Puka shells were all the rage in the 70s and 80s but now it's so hard to find puka shells that to get a genuine puka shell necklace or bracelet can be pretty costly. I'm not talking about the kind of puka shell necklace that's from the Philippines and really cheap I'm talking about real genuine puka shells, the kind that is actually found rolling in the surf.

The word puka means hole in Hawaiian. So with puka shell enthusiasts if you find the top of a cone shell and the puka hasn't formed, then you take it home and drill a hole in it, it is not considered to be a genuine "puka" shell. Wikipedia has a good write up on puka shells, the best one I've seen so far. I feel fortunate to have amassed quite a collection of puka shells, all collected here on Maui by me, my children, and grandson :) We will not sell whole puka shell necklaces, those are reserved for private use. My son has one, my grandson has one, my son in law has one, and both of my daughters have one. The leftovers we use for jewelry. Here's a couple of jewelry items we made with puka shells ~
In fact, he's the reason we started collecting sea glass and shells. While he bodyboards my daughters and I and sometimes even my little grandson, collect sea glass and shells.

On this particular day though I spent the day taking video footage and pictures of him bodyboarding and it really helped that there were no sea glass and shells to distract me! On this day I took him to The Foam Co. on Maui, Maui's only exclusive bodyboard shop, to buy a pair of bodyboard fins and fin leashes. He walked out of the store beaming with joy. And what a difference it was! He was catching waves left and right!!! I was soooo happy for him because he'd been without fins for so long. Everyone keeps stealing his fins!!!!! At least 3 pairs so far!!!!!! So he finally got his fins and I'm so looking forward to seeing him bodyboard again today with his brand new bodyboard fins :)

It was one of our many random beach days, beach days that almost always is at a location where there is surf. So here is Rel, collecting pipipi to eat and then we use these very popular shells for jewelry making. She looked so natural collecting her pipipi so I couldn't resist photographing her, especially since she was wearing a pair of shell earrings we make out of pieces of cone shells that have been tumbled in the surf and sand for decades and smoothened to a beautiful piece that looks so perfect for jewelry making.

My Ohana and I went to the Beach today! Although we didn't find any Sea Glass, we still had lots of fun in the water. When we got home, I finally learned how to wire wrap and it's beautiful if I do say so myself! I made them with the Sandalwood Seeds, Kelly Green Sea Glass, and also 24gauge gold plated wire/earring hooks.

Christmas is coming so I thought it'd be good to make some Christmas earrings. We'll be at the Maui Open Market at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu.
We hope you have the time to stop by and say Aloha! It's on Sunday and Monday! Also, we hope to be having Jewelry party's in the near future! When we do, Natural Maui will be sure to let you know!
Tomorrow is the M.O.M. Craft Fair! The food is Ono and inexpensive! I hope your excited 'cause I know I am!

We have beautiful Sea Glass and Shell jewelry. There's also the man-made tumbled glass. It's not Sea Glass but it's still gorgeous! As you would've guessed, this is a family business that my mom, sister, brother, brother in law, and my two year old nephew all help out. Me too of course.

My mom and I make the sea glass jewelry while my sister makes the man made glass jewelry...

TUMBLED SEA GLASS

This is an excellent book by Richard LaMotte that we used to learn all about the sea glass that we find all over the beaches on Maui. We have it on display at our Natural Maui table which we set up every Friday and Sunday at Whole Foods Market located in the Maui Mall, Kahului.

I highly recommend it if you are an avid sea glass collector and would like to find out more about where your sea glass may have originated from.
