You probably heard about Le Cirque du Soleil, which has been producing impressive live shows around the world.

Le Cirque du Soleil means ‘Circus of Sun’ in French; it is a major Canadian entertainment company described as a contemporary circus. Two street artists named Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier founded it in 1984. Since 2008, 2 investment companies ‘Dubai World’ own 20% of this entertainment business. However, because of the 2008 global recession that also brought financial problems in Dubai, it has been stated that Laliberte may be looking for new partners in order to reach the company’s goals. In November 2010, Acadamy Award winner and Director James Cameron honored Guy Laliberté with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Le Cirque du Soleil distinguishes itself from traditional circuses, as it doesn’t show any types of animals; this company focuses mainly on comedians and talented acrobats. Today, the company counts more than 4000 employees including more than 1000 professional reconverted athletes. Although the company constantly has 9+ shows touring around the world, it also includes 10 permanent shows based in Las Vegas, Orlando, Tokyo, and Macao (with seasonal shows in New York City).

The company also participated to private as well as corporate events such performances for Royal families and the 2007 SuperBowl.

In 2010 only, 11 million tickets had been sold; the Vegas shows were over 97 per cent occupancy and brought in around 60 percent of revenue. The production was financed with a $50 million fund raised by private investors from the US and Canada. Revenues for 2010 were $850 million!

In 2011, it was announced that Le Cirque du Soleil had performed to over 100 million spectators in more than 300 cities.

In a questionnaire reported by Forbes, 57% of the U.S population attends at least one live entertainment event each year and 85% said that they heard of Le Cirque du Soleil. In addition, a hedge fund offered Laliberté $1 billion cash for a 50% stake and he clearly refused to take the offer.

Today, Guy Laliberte, 52, is #11 fortune of Canada with a net worth of $2.6 billion and became the first fire-breather in space in 2009!

MDNA World Tour

You probably already heard or read about Madonna's new tour called: MDNA. Madonna's last 'Sticky & Sweet Tour" grossed over $400 million with a total of 85 shows in 32 countries gathering 3.5 million fans.

Sticky & Sweet Tour became the top-grossing concert tour by a solo artist of all time! It is also number 4 when it comes to solo/bands combined after U2 (360 Tour), The Rolling Stones (A Bigger Bang Tour), and AC/DC (Black Ice World Tour).

On May 31, 2012, Madonna kicked off the MDNA World Tour in Tel Aviv, Israel through the world's largest concert promoter, Live Nation Entertainment.

The MDNA Tour is promising and is expected to set a new record in ticket sales. The show has been personalized depending on the country where the performances are given.

Madonna is the inspiration of many new artists such as Lady Gaga. You definitely heard about the critics regarding Madonna's hit "Express Yourself" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" which appeared to be similar. For this reason, Madonna decided to add to MDNA Tour's song list a mash-up version of these 2 hits, dressed as a marching conductor. On top of that, at the end of this mash-up, Madonna closes the song with the chorus of one of her last tracks saying "she's not me."

On July 14, Madonna gave a huge performance in 'Le Stade de France' (Stadium of France) in Paris for the Bastille Day.

On July 18, it was announced that Madonna added a new date in Paris for July 26 at the mythic venue called L'Olympia. The show was also diffused on streaming through YouTube.

Tickets were available for purchase on the afternoon of the announcement and went sold out in a few hours causing the venue's website an anomaly because of the large amount of tickets sold to fans.

For the first time in her career, Madonna performed in the United Arab Emirates and will also perform in Scotland, Ukraine and Colombia.

The MDNA Tour will end on December 22, 2012 with a total of 88 performances around the world.

WORLD MUSIC DAY

Summer is around the corner! Isn’t very exciting?

I asked my friends how we should celebrate the first day of summer on June 21^stbut nobody really seemed as excited as I am!

I got the opportunity to explain to my American friends how the first day of summer is important in our culture!

In the French culture, the first night of summer, which is also the shortest night of the year, rhymes with festivity but more importantly, music! It is called "Fete de la Musique" (referred as "The World Music Day").

