New Year New Goals

My, how time flies when you're having fun. This is a new year with new goals. We know about all the data breaches and how people are following folks on the dark web. My prayer for you this year is that God will protect you online and offline. If anyone's internet is going to be slow this year, it will be the hackers. If anyone's internet will be disabled, it will be internet hackers. I cancel every assignment that the enemy tries to rail against you in 2026. I release angelic protection for you and your family. You will pray for family members. You will pray for your children. God is reuniting parents with kids and husbands with wives.

I pray for world peace so that we can get some rest. We have been commanded to pray for those in leadership, and that is what I am continuing to do. You will send your child to school, and they will get there on time and be their best. Teachers will be among the highest paid in the nation for careers. The government will put more into education than they do into the prison system. They will drop a lot of these marijuana charges that our young people are getting while others are legally selling marijuana under a unique form.

African American women will continue to go natural now that we know for certain that relaxers have been causing various cancers in our women. Hairdressers will use their skills as a ministry and elevate women through this process.

Fathers will take care of their children even if single moms act like they want to do it all. You just won't let them. Churches will have various ministries to help build up the community and help us take some of these homeless and mentally ill people off the streets. Career politicians will get somewhere and sit down while new people get out there and make a difference.

We will support African American businesses and turn over dollars in our communities. However, we will not overprice over products and then wonder why no one is showing up. Women will not over-task themselves with a bunch of organizations because charity begins at home. We will have balanced lives, good marriages and promotions on the job.

Our side hustles will finally see the light of day and turn into the legitimate businesses that God has ordained us to have. We will learn how to conduct business in the proper manner and get the training that we need, be it free or paid.

We will continue to show up at church and not be too judgmental of ministers because God will judge them soon enough. People will continue to support ministers and congregations that are giving back to the community. Finally, we will praise the Lord, for this is what we have been commanded to do, and when God speaks, we will move immediately because obedience is better than sacrifice (I Samuel 15:22).

Easter Weekend

After Christmas, this weekend represents one of the most high holiest days of Christianity. It is on Good Friday that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ laid down his life for humanity. He arose on what we recognize as Easter or Resurrection Sunday. I pray that you will go forth this year knowing that every trick of the enemy is defeated. I have realized as of late why some choose to stay home and not worship. We have too many bullies in Christianity and too many people who work a job every day not knowing that their Christianity is on display.

If you are so insecure that you have to bully someone to make yourself feel good, then you need to go back to the altar. Bullies are insecure and they are losing control. When people lose control, they lash out at others and bully them. Jesus died on the cross for that. Sometimes, I wonder why more are not flocking to the house of God. They just don't want to be bothered. Even with everything that is going on, you need a Saviour.

So as people press their way in on Sunday, try to be on your best behavior. Don't be a pushy usher. Don't be a bully from the pulpit because they don't join your church. God did not assign everyone to your ministry. Don't go back to work on Monday and act like you didn't have a life-changing experience on Sunday. When we have taken one last breath and passed from this life to the next, only what you do for Christ will last.

Financial Goals for 2025

What are your financial goals for 2025? Where do you hope to be financially? Before thinking about all of that, be sure to secure your identity. People are scouring the internet to steal people's identities. I would like to think that this is a small percentage of people but the numbers keep increasing and unfortunately, people are getting greedier.

Check your credit a few times a year. Most people check it more than that through apps like Credit Karma and Nerd Wallet. Your credit belongs to you and not to someone else. Freeze your credit reports on TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. People cannot apply on your credit for homes, cars, apartments, credit cards, etc. if you freeze your credit. You will also receive an alert that someone attempted to apply for credit. You must have a monitor service like True Identity, Creditwise, Trusted ID, All Clear ID, Protect My ID or some other credit notifier. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is also your friend. Sign up for their newsletters. The Federal Trade Commission also has consumer alerts to look out for. The health care industry is also open to scams. Check consumer alerts with the Office of Health and Human Services.

I volunteer with my sorority. To work with youth, you have to have a background check. It is an extensive background check. I found out that someone had used my identity to apply for an apartment. I don't know if they ever got the apartment, but this took place several years before I started freezing my credit. People might say. You are not that important. Who would want to steal your identity? But you are important because you have an established identity.

Now, I am noticing with these data breaches how our information can appear on the dark web. Sure, I get emails about this and have to utilize extra layers of protection to secure my identity. I am even learning that scammers are constantly calling older adults, widows, and other people in an attempt to scam them. Personnel at banks tell stories of how elders have been swindled out of money because no one is really monitoring their affairs.

Scammers feed them some sort of sad story and they end of sending them money and sometimes their life savings. I have seen the story on the news about this happening to educated people and the like. I have come face to face or rather voice to voice with scammers. It is a good idea to have scam filters on your phone. If it's that important, they can just send you a letter.

Know how to stop a scam. Subscribe to newsletters. AARP works hard to keep older people informed. That is the best twelve to fifteen dollars that you can spend in a year. As people get older, they are not working and are missing out on a lot of the social connections that many working or very active people have. Someone can call them and give them attention and talk to them about things they like to discuss over a period. It doesn't take long. They will get sent money. This is money that is meant for bills, groceries, and medical bills. Stay informed. Stay in the know. Avoid the scams.

Back to the Future

What is the future of AI, and what will it mean for us? And no, I am not AI. I am actually typing this myself. I know if I need some help, AI would stand ready to assist. Are we becoming too dependent on technology? I live in Memphis, Tennessee, and Elon Musk plans to build a supercomputer in Memphis. It's been in the news. See this article. What does this mean for our city and what does it mean for the future of AI?

Memphis is known for having some of the best drinking water in the United States. We are concerned about that. However, MLGW officials have said that the supercomputer center will use recycled wastewater. I sure hope that this is true. News reports say the supercomputer center will use a million gallons of water a day. You know we will be watching this. We are also concerned about our power grid. There are already too many outages in this town when we have severe weather. It appears that is being fixed.

There is also the question of the economic impact this company will have in Memphis. Unfortunately, Memphis is known for giving away the store when it comes to tax credits. I hope this is not the case. We need a company to come to this town and make some major investments. That money can be used for education, housing the homeless population, or building up the electrical infrastructure. So much to consider. We are also trying to get the skinny on how many people will actually be employed there. Since it's AI, I am not expecting a lot of people.

