Some of these things may seem silly and irrelevent but believe me, you NEED TO KNOW THIS!

Although I am the first to admit that there are exceptions to every rule, below you'll find some of the attributes you need to have (or can learn) to become a model.

As in any industry, there is usually a fine line between success and failure in modeling.

To have a chance of becoming a successful model, you first need to think and act like a professional and successful person.

An example: When a weekend golfer comes to a large area of water and has to hit over it, many times the thought pops into his head, "I sure hope I don't hit it in the water!". As soon as he says it, the mental picture raises its ugly head visualizing his hitting the ball right in the middle of the pond.

You know what happens next?

You're absolutely right! He hits the ball in the water!

On the other hand, a professional golfer comes to the same body of water and she visualizes the ball floating effortlessly to the other side (or on the green). Does this make sense to you?

Once you begin to see yourself as a successful model you'll start doing the things to make it happen. Sounds easy, doesn't it? Well, it does require work but so does working a 9-5 job.

So, now that you're visualizing yourself as a successful model, let's get to some basics you must know ...

The Physical Requirements of Modeling

If you plan to model, especially as a high fashion or runway model, you need the following physical attributes ...

a) You need to be at least 5'8" tall or taller
b) Your body weight and proportions need to flatter your height
c) You need to have a good skin complexion without lots of pimples or blemishes
d) Your hair should be in good shape (no excessive split-ends or over-dying damage)
e) Your teeth should be well taken care of, straight and white (a dynamite smile)
Look closely in the mirror and be honest with yourself. We all have limitations. Some of these things listed above you can work to improve and some (like height) you were born with.

Even if you don't have all these model attributes, don't give up hope. There are other opportunities in modeling not mentioned in this article.
<!--

Gauge whether the piece of film or digital file that you're exposing in your camera has a good chance of resulting in a sale for you.

If it's color: Is it saleable? That is, -is it a picture a photo buyer will need ...not one he already has access to. Will that transparency one day be on a photobuyer??s desk? If it's B&W, will the negative result in many future sales?

One photographer friend said she could not break the habit of snapping pictures of anything and everything on a photo excursion, then trying to make the marketing decisions a week later when the processed film returns. To make the change-over, she placed a label on the back of her camera that read: "Is it marketable?" It took her only two weeks to finally break the habit. The label is now removed. She no longer aims her camera at silhouettes of sea gulls against the setting sun (and other such "classic" shots, that do sell, but that are individually very difficult to market because thousands upon thousands of similar photos are available to photobuyers).

Instead, she now photographs specific subject matter geared to specific market areas that match her own interest areas. She found (and continues to find) dependable markets for her material by doing some sound marketing homework. >The MARKETING QUOTIENT Critique

In my seminars, I offer a free critique of photos based on their marketing potential. Since the persons who attend my seminars are photographers, I don't comment on the artistic value of the photograph, only the marketing potential. I use what I call the Marketing Quotient (MQ), a number factor ranging from 1 to 10. (Ten equals high.)

Since there's no mystery about the MQ, you can make a self-critique of your own pictures. Here's how to start:

A key factor in selling anything is the law of Supply and Demand. If there's a great supply of something, it's not going to sell briskly (e.g. the silhouette of the sea gull). If on the other hand, the supply is limited, the demand will be great. (A volcano erupting in Washington.)

Seventy-five percent of your photo's marketing worth will have to do with supply and demand. For example, if there's a reasonable demand for a picture, and it's not the kind of picture easily available in agencies, your MQ can start at 7. From this point, your MQ will go up or down.

Here are some of the factors that will cause your MQ to increase: 1.) You have an established track record with the photobuyer, or you are a "name" photographer. 2.) Your picture is available to meet a deadline. 3.) Your picture is: a) timely, up-to-date; b) lends itself to a publishing house's needs; c) matches the photobuyer's interest area; d) available for one-time use; e) has not been used recently by the competition; f) available for commercial use also and therefore has a model release; g) technically acceptable; h) good.

<!--

Vertical marketing works much in the same way. If you were to open the interior of the machine, you would find that the soft drink cans are all lined up in a vertical row. All soft drinks of one selection are slotted into one vertical column, ready for dispensing.

There's no crossover. The cans must be lined up in the same dispensing vertical row, or they will deliver a wrong selection to the customer.

If you were the serviceman and haphazardly placed the cans in the machine in random positions, the results would be chaotic and unsatisfactory to customers.

NO CENTRAL THEME

Most beginning stock photographers make the mistake of building a stock file in random fashion, with no focussed marketing themes. Their picture-taking choices are "all across the board."

