Level 1: a limit for each setup

Every Markers instance has its own daily profit and daily loss limit. By default, both are set to $500. When an instance reaches either one, it shows a message and stops trading for the day.

This works well because each instance is independent. One Markers can trade longs on one account with its own ATM, another can trade shorts on a different account, and each one respects its own limits.

The problem appears when the number of instances grows. Five setups, each with a $500 loss limit, can add up to a $2,500 loss on a day when all of them go wrong. No single setup broke its rule, but the account did.

Level 2: a global limit for everything

Right-click any Markers Pro menu and open the Global Panel.

Global On/Off. One switch turns every Markers off, or back on. With Global Off, nothing trades, whatever each instance has enabled.

Global daily loss and profit. You set a maximum daily loss and a maximum daily profit for the combined result of every Markers in NinjaTrader, adding up all instances and all accounts. When the total reaches either limit, trading stops for the day. To continue, you have to unblock it manually, and you can change the limits at that moment.

Limits per account. If one account needs a different limit, select it in the panel and give it its own. That’s useful when you run an evaluation and a funded account side by side, each with different rules.

The panel controls every Markers, including the ones in workspaces that aren’t open on screen. Nothing runs outside its reach.

Why two levels matter on a prop firm account

Prop firms set the daily loss limit for the account, not for each strategy. The individual limits keep each setup in check; the global limit makes sure the sum never crosses the firm’s rule. Set the global loss limit below the firm’s limit, with some margin, and the account stops itself before the firm stops it.

Control from your phone

The same controls are also available through Telegram: the status of each system, the result per account and per setup, and the switch to turn off one system or all of them. We’ll cover the Telegram setup in its own video.

TIS_PivotDensity for NinjaTrader 8: Find Where Pivots Really Cluster

Pivots tend to act as support and resistance, so many traders mark pivot confluence by hand and use those zones for the current session. The further back you look, though, the more pivots you find, and most of them don’t line up exactly: one may sit a few ticks from another. A line on every pivot quickly turns the chart into a wall of horizontal lines.

TIS_PivotDensity handles that work automatically.

How it works

It detects every pivot high and pivot low on the chart.
It builds a histogram of how many pivots sit at each price.
It smooths that histogram, so pivots that are close but not identical merge into one zone.
It draws a level only where the density passes your threshold.

The peaks in the histogram are the prices where pivots gathered most often in the past, which is why those zones tend to matter again.

Two settings do the work

Smoothing: how far apart two pivots can be and still count as the same zone. A setting of 1 draws a line on almost every pivot. Raising it groups nearby pivots into clean zones.
Threshold: how many levels you see. Set it high to get only the single strongest level, or lower it to see all of them.

Different markets, different settings

In the video, Pablo tests the indicator on several instruments:

NQ: levels hold similar between the 5- and 15-minute charts.
Euro (forex): fewer pivots per zone, so it needs less filtering to show more levels.
NQ, Euro and S&P side by side: all three produce comparable confluence zones.
Apple (stocks): needs more smoothing to get useful levels.
Crude oil: works well with less smoothing.
Crypto: after adjusting the settings, the levels line up very cleanly with price.

Markers 2026 October Release: Global Control, Risk Limits and Telegram | The Indicator Store

The October 2026 release of Markers adds the control layer that traders running several systems have been asking for: one switch for every instance, risk limits per account, and the same control from your phone through Telegram. Below is what's new, followed by a quick review of how Markers builds and automates signals in NinjaTrader 8 without code.

What's new in this release

Global On/Off

Right-click any Markers Pro menu and you can disable every instance at once. With Global Off, nothing trades, no matter whether an instance has longs, shorts or both enabled. One click turns everything back on. Each instance keeps its own settings; the global switch sits above all of them.

A control panel with risk limits

The new panel gathers everything in one window:

the global status, with the same On/Off switch
the settings of each instance: long/short enabled and the ATM in use
the state of every account
risk limits, both global (all accounts combined) and per account, with a maximum and a minimum you define and can remove at any time

Full control from Telegram

Everything in the panel is also available on Telegram. From your phone you can check the status of each system, see the net result per account and per setup, and switch off the whole platform or a single system depending on what it's doing.

The video shows this on a live server running several prop firm accounts: the total made by Markers, the result of each setup, and which charts have longs and shorts enabled, all in one place. These are the same setups we run live on YouTube every day.

Markers Pro menus that fit any chart

You can customize Markers Pro menus (font, background, opacity). They snap into place horizontally or vertically and stay attached when you move or resize the chart. On a small chart, each new instance resizes to fit the window instead of disappearing. If you prefer the classic layout, you can still stack them all at the top.

How Markers builds signals without code

Signals from a change in slope

Say you have an HMA with a period of 50 and you want to mark every bar where it turns. Markers Slope does exactly that. In Input Series you choose the line to read. It can be any plot from any indicator, including custom ones. Markers draws a signal each time that line's slope changes.

A minimum threshold filters out the small wiggles that technically turn the line but mean nothing. Set it to 1 on the HMA 50 and you're left with the turns that matter.