At the writing of this article. I have learned that Elon Musk has not sought tax incentives from the Memphis Edge Board for this supercomputer project. That is encouraging news. I will continue to await news updates to see if anything else develops. According to a news report, Atlanta was considering this project. Perhaps the city didn't think it would benefit them.

The fact remains that there is a big discrepancy in income in the Memphis metropolitan area. Studies show nearly 48% of Memphians make less than $35,000 a year. We need some companies coming into this town to provide some economic opportunities. Maybe, the crime rate will go down. Right now, Memphis is considered one of the most dangerous cities in the nation. It didn't use to be that way. It appears a lot of this took place over the last few years.

The new Police Chief C. J. Davis brought to light some of the sentencing laws. From what we know, repeat offenders have low bonds and are back on the streets within days of committing a crime. That is not good. Something has to be done. So, it is my hope that this supercomputer will bring some super security along with it. Maybe it will help provide some super attention to the poverty rate in Memphis. Then, most importantly, maybe the computer can be a super supporter of education.

The Gift of Christmas

Jesus is the Reason for the Season

Christmas is a gift. Jesus is the reason for the season. Many people who don't believe in Jesus also celebrate this holiday. It is important to realize why we are celebrating. It is not all about Santa Claus although this is an excellent extension to give our young people hope and to have a reason to give.

I remember I was around ten or eleven when I found out there was no Santa Claus. I saw my grandmother hiding gifts in the closet. I must say I think that I took it well. Some of my classmates probably knew there was no Santa Claus. However, no one was trying to spoil it for anybody else. If they believe, we let them believe until they find out on their own.

As an adult, I heard an interesting story as to why there is a Santa Claus. There was actually a man about two thousand years ago who went around giving gifts. Thus, Saint Nicholas was born, and the way the minister told it made so much sense.

The Significance of Christ

We thank God for sending Jesus. I have often heard people say that many can receive the baby, but some can't receive the Saviour. As Christians, it is up to us to influence people to Christ. Sometimes, this can take place just by you being you. People need to know that there is freedom in Christ. There is gifting in believing in Jesus. I think man sometimes gets carried away and can turn people away from Christ. The Bible declares that my commandments are not grievous (I John 5:3).

It is important to know the nature of Christ. When you know the nature of Christ, you will realize what is Christ and what is not Christ when you see it. I have often heard that billionaires or others who are very wealthy start donating their money to charity when they get older. People don't want to get to heaven and have God ask them why they didn't share or feed His flock when you had much substance. By the same token, I have seen various ministries in the news because they were exposed by the media. The media said that they took from poor believers to build up their wealth. You can just google this on the web. Different newspapers have done different stories over the years. I don't want to single out any particular ministry.

I know that God wants us all to have nice things. He also asks us to be sober and vigilant because our adversary will sift us as wheat (1 Peter 5:8). Understand that fornication and sins of the flesh are not the only sins in the Bible. Greed is also a sin. Jealousy is also a sin and we as believers have to constantly ask God to give us the spirit of discernment. God wants us to support ministries and give the tithe that He has commanded but God wants you to be prosperous as well.

You are not wicked because you want to travel the world. You are not a sinner because you want a designer handbag. You are not greedy because you want to go to various universities or send your child to the best schools. You choose to spend your money how you choose to spend it. Some people love travel. Others love clothes. Still others love fine dining. You work hard and you live the life that you want to live. You and yours are paying your bills.

There are so many people who don't even go to church. They will send their tithes but they are not impressed with all the begging and none of the outward manifestation of taking care of the least of these thy brethren. They think that the church is supposed to do it all. The church cannot do it all. If it concerns you, you might have to pick up the purpose.

That's why people need to start non-profit organizations. You can take up some of the causes that the church is not taking up. You can start the after-school programs. You can start the food pantries. You can create homeless shelters if this is something God is leading you to do.

You might face resistance and attack because you are actually getting to the root cause of an issue. Others might start doing what you are doing to try to make it seem like you are not doing anything. You can write the book. You can film a documentary.

The church is not a bank where you give your tithes and then go back and ask them to pay your utilities. You keep your money for your own bills and give them what you understand God has commanded you to do. For whatever reason, I know when people are asking for your overage. I don't know what it is about humans that they sometimes can't stand to see the people of God increase. That is a reason why God does not always give His people what He has in store for us until we can exercise restraints at all levels.

There are too many people at the gate trying to see what God is going to do and they are ready to receive or snatch what God has. No, you don't have to play the victim but you don't have to play the fool either. I pray that God will give you the discernment that you need this holiday season. I pray that you will be the lender and not the borrower. I pray that God will bless you for your charitable giving and that you will reap even where you have not sown. I pray that God will give you a bamboo blessing and it will spring up when needed. I pray that God will free you up from that taskmaster who is trying to overburden you so that you won't be able to do the work of the Lord.

The Gift of Salvation

Salvation is a gift from God. If Jesus is calling you, receive Him while you can. I have heard people say that God is not calling them. Maybe, they meant that He wasn't calling them to ministry or something.

I hope that they didn't mean that He wasn't calling them to salvation. To me that is scary. My Bible tells me that God is not willing that any man should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9).

There are so many people who do not believe. I pray that before they leave this earth God will reveal Himself to them.

Pray for Israel

I am sure you are aware of what has been happening in the Middle East. Hamas has attacked Israel. They have killed and kidnapped many including Americans. God encourages us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6). Hamas is basically located in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Israel is the apple of God's eye. If this is something that you struggle with, get over it. It was before our time and has to deal with thousands of years ago and the Abrahamic covenant. Read Genesis chapter 22 for further insight. A lot of what is happening has much to do with what God promised Israel and how He would increase them. A lot of the increase had to deal with possessing land, taking territory, and fighting enemies. Not much has changed. Unfortunately, other people are being affected by this in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. They may not be terrorists, but this is the result of conflict.

