Derek Elley:
John Boyne's almost unfilmable novel about a young German kid's-eye view of the Holocaust gets a solid, ultimately powerful translation to the bigscreen in Brit helmer Mark Herman's The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. Though the story's p.o.v. is fresh, with a darkly ironic flavor, the film looks to be a tricky commercial proposition, as it's neither a pic for tykes nor a large-scale WWII crowdpleaser. Result is likely to enjoy modest returns among upscale auds and those unaffected by Holocaust-movie burnout.

Boyne's 2006 novel, which deliberately gave no clue about its content on the dust jacket, depends to a large extent on a trick that's impossible to replicate in a movie. Centered on Bruno, the young son of a concentration-camp commander, it's written in a faux-naif style, and from a knowing third-person viewpoint rather than that of the kid himself.

The peppering of childish observations and nicknames ("Out-With" for Auschwitz, "the Fury" for the Fuehrer) further enhanced the book's theme of a young boy being led by his family into a world he has no understanding of.

Herman's script wisely doesn't try to replicate the book's tricks or its prose style. Instead, it cuts back much of the book's dialogue -- especially in the scenes where Bruno befriends a young Jewish inmate -- in favor of building a child's-eye view of the world. It's also blessed by a marvelous performance by 11-year-old, London-born Asa Butterfield, in his first major role, who perfectly evokes the main character's naivete without ever becoming cute.

Story opens during the early years of WWII in summertime Berlin (adequately repped by Budapest), as the family throws a party to celebrate the promotion of Bruno's dad, Ralf (David Thewlis), to an unnamed job. Eight-year-old Bruno (Butterfield) doesn't want to move "to the countryside," even though he's told it will only be "until the war is won." But apart from his sulk, the atmosphere at the party is relaxed and happy, the only sour note coming from Grandma (Sheila Hancock), who's critical of her son's elevation within the Nazi Party.

Film maintains its vagueness about time and location as the family travels by train through some pretty countryside en route to their destination -- a handsome, neo-Bauhaus home, surrounded by a wall, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Father's "work" is never shown, only referred to obliquely, and the only shadows are cast by worried looks from Bruno'smother, Elsa (Vera Farmiga), and Bruno's observation that the local "farmers" in the distance all seem to be wearing "pajamas."

When pressed, Father tells Bruno his work is "for the good of the country" and he's "trying to make the world a better place." To keep Bruno and his elder sister, Gretel (Amber Beattie), occupied, he arranges for a stern tutor, Herr Liszt (Jim Norton), to come by.

Opening half-hour has some of the best stuff in the movie, walking a precarious line between black irony and showing the war from a totally German viewpoint, without tipping over into gallows humor or parody. Main plot kicks in when Bruno steals out of the house and goes right up to a wire fence where he meets a boy his age named Shmuel (Jack Scanlon), who's also wearing "pajamas."

At this point, the film (like the book) has to reveal its hand. However, as the central conceit can only be maintained in a movie for a much more limited time, the script sensibly pares the novel's over-descriptive dialogue between the two kids.

Use of an almost all-Brit cast -- with Yank Farmiga falling into line with the accents -- gives a comfy, almost Masterpiece Theater feel to the movie that's initially unsettling, with thesps' body language and delivery distinctly un-German. That apart, perfs are nicely calibrated; Thewlis is especially good as the businesslike father prone to angry outbursts, Farmiga largely gets by on troubled looks and glances, and Rupert Friend is chillingly cool as a handsome blond lieutenant whom Gretel falls for.

Production values are smooth at all levels, with James Horner's score reserving its biggest punch for the horror-show finale.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is the rare animated sequel that reps a notable improvement on its predecessor in every department. Lively and quite funny without being obnoxious, this follow-up smoothly mixes the original's New York Zoo escapees with a number of engaging new characters they encounter upon crossing from Madagascar to the mother continent. With the first film's creative team intact, this DreamWorks Animation franchise has been well tended to, meaning it's reasonable to assume a repeat of the earlier outing's $533 million worldwide haul (an unusually large percentage of which came from overseas).

Picking up where the story left off back in 2005, the tale has the group of misfit Gothamites preparing for a desperate, Flight of the Phoenix-like journey back to New York in a makeshift flying machine to be launched by giant slingshot. As before, there are twinkle-toed lion Alex (voiced by Ben Stiller), sassy zebra Marty (Chris Rock), neurotic giraffe Melman (David Schwimmer) and voluptuous hippo Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith) -- all anxious to get back to Manhattan, haphazardly piloted by their fellow refugee penguins and accompanied by wacky lemur King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his flunky, Maurice (Cedric the Entertainer).

But after a crazy flight, the plane makes it, not to Central Park, but to a glorious savannah populated by creatures such as the coddled protags have never seen before -- their own kind, living in the wild. Not only that, but Alex is quickly recognized as the long-missing son of the local pride's chief, Zuba (Bernie Mac). While the other animals mix with their own kind for the first time, Alex treads into The Lion King territory with a rite of passage that will grant him full status, only to be sabotaged by an evil pretender to the throne, the vain Makunga (Alec Baldwin).

