Oh dear, I see some tired old Victorian theory about criminality being hereditary and determined by bumps on the head etc, has been dredged up and dressed in 21st century "genetic theory" to make it more plausible.

A University of Texas study recently published in the Criminology journal claims that, although there is no single gene which causes criminal behaviour, there are "probably" a wide range which play a small part in raising or lowering our chances of offending.

Dr J.C. Barnes, one of the co-authors, claims that there are thousands of genes that will incrementally (1%) increase the likelihood of being involved in a crime.

The trouble with research such as this is that, although scientists usually can grasp how probabilities and risk factors work and how significant or not they really are, politicians and the media know fark all about them and immediately work on the premise that an increase in risk/probability means "definitely will occur".

Cue calls by dog whistle politicians and the shouty media for a massive DNA database!

The Joy of Fry Ups

Wonderful news everyone!

The British Medical Journal has decreed that fry ups are no longer bad for you.

Hoozah!!

It appears that the health issue (if there really is one) lies not with the constituents of fry ups, but the oil in which they are fried.

A study published in the BMJ found no association between the frequency of fried food consumption in Spain - where olive and sunflower oils are mostly used - and the incidence of serious heart disease.

Needless to say the British Heart Foundation had a mild seizure over this, and has warned us not to reach for the frying pans "yet".

Well they would say that wouldn't they?

Professor Michael Leitzmann of the University of Regensburg in Germany said

"Taken together, the myth that frying food is generally bad for the heart is not supported by available evidence."

As I have stated many times before on this site, the body is a like a car engine it needs oil in it in order to ensure that the blood flows smoothly through the veins;)

As ever with food and drink, so long as you eat and drink a variety of foods/drinks then a blow out every once in while will not do you any harm. It is the constant haranguing by Nanny and the "health" industry that raises the blood pressure and stress levels, not the occasional fry up!

For why?

"Rolling Back The Frontiers of The State" - Not!

Oh dear I see that our "Roll Back The Frontiers of The State" government has decided to award local authorities extra funds if they can demonstrate that they have improved our health by tackling air pollution, domestic violence and truancy etc.

Andrew Lansley, Nanny's Health Secretary, will announce that data on over 60 factors that influence health will be collected.

Councils will be expected to boost rates of breastfeeding, tackle school attendance, homelessness, tooth decay and the numbers of young people in the criminal justice system etc.

Lansley is of the view:

“We all want to be healthy. No one wants an unhealthy existence. And the job of the Government – and my responsibility – is to help people live healthier lives."

The question, whenever Nanny is involved, is when does "helping" become "enforcing"?

Anyhoo, rest assured this plan will go tits up:

1 Councils will manipulate data to ensure they win more money.

2 It will be used as an excuse by councils to intrude ever more into our lives, and to collect more information about us.

3 It will cost more than it saves.

4 It will be used by councils to promote whatever "harebrained scheme" single issue agendas they have.

In short, it will benefit us not one jot!

Abstinence Makes The Heart Grow Fonder

Ugh I see that the cretinous element of the Tory party (ie Nadine Dorries) is seeking to involve the state in the sex lives of teenagers.

Dorries has proposed a bill that would require schools to offer girls between the ages of 13 and 16 lessons on the "benefits of abstinence" from sex.

Dorries herself though seems happy enough to not abstain from sex with family friends (In January 2011, Dorries stated that, since December 2010, she had been in a relationship with John Butler, a married man who had been a family friend for 13 years previously and whom, she claimed, had separated from his wife shortly before.)

Here's why her bill is bollocks:

1 MPs are the last people on the planet who should lecture others about morals and sex.

2 Should not boys also be given these lessons? Why are only girls being targeted?

3 Telling a teenager to abstain form sex is as productive as trying to herd cats. Teenagers are hormonally programmed to bonk. A far better use of time and resources would be to ensure that the teenagers are fully cognisant about contraception, stds and the costs (financial and emotional) of having a baby at a young age.