The Significance of Israel to Christians

Jesus came to this earth through Jewish lineage. He came so that those who were not Jewish might be saved. This was a part of God's plan. Yes, those who are Jewish don't all believe in Jesus, but that is not for us to deal with. We thank God that we were grafted in and God loves us like He loves Israel. However, the enemy knows what salvation costs. He knows about God's covenant with Abraham and he just wants to keep up some mess.

Like a thief in the night, the enemy uses whoever he can to keep issues brewing in the Middle East. These are things that we just have to deal with. The United States is an ally of Israel and is supporting them. Of course, this is smart since scripture has asked us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

God has constantly covered the United States from an abundance of evil. I realize we had 9/11 but some countries like Israel or Ukraine live with that threat on the regular.

Let's Get Ourselves Together!

All of these issues that are going on in the world are a sign for us to get ourselves together. The Bible reads that in the last days, there will be wars and rumors of wars. Read more in Matthew 24:6-7. It speaks of a nation rising against a nation. There shall be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in diverse places. Recently an earthquake in Afghanistan killed over two thousand people. In September, an earthquake struck Morocco killing about three thousand people.

According to the Bible, these are the beginnings of sorrow. Those who are reading this newsletter have survived the Covid pandemic. Many of us witnessed loved ones, co-workers, church members, and those in the community who did not make it. These are the times to try men's and women's souls.

Stay encouraged. Stay prayed up. Stay connected to a good ministry. You would be amazed at how affiliation will keep you in the day of trouble. A good pastor prays for his flock. No matter what is going on, keep praise. You are still alive for a reason and it is to witness those who may be lost.

Pray for the Unsaved and the Uninformed!

Let's pray for those who are not saved and who feel that God and Jesus are not relevant. This is not a time to straddle the fence. However, God and Jesus are the only ones who will help you in these last and evil days. Some wonder how Israel didn't know that Hamas was planning an attack. America was blindsided by 9/11. That's what the enemy does. He catches you off guard. He majors in distractions that keep your focus off the main thing.

Israel is not the first country to be blindsided and unfortunately, it won't be the last. Let's just pray for peace in the Middle East and ask God to cover America.

Heavenly Father, we ask you to forgive us for all our sins. We pray for the Peace of Israel and countries in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. We ask that your angels will guide those in bondage to safety. We pray that you will make a way of escape for those who have been kidnapped.

Help those who are being forced to flee to find refuge and help in a time of need. Cover all who call on your name and help them. You said, "You would save your anointed. Hear from your holy heaven, and pull them up with your mighty hand."(Psalm 20:6) Hide those who are fleeing from their enemies (Psalm 64:2-8). Give those who are charged with rescue angelic assistance. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen

Good With God

I was listening to a sermon today and was shocked to find out some information. The preacher said that one of the top theological schools in the country now had an atheist residing over their chaplains. Of course, I had to Google to see if this was the case. So many times people just toss out information and at times it is not always accurate. Upon conducting a brief Google search, I found out that it was true. Some of the references were from a few years back. To me, it is unclear if he is still in charge of the chaplains there, but he is still one of their chaplains. Harvard has many chaplains from different backgrounds.

Then, I also found out that this man also wrote a book called Good Without God. You can Google yourself to find out who the author is. That is why I am adamant about people supporting Christian authors, Christian films, Christian TV Shows, and Christian anything. We often have to jump through many hurdles to get our messages out there. I would like to make a declaration that I am good with God and that He has made all the difference in my life.

It is so easy not to have any accountability, standards, or conscience. So many people just want to do any darn thing, but if you are a Christian you are held to some standards. Don't get me wrong. We live in a free country and we can believe what we choose to believe. But please stop trying to shoot down everything that Christians have to say.

Nowadays, the government wants to threaten ministries that take a stand. We need to let ministries take a stand. We also need to put prayer back in schools. How long will we let the assault on our young people continue? There have been so many school shootings in the last few years that it is just sickening. Not to mention, the assaults happening on college campuses. We have tried a little of this and a little of that. Now, it's time to try a lot of praying.

Sometimes when the list of billionaires comes out, I would Google to see who believes in God. I was encouraged when I found out that Rihanna is actually a Christian. I think Oprah might have said that she believes in God. Why is it that when people make so much money they want to denounce God? Could it be that they are into idol worship? Or maybe, they just don't want to have any connection to a higher power? Who knows? I will just say that I am good with God and hope to remain good with Him.

Keep Memphis Lifted in Prayer

This is still the start of the new year. I had planned on writing about something related to goals for 2023. Yet, I find myself asking those who have a prayer life to keep Memphis lifted in prayer. By now, you have heard of the senseless killing of Tyre Nichols through police brutality. There were several people on the scene. They are being held accountable. Five fired police officers face about seven fresh charges, including second degree murder. Two more officers have been relieved of duty pending an investigation.

From the Sky Cop camera and body cam footage that we saw, they just jerked Mr. Nichols out of the car and started beating him. This is why people say it seems personal. There was no, “May we see your license and registration?” There was no, “You were going 55 in a 45 mile per hour zone.” This has not been standard operating procedure in Memphis.

These officers are a part of the now defunct Scorpion Unit that was created two years ago by our fairly new police chief, CJ Davis, to fight street crime. Our district attorney general is moving swiftly. The fire department has even fired two paramedics and a fire lieutenant who were on the scene.

My heart goes out to his family because Tyre knew there was nothing to do but run. They had blood on their minds from the word go. Our young people should not be fearing for their lives. I should not be fearing for my life. I know we need police officers and special units, but they need to put more money into training them.

CASH STRAPPED AMERICA

I am glad that things are getting better for people. I like seeing people hustle and try to obtain the things that God wants them to have. Hard work hasn't ever hurt anyone and we need to instill this in our young people. Get a plan for your life. Go to college or trade school. I realize as a teacher we have been taught to encourage our kids to go to college. That's true, but it's also true about the many other professions out there where they can make good money.

I am so excited about Memphis and the surrounding area and the companies that are coming here like Ford Motor Company in Stanton, Tennessee with Blue Oval City. We have to continue to build up our educational systems. Give the schools money for buildings. Make sure excellent charter schools are getting their fair share. There are also many foundations in Memphis that give money. I encourage them to give to some of these excellent charter schools. On their website, I have seen that some don't fund charter schools.