Because any one photobuyer's publication appeals to a vertical market (gardeners, pilots, medical technicians, teachers, etc.) photobuyers turn to vendors who can supply them pictures within those specialty areas. They can't afford to waste time on a vendor who does not offer an extensive selection of the product in the vertical market they need.

NO TEARS MARKETING

If the customer at the vending machine is served up a soft drink that doesn't fit their choice, they become irritated and pound on the machine and demand a return of their money. "This is not what I wanted!"

The soft drink they received may be of excellent taste and quality, but it doesn't match their needs. This realization may help to assuage your disappointment when a photobuyer rejects your submission of excellent pictures. The pictures may be of high quality, but you are vending them to the wrong buyer.

Stay within the vertical markets that you enjoy photographing in, and match with markets who need photos in those subject areas. At this moment, buyers are searching for you. Don't waste film or time on picture-taking that doesn't fit into your vertical market areas.

<!--

They are probably not aware of the effect of their flash on the faces of their subject. Here is an analysis of the effect of different distances between the flash head and the lens.

The proper position of the flash is directly over the lens. This will ensure that any shadows from the flash will occur behind the head and body and not to one side. Of course, when shooting square format like Hasselblad, the flash can be fixed in that one position. For shooting with a rectangular format like Bronica ETR or Canon DSLR, the flash must be mounted on a swinging bar so that the flash can be positioned over the lens in either a horizontal or vertical shot.

I have determined through many tests that the ideal distance of the flash head above the lens is twelve inches. There are many advantages to using this distance. First, the unavoidable reflections on the forehead, nose, cheeks and chin are conducive to making the subject look good. The forehead reflection is positioned higher on the forehead, almost into the hair line and much diminished in strength. This leaves the flat portion of the forehead reflection free and retaining the natural color of the skin.

The shape of the nose is determined by the fall off of light along the sides and the position of the reflection on the bridge of the nose. When the flash is positioned closer to the lens, the bridge or indentation receives no highlight but rather the bony lower part of the nose is emphasized. The tip of the nose also benefits from the twelve inch distance of the flash head by appearing smaller and less intense.

Cheek reflections are considered acceptable when they are centered on the upper portion of the cheek. With a lower positioned flash head, the reflection highlight the unattractive line of muscle from the cheek to the nose. The twelve inch flash position also enhances the cheek bones. Chin reflections lower down on the point of the chin are unattractive and make the chin look wet. Alternatively, the twelve inch flash position just places a small crescent shaped highlight under the lip. An added benefit also occurs in the form of a more defined chin line and the placement of some double chins in shadow.

Those terrible eye glass reflections are greatly minimized with the twelve inch flash. The flash highlight now appears near the top of the eye glass, completely avoiding the area of the iris and pupil. The eyes are the most important feature of the face and ugly flash reflections can wipe out the eyes completely. An added benefit is a slight darkening at the bottom of the picture, enhancing the composition with a natural fade out.

Remember that since most natural light comes from a position over the horizon the most natural flash lighting will do the same for the face. Don??t let convenience prevent you from capturing your flash subjects in the most attractive light.

Retired portrait and wedding photographer. Modestly, I was once awarded the title of Best Wedding Photographer in Passaic, Bergen and Hudson Counties in New Jersey.

<!--

Using Windows Movie Maker, for father's day, she chose the best pics and added descriptions with some some of my favorite music, and put it in a movie. She then saved it to a CD and gift wrapped it. Wow! It was wonderful seeing flashbacks of our family life in that fashion.

If you're not happy with the outcome of some of your digital photos, but would still like to use them, why not use many of the free utilities or software available to put some finishing touches to them. They are not that complicated to use and are cheap - actually free. There are quite a few of them, but here we'll focus on the most popular choices and user friendly. With these softwares, you'll be able to store and organize, edit and share, all of your favorite little treasures.

There's a software called Picasa (picasa.google.com), probably named after Picasso. Picasa from what I've gathered is a full-featured application, very sophisticated, giving high-end results, and extremely 'user friendly".

With it's easy to use buttons, sliders, and fade-out transitions, its got to be one of the easiest software in digital imaging to use. It does all the basics such as sorting, organizing, viewing slide shows, resizing for emails, and CD photos, but does much more and with such ease.

You can also add keywords or keyword phrases, captions, create collage, back up your work. You can crop, do fill lighting, highlighting, colour temperature, and yes soft focus. It's a very impressive image editor for the price - free.

Digital imaging can be lots of fun and with the ability to create slide shows on cd's, it also makes for great gifts. In addition, aside from arranging a number of photos or images in a sequence, you can 'pan' across a still image giving the illusion of motion. You can also vary the time that the images stay onscreen using a timeline, and add audio, whether it be some voice track for narration or your favorite music track.

