*Happy Primary School students cheering*

In a heartwarming gesture of gratitude, alumni of SEVAI Government Aided Primary School, Mettumarudur returned to their alma mater to meet the current students. Many of these former students went on to pursue higher education after their primary years at SEVAI and are now employed in respected, high-level positions.

As a way of giving back, the alumni presented notebooks and crayons to the school’s primary students. The gifts were shared with smiles and encouragement, with the alumni speaking to the children about the value of learning, discipline, and dreaming big – reminding them that their own journey began in the very same classrooms.

Head Mistress Smt. Kaliammal, along with the school’s teachers, warmly welcomed the visiting alumni and expressed deep appreciation for their thoughtfulness. They lauded the alumni for remembering their roots and for inspiring the present students through both their success and their generosity.

The event turned into a joyful exchange between past and present – a reminder that SEVAI continues to shape young minds who go on to achieve, and who in turn come back to lift the next generation.🙋🥉Govin

Trichy birds park Investment and Revenue Share for TDWFC

Founded on the seventh of June in Nineteen Hundred sixty two with a local contribution of Rupees Six Hundred Twenty Two as initial investment, the Trichy District Welfare Fund Committee began as a community initiative driven by the vision of Trichy’s prominent citizens. It continues today as a living testament to what collective spirit can build without reliance on government grants.

Over the years, the Committee has grown while staying true to its roots. Government officials joined its ranks, and the District Collector serves as the Hon. Chairman of the Committee, guiding its work with administrative insight while preserving its community-driven character. It remains sustained by the generosity of the public. On its own land near the Trichy Central Bus Stand, it has constructed two Kalyan Mandapams and an office complex, collectively known as the Kalaiarangam premises. With an investment of around six crore rupees, the Committee also partnered in establishing the Trichy Birds Park and now shares in its revenue.

The heart of its work beats in service. The Committee runs a cost-free coaching centre for competitive examinations, supports persons with physical disabilities, promotes sports, and provides medical emergency aid and educational assistance to families in need. It responds swiftly to projects that address urgent community requirements. All of this unfolds under the blessings of the Kalyan Ganapathi temple within its campus, especially during Hindu weddings held at its Mandapams.

We wish the Trichy District Welfare Fund Committee continued strength and greater resources to expand its reach and deepen its impact for the people of Trichy and beyond.🙏Govin

 Value added mushroom products

Under the leadership of Priya, the SEVAI team is empowering rural communities through the DESWOS project in the Amoor Kalanjium cluster by training local farmers in scientific mushroom cultivation and the production of value-added products such as pickles, powders, and snacks. The program goes beyond cultivation skills to cover hygiene, packaging, and quality standards, while directly linking participants to suitable market channels including local vendors, retailers, and online platforms. By building the capacity of small-scale growers to operate as rural entrepreneurs, SEVAI enables consistent income generation, reduces reliance on seasonal crops, and creates sustainable livelihoods that strengthen the rural economy and improve household nutrition.

Syllabus Review and Lesson Planning at SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School: A Standard-Wise Academic Roadmap Led by Principal Smt. Chitra Balasubramanian*

At SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, the academic year begins with a focused Syllabus Review Workshop led by Principal Smt. Chitra Balasubramanian. During this session, every teacher carefully examines the prescribed syllabus for their subject and standard, from LKG to Class 12, to ensure that classroom instruction is structured, progressive, and aligned with the intended learning outcomes. The goal is to create a clear roadmap for teaching that balances conceptual clarity with engaging classroom practices.

In the Foundation Stage, covering LKG to Class 2, teachers concentrate on building strong basics through play-based and activity-oriented learning as outlined in the Matriculation curriculum. Language development in Tamil and English centers on alphabets, phonics, simple words, and listening-speaking skills, supported by storytelling and rhymes. In Mathematics, children learn number recognition up to 100, counting, shapes, sizes, and basic addition using concrete objects. Environmental Science introduces colors, animals, plants, seasons, and good habits, while life skills such as sharing, cleanliness, and respect are reinforced through daily routines. Lesson plans at this stage rely heavily on songs, visuals, and hands-on activities to make learning joyful and meaningful.

For the Primary Stage, Classes 3 to 5, the syllabus expands to develop reading, writing, and conceptual understanding. Tamil and English classes cover grammar basics, comprehension, creative writing, and reading fluency. Mathematics introduces multiplication, division, fractions, measurement, time, and money. Science lessons explore parts of plants, the human body, matter, energy, and the water cycle, often supported by simple experiments. Social Science focuses on local geography, community helpers, festivals, and basic map skills, while Computer Science introduces the keyboard, MS Paint, and fundamental digital tools. Teachers prepare term-wise lesson plans that include worksheets, group work, and formative assessments to track progress.

