Why I want to go to the 2:1 Conference

Recently I found out about a blogging conference called 2:1. It's being held in Washington D.C. and is for homeschoolers with a heart for God. I would really like to go because there are going to be so many wonderful speakers there. Some of whom are bloggers I already converse with online and would love to meet in person. Have you heard of it? I'd love to know if any of you are going?

One of the unique things about this conference is that it's about putting God and family first. I hope to be encouraged in my homeschooling journey and learn how to be a better blogger as well. Plus, my oldest is quite excited because it's in D.C. I was hoping if I won my ticket ($199) that maybe I could swing the rest and take the family for a little field trip.

Just in case you're wondering (I know I was) what 2:1 means, it's focusing on the verse in the Bible in Titus.

Titus 2:1 - You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.

This past week I was down because it's been been raining so much lately and my husband hasn't been able to work. He works construction, so if the weather is bad he doesn't get to work or get paid. But then I thought about this song and how someone else might be praying for the rain. Here's a video and the words are listed below.

Book Review: Stumbling Into Grace

I recently had the chance to read Stumbling Into Grace: Confessions of a Sometimes Spiritually Clumsy Woman.
It's written by Lisa Harper and is kind of like a diary and devotional combined into one. She draws you in and talks to you like you're a close friend. This book is broken down into three parts called Real Life, Real Gifts, and Real Growth. The chapters are short, but not as short as a you would expect a daily devotional to be.

Stumbling Into Grace is really easy to read and can be quite funny and at times a little sad. Ms. Harper uses stories from her life and incorporates Bible scripture into each part. I like the prayers at the end of each chapter and the questions you can answer or just journal your own thoughts.

It helps to know that other Christian women have struggles too and to know that their lives aren't perfect. Because, I don't know about you, but sometimes I just feel like I don't have a clue and that I'm all alone! Lisa Harper also offers a fresh perspective on scripture I've read over and over before. I think this would be a good book for a women's study since it's short and already has questions for everyone to answer.

I give Stumbling Into Grace 4 out of 5 stars.

Wendy's Cheesy Crockpot Dip

On New Year's Eve we went to my Sister-in-law's house and she had this awesome dip. She has it often, but I finally asked her for the recipe. I wanted to share it with y'all! It is sooo yummy!

Wendy's Cheesy Crockpot Dip
Ingredients

1- 2 lb block of Velveeta Cheese
1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup
1 can Rotel Mild
1 lb. hamburger meat
1 lb mild sausage

Brown hamburger meat and sausage in pan, drain grease and put meat in crock pot.
Cut Velveeta cheese into cubes and put in crockpot.
Stir in can of Rotel and can of Cream of Mushroom Soup.
Turn on high until everything melts together, stirring occasionally.
Turn on keep warm and enjoy!

This is great with Tortilla chips. For this recipe it takes around 3 bags of chips. As you can see from the picture it makes quite a lot. We enjoyed it for several days!

We heard the music to this at the end of church last Sunday. My friend, Barb, was wondering why they were playing Beethoven's Symphony. And I was confused because I knew it was a hymn. But apparently we were both right. It was Beethoven's 9th Symphony and later, Henry van Dyke wrote words to go along with it.

For the last month or so, I have been feeding my chihuahua, Sugar, Hill's® Science Diet® Ideal Balance™ dog food. Sugar can be a very picky eater. I have noticed in the past that she likes dog food that has chicken as a main ingredient. So, I was very happy to see that the first ingredient was chicken. Also inside are fruits and vegetables, plus it has no corn or artificial colors.

Holiday Fun

Hunter's present on Christmas Eve

I hope y'all had a good Christmas! We did! On Christmas Eve we went to one of my cousin's house and ate. Afterwards we did a "Chinese Christmas", where you draw numbers, then the first person gets to pick first, and so on. But, the catch is, the next person, or any person after you, can choose to steal your gift instead of opening a new one. My hubby tried to hide his gift so no one would steal it! He ended up getting to keep it, it was a heavy duty flashlight, that bends. I also ended up with a three set of flashlights. Mitchell decided to steal a present, so he got a red and black checkered blanket.

On Christmas Day we got up and went to church and in the afternoon we went to my mother-in-law's house. The kids had a great time with their cousins. Then we went to see their horses. My husband loves horses! He had them growing up and misses them so. Turns out, Hunter loves horses too! He kept hugging them, it was so cute!

Hunter got a really cool set of John Deere tractors that he likes, a fire engine, and a racetrack.

My husband and I decided to get ourselves the gift of a new fuel pump. Our car had been broken for several months. So, as a family, we couldn't go anywhere, because our other vehicle is a truck with only three seats. It's nice being able to go places with both the kids again!

I love to go places, from Disney World to the beaches or the mountains. Unfortunately that can get pretty expensive! I just found the secret to make taking a family vacation more affordable. Here's an example of the great prices found on RedWeek: My favorite place in the world, Disney World, has a studio room available at the Boardwalk Villas for $130 a night! And this is during Christmas! The regular rate per night for this room is $370. That is such an amazing deal! Or if you'd prefer to stay offsite, you could stay at Cypress Pointe Resort in a one bedroom unit for only $64 a night.