You want to keep in mind when creating a presentation such as my daughter did, that less is better. Pick a few well-chosen images that will make an impact. What she did was choose images of all of my kids growing up in family situations and fun. It may me realize how time had flew by and how quickly they grow up. It actually brought a tear to my eyes. It told a story of our family life and brought a lump to my throat. I didn't realize it then, but there was a message in that presentation. I couldn't have received a better gift!

<!--

Laptops have liberated photographers from their studios and offices once and for all. For the first time this year laptops have outsold desktops according to research firm Current Analysis.

In addition to your routine photo gear, here are five must-have items you need to get your mobile darkroom up and running for your next photo assignment:

LAPTOP

Your choice of laptop is an important consideration. For the most part, a consumer-level laptop such as a Dell, Gateway, or IBM ThinkPad will suffice.

On the other hand, if you are a world traveler and you plan to venture into rugged terrain where you may regularly encounter rain, dust, and extreme temperature changes - invest in a rugged laptop. While making your decision, keep in mind the thickness and dimensions of the laptop. You will need to fit this into your photo backpack, so decide carefully. It's adviseable to purchase a backpack first and bring it with you when you're shopping for a laptop.

Ensure the processing speed and random access memory (RAM) is sufficient enough to handle the processing of large digital files. You should make sure the laptop also contains a CD burner, wireless network card, and wireless mouse. Consult your salesperson. Other additional considerations include an extended life battery and power adaptors capable of handling power connections in your auto, on airplanes, and other power sources.

COMPACT DISCS

Delkin Devices offers eFilm Archival Gold CD-R's that incorporate Phthalocyanine dye and a 24k gold reflective layer. Phthalocyanine dye helps resist harmful effects of UV light, heat, and humidity, while gold's inert characteristics prevent oxidation, which causes most CD-R failure. With volatility of computer hard drives and constant threat of virus attacks, Archival Gold CD-R's provide consumers with reliable storage medium to back up images.

CARD READER

Most card readers on the market today that meet the USB 2.0 standard are suitable.

SOFTWARE

If your laptop is capable of handling Photoshop CS/CS2 it is recommended that you install it. If space limitations don??t permit their installation, then install Photoshop Elements 3.0. This obviously is your editing application, so it is advisable to install whatever application you normally use in your studio or office for a consistent digital workflow.

BACKPACK

LowePro, Tamrac, and Tenba have gotten much praise in the photo industry, however they are relatively expensive. A great alternative is the new Quantaray - Urban Gear U100 Pro Backpack available at Ritz Camera. At $79.99 for this versatile backpack is an incredible value. Not only can it handle a large SLR and array of lenses, but it has a laptop compartment, and a removable inner shell as well. Comparable backpacks are in the $200 range.

When you are ready to venture out and go mobile, do it with confidence knowing that you have all of the tools of the trade to edit your images on the road or off.

<!--

Perhaps you would point them in the direction of your latest lens instead. Or your camera bristling with buttons and switches.

Or perhaps you would tell them to go and bother someone else with their trivialities.

But, your tripod can really make you a better photographer. Sure, tripods are heavy, cumbersome and not exactly for the fashion-conscious. But they can really help.

How?

Well, firstly, setting up your camera on to a tripod actually slows you down. And by slowing down, you can start to think about what you are going to take pictures of. Think about where the subject is, where is the light coming from, what viewpoint you need to choose and how you are going to compose the shot.

Then, after mounting your camera on to the tripod, start to think about the exposure settings. Now that you have a rock solid platform, you can open your mind and think about shutter speeds and apertures. It is not uncommon for landscape photographers to use shutter speeds as long as 1, 2 or 4 seconds. The outcome of this is that you can use very small apertures or fantastic depth of field.

Or, alternatively, you can render light trails and human movement blur without risking camera shake. What possibilities can this open up for you? How will you use them? Now you open your world to great images of cityscapes, fairgrounds, water at night, car lights at night, softy lit buildings and many other possibilities.

<!--

It doesn't always go as smoothly as you might think and there can be a good deal of wastage.

Software can be cheap but the options and quality might not be what you want, especially if you are giving the calendar as a gift. The more expensive versions are worth it if you want a good dependable, flexible product. You might be able to get a free trial although this might have limitations attached.

If you use an online source then you can expect a quick turnaround, a good quality product, less hassle and frustrations and some sort of guarantee.

Consider what sort of calendar you want - do you want an image on each page, good resolution, additional text or messages? Most online companies will help you through this process and have support teams to guide you. This is what you pay for and is worth it if you wish your recipients to have top quality gifts.

If you try a do-it yourself approach then those that receive your gift will, I am sure, welcome the effort and time you have put in to making the gift.

Your MQ will decrease if your answer is a negative to any of the above.

