Off-duty sheriff’s deputy and brother shot at in Altadena

2012-12-22T11:38:00.000-08:00

ALTADENA — An off-duty sheriff’s deputy and his brother escaped injury early Saturday after they were attacked in a car-to-car shooting, officials said.
The shooting took place about 3:40 a.m. as the deputy was driving his personal vehicle in the area of Lincoln Avenue and Harriet Street, with his brother riding in the front passenger seat, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Sgt. Cynthia Gonzalez said.
“A dark-colored Lexus sedan pulled alongside the driver’s side of the deputy’s vehicle and a passenger from the suspect vehicle fired three rounds from a handgun at the deputy’s vehicle before speeding away,” Gonzalez said.
One bullet struck the deputy’s car, she said, however neither he nor his brother were hurt.
Fellow deputies searched the area but did not find the attackers.
A motive in the shooting was unclear, Gonzalez said, and no further details were available.
Anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s Altadena Station at 626-798-1131. Tips can also be submitted anonymously by contacting L.A. Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.

NEW FAIRFIELD ——

The 15-year-old boy shot and killed early Thursday by his father was armed with a knife, sources said Friday.

Tyler Giuliano, dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask, may have been trying to break into his aunt's house at 7 Meetinghouse Hill Circle about 1 a.m. Thursday when his aunt called her brother who lives next door. Her brother, identified as Jeffrey Giuliano, armed himself with a handgun and went to investigate.

When he got outside, police said, he found a man dressed in black with a black ski mask covering his face in front of his sister's house. The man was armed with a knife.

A confrontation occurred, state police said. The man dressed in black approached Jeffrey Giuliano in a "threatening manner" and Jeffrey Giuliano feared he was about to be assaulted with the knife, police said. Jeffrey Giuliano then opened fire and struck the assailant in the head.

When state police from the Southbury barracks arrived moments later, they found Jeffrey Giuliano sitting on the grass. He was dressed in a t-shirt and shorts. His son lay dead in the driveway, the knife still in his hand. The medical examiner on Friday determined the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds.

State police Lt. J. Paul Vance Friday declined to release additional details about the incident. He did say detectives are working to figure what happened during the incident from start to finish. He estimated the investigation would take weeks.

New Fairfield First Selectman John Hodge and other sources said Tyler was the son of Jeffrey Giuliano, 44, a local elementary school teacher.

Friends and neighbors said Tyler was a student at New Fairfield High School.

According to public records, Jeffrey Giuliano's sister, Alexis Scocozza, lives at 7 Meetinghouse Hill Circle.

Grant Schoepp, 17, of Middleton Drive, lives one block over from Meetinghouse Hill Circle. He said his parents heard the gunshots, and that he'd heard there was a break-in nearby that had people spooked.

His father, Bill Schoepp, said he is close to the Giulianos, and was too upset to talk. "It's very close to home," he said. "I have nothing to say."

Joe Janse, who said Jeffrey Giuliano was his fifth-grade teacher at Meetinghouse Hill School in 2003 and 2004, said he was shocked.

"I can't believe something like this would happen in such a small town, to such a great family," he said.

A group of New Fairfield High School students talked about Tyler Giuliano and his father as they stood in a driveway on Middleton Drive Thursday night. They declined to give their names.

One said Tyler played trumpet in the high school marching band. He said Tyler and his father were close.

School Superintendent Alicia Roy sent a letter to parents and staff Thursday.

"Our district has experienced a tragedy that has affected us deeply. … This tragedy was not discussed with the students as the facts were not clear. Students and staff will react in different ways."

"We will try to maintain our typical routine and encourage you to do the same," the letter read. An open house at the high school scheduled for Thursday evening was cancelled .

"Clearly, the town is devastated by this and our heart aches for the family," Hodge said.

State police Western District Major Crime Squad detectives are investigating.

REMEMBER THAT MAN FOUND BURNING IN ALTADENA 4/26/12?, LINKS TO INSURANCE SCAMS POSSIBLE!

The man whose burning body was found on an Altadena sidewalk April 15 has been identified as 70-year-old Emmitt Lee Zinn, a coroner's official said Wednesday.
Zinn had no listed address and was likely homeless, Los Angeles County coroner's Lt. Fred Corral said.

He also may have set fires in connection with insurance scams, according to an anonymous source who contacted the Pasadena Star-News two days after Zinn's body was found. The identification corroborates the source's information.
"That is why his hands were tied, so he couldn't put the flames out," the source said.

Zinn's body was found by a passer-by about 6 a.m. that Sunday, and witnesses reported seeing rope tied around his hands and feet.
A coroner's report based on an April 18 autopsy confirmed Zinn's feet were bound, and a ligature was found on one wrist.

Investigators still don't know Zinn's cause of death or whether he was alive when he was set on fire, Corral said. More information is expected in 8 to 10 weeks when the results of additional tests are completed.

Homicide investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department have released little information since the body was found, and a detective didn't return calls Wednesday.
The slaying wasn't gang- related, the source added.

Zinn had been arrested on March 20 by the Los Angeles Police Department on a downtown felony, according to the Sheriff's Department's

inmate website, which lists his first name as "Emmett." Zinn was released March 28.
Zinn's last known address was in Pasadena, at the home of his now-deceased mother, Cora Beasley.

They previously lived in Riverside, and Zinn had traveled throughout the country, according to the source.

The Riverside homeowner who bought Beasley's house said Zinn still receives mail there, mostly from lawyers, and sheriff's deputies had been there last week seeking information about Zinn.

California Students Who Skip School Are Now Tracked by GPS

2011-02-25T16:41:00.000-08:00

The Anaheim Union High School district is the first to use this method of keeping kids in school.

Seventh and eighth graders with four or more unexcused absences are given a GPS device about the size of an average cellphone. The student is then required to check in at random points in time through out the day and even get a reminder in the morning that they need to get up and go to school. Students who still are causing trouble get an adult coach/buddy who they are required to call three times a week to update them on their status.
