You Can't Go Wrong With Agriculture Investment

I used to work for a corporate firm (8am to 5pm job), having been expose to almost all sorts of office task including earlier background on visual design and advertising. But after more than 10 years in office duties, I decided to shifted to commodity trading after I went to Singapore on 2005 (mentored by a Singaporean). My start was a sort of trial and error (e.g. crude oil, scrap metal, seafoods, agricultural products, etc.). Later I concentrated on agriultural products primarily on cavendish banana and rice as I seem to fit on it. As others have said, “you can’t go wrong if you are happy with what you are doing and/or if you invest in agriculture.”

I just tried on offering bananas as per request of an acquaintance business woman. In a matter of one week, I my self could not believe that a Lebanese client arrived and asked me to book himself and his wife to a five star hotel in the Manila. After few a few day talks and presentation, my client handed me advance downpayment in cash (US$). Weeks later, my partner were shipping containers of Cavendish Bananas to Jeddah, Dubai UAE, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Egypt and other Middle East countries. Little did I knew then that exporting bananas is a profitable venture and has been highly demanded mosly in the Middle East. At times, you need not seek buyers because they always come seeking sellers like you as what happened to me. But be careful as there are also lots of scammers in this business. Beside Middle East, other countries also import Philippine Cavendish bananas as it is one of the most favored in the world.

Vicky Wallace and Her Bee Farm in Bohol Philippines

Who would have thought that a high earning US base Filipino Nurse and a mother would trade all she owned in America, in exchange of her one chance to establish a community building organic farm in Bohol Philippines. Better known as Bohol Bee Farm.

The lady in the spot light is “Vicky Wallace,” a New York based nurse-turned-farmer.” I loved what she said…

“You make good money in the States but you have to ask yourself what is it all about.” I had three jobs. I hardly saw my kids. So after the school year there ended, I brought them here.”

She also said that returning to the Philippines to start a business was one of the best decisions she made in her life.

Rough Start for Vicky

As always, the non-traditional are the ones persecuted for their unorthodox vision. It was when Vicky’s husband died in 1988. She began to rethink of her priorities as a mother and in life. As mentioned, it wasn’t an easy decision to make. Nonetheless, Vicky was firm on her decision, no matter what other people said. Vicky bought lands where she invested some of her earned money, of which they settled in of it. She started selling vegetables to her children’s classmates. Her success in homemade bread starts when she baked breads that suits customer’s tastes. She observed that foreigners don’t like it sweet. In the contrary, locals love their kamote bread, which is slightly sweeter. Bee Farm’s herb bread is a hit to foreigners and hopes to win Filipinos tastes soon. There’s no stopping this lady as she also offered muffins and crafts, something she learned in the US.

Old Kano - From Farm Animals to Organic Farming

One thing I like about National Geographic and Discovery Channel is their highly informative exploration in almost all aspects of human lives and the environment. But still, they could not tell it all as this world alone is too big for a show as theirs. Hope with this site of mine, I was able to relay some of the not so famous places I visited. Thus, in my own way I could pay tribute as well to some pioneers in their own fields.

At this point, allow me to uncover an organic farm in Silang, Cavite Philippines (near Tagaytay City) named, “Old Kano.”

The word “Kano” is a colloquial term for American. I would like to show some of the pictures I’ve taken before I proceed…

Allow me to tell you the story. Old Kano farm has a total lot area of 12,747 square meters along the province of Silang Cavite Philippines. The couple Mrs. Julieta and the late Mr. Fred Ammann owned this farm.

The couple actually started in Caloocan City (Metro Manila) where their actual business is selling of rabbits, turkey and other farm animals to some restaurant businesses in Manila. If I were not mistaken, the couple acquired the farm lot to expand their business they started in Caloocan. By that time, the Old Kano farm was not yet as known today. As days goes by, Fred Ammann started to sow some plot of “Dill” (exotic herbs) out of plain hobby. As this farm is along the way to the famous tourist destination Taal volcano view at Tagaytay City, an unexpected visitor one day came and he simply could not ignore the bed of “Dill.” He is Mr. Werner Berger. He bought some and asked how many he could grow. Mr. Berger came back but this time he brought with him the head chef then of Manila Peninsula, Mr. Alfred Moser. The man did not just order 30 kgs of dill every week but ask what else he grow. Mr. Fred handed a seed catalog to Chef Moser. The rest is history.

Out of a Mr. Fred’s plain hobby turned into a chance of a life time. Although not that big as what others have made, Mr. Fred sow more that a seed of dill but a legacy of practical organic farming in the Philippines that could sprout into more bigger and high modern organic farms in this land.