In the Middle Stage, Classes 6 to 8, the Matriculation syllabus deepens subject knowledge and encourages analytical thinking. Tamil and English literature classes cover prose and poetry, advanced grammar, essay writing, and comprehension. Mathematics moves into algebra, geometry, statistics, integers, and practical geometry. Science is divided into Physics, focusing on motion and force; Chemistry, covering elements and acids; and Biology, introducing the cell and reproduction. Social Science includes the history of India, Civics based on the Constitution, and Geography exploring climate and resources. Computer Science adds MS Office, Scratch programming, and lessons on internet safety. Lesson plans at this level incorporate project work, laboratory activities, and regular revision to reinforce learning.

For Secondary Stage, Classes 9 and 10, the syllabus is closely aligned with board requirements while maintaining a balance between concept clarity and exam readiness. Tamil and English study includes prose, poetry, grammar, letter writing, and unseen passages. Mathematics covers trigonometry, coordinate geometry, polynomials, and probability. Science delves into electricity and light in Physics, atomic structure and reactions in Chemistry, and genetics and health in Biology. Social Science addresses modern Indian history, Civics on democratic institutions, and Geography on industries and resources. Teachers map the syllabus to the academic calendar, schedule unit tests, and plan remedial sessions to address learning gaps.

At the Higher Secondary level, Classes 11 and 12, the curriculum offers depth and application across core subjects. Students study Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, and Computer Applications, with a strong emphasis on practical work, problem-solving, and application-based learning. Tamil and English continue with advanced literature, writing skills, and communication. Lesson plans are designed for timely completion of topics, supported by frequent model tests and individualized feedback to prepare students for board examinations and higher education.

Under the guidance of Principal Smt. Chitra Balasubramanian, this collaborative syllabus review ensures that every teacher leaves with a clear term-wise breakdown of their standard’s syllabus, a detailed lesson plan linking concepts to activities and assessments, and shared teaching strategies across subjects. This process guarantees that SEVAI Shanthi students experience structured, engaging, and outcome-based learning at every stage of their school journey.🥉Govin

*Commerce with Computer Application at SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pettavaithalai: Building Future-Ready Skills for AI, Data Science, and Global Careers*

Commerce with Computer Application has become one of the most relevant subject combinations at the +2 level because it merges business understanding with essential digital skills. In today’s academic landscape, universities offering Artificial Intelligence and Data Science at graduation and post-graduation levels look for students who not only know how to code but also understand how data drives business decisions. Students from the Commerce stream already study accounting, economics, statistics, and management, which builds strong analytical thinking. When paired with Computer Application, they gain practical knowledge of programming, databases, spreadsheets, and software tools. This combination prepares them directly for BCA, http://B.Com with Computer Application, BBA Analytics, http://B.Sc Data Science, and even interdisciplinary http://B.Tech programs in AI.

From a career perspective, the global job market increasingly values hybrid skills over narrow specialization. Employers in finance, banking, e-commerce, fintech, and consulting are hiring graduates who can interpret business data and use technology to solve real problems. Commerce with Computer Application opens doors to roles like Business Analyst, Data Analyst, Digital Marketing Analyst, and roles in supply chain and operations analytics. It also creates a smooth pathway into AI and machine learning support roles, where understanding data context is as important as technical execution. Professionals with this background are better positioned for remote and international opportunities because they can bridge communication between business teams and tech teams.

The flexibility of this stream is another major advantage. After +2, students can choose to deepen their tech expertise by pursuing BCA and MCA with specializations in AI or Data Science, or they can stay within the business domain through http://B.Com or BBA followed by an MBA in Analytics, Finance, or IT. They can also combine it with professional courses like CA, CMA, or CS, where technology skills add significant value. For students at SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, the Commerce bridge with +2 Computer Application means they are not limited to traditional commerce careers. Instead, they are building a foundation aligned with the digital economy, making them competitive for both higher studies and future jobs in a rapidly evolving global situation.

Students and teachers promote Agro Forestry.

On World Environment Day, 5th June 2026, something special took root at SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Pettavaithalai. Stepping beyond the walls of the classroom, students and teachers came together to compose a lively, heartfelt song for the people who matter most to them—their parents, the farmers of Trichy and Karur. The message was simple and urgent: look at that extra patch of land, the one with water and fencing already in place, and fill it with fruit trees and timber trees that will sustain families for generations.

