One of the remarkably strong fundamentals that Facebook was built upon is how much people (well, most of them, if not all) like sharing their personal life with the people around them. This led to the age of a hugely interconnected world with "one graph to rule'em all" - the Social Graph, a term coined by Mark Zuckerberg which means "the global mapping of everybody and how they're related".

On Facebook, people share their state of mind, likes and dislikes, photos of cherished moments of their lives, who they befriend etc.

Apparently, Facebook has a great treasure-trove in the form of private data of it's users which makes it better positioned for targeted advertising as opposed to the rival Google. At this juncture, what Facebook strives to achieve is greater user satisfaction at every aspect. As users evolve, they demand better controls.

As a step in this direction, Facebook now allows its users to download their data posted on their Facebook profiles. You can now download everything from your profile such as wall posts, messages, friend lists and photos etc. in a zip file.

The whole process is very simple. Here's how to do this:

Login to your Facebook account.
At the top right hand corner, click on "Account".
Click on "Account Settings".
Under "Settings" tab you will see "Download Your Information", next to which is "learn more", click on that.
You would land up on a page where you need to authenticate yourself. Enter your password, if prompted.
To prevent any potential misuse, Facebook sends the data download link via email to your designated email address. If you're not on the computer that you usually use, you may need to go through the verification process of solving friend photo captcha or SMS captcha on your mobile phone.

eBook readers have witnessed a steep rise lately. The likes of Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook etc. have emerged in a big way.

However I personally feel, when it comes to getting your daily dose of news bits, ePapers have a long way to go before they could completely replace the old-school newspapers. After all, what could be better than having a crisp newspaper in one hand and a nice cup of hot coffee in the other.

Somehow, I've always liked spending some moments of my Sundays with Lounge, "a weekend magazine of business newspaper Mint, that looks at life beyond work; its sections include travel, books, culture, style, play, insider, parenting etc." In a nutshell, a perfect getaway after a busy work week. Now that I am staying at a place where Lounge is not available (demand-supply equation in action), I decided to settle on their ePaper to see what they had to offer on their website.

In the age of social networks, making friends is pretty fast and easy. Although the idea of ever-increasing number of friends on social networks has been questioned. According to Robin Dunbar, a British Anthropologist, the human brain can't keep a track of huge friend lists (a commonality in today's era of social networking). As a matter of fact, our brain can manage to befriend mere 150 persons, no matter how sociable one happens to be. Due to such a nature of human brain, you must have felt a need for having some control over "whom you are comfortable being a friend with".

Now you can drag and drop the names of your friends from the original list of friends to the box above.

Java is in news for a very unlikely reason as reported by Mashable.

The reason is a movie (at least, that's what they are calling it) is being promoted with a nicely-shot, funny trailer titled 'Java 4-ever'.

The video is a nerd comedy on software developing platforms like Java and .NET.

The video is more like a spoof as the characters have some suggestive names such as William Windows, Mona Lisa Harddrive, Lenny Linux etc.

Caution : The video is a little suggestive in the later half, where the content may be inappropriate for children or family viewing.

Facebook comments get a 'Like' button

Facebook, the second most-trafficked site on the Internet, seems to be all set to 'Like' the whole web. In the middle of an ever-increasing hue and cry about the privacy issues, Facebook keeps evolving itself with new features and changes time and again.

Facebook has recently released a new feature, another 'Like' button for comments. Up until yesterday, you could only like posts, links, photos, videos etc. and comment on those. However, now you can 'Like' comments made on other's posts.

This features is reportedly being introduced to increase the user interaction, which is the very essence of modern social networking sites.

People are using it extensively which indicates a positive reaction towards this feature from user's end.

Access Facebook on Your Mobile Devices for Free

Facebook, the popular social networking site with a whopping 400 million user base worldwide, can now be accessed on your mobile devices for free. This was announced by Sid Murlidhar, programme manager for Facebook Mobile, in a blog.

Facebook can be accessed with zero data charges in 45 countries, including India. This is available on select mobile networks for now. In India Reliance Communications and Videocon mobile subscibers can use Facebook for free on their net-enabled phones.

In order to use this free service users would need to go to 'o.facebook.com' on their mobile devices. This new site is optimized for speed and would have pretty much all the features that are available on 'm.facebook.com'. You can update user status, receive and reply to messages, among other features. Although users would be charged for viewing photos and surfing other websites.

This is evidently a smart move considering the fact that Facebook has over 100 million users who visit the site from their mobile phones and it can boost Facebook's presence in the price-conscious third world user base.

The new site is being launched in Brazil, Denmark, Turkey, India, Hong Kong, Finland, Hungary, Sri Lanka and Greece, among others.

We all keep looking for desktop-wallpapers to enhance the visual appeal of our computer screens. The quest for wallpapers is so widespread, that the term "wallpapers" is dubbed one of "the web's most dangerous search terms" (PDF) by McAfee, Inc.

The aforementioned finding is a great indication of the fact how much we love to get jazzy wallpapers for our computing gears. And, for that matter, the term has caught the attention of the cyberpunks.