My husband always reminds me that college isn't for every child. That is the reality. We thank God for the ones who are able to graduate from high school and go to college. We also thank him for the ones who find their niche in other trades. I am encouraged by the fact that they put the technical emphasis back in the schools. When we were in high school, they had home economics, Future Homemakers of America, DECA, Future Farmers of America, and shop. We also have to understand the reality that a lot of our children come from low-income backgrounds.

My background is poor, low economics, or whatever buzzword we are using today. I was raised by my grandmother because she did what parents do. She helped her kids raise their kids. There was not a lot of industry in Grand Junction, Tennessee. To this day, there is still not a lot of industry there for whatever reason. Everyone didn't want to work in the cotton fields in the 60s, and I couldn't much blame them. They probably weren't paying much. My Mom like her siblings went to Memphis to get a job. My Dad and many of his siblings moved north to Detroit and Illinois. My dad retired from Ford.

We thank God for parents who were able to support their children while they went somewhere to make a life. Of course, my Mom always came to check on me, Jackie, and Carl. She had my brother Will with her. Then my brother Carl went to stay with her. After my grandmother died, she raised my sister Jackie, and I stayed with her during summer breaks or holiday breaks while attending college. Happy to say that all of my siblings have careers and have gotten educated. All of my siblings have started businesses. My grandmother and Mom didn't play about raising kids. My siblings are no different.

As a parent, you need to demand to your school board that these technical programs are available in high school. I have taught many young girls who were looking forward to going to high school to take cosmetology. I am not sure how many schools have this program, but you can make a good living as a hairstylist. Our young men can make a good living as plumbers, electricians, mechanics, carpenters, HVAC specialists, and many other trades. The Hispanic population has come to America and basically, they are taking territory in construction and landscaping. Why are many of our urban inner city youth being left out of the loop? Yawl better wake up.

This crime rate in Memphis will go down when we equip our young people with some ways to make legal money once they leave high school. Unfortunately, some of our parents will have to do a better job getting a handle on their child's behavior at an early age. They need to be disciplined and know who runs this. If not, they will try and run you when they get older. My parents weren't going and I wasn't trying to try anybody because you would end up on the ground.

Integrity Check

Integrity checks are happening now. The Bible says "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent." (Acts 17:30) So, it is safe to say that it is time to come clean and live the best everyday life that you can possibly live. We will be held accountable for our actions down here. God wants us to be joyful. God wants us to have fun. God wants us to be healthy and prosperous. But, God does not want us to wound people in the process of obtaining stuff. God does not want us to be a hindrance to others or to ministry.

If I didn't watch the news, I would not be aware of the crime happening in my community and throughout the country. After Japan's prime minister died, I saw their crime statistics. They don't have many shooting deaths like we do in America. I hear Japan's low crime rate comes with some flaws, but if it is saving people's lives and keeping people from committing violent crimes, I think that is positive.

We also must invest more in the front end of education. Teachers need to be paid more. We also need to make sure that people are sending children to school by age 5. If parents say they are homeschooling their children, they need to provide proof of a homeschooling network they are a part of. We owe this to our children. Sometimes homeschooling can lead to excellent reading outcomes, but at the same time, the math, Algebra, and Geometry skills may be lacking. I think we have fabulous parents, but they are not experts in all subjects unless they are teachers.

When I was growing up, I could see the collaboration between the teachers and my grandmother. She did not question the teacher's comments on my report card. These teachers were a part of our community. Some of them attended the church that I attended. They had also taught my mother, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Most importantly, they had worked with my grandmother who had been a cafeteria worker. If you know people, you know a lie when you hear it and you also know the truth.

Parents must go back to partnering with the teacher to raise their children. I don't think most teachers spend their time lying on students. I would hope that they have better things to do than that. A lot of individuals are called to teach. I realize we have skeptics who question this, but once they learn to follow God's instructions then they can believe that other people are actually doing what God called them to do the first time He said it.

Stay Prayerful

It is a new year and a new season. We should remain prayerful. It seems as if countries can not contain themselves without involvement from the United States. We have pulled out of Afghanistan and now Russia is threatening to invade Ukraine. Pray that the will of the Lord be done in the earth. Pray for kings, queens, presidents, and rulers of countries.

We know that according to prophecy some things will occur. The United States is at a pivotal time where the country like the rest of the world is recovering from the coronavirus. The people of the U.S. need help and the economy is in a recovery period. Now, we have to spend money to send troops to Eastern Europe because Vladimir Putin wants to take territory. This is also endangering the lives of our young people who are serving in the various military.

Pray for the salvation of leaders in these foreign countries. It just seems like some of them are always wanting to take center stage so that they can be in the news. Pray for peace. Pray for salvation. Pray Psalms 91 that God will cover us. Pray Psalms 121 that people will look towards the hills from whence cometh their help.

Divine Protection

First of all, I am praying for those impacted by tornadoes that sweep through at least six states. My condolences to those who lost relatives, friends, neighbors, co-workers or others in the series of tornadoes. I like many others pressed my way to church today. For many of us, it may seem routine. For others, it is what we do on Sundays since we don't really have to be virtual. Like I and many others, it was an opportunity to give God praise for divine protection.

Ironically, I had gone to church this past Tuesday for Divine Protection Night. I usually press my way on that particular day and take photos of relatives, bills, business plans, and other things that I want to lay before the Lord. Sometimes, we take God's goodness for granted. I know those who were trapped in the candle factory or at work at that Amazon plant had no idea that this type of fate awaited them. Too many times, we put our religious life on the back burner and don't take it as seriously as we should. If you have been alive for any length of time, you know that situations, weather, and other things are just a little bit strange these days.

We are still in a pandemic although I would like to think that we are heading out of that. People who I thought that I could trade stories with as we aged are no longer here. I still have joy even though we have lost many in 2021 and just trying to make it to 2022 for better days. I hope that you take a few things with you in the new year. I hope that you take some faith with you because you will need it. I hope that you take a prayer life with you because it is necessary. I hope that you take peace with you because that's the only thing that can help you keep your sanity.