On June 21, 1982, the minister of culture invited the people to go out and gather in the street to play, sing and dance during 30 short minutes from 8.30PM to 9PM. At that time, 1 million people gathered for this first edition.

30 years later, the World Music Day is become a tradition that the majority of French people attend every year (or at least try to). The principles have not changed; a big free party, open to everybody, and especially to amateurs, welcoming without distinction all genres of music.

It is usually organized in outdoors places; big cities usually close the streets or build stages in parks, public squares, but you can find performances on restaurants' terraces… In other words, you just need to wander around the city and you will definitely end up dancing and celebrating with any person you would run into!

Today, more 100 countries celebrate the World Music Day with one rule: Free Music!

In the United States, only a few cities participate to this music celebration. In 2007, I have been invited to this event that took place at the French Embassy of the New York City and included many famous French faces; a year later, a big ball was organized on Times Square. It is now getting more commonly known as Make Music New York.

Where will you be on June 21? If you are in a big cosmopolitan city, you should definitely check on the Internet if anything is happening around the corner of your street.

I found this amazing visualization that was published on the British tour operator Thomson.

This is an interactive map visualizing the evolution of Western music since 1800 and today!

It shows the appearance and the inter-influence of popular genres such as jazz, soul and disco, which were born from multiple sub-movements and musical movements (traditional African music, calypso, Christian hymns, etc.). The map is accompanied with an interactive timeline to see the places and dates of the birth of musical movements; it also gives us the ability to trace some musical genres’ journey.

Music has been around for a very long time, probably even before the time of its first historical traces. In this world, there is no civilization that, sooner or later, has not developed it own music system; many of them adapted some genres from other cultures but modified them for their own needs and tastes.

Did you ever learn about the history of music? Do you know anything about its origin?

At its creation, music had NO rules!

It was in China that the first music theory traces have been found. Experts were able to determine that those traces appeared around 10 centuries before Christ. This music is inseparable from poetry and dance; for sages it expressed some wise balance between heaven and earth. A music scale had been invented, consisting of five notes, which took place every fifth in ascending fifth, starting with fa. Each note had a symbolic value: the first was a prince, the second a minister, etc..

Long after, there appeared another seven-note scale; it is similar to the one we use today. Both scales are still used in China.

For centuries the Chinese only used these 5 notes scales (pentatonic), all based on the 12 notes of the chromatic scale, eg: F sharp, G sharp, A sharp, C sharp and D sharp.

Today, music is most definitely indispensable for anyone!

Eminem's former label, FBT Productions, sued Universal Music over digital royalties.

FBT Productions signed Eminem in 1995; later, Eminem joined Universal Music. FBT productions agreed to receive a 12% royalties on "record sales." At that time of the contract, the digital royalty (involving platform such as ITunes) was unclear, leading Eminem's former label to argue that digital royalties should be considered as licensing and not "records sold." FBT Productions' argument was rejected in March 2009. However, in september 2010, a federal appeals court overruled the decision by entitling FBT Productions to 50% for "all recordings licensed to digital distributors."

I agree with the decision of the federal appeals court. The contract was signed at a time when attorneys could not have imagined innovations such as iTunes and other digital platforms; therefore, these terms were unclear and not well-defined in the contract. I think it is fair that FBT Productions receive a 50% royalties for recordings licensed. By taking this argument to court and appeals court, FBT Productions have win a 2000's update for their contact.

Universal VS. Grooveshark

In november 2011, Universal Music Group filed an important lawsuit against the online music stream Grooveshark (parent company being Escape Media Group). Universal is seeking damages for infringement by claiming that Grooveshark illegally uploaded more than 113,000 songs on their online platform supposedly pirated by Grooveshark's employees (although under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act).

On the other hand, Grooveshark only had a licensing deal with EMI; the other major labels, Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Group, followed the suit in january 2012 in order to collect their royalties.

Universal is seeking damages for up to $150,000 per song; the total could be up to the ridiculous amount of $17.1 billion.