Banished, Alex eventually regroups with his buddies and courts danger by leaving the reserve to restore the dwindling water supply. The environmental message is agreeably soft-pedaled in favor of some truly mad antics involving King Julien's attempt to appease the water gods by presiding over a sacrifice into a volcano.

In fact, all moments of burgeoning sentimentality are short-circuited by irreverence and humorous one-upsmanship -- everything is fair game, in often unpredictable ways. The first Madagascar grated due to the seldom restrained hysteria of the characters and an overall in-your-face aggressiveness that has periodically marred DreamWorks Animation fare. Here, even as the comedy has been cranked up several notches, the tone of the sequel has been smartly refined: The slapstick is inventively bumptious rather than gross, the innuendo suggestive instead of lewd, the verbal sparring more clever than crude. This may have something to do with a new writing collaborator, Etan Cohen, for writer-directors Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, but the upgrade is noticeable.

The four-leggeds have occasional run-ins with hunters and tourists, and none among the latter is as mirth-inducing as a take-no-prisoners old granny (Elisa Gabrielli) who takes it upon herself to singlehandedly uphold the combative reputation of New Yorkers with some fearsome martial-arts turns.

Among the other ace newcomers are Baldwin's scheming Scar equivalent, out to thwart Alex, and a two-ton Lothario out to romance Gloria, drolly endowed with basso profundo intonations by songmeister will.i.am, who nicely handles scoring duties with Hans Zimmer.

Spreading the comic wealth around are Cohen, whose lemur monarch is now given sufficient screen time to emerge as memorably nutty; and the penguins, especially boss Skipper (co-helmer McGrath), who takes charge in every situation, and at one point is forced to compromise with monkey union negotiators over benefits.

Another enhancement is the film's look. Even for computer animation, the colors are particularly rich, with effort obviously expended to achieve magic-hour light on the African wilds. Team hired ace cinematographer Guillermo Navarro as a consultant, which may account for the unusually pleasing compositions as well as some impressive moving camera shots.

One small continuity error: Paw birthmarks, resembling the outline of the African continent and shared by Alex and his father, are prominently featured in some scenes but are not present in others.

The Basics: Should you play basketball or should you act and sing in the school musical? Should you be a brainiac nerd or should you breakdance? Should you make a crème brulee or should you play basketball with the guy who wants to act and sing in the school musical? Should you, the school’s lone male non-hooked-up-in-a-relationship-with-a-cute-opposite-sex-person, wear the pink plaid pants with the pink mini-fedora or should you contrast the pink plaid pants with the gray argyle vest and black mini-fedora? And will it all go well with the knee-high boots? Should you just forget all of those questions and start dancing and singing some more about how much you love to dance and sing? Answer: Yes.

What’s The Deal: Dear Seven Year-Olds, This movie is for you. You know it. Your parents know it. Everyone knows it. But I think it’s time you knew something really important. And it’s kind of a secret we’ve all been keeping from you, but you’re nearly in the third grade now and you’ve probably already heard way worse things. No, it’s not about Santa Claus. He’s real. You’re going to get lots of presents from him really soon. The thing is this: real-life high school is a brutal nightmare from which you may not soon recover. I recommend the following films to acclimate yourself to this harsh fact: Heathers, Over the Edge, Carrie and Elephant. It won’t be easy to accept at first, but you’ll get used to it. You’ll have to eventually. Just remember, you’re not all in this together. You never were. You never will be. Sorry to be the one to have to say it, DW

What Good Reasons, Besides Ancillary Revenue Stream Considerations, Were There To Make the Jump From TV to Theatrical Release: Well you’d hope that the musical numbers would be bigger and cooler, and visually they mostly are. More dancers, flashier sets, more wacky costume changes, a chance for Zac Efron to roll around in one of those rotating room sets. It’s just that someone forgot to tell the songs that they were supposed to be as good as the art direction and the choreography. And without songs as good as “We’re All In This Together” from the first movie or “What Time Is It” from HSM2, this one just comes off like an overgrown TV movie with nothing much to offer. There's even a song simply called "High School Musical." If it were a musical about chocolate chip cookies it would be like all the cookies got together to sing a song about how they were chocolate chip cookies.

Not To Be Dismissed: The original film, simply called High School Musical., was, as kid’s programming went, almost revolutionary in its pushing of a no-boundaries-to-self agenda. It actively told children that they didn't have to be boxed in and labeled. It presented a world where everyone loved each other for their quirks and differences. It’s an aspirational fairy tale and kids need those. But by the beginning of this one, you realize that the first movie’s utopian dream is already crushed and that, however nice they are, the conflicted kids of that backstory are now the kings and queens of the school and every other student is their adoring fan-base. Not cool.