Now, Old Kano farm has abandoned farm animal selling and only produces a lot of salad crops, edible flowers and some exotic vegetables produced exclusively at the farm. They supply to many hotels and restaurants mostly in Metro Manila.

Old Kano was the pioneer on organic farming. Some of their offer are as follows: green ice, romain, lolo rosa, red lettuces, tatsoi, mizuna, cucumber, new zealand spinach, baby carrots, endive, french beans, kohlrabi, red raddish, cherry tomatoes , turnips tokyo, and stripped egg plants. Among the 18 varieties of herbs they produce are purple basil, sweet basil, cilantro, dill, marjoram, mint, Italian oregano, Italain parsley, arugula, rosemary, sage, sorrel, mexican tarragon, thyme, thai pepper, the habanero pepper, the cayenne. Their also produce tatsoi fine leaves, mizuna fine leaves, rocketa fin leaves, fennel fine leaves, kohlrabi fine leaves, sorrel fine leaves, mesclun leaves mix with lettuce leaves, mustard and radish sprout.

I was able to talk to one of the worker. I admire how they continue what Mr. Fred’s legacy under Mrs. Julieta (Mr. Fred’s wife). I fell in love with this farm though you could see how time has dilapidated many of the facilities. How I wish I could acquire this Old Kano farm to continue the vision of Mr. Fred and elevate it into the next level. I am more than willing to joint venture with an foreign partner with knowledge in farm technology advancement to put up both a farming school and modern farm as what Kim Yong Ki has done to Canaan Farm-School in South Korea without forgetting the vision of Mr. Fred. I know I could improve its façade to make it also friendly for visitors and tourist as it is also done in Thailand and in other known agri farms. Global commodity trading is now pointing to organic so this and other farms is sure winner if given the right investment and improvements.

Happy Mother's Day!

In the U.S. Mothers’ Day is a holiday celebrated on second Sunday in May. It is a day when children honor their mothers with cards, gifts, and flowers. First observance in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1907, it is based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and Anna Jarvis in 1907.

Although it wasn’t celebrated in the U.S. until 1908, there were days honoring mothers even in the days of ancient Greece. In those days, however, it was Rhea, the Mother of the gods that was given honor.

Later, in the 1600′s, in England there was an annual observance called “Mothering Sunday.” It was celebrated during Lent, on the fourth Sunday. On Mothering Sunday, the servants, who generally lived with their employers, were encouraged to return home and honor their mothers. It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion.

In the U.S., in 1908 Ana Jarvis, from Grafton, West Virginia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. Jarvis persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother’s Day on the anniversary of her mother’s death. A memorial service was held there on May 10, 1908 and in Philadelphia the following year where Jarvis moved.

Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother’s Day. They were successful. The demands of moringa are getting bigger and bigger every day. But I noticed the need for product development is somehow lacking. It was only yesterday that I was able to view the film, "Julie and Julia" starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. It was such a nice movie and truly inspiring. Somehow I could relate to the character portrayed by Ms. Amy Adams as it is not that easy to be a blogger due to various reasons and obstacles. Both of them are exceptional on their acting especially Ms. Streep. On the contrary, I find Ms. Amy Adams as very natural on her role as if I knew her. She is so charming especially with her short hair and simple looks - natural beauty. I've seen many movies already but this is different and unique.

Something light for now.

I grew up in Quezon City Philippines and I could not deny how things have changed for the better in this place since my childhood days. Due to humid climate, I mostly do my daily trades and sites/blog posting recenly at SM City Mall North EDSA and Trinoma (both in Quezon City). Last holy week season, I admire SM City's effort to promote non-traditional Biblical themes -- "Noah's Ark with life size moving animal stuff. Recently, they again bark on the same animal style stuff. It's just that this time they incorporate the animal stuff in an African theme named, "SAFARI." I noticed that people of all ages flocked and the kids loved it. Even teens and young adults enjoy showing of animal stuff and many took their pictures. The exhibit was showcased at SM City North EDSA "Sky Garden." Better to show the photos I took my self so viewers of my blog will relate...

Russian Plane Crashed with Polish President

It’s a sad news for Russia as its Russian plane crashed on Saturday having on board the Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife and some of the country's highest military and civilian leaders whom believed to instantly died during a landing process on a thick fog in Western Russia. All passengers which is 96, believed instantly died as per report gathered. As mentioned, there were no survivors on the 26-year-old Tupolev. They arrived from an event marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.

He is the toast in the boxin world. Manny is his nickname. His real name is Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao. Also called as the “Pacman.” Manny Pacquiao was born on December 17, 1978 at Kibawe, Bukidnon, Mindanao and currently resides in his home town General Santos City, South Cotabato, Philippines. He is married to Jinkee Pacquiao and they have four children.
No other boxer in history whom have won seven world titles in seven different weight divisions.
In addition, he is the former Ring Magazine featherweight and super featherweight champion. He is now the, Ring Magazine light welterweight champion, and is rated by Ring Magazine as the number 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world.