Pressing F1 on Your Keyboard? Think Again!

You must have seen how a mysterious computer virus makes the hard drives explode in fractions of seconds in Bruce Willis-starrer 2007 action film Die Hard 4.

Well, not so dramatic, but an interesting hacking attack has recently surfaced as reported by Microsoft.

Microsoft has issued a warning of an exploit that causes the computers running Windows XP and Internet Explorer to become infected with malware just with a keystroke: specifically the F1 button.

So here's what actually happens: A flawed implementation of Windows Help and Visual Basic in Internet Explorer creates a potential loophole which lets a hacker to code a dialog box and run any malicious code.

This actually means that the hacker can install any program on your computer, more likely a virus or malware.

"F1" is quite handy in Windows environment when it comes to basic help topics. Just by pressing this key, you can get the basic help about almost any application running in Windows.

Actually, such an attack can be carried out only if there is an interaction with the user. So there has to be a "push of button" in order to carry out the hack-attack.

Microsoft has warned the users to not press F1 while browsing until a patch is released to contain the flaw.

So simply put, browse your way without asking for help!

As 2009 passes by, the talk of what was hot and what was not becomes omnipresent. Ushering into the new year, we look forward to new possibilities in the world of technology. The world markets start bouncing back following a huge meltdown.

Optimism is the need of the hour.

1. Social Networking touches new heights:

The pool of Facebook users has more than doubled in less than a year; from 150 million worldwide users in January 2009 to an astonishing 350 million people before the end of the year. How to Google Effectively

If it were to be said that internet starts with Google, it wouldn't be wrong.

Google is the most used search engine in the world and its website, the most visited.

Google's penetration in everyday life is so gigantic that the word Google has been officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary as a verb (to google: using Google search engine to obtain information on the web).

Human beings are fast becoming infovores. Everyday, a significant amount of time is spent googling.

So here comes a set of tricks about How to google effectively.

>> Phrase search (" ")

If you are looking for a certain phrase, type the exact phrase in quotes (" ") in the Google search bar for desired results.

For example: If you search for the term John Kennedy, webpages with term John Fitzgerald Jack Kennedy will also appear among the search results. This can be bypassed by typing "John Kennedy" (query in quotes).

>> Excluding certain terms (-)

Should you wish to exclude a certain word in search results, put a minus sign (-) immediately before the word that you want to exclude.

>> Searching exactly as is (+)

Sometimes Google's algorithms act a little too smart and automatically displays the synonym of the word that you searched for in search results. If you want to bypass that and want the exact same words to appear in the search results, just add a plus sign (+) immediately before the words.

>> Searching within a site

Sometimes, you may have to search for a certain keyword within a website.
In order to do so, just type the keyword followed by site:example.com

For example: searching the word funny clip on YouTube.

Type funny clip site:youtube.com in the search bar.

>> Definition of a word

You can view the definitions of a word by typing define: word.

for example: for viewing the definition of the word technology

Type define:technology

>> Cinema search: movie location, schedule etc.

For searching movies in your locality,

Type movie:your location

For example, type movie:Los Angeles or movie:Paris or movie:Mumbai accordingly.

>> Searching for a certain filetype:

If you want to narrow down your search to a certain filetype, type the keyword followed by filetype:type of the file (such as .pdf, .xls etc.)

For example, searching all the pdf documents containing the word technology
type technology filetype:pdf

>> Searching a Cached page:

Google keeps a cache of all the indexed pages on its servers. It can be used as a free proxy.

If your company has blocked a certain website, you can take a peek by checking out Google's cache of the website.

You can search for cached pages by typing cache:example.com

For example cache:google.com will show the cached pages of Google's website.

>> Similarly Google can perform mathematical calculations (type any expression such as 2*2, 9+6 etc. in search bar), conversions (kilograms to pounds) etc.

If you don't want to remember these commands, you can easily find many such features in the "Advanced Search" option right next to the search bar.

How to Download Flash Games to your Computer

Internet is flooded with interesting games and we can play a number of

games on internet for free. But there are times when we can't access internet (or are not allowed to :-) ).

Here's a quick and straight-forward guide for downloading Flash-based games on your own computer so that you can simply play them when offline (or with limited access).

Note: As Internet Explorer is widely used, so the given instructions cover IE. Although pretty much the same instruction - set can be used for other browsers with slight modifications. Also make sure that you don't clear cache or close the browser before saving the game on your computer hard-drive.

First let the game load on the browser completely.

Once the game is loaded, Go to Tools menu and select Internet Options.

In General tab, Click Settings button under Temporary Internet Files group.

Click View Files which opens the Temporary Internet Files Folder.

Click View - Details and Click View - Arrange Icons By - Internet Address. According to the webpage, you can sort the .swf (Shockwave Flash Object) files.

After finding the right flash file you can simply right click and copy the file and then save it in a different folder on your computer.

If you are using Windows Internet Explorer 7 or 8, you may click here to find the instructions for viewing Temporary Internet Files.

So download your favourite games and go gaming!

Bing : Web Search Redefined

Bing is a new search engine released by Microsoft Corporation.

