GamerBytes noticed that both Double D Dodgeball and Doom have vanished from Microsoft's downloadable games service.

The circumstances surrounding Doom's sudden removal seem fairly evident; after Zenimax purchased the game's original developers at id Software last year, the Activision-published XBLA title was practically living on borrowed time already. It's not quite as clear why Double D Dodgeball was pulled, however.

Those of us who already spent our hard-earned Microsoft points on Doom or Double D Dodgeball should have no trouble re-downloading either game from Xbox Live. With that said, no new purchases can be made from here on out.

On the plus side, they'll never be able to take away that copy of Doom 64 you've had squirreled away since middle school.

We already know that Microsoft is preparing to invest big in marketing and promotion for Kinect, but now we're learning more about just how much investment went into the device's creation as well. The New York Times reports that the first prototype for Kinect cost Microsoft a whopping $30,000 to build. The iterative process of bringing it to market involved 1,000 workers handling different aspects. So when you're plunking down $150 for Kinect, a price at which Microsoft states it will turn a profit, you could remind yourself that those hard-working people gave you a $29,850 discount.

Microsoft is bullish on Kinect, stressing its differences from other devices on the market. Joel Johnson of Gizmodo remarked that it's "the first thing out of the consumer side of Microsoft in a long, long time where they are in front of everyone else." The article also clarifies that if the device can't tell the difference between two players (like identical twins wearing the same clothes), it simply asks players to identify themselves. We'll be trying it out in the office soon, so stick around for our impressions.

Source

StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm - Concept Video

Over the weekend at Blizzcon in Anaheim, California, Blizzard confirmed what many gamers hoped: there will be a StarCraft II DOTA map. Following the announcement, Blizzard Entertainment's Rob Prado was asked what he thought of Valve's surprise DOTA strategy.

"To us, that means that you're really taking it away from the Blizzard and Warcraft III community and that just doesn't seem the right thing to do," Pardo told Eurogamer. "It just seems a really strange move to us that Valve would go off and try to exclusively trademark the term considering it's something that's been freely available to us and everyone in the Warcraft III community up to this point."

One of the most popular free game mods in the world, DOTA is a custom scenario developed using the World Editor in Blizzard's 2003 RTS, WarCraft III: Reign of Chaos. Unlike traditional RTS games, DOTA players focus on leveling up powerful heroes with unique abilities rather than resource management and base building.

Two weeks ago, Valve officially unveiled DOTA 2, promising to "take the unique blend of online RTS and RPG action that has made DOTA popular with tens of millions of gamers and expand upon it in every way."

The folks at Blizzard aren't the only ones surprised that Valve, a developer famous for its commitment to its own community, would try to corner the market on DOTA. Riot Games, the developer behind action RTS League of Legends, also argues that DOTA should belong to the community. The company went so far as to file a trademark for "Defense of the Ancients" to prevent Valve from taking complete control over the brand.
According to Eurogamer, the new game is to be revealed "soon" and is a story-driven action-adventure title.

To shoot down the obvious predictions, it will not be another God of War and it won't be for PSP, either -- Ready at Dawn co-founder and creative director Ru Weerasuriya claims that Ghost of Sparta (pictured above; look for our review later today) is "our last PSP game."

As for the new project, he explained, "I love playing story-driven games. I love movies. I love things that involve me from start to end and give me a complete experience. That's where our heads are. It's definitely that kind of game we're going to make. We're not going to go off and make an open world, or an MMO, like everybody expects ex-Blizzard people to do. We know what we'd like and we know what we're good at."

When Eurogamer mentioned that it sounded as if it was a game like Uncharted 2 being worked on, Weerasuriya responded, "It's the kind of game we're going to make. I'm just glad they did it first. It should prove to everybody it's doable and it's worth doing that kind of stuff."

He wasn't specific about mentioning what platform it would be on, other than ruling out PSP, but did leave open the possibility for any system: "I can tell you it's going to be whatever platform our engine runs on. Right now our engine runs on pretty much anything that's available out there." Then again, we probably should wait and see about its stance on PSP, given that Ready at Dawn claimed way back in 2008 that it was done with Sony's handheld system.

With the promise of an official reveal "soon," it hopefully won't be long before we learn more about what might be Ready at Dawn's first game on consoles. Considering what it has managed to do with the PSP from a technical standpoint, it should be exciting to see what else it can come up with.