The song carries more than melody. It tells the story of a movement already growing across their districts—the SEVAI-Greening India Agro Forestry Program, supported through the SEVAI-Zomato Agro Forestry initiative. Through this partnership, farmers receive high-quality saplings of both fast-growing timber and income-yielding fruit species, completely free of cost. But the support doesn’t end at distribution. Farmers are walked through every step—pit preparation, planting techniques, mulching, and organic protection. Where needed, guidance on micro-irrigation is also provided to help young trees withstand the harsh summer months. Plantation assistance and fertilizers are included, so farmers can begin with confidence.

The students use their song to explain why certain trees are chosen. Fruit trees such as mango, guava, lemon, and sapota bring nutrition to the home and begin to provide steady cash income within three to five years. Once established, they continue to bear for over forty years. Timber trees like teak and mahogany line the field borders, serving as a long-term savings plan—valuable for construction, a financial safety net for life’s big expenses, and a source of climate resilience for the farm.

Through their lyrics, the students highlight what parents need to know. After the first two years, the trees require only seasonal care. The benefits are many: fruit for food and sale, timber as a retirement fund, leaf litter that enriches the soil, shade for livestock, and naturally cooler farms. To make learning easy, Zomato-Greening India and SEVAI organize farmer field days, where neighbors can see firsthand which species thrive in local soil and rainfall. To join the program, farmers need at least one acre of extra land, assured water for the first two summers, basic fencing to protect saplings from goats and cattle, and the willingness to attend a single training session. SEVAI and Zomato-Greening India field staff make regular follow-up visits to ensure the trees grow strong.

The heart of the song is captured in its chorus: _“Ippadi naduvom na, pillainga, pēran paduvanga”_—“If we plant like this, our children and grandchildren will benefit.” Fruit trees begin to repay while children are still in school. Timber trees mature into a financial cushion for education, health, or marriage decades later. The soil grows richer, the farm grows cooler, and the land once again fills with birdsong.

Born on World Environment Day 2026, this student-teacher collaboration is doing something powerful. It is translating agroforestry into a language farmers trust—the voice of their own children. It is an invitation wrapped in melody, urging farmers to plant not just trees, but a future that grows greener with every passing season.🌿Govin

*Goats as a Lifeline: How SEVAI Niruvanam is Empowering Landless Women in Thottiyapatty Village*

In Thottiyapatty village, goat rearing has emerged as a powerful lifeline for landless women striving for financial independence. With minimal investment and little space required, this livelihood activity fits seamlessly into their homes, offering quick returns and multiple benefits—from milk and meat to organic manure for small kitchen gardens. Supported by SEVAI Niruvanam, the project goes beyond simply distributing goats. Women receive hands-on training in goat selection, feed management, vaccinations, deworming, and maternity care, along with ongoing guidance from field staff and veterinary experts. Delivered through self-help groups, the initiative uses a revolving fund model: once a woman benefits and her goats breed, she passes on a kid to another woman, expanding the impact across the community. SEVAI Niruvanam also links the women to local markets, festivals, and government schemes for credit and livestock insurance, ensuring they get fair prices and financial security. The results are visible in Thottiyapatty—women now earn a steady monthly income, contribute to household expenses, invest in their children’s education, and have a stronger voice in family decisions. For these women, goats are not just animals; they are a source of dignity, resilience, and hope. Through this program, SEVAI Niruvanam is turning landless women into confident entrepreneurs who are shaping their own futures.

SEVAI Observes World Environment Day at Dasilnaickanoor Watershed Area_

On morning hours of June 5, 2026, SEVAI, a non-profit organization, observed World Environment Day in the Dasilnaickanoor Watershed area with active participation from village children, parents, and farmers. The event brought together the community to reflect on the urgent need for environmental conservation and its direct link to climate change adaptation in rural areas. Mr. K. Devendran, a well-known environmental activist, led the discussions, emphasizing how tree coverage and the development of water bodies can help villages withstand the growing impacts of erratic weather, heat, and water scarcity.

Environmental conservation is not an abstract idea—it is the foundation of rural life. Trees clean the air, reduce heat, prevent soil erosion, and provide shelter for birds and insects. Water bodies recharge groundwater, store rainwater, and support both agriculture and livestock. In villages like Dasilnaickanoor, increasing green cover and restoring traditional water systems are the simplest yet most effective ways to adapt to climate change. Without trees, there is less rain; without rain, farming suffers; without water bodies, summers bring acute shortages. The cycle is clear, and so is the solution.

