Just to make sure things get extra muddled for fans, this latest saga, The Last Hope, is an Xbox 360 exclusive. Don't let the system hopping deter you.
Despite some rough pacing and a story that could be told in a much more engaging manner, tri-Ace and Square Enix's latest RPG holds together quite well thanks to some action-packed gameplay. Those who have been starved for a solid Japanese role-playing game in recent months will find a lot to like here. The Last Hope is a prequel saga, laying the groundwork for the previous three games.
There is no knowledge needed of those past entrants to the franchise to enjoy this game, but you will recognize a few nods towards the future if you're in the know. This game details mankind's first steps into space after World War III has left Earth's surface inhospitable. It all picks up after a quick rundown of the devastating war with the introduction of the main character, Edge Maverick, and his childhood friend, Reimi Saionji. These two are members of a select group that will scour the galaxy in search of a new homeland for humanity. They are, in effect, our last hope now that Earth has been ravaged. Of course, things don't go smoothly from the opening faster-than-light jump and the two are quickly thrust into a series of events that finds the search for a new home planet a small problem in the grand scheme of things.
You'll have to deal with arch-demons, characters getting poisoned in battle and turning green, and unguarded chests filled with goodies in the most random of locations. And you'll get to do it while playing as a band of merry young heroes, led by a wide-eyed fellow with spiky blond hair, on the cusp of adulthood who still have so much to learn. In other words, don't go into Star Ocean expecting a revolutionary game. This is very much a traditional JRPG that fans of past entrants to the franchise, or past Square Enix games in general, will feel right at home with. The themes of this tale -- friendship, evolution and growth to name a few -- are pounded home with bluntness and tempo that can be off-putting, particularly when you consider that cutscenes can last upwards of 30 or 40 minutes. The story isn't necessarily bad and there are a few genuinely tender moments towards the end of the game, but the way it is delivered through extended scenes that feature stiff and overdramatic animations, unnatural dialogue, and a tendency to restate the same plot development several times mute its strengths. Some of these long cutscenes feel needlessly drawn out and only amplify one of the biggest problems with Star Ocean: Pacing. Dungeons, if fully explored, can take hours to complete. These are then followed by story segments that seem to last forever. The delineation between gameplay and storytelling couldn't be more distinct which is in stark contrast to the overall direction of game design these days. None of this would be as noticeable if you could save anywhere you wanted but that option isn't present.
Star Ocean: The Last Hope uses the outdated save point system where you can only back up your progress at predetermined places. While I find a compelling story, delivery, and character evolution to be critical to the overall experience in a JRPG, their shortcomings in Star Ocean: The Last Hope are not large enough to spoil the overall game. That's all thanks to the combat and leveling mechanics, two aspects that had me completely engrossed and kept me coming back for more. The action is all real-time with the option to pause and issue specific commands and you won't run into any random battles.
Fights do take place on a separate battle arena that you warp to upon running into a monster, but you'll have complete control over your combatant throughout the fight. The rest of your squad (up to four of the eight members can be brought into battles at one time) is controlled by AI, but you are free to swap from one character to the next at any time during the fight. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses, allowing you to shape a team to your specific style of play quite easily. A few new additions have been added to the formula for this outing, including a jump ability that lets you dodge attacks or swoop around behind enemies for a blindside strike.
For me, the craziest part about Star Ocean: The Last Hope is that I was still excited about fights at the end of the game after battling through thousands upon thousands of baddies. With the Bonus Board -- a reward system for finishing off enemies in specific ways during fights -- I found myself power leveling in tough dungeons just to continue improving skills and unlocking new ones. Even at level 70, my squad still has room to grow and is continuing to unlock new symbology spells and special attack arts. There is a lot of depth to the character building that, combined with the great combat, really sold me on Star Ocean. This isn't the sort of game where you'll level up and just watch a few stats increase, then rinse and repeat.
Alongside that standard is a complex item creation system, the ability to combine weapons and items to make more potent equipment, a great deal of optional skills that you can purchase and improve, and more. Though each character holds a preset role and can only equip specific equipment, I still found that there was quite a bit of hands-on building and management of the squad to be had. And if you fall into that hardcore category, you'll likely take solace in the knowledge that you'll have to play through the entire game multiple times to see everything.
Beat the game once and you'll unlock a harder difficulty. Beat that to unlock the ultimate mode. You can carry all of your collection data (Battle Trophies are back and boy are they ever numerous) over from one play through to the next -- something you'll have to do if you want all of the achievements. But the best reason to play the game a second or third time is to see the different endings.