Crossovers between anything

Markers Copy assigns a name to any plot. Name one line "blue" and another "red", and any chart can refer to them by name. Markers Crossover then detects the cross between:

two lines (blue versus red, or red versus blue)
a line and price
price and a horizontal level
any two named plots, from a standard indicator or a custom one

Each result can carry its own name, so it can feed a histogram or another tool further down the chain.

From signal to automated order

Once a chart has signals, Markers can execute them. Each instance defines its own account, ATM strategy and direction. One can trade longs on one account, another shorts on a sim account, and a third both.

Markers Plus gives each instance a fixed menu and a panel with the daily result and the last trade. Markers Pro adds the adjustable interface and the global control described above.

The Real Breakout Setup: Opening-Range Box + Volume Breakout on NinjaTrader 8

Most breakout trades fail for the same reason: the signal fires while price is still inside the range. The Real Breakout Setup solves that with two filters. First, a box that marks the range of the first hour of the session. Second, a volume condition that confirms the move. Longs are only taken above the box, shorts only below it.

This guide explains the method step by step. Everything in the first part can be done with tools that already come with NinjaTrader 8.

Key takeaways

The opening-range box is built from the high and the low of the first hour around the day session open.
Volume is compared against its own moving average, not against a fixed number, so the signal adapts to each market and each day.

Step 1: Build the opening-range box

Define the first hour around the day session open and mark the highest high and the lowest low of that window. Those two prices are the top and the bottom of the box.

Manually, you only need a rectangle and two horizontal lines, all available in NinjaTrader 8. Draw the rectangle over the first hour and place a line at the high and another at the low. Those lines are the references for the rest of the day.

Step 2: Turn raw volume into a breakout signal

A breakout without volume is only a price move. To confirm it, compare the volume of each bar against its own moving average. When volume is clearly above that average, participation is real.

Using the moving average instead of a fixed threshold matters: normal volume is not the same on NQ as on ES, or on a quiet day as on a news day. The average adjusts to each case.

Step 3: Read the direction

Direction comes from structure. Higher highs and higher lows favor longs. Lower highs and lower lows favor shorts.

Step 4: Filter by the box

This is the rule that gives the setup its name:

Above the box: only longs.
Below the box: only shorts.
Inside the box: no trades. Every signal inside the range is discarded.

The same setup, done automatically

The second half of the webinar builds the same setup with two indicators and a template:

Breakout Boxes draws the opening-range box automatically.

Volume Flow generates the volume-breakout signal.

The template combines both, already configured for Eastern time.

Automating the entries

Automating the entries requires Markers Plus or Markers Pro. Markers is a separate product and is not included with the setup. The template comes with the automation already mapped to the filtered signals, so it starts working once Markers is installed and licensed.

How to Send a TradingView Alert to Your Broker: Webhook Setup for Futures

Your setup fires. You switch platforms to place the order, and by the time you're there the entry is gone. That gap is what this guide closes: how to take a signal on a TradingView chart, turn it into an alert that already carries the complete order, and get it to your broker — without writing a single line of code.

Everything below is the same process we ran live on NQ, and the full session is embedded at the end.

Why a TradingView strategy doesn't place orders

Load a strategy on a chart and you'll see entries, exits, and a performance report underneath. It looks like a trading system, and in a sense it is — but it is entirely historical. Those orders are drawn on the chart. They are not sent anywhere.

What sends something outside TradingView is an alert. An alert can deliver an email, a push notification on your phone, or a webhook.

What a webhook is, and why you need one

A webhook is a message TradingView sends to a web address when your alert fires. TradingView doesn't talk to brokers directly, so something has to sit in the middle: a webhook provider that receives that message, translates it into a real order, and routes it to your broker.

So the chain looks like this:

Your signal → TradingView alert → webhook → gateway → broker

Before you start

Three things need to be in place:

A paid TradingView plan. This is the one that surprises people. On a free account you can create alerts, but the webhook option under Notifications is not available.
An account with a webhook provider, connected to your broker.
A broker account — demo is fine, and demo is where you should start.

Step 1 — Connect your broker

Inside the webhook provider, log into your broker account. Once connected, everything else is managed from that panel: which account receives the orders, which instrument, and the size.

If you have sub-accounts, each one appears separately. Pick the one you want to trade before generating anything.

Step 2 — Generate the alert code

The provider generates two things you'll need: a webhook URL and a token. Save both.

At this stage you choose between two modes:

Indicator mode. Your indicator prints a signal, and you define the target and stop here.
Strategy mode. Your strategy already defines entry, target and stop, so you leave those fields empty and let the strategy decide everything.

Then select the account, confirm, and the provider produces the alert message — a long string of text. That string is what TradingView will send.

One security note: that string contains your token. Anyone with it can send orders to your account. Never share it in a screenshot or a video, and if it ever gets exposed, use the "refresh token" option to invalidate it immediately.

Step 3 — Create the alert in TradingView

On your chart, click the alert icon and set:

Condition: your strategy, or your indicator's signal.
Expiration: if you're trading a contract that rolls over, set it to expire in a month rather than leaving it open-ended. It forces you to refresh the alert with the current contract.
Alert name: this is what you'll see in your list of alerts, so name it for the setup, not "Alert 1".
Message: delete whatever is there and paste the alert code from the provider.

Step 4 — Paste the webhook under Notifications

The message says what to send. The Notifications tab says where. Paste the webhook URL there and enable it.

