If vampire/romance movies are made for teenage girls and zombie/horror movies are made for teenage guys, then Warm Bodies is the crossover movie. Yes, Warm Bodies, the Zombieland-style horror/love story by writer/director Jonathan Levine. This is Levine's followup to his 2011 cancer dramedy and critical hit 50/50, but it's a much different film, and pretty decent for what it tries to do.

I went to see it with a friend on a Tuesday afternoon. Suffice it to say, the theater was near-empty except for a young couple seated directly in the middle. From the opening scene in Warm Bodies, I must admit I was a little annoyed by the film's overly-sarcastic style of humor. It's just not my thing. However, the one lady in the theater seemed to enjoy it. So there's that.

That's not to say the film isn't well made; it is. Especially in its direction and cinematography. At first, I felt that some of the logic behind the character's choices and what they were able to do in this zombie-infested post-apocalyptic world gave way to a few "yeah right" moments. Then I stopped and realized I'm watching a movie about people living in a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic world. Suspend all disbelief, check.

The film follows a 20-something zombie named R (Nicholas Hoult). He spends his days wandering around an airport, "lived in" by other zombies. He has thoughts, too. Cohesive ones. And we get to hear all of them through narration, which is where the majority of the sarcasm comes from.

On the other end of the spectrum, we meet apocalypse-survivor Julie (Teresa Palmer). Sent on a scavenging mission with her friends and a few weapons, they set out to gather up various supplies to bring home to the heavily-guarded city in which she lives, run by her hard-nosed military father (John Malkovich). Unfortunately for them, they run into a group of zombies, including R.

From this point on, the film changes into something completely different. When R ends up falling in love with Julie and saving her from his zombie friends, he brings her back to his pad, set up nicely in an abandoned airplane. Over time she begins to see that he's not like other zombies; he doesn't want to kill her. Forget everything you knew about zombies, check.

Of course, I'm leaving out some major plot twists. At the time, these twists may seem unreasonable and ridiculous, but given the end goal of the film, you'll see that they actually make sense. This is more of a light-hearted fairy-tale than a gruesome zombie-flick.

All in all, this quirky, undead love-story is a very interesting take on zombies. Though the genre didn't need a makeover quite yet, it got one with Warm Bodies, and ends up being much better than expected.

It appears that the boy has found a great friend, one that is capable of shooting missiles from his fingers and carrying the boy on trips around the world. Naturally, this is short lived as the earth is soon invaded by horribly destructive aliens from who knows where. This will test the strength of their friendship. Will the robot hero risk everything, including his friendship with the boy to protect the earth? Will they even be successful?
At first it appears as if the robot will be successful and protect the earth from the invading monsters, but all is not well. The invading monster is made from a highly explosive material, and if he is shot, the entire earth will be destroyed. So shooting the alien dead is not an option for our powerful robot hero. He must respond to the global threat with drastic measures indeed.
And in a sad tale of self sacrifice, the robot grabs the monster, and carries him deep into the depths of space, where he will pose no risk to the innocent inhabitants of the earth. The boy, of course, is without a friend, he he has gained a valuable lesson in courage. Sometimes you must go to great sacrifices to save your friends, even to the point of sacrificing your own life. If you would like to watch a thrilling movie with a profound moral message, look no further than "Voyage Into Space."

Movie Review Battleship (2012)

While watching Battleship, you'd think it would be hard to forget that the movie is based on a Hasbro board game. But with a surplus of enormous explosions, mechanical beasts, swimsuit models, hip hop singers, and giant spinning orbs of doom, it's easy to mentally substitute a thousand prior films as inspiration rather than the iconic strategy game. Perhaps it's difficult to envision new territory in alien invasion movies, but Battleship so generously borrows from predecessors (and even video games like Halo), that it's a wonder the filmmakers bothered to credit the title's source at all. Unfortunately, while the film takes numerous themes, plot points, and design choices from its brethren, it doesn't adopt the requisite endearing protagonist. Our hero is stubborn, brash, arrogant, and vapid - not good traits for someone we're supposed to root for. You can't even cheer for the aliens as they possess even less personality.

When his older brother Stone (Alexander Skarsgaard) convinces him to join the Navy, reckless Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) finally has a chance to straighten out his life. Though his headstrong ways continually find him in trouble with Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson), Alex is determined to marry his superior's daughter Sam (Brooklyn Decker). His plans are interrupted when a foreign spacecraft lands in the Pacific Ocean and the battleships participating in the RIMPAC maritime exercises are sent to investigate. When it's discovered that the alien vessel belongs to a hostile race of invading extraterrestrials, Alex must band together with his fellow mariners to save the world from total annihilation.

Why is this film based on the Battleship game? Hasbro certainly doesn't own the rights to the word "battleship." And this film has absolutely nothing to do with the game, save for a contrived scene in which alien vessels are tracked by red blips on a large display. Although it's unoriginal to say, Battleship is essentially Transformers in the water, filled with the same level of visual nonsense, thundering noise, copious effects shots, and walloping chaos and destruction. One could also compare it to last year's Battle: Los Angeles but without the realism, or District 9 without the political commentary. It's bad enough that the aliens themselves are so hopelessly conventional - what happened to the stunning uniqueness of monsters like those in Independence Day? There's also the theft of Harold Russell's role of Homer Parrish (portrayed by a real life soldier who lost both of his hands in a training accident) from The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) - replaced here by a legless marine played by Gregory D. Gadson. The life-asseverating tone (along with actual navy veterans, accouterments, and munitions) seems awfully out of place (and even a touch disrespectful) considering the abundance of nutty alien invasion hullabaloo (dubbed by the government as an "extinction level event") substituted for believable wartime reenactments.

The filmmakers are under the impression that every action, every line of dialogue, and every second of computer-generated imagery represents the most awe-inspiring, adrenaline-rushing adventure ever to hit the big screen. Unfortunately for them, they're utterly wrong. The amount of generic material and stereotypical sequences is staggering. Brotherly love, camaraderie, Hopper comically messing up sensitive situations with tactlessness, psyching up in the mirror, a closely matched sporting event, wise elders gaining respect for combat maneuvers, patriotic music, a young child impressed by rank, a sexy girl on the beach, the courting of a leader's daughter, military footage, a rebel who won't play by the rules, a nerdy scientist who must conduct at least one feat of bravery, a tough female trooper spouting rallying chatter - every nuance, every reaction, every verbal exchange is so formulaic that Battleship seems to be compiled from every big blockbuster from the last five years. At least the navy has some impressive toys.

Trust the treatment you wrote before starting to write a script and let your story flow. Let your story spill out onto the page. I've heard of people that tried to make their first draft perfect. I was one of those. I was making little to no progress on my script because I got caught up on each scene and line. There I was agonizing to make my script as perfect as it could be on the very first draft. Looking back it sounds funny because what is perfect in life? The definition is wide open.

When I wrote the scripts for Consignment and In With Thieves I was able to make it past the hang up of striving for perfection on the first draft. In fact I went the opposite way. I never went back to read over what I wrote the day before. I kept going until I was done with a first draft. I knew the first draft of the script was going to have a lot of problems that would need to be worked out through rewrites, but I wanted to get the story on paper to see the big picture.

Once I read through the first draft I develop a much stronger feel for the story, script, and movie playing in my head. Work on the second draft would be at more detailed pace then the first and so on. When I finally get to the draft that I think is good as it's going to get I put it out of my mind for a few days. Then I come back to it with a fresh perspective. It's amazing what stepping back does for your creative perspective when writing a script.