I think it is an interesting case and I cannot wait to discover the final verdict of this litigation, however it would be fair for Grooveshark to pay royalties/licensing to record labels but a lot of investigation still has to be done. On top of that, damages claimed by records labels are outrageous. As of today, no court date has been set for the lawsuit. I personally used Grooveshark as well as its direct competitor, Spotify, with the purpose of listening online streaming music.

The Supreme Court case is ASCAP v. United States, No. 10-1337

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) is a not-for -profit organization that license more than 390,000 composers, songwriters, lyricists and music publishers; it is one of the biggest with BMI. In 2011, ASCAP argued in appeals court that the download of musical work should fall within the law of public performance. Moreover, ASCAP also argued that digitals downloads were also public performance and therefore, copyright owners should also receive a percentage of sales. The appeals court in New York rejected ASCAP's argument and the ruling was: "Music is neither recited, rendered, nor played when a recording (electronic or otherwise) is simply delivered to a potential listener"

ASCAP tried to take the case to a Supreme Court but was unsuccessful after the court's rejection.

Royalties are the main revenue streams for many artists, therefore I understand that ASCAP want to enforce its copyrights. I think the Supreme Court should not have rejected ASCAP's case as it is a federal and important issue with today's new technology, involving tools such as the internet giving easy access to digital downloading.

All artist managers’ have a similar goal: to pitch their artists with the purpose of giving a boost to the talents’ careers.

Managers have important duties and responsibilities such as creating schedules and planning activities, as well as negotiating different types of contracts. Most importantly, the relationship between the artist and the manager is crucial in this business; the artist must be able to trust his/her manager and the manager has to strongly believe in his artist.

Over the past years, many young artists started their careers having a family member as manager. It is clearly easier for some artist to trust a parent rather than someone outside of the family circle.

It is also a risk to involve a family member, especially when it comes to business.

One the most powerful celebrities and accomplished artists in the world, Beyoncé Knows, has been managed by her father, Mathew Knowles, since her beginning as a teen. Mathew Knowles started managing his daughter for 15 years, since her debut in the multi-platinum selling band The Destiny’s Child; he also managed the trio’s solo albums after the group separated.

In early 2011, rumors started on the Internet throwing that Beyoncé had ‘broken up” with her father. However, in March 2011, their publicist stated that it was a ‘only business move’ as well as a mutual decision.

After gaining experience and having learned from her manager and father, Beyoncé thought about taking care of her own career; she directed for the first on her videoclip “Single Ladies.” Today, she manages herself with the help of her husband Jay-Z; rumors say that Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Company manages her, but no deal has been announced.

The month of February is around the corner and many of you are very impatient. I am not talking about you, Ladies, with your unavoidable Valentine’s Day but to our basketball and football fans.

The Super Bowl is the finale of the championship game of the National Football League that determines the champion team of each football seasons. The Super Bowl is the biggest TV event in global sport and one of the most watched television broadcasts. Moreover, the audience seems to continuously increase from 97.5 million in 2008, 98.7 million on 2009, 106 million in 2010, to 111 million in 2011!

The Super Bowl killed the record of the most watched TV broadcast that the finale of the comedy M*A*S*H hold since 1983.

It’s been reported that advertisers are willing to pay up to $3 million for a 30-second commercial during the game, the highest ever!

Madonna will perform for the halftime act of the game with Le Circle du Soleil.

This year, The Super Bowl XLVI will occur in Indianapolis, IN in Lucas Oil Stadium on February 5^th! Do not miss it!

The NBA All-Star Game is an annual game opposing the best players of the Eastern Conference against the best players of the Western Conference; it is also commemoration of their season’s achievement. Being from France, basketball and American football are not a big part of our culture; the French national sport is soccer, mostly like all other European countries.

According to The Billboard, the year of 2011 has been an important boosting year for the live music business.

Would you like to know which artists made it on top of the list?

The band U2 has accomplished the highest grossing tour in 2011 by generating $293,281,487 with 44 sold-out shows and attracting more than 2 millions fans!