Gorgeous Beaches

Maybe you would prefer a 2 bedroom unit on the beach. There is one at The Resort on Cocoa Beach in Florida next summer for $128 a night. The regular price for this room is $208 a night and it sleeps 6 people! Perhaps you've been wanting to go to Las Vegas, there is a 1 bedroom unit at a 5 star resort for only $80 per night.

Just think of all the space you'd have versus a regular hotel room. Hotels usually have one or two beds in the same room and a bathroom. Timeshare rentals often have fully stocked kitchens, separate bedrooms, a living room, and some even have washers and dryers. These amenities are great if you have children because you and the kids don't have to share a bedroom, plus you can cook your own meals to save even more money.

Fever Blister Prevention

I used to get fever blisters (cold sores) a lot! I probably had one at least every six weeks or so. They are so aggravating. First you feel the tingle and then the blisters pop up on your lips. When they finally get here it still takes about 2 weeks or so for them to heal up.

I asked my doctor if there was something I could take to help keep from getting them, but she said there wasn't. So, I did some research online and found some things people have taken to either keep from getting fever blisters, or to help heal them faster. There are several medicines that are supposed to help lessen the severity of the occurrences. But, they are only for after you get the cold sores, not before.

I tried a lot of the things I saw on websites and what finally ended up working for me was Lysine. Lysine is sold in the vitamin section of stores. The bottle in the picture above was bought at Dollar General for just a few dollars and will last me 2 months. I have been taking one 500 mg. pill a day for about 9 months or so. Since then the only time I have had a fever blister is when I ran out of pills and skipped a little over a week of taking them.

Now, I'm not promising this will work for everyone, but for me it's been a great preventative!

Update on Barb's Home

It's been forever since I gave y'all an update on Barb. You may remember she got a job in July. Recently they made her permanent part time which means she will get benefits now. So awesome!

I also posted that Barb received a used mobile home in the spring. Well, it turned out it needed more work than we first anticipated. A lot of the floors needed to be either partially or completely re-done.

It also needed painting, a new water heater, new flooring, and new porches. And the plumbing had to be re-done with new toilets, sinks, etc, etc. As you can see, the work kept adding up!

The most helpful men ever!

Luckily, we have had a lot of help from our church family. Which included some cousins of mine, our preacher and a few other men of the church. They were only able to work on it every so often whenever money was available. Our "men" included a plumber/electrician, a natural gas installer, an equipment operator, and a jack of all trades.

We They also put in a septic tank and water lines to the home. I mostly supervised, lol! Actually Hunter did way more work than me. He pulled up flooring, and filled in holes.

We were hoping Barb would be able to move in by Christmas, but unfortunately she still needs new flooring for 3 more rooms, some furniture, and we're hoping the heating system will still work that came with it.

I think everything has been done to get it inspected now and as soon as it passes they will turn the power on. That will make it so much easier to finish the little inside things that are hard to work on now that it gets dark so early.

Our Visit to Camden

Me on the steps of one of the historic homes

Last month we went on a field trip to Camden, SC. It was the site of several key battles of the Revolutionary War. Since we homeschool, we were able to go right around the time Mitchell was studying that in US History.

I am so lucky that Mitchell is like me in that he loves history. He really enjoyed walking around and looking at the various sites and wondering how it felt way back then for all the soldiers who were there.

We were able to tour several homes that date back to that period in history. Inside were artifacts that had been unearthed in Camden. We saw guns, tools, cannons, and lots of other things.

We also did a driving tour of the battles and saw graves and homes from that time. I really loved seeing all those old homes. The neighborhoods were so cozy and you could really picture how living back then would have been like.

I can't wait until it's time to eat turkey today! It will be weird since we're usually at Cora's house, but since she passed away this year, they aren't having a dinner. I'll be making dinner for our family and I hope it will be great! I wanted to post a few things I am thankful for today:

Jesus dying for me!
My husband for loving me and working hard so I can be a stay at home mom!
My aggravating, handsome, and sweet sons, who I love more than anything!
My family for putting up with me!
My friends for always being there for me!
Having a home to live in and share with friends!
Our wonderful church family!
My beautiful chickens who I love just watching peck around the yard!
Having at least one car that runs!
My laptop! (Just keeping it real folks)

Soft Kitty Plushie and T-Shirt

How cute is this kitty? Stylin Online just released the "Soft Kitty" singing plush toy. It's a 10 inch long grey and pink plushie. When you push it's paw, it sings the popular tune from the CBS hit TV show Big Bang Theory. The song Sheldon taught to Penny when he was sick. It goes like this: "Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur. Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr, purr, purr".

Jason's friends remember him

3 years. It can't be, can it? Seems like just yesterday when I got that awful phone call in the middle of the night. It was 3 years ago yesterday that my nephew Jason died. He would be 18 now, should be 18!

In case you're new here, I'll tell you a little about him. Jason was a smart kid, popular, handsome. Unfortunately he had gotten into huffing. Huffing is when you inhale vapors to get high. It probably seems less dangerous to kids since they are inhaling everyday items like aerosol dusting cans of air, nail polish remover, and gasoline. Of course there are many more things that you can huff, those are just a few.

The night Jason died he was huffing gas. I know he thought everything would be fine, but it wasn't. Huffing gasoline killed him. I think it almost killed his mother too. We all miss Jason, some days more than others. I try to write about Jason every year. I hope it helps others to know how dangerous huffing can be.
