Walmart Being Pressured to Say No to Monsanto's GE Corn

Monsanto, that bastion of genetically modified food products that once resembled actual vegetables, is going to be selling it's newest creation, a genetically-modified (GM) sweet corn containing Bt toxin, designed to protect the plant by rupturing the stomach of any insect that feeds on it. Monsanto claims the toxin will break down before the corn makes it to your dinner table, but rats fed with the GM corn showed organ failure, and the toxin has been detected in the bodies of pregnant women.

Unmarked, unlabeled, and untested on humans — with toxins built right into the plant’s DNA. Which is to say, they are probably getting a great deal on this poison food and passing along the death to their consumers, without even a warning label.

Yeah.

Why do I not shop at Walmart? Because they put profits over people, every single time. If Walmart is doing something that appears to be for the public good then there's an ulterior motive there that we're not seeing.

So let's get this straight, James Cunningham worked at a Wal-Mart, had a papertrail medical diagnosis, brought it to his supervisor and was told it was too much paperwork to fill out so his performance reviews suffered and he was eventually fired.

Seems to me like his supervisor is the one who dropped the ball and should be shoved down the totem pole a few notches to remind him of how unimportant he really is.

It's a small thing, one man receiving unemployment benefits in the wake of an unfair firing. But I bet it's a lot more than a little thing to James Cunningham and his family.

1. Waffle maker riot - people seriously start fighting over some really shitty waffle makers.
2. Pepper spray and XBoxes - crazy chick uses pepper spray on fellow shoppers to secure a discounted XBox. Police unsure whether she'll get charged (and if she isn't then expect the number of pepper spray "incidents" to rise dramatically next year).
3. Video games and police brutality - if the crowds aren't enough to keep you home on Black Friday then perhaps the threat of an unwarranted assault by a cop leaving you unconscious on the ground unattended for 10 minutes is enough?
4. Parking lot shootings - why deal with the hassle of the shopping crowd when you can just prowl the parking lot and mug people on their way out? Of course, it should be noted that these people were shot between 1 and 2 in the morning while out shopping (let that sink in for a moment).
5. Smartphone smack down - want a deal on a smartphone? You might be able to get one for $35 but you might also get shoved to the ground and kicked in the face. For a phone.

There's no surprise that I'm not much of a fan of Black Friday and even less of a fan of Walmart. Combine the two and you have one of the lower planes of hell for me.

By the way, do you know what the Chinese call Walmart shoppers? Suckers. But they call all Americans suckers so it's really not that big a deal or even funny.

But the truth is, the program is a bad deal for everyone — except Wal-Mart.

Why? Because the charges stack strongly in Wal-Mart's favor and you'd be better off putting a $100 purchase on a credit card and paying it off that way, at half the interest rate Wal-Mart is effectively charging.

Come on now, did you really think Wal-Mart was going to put anything in place to actually HELP it's customers? Hell no, they will do anything to help you spend more money in their stores but beyond that they really do not care in the least.

Imagine a mother going to Wal-Mart on Oct. 17 and buying $100 worth of Christmas toys. She makes a down payment of $10 and pays a $5 service fee. Over the next two months she pays off the rest. In effect, she is paying $5 in interest for a $90 loan for two months: the equivalent of a credit card with a 44 percent annual percentage rate, a level most of us would consider predatory.
In comparison, even a card with an 18 percent A.P.R. would charge only half as much interest — and she could take those presents home the same day.
Then consider what would happen if she couldn’t finish all the payments. Wal-Mart would give her the money back, less $10. If she borrowed that $90 and paid $15 in interest for two months, she would have the equivalent of a jaw-dropping interest rate of 131 percent.

Shop at Wal-Mart and find yourself spending more than you think for less than you think and the lion's share of those dollars are headed straight into China where they will be used to continue to exploit an entire nation of people. Wow! Awesomeness!

A $188 million class-action verdict against Walmart Stores Inc. and Sam's Club over payment to employees for rest breaks and off-the-clock work was upheld Friday by a Pennsylvania appeals court.