Who would have thought that this young man from a very poor broken family from General Santos Philippines would even conquer the lineal championship in four different weight classes. Hew started with only 106 pounds (light flyweight) when he was only 16. His potentials were first noticed through a boxing show titled, “Blow by Blow” where he fought at small boxing venues. His professional debut was a four round bout against Edmund “Enting” Ignacio, on January 22, 1995, which Pacquiao won via decision, becoming an instant star of the program. Manny’s boxing career made a drastic turn around after the death of his close friend Mark Penaflorida in 1994. He was the one who encourage the young Pacquiao to pursue a professional boxing career.

Pacquiao’s big break came on when unexpectedly, he was asked as a late replacement on two weeks’ notice against former IBF World super bantamweight champion Lehlohonolo Ledwaba at MGM Grand Las Vegas, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He won! He became the new IBF World super bantamweight champion (his second major boxing world title). Pacquiao went on. COREY HAIM DEAD?

As per Police report, 38 year old Hollywood Actor Corey Haim, was pronounced dead after 3 a.m. at a Burbank hospital. No further details was mentioned as the case is still under investigation. Nonetheless, it was told that a police spokesman said more details would be available later.

Records shows that Haim, struggled with drug problems in the past years.

As I read and view the photos, the beaches seem nice. I just wonder why not even one beach from South East Asia was chosen.

Philippines is now considered by renowned marine scientist as the “Center of the Center” for marine biodiversity. How in a world Philippines became the center of the center yet not one of its beaches is not included even on the least of the top 10? I ask because the beaches are the main issue here. Isn’t it that the word “beach” pertains primarily to the body of water and the natural formations and living organism underneath? Isn’t it the second focus is the natural formation of land and sand above sea level?

BLOOM BOX = ENERGY BREAKTHROUGH

If you didn’t know it yet, there is an energy breakthrough that may soon become the next big thing. It is called the Bloom Box. As per gathered information, over around 100 start-ups from Silicon Valley are said to be working on it. One of them is Bloom Energy. This is literally rocket science but the wiz from Silicon Valley is turning the idea into something user friendly. To cut the crop, the Bloom Box is described as “a little power plant- in-a-box. It is being develop so anyone can have his own power plant in the convenince of his/her own backyard. As mentioned, the Bloom Boxes will generate electricity to empower home and it will be wireless. It is intentionally to replace big power plant. A Bloom Box can literally power an average American home. In the contrary, it can power four to six (4-6) average homes from either Asia or India. Average American homes uses more power than those from Asia and India. Isn’t it great? It ain’t a dream, it’s perfectly real!

Earlier I said “rocket science” because the man behind (K.R. Sridhar) invented the same for NASA, a few years ago. He is confident because that thing works. Better than that, it can produce oxygen.

This was supposed to be for NASA’s Mars mission but it was scrapped. Who would have thought that this invention could make people live on Mars, as guaranteed by Sridhar? Previously, such are only seen on movies. Sridhar made a breakthrough by inventing a new kind fuel cell, which is like a very skinny battery that always runs. Sridhar feeds oxygen to it on one side, and fuel on the other. The two combine within the cell to create a chemical reaction that produces electricity. There’s no need for burning or combustion, and no need for power lines from an outside source. Wow!!!

Sridhar did not loose hope. Instead of shelving the idea, he managed to get a meeting with John Doerr from the big Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins on October 2001. Doerr believed in Sridhar’s proposal and the rest is history. For those who didn’t know Doerr, he is man behind the discovery of Netscape, Amazon and Google. When he listened to Sridhar, the idea seemed just as transformative: efficient, inexpensive, clean energy out of a box.

A question was raised if Bloom Box is a threat to utility companies. Doerr confidently say, “No, I think the utility companies will see this as a solution,” Doerr said. “All they need to do is buy Bloom boxes, put them in the substation for the neighborhood and sell that electricity and operate.” It was also mentioned that Bloom Box system can use fossil fuels like natural gas. Its system can use renewable fuels like landfill gas, bio-gas, and can use solar.”

To prove of its worth and reliability, Doerr bragged that they already has customers. Twenty large, well-known companies have quietly bought and are testing Bloom boxes in California. As told, they were at their customer’s hub in Oakland the day Bloom installed their boxes, each one costing $700-800,000. One perfect reason why companies tried, it is because 20 percent of the cost is subsidized by the state, and there’s a 30 percent federal tax break because it’s a “green” technology. In layman’s terms… around 50% off. Some of the companies are: FedEx, Wallmart, eBay, Google, etc.