The process of building climate resilience starts with small, collective actions. SEVAI’s approach focuses on three practical steps. First, tree planting—especially native species like neem, pongamia, mango, and gooseberry—along field bunds, common lands, and around homes. But planting alone is not enough; protecting and watering saplings until they grow is equally important. Second, restoring and maintaining water bodies such as village tanks, ponds, and channels by removing debris and ensuring rainwater flows freely into them. Promoting household rainwater harvesting further boosts water security. Third, shifting toward chemical-free farming by using organic fertilizers to keep soil healthy and prevent water pollution.

Building on the tree planting and conservation work already undertaken by Dasilnaickanoor families, continued care and expansion of green cover can transform the landscape further within a few years—making it greener, cooler, and more water-secure. This is not just about the environment; it is about securing livelihoods, protecting children’s futures, and giving the community the strength to face climate challenges.

During the event, Mr. K. Devendran also acknowledged the sustained support of Mrs. Benjamine Oberoi, Co-Chairman of OFI, for her knowledge-sharing and hands-on guidance to SEVAI over the years. He specifically appreciated her contribution to water bodies development, food production initiatives, and women’s empowerment programs, noting that her partnership has been instrumental in strengthening SEVAI’s impact on the ground.

SEVAI’s World Environment Day event was a reminder that conservation begins at the grassroots, and that real change grows from the simple, steady work of people who care for their land, supported by committed partners who walk alongside the community.🌿Govin

If every household in Dasilnaickanoor commits to planting a tree and safeguarding a water source, the landscape can transform within a few years—greener, cooler, and more water-secure. This is not just about the environment; it is about securing livelihoods, protecting children’s futures, and giving the community the strength to face climate challenges. SEVAI’s World Environment Day event was a reminder that conservation begins at the grassroots, and that real change grows from the simple, steady work of people who care for their land.☀️🌿Govin

SEVAI’s Government Aided Primary Tamil Medium Schools at Mettumarudur and Pichandarkoil – Raja School and Natesan School – reopened on 4th June 2026 to a warm and welcoming start for the new academic year.

With support from the Government, students in both schools are receiving free breakfast and lunch, along with textbooks, stationary bags, and school uniforms, ensuring that no child misses learning due to lack of resources. SEVAI complements this by providing well-maintained classrooms and appointing dedicated, promotive teachers.

Inside the classrooms, teaching follows Tamil Nadu State Board’s activity-based approach. Learning in Std 1-5 is built around hands-on activities, play-way methods, and joyful learning rather than rote memorization. Teachers use Tamil as the medium of instruction, supported by songs, storytelling, group work, and low-cost Teaching Learning Materials made from local resources. Children learn numbers through seed counting, Tamil letters through sand writing, and science concepts through observation of their village surroundings.

Assessment is continuous and stress-free, focusing on each child’s progress through tasks, oral work, and portfolios instead of heavy exams. Extra remedial support is given to children who need help in reading Tamil or basic Maths, so every student is prepared with confidence for high school education.

Together, the free meals, learning materials, and child-centered teaching create a strong foundation for rural children at Raja and Natesan Schools, helping them transition smoothly from primary to high school.

There’s a quiet magic when tradition walks through the school gates. At *SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pettavathalai Campus*, that magic arrived with the *Utsavar Raja Alangaram Sri Bala Murugar* from *SEVAI Shanthi Nivasham* – the temple that resides within the school campus itself – carried in a reverent _Veedhi Ula_ to bless every corner of the institution.

 *The Utsavar in Raja Alangaram*

The Utsavar Murti of Lord Bala Murugar, adorned in royal _Raja Alangaram_, is not just an idol in procession. He embodies the youthful vigour, wisdom, and protective energy of the *Aarupadai Veedu* – the six sacred abodes of Murugan across Tamil Nadu. When His form is brought out for _Veedhi Ula_, it is believed that the combined grace of Tirupparankundram, Tiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Tiruttani, and Pazhamudircholai travels with Him.

*A Blessing Walk on Mini Chariot*

On days of special significance to Lord Muruga – Krittikai, Thaipusam, Skanda Sashti, and others – the Utsavar is placed on a beautifully adorned *mini chariot on wheels* and taken in a ceremonial walk through the Pettavathalai campus. The rolling chariot turns the school corridor into a moving temple:

 - *For the students*: A moment to pause books, fold hands, and receive the blessing for clarity of mind, courage to face challenges, and strength to pursue learning with devotion.