You Can Be A Witness

We made it to 2021. We have suffered a lot in the last year. It can be summed up or attributed to one word...Coronavirus. This disease or virus has taken a toll on America. I would like to think that we are in recovery mode. Yet, we still have millions of Americans that need to be vaccinated. I have attended too many funerals attributed to Coronavirus and have heard of many that have had the virus and recovered. My job has been virtual since March of last year. Most churches have been virtual since last April. Yet, I still feel like being a witness for the Lord.

Sometimes, I wonder why are we going through all of this. I just know from history that every generation has seen a plague, virus, or flu. Click here for History of pandemics for Americans. We just pray and go through. While we are at home a lot, we are still working. We can witness more, even at home. Many of us are on social media more. Even those who used to complain about social media must embrace it.

Homes that didn't have technology now have it. I remember when I would give assignments and students would tell me they wouldn't be able to go to the library. That is not the case in most homes now. They can just hop on the internet and do their research.

Many people had gotten lazy and would not church regularly. Now, services are virtual. I wonder when things fully open up if people will flock to the house of God. Our church closed for in-person services in April. We went back around October or November for one service, and we haven't been back since because of the COVID-19 numbers in our county.

I still feel the need to witness to people. We have young people dying from COVID-19 and middle-aged and older people. Now, they are rolling out vaccines. I signed up for testing in the teacher category. I know they really want us to return to school. I would like to go back when everything is ready. This virus is just so mysterious.

Even before this virus hit, I believed that people were slowly being raptured. With the events of late, I still believe that to be true. I have been trying to encourage people everywhere I go to get right and stay right. I have prayed for deaths to slow down and they have not. I have asked God can we catch a break, and we caught one because we have the vaccines for COVID-19.

I will continue to be a witness and hope that I can maintain some longevity down here. You can be a witness as well. Will you?

When You Pray

It has really been on my mind lately that we as Americans might need to pray more. We as a human race are under attack. We need to pray. We know that God permits and allows some things because we need to turn our attention and focus back on Him. He is the creator. A lot of things that use to be so important to us are not quite as important as staying healthy. We are all trying to stay healthy and keep a roof over our heads. God is calling us to a higher relationship with Him. We can't really say we know Him and never read His Word. We need to read God's Word. When we read His Word, I know that He will reveal His will and plan for us. God is such a patient God. If we had been in charge, everything would have been finished and over with several thousand years ago. God is patient and long suffering and we thank Him for that.

Get in the Word of God. You might be already back at work, but take some time out to get in the Word of God. It will make you a better person. Reading His Word will make you more creative because He is the creator. I know that God can do exceedingly and above all that you could ever ask or think. If it concerns you, know that it concerns God. Take your concerns to the Lord.

We Can Help Each Other

At the writing of this blog, Americans might not get a second round of stimulus checks. We have been through two major hurricanes back to back and now we have forest fires raging in California, Oregon and Washington. It is time to pray like no other time. We still have the coronavirus that have taken friends, loved ones, colleagues, church members, etc. I don't care if you are not a religious person, but a high school student knows it's time to pray.

We have millions of Americans on unemployment. We have millions of people behind on their rent and mortgages. Some people have already been evicted and some are waiting for relief from the government which might not come. It's time to huddle and bounce some things off of each other. If people are going to church when the doors open, they are looking for answers. They need financial workshops. They need home loan modification information. They need the prayer of favor and faith. They don't have time for games. They ain't trying to hate on nobody. They are looking for relief.

Many of them did what they were suppose to do. They were good stewards of their money. Many still are tithers, and I will tell that you can tithe and still have to go through some things because God is using you for a testimony.

About 20 years ago, I was a new teacher. I had just left television because of the call to teach. I had purchased a house maybe three years prior. I had a nice vehicle, and I had written my first book, GLORY...THE HAIR. A friend of mine introduced me to someone. I thought he could be a potential mate, but because I was living a saved lifestyle and celibate, it became a business partnership because I wasn't giving it up.

I had the spirit that if I am starting a business I'm going all in doing whatever it takes and making sacrifices. Everyone doesn't think that way. I will tell the single women to take care of yourself and your children. If they ain't going all in, don't you go all in either. I'm married now, but at the time I wasn't married.

Anyway, we started a non-profit foundation, and it was a good idea. It was hard at first to get people to give. So, we gave to it ourselves until we started getting grant money and started doing plays to fund the foundation. Grant money did come in. It lasted for about 7 years, and then we folded it.

During this time, I got behind on my mortgage primarily because I was teaching and then a year later became a substitute teacher and was finishing up my certification to teach. My home got annexed into the city. So, I now had city taxes. Just figure out the rest. I was managing and paying the mortgage even after the salary decrease. Ask me how? I was paying my tithes. It took several months for the foreclosure proceedings to play out in court. I mean, it took so long I wasn't even sure if they were going to foreclose.

I had already put a deposit on an apartment and had some cash squared away to pay for moving expenses. By this time, I was back in a regular teaching job. The bank took a long time to foreclose. I had cheated foreclosure at least three times before. One time I took out a loan from a local bank. The second time my Mom gave me the money. The third time I borrowed from an aunt. This time, I was out of options and came to grips with the fact that I could get another house in a few years. I even tried to sell this house, but probably should have tried different realtors.

I share my background because people are not always impressed if you have not been where they have been and sat where they have sat. It's easy to tell people to do this and to do that. If you have been through what you are telling people, you have a much more captive audience. I knew the house was getting ready to foreclose because some strange man showed up and started mowing my lawn. This went on for a few weeks. One day, while I was at school teaching, my Mom called me and told me they had foreclosed on my house. I asked her how did she know; she said that they looked on my caller id and called her. I told my principal that I had to leave school because of an emergency.

I called movers and moved my belongings. I stayed at her place for like 2 days until my apartment was ready and then moved into my new downtown apartment. I said if I had to go back to an apartment, I might as well be downtown. I handled my affairs differently and was able to purchase another property about 2 to 3 years later.