A three-judge Superior Court panel said there was sufficient evidence at trial to conclude there had been a breach of contract, unjust enrichment and violations of labor laws.

The judges also ruled in a 211-page opinion that the presiding Philadelphia judge erred in determining some of the plaintiffs' legal fees, and sent that part of the case back for recalculation.

The 2006 trial, which lasted 32 days, resulted in an award of $46 million in attorneys' fees."

Gift reciepts are nice things, you can give someone a gift that they can return if they don't like it or already have it. Only there's no value on the gift receipt and Walmart is being investigated for not returning the full purchase price of the returns.

That is, they are shaving money off returns because the returner doesn't know how much the original item cost. Which is, of course, illegal and unethical.

And I expect Walmart will, eventually, be found guilty and forced to pay a fine that won't amount to a horked loogy compared to how much money they make which means Walmart comes out ahead on stealing money from customers.

I'm not sure I understand this. There was one asshole Mexican worker being a total asshole to his/her co-workers and calling them racially charged things and, instead of firing them, the managers let it go until the abused workers filed a lawsuit?

Oh wait, they did fire the jerk after about 8 solid months of being a jerk. And the quoted suit says they acted swiftly as soon as they became aware of how utterly egregious the jerk was being.

But it'll still cost Walmart $440,000 in a settlement which they will appeal and make stretch out another four or five years and the only ones making any money are the lawyers.

They consisted of 22 common grocery goods such as milk, cereal and rice; 10 general merchandise products such as clothing and home furnishings; and three health and beauty items.

Target's shopping cart rang in at $269.13 (pre-tax), a hair lower than the $271.07 charged at Wal-Mart.

You're right, that's not a huge difference but there is a huge difference in the shopping experience between the two stores. Target stores are clean, well-lit and well-staffed whereas most every Wal-Mart I've been in is disheveled, dingy, dark in places and its nearly impossible to find someone to help you.

There's actually a psychological reason for this, people shopping in a store that looks like crap are tricked into thinking they are getting a better deal because the store is shabby.

Me? I prefer to shop at Target (though admittedly less so since the CEO of Target is a homophobic asshat) because the company does not have a track record of exploitation at every turn, Target does not gouge employees and force them to work off the clock, Target does not lie, cheat and steal at every turn. Wal-Mart has and Wal-Mart does.

Razor Blade Flavor Ice Cream

The woman was eating ice cream she'd gotten at Wal-Mart and found a piece of a broken razor blade in the ice cream that cut her lip when she accidentally ate it.

The Wal-Mart customer service reps response? "I'm sorry, I hope your day gets better." Which is to say, they didn't really give a damn. At least not at first, now that the story is going national, they care alot because this is now about damage control.

Could this have happened to another big box retailer? Sure. But it didn't, it happened to Wal-Mart.

What would have happened if a child had eaten that razor blade? What would have happened if she'd somehow swallowed the blade bit? It could have perforated her throat and stomach. It could have killed her really.

An additional Supercenter per 100,000 residents increases average BMI by 0.24 units and the obesity rate by 2.3% points. These results imply that the proliferation of Walmart Supercenters explains 10.5% of the rise in obesity since the late 1980s, but the resulting increase in medical expenditures offsets only a small portion of consumers' savings from shopping at Supercenters.

This allegation could be leveled at any large seller of food, especially fast food joints that sell, basically, fatty, salty pseudo-meat products on highly processed quasi-breadlike substances and then slather it all in mayonnaise.

But, as the largest seller of food in America, Wal-Mart deserves a big part of the blame in making crappy food cheap and good food more expensive.

Then again, there needs to be a national program in our schools to teach kids how to eat more healthy diets and the importance of regular exercise.

Shipping Money to China Even Faster

This post is a forward from my mom. The final paragraph is the most key to me. If you read nothing else in this post, please read the last paragraph before my thoughts.

The Emma Maersk, part of a Danish shipping line, is shown in the photos below.