Photobuyers make the assumption that your photos will be "good." To be marketable your photos need not be prize-winners, but they must be good.

Since you know your own marketable areas better than anyone else, you are in the best position to make your own MQ assessment. Take a weekend to go through your pictures and eliminate any in your market file that come up with a low MQ.

<!--

Little do they realize they are tossing away a gold mine. In the early days, some photographers had special agreements with their publishers or newspaper and magazine editors, that ownership of photos purchased, could revert back to them (the photographers) after three years. In some cases the agreement would state a shorter period of time. (This was in the days before the revision of the Copyright Law decreed that copyright ownership now stays with the photographer. In its earlier form, the Copyright Law transferred copyright to whoever bought a "use" right to a photo.)

COPYRIGHT MATURITY

Unfortunately, in those earlier days some photographers didn??t take advantage of an agreement provision to keep their copyrights.. They were busy with their other projects and went on to other things, as the photo industry matured. Their original negs and transparencies, lying dormant in files at book companies, newspapers, and magazines, were sometimes discarded by a junior assistant or inexperienced clerk, to make room for contemporary work. What could have been an annuity for a photographer, disappeared into the dumpster.

Of course, some organizations had the foresight, manpower, and funds to catalog and save everything. One example is TIME-LIFE. Their files of photos chronicle the life and times of America since 1936. Their latest count of images was 21,000,000, kept in their climate-controlled library at the base of Rockefeller Center in New York.

When the former director of the TIME-LIFE library, Beth Zarcone, gave me a tour of their collection, I saw youthful pictures of Muhammad Ali (13 books have been written about him in the last decade), Frank Sinatra, astronaut John Glenn, Eleanor Roosevelt, and countless others. These were pictures taken by long-gone photographers who never thought about the legacy they were creating on film.

Recently, I had a talk with Flip Schulke, famed photographer of the Martin Luther King, Jr. era, and the subsequent years of political unrest.

He said, "As a young photographer in the 60??s, I didn??t throw anything away. After all, I thought of my pictures as my kids. Who gives their kids away?" As a result, Flip has a deep selection of outtakes from his assignments and self-assignments.

"Today, I??m making more money from those pictures than I did back when I took them," says Flip.

His books and photos on Martin Luther King Jr. have earned in the six figures. A recent sale to a major TV network for a TV special, netted $24,000 in one month.

Flip also is authoring a St. Martin??s Press book about Muhammad Ali. He is working with The University of Minnesota and Macalester College (where he graduated) in St. Paul MN, on a CD-ROM featuring his photos of Dr. King.

"Stock photographers should realize that their editorial photos serve as a pension, an annuity, as you get older. When you??re an editorial stock photographer, everything becomes history," he said.

Flip pointed out that many photographers might not have the time or funds to produce their own archival CD series. One way of getting around this is to donate your collection (with limited copyright) to a university, college or museum that has the budget to edit, conduct a selection process, catalog the pictures, produce a CD, and promote it. The institution and the photographer then share in the profits.

"Some schools, however, don??t always have the funds to follow through on the complete process. If they don??t, the pictures will sit around in a box, the same way they did at your studio. Choose carefully."

DISK SPACE IS CHEAP

For present-day photographers, Flip warns that despite the convenience that digital cameras offer to photographers and publishers, the process can backfire. In many cases, a city desk editor will take a memory card from a digital camera, choose only one or two shots from the photos on it, say of a fire scene, then zap the card ?? and then hand the disk back to the photographer. This may save disk space, but it destroys the outtakes that might prove valuable to the photographer??s historical collection.

Flip Schulke warns that every photo has historical significance. "Hold on to your photos. They are your future social security.

<!--

Results of the acuteness The sight was needed: the material, design and the lens coating that goods
2. The cosmetic Lens aspect was seen thin and Clear
3. The user of the Lens comfort light and did not have the distortion

To reach 3 elements, then the lens could be seen in 2 matters, that is:
• Parameter Optic, covered:
A. The Bias index (n)
Was the comparison between the speed of the light Space empty and the speed of the light to the certain media. N = C/V

If the light came to go through 2 different medias his ray index, then the REFRACTION will happen/REFRAKSI, and a small part will be reflected.
It was increasingly big that the difference of the ray index between the two medias, increasingly big the Corner of his reflection and persentasi the light that was reflected. The ray index berbanding was inside out thickly middle the lens. So increasingly high the ray index of a lens, then increasingly thin this lens could be made.

B. The Dispersif power
The material optis that reflected the purple colour until merah with the corner – the corner that often was different, was mentioned:
The material that had the DISPERSIF Big STRENGTH (thought ABBE SMALL).

Resulting from that was produced from the analysis of the colour of this light was the existence of the WARNA.