Source

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit - Video Preview

Nintendo has decided to fill us in today, issuing a press release that claims that more than 65.3 million Wii remotes have been sold in the United States alone, according to figures from the NPD Group.

Those numbers take into account more than just those sold on their own; it also takes into account 30.41 million that were included with Wii hardware and 12.92 million included with Wii Play. As for specific colors, 18.56 million of the white version have been sold separately, with 2.44 million black remotes, 467,500 pink remotes, and 465,200 blue remotes also contributing to the total. <p. 65.3="" <p="" ?that?s="" and="" angeles,="" antonio,="" chicago,="" child="" dakota.?="" dallas,="" detroit="" diego,="" enough="" every="" explain="" florida,="" for="" francisco,="" houston,="" how="" in="" is:="" jose,="" just="" living="" los="" man,="" many="" million="" new="" nintendo="" north="" of="" ohio,="" philadelphia,="" phoenix,="" remains="" resident="" san="" still="" to="" tries="" virginia="" wiimotes="" woman="" york,="">The press release also claims, "This demonstrates that Wii owners like to play and they like to play together. They're not the stereotypical gamers playing alone in their parents' basement." If you happen to fit that stereotype... well, Nintendo apparently isn't worried about offending you.

The bragging comes ahead of the release of the new iteration of the Wii Remote, the Wii Remote Plus, in North America on November 7, the same day we'll be getting both the red Wii and DSi XL bundles.

We wish Nathan would have made his presence felt in Resistance 3 aswell but ALAS!

Most would say gameplay.

"Story comes first," says Brett Rector, the producer in question. ("I'm one of the producers," he says, "but we have about twelve. It's a pretty huge job as some of us work with design, some with environment art, animators, technical artists, engineers... it's a hefty job and a pretty sizeable team.")

And he's perhaps right to emphasise the narrative, as the game mechanics speak for themselves.

Don't go expecting a wholesale reinvention of the first Force Unleashed - this is more of a continuation, but that's no bad thing, given the original's solid execution of wreaking havoc with the Force.

There are new additions, sure - Mind Trick lets you turn Stormtroopers on each other, or make them hurl themselves off mile-high ledges, and the slowly built-up 'Force Fury' meter lets you overclock your powers to a startling degree.

We saw a power-drunk Starkiller use Force Grip to pick up an AT-MP (rocket-equipped scout walker) and hurl it around with abandon, or snatch TIE-Fighters out of the sky to throw into a gleaming spire, or juggle bad guys by tossing them repeatedly against pinball bumper-style security devices.

It's intoxicating stuff, and looks glorious. But it's the story Rector wants us to appreciate.

Talking to us in London about Force Unleashed 2, Brett is good-humoured, funny and endlessly enthusiastic about his baby, which sees the main character Starkiller - Darth Vader's dead-at-the-end-of-the-first-game 'secret apprentice' - resurrected as a clone on the planet of Kamino (as seen in, er, Attack of the Clones).

The trouble is, this new Starkiller is troubled by surfacing memories of his 'old' life, and busts loose in a quest to find who he really is, which means tracking down Juno Eclipse, his old pilot and love interest.

Vader promptly lets loose Boba Fett while Starkiller scours the universe, stopping off at Dagobah for a chat with Yoda and a visit to a certain cave seen in The Empire Strikes Back.
BOBA JOB

"Story comes first," re-affirms Rector. "But the story and gameplay are there to service each other - the story services gameplay, and the gameplay services story.

But at the top of it all we just want to tell a compelling story and that's how it's always been. It's one of our tenets at LucasArts, and it's stemmed from the old days.

It's always been about a good story and good gameplay to support it! And that's especially true of this franchise." It's not exaggeration - for all the variable Star Wars games we've had to endure over the years, LucasArts have arguably always had a focus on narrative.

And given Unleashed's canonical nature, surely it must have been tempting to throw in everyone from Bossk to Bothan Spy #27 to keep the hardcore happy.

"Breaking the story is a collaborative effort," says Rector. "It started with Haden Black (soon to be the former executive producer of next gen Star Wars titles at LucasArts), who was integral to this project and the executive producer.

What we do is focus on story first, and the characters - the game should support the story, not the other way around. It's not like we take what characters we want from the Star Wars universe and say 'let's punch them in here and see where the story goes.'