The Private Action system, a series of optional story sequences that help to flesh out characters and determine which game ending you see, which you may remember from Star Ocean: 'Til the End of Time, is back here in a more accessible form. The last Star Ocean game was notorious for forcing players to do lots and lots of backtracking, wasting hours wandering the game at specific times to get Private Actions and collect other hidden goodies. There is very little back tracking in The Last Hope at all and most of the Private Actions can be done on board your starship, the Calnus. With this streamlined approach and the Private Actions emphasis on relationships between characters, the whole system feels like a rudimentary form of what we saw in Mass Effect.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope Cheats, Codes, Hints, Tips Unlockable: The Wandering Dungeon Defeat Gabriel Celeste in the Cave of the Seven Stars to unlock The Wandering Dungeon. Find Barago at the Old Road to Sanctuary and he'll show you the entrance. This dungeon is randomly generated and has no save / restoration points. The boss, the Ethereal Queen, is on the 20th floor, but the dungeon continues infinitely.
Unlockable: Secret Dungeon After beating the game, return to your final save and go up the stairs and into the door on the left. Here you'll fight the Undying Dragon -- beat it and you'll receive the Darkness Ring. In the Colosseum in Tatroi, head to the glyph on the wall in the left hallway on the first floor. A true villain lets his minions do his work for him, which includes pillaging, looting, and even knocking back the odd tankard of ale. You'll begin the story with access to the brown minions, who are your basic fighting types with access to many types of weapon and armor. As you progress through the game, you'll regain control of other minion types. The fiery reds are immune to heat-based damage, and can fire off a powerful ranged attack. The greens are immune to poison, and are able to launch powerful attacks from stealth. The blues are magic-immune healer types, able to bring other fallen minions back from the dead.
he real success in Overlord comes from the interactions that can be had between the minions and the rest of the world. Sweep your horde over a table with a few pints of beer and the minions will drink it and then empty their bladders with a maniacal chuckle. Give them access to a pumpkin patch and they'll tear it to bits and create sweet helmets to wear. The minions are animated well, even though the overlord looks a bit stiff, and watching them smash and interact with their surroundings is a joy.
Since you have to control both the dark overlord and his minions at the same time, control can get a bit frustrating at times. The left analog stick directs the overlord, while the right offers more precise control over your minions. This leaves no room for the camera, which becomes primarily controlled by the game itself. You can swing it back around behind your overlord and are also afforded the luxury of switching to a more overhead view of the action by clicking the right thumbstick, but neither of these solutions works exceptionally well. The camera is an issue, particularly when you go into one of the many small tunnel portions of Overlord and attempt to control the minions in any way that requires precision. The camera is never so bad that the game is unplayable and with practice you can get used to it, but it still presents more frustration than it should.
With four types of minions that each possesses their own unique abilities, Overlord is primed for some fancy puzzles. For the most part, though, the game shies away from forcing gamers to use their brains. Most of the game is in fact a trial in collecting enough minions and directing them forward to overwhelm obstacles or enemies. We did come across a decent number of puzzles, but these are few and far between. When the puzzles do exist, they aren't so difficult due to problem solving. They're difficult due to camera and control issues. In fact, much of the thinking in Overlord comes from being lost as you try to figure out where to head next. An in game map would have greatly reduced this issue, but then the game would be about as straightforward and linear as they come.
And getting lost in the world is one of the best parts about Overlord. The detailed environments, clever missions, and quirky inhabitants are all as interesting as they are visually appealing. Exploring the world as you seek to improve your dark tower and please your mistress (Good or evil, it's your choice as to which to take home. Bonus!) remains interesting for hours on end, even though the puzzle design isn't the most intriguing. There's a lot packed into Overlord that all encourages completists to have a go at nailing every optional task.
Overlord is a visually, and for the most part, aurally pleasing game. The visual style feels ripped straight out of Fable with a healthy dose of The Lord of the Rings thrown in for good measure. The dwarves, elves, and Sauron-esque overlord aren't particularly original, but Codemaster's take on them is. There's a great deal of voice acting that is done quite well, though it could have been coded a bit better. Most non-player characters (NPCs) have speech triggered by your character crossing a specific point on the ground. Walk past a vendor and he asks if your minions are for sale. Cross paths with an NPC in one village and he'll decry his leader. It sounds nice the first time, but if you're lost (and you often are) you'll walk past the same NPC numerous times in short order making the single line of dialogue shift from funny to annoying. Still, Overlord does not disappoint the eyes and ears.
On top of the sufficiently extensive and deep single player mode are several online multiplayer options. There's a co-op survival test and two versus modes. These play fairly similarly to the campaign except for the ever present enemy overlord vying for resources through strategy and upfront attacks. Unsurprisingly, compared to the single player game these online features feel light and unsatisfying. I encountered a significant amount of lag while playing online too, further hurting the experience.
Overlord
ESRB rating: T (Teen)
Publisher: Codemasters
Developer: Triumph Studios
Available: PC and xbox 360