What a ship....no wonder 'Made in China ' is displacing North American made goods big time. This monster transports goods across the Pacific in just 5 days!! This is one of three ships presently in service, with another two ships commissioned, to be completed in 2012.

These ships were commissioned by Wal-Mart to get all their goods and stuff from China. They hold an incredible 15,000 containers and have a 207 foot deck beam!! The full crew is just 13 people on a ship longer than a US Aircraft Carrier (which has a crew of 5,000). With it's 207' beam it is too big to fit through the Panama or Suez Canals.

The goods arrive 4 days before the typical container ship (18-20 knots) on a China-to-California run. Ninety-one percent (91%!) of Walmart products are made in China. So this behemoth is hugely competitive even when carrying perishable goods. The ship was built in five sections. The sections floated together and then welded. The command bridge is higher than a 10-story building and has 11 cargo crane rigs that can operate simultaneously unloading the entire ship in less than two hours.

A recent documentary in late March, 2010 on the History Channel noted that all of these containers are shipped back to China, EMPTY. Yep, that's right. The United States send nothing back on these ships. What does that tell you about the current financial state of this country? Just keep buying those imported goods (mostly gadgets) until you run out of money.

The New York Times reported today that Walmart is spending millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours fighting a $7,000 fine assessed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after a Walmart employee was trampled to death by a crowd at a store on Long Island. Though the company has taken steps to address the problems that led to the unfortunate incident, it is continuing to resist the fine because it feels that “the government is improperly trying to define ‘crowd trampling’ as an occupational hazard that retailers must take action to prevent”:

In contesting the penalty, Wal-Mart has filed 20 motions and responses totaling nearly 400 pages and has spent at least $2 million on legal fees, according to OSHA’s calculations. The dispute has become so heated — and Wal-Mart’s defense so vigorous — that officials at OSHA, an arm of the Labor Department, complain that they have had to devote huge numbers of staff time to the case, including 4,725 hours of work by employees in the legal office.

Walmart’s resistance to OSHA is part and parcel of a Big Business culture that abhors common sense safety regulations. Oh yes, they are trying to fight a precedent setting situation by which other workers who die while working at Walmart due to Walmart's negligence and general cheapness know they'll be in for a knock down drag out fight. It isn't about the money now, its about the money later.

Consumer Reports Confirms that Walmart Sucks

Best places to shop for everything - Yahoo! Finance: "Last year shoppers spent $405 billion at Walmart, the world’s largest retailer. But according to a new study by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, they might be better off if they switch stores."

Where Walmart sucks, CostCo shines. It was the only store in the survey (which included Walmart, CostCo, JCPenney, Sears, Dillard's and Meijer among others) that was judged a much better than average value.

What did Walmart win in? Longest lines. Walmart also scored "well" for crappy customer service. Almost 75% of shoppers at Walmart reported at least one problem and half had two or more complaints about the stores or their staff.

So let's see if we've got this right. Walmart's prices aren't better, their service is horrid, they have long lines and they have a long, long history of employee exploitation, manipulation and discrimination.

And people continue to shop there why? Exactly.

Well That Was Pretty Easy

Okay, so I was a little off on the timeline of the move to the new set up. I looked into it and it was dead simple to change it over from a sub domain on Intellectual Poison to its own standalone blogspot hosted blog.

Now that we're fully within the Blogger/Google fold, I will probably start to experiment with some of the other new goodies that Blogger's been rolling out like customized templates, widgets and other stuff.

But I will try to keep an eye on what the blog exists for, namely highlighting Wally World's misdeeds across the globe.

One thing that is a bummer is that all of the comments submitted via Haloscan are currently locked up in an unusable format. I'm hopeful that Disqus will figure out the way to import those comments here because there were some very good comments submitted over the years and it would be a real shame to lose them forever.

For now I'm using the built-in Blogger comment system but expect to install Disqus in relatively short order.