Moralistic preaching about abstinence will fail, and will turn the teenagers off from listening to relevant advice about contraception etc etc. It will of course also make sex even more exciting, as it will be "forbidden".

Why is this cretinous woman an elected representative for fark's sake?

Educashun - The GCSE In Skydiving

I am glad to see that reports about Nanny's educashun system making exams easier have been proven to be incorrect.

That at least is the conclusion one "might" draw from the fact that Sian Spence (15) is taking the first ever GCSE to include indoor skydiving, after the WJEC exam board agreed to assess her hobby as part of the PE course.

Skydiving will account for 66% of her PE marks.

The exam board is now trying to work out how to asses her.

Hmm, let's see how this all pans out then!

Personally speaking I am in favour of introducing the ancient Chinese civil service exam, whereby candidates were locked in a room for 24 hours with all the paper and ink they needed and were told to write down everything they knew.

Now that's an exam that separates the "men from the boys"!

The Joy Of Vegetables

I am gemused to see that Euro Nanny has chosen to lecture us about our fruit and vegetable eating habits.

Seemingly, if "scientific research" (carried out by the European Food Information Council - EUFIC) is to be believed, the average Brit does not eat enough vegetables. In fact Euro Nanny places us 14th in a league table of 19 vegetable eating EU nations.

Britons eat 258g of fruit and vegetables a day, compared with a European average of 386g.

EUFIC then go on to bemoan the fact that we are placing ourselves at a greater risk of caner, diabetes and all the other modern plagues that Nanny likes to frighten us with.

So, should we be worried?

Errmm..no not at all, for you see EUFIC then go on to admit that there are a few problems with the data that it used for its "research":

1 The definition of fruit and vegetables varies between countries, eg some nations do not include potatoes or fruit juice.

2 EUFIC used data from various governments to compile its report, therefore the data itself cannot be comparable or necessarily reliable.

In other words the "research" is bollocks.

Given the above caveat, why precisely did they bother to conduct the "research" and publish their "findings" in the first place?

Another fine example of Nanny using dodgy "research" to justify her prejudices and policies!

For why?

Their batty plan to replace the "wait for the green man" signs on pelican crossings in Boston, with a "non sexist" sign that asks pedestrian to "cross with the green figure".

Why?

Seemingly the use of the word "man" is deemed to be sexist as it implies male domination over when people can and can't cross the road.

Sigh!!!

Another Cancer Scare Story

I see that some Swedish research (published in the British Journal of Cancer from researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm) has identified that if we eat 50g of processed meat a day (ie one sausage or two rashers of bacon) the chances of us going down with pancreatic cancer increases by 19%.

Eat 150g and the risk increases by 57%.

Cue media deluge of shite, claiming that bacon etc gives you cancer.

However, here's the reality, the average person has a 1% chance of going down with pancreatic cancer. Therefore an increase of 57% raises that risk to around 2%.

I think I will continue eating my sausages and bacon!

Birmingham Council's Greed

I see that our much "respected" councils are continuing to do their bit to screw us for as much money as possible, in order to maintain themselves in the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed.

Birmingham council are trying to scam people with charges (£25-£50) for taking wedding photographs in Birmingham parks:

“You are welcome to use our parks or green open spaces as backdrops for your wedding photographs and/or film recordings of your Wedding day for personal use only, with prior permission from us.

Use service specific Parks form to make your request providing dates, times and the name of the site where you want to take your photographs.

There is a charge of £50 for commercial photographs and £25 for non-commercial photographs.”

Parks are open spaces owned by (we pay council tax for them) and used by the public, they are not the private fiefdoms of local councils!

Councils are the enemies of the people!

Nanny cannot resist poking her bony old nose into the affairs of her minions.

I am sad to say that, despite promises by Cameron et al to reduce the Nanny state, it seems that Tory Nanny is every bit as bad as Labour Nanny.