 - *For the teachers*: An invocation of Murugan as _Gurudeva_, the divine teacher, seeking patience, insight, and the ability to shape young minds.

 - *For the staff and management*: A prayer for harmony, dedication, and the sustained spirit of service that SEVAI Shanthi Nivasham stands for.

Chants of _“Vel Vel Muruga”_, the fragrance of sambrani, and the rhythmic beat of the drums fill the air as children, teachers, and staff line the path, offering flowers and receiving _vibhooti_ – carrying home not just ash, but a reminder of purpose and protection.

 *Why This Matters*

In a fast-paced academic world, the _Veedhi Ula_ roots the school community in something timeless. It connects students to Tamil heritage, to the symbolism of Murugan’s _Vel_ – wisdom piercing ignorance – and to the idea that education and spirituality can walk side by side.

SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School has long balanced academic excellence with cultural grounding. Having *Shanthi Nivasham within the campus* and bringing the *Utsavar Raja Alangaram Sri Bala Murugar* out on Murugan’s sacred days is one more way the school nurtures not just minds, but hearts.

As the mini chariot completes its round and the Utsavar returns to Shanthi Nivasham, the campus feels lighter. The blessings remain – in the quiet focus of a student, the calm patience of a teacher, and the shared sense that this place is looked after by something greater.

_Vel Vel Muruga. May the grace of Aarupadai Murugan guide the SEVAI Shanthi family always._

On 31 May, Puduhai Muthamil Sangam commemorated its First Anniversary with the release of a new _Haiku Book_ by its President, Smt. Jaya Vedachalam. The event drew together Tamil scholars, poets, authors, and distinguished guests for a morning devoted to literary reflection and appreciation.

In a series of thoughtful addresses, speakers explored the nuances of Tamil expression and the refined art of haiku. Smt. Jaya Vedachalam’s deep familiarity with Tamil literature drew wide praise, as did the clarity, emotional depth, and cultural resonance of the haiku featured in the book. Her work demonstrates how the compact 5-7-5 form can carry enduring Tamil sensibility.

The gathering unfolded in a warm and celebratory spirit, with cordial exchanges among participants. The event’s smooth conduct reflected the efforts of Dr. Ramya and Advocate Shri P. Vedachalam, who coordinated arrangements alongside the Sangam’s office bearers.

The release of the _Haiku Book_ marks a significant achievement in the Sangam’s inaugural year, affirming its commitment to nurturing Tamil literary tradition while encouraging contemporary poetic voices.☀️Govin

 Teachers Ready for Teaching techniques

 🥉

As the new academic year draws near, SEVAI Shanthi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Petttavaithalai, is coming alive with color, creativity, and care. On 4th June 2026, our classrooms will once again echo with the voices of students, and our teachers are making sure that every child feels seen, valued, and excited to return.

Leading this wave of preparation is our Principal, Mrs. Chitra Balasubramanian. Under her guidance, classrooms have transformed into spaces of thoughtful planning and artistic expression. Mrs. Balasubramanian has encouraged the staff to focus not only on readiness, but on creating an atmosphere that nurtures confidence and joy from the very first day.

 *More Than Just Charts*

Teachers and assistants are crafting vibrant welcome charts that go far beyond decoration. Each display is a message of encouragement, a burst of color, and a warm embrace for students walking through the school gates. From cheerful greetings in Tamil and English to charts highlighting learning goals, positive affirmations, and fun classroom themes, the staff are personalizing every corner. Alphabet trains for the youngest learners, motivational quotes for the seniors, and subject-specific boards that turn lessons into visual stories reflect the dedication our team brings to every grade.

*A Team Effort, Guided by Vision*

The school management has ensured that the campus is spotless and safe, while teachers pour their creativity into charts and bulletin boards. Support staff assist with arranging materials and setting up spaces. Mrs. Balasubramanian moves through the classrooms, offering ideas and appreciation, making sure the preparations align with the school’s vision of cleanliness, warmth, and educational prosperity.

 *A Warm Welcome Awaits*

When students arrive on 4th June, they will be greeted not just by their teachers, but by walls that speak of care, effort, and anticipation. These welcome charts remind every child that they belong, that learning will be joyful, and that the new year holds fresh opportunities.