There were reports that eBay have already saved the company more than $100,000 in electricity costs since they bought Bloom Box for their firm. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell himself testified that Bloom Box works. He is currently one of the Board of Directors. As to gathered reports, Mr. Powell do not believed that this will be the messiah to ongoing global power problem. Istead, he reiterated that he believe it will have its significant contribution.

The people behind is aming that Bloom Box would be in every home in five to ten years.

Per gathered report, a strong earthquake just hit Eastern Turkey with a magnitude of 6 in the ricter scale. 38 people were pressumed dead and 60 people were also injured which occurred at 4:32 a.m. (0232 GMT) in Elazig province. Most people were sleeping when the earth was shaken.

As per report, everything has been knocked down, there is not a stone in place.

The quake was felt in neighboring provinces of Tunceli, Bingol and Diyarbakir where residents fled to the streets in panic and spent the night outdoors.

Records shows that Turkey frequently experience earthquake as it lies atop the North Anatolian fault. In 1999, 18,000 people died when two powerful earthquakes struck northwestern Turkey.

CHANGE HAS COME TO AMERICA'S CREDIT CARDS

The new federal credit card rules finally took effect Monday to regulate the business that eaten America alive over the past years. As per report, the rules, passed by Congress in May, seek to “level the playing field” between consumers and credit card companies, President Obama said. Nonetheless, new regulatory bodies are needed to replace the fractured oversight of seven regulatory bodies that failed to prevent the abusive credit card practices.

Among the changes that took effect Monday:
- Increased interest rates cannot be applied retroactively to existing balances. New rates can apply only to new charges.
- The interest rate on a fixed-rate credit card cannot be increased during the first year an account is open unless the customer is more than 60 days behind in making a payment.
- Banks cannot automatically sign up customers for programs that allow them to exceed their credit limit for a set fee. Customers must proactively opt-in to such programs.
- Fees on a credit card, such as the annual fee, cannot be more than 25% of the card’s initial credit limit.
- People younger than 21 must show they can make credit card payments or have a co-signer to open an account.
- Bills must denote how long it would take to pay off the card’s balance if only the minimum payment is made, and how much in total the customer would end up paying.
- Payments over the minimum must be applied to the balance with the highest interest rate.
- The due date for credit card payments must be the same every month, and payments cannot be due earlier than 5 p.m. on a business day. Customers have until the next business day when a due date falls on a weekend or a holiday.

Those provisions follow ones that took effect in August requiring banks to notify customers at least 45 days before increasing a card’s interest rate and to mail statements 21 days before the bill is due, up from 14 days.

The new rules are expected to help consumers but critics say it won’t solve all the problems.
But as mentioned by one customer, “at least we’re no longer going to get run over by the train from behind,” he said. “Now we can see it coming and maybe jump to the next track.”

Philippine May Face Its Worst Drought in History

These days, you can feel the humid almost every where in the Philippines as if it is already a part of Middle East. My brother once said that this kind of humid was what he experienced when he still works for a firm in Saudi Arabia. As per reports this phoenomenon is not just happening in the Philippines but in many parts of South East Asia and South Asia. It is called the “El Nino” phoenomenon.

Filipinos eat calamity news for breakfast. We are a survivor. We just survived the two typhoons that devastate the nation in last quarter of 2009. Life must go on for the Filipinos but the recent drought seems to be another difficult situation. Nearly 400,000 acres of farmland have already been affected and still increasing til July or up. Many crops were already damaged at about $61 million, as per gathered report. If not given an effective and immediate counter solution, this drought is threatening a widespread blackouts and food crisis as electrification and farming depends on ample supply of water. A possible two- to three-hour blackout every day until the national elections in May could happen, as per mentioned in the House energy committee hearing this week.

Cloud-seeding operations already done in many areas as northern part of Luzon and the government has allotted some $20 million to aid farm and fishing in at least 14 of the country’s 80 provinces.

Hope experts across the globe would provide suggestions and support in terms of knowledge and technology. We already have lots of intelligent good talkers in the government. Now we need good doers with exceptional wisdom in natural crisis as drought. Seldom have we seen this on politicians.

Historically, mega structures is needed to battle a national crisis and to uplift the nation above and beyond where it is. Inventors must also take part as necessity is the mother of all inventions. Hope the Filipino brilliant engineers and professionals on this area in many countries of the world would voice out their know how and suggestions. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio tandem paved way for another blockbuster hit. Shutter Island got $40.2 on its debut. Athough all the cast and crew has to be recognized, Ben Kingsley himself recognized the two for their better chemistry.