Fable II

Fable II (games for Xbox 360) begins more than 500 years after the events of the original. You don't have to know a thing about the first Fable to enjoy the sequel, but there are numerous references to the past. There are plenty of surprises waiting for those fond of the first Fable; consider it a reward for having played the original. In Fable II, you play as a new character – either male or female – who begins life as a street urchin and eventually becomes savior of Albion. The main story is brief and has little in the way of plot. It's about as basic a hero's tale as can be fashioned. It's the atmosphere and elements outside the main storyline that prove most rewarding.
Coming along for the journey is your dog. If you're a cat lover, this may not be the game for you. A dog is a hero's best friend, as we all know, and your dog is no exception. He loves you unconditionally. You can scold him all you want, leave his wounds unhealed, or never pay him any attention whatsoever. It doesn't matter. You are his master and he will always be on your side – even if you're a total jerk. Play with your dog or give him treats and you'll probably feel better about yourself. Either way, your dog is a welcome ally. He's your pathfinder, sniffing out treasure chests and hidden items, warning of approaching danger, and tearing at the throats of fallen enemies. You may never give him a single kindness, but by the end of Fable II, you'll have become completely reliant on his abilities.
he dog is a success. I can't say that you will fall in love with your dog and keep a special place in your heart for him even after the disc's stopped spinning in the drive, but some will. And the rest can at least appreciate a canine companion who is helpful and almost never gets in the way or acts as a nuisance. You never control the dog. It acts independently and wisely. And though, on occasion, you may see him walk through a closed door or witness the textures on his fur disappear, he is a well-crafted pet.
Your dog is not your only navigational tool. There is also a golden breadcrumb trail that (usually) points in the proper direction for your next quest. Instead of taking up a chunk of screen real-estate with a mini-map, the breadcrumb trail fits nicely into the scenery. It can be turned off, but that would be a mistake. The trail at first might seem like a lame gimmick, but it actually frees you up for exploration. Fable II's world is significantly larger than the original and is packed with secrets to discover. There are 50 silver keys to collect, 50 gargoyle statues to destroy, nine Demon Doors to be opened, and a half-dozen magical statues with mysteries to solve. Also, there are whores to screw.
If you take the time to explore, you'd discover Albion is an interesting world with some really odd characters in the mix to lend personality. Lionhead moved away from the storybook look of the original, settling on a grimmer world. While areas around Bowerstone are lush and beautiful, many of the later areas such as Wraithmarsh and Bloodstone are depressing. Even in Bowerstone, there is a distinctly Dickensian feel. Dickens, by the way, not the most uplifting of writers. The charm and whimsy of the original is lost in Fable II. Modernity encroaches on fantasy.
Fable II
ESRB rating: M (Mature)
Publisher: Microsoft
Developer: Big Blue Box Studios