Each broker connection has its own webhook URL, so make sure you're pasting the one that matches the account you selected.

You can also enable a push notification on your phone, which is useful. The email option will simply deliver the raw code, so it adds little.

Symbol mapping and contract rollover

TradingView and your broker don't name instruments the same way. The provider handles this with a mapping table: you write NQ, and it resolves to the correct front-month contract on your broker.

That's also why the alert expiration matters. An alert left running for months will keep pointing at a contract nobody is trading.

Two levels of control

This is the part people ask about most, because handing order placement to an automated chain feels like losing control. You have two independent switches:

In TradingView: pause the alert itself, and nothing is sent.
In the provider: pause the account, and incoming webhooks are received but ignored.

Either one stops execution. Both are one click, and both are reversible.

The execution log

Every webhook that arrives is recorded — the ones that executed and the ones that were ignored because the account was paused. When something doesn't behave as expected, that log is the first place to look: it tells you whether the message arrived at all, which separates a TradingView problem from a broker problem.

What if your indicator has no signals?

Most indicators on TradingView draw lines. They don't print buy and sell signals, and without a signal there is nothing to automate. Here is how to build one from scratch.

Add an oscillator

Any oscillator works. In the session we used a CCI with a 3-bar smoothing, and kept only the smoothed line on the chart.

Read its pivots automatically

A divergence means price and the oscillator disagree: price keeps making lower lows while the oscillator prints a higher low. Spotting that by eye works, but you can't automate an eye.

TIS_Swing detects swing highs and lows, and — unlike standard pivot tools — keeps the last confirmed level alive as a continuous value on every bar. It also takes any plot on your chart as its source, so instead of pivots on price you can point it at the oscillator.

Turn the pivots into a divergence signal

TIS_Divergence takes the oscillator as its source, compares its pivots against price, and prints the entry signals. Two settings matter more than the rest: the minimum level for high pivots and the maximum for low pivots. Without them you get a signal on every pivot, including the ones on the wrong side of the zero line.

Turn the signal into an order

TIS_Automator is a strategy that takes the signal from any indicator on your chart — visible or not — and builds the complete order: entry, target in ticks, stop in ticks, size, and a session filter. You pick the buy and sell plots from a dropdown.

Because it runs as a strategy, the performance report under the chart recalculates every time you change a parameter. Widen the target and you'll see immediately what it does to the result; enable the session filter and you'll see the trade count drop and the profit factor move. That feedback loop is the point — it's how you find out which settings your instrument actually tolerates, before any money is involved.

Test on demo first

Before pointing any of this at a funded account, run the whole chain on a demo account and watch one order travel end to end: signal, alert, webhook, fill. It takes minutes, and it's the only way to know that every link works together rather than separately.

Comparing Contract Volume and Building Support/Resistance Zones During Rollover

We're in the middle of the transition from the September contract to December, and this week we started a series of weekly technical analysis live sessions to walk through how we handle these rollover days step by step.

Why rollover complicates automated trading

During the transition between contracts, volume is split between the old contract and the new one. When that split is close to 50/50 — as it was this morning before the open — no automated system has a reliable read on real liquidity, so we prefer to turn off automated systems until volume clearly shifts toward one of the two contracts.

NinjaTrader's default setting (for normal trading)

By default, NinjaTrader has Merge Back Adjusted enabled (Tools > Options > Market Data). With this setting, the platform automatically merges successive contracts into a single continuous series, adjusting historical prices so there are no visible gaps between one contract and the next. This is the right setting for day-to-day trading and for daily or weekly chart analysis — there's no need to touch it.

How to compare the old contract against the new one

To see specifically which contract is carrying more volume during the rollover, you need a different chart setup:

Create a chart with two data series: the current contract (for example, September) and the next one (December).
Apply the saved template for this analysis, "TIS Rollover" (Templates > Manage).
Turn off automatic adjustment in Tools > Options > Market Data, selecting "Do not merge" and "Do not adjust."
Right-click the chart > Reload All Historical Data.

This shows each contract's real, unadjusted volume, making it clear which contract is picking up liquidity in real time.

Understanding the price adjustment in a rollover

When NinjaTrader merges contracts, it shifts the historical prices of the previous contract to match the new contract's close at the rollover point (for example, a 282-point upward adjustment in the June rollover). That date and adjustment can be checked contract by contract in Tools > Instruments > [instrument] > Edit, which keeps a full rollover history. The rollover date can be changed manually, but we don't recommend it — the pivots would stop lining up with what the rest of the market sees.

What to do while volume is mixed: manual support and resistance

With automated systems paused, this is the time to map the zones where price is most likely to react:

Visible pivots. Mark the highs and lows any trader can identify at a glance, paying particular attention to zones where several nearby pivots stack up — those zones matter more than a single isolated line.

Fibonacci extensions. The 1:1 and 1.38 (138%) extensions are the ones we rely on most, rather than adding too many levels that end up cluttering the read.

Fibonacci retracements. The reference levels are 50%, 61.8%, and 78.6%, along with double bottoms that line up with those levels.

Confluence. A zone becomes relevant when several of these tools — a pivot, an extension, a retracement — fall in the same price range. Those are the zones we later use to filter signals from automated systems: a buy signal sitting right on resistance gets discarded or deprioritized, while a signal in the direction of the zone, with enough room to the next target, gets prioritized.