At SEVAI Shanthi, we believe that a warm welcome sets the tone for a successful year. With Mrs. Chitra Balasubramanian leading the way, our school is ready, our hearts are open, and our students are about to step into a space made just for them.🥉Govin

 Biofloc fish rearing Unit

SEVAI, with the support of DESWOS, is actively conducting hands-on training in modern fish farming methods at the Amoor Kalanjium Centre. The programme focuses on two approaches: traditional open pond fish rearing and the advanced Biofloc Technology system.

Through this initiative, SEVAI is training women farmers to take up fish rearing as a sustainable livelihood. Participants learn pond preparation, seed selection, water quality management, feeding practices, and disease prevention for open pond culture. Alongside this, they are introduced to Biofloc Technology, which allows high-density fish farming in small spaces using beneficial microbes to maintain water quality and reduce feed costs.

The training combines classroom sessions with practical demonstrations, enabling women to gain both technical knowledge and confidence. By equipping women farmers with these skills, SEVAI aims to enhance household nutrition, create additional income streams, and promote self-reliance in rural communities.

This effort reflects SEVAI’s commitment to building climate-resilient and women-led aquaculture enterprises at the grassroots level.🌿Govin🌿

 Watering Saplings by Women Farmer.

 *Program Background*

SEVAI, in partnership with Zomato’s _Greening India_ initiative, is scaling up agro-forestry across selected blocks of Trichy and Karur districts. In the last year, 325,000 saplings of fruit and timber species were planted with participating farmers. Building on this, the program is now entering its next phase of expansion.

 *Current Phase: 2026 Plantation Drive*

 - *Farmer Selection*: Farmers with a minimum of 1 acre of spare land, access to water, and fencing facilities are being onboarded. Orientation sessions are currently underway to explain management practices and long-term benefits.

 - *Species Mix*: Saplings include Coconut, Lemon, Mango, Guava, Amla, Teak, and Mahogany. The mix provides short-to-medium term fruit income and long-term timber value.

 - *Cost Sharing*: To promote ownership, farmers contribute ₹10 per fruit tree sapling and ₹5 per timber tree sapling.

 - *SEVAI + Zomato Support*: Pit making, planting, and initial fertilizer inputs will be fully managed by SEVAI field teams in coordination with Zomato Greening India.

 *Implementation Timeline*

Arrangements for pit making are being finalized now. Plantation can begin anytime in June, aligned with the onset of the monsoon to ensure high survival rates.

 *Long-Term Commitment*

Farmers are encouraged to retain the trees for a minimum of 40 years to maximize both ecological and economic benefits. During the initial years, farmers may undertake intercropping between tree rows to generate additional income while the trees establish.

 *Expected Impact*

The program aims to diversify farm income, improve soil moisture and microclimate, increase green cover, and create long-term assets for farming households. With continued farmer engagement and technical support, the planted trees will serve as both an environmental and livelihood resource for the next generation. 🌿

SEVAI is implementing a two-year, demand-driven livelihood program under the DESWOS-SEVAI project to strengthen income security for 900 smallholder farmers, with a strong focus on women. The initiative builds capacity in ten practical, market-linked agro-enterprises that integrate seamlessly with existing farming systems and require low capital outlay: Korai grass mat weaving for value addition of native wetland fiber; intensive kitchen gardening for year-round nutrition and surplus sales; tree sapling nursery raising to meet local agroforestry demand; vermicompost production for bio-conversion of organic residues; Azolla cultivation as a protein-rich fodder supplement; improved fodder varieties for livestock feed security; scientific poultry management for efficient layer and broiler production; biofloc fish farming for water-efficient aquaculture in limited space; garment production for home-based micro-enterprise; and oyster mushroom cultivation on paddy straw with post-harvest value addition. Training is delivered in hands-on batches of around 30 participants at SEVAI’s Kalanjium Centre in Amoor and at K.N. Palalayam, Pettavaithalai, where trainees master the full production cycle, input sourcing, quality control, and basic market linkages. As of May 2026, 739 women and men farmers have completed the program and many have established their own units with bank credit, integrating these enterprises into crop cultivation, cattle rearing, and vegetable production. The impact includes improved household nutrition, additional cash flow, better school retention for children, and stronger collective action through joint liability groups. Running in parallel, SEVAI’s Agroforestry component supports tree integration with crops and livestock to enhance soil health and farm resilience. With the project running through December 2026, SEVAI provides continued handholding to connect trainees to inputs, markets, and peer networks—converting underutilized farm resources into sustained livelihoods and measurable gains in rural well-being.🥉Govin 🥉