Overlord II

Games for : Xbox 360 PC, PS3
Overlord II
The basic game is still the same, with the player assuming control of the Overlord and his small army of minions, guiding them through environments full of enemies and puzzles in a tongue-in-cheek campaign of evil. But if you had fun or even kind of liked the first Overlord than the sequel should be right up your alley, as the new story and small (but pretty awesome) set of new features and tweaks make it fun enough to mostly overlook the technical problems and the occasionally terrible checkpoint system.
It may be called Overlord II, but the minions once again steal the show and make what would otherwise be a mediocre third-person adventure game great. The last Overlord met a rather un-lordly demise and this new one, who looks and acts pretty much exactly like the last one, is groomed to take up where he left off. Ostensibly, he's the baddest mother around and pure evil, but with a Teen rating by the ESRB you can be sure that everything in this game is rather tame. Instead of blood and true carnage, Overlord II offers cartoon violence and some British wit. And though you're supposedly bad, you wind up playing the hero against a greater evil.

In the overlord's absence, a couple of new factions have arisen that need dealing with. There's the magic-hating empire, modeled after the Romans, which will throw tightly structured legions at your horde. And then there are the stereotypically offensive effeminate elves, modeled after PETA. These guys are out to protect all of the light magic creatures of the world. Together, these factions pose quite the challenge for the new overlord.

The key to the Overlord's success at dominating the land lays in a horde of little critters he controls known as minions. The game begins with just a few of these minions at your beck and call, but by the end you'll have dozens in four flavors, each with its own set of strengths and weaknesses. The browns are the bruisers, perfect for a frontal assault. The reds can toss fireballs that can clear barriers or strike enemies out of your reach. The greens and blues can do stealth attacks and swim, respectively. Each has its own role and will be featured in its own section of the game. These minions are the heart and soul of the game. Watching them tear through towns, grabbing anything within reach to wear as a helmet is quite hilarious. Their mannerisms and animations are what give Overlord II its personality. These guys are the equivalent of having a troupe of gremlins at your beck and call--and there's no Gizmo in sight to ruin all of the fun.
The minions also do your dirty work here. The Overlord is a bit of a wimp and can't take much punishment so in order to keep him in one piece you'll have to sweep dozens of little minions out to do the fighting. This is done either by targeting an enemy and sending them out en masse, sweeping them out by using the right thumbstick to directly control your group, or planting a target marker to keep them in one strategic location. The first Overlord game featured a lot of puzzle solving and careful maneuvering of your minions. While that is still present here, the sequel focuses more on simple action and combat.
Overlord II
ESRB rating: T (Teen)
Publisher: Not Available
Developer: Triumph Studios
Available: Xbox 360 PC, PS

Ultimate Alliance | Marvel

Marvel Ultimate Alliance (Available: Xbox 360 PC, GBA, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox)
Marvel Ultimate Alliance (Captain America, Thor, Wolverine and Spider-Man, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, etc) is every comic-book fan's dream come true. It features 20 heroic icons to play as -- from popular crews such as the X-Men and Fantastic Four, but also some more obscure stars like Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel. In turn, they battle a potpourri of evil that's even more varied. A thin but intriguing storyline attempts to tie it all together, but it's the inside jokes and pop-culture references where the writing really shines. However, in games like this, the story is just a conduit between maps full of button-mashing combat anyway.

As the game begins, we find the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier under a huge offensive from Dr. Doom, and Nick Fury has no other choice than to put out a distress signal to any superhero in the area. Enter our starting lineup of Captain America, Thor, Wolverine and Spider-Man, complete with their distinct personalities and powers, all at your command. As you progress through the game, your travels will take you through heaven and hell, and from the ends of the earth to the far reaches of the galaxy, all in the name of saving the day in an epic story that remains compelling throughout.
Gameplay is exactly what you'd expect from a dungeon crawler: lots of hack-and-slash action with plenty of enemies and boss fights to plow through. Using a team of four heroes, it's up to the player to save the universe from another one of Dr. Doom's nefarious schemes. Melee combat uses three buttons (heavy attacks, light attacks and a grapple function) to pummel the enemy into submission. However, the real treat in combat comes with the special attacks that each hero has. Using the right trigger button, you can launch a flurry of special attacks that are unique to each hero. Spidey hurls web balls at his enemies, while Daredevil uses his batons. Ghost Rider has his chains at his disposal, and Cap can throw his shield at any foe in his path (and in Cap's case, you can manually control the shield, should you desire).
Another great feature is that each character has their own style of fighting that fits their traits from the comics. Spidey relies on speed, using a flurry of kicks and punches when he's out of web fluid. Wolverine is the brawler of the bunch, unleashing devastating attacks, with one special attack where he pounces on his victim and stabs them several times before backing off. With every enemy that you defeat and every team combo that's pulled off, a character's momentum will increase, eventually allowing you to perform momentum attacks, which act as finishing moves, dealing out heavy damage and clearing the battlefield of most enemies. Naturally, if you use these during fights with well-known villains of the Marvel Universe, you won't be seeing a one-hit kill, but you'll certainly dish out some heavy damage.
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
ESRB rating: T (Teen)
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Raven Software
Also Available: PC, GBA, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Xbox