NinjaTrader 8 Basics: Workspaces, Charts, Orders and ATM Strategies

Why your NinjaTrader 8 workspace never saves, how to place orders from the chart, and how to set up ATM strategies with automatic stops and targets. No coding.

Installing NinjaTrader 8 is documented everywhere. What happens in the twenty minutes after that is not — and that is where most people get stuck.

This is the first entry in a new run of the Do It Yourself series covering platform fundamentals. We start with NinjaTrader 8, and Quantower and TradingView follow. Everything below is in the video, with chapter markers if you want to jump to one section.

1. The default workspace cannot be saved

Open the platform for the first time and you get a preset layout with a few charts and a SuperDOM. You rearrange it, add your indicators, set your timeframes. Then you close NinjaTrader, reopen it, and everything is back the way it was.

This is not a bug. The default workspaces that ship with the platform are protected — you cannot modify or delete them, and any change you make is discarded when you close the program.

So the first thing to do, before configuring anything, is create your own workspace. Go to the Workspaces menu and select New. You get an empty layout, and from there every change you make is yours to keep.

A workspace is a set of windows plus their positions, including which monitor each one sits on. When you save it, all of that is stored. Position your Control Center wherever suits you — it is where you see your account, open positions, running strategies, executions, orders, and the log with warnings and reports.

To keep a variation of an existing setup, use Save As with a different name rather than overwriting. Many traders keep one deliberately empty workspace to switch to when they need the desktop visible.

The part that catches people

You can have several workspaces loaded at once, but you only ever see one. In the Workspaces menu, the active one appears in green; others may be loaded and running behind it.

Loaded means running. The charts keep updating, the indicators keep calculating, and any strategy attached to them keeps placing orders. If you have ever wondered where an order came from, this is usually the answer: a chart on a workspace you forgot was open.

2. Creating your first chart

From the Control Center, click New and select Chart. Pick your instrument — with a futures data connection you will find the current contract, for example the September 2026 NASDAQ contract — then the bar type and interval.

Five-minute bars are a reasonable starting point. Set how much history to load, say the last fifteen days, and leave the rest at default until you know what you want to change. There are more exotic bar types available, UniRenko among them, but they need more configuration than a first chart deserves.

If your chart looks frozen, it is not broken

Open a chart on a weekend and the last bar sits there doing nothing. New users conclude the data feed has failed.

The cause is the session template. The default one excludes weekends and holidays, so outside market hours nothing moves. Right-click the chart, go to Data Series, and switch the session template to Default 24/7. Now the chart is live around the clock, which is what you want for testing.

While you are there, it is worth knowing about range bars. A ten-tick range bar closes when price has covered ten ticks, whatever that takes. Unlike time-based bars, a quiet market produces no new bars at all.

3. Placing orders from the chart

Chart Trader is the panel that lets you trade directly from the chart. You can enable it, disable it, resize it, or hide it while keeping it active. If Chart Trader is off, right-clicking gives you no order options at all.

With it on, where you put the mouse decides which orders you are offered:

Above the current price — Sell Limit or Buy Stop
Below the current price — Buy Limit or Sell Stop

That is not an arbitrary rule. A limit order sits where price has to come to you; a stop order sits where price has to run away from you. Above the market, selling is the limit and buying is the stop. Below, it reverses.

Orders go to whichever account is currently selected, and only the orders belonging to that account appear on the chart. If you run several accounts, live and simulated, check which one is active before you click.

Practice without risking anything

Disconnect your live connection and connect to a simulated account instead. The simulator lets you push price up and down manually, which is how you test trailing stops and order behaviour without waiting for the market to cooperate.

Once you are in a position, the P&L shown by Chart Trader defaults to currency. Right-click, open Properties, and you can switch the display unit to ticks, points, or price — or just click the P&L figure to cycle through them. Four ticks down and fifteen dollars down are the same information; which one you want to see depends on how you think about risk.

4. ATM strategies: stops and targets that place themselves

A naked position has no protection. ATM — Automated Trade Management — is how you attach a stop and a target that go in the moment you get filled.

There are no ATM strategies by default; you create each one. Select Custom and set the stop and target in ticks, twenty and twenty for a first example. You can express these in ticks, points, price or currency, whichever you prefer to think in.

Where it gets useful is multiple targets. Add a second position with the same stop and twice the target, and the ATM now handles two contracts: target one takes the first off, target two runs further. Save it as a template with a name you will recognise.

One difference from other platforms: you do not see a preview of the stop and target before entry. They appear once you get filled. From there you can drag any of them — in a real market you would put the stop a few ticks below the last swing low and target one below a nearby pivot.

When target one fills, the stop automatically resizes to cover the one remaining contract. That is the whole point of the setup.

Never move a stop to the wrong side of the market

Dragging a stop through the current price is the one action to avoid. Depending on your broker and connection it is either blocked outright or rejected — and a rejected stop leaves you holding a naked position without protection.

If you want out fast, use the Close button, or drag your target through the price so it fills immediately. Both are faster than fighting with a stop.

5. Indicators and order flow tools

Right-click the chart and select Indicators to see what ships with the platform, which is a great deal. The VWAP included with NinjaTrader 8 is more complete than most.