I know my situation might not be like yours. Take care of yourself. Save up for yourself. Don't let people nickel and dime you to death. If you can help others and you can do it from a place of strength, do it, but don't let people play on your kindness if they are not sincere. Use some common sense. Sometimes common sense escaped me, but I try to stay woke as much as possible now. If you are in an eviction situation, try to find help. If it's a mortgage, most of them will work out a loan modification. If it's an apartment and the landlord is not working with you, someone else will be glad to have a new tenant. If those around you are not talking rationally, find someone who is. I have always tried to have a job. When I was younger, sometimes I had two. I have never been the type that spent my time trying to get over on people, especially with housing or rent.

We are in a different time. People who never thought they would be in this situation are in this situation. Even when I went through my foreclosure, I tried not to be down on myself. I knew the stats. I had been in television news and knew that Memphis was number in the nation for bankruptcy filings in the late 90s. I wasn't sure what the foreclosure rate was. I was not trying to do bankruptcy to save that house because there were too many others out there like it or better.

OUR VOICES

It's time to let our voices be heard. I have learned so much during this Coronavirus pandemic. I am grateful for healthcare. I am thankful to be a teacher and still get paid while teaching virtually from home. A lot of the training that took place years ago is coming in handy. I am thankful to be married and have a husband who is working. We have both experienced shortage before.

However, I can sympathize with the millions of Americans who have filed unemployment and are waiting for it to continue. At least you received $600 plus what the state pays. In Tennessee, that's $275 a week. Child, please. Many people only had what the state paid and still had to pay their bills. I have experienced that. By the time I got the unemployment; it was time to go back to work. You must not give up. I am a witness that even though you are on unemployment and don't feel that you are able to tithe off of it. Give 10% to the church. I promise you, God will make up the rest and it will amaze you.

I have that radical faith. Sometimes, I have given my last dime to the church and then sold a few items at the record shop or bookstore just to have gas money. I did this because I wanted to sow a seed on the Word. I was a lot younger then and would not try that now. I didn't run out of gas. God always touched the hearts of those who I encountered, and they just wanted to help.

Some of you are going to go to better jobs. Some will get promoted when you return to your job. I realize that many people were very well planned and never went without a paycheck. I think God wants us to be more sympathetic to all people and not turn our noses up at anyone. I don't care how wealthy you are, this pandemic is affecting you. It may not be affecting you financially, but it's probably affecting you mentally, socially, and perhaps spiritually. Some, it has affected your health or someone you know or work with.

Many business owners survived the first wave, but didn't survive the second. Many people found this to be the perfect opportunity to go into business or to take their current business to the next level. The Bible says, "All things work together for good, to them who love and serve the Lord and who are the called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28).

I thank God that I am a writer. Writers are used to being alone. Writers get caught up in their character's lives. Writers can manage. However, many writers are also social butterflies and live for the excitement of the day and the interaction with people.

Get on a schedule. Exercise, meditate, organize. Some people needed rest because they were performing at a high level. I look back over my life and I still to this day don't know how I did as much as I did when I was younger. When I was in television, my shift was 10 hours. Many times, I gladly worked 13 to 14 hours just to get the overtime or to be seen during the day. I worked overnights at the time. I still found time to go to church, work in the church, teach an adult to read, and sit on two boards of directors and was President of those two boards at various times.

After leaving television, I taught. At one point, I was teaching school, running a non-profit foundation with a friend of mine, working on my Master's and trying to promote a book. Wrote a play. I still don't see how I did all that I did. God gives you the energy for where you are at a particular time in life.

Rest up. Stay prayed up and let's see what the future holds for us both.

#Black Lives Matter

Change is coming to America. The death of George Floyd has opened the eyes of White America and others in America of what our people (African-Americans) experience daily. Derek Chauvin was shown on video putting his knee on Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. Mr. Floyd died because of this. What is also disturbing is the fact that three other police officers allowed their colleague to carry on in such a manner. Thank God for technology and the cell phone. If this had not been recorded, Chauvin might have gotten away with murder.

Floyd's life has not been the only one that has been taken away by police brutality. Others have fallen at the hands of reckless police officers. We know that there are many police officers who take their job and authority seriously and who have the best interest for the public that they serve. The conversation in this hour is about those who abuse their power. This abuse of power is exposing the covert racism that exists in America. I believe that change is coming.

God is not a respecter of persons. He forced Pharaoh to release the children of Israel after 400 years of bondage. Read the book of Exodus or buy the DVD for The Ten Commandments. Unless you are a black man in America, you can not truly understand what oppression looks like. Yes, as black women we may go only so far, but efforts are continuous to keep the African-American male down.

Derek Chauvin's knee on George Floyd's neck was symbolic in two ways. It is symbolic because America has used racism to hold the black man down. It is also symbolic because the devil primarily uses all of his arsenal to keep the people of God down. All the devil's tricks are to cause oppression whether it is spiritual, physical, financial, psychological, clinical, or relational. History will recall that many times African-Americans are asked or recommended to have surgeries that are unnecessary. Many times there was sterilization. Sometimes, our people were test subjects.

Some think it's all an enormous game and that perhaps we are uninformed. Understand that judgment begins in the house of God. Judgment is perhaps coming to America for the ills of generations of keeping people in bondage. Get your hearts right. You do right. The people who implemented slavery have already faced the Judge. One day we will all stand before a Holy and Righteous God. Who shall be able to stand?

CASH STRAPPED AMERICA

I have often said on my time here on earth that I have never seen such-and-such. We are now tapering down; I hope with a pandemic. This after the United States and families across the world have suffered many casualties. I am sure many would give all that they have to reclaim loved ones, friends, and colleagues. While people are dying, some people are financially strapped because some have been off the job because of stay at home orders. America and the world are under demonic attack. Some say it is the fault of China. I believe it's some truth to that because people in the know are saying it. Others don't know what to think. No matter whom is at fault, it is time to pray. It is time to pray as if our very survival depends on it. Health officials say we could go through the same thing again next year.

I really don't know if I am up for that. I am sure we as humans can weather many things, but there have been so many deaths and I just don't want a round two. People are also talking about the new normal. What does that look like? Does that mean for a period I will work from home? Does that mean I will always have to wear a mask when leaving my home for essentials?