Obviously, though, we have wishlists and wants, and you can make those lists all day, but then the story starts to take shape and you put these little bits and pieces in, and eventually you have your own tiny part of the Star Wars mythos!"

And although you might think that getting your own official Star Wars story approved would riddled with draconian do's and don'ts, you'd actually be completely wrong.

"Part of my job is that I work with licensing as well," continues Rector, "so I liaise with them. I was right in there, and they have to approve everything so we have to run everything by them.

And you know what? They encourage the creativity of the team. We did have the Ultimate Sith Edition of the first game and when we touted that as an Infinities (a non-canonical comic book mini-series from Dark Horse) type of storyline they were more apt to let us go that route - they were like, 'Look, this isn't canon,' and we were saying 'Yes, we know,' because we had those two endings* in the first game. So licensing keeps us in check."

THE SITH AMENDMENT
"And they really have a great respect for us as well," continues Rector. "Plus, working with Haden, who's worked for the company for twelve, 15 years... he's been there a while, and so they have a great respect for him.

They know we're going to do justice to the license and to Star Wars, and not wreak havoc on convention... not that they would allow us to anyway! It's a nice little trust there - they know we're not going to try to slip anything by them."

Star Wars in game form looks like it's remaining in safe hands for the moment, then. And in terms of being an actual playable experience, while The Force Unleashed 2 may not reinvent the Corellian wheel or drop the jaw with massive surprises, it's still inventive, action-packed and provides exactly what the seven million buyers of the first game want more of.

That we're as excited to see what happens to this Starkiller clone as we are to throw Stormtroopers around via the power of our mind speaks volumes about Brett Rector and co's dedication to telling a ripping yarn.
For years the Batman had suffered from piss-poor games that had rarely gotten close to doing the comic justice.

Arkham Asylum changed all that with its excellent graphics, great gameplay, superb voice-acting and all of those Bat toys!

Now Rocksteady Studios and Warner interactive will be taking us back to the asylum in Batman: Arkham City. Arkham City is an entire district of Gotham City that has been walled off to ensure that the criminally insane, of which we know there are many, are kept under lock and key. No longer was Arkham Asylum capable of holding these nut-jobs.

This change of locale means that this sequel will be played out in a larger more open-world environment. It will also give the player a much greater feeling of being in Gotham City itself.

Arkham City promises to bring together an even larger ‘all-star’ cast of characters and super-villains from the Batman universe. It also features new and enhanced gameplay features that will add to your Bat-repertoire.

Batman: Arkham Asylum earned second place in our 2009 Game of The Year Awards and we are certain that Arkham City will feature heavily in 2011′s run-down also.

We will bring you more information on this future blockbuster as we get it, but for now feast your eyes on the screen-shots in our gallery!

Here are a few of the highlights from the class-specific panel and the general open Q&A that followed.

World of Warcraft Class Q&A Panel

Hunters are awesome all day with their new Focus resource mechanic. A lot of Hunter players are still what WoW players derisively refer to as "huntards."

Shadow Priests are currently really heavy on burst damage, which creates a bit of an imbalance between player-versus-environment (PvE) and player-versus-player (PvP) content. Blizzard plans to address this once they've collected more data after Cataclysm launches.

With Rogue weapon specializations removed, daggers are supreme to other weapons groups, due to superior weapon speed. Blizzard's OK with this -- because Rogues use daggers, fantasy nerds -- but they may play with the mechanics down the line.

Blizzard is fine with the Warrior's Inner Rage ability staying as a passive, rather than an active, skill.

The Warlock's level 85 Demon Soul ability is designed as a nichey skill to provide a bit of burst damage capability.

The Rogue's Combat talent tree is relatively weak now, and it's getting buffed soon. The Rogue's Mastery skill will soon see a quadruple increase in effectiveness to compensate.

Hunter weapon scopes will be re-evaluated at some point; Blizzard feels they're currently pretty boring.

The Hunter's minimum attack range creates issues when groups employ strategies that involve stacking up on certain raid bosses. Blizzard acknowledges that the situation is not ideal -- but at the same time, Hunters can also do things like shoot while moving.

Where did the Paladin's holy power bar come from? Answer: It's a meaningful resource decision that doesn't gimp you once the bar's dry (AKA mana). It's similar to the thought process behind the Hunter's new Focus mechanic.

Blizzard has never considered implementing a class change feature -- leveling is pretty easy at this point, and heirloom items help to address the facilitation of alt characters.