Call of Juarez

Call of Juarez (XBOX 360) takes place in Texas in 1882. Billy is framed for the murder of his mother and stepfather, and his uncle Ray, a reverend (who oddly resembles the Saint of Killers from Garth Ennis' "Preacher"), takes off his collar, dusts off his six-shooters, and takes the good book out on the road in a quest to avenge his brother. How, you might ask, does a hardened man of the cloth suddenly run out with a Bible in one hand and a gun in the other and go on a killing spree? We're still trying to figure that one out ourselves.

Ultimately, you'll take on the roles of both Billy and Reverend Ray through fifteen levels of first-person, gun-blazing action. Each has his own different abilities; Reverend Ray can not only snap out quick-draw shots, but he can use the Holy Book to stun some of the opposition with his hellfire and brimstone sermons before he splatters their repentant feelings onto the terrain.

Billy has a whip and bow that he uses for stealthier missions. The whip also doubles as a means of traversing areas by swinging from trees, and the bow is a reusable weapon; after gory kills, he can reclaim arrows from outlaw corpses. While Reverend Ray's levels feel like straightforward FPS action (with more reloading and that weird Bible-stun, of course), it's in Billy's levels that CoJ really shows its flaws. Using the whip to traverse chasms tends to result in trial-by-death situations more often than it works; even the first episode of the game results in a great deal of frustration. Even riding a horse is unwieldy, annoying, and just not very much fun.

Eventually, as Billy fights to discover who killed his family, and Ray gets closer to hunting him down, new gameplay dynamics come into the fold. Both characters have Concentration Mode. The way it works is that you'll disarm yourself by hitting down on the D-pad, waiting for an icon in the lower-right to flash; next time your character unholsters his guns, the action will creep to a halt ala bullet time. It's a nice feature, but the issue is that Techland hasn't really hit the sweet spot with it. Were it too conservative, we'd gripe that it's not used enough. Unfortunately, the designers were a tad too liberal with it, and you really only need to disarm for a few seconds before you're shooting people in lots of ouch-worthy places via slo-mo. Billy's bow even has Concentration Mode built into it, which just feels too cheap. It's indicative of the problems that Call of Juarez faces; on one hand, gunplay is too easy, and on another, getting around certain obstacles is downright frustrating.
All's not a total wash, however. With Techland's emphasis on physics in the environment, you'll also get to do some fairly cool stuff, like shoot oil lamps to start fires. Indeed, one of CoJ's Achievements will find you setting outlaws ablaze around the midpoint of the game.
Call of Juarez
ESRB rating: M (Mature)
Publisher: Not Available
Developer: Techland (Poland)
Call of Juarez Also Available: PC
RPG

The Elder Scrolls IV | Oblivion

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Xbox360 rpg.
Bethesda's much-anticipated fantasy action RPG Oblivion is every bit the game it promised to be, with stunning visuals and vast amounts of engrossing, well-designed gameplay. Lovers of its predecessor Morrowind will be delighted; new addicts will find it as easy to play as it is to like. The only problem with Oblivion is putting it down.

If you played Morrowind, you'll find many aspects of Oblivion's character system familiar. Both at the game's start and throughout your character's development, you'll see the same themes -- Oblivion takes the flexible, level- and skills-based system from Morrowind, makes a few delicate cuts and simplifications, and delivers a streamlined system that's flexible and easy to grasp.

