Denim is so integral to today’s fashion industry that it’s difficult to imagine it getting any bigger. But, it is. In fact, denim looks set to become an increasingly significant aspect of fashion over the next few years, and, possibly, even over the next few decades. In a recent press release, Premiere Vision announced it had “broken a new attendance record” for its Paris “Denim” show, held twice a year. The most recent Denim event took place on 25 and 26 May at the Halle Freyssinet convention center. There were 83 exhibitors, and attendance was up 18% over June 2010 and 13% over the December 2010 Denim event. According to PV, “Countries specializing in jeanswear such as Sweden and Denmark are well represented [at Denim], the United States is reinforcing its presence, and Brazil’s attendance is increasing.” In fact, international visitors accounted for nearly 70%, with people coming from 50 countries, including Italy, the UK, Germany, and Turkey.

Denim economy – think big

A good indication of the strength of denim in the fashion market over the next few years is the expansion of already-large denim and jeans manufacturers, as well as the regular emergence of new, smaller, funky denim designers. With the economic rise of China and India, the younger and more affluent of these nations are finding jeans appealing. That they are comfortable but flattering, tough but stylish, no doubt accounts for their continuing appeal both in the East and West, but, in the East, at least, jeans are also symbolic of moving into economic modernity, and becoming a player on the world stage. India currently produces 700 million meters of denim, and is set to increase its output by 50 percent in the next few years. And, Indian-based LNJ Denim, which supplies fabric to household US names such as Levi’s, Gap, Ralph Lauren, Diesel, and Tommy Hilfiger, plans to treble its production next year. But there is also expansion in the US. Brazilian denim manufacturer Santana Textiles’ has also recently established a factory in the US city of Edinburg. The factory is so large, and will employ so many people, that the city is being nicknamed “Denimburg.” (Okay that’s also partly due to Santana Textiles’s PR campaign. But it makes a point: Denim is big news.)

Like some smaller denim companies, Santana Textiles (one of the five largest denim manufacturers in the world) may want to capitalize on the “American made” label, that helped to establish American Apparel as a chic, quality line. But it’s probable that the company also wants to be able to respond to changes and trends in the US market quickly.
Smaller denim designers – the ones to watch

According to a Cotton Incorporated Lifestyle Monitor survey, Levis, Lee, Wrangler, and Gap are the four most popular brands for jeans in the US. But, a respectable 26 percent of consumers purchased jeans in specialty stores, which, by their nature, concentrate on smaller labels.

With younger, hipper consumers looking for cut, fabric quality, and a twist on the classic theme, jeanswear is one area where young designers have proved that they carve out their own niche. And several design companies have initially concentrated on jeans, before moving into other areas of apparel.

One to watch is the Iowa-based boutique Raygun, which launched its own jeans line just in time for Independence Day 2011. Retailing at a low price of $55 each, Raygun has created a relaxed fit boot cut and relaxed straight leg for men, and a fitted straight leg, fitted skinny leg, and a fitted boot cut for women. Raygun’s Merchandise Manager Ryan Looysen told Iowa’s Gazette, “it’s really hard to find jeans that are not overly styled. It’s hard to find a good pair of simple jeans that doesn’t have too much going on, something that has good denim, clean lines, simple and unmarked.” Having received positive feedback on products that they had previously put their name to, the boutique decided to produce their own jeans line, to get exactly what they, and their customers, were looking for.

Jeans from Raygun’s range

The company’s marketing model is an interesting one (and it’s bound to be emulated). Sold in its Des Moines and Iowa City stores, Raygun is focused on these cities, which, like others in the US, have their own style and fashion trends (compare Surf City, California with artsy, hipster Brooklyn, NY, for example). Raygun jeans are currently manufactured in China, but the company says that it intends, eventually, to manufacture in the US, and even locally in Iowa.