Google and Yahoo have been leading the web search business for quite a long time.

Bing, dubbed "the decision engine" is a polished, more Google-like approach towards web search which eventually replaces Microsoft's own MSN search engine.

It is being termed more Google-like here because of its layout and search experience. Why would Microsoft step into Google's shoes inspite of being arch-rivals?

There is a reason!

Google has been the top player in search based business, essentially because unlike Yahoo! (another major search engine), Google's phylosophy is to keep web search results free from flashy, distracting multimedia ads which make the user uncomfortable.

This is a winning strategy. It is evident with the fact that when it comes to search based business, Google leads the pack. So Bing's adopting Google's strategy is not a bad idea!

Although, Bing tends to be polished and more interactive than Google search.

Some new feature in Bing are:

Bing's homepage has a background image which is regularly updated.

Snippets of the page content can be seen just by placing the cursor on a small arrow right next to each search result.

Bing is betting big on improved local search business. Searching for a coffee shop just got easier!

While searching for videos in Bing, even a small preview of the video can be watched by placing the cursor on video result. So it's not necessary to go to the video site in order to decide whether or not you should watch the video.

An interesting feature is VISUAL SEARCH (Beta) powered by Silverlight. It lets you search for something with pictures. For example you can search for laptop with given pictures. One can narrow down on the search results with given filters.

Bing is all good. However in order to compete with Google, it has a long way to go.

Suffering from 3D Headache? Here's How to Avoid it.

"AVATAR" is the rage of the day and 3D headaches are being heard of prevalently. Many get headaches after watching a 3D movie. Like most of us do, so did I while watching AVATAR in 3D. 3D headaches may be minor or otherwise. But why suffer in vein when there is a way of getting away with that.

First, we get headache after watching a movie in 3D because our eyes are accustomed to watching movies in 2D where we can easily see what's going on in the background. Sometimes the storyline demands things in the background to be seen.

3D is a different world altogether. The not-so-important part of the frame is deliberately made out of focus in order to get the viewer best possible 3D experince. Of course, cinematographic techniques have come a long way. A viewer somehow tries to view that "out of focus" part and gets the 3D headache.

So the trick is quite simple.

Just do the obvious. Watch what they want you to watch and cut the crap. For a simple illustration have a look at the image below.

Next time when you'll go for a 3D movie, you will not come home with headache at least. What say!

All about Windows 7

Windows 7, the latest buzz word making headlines in world's technology fields, is finally out following a substantial hype and hoopla.

Many are considering the much-awaited Windows Operating System to be the only significant release after the much-successful Windows XP. The all but maligned Windows Vista being a flop among most of the PC users has substantially damaged the credibility of a pioneering technology bigwig Microsoft.

Windows Vista, when released, faced a lot of heat due to having many issues like slowing down the system and being incompatible with a slew of applications. Since then Microsoft has tried to undo the damage by taking efforts to make it compatible with an increased number of apps by releasing patches and improved Service Packs.

But even after about a decade of its release, Windows XP scores way high than Vista and enjoys the status of being the most widely used operating system in the world with a market share of a whopping 66.2%.

Now Microsoft has eventually come up with a brand new OS which is touted to be an effective weapon for Microsoft to steer ahead of its ever-increasing competition and gain back its sheen.

Experts are considering Microsoft's flagship OS Windows 7 to be a "polishing release of Windows Vista."

Considering the huge popularity of Windows XP among PC users the world over, Microsoft has given Windows 7 a feature that lets the users use their older Windows XP business software right on Windows 7 desktop, simply called "Windows XP mode". It has been designed keeping in mind a large user base of Windows XP and small and medium sized businesses. "Windows XP mode" which can be used only with Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate editions and requires a likewise free of cost virtualization software such as Windows Virtual PC, comes as a separate download available on Microsoft website.

Windows 7 comes in both x64 and x32 installation disks. Roughly speaking, x64 (64-bit) OSes can handle greater amounts of RAM e.g. 4GB etc. However, all computers dont suppport 64-bit technology.

Aero Snap feature: allows placing two windows side by side for easy viewing and copy-paste task.

As the world wide web is becoming increasingly dynamic each passing day, the everyday life of every individual on the planet is being penetrated by technology big time.

This dynamic nature of the web is facilitating a surge of some breakthrough technological advancements that are helping us become more produtive and efficient at the everyday tasks.

As internet has become an integral part of our everyday life, today I am going to introduce you to a wonderful browser add-on: Cooliris, which certainly is a must have for all PC users ( Don't worry, It is supported by Mac and Linux as well ).

Cooliris, formerly known as PicLens, is an infinite 3D wall which eliminates the lousy "Next" page click from your life. You can use this browser add-on with Google Images, Picasa, Flicker, Facebook or any other supported site.

It gives an incredible image viewing experience as you can scroll through hundreds of images in just a matter of seconds. Launching this app is also quite easy.

Windows XP and Vista: IE 7, IE 8, Firefox 3.0-3.5+ and Flock 2

Mac OS X Leopard: Firefox 3.0-3.5+, safari 3, Safari 4 and Flock