Taking your first steps into Oblivion's outside world, which you'll do about half an hour into the game, you could be forgiven for adopting a certain look of slack-jawed astonishment. Screenshots don't do this engine justice -- seeing it in motion will impress the most jaded of gamers. Sumptuously detailed and full of vivid, rich color, it puts even the most graphically detailed of FPSs to shame, let alone the rest of its typically drab genre. Even after many hours of play, you'll still find yourself looking around in awe at a particularly dramatic view, or captivated by a morning glory plant climbing a wall.
Although it's a staggering-looking game, nothing's perfect. Oblivion is a little heavy-handed on the bloom effect, which tends to underline the fact that the game's faces are decidedly on the ugly side. If you're really picky, you'll notice characters can't always move around each other and end up nudging each other with an unrealistic sliding motion. But out of doors it's nothing short of stunning. Oblivion shows off the 360's potential in a way that no other game has done.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
ESRB rating: M (Mature)
Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: Bethesda Softworks
xbox 360 RPG games

Fallout 3| Xbox 360

Play the new game :
Fallout 3 nails its colors firmly to the mast. Fresh out of the vault where your family took shelter from a nuclear holocaust, you find your way to a small town, cobbled together from scrap and built around an unexploded nuke. The sheriff soon offers to pay you to disarm the bomb; moments later, a smartly-dressed stranger offers you considerably more to rig it to explode, wiping out the town and its residents. Either choice resonates throughout the rest of what's easily a 40-hour game. Which will it be?

Although it's firmly couched in its often tongue-in-cheek 1950s sci-fi mythos of a war-devastated D.C., Fallout 3, with its frontier towns, roaming bandits, and hostile environment, has a curious Wild West atmosphere. Its story, which sees you searching for your Liam Neeson-voiced father, is compelling, but plays second fiddle to the joy of just poking around the expansive wilderness in search of quests, the many convincing supporting characters, or scrap to assemble into improvised weapons.
One typical problem of games that offer such open-ended experiences is that when they break, they break badly, in a sort of Wizard of Oz moment that reveals the lever-puller behind the curtain in drastic fashion. Yup, Fallout drops the ball on occasion, and the beiges and grays of its shattered versions of the White House, Washington Monument and surrounding miles do wear on the eyes eventually.
The mere fact that that's a criticism speaks volumes about the game's staying power. Not only will you be glued to the game right up to the end, you'll go right back and play it through again just to see what consequences different choices will produce. Fallout 3 is a technical triumph, but more importantly, it's a beautiful piece of design, exploring the well-trodden video game ground of good vs. evil better than any other game to date. It's not so much a morality play as it is a morality playground, and in proud showbiz tradition, it just leaves us wanting more. If Fallout 3 is life after the apocalypse, then bring on the bombs.
Fallout 3 Also Available: PC, PC, PS3
ESRB rating: M (Mature)
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