Beyond the standard indicator list, the drawing tools include order flow instruments worth knowing:

Volume profile can be drawn over any section of the chart you select, and moved or extended afterwards. At one tick per level it looks noisy; widen it to eight ticks per level and the picture smooths out, showing where volume actually traded.

Anchored VWAP works the same way. Instead of the session VWAP, you anchor it from a point you choose to the current price, and it updates in real time as you extend the area, standard deviation bands included.

Why a VPS Stopped Being a Luxury for Futures Traders

One question comes up almost every week in our live sessions: do I actually need a VPS to trade?

The honest answer is that it depends on how you trade. If you open your platform, watch the chart for half an hour and close it, your own computer is fine. But the moment your trading depends on something being awake while you are not watching it, an automated strategy, a trade copier, alerts that have to fire on time, a funded account with rules that do not forgive, your computer stops being a tool and becomes a single point of failure.

A VPS is simply a Windows machine that lives in a datacenter and runs around the clock. You connect to it by remote desktop from your PC, your laptop or your phone, leave the platform running, close the window, and everything keeps working without you.

Here is what that actually buys you.

Your strategy should not depend on the power grid in your house

This is the part most traders underestimate. A blackout. An internet outage. A Windows update that reboots the machine at three in the morning. An antivirus that decides to scan the whole drive right at the open.

In manual trading, any of those is an annoyance. In automated trading, it is an open position with nobody managing it. And the worst case is not missing an entry. It is being in the market with a stop that no longer exists, because the platform holding it went dark.

A professional datacenter solves this with redundant power, redundant connectivity and round-the-clock monitoring. It is the part of the service you pay for and hope never to notice.

Latency: physical distance is not a detail

Index futures trade on the CME, in Chicago. Every order you send from home travels there and back.

From a residential connection outside the United States, that round trip can take 100 to 200 milliseconds, and it varies with the time of day and the state of the network. A server sitting in Chicago with a direct fiber path to the exchange works in fractions of a millisecond.

How much does that change in practice? If you swing trade, very little. If you trade MNQ or MES intraday with tight entries, it changes a lot, and the difference shows up as slippage, which you pay every single day. One MNQ tick is fifty cents per contract. That sounds like nothing until you multiply it by a month of trades.

Consistency beats raw power

Your PC does a lot of things at once: a browser with twenty tabs, Discord, a spreadsheet, background updates. Your trading platform competes for CPU with all of it, and the moment the market speeds up, exactly when you least want trouble, is when the machine starts to lag.

A trading VPS does one job. The hardware is specified for it: AMD processors, DDR5 memory, NVMe storage, and a Windows install configured for trading platforms and nothing else.

Multiple accounts and order copying

If you are running several prop firm accounts at the same time, a VPS is no longer an upgrade. It is basic infrastructure. You need several platform instances running in parallel without choking, a trade copier that mirrors entries and exits without depending on your home connection, and the confidence that none of it will drop out in the middle of an evaluation.

The plan you choose matters here. How many charts and strategies you can run simultaneously depends directly on the server's CPU and RAM. The most common mistake is buying the smallest plan and then wondering why the platform feels slow.

You get to leave your desk

A less technical benefit, but a real one: you stop being tied to the chair. The station stays on in the datacenter, and you connect from wherever you are to check on it, close a position or change a parameter. If you travel, if you have a day job, if you simply want to shut the laptop, your trading does not stop with you.

What to check before you buy

Not every VPS is built for trading. Generic web hosting is cheaper and will disappoint you. What matters:

Datacenter location. For CME futures, Chicago. That is the whole answer.

A stated latency figure to the exchange, not "low latency" in the abstract.

RAM and cores matched to your charts. One strategy on one chart is one thing; five systems on tick data is another.

Administrator access to Windows, so you can install your own indicators and strategies without asking permission.

Automatic backups and an uptime SLA in writing.

Support that understands trading, not a ticket queue that answers in two days.

Monthly billing and cancellation without penalty. Do not sign up for a year to run a test.

As a rough sense of the market: an entry plan for a single chart runs around 30 to 40 dollars a month, something comfortable for two or three strategies sits between 60 and 80, and once you are running four or five systems at once you are looking at 100 to 130. Put next to what you already pay in commissions, or next to the cost of one trade closed badly because of a disconnection, the math is not difficult.

Before You Automate Anything on NinjaTrader 8, You Need a Strategy

Most traders arrive at automation from the wrong direction. They see a tool that places orders on its own and think the tool is the answer. Then they connect it to whatever indicator is on the chart that week, and they get the same results they were getting before, only faster.

Automation is an execution layer. It does exactly what you tell it to do, at the moment you told it to, without hesitating. That is enormously valuable — but only if what you told it to do was worth doing. A machine executing an undefined idea is not a system. It is a faster way of finding out that the idea was undefined.

So before you automate a trading strategy on NinjaTrader 8, the work is upstream. Here is what that work actually looks like.

An indicator is not a strategy

This is the distinction that costs people the most money, and it hides behind familiar words.

An indicator is a measurement. A moving average measures the average price over a window. An RSI measures the relationship between recent gains and losses. Neither one tells you to do anything. They describe a condition.