While people are burying loved loves, working from home and trying not to catch the virus, other things are going on? The United States has been delivering checks into the hands of Americans. While Americans are getting checks, industries are getting bailouts. Small business owners are getting Paycheck Protection programs and millions of Americans are on unemployment. Many have never been on unemployment in their lives. Most of us did what we were supposed to do. We got educated, got a job, had a career and stashed some cash for a rainy day. Only it's not a rainy day, it's a flood. Many of us didn't stash cash and were already living paycheck to paycheck.

To solve all of our woes and problems, we only need to do one thing. "If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, I will forgive their sin, and will heal their the land." This is from II Chronicles 7:14. This is a call to turn to Christ. This is a call to stop the sin that America and the world have put on a rubber stamp and this is a turning back to God. Many people have made other things their gods. Who knows why God has allowed what is happening? We find comfort in what the Word of God says, and it is this, "All things work together for good to them who love the Lord and are the called according to His purpose." This is from Romans 8:28.

You might say. I know many people who are saved that died from the virus. If they were saved, then you need to rejoice that they left here in a saved state and entered Heaven. About 40 percent of the world is of the Christian faith. Another 25 to 30 percent are Muslim and then you have Hindu, Buddhists and other religions.The Global Religious Landscape

You might say, "I need help now. If God will help me, He should have showed up two weeks ago or yesterday." Most of us will take God's help whenever He shows up, but you acknowledge that you need His help and that you want His help. Some people are too proud to do that.

What if I don't know how to pray, then what? The Bible says, "Pray in this manner: Our Father which art in Heaven..." The Lord's Prayer. Go to the Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6:15. I pray that God will meet your needs. I pray that He will surround you with people who care about you and provide sound advice. God instructs us to seek wisdom because it is the principal thing. Read the book of Proverbs in the Bible for more wisdom. Sometimes people give out bad advice not knowing that they are sowing bad seeds to receive bad advice. Advise people in the best way that you can and if you don't know, just say so.

What Is God Saying?

No matter where you are in the world, the coronavirus has affected you. You have probably been told to stay home to stop the spread of this virus. For our generation, this is unusual. I usually am at work during the day teaching my class in English Language Arts. Now, we are working remotely because of the threat. I can tell that my students want more interactions. All of my students don't have access to technology. Some are strictly working from their cellphones.

Many of us wonder what the future holds. Is this going to be business as usual as we move forward? Will we have to pause our lives every time a virus shows up? I don't know. Now is a good time to become a Christian. Even if you are not a Christian, admit that something strange is going on. One well-known atheist has gotten on television and talked about how he is not a Christian and not afraid of going to hell. Please don't tempt the Lord thy God (Matthew 4:7). I would challenge you to investigate faith. If you are not a Christian, try your god to see if it shows up. Once you don't get a response, try Jesus.

I believe that God is trying to speak to us. Many times when I have felt most connected to God, I was alone. A lot of us are away from day to day work. We can get closer to God. We don't have to have the television on 24-7 or have radio and movies on. Sometimes, we can just pray and ask God to speak to us. What are we supposed to learn out of what's happening, or is God preparing us for future calamities?

A New Year and a New Season

I am excited about the year 2020. I believe that God has exciting things that He is trying to share with the people of God. I believe that God wants us to hear from Him. I pray that you will get in position to hear from God and that all of the distractions and hindrances will be removed. It is a shame that sometimes people will tend to get in the way. Even those who are aware that God has a purpose and a plan for all of His people. However, I serve a God who is not insecure and can meet everyone's needs. All you have to do is ask Him. Come to God with a pure heart and no hidden agenda and watch Him change things for you.

This year I am preparing to take the limits off of God. Sometimes, we have our little paths cut out for ourselves and they are not nearly as large as what God has for us. I am expecting big things this year and I am taking the limits off my mind so that God can use me. I am striving to be more disciplined and do the things that God would have me to do. I realize that some people like to be a hindrance. I am not even worried about them. I have turned them over to God. The Word of God declares that I know the plans that I have for you says the Lord, plans of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11).

I believe that big things are coming our way. I also believe that God wants us to witness to others so that they may be saved. It's time to get all of your family members and friends saved. It does not matter how old they are. It is time to get serious about God and His business. With intensity increasing, it is a sign to us that the enemy is panicking and trying to put the squeeze on the people of God. Please increase your prayer time with the Lord. Try not to leave your house each morning without covering yourself and your family in prayer. If all you can do is read or recite Psalms 91 and say "Father, cover my family and friends as I head out to work," do that.

I pray that God will go before you and make the crooked places straight, break into pieces the gates of brass, cut in sunder the bars of iron and give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that He is the Lord (Isaiah 45:2-3).

A Season of Gratefulness

With the Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa season upon us and many just celebrating Thanksgiving, it is a season to be grateful. Across various social media posts, I also see that many are making their transition from this life to the next. The holiday season is a time to spend with family and friends, but for many it is a somber time. Those who have lost relatives who are no longer with them are at times sad. It is indeed a time to be grateful if you are not experiencing these types of losses. However, God wants us to also be grateful and give thanks when times are not as we would like them to be.

You often times have to reach within yourself to be grateful in the midst of tragedy. You can be a beacon of light to those around you by spreading good cheer. The Bible declares that in everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

How does one get to happy when you are alone and maybe depressed? Think on the good things that God has already done. Watch some comedy on television. Go outside and get some sunshine. Think about things that are going right compared to what could go wrong. Go shopping and buy yourself something. Get a makeover. Go workout. You would be amazed at what exercising can do for you. Keep a journal. Just releasing things off your mind that you don't want to share with others is powerful. Thank God for the people He entrusted you with and be thankful that they have received their reward.

I have lost some relatives and friends along this walk called life. Sometimes, I have spoken to people who were not trying to stay here. I think they had gotten a glimpse of Heaven and were excited that their suffering was coming to an end. I think that I have a good prayer life. However when a person has decided that they want to go home to be with the Lord, there is not too much that you and I can do.

Next steps, get right with the Lord. Get in the Word of God. Encourage others. Do the work of an Evangelist or whatever God has called you to do. Get in a good Bible based church where people are getting saved, the Word of God is going forth, the Pastor is not afraid to speak out against sin, there is a strong distinction between right and wrong, and the Spirit of God is working in that place.