Developer: Bethesda Game Studios
Role-Playing games

Console Wars

Buy Nintendo, Xbox Or Sony PS?
Console Wars
... Despite early predictions that 2008 would be the year Sony regained momentum in the bitter video game console wars, it turned out to be false hope. Industry leader Nintendo stayed ahead of the pack all year, thoroughly dominating both the home console and handheld hardware markets with their Nintendo Wii & Nintendo DS systems, respectively.
According to NPD Group, Nintendo flat-out owned the all-important month of November by selling over 2 million Wiis, better than twice as much as the next closest competitor, Microsoft's Xbox 360 (836,000). And at over 1.5 million DS systems sold, Nintendo tripled the output of Sony's PSP (421,000). While those numbers weren't nearly that high through most of 2008, the general order, Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony held strong throughout.
But this was hardly a banner year for Nintendo in terms of software. The biggest games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and of course Wii Fit -- came relatively early in the year, and their biggest holiday release, Wii Music, has been labeled something of a dud. Miffed that the company was focusing too heavily on catering to its relatively new mass-market audience, the usually loyal Nintendo fans complained about a lack of core games. Meanwhile, Microsoft and Sony enjoyed a wealth of blockbuster games all year long, including top-sellers Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3. So how did Nintendo compete, much less lead the way?
By finding a new niche, of course. While gamers lament the deluge of cheaply made games (dubbed "shovelware") aimed at capitalizing on the Wii's mainstream popularity, many of those titles speak to their broad audience and support the company's new directive. Nintendo knows on which side its bread is currently being buttered, and while Microsoft and Sony battle for the hearts and minds of the core gamers, Nintendo is content getting their moms to play, too. And their moms often have a lot more money.
Microsoft, on the other hand, found itself in second place by keeping its eyes on the prize: core gamers willing to shell out for great downloadable content. The recently released "New Xbox Experience" system update has nearly tripled sales over Xbox Live Arcade, while huge releases like Gears of War 2 and Fable II cemented their status as the go-to console for most gamers.
As the newest kid on the block, Microsoft is less concerned with catching Nintendo than they are with kicking Sony's butt, which is pretty much exactly what they're doing. Take, for instance, the November NPD numbers for Activision's best-selling first-person shooter, Call of Duty: World at War. The 360 version of the game sold an impressive 1.4 million copies, over twice that of the PS3 version (597,000). It's hard to play catch up when you're getting beaten that badly.
As for Sony (PS3), well, they just can't catch a break. The company scored a major coup when Blu-ray officially trounced HD-DVD in the hi-def format war, but few believe the technology will catch on with consumers. Strong sales of big-time exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 were promising, but the troubled launch of their 'Home' network coupled with relatively weak holiday sales (only Resistance 2 cracked the Top 10 list in November, all the way back at number 9) cramped their style. The Xbox 360 case is a silvery white color, but the unit accepts swappable face plates, available in a variety of colors and styles.
The front of the console player features two slots for memory cards and two USB ports. No physical controller ports are required, as all Xbox 360 controllers are wireless. The standard Xbox 360 controller is similar in design to the "S"style controllers manufactured for the original Xbox, though the "black" and "white" buttons have been moved to the spine of the device, as triggers. A globular, greenlit button on the center of the controller offers gamers quick access to the console's builtin user interface, which is similar to the original Xbox's "dashboard" but far more extensive. The standard Xbox 360 controller is manufactured in silvery white plastic, to match the console.
Xbox 360 uses a threecore, IBM designed processor that runs at 3.2GHz and is protected by a watercooled heatsink. The machine's graphics processor was designed by ATI, and features 10MB of imbedded DRAM. The unit has 512MB GDDR3 RAM, which is shared by the CPU and the graphics processor. A portable, 20GB hard drive attaches to the back of the console.
this console is backward compatible with the most popular games for the original Xbox, and the machine can also play standard DVD movies and audio CDs, and read MP3 sound files and JPEG image files. The 360 is designed for easy LAN connections to contemporary Windowsbased PCs, and an available remote control device supports the console's "Media Center"style functions.

Xbox 360 games : Lord of the Rings (LOTR)

The Lord of the Rings Games for Xbox 360: The Battle for Middle-earth II for the Xbox 360 Command the epic battles of Middle-earth? from your living room couch in The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-earth II for the Xbox 360 .The Battle for Middle-earth II for the Xbox 360 is the first game in The Lord of the Rings series that will be playable over Xbox LIVE. Xbox first released on November 15, 2001 in North America. The Xbox was initially developed within Microsoft by a small team which included game developer Seamus Blackley. Microsoft repeatedly delayed the console, which finally emerged at the end of 1999 following interviews of Bill Gates. Gates said that a gaming/multimedia device was essential for multimedia convergence in the new times of digital entertainment.

On March 10, 2000 the "X-box Project" was officially confirmed by Microsoft with a press release. Ed Fries was responsible for all game development on the platform. Mitch Koch was responsible for sales and marketing and all three reported to Robbie Bach. This team was also primarily responsible for Microsoft's follow-up product, the Xbox 360.

Sega

Sega was originally founded in 1940 as Standard Games (later Service Games) in Honolulu, Hawaii, by Martin Bromely, Irving Bromberg, and James Humpert to provide coin-operated amusements for American servicemen on military bases. In 1986, Sega of America was established to take advantage of the resurgent video game market in the United States. Sega would also release the Sega Master System and the first Alex Kidd game, who would be SEGA's mascot until 1991 when Sonic the Hedgehog took over.

Sega Corporation is a multinational Japanese video game software and hardware development company, and a former home computer and console manufacturer.