A strategy is a decision. It says: when this specific combination of conditions is true, I enter in this direction, with this size, and I exit when this happens or that happens. Every part of that sentence has to be filled in with something specific enough that two different people reading it would place the same trade.

Most traders who believe they have a strategy actually have an indicator plus a set of impressions. The indicator gives a signal, and then they decide. That decision is where the strategy actually lives, and it has never been written down — which means it changes depending on how the morning went.

You cannot automate an impression. You can only automate a rule.

Start by writing down what you already do

The most useful first exercise has nothing to do with software. Watch your own chart for a week and write down, in plain language, every trade you took and why.

Not "RSI was oversold." Something closer to: "price came back to the moving average after making a new high, the pullback held above the previous swing low, and I entered on the close of the bar that reclaimed the average."

Do that for twenty trades and something uncomfortable usually emerges. Some of the conditions you write down will contradict each other. Some trades won't have a reason you can articulate at all. A few will turn out to be the same setup you'd been describing to yourself in two different ways.

That mess is the real starting point. Cleaning it up is the actual work of building a strategy, and no tool does it for you.

Turn each condition into something measurable

Once you have the description, every clause has to become a number or a comparison.

"Price came back to the moving average" becomes: which moving average, what period, what does came back mean — touched it, closed within N ticks of it, wicked through it? "The pullback held" becomes: held for how many bars, measured against which level?

This is tedious and it is where most people stop. It is also the step that separates a strategy from a feeling, because at the end of it you have conditions that can be evaluated identically on Monday and on Friday.

Some conditions will resist definition. When that happens, one of two things is true: either you haven't found the right measurement yet, or the condition is genuinely discretionary and belongs outside the automated part of your system. Both are acceptable answers. Pretending a discretionary condition is mechanical is not.

Define the exit before the entry

Traders spend most of their attention on entries and most of their money on exits.

An exit definition needs three things specified in advance: where you are wrong, where you take profit, and what happens if neither one is reached before the session ends. All three are numbers. If the answer to any of them is "it depends on how it looks," you have found the part of your system that is still undefined.

On NinjaTrader 8, this is what an ATM strategy is for. Your targets, your stops, your trailing behaviour and your break-even logic get defined once, in Chart Trader, as a named configuration. It forces the specificity, and it means the exit plan exists before the trade does rather than being invented while the position is open.

Watch it draw on the chart before you let it trade

Here is the step that gets skipped most often, and it is the one that saves accounts.

Once your conditions are defined, plot them. Have the system mark on the chart, historically and in real time, every moment where the full set of conditions was true. Do not connect it to an order. Just look at it.

You will find things. Conditions that fire twelve times a day when you expected three. Signals that appear on the wrong side of a trend you thought you had filtered. Entries that cluster in the first ten minutes of the session and nowhere else. Every one of those is a discovery you would otherwise have made with real money.

This is also the point where you learn whether your idea has enough occurrences to matter. A setup that appears twice a month is not necessarily wrong, but it demands a completely different approach to risk and expectations than one that appears twice a day.

Then add the constraints

Only after the logic draws correctly does it make sense to think about the boundaries around it.

A daily loss limit, expressed in currency, that stops trading when it is reached. A daily profit target that does the same. Trading windows, so the system does not operate in the hours where your setup does not work. A cap on consecutive trades in the same direction. One trade per bar.

These are worth defining even if nobody is requiring them of you. They protect a strategy from the conditions under which you would otherwise abandon it — and if you happen to trade an account with external risk parameters, having your own limits already written and enforced means you are never discovering theirs the hard way.

Decide how much of the decision you actually want to hand over

Full automation is not the only setting, and it is often not the right first one.

There is a middle mode worth understanding: you enable a direction, long or short, and then the system waits. When your conditions become true, the order goes out at that exact bar, and the mode disarms itself. You keep the judgement about whether the session deserves a trade at all. You hand over only the reaction time and the precision.

For a strategy you have just finished defining, this is usually the sensible arrangement. It lets you keep watching the logic behave in live conditions while the mechanical part is already mechanical. Moving to full automation becomes a decision you make later, with evidence, rather than a leap you take on day one.

One practical note: if you trade an account that comes with its own rulebook, check what it says about automated order placement before running anything unattended. Terms differ and they are updated periodically, so the only reliable source is your own current agreement.

What automation is actually for

It closes the gap between the rule you wrote down and the trade that reached the market.

That gap is real and it is expensive. Three valid signals in a session, and you cannot watch a screen for six hours, so you miss the second one. The third arrives while you are still calculating, and you take it a bar late with a wider stop in a size you did not plan. Nothing in that sequence was a strategy failure. Every deviation was human, and each one felt reasonable at the time.

Closing that gap is worth a great deal. But notice what it requires: a rule that was written down in the first place. Automation is the last step in the process, not the first. Everything valuable happens before it.

The order matters. Define the idea. Make it measurable. Specify the exit. Watch it draw. Add the constraints. Then, and only then, let it place the order.

Common questions

Do I need to know how to code to automate a trading strategy on NinjaTrader 8?
No. NinjaScript is C#, but you do not have to write it. If a condition is drawn on your chart, it can be captured as a variable and combined with other conditions using logical operators, without touching source code.