What is Your Purpose?

Now is the time to walk in your purpose. So many times we go through the routine of this walk called life. We get up. We eat breakfast, go to Starbucks, go to work, and then to the gym. Some of us have to take kids to school and pick them up. Some of us have to drop kids off at basketball or soccer practice, etc. We go to church on Sunday, choir rehearsal on Wednesday, Bible Study on Thursday or whatever day we attend. Then, we start the routine all over again. Wouldn't it be nice to know that within the course of a day or a week or a year, you are fulfilling the purpose that God has designed for you?

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). I believe that every human being has a purpose. I will speak from the Christian perspective because that is the faith that I believe and can witness to. Every since I was a child, I wanted to be on television. I would sit in the yard with my newspaper in hand. After playing newswoman for awhile, I would take out my sack lunch and eat it. My desk was an upside down cardboard box. I thought that's what people in the news did. I kept the fire burning in high school and did everything that was available to me to aid in my becoming a news reporter. I took typing for two years because I knew that I had to type to be a reporter. I think we had a school newspaper and I may have written an article or two for it.

When I attended college, I came in with a declared major of broadcast journalism and did not change it. I worked part-time in the office of the Dean of the Department of Journalism. I worked at the school radio station trying to get that experience to add to my resume. I also was a member of the yearbook staff. I may have pinned and article or two for the school newspaper. When the call came in to the Department of Journalism from a News Director looking for an assignments editor, I asked the Dean if we had to post it. He said, "yes." I told him this is my job. He says "How are you going to work here and there and go to school." I told him that I could do it. We posted the job. I applied for the job and got the part-time job. It was a struggle to work two jobs, go to school and try to be President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. I knew that journalism jobs were rare at times. Anyway, God did allow me to remain in broadcast journalism with radio, magazine and newspaper experience along the way for about 13 years. After I finished doing what I wanted to do or what He allowed me to do, He asked me to "Teach the Children." Even before He asked me this, I had attempted to volunteer with a local youth organization and was turned down as a volunteer. Who turns down volunteers anyway? I just knew I needed to be doing something more. Understand that I was already a member of the church. I was going to Sunday School. I had been in the choir until the Pastor placed me in the sound room. I attended Tuesday night Bible Study. I was working all over the place, but God wanted me in one area. I appreciate that.

After talking with my Pastor at the time and receiving instructions on how to hear from God, I heard God speak audibly. Don't let people tell you that God doesn't speak audibly. He speaks to people in different ways and through different means especially his Word. He said "Sandra Hamer" "Sandra Hamer," Teach the children. I was asleep when He called me. I knew it was God. Who else could it be? For God speaketh once, and twice man perceiveth it not. Job 33:14 Here is the link where God speaks

He showed me pictures in vivid color of children of all nationalities. The next day someone who I use to work for in college called the television station to get my phone number. They gave me his number. He asked me if I would volunteer to be on their board of directors for a children's after-school program. I volunteered on the board. Later, I ran the summer camp for a year or two. After I left the station which was orchestrated by God, I decided to finish my book and then teach. A lot of other stuff went on in the middle like helping to start Young Filmmakers Foundation of Memphis. I also taught Sunday School for awhile. Understand that people will fight you when you attempt to do God's will, but you just need a willing heart and a spirit of obedience. We pray that wherever you are placed in a church the Pastor gets on program and releases you to where God wants you to be. If he doesn't, don't worry about it. You probably need to learn more of the Word and be more committed. You must not get discouraged. You might get moved somewhere else, but God's plan for your life will prevail. Some churches have a lot of talent and everybody can't do everything. There are just so many gifted people, but your gift will make room for you somewhere (Proverbs 18:16). "And He gave some apostles; some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers," Ephesians 4:11 Gifting of the Church.

I thank God for those who were a part of the plan in ushering me where I needed to be. I have had conversations with bosses who I know were following instructions from the Master. God has a master plan for you. Get in prayer and build a relationship with Him and watch God work. The Bible says, I know the plans that I have for you, plans of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end (Jeremiah 29:11). I pray that God will walk with you as you walk with Him.

Finding A Good Church Home

I was recently talking with a young lady at work. I actually overheard her talking with someone about why she hadn't joined a church. She was recent without a Pastor since that one had passed. Since I know her, I asked what church was she attending. She told me the name of the church which I was familiar with. She said it was too big. I asked how many members. She said about 500. Since I attend a megachurch, I didn't think that was too big. She said that she had a relative that goes there, but she was still scared to join.

I didn't ask her why she was scared to join because I know other single women who sort of bounce from church to church or don't go to church at all. A lot of people are at the point where they want to go in, get a word and go home. They don't want to get to know people in the church because they fear how they may be treated and it is just safe not to be in a clique. I know from whence I speak having been single for a long time and now married. I thank God for being married because I have a covering. Some of the things that people try with single people, they are not going to try with married people. There are married women who attend church and their husband does not and at times they are privy to church politics. However, I would assume that people respect them.

When I was single, I grew up in a church where my grandmother was a member. Later, My Uncle Willie Lee took us to church and it was safe. The Pastor was respectful and that's where I stayed until I graduated from high school and came to college. Sometimes we visited other churches for programs and I felt respected. In college, I started out going to the Baptist Student Union which was cool, but I wanted to attend a church. I went to Prescott Baptist across the street and that was not really where I wanted to be. It was small, but I needed something more. Then, I went to Olivet Baptist right down the street from the University of Memphis and stayed there until I was directed to go to Temple of Deliverance and that's where I am now.

In my 54 years, I have seen and experienced a lot which I will not disclose here. Some people have cool or cordial relationships with their Pastors and they don't mind getting the relationship hookup, but for the majority of people, that's something that they want to do on their own. Pastors need to respect that because the Bible says "And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them." (Exodus 2:25) A lot of people stay at home and watch a TV ministry or online. I did that for about a year as an adult and didn't miss a beat. I sent my tithes in and everything was cool. I believed that if Jesus came back at that time I would have gone with Him as well. Of course, I told her that my church was cool, but she says that the church is too big. I pray that God will lead her and others where to join. Sometimes people sit at a church for a few years until they feel comfortable.