Changes A'Coming

Well folks, Blogger keeps sending me big flashing signals that I will have to make some changes to how Wal-Mart is Pure Evil is published. I either need to move the blog further under Blogger's umbrella or take it to another platform entirely. Neither is especially what I want to do but I don't get to choose none of the above here.

So, sometime in the next few days or week I will be changing WIPE from this current URL (http://www.intellectualpoison.com/WalMartisPureEvil.html) and it will be changing to WalMartisPureEvil.blogspot.com.

It is the simplest solution. I am hoping that this last post will remain available on the current URL to help direct readers to the new location. If not then I'll have to figure out how to post a redirect page.

Thank you all for your eyes and thoughts over these last few years. I've slowed down on my posts but have not, for an instant, stopped my private war against the big box hell hole that is Wal-Mart. The fight will continue because it must continue.

WalMart is in No Hurry

Super Walmarts flood the Rochester region and there is a certain inevitability to their presence. They will slowly but surely squeeze other businesses to either adapt to them or go out of business.

WalMart is a retail anaconda. They get ahold of you (you being your locality) and then apply a steady pressure to slowly kill you with low prices, ugly stores, bad customer service and under-benefited employees making almost enough to get by.

It has been a formula for success but there are more and more people who refuse to patronize the big box hell holes. I am obviously one of them but there are more out there and there are more joining our ranks every day.

Will there ever be enough to stop the behemoth? Well ever is a damned long time. Do I think Walmart will exist forever into the future? No but then nothing will. Do I think WalMart is going anywhere in my lifetime? No, no I don't. I think they will continue to grow and expand and homogenize areas so that everyone can get the same crap at low prices.

And no, I don't think that's a good thing at all. I embrace diversity, I love locally produced goods, I love locally grown produce, I love knowing that the money I spend at my local store stays in the area rather than being shipped off to China where those monies are used to subjugate more workers to produce schlock for our over-consumptive and under-aware country.

Until the pervasive more is always better mentality is changed to one of quality trumps quantity, WalMart will continue to grow and consume our towns, our money and our souls.

I prefer to hold on to my soul and will never spend a dime of my money at WalMart. If you are in a position to make your purchases elsewhere then I would encourage you to do the same.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that this is likely an inventory control measure and not some not-so-subtle racial slap by selling white Barbie at full price and black Barbie at half price.

But it sure looks bad on the shelves and it sure will send a message to little black girls who see that white Barbie is worth twice as much as black Barbie.

And that's not a message that should be sent to any child about any demographic.

Walmart to Pay More Than $11.7 Million to Settle EEOC Sex Discrimination Suit which works out to a pretty pathetic 585 minutes of proft for Wal-Mart. Barely even a third of a day's lost profits for a business that routinely discriminates against all manner of people.

Wal-Mart makes $20,000 a minute in profit, each and every minute of each and every day. That equates to $10.3 billion a year.

This $11.7 million fine works out to 585 minutes of lost profit. There are 1440 minutes in a day.

Until Wal-Mart is hit with a fine that actually hurts them, they will continue to discriminate, exploit and otherwise misbehave. There is one thing big stupid evil corporations care about and that is their bottom line. Start to make an impact there and they'll straighten up and fly right damned fast.

Otherwise all of these lawsuits are nothing but pebbles in the way of a juggernaut.

The Real Reason We Hate Wal-Mart

In fact, it does not matter what Wal-Mart does. We will still hate it. Because our hatred for Wal-Mart is not, in fact, based on anything the company does; it is based on what the company is. It is a big box. A big, bland, concrete warehouse. It hurts us, the very vision of it. Wal-Mart comes into town and builds an ugly box and then all the regular little stores shut down, and all that is left is a big ugly box on the outskirts of town. And inside that box are bright, harsh lights and ugly Republican people and lots of NASCAR-branded items and a pervasive atmosphere of small-town hopelessness.

But let's not gloss over their business practices, multiple exploitation and sexual harassment lawsuits and the river of money heading into China for often lead tainted pre-landfill junk.

But we're supposed to forget about all of that because they are "going green". Yeah, no.