Will racial abilities ever be a bit more normalized? Blizzard says they're fine; some races are better at PvE, some races are better at PvP. And Blizzard likes it that way.

No comment on whether murlocs will ever be added as a playable race. We can dream!

On the subject of Death Knight raid viability, Blizzard feels they're fine, and very flexible, and can act as a main tank for any raid. Bottom line: Learn to play your class well!

World of Warcraft Open Q&A Panel

An automated raid party-finder would be pretty tricky to implement, since so much care goes into class composition for endgame content.

Blizzard is looking into ways to better customize endgame characters and make their appearance more distinct.

No plans for a guild-merging mechanic. Cataclysm's guild perks and achievements should make players want to stick with their guild long-term.

Female-specific Druid forms may be a possibility in the future.

Blizzard feels Cataclysm will bring avbout a lot more interest in battlegrounds, possibly at the expense of arenas.

Talent trees will receive more tweaks as Blizzard collects data from Cataclysm players.

Blizzard wants crowd control to be a bigger deal in Cataclysm's instanced content. As PvP goes, they're trying to slow down the encounter speed overall -- which should reduce the impact of crowd control as well.

The lack of a legendary (orange) dagger is due to how few classes could benefit from using it (as Blizzard wants each individual legendary weapon to be desirable to several classes).

Blizzard's still committed to balancing classes in arena PvP combat.

No additional plans for the Mage's water elemental, but it might be up for consideration in future expansions.

The Rogue's Subtlety tree is "supremely difficult" to balance -- hence Shadow Dance's current use to allow safe energy replenishment, rather than employing it as a big damage-enhancer.

Further use of the Emerald Dream and its associated fiction is a "when" -- not an "if."

Achievement points still won't allow you to buy power, people. They're just fake points -- or, as Blizzard puts it, something of a "high score" counter.

Legendary weapons will be available to both 10- and 25-man raids. Balancing their scaling is a tricky prospect, but Blizzard wants them to stick around far longer than normal items.

More account-bound items are coming, including a guild mount.

A storage solution is incoming at some point for festival items and other collectible stuff.

Some achievements will be removed in Cataclysm, due to geography and faction changes.

Pandarens may make an appearance in the game at some point -- no clear answer yet.

Additional character slots are not on the horizon.

Sidekicking systems have been discussed, in order to address friends playing together despite large level disparities. This might be added down the line.

A tabard tab is in the works.

Raiding is kind of a big deal in World of Warcraft. If you're one of the millions of players who have hit WoW's level cap, you know that after you've filled that last bar, your means of moving up is through one of WoW's many dungeons and raids. Each new set of dungeons in the game represents new challenges as well as a new, stronger tier of loot.

At BlizzCon 2010, a panel was held that discussed the future of raids and dungeons in World of Warcraft. While it was known that the classic dungeons Shadowfang Keep and Deadmines would be redone for max level players, details of changes made to other dungeons were revealed. If you have a favorite dungeon from World of Warcraft, you might want to get as much time in there as you can right now, as changes will be wide-sweeping and in some cases drastic.

Most of the alterations are hitting the excessively long dungeons. Dungeons like Mauradon and Uldaman are being split into wings like the newer dungeons, while others like Wailing Caverns and Sunken Temple are simply having some of the larger (and frankly most frustrating) sections removed entirely. Only some of these changes will be available with the launch of Cataclysm, with the rest being rolled out in future patches.

One of the other changes, currently live on the beta servers, is likely to be far less contentious. Dungeon quests, regardless of whether they are part of a quest chain or not, will be available from characters in the entrance of the dungeon. Remember how many times you had to run Zul Farrak because the quests were in like eight different zones? Now they're not!

Also changing is the location of graveyards for players who are unlucky enough to die in a dungeon. According to the developers, no graveyard will be more than a half minute's run from the dungeon entrance, if it isn't right outside. By IGN's calculations, that will reduce the length of the average corpse-run to Blackrock Spire by eight and a half hours. We kid! We kid because we love.