It has been announced by the health secretary, Andrew Lansley, that Tory Nanny will back the NHS Future Forum's proposal that will compel NHS professionals (such as; midwives, surgeons, health visitors, doctors and nurses) to pro-actively ask patients about their smoking, drinking, diet and physical activity every time they see them.

The intrusive "make every contact count" plan, has divided the profession; the British Medical Association supports it, but the Royal College of Nursing doubts its value.

Ironically Andy Burnham, the shadow health secretary, warned that this might extend the boundaries of the Nanny state!

In simple terms here's why the idea is bollocks:

1 It is intrusive and annoying to be harangued with questions about lifestyle.

2 People will be put off going to see their doctor, if they face a barrage of personal questions.

3 What will the state do with the information collected?

4 People will lie when asked these questions, therefore the answers will have no medical value.

5 The state, once it has crossed the rubicon of asking us about our lifestyles, will use the information to compel us to take treatment for any lifestyle behaviour that it deems to be inappropriate.

Wrt point 5, those of you who think that this is an exaggeration should bear in mind that the rationale for this "initiative" is to reduce the cost of the NHS. Gathering data such as this is of little use in reducing costs, if the patient is not then compelled to address his/her state defined medical "problem".

Nanny Bans Sitting

My commiserations to Eric Carter (a 91 year old ex Spitfire pilot) who ran afoul of Nanny's health and safety rules the other day.

Mr carter was visiting the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Worcestershire, to view a Spitfire that was on show. Still being able bodied he asked if he could sit in it.

Sadly he was denied reliving an old memory.

For why?

The Museum deemed that it was health and safety risk for him to sit in it.

For why?

It seems that, for reasons best known to the museum/council et al, the interior had been painted with paint containing radium!

Errmm..if the paint poses such a health hazard, why did they use it in the first place (at some stage someone will have to enter the cockpit, even if it is just to maintain the interior)?

Booze Matters - Politician Heal Thyself!

I am less than gemused to read that Nanny and our political "elite" are once more having a go at us about our drinking habits.

The House of Commons science and technology committee has got its knickers in a twist over our boozing habits, and wants us to take a couple of days off booze a week.

Fair enough, simply supplement the booze free days with another narcotic!

Additionally, the committee doesn't like the fact that studies have shown there to be a health benefit from drinking; as with any study that Nanny disagrees with, she looks for ways to ignore/discredit it.

Quote:

"The committee found a lack of expert consensus over the health benefits of alcohol and is therefore sceptical about using the purported health benefits of alcohol as a basis for daily guidelines for the adult population, particularly as it is clear that any protective effects would only apply to men over 40 years and post-menopausal women, yet the guidelines apply to all adults."

Andrew Miller, chairman of the committee, said:

"It is vital that they are up to date and that people know how to use them. Unfortunately, public understanding of how to use the guidelines and what an alcohol unit looks like is poor, although improving.

While we urge the UK health departments to re-evaluate the guidelines more thoroughly, the evidence we received suggests that the guidelines should not be increased and that people should be advised to take at least two drink-free days a week."

Well here's the thing folks, our political "elite" are the last people on the planet who should be telling us how much we should eat, drink, smoke or snort.

Their snouts are in the taxpayer subsidised trough on a daily basis:

"The House of Commons catering subsidy has risen to £5.8M, and is equivalent to £8,978 per MP per annum. For every £10 an MP spent on lunch, we contributed £7.60. The year before, we contributed £6.90.

The taxpayer booze subsidy for MPs is 44%.

Where, in the real world, can you buy the following at the price that our political "elite" pay?

A glass of malt whisky, Cointreau liqueur or Grand Marnier costs £2.55. Glasses of 2009 Sauvignon Blanc or 2010 Merlot are £2.35.

Incidentally, MPs can pay for their meals and booze on interest free credit. Try going into your local pub and doing the same!

Hypocritical bastards or what? "

Therefore when an MP suggest that we take a couple of days off from drinking, treat that request with the contempt that it deserves. Politicians should practice what they preach, and heal themselves first.

They should also pay market rates for the booze, food and fags that they consume at our expense!