Can I automate an indicator I did not write myself?
Yes, as long as it plots on the chart. What matters is the plot, not the source. A third party indicator whose values are visible can be read the same way as one of your own.

What is an ATM strategy in NinjaTrader 8?
A named configuration in Chart Trader that holds your targets, stops, trailing behaviour and break-even logic. You define it once and reuse it. Automation routes the order into it rather than replacing it.

Should I start with full automation or semi-automation?

How to Automate a TradingView Strategy Without Writing Pine Script

There is a particular kind of frustration that comes from having an indicator that works and no way to let it trade.

You have watched it for weeks. You know how it behaves in chop, you know when to stand aside, you trust the signal. What you cannot do is be at the screen for every one of them — and the moment you try to hand that job to TradingView, you find out that the wall isn't where you expected it. It isn't the alert, and it isn't the connection to your broker. It's that the indicator you actually trade is closed source. You cannot open it, cannot read it, and cannot convert it into anything that places an order.

Every tutorial you find assumes the opposite. This article explains why that gap exists, what actually closes it, and the one piece of the architecture most tutorials leave out — the piece that matters most once real money is involved.

Why an indicator cannot place an order

On TradingView, an indicator and a strategy are two different kinds of object, and the difference is the whole problem.

An indicator draws. It answers exactly one question: now. Long, or short. That's the entirety of what it knows and the entirety of what it can tell you. The alert it fires is a notification — it carries no order, no size, no exit.

An order needs considerably more. How many contracts, on which symbol, at what order type, with the stop where, the target where, into which account, and what to do if a position is already open. Seven answers the indicator does not have, and cannot have, because none of that is its job.

That gap has a name on TradingView: the strategy layer. A strategy places orders, holds a target and a stop, respects a session window, and can be run through the Strategy Tester. Closing the gap means turning your indicator into one — which normally means rewriting it as a strategy() script in Pine.

The advice that assumes you own the source code

Search for how to do this and you will find the same instruction everywhere: take your indicator, add strategy.entry and strategy.exit, and you're done.

That instruction works. It works if you can see the code.

The indicators people actually pay for — ours included — are published as closed, invite-only scripts. You can run them on your chart. You cannot read a line of them. So the standard advice quietly assumes an open-source indicator, and for a large share of the tools traders are genuinely running, it describes a door that isn't there.

Which leaves three options, and only one of them survives contact with a protected script.

The route that doesn't need the code

Pine Script has a feature that makes the third option possible, and it is easy to miss: a strategy can take another script's plotted output as an input.

The mechanism is worth stating precisely, because it is often described loosely. The strategy does not read the indicator's code, and it does not interpret the arrows on your chart visually. It takes the series the indicator publishes as output — the same values it is already drawing — and uses that as its trigger. The indicator stays untouched, unopened, and exactly as its author wrote it.

That is what TIS Automator is: a Pine Script v5 strategy built around reading another script's plot. It takes the signal and builds a complete order around it — entry, target, stop, session, size — then fires a standard TradingView strategy alert that any execution gateway can consume.

Indicator → TIS Automator → Strategy alert → Gateway → Broker

Everything up to the alert happens inside TradingView. Everything after it belongs to your gateway and your broker. The strategy forms the order; it never touches your account. That boundary matters, and there is a section on it below.

One condition governs whether any of this applies to your indicator: it has to expose its signal as a plot you can select. Most do. Some don't, and there is no way to tell from the outside — not from the description, not from the screenshots, not from asking. This is why a free trial exists rather than a compatibility list. You load your own indicator, open the dropdown, and either your signal is in there or it isn't. Two minutes, on your own chart, with your own tools. Don't take anyone's word for it, including ours.

What the setup actually involves

Once the signal source is connected, the work is configuration rather than construction. In order:

Your indicator goes on the chart as it always has. Nothing is required of it except that it plots something.
The strategy goes on the same chart and you point it at your indicator's output from a dropdown. TradingView populates that list with every plot available. Choosing the right one is the entire integration.
You choose how the signal is read. Some indicators plot a single series that flips sign with direction — positive long, negative short, zero flat. Oscillators like MACD and CCI swing through zero and express the signal as a crossing between two series instead. Both shapes are handled, and which one applies is visible on the chart immediately: the entries should land exactly where you already expect them.
You set your target and stop in ticks, along with position size and the session window you want to trade.
You create one alert on the strategy, with the condition on order fills and your gateway's payload in the message body.

Two of those deserve more than a line, because they are where automated setups quietly go wrong months later.

Ticks, not points

Twenty points on NQ and twenty points on MNQ are the same distance in price and a very different amount of money. If your exits are written in points, every symbol change means recalculating your risk from scratch, and the day you forget is the day it costs you.

In ticks, the same numbers behave identically on the full contract and on the micro. You size the risk once and move between instruments without touching the settings. It sounds like a detail. It is the difference between a configuration you can trust and one you have to re-verify every time you switch.

Sessions that survive the clock change

The session window is TradingView's native session input, anchored to exchange time rather than to a fixed hour offset. Daylight saving does not silently shift your trading window twice a year.

Anyone who has built a time filter with a hardcoded offset knows why this is worth mentioning. The filter works perfectly for four months and then, one Monday in spring, starts trading an hour off — and nothing in the chart tells you.