Activision has confirmed to VG247 that James Bond 007: Blood Stone, the new Bond game in development at Bizarre Creations, will be released in the U.K. on November 5 -- the same day that Activision's GoldenEye remake hits the Wii and Nintendo DS.
It seems a North American date wasn't confirmed, but considering the trend is usually for North American releases to come the Tuesday before the U.K. release, then we can probably expect it on November 2.
Bizarre Creations revealed one other bit of news, although this one is on the more disappointing end of the spectrum: If you are considering purchasing Blood Stone, you won't get a chance to try it first. When asked by VG247 whether there will be a pre-release demo, game director Jeff Lewis said "unfortunately not."
Blood Stone follows an original James Bond story that mixes action, shooter, and driving elements. For more on the game, you can check out our interview with producer Nick Davies from earlier this year.
In its first week, the Wii title sold 92,000 units, well short of the previous Kirby game, Ultra Super Deluxe, which debuted with 266,000 units back in November 2008.

All may not be lost, though. Media Create's analysis of the week's sales suggests that the game could end up seeing long Mario-like sales if Nintendo actively pushes it through television commercials.

The big game for the week in terms of sales was, once again, Pokemon Black & White. With nearly 170,000 units, this is the fifth week in a row the DS title has been at number one. It has already crossed the 4 million mark and shows no sign of stopping.

Also new last week was Lord of Arcana, widely viewed as Square Enix's attempt at getting in on the popular Monster Hunter market. The PSP title debuted at 70,000 units, selling through less than 50% of stock. With God Eater Burst arriving next week and Monster Hunter Freedom 3 hitting in early December, we could be seeing our first victim of a crowded market.

Here's the full top 20 for the week covering October 11 through October 17:

Pokemon Black & White (Pokemon, DS): 168,541 (4,161,397)

From there you'll be able to download all of the necessary files in advance of Cataclysm's December 7 release. Then, come launch day, anyone who preordered from Blizzard shouldn't have to endure the usual installation and patching process.

Not only will subscribers get to play the moment the servers switch over, but they'll also be able to skip out on the whole midnight launch experience at retail. Whether that's a plus or a minus likely depends on your stance on physical media vs. downloadable games -- or how cold it is in your neck of the woods come December 7.
Source

Rock Band 3 Live Action Cinematic

Details are still sparse, but according to the Associated Press, the suspect walked into the GameStop inside the Westfield Galleria Mall in Roseville, California this morning with a can of kerosene, claiming to have a gun.

Police responded to a 9-1-1 call after the man ordered everyone out of the store and began lighting its merchandise on fire. The entire mall was evacuated as the fire began to spread to other shops.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside a storage room at the GameStop, beginning a standoff with police that lasted nearly two hours. No injuries were reported, but the suspect was treated on-scene for smoke inhalation.

The motive for the arson has not been reported. The fire was relatively contained thanks to the mall's emergency sprinkler system, and the suspect has been transported to Roseville city jail.

Source

Sony: 1 Million PlayStation Move Units Sold in Americas

SCEA president says company having trouble keeping up with demand.

Sony increased production twice, and it still can't keep up with demand for its motion-controller, PlayStation Move. That's according to SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton, who says Move has moved more than 1 million units during its first month on sale in the Americas.

After announcing last week it has sold more than 1.5 million Move controllers in Europe, Tretton reported sales in the Americas, telling Reuters that Sony is "absolutley maxed out right now" as it tries to keep the device on store shelves.

"Retail demand is incredibly strong and we're working hard to keep the product in stock," Tretton said in a statement. "We believe consumers have already shown their preference for a precise, interactive game experience. We are on target to meet our end of year goals and expect sales to increase as our publishers and developers continue to update popular titles and introduce new games."

Move recently launched in Japan, so expect more sales updates from Sony in the near future. Microsoft is set to launch its own controller-free motion capture device, Kinect, on November 4. Microsoft has stated it expects to sell 3 million Kinect units in 2010, which would put it on par with Move's more than 2.5 million in its first month.

Games for Windows Marketplace will also accept payment in both real-world dollars and Microsoft points, the demi-currency used on Xbox Live and in the Zune Marketplace. Also, games will be redownloadable on any computer once purchased.

Games for Windows Marketplace will have 100 titles available when it launches, including such recent games as Capcom's Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2. It will also have a deep catalog of classic titles, such as Grand Theft Auto III, Fable: The Lost Chapters, Max Payne, and Deus Ex. Third-party publishers such as Take-Two Interactive, Square Enix, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment are also partnering with Microsoft. The latter's massively multiplayer game Lego Universe, will go on sale on the GFW Marketplace on its launch day, as will Microsoft's upcoming role-playing game, Fable III.
