Nirmala Srivastava (née Nirmala Salve, more widely known as Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi) lived from March 21, 1923 to February 23, 2011.

Early life

Nirmala Srivastava was born in Chindawara, India to Christian parents Prasad and Cornelia Salve. Her parents named her Nirmala, which means "immaculate".She said that she was born self-realised. Her father, a scholar of fourteen languages, translated the Koran to Marathi, and her mother was the first woman in India to receive an honours degree in mathematics.Nirmala Srivastava said she was descended from the royal Shalivahana/Satavahana dynasty. The Salve surname is one of a number included in the Satavahana Maratha clan.

Nirmala Srivastava passed her childhood years in the family house in Nagpur. In her youth she stayed in the ashram of Mahatma Gandhi. Like her parents, she was involved with the struggle for Indian independence and, as a youth leader when a young woman, was jailed for participating in the Quit India Movement in 1942. She studied at the Christian Medical College in Ludhiana and the Balakram Medical College in Lahore.

Shortly before India achieved independence in 1947, Nirmala married Chandrika Prasad Srivastava, a high-ranking Indian civil servant who later served Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri as Joint Secretary, and was bestowed an honorary KCMG by Elizabeth II. They had two daughters, Kalpana Srivastava and Sadhana Varma. In 1961, Nirmala Srivastava launched the "Youth Society for Films" to infuse national, social and moral values in young people. She was also a member of the Film Censor Board.

Sahaja Yoga

Nirmala Srivastava was known to have been concerned with the damage being done to society by false gurus. Interviewed in the movie "Nirmala Devi: Freedom and Liberation", Nirmala Srivastava said that these supposed spiritual people were greedy and promiscuous rather than spiritual and that this caused her to give up hopes and begin searching within herself.

Nirmala Srivastava said that while in Nargol, on May 5, 1970, she witnessed the rising of the Primordial Kundalini. Later she described the experience as follows: "I saw my kundalini rising very fast like a telescope opening out and it was a beautiful color that you see when the iron is heated up, a red rose color, but extremely cooling and soothing." She stated that the potential for all humanity to gain spiritual self awareness was realized at this time, which she characterizes as a "historical process of en-masse self-realization and inner transformation". Soon after she founded Sahaja Yoga in Mumbai.

For a child, enjoyment is complete. Whatever he sees, he makes a joyful thing out of it. Look at children. I've seen children, they find anything, they make a joy out of it. ... You see, they find anything, any space, they make a joyful thing from it, a play for them. For them life is also a play. Just a thing of enjoyment. And they make you also enjoy everything. If you are not in a good mood, they'll come and behave in such a manner that you'll have to come round and become a very simple, natural person. So to see a simple, natural person, we always say they are like children. It means they do not understand the cunning. They do not understand the stupidity of the people, they live in a world of innocence.

Children are the most interesting things, I think, in the world. For me roses are very beautiful, but children are the most interesting thing, and they teach you so many things that you are surprised at their innocence.

H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi marg inaugurated in Sethi Nagar, Ujjain

On the eve of Adishakti Puja on Sunday, the 7th June, the city of 'Mahakal' -Ujjain, witnessed the beginning of a new era; where in a 300 meters strip of the road leading to the Sethi Nagar Sahaja Yoga Meditation Centre was named after our most holy Mother as "H.H. SHRI MATAJI NIRMALA DEVI MARG".

In the afternoon, the road was finally laid open and inaugurated by Kalpana didi (The daughter of our Holy Mother). Among other dignitaries present in the occasion were Collector of the State, State Minister, Trustee Members of India Sahaja Yoga and other State Coordinators. There were around 500 People who attended the function.

In her brief address Kalpana didi expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the resident, collector and Ujjain Sahaja Yoga collective for undertaking this noble work. Referring to the unique constructional design of the road connecting two colonies as a link, Kalpana Didi said that uniqueness of this road plays a great significance as it has the confluence of two roads joining two different Colonies. She quoted a beautiful lines from Shri Mataji’s teaching that meant that one always should learn to be together, have love for each other and be collective to undertake collective work as it invites inevitable success in all works of life.

The inaugural function concluded with singing National Anthem by all present there.

Later, in the evening the Collector of the State hosted a dinner in the honour of Kalpana Didi and the Ujjain Sahaja Yoga collective.

Change - Transforming

Don’t do anything, just go into thoughtless awareness. Try to go to the thoughtless awareness. If you can get into that condition of thoughtless awareness, you can do your job because that’s the point where you are with the truth, with the reality, with the joy. … If you are in thoughtless awareness, what happens to you is that you get the confidence, complete confidence of divinity. You know you have it. …

It’s very important to become thoughtlessly aware because then there are no thoughts coming from the left or the right, from the past or the future. Just in the present you are there. It’s something you all have. It’s not that I’m saying that to you, but all of you have this, but steady yourself. You have to steady yourself at thoughtless awareness. How long - that’s not the point. The point is once you’ve touched it, you’ll go on touching it. … It is always described in all the great books, but not so clearly as I am telling you. … Even for a second, if you get it, it’s a very good idea. Then you go on increasing that second. …

So today’s message is that while you are meditating, go into thoughtless awareness. No thought is important because it’s your own creation. But if you have to become one with the divine creation, you have to get to that state of thoughtless awareness, minimum of minimum. And that comes to you gradually if you grow and you’ll be amazed how you’ll be able to grow into Sahaja Meditation in a very big way.