Prats of The Week - The Scottish Government

Tis the New Year, and therefore time for the first of this year's Prats of The Week Awards.

This week it goes to the Scottish Government.

For why?

For their remarkable largess, in the face of biting austerity, towards a couple of Pandas (Tian Tian and Yang Guang) on loan from China.

The Scottish Government spent £43K on a “welcome party” for the Edinburgh Zoo pandas, previously the Scottish Government had promised that all money would “come from commercial sponsorship and other revenue sources”.

Now don't get me wrong, I love a good party and a good panda as much as the next man. I also appreciate that the pandas will draw in revenue to the city.

However, given that this is a time of austerity and given that the money to be earned from the tourists visiting the pandas will benefit in main the private sector, maybe the private sector should have stumped up all the cash for the welcome party?

Whilst Nanny continues to lecture us about our drinking and eating habits, and threatens to place a minimum price on alcohol, may I draw your attention to the following?

The House of Commons catering subsidy has risen to £5.8M, and is equivalent to £8,978 per MP per annum. For every £10 an MP spent on lunch, we contributed £7.60. The year before, we contributed £6.90.

The taxpayer booze subsidy for MPs is 44%.

Where, in the real world, can you buy the following at the price that our political "elite" pay?

A glass of malt whisky, Cointreau liqueur or Grand Marnier costs £2.55. Glasses of 2009 Sauvignon Blanc or 2010 Merlot are £2.35.

Incidentally, MPs can pay for their meals and booze on interest free credit. Try going into your local pub and doing the same!

Booze Matters - Cameron Speaks

Along with her attempts to change our eating habits, Nanny has not forgotten her longstanding hatred of alcohol.

When I say "hatred of alcohol", I of course don't mean the "refined" sipping of fine wines and designer lagers in cafes and restaurants, but the consumption of "cheaper" types of alcohol offered at a discount by supermarkets (those same supermarkets who are being subsidised by Nanny in her "Supermeals" initiative) and off licences.

Using the Christmas break to relax a little, and contemplate his vision of society over a glass or two of champagne, David Cameron has let it be known that he is unhappy with the current pricing structure in the booze industry.

Cameron has ordered officials to develop a scheme in England to stop the sale of alcohol at below 40p to 50p a unit.

A Whitehall source recently told the media:

"The Prime Minister has decided that when it comes to alcohol, something pretty radical now has to be done and he is keen on the minimum price.

It is complicated how this can be delivered, particularly under European law, but it is clear that the voluntary approach has not worked."

So there you go folks, "voluntary" (ie free market principles) is not in the lexicon of thinking of our political "elite".

Does minimum pricing actually reduce alcohol abuse?

As with all of Nanny's schemes, there is no scientific data that actually stands muster to back up her claims.

I lived and worked in the Nordic region (1996-2000), where alcohol prices were kept artificially high by the state (illegal under EU rules by the way) and where the state had a monopoly on the high street sale of alcohol (also illegal under EU rules).

The result of this nonsense was that people would do their utmost to find cheap booze (eg smuggled from Denmark, or home brewed), and the level of public drunkenness was the same as I have seen in the UK. The difference being that many people would bring their booze in secret into a pub, and sit in the toilet to drink it.

Nice!

All in all this idea won't work, and is in fact illegal under EU rules.

As we ease ourselves into the New Year of 2012, wherein our political "elite" are using the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee to take our minds off the shite that we are in, it is "comforting" to see that some New Year traditions never end.

I refer of course to the media bombardment about diets and detox treatments that we are subjected to during January. Nanny, never one to miss an opportunity to lecture us, has joined the bandwagon by offering 4 million recipe cards to people who apparently are unable to decide for themselves what to eat or how to cook.

The campaign is called...wait for it....."Supermeals"!

Nanny's Department of Health has got its knickers in a twist over the fact that some people choose to eat a sandwich for their evening meal, instead of something that Nanny refers to as a "balanced" meal.