The alert, and where it usually fails

The last step is one alert, created on the strategy, with the condition set to order fills and your gateway's payload template pasted into the message body using TradingView's strategy placeholders. Each gateway publishes its own format — PickMyTrade, CrossTrade, TradersPost and PineConnector all document theirs.

That message is where most attempts at automation fail, and they fail silently: the alert fires, nothing arrives, and no error appears anywhere. We covered why in a separate article, because the reasons are specific and worth reading before you go live.

Where your stop and target actually live

This is the part most tutorials skip, and misunderstanding it is how people get hurt. It is not specific to any one tool — it is how TradingView automation works, whatever sits in the middle.

Your target and your stop do not exist at your broker.

When the strategy sets a take profit and a stop loss, those levels live inside TradingView's strategy engine. TradingView watches its own price feed. When the feed touches one of those levels, the engine fills the order — and that fill event is what fires the alert your broker receives.

So what travels down the chain is never "place a stop at X." It is "exit now, at market." Your broker is a mirror: it replicates fills, it does not hold protective orders.

Three consequences you should understand before funding an account:

Match your exit order type to your gateway's payload. If the payload sends a limit price on the exit, that order can sit unfilled while your position stays open. Verify it in simulation before it matters.
With nothing resting at the broker, a TradingView outage leaves the position unattended. There is no second system watching the level. This is the single most important thing to understand about the architecture.
The gateway is where you fix that. Some gateways accept take profit and stop loss values in the order payload itself and pass them through to the broker as attached orders — giving you protection that survives an outage on TradingView's side. PickMyTrade documents this for both of its broker paths, Tradovate and Rithmic, which is more than most gateways publish. Check your own gateway's payload specification before assuming either way.

What automation does not do

Worth being explicit, because this category attracts inflated claims.

It does not generate signals — your indicator does that, and this builds orders from what your indicator already produces. It does not improve a losing strategy; automating rules with no edge produces losses faster and more consistently than trading them by hand. And it does not remove risk. What it removes is hesitation, missed entries, and unplaced stops. Those are execution errors, not market risk, and they are the ones worth eliminating first.

The structural benefit is easier to undersell than to overstate: an indicator cannot be run through TradingView's Strategy Tester at all. Once your signal drives a strategy, the platform's own testing and reporting apply to it — equity curve, trade list, drawdown, on something that was never written to be testable. To be precise about what is doing the work there, the Strategy Tester is TradingView's feature, not ours. What changes is that your indicator becomes eligible for it.

Before any live capital is involved, run the setup in simulation and confirm at least ten orders arrive intact: right contract, right size, stop and target attached.

Simulated trading is based on hypothetical results and does not reflect actual trading. Emotional and psychological factors of real-money risk are not replicated. Use simulation to verify your setup, not as an indicator of live performance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I automate a TradingView strategy without knowing how to code?

Yes. A strategy script takes your indicator's plotted output as its trigger, and the order parameters are set in a settings panel. No Pine Script is written.

Can I automate an indicator I bought if it's closed source?

Will automating my strategy make it profitable?

No. It executes your rules consistently. Whether those rules have an edge is a separate question, and the only honest answer is that it depends on the rules.

Volume is the fuel of financial markets. However, many traders struggle to correctly interpret whether a volume spike represents genuine buying or selling intent. In this tutorial, we dive deep into improving technical analysis on NinjaTrader 8, moving from basic indicators to advanced order flow and support & resistance tools.

The Problem with Classic Volume Indicators

Most platforms, including NinjaTrader, offer the standard volume indicator or the "Volume Up/Down" version. While useful, they have a critical limitation: they paint the volume bar based solely on the candle's close relative to its open.

For instance, a candle might close slightly below its open (painting the volume red), but the price action during that bar could have been overwhelmingly bullish, leaving a long bottom wick. The classic indicator suggests selling pressure, when in reality, the market might be absorbing sales to push higher.

A More Precise Reading: Volume Flow

To fix this, we use a custom indicator (TIS Volume Flow) that analyzes the candle's close relative to the entire range of the bar (High minus Low), not just the open. This reveals the true market pressure.

To detect when "Smart Money" enters the game, we apply a Volume Moving Average (Volume MA).

The Strategy: We look for bars where the volume exceeds this average multiplied by a specific factor.
The Goal: To filter out noise and highlight only significant volume spikes that suggest a potential breakout or market reversal.

Context is Key: Support and Resistance

A volume spike alone is not an entry signal. We need context. This is where the Support and Resistance (TIS S&R) indicator comes in, based on Swing logic.

Unlike the standard Swing indicator that leaves old dots all over the chart, this custom indicator:

Draws Zones: Groups nearby pivots to create clearer support/resistance areas.
Cleans the Chart: Automatically removes levels that have been broken or invalidated, keeping your workspace uncluttered.

How to Trade the Setup

The secret lies in combining the volume signal with price location:

Breakouts: If we get a high bullish volume signal and price breaks through a resistance zone, we have confirmation of strength.
Bounces: If price tests a previous support (without breaking it) and a volume signal appears, it presents a low-risk entry opportunity.
Filtering: If the volume indicator gives a buy signal, but we are sitting right below strong resistance, it is better to wait. The indicator helps us avoid trading directly into "walls" of orders.