The company has had success with both arcades and home consoles, but in early 2001, it left the consumer console business and began concentrating on software development for multiple platforms.Sega's main offices, as well as the main offices of its domestic division, Sega Corporation Ota, Tokyo, Japan. The PS History, according to the book "Game Over", by David Scheff, the first conceptions of the PlayStation date back to 1986. Nintendo had been attempting to work with disk technology since the Famicom, but the medium had problems. Its rewritable magnetic nature could be easily erased (thus leading to a lack of durability), and the disks were a piracy danger. Consequently, when details of CDROM/XA (an extension of the CD-ROM format that combines compressed audio, visual and computer data, allowing all to be accessed simultaneously) came out, Nintendo was interested. CD-ROM/XA was being simultaneously developed by Sony and Phillips. Nintendo approached Sony to develop a CD-ROM add-on, tentatively titled the "SNES-CD". A contract was struck, and work began. Nintendo's choice of Sony was due to a prior dealing: Ken Kutaragi, the person who would later be dubbed "The Father of PlayStation", was the individual who had sold Nintendo on using the Sony SPC-700 processor for use as the eight-channel ADPCM sound synthesis set in the Super Famicom/SNES console through an impressive demonstration of the processor's capabilities....
In 1989, the SNES-CD was to be announced at the June Consumer Electronics Show (CES). However, when Hiroshi Yamauchi read the original 1988 contract between Sony and Nintendo, he realized that the earlier agreement essentially handed Sony complete control over any and all titles written on the SNES CD-ROM format. Yamauchi was furious; deeming the contract totally unacceptable, he secretly canceled all plans for the joint Nintendo-Sony SNES CD attachment. Indeed, instead of announcing their partnership, at 9 a.m. the day of the CES, Nintendo chairman Howard Lincoln stepped onto the stage and revealed that they were now allied with Philips, and were planning on abandoning all the previous work Nintendo and Sony had accomplished. Lincoln and Minoru Arakawa had, unbeknown to Sony, flown to Philips headquarters in Europe and formed an alliance of a decidedly different nature,.. one that would give Nintendo total control over its licenses on Philips machines. The 9 a.m. CES announcement was a complete shock. Not only was it a complete surprise to the show goers (Sony had only just the previous night been optimistically showing off the joint project under the "Play Station" brand).

End of 1992, Sony and Nintendo reached a deal whereby the "Sony Play Station" would still have a port for SNES games, but Nintendo would own the rights and receive the bulk of the profits from the games, and the SNES would continue to use the Sony-designed audio chip. However, at this point, Sony realized that the SNES technology was getting long in the tooth, and the next generation of console gaming was around the corner: work began in early 1993 on reworking the "Play Station" concept to target a new generation of hardware and software; as part of this process the SNES cartridge port was dropped, the space between the names was removed, and the PlayStation was born.

PlayStation series of console and hand-held game devices: PS one (a smaller version of the original), PocketStation (a handheld which enhances PS games and acts as a memory card), PlayStation 2, a revised, slimline PS2, PlayStation Portable (a handheld gaming console), PSX ( for Japan only) (a media center, DVR and DVD recorder based on the PS2), and PlayStation 3.

Nintendo

Nintendo started as a small Japanese business, based in Kyoto, the business produced and marketed a playing card game called Hanafuda. The handmade cards soon began to gain popularity, and Yamauchi had to hire assistants to mass produce cards to keep up with the demand.Nintendo's first step into the video games industry was to secure the rights to distribute the Magnavox Odyssey in Japan, which it did in 1975. At the time, home video game consoles were extremely rare, even the seminal Atari PONG console had yet to be produced. Nintendo's first video arcade game was 1978's Computer Othello; a large handful of others followed in the next several years, Radar Scope and Donkey Kong being among the most famous of these.

In 1980s saw Nintendo's video game division (led by Yokoi) creating some of its most famous arcade titles. The massively popular Donkey Kong was created in 1981 with Miyamoto as its mastermind, and released in the arcades and on the Atari 2600, Intellivision, and ColecoVision video game systems (although Nintendo itself generally had no involvement with these early console ports). This release method would be used on several later Nintendo arcade games of this same period, including the original Mario Bros.In addition to this arcade and dedicated console game activity, Nintendo was testing the consumer handheld video game waters with the Game & Watch.