As such, in addition to the 4 million recipe cards, Nanny has teamed up with some supermarkets who have agreed to offer discounts on some fruit, veg and yogurts.

In other words, the taxpayer is now subsidising the advertising budget of certain supermarkets who would have offered these discounts anyway but would normally have had to pay for an advertising campaign to highlight them.

Public Health Minister Anne Milton (who??) trilled:

''The New Year is a good time to think about losing weight. The Supermeals campaign will give us all some great ideas for balanced meals on a budget.''

Not everyone needs or wants to lose wait for fark's sake!

It beggars belief as to how the human race decided on its menus and cooked for itself before Nanny came along!

EU Hoisted on its Own Petard

Almost a month ago I wrote about some major EU Clusterfuckery wrt our EU Overlords decreeing that there is no evidence that water rehydrates you, and threatening legal action (a two year prison sentence no less) against companies that make any such claim.

Well, one month on, and I gemused to read that our EU Overlords have been hoisted on their own petard!

The EU could now be investigated, as its Milk Programme promoted the health benefits of drinking water to children.

Quote:

"You may not have known, but a large part of milk is actually water. So, if you regularly drink milk, you can stay hydrated at the same time.

When people do not get enough water, a condition called ‘dehydration’, they can become tired, irritable and have a hard time concentrating.

Drinking milk can help put the necessary water back into the body, while providing carbohydrates, proteins and other nutrients to give you energy.”

Well, stap my vitals!

Booze Matters - It's Christmas!!

As we gear up for a booze sodden Christmas, it is gemusing to read that a bunch of "health experts" have been pushing the tired old mantra of a minimum price for alcohol.

They recently promulgated their request via a letter in The Daily Telegraph.

"SIR – Today, MPs debate the crucial issue of alcohol taxation. Each year, alcohol causes the admission of over a million people to hospital, is linked to 13,000 new cases of cancer and is associated with one in four deaths among young people aged 15 to 24.

There is a wealth of evidence to show a direct correlation between alcohol affordability and levels of harm. The House of Commons Health Select Committee state: “increasing the price of alcohol is… the most powerful tool at the disposal of a government.” In 2010, alcohol was 44 per cent more affordable than it was in 1980, a trend mirrored by an increase in cases of alcohol-related health problems and social damage.

We urgently need to raise the price of cheap drink. Harmful drinkers and young people are likely to be the most responsive to price increases. In particular, we need to narrow the price gap between alcohol in bars and restaurants with alcohol in supermarkets and off-licences, to make bulk discounts and pocket-money prices a thing of the past.

There is a push towards a minimum price for each unit of alcohol in the devolved nations of the United Kingdom, with the SNP leading the debate in Scotland. This is a simple and effective mechanism for the Scottish Government to control alcohol prices. If the Coalition is not ready for such bold action, MPs must not lose sight of the importance of taxation as a means not only to lower alcohol consumption but also to direct revenue into the public purse.

With alcohol harm costing us an estimated £25 billion each year, MPs must act now."

The letter claims that a minimum price is a “simple and effective mechanism” for tackling alcohol-related deaths and social problems.

That is complete bollocks.

People, if they are determined to get drunk, will employ any method possible to do so (even if it means drinking moonshine, meths or smuggling in cheaper booze from the EU).

Class A drugs are illegal, and expensive, yet people still take drugs!

Have the "experts" not learned that people will do whatever is necessary to circumvent government regulations, if the regulations stand in the way of them getting high/drunk?

Prof Sir Ian Gilmore, a special adviser to the Royal College of Physicians, claims that a 50p minimum price per unit of alcohol could save nearly 10,000 lives a year.

How the hell can he validate that figure?

We are each destined to die at some stage, how we choose to kill ourselves (eg via eating, drinking, smoking, drugs etc) is surely up to us and not a matter for Nanny to regulate?

Those in the medical profession are the most prone in society to partake in excessive, smoking, drinking, drug taking etc.

It is not for them to dictate to the rest of us how we should live!