On top of that, the three years 360° Tour turned out to be the highest grossing tour of all time by breaking The Rolling Stones’ prior gross record of 558 million for the A Bigger Band Tour (2005-2007).

The 360° tour generated $736,137,144 in more than 30 countries around the globe attracting an audience of over 7 millions between 2009 and 2011.

Monsieur Bon Jovi has been ranked #2 for 2011!

Bon Jovi has a financial total gross income from The Circle Tour of $192,947,951 with a total attendance of 1,851,385 participants. The number of shows sold out and performed by Bon Jovi is higher than U2’s. Bon Jovi performed a number of 68 shows and selling out all 68, compared to U2’s 44 out of 44 shows. However, U2 with less sold outs and performance acts, managed to gross more revenue and number of participants.

Why Are We Happy?

I found a pretty interesting storytelling video on TED.com responding to this question.

This is a great speech for you all who are pursuing happiness!

Daniel Gilbert earned a doctorate degree in social psychology from Princeton University in 1985; he also won a Guggenheim Fellowship and the Phi Beta Kappa teaching prize for his work at Harvard. Gilbert believes that, in our ardent, lifelong pursuit of happiness, most of us have the wrong map.

Gilbert explains us that there is two form of happiness: synthetic happiness and natural happiness.

“Natural happiness is what we get when we get what we wanted, and synthetic happiness is what we make when we don't get what we wanted.”

For example, he proved his point by doing many experiences such as a lottery winner and a paraplegics, Jim Wright (former chaiman of the House of Representatives), Moreese Bickman (who spent 37 years in Louisiana Penitentiary for a crime he didn’t know commit), or Harry Langerman who was on of the first persons to be interested in getting a franchise from the McDonald’s brothers, hospitalized patients and also Harvard students…

One the points that Gilbert is communicating to us is that positive or negative outcomes have less impact, less severity and less extent that people expect them to have.

You could clearly tell that Gilbert had the attention of the audience by his deep involvement and a passion that he is sharing with others.

I find this speech to be inspiring because Gilbert tells us that happiness is not a thing to be found. We tend to find a way to be happy with what’s happened, but we do not know that about ourselves which sometimes can lead a disadvantage. I honestly believe that having strong bounded ambitions guides us toward a joyful work. Although we know that we will always chase for more, Gilbert made me understood that bounding our fears and our ambitions is essential key to pursue happiness.

The International Live Music Conference (ILMC), is an annual meeting consecrated to live music businesses around the world.

In the past, artists released their albums in order to promote their touring acts; today they go on tour with the purpose of promoting their albums.

It mainly promotes live music events in its owned operating venues; Live Nation also produces and sells operators for live entertainment. The firm owns around 135 live entertainment venues internationally, including amphitheatres, theatres, clubs, arenas and festival sites.
The largest producer of live concerts in the world, Live Nation annually produces over 20,000 concerts for more than 2,000 artists in more than 45 countries. The company has paid hundreds of millions of dollars to the most acclaimed performers in return for exclusive rights to release their recordings, promote their concert tours and sell merchandises bearing their name or image.

In 2006, Live Nation acquired House of Blues
In October 2007, Live Nation signed a $120 million deal for 10 years with Madonna: “to virtually handle all the aspects of her music career from concert promotion to image licensing ” by taking over her contract after Warner Music Group.
The firm sold its North American theatrical business to Key Brand Entertainment for $90.4 million in beginning 2008.
The company signed a deal for $152 million with Jay-Z in 2008 for the next 10 years, including Jay-Z’s own entertainment venture, live shows, tours and future recordings.
In March 2008, Live Nation and U2 signed a 12 years deal for approximately $100 million, including "sponsoring, band’s merchandises, and official website." U2 grossed over $700 million while touring for 'The 360 Tour.'

In 2010, Live Nation merged with Tickermaster to form Live Nation Entertainment becoming the world's leading eCommerce company. Live Nation's website welcomes more than 26 million visitor every month.

Finally, during summer 2011, Universal Music Group, one of the biggest music company, announced they will be forming a joint venture with Live Nation Entertainment to manage artists.