Raygun’s current offerings are classic, stylish, and clean. Mostly, dark Indigo, with creases and abrasions kept to a minimum. Raygun wanted to produce a line of stylish essentials, or “basics,” and designed its jeans to have a similar look as Levi’s 501 jeans from a distance. Up close, however, Raygun jeans have some stylish details to distinguish them from the crowd, such as printing on the inside of the pockets, special “Raygun rivets,” and – very cool – the brand name and style type printed in white on the inside hem, in Helvetica font.
Denim style – from hideous kinky to classic sexy

When it comes to personal style, Lifestyle Monitor has found that 74% of women prefer wearing jeans, to 22% who prefer casual slacks, and, similarly, that 71% of men prefer jeans, to 25% who prefer slacks. Not surprisingly, then, the average US consumer owned 6.8 pairs of jeans in 2010. The most popular styles for women are boot cut (28%), relaxed fit (21%), loose fit (13%), and skinny (12%). For men they are relaxed fit (38%), regular fit (22%), loose fit (13%), and boot cut (10%).

Many of the more expensive of designer jeans will continue to be defined by sexy rips, abrasions, bleach spots, embroidery, and more. However, with the economy still not fully recovered, style and sex appeal is replacing designer-slovenliness. The worn and weathered look is taking a back seat for most jeans. There are fewer designer abrasions and rips, and faded areas are subtler. (The hem of denim shorts might be subtly frayed; jeans might have a patched rip at the knee, etc.) Instead, clean denim, in bold colors (especially indigo) are looking strong for 2011 and 2012. Jeans and denim skirts are becoming more classic in cut, and morphing into more formal styles of pants and skirts not normally associated with denim.

Part of the reason for this shift is Mad Men, the television series, set in the 1960s, that has become known for its sharp suits and slinky, “real woman” dresses. The program is already affecting non-denim fashion. (Notably, Mad Men recently inspired a Banana Republic collection.) Similarly, 2011′s 1970s fashion subplot has inspired denim cuts from high waisted to flared styles. As such the classic smart and sexy look is also penetrating into jeanswear. New jeans from Level 99, yet another denim label, are so sharp they border more formal pants. And the company’sش stretch denim, knee-length Mikada mini skirt is classic sexy.

With smart denim classics as well as casual denim pieces continuing to build in strength, the future of denim remains glowingly bright.

The colour white is translated into several trails of life: purity, truthfulness, and serenity. In fashion, white is associated with summer and its freshness. In photography, when the colour is contrasted with its black counterpart, the realistic element jumps out doubly.

The powerful intermix of the two is seen in this Vogue Germany editorial featuring Austrian model Iris Strubegger. It’s exploring the vision of conservative confidence amid a marbled vicinity. Despite a cleavage-bearing chest being a distant sight, the empowerment is spelled through her all-white attire.

The side-parted sleek pixie hair, darkened brows and decisive liner silhouette exhibit an authoritative stance. The arbitrary presence of a man in one of the frames is a little vague and, honestly, an unnecessary casting but it highlights a faint gush of the femme fatale aesthetic. But this femme fatale influence isn’t a mysterious, dark alleyway kind. Leather has been replaced with structured fabrics and headscarves have overpowered overdramatic accessories, however the cigarette and fur subsist.

It takes a lot to be unique today, and sometimes, inconspicuous simplicity does the job really well.

Jobs stayed at Reed (a liberal arts university in Portland, Oregon) for only one semester, dropping out quickly due to the financial burden the private school's steep tuition placed on his parents.In his famous 2005 commencement speech to Stanford University, Jobs said of his time at Reed: "It wasn't all romantic. In The Second Coming of Steve Jobs, an unauthorized biography, a friend from Reed reveals that Jobs had a brief fling with folk singer Joan Baez. Baez confirmed the the two were close "briefly," though her romantic connection with Bob Dylan is much better known (Dylan was the Apple icon's favorite musician). The biography also notes that Jobs went out with actress Diane Keaton briefly.

When he was 23, Jobs and his high school girlfriend Chris Ann Brennan conceived a daughter, Lisa Brennan Jobs. She was born in 1978, just as Apple began picking up steam in the tech world. He and Brennan never married, and Jobs reportedly denied paternity for some time, going as far as stating that he was sterile in court documents. He went on to father three more children with Laurene Powell. After later mending their relationship, Jobs paid for his first daughter's education at Harvard. When you attach your name to a global cosmetic brand, you’re expected to be eccentrically passionate about your job. And Napoleon Perdis certainly doesn’t disappoint with his zealous commentary and tongue-in-cheek humour.

This man is a live wire when it comes to make-up trends. For someone who shuffles between Los Angeles and Sydney faster than a dubstep dancer, Napoleon is well established as a candidate to interpret runway looks into achievable everyday trends that possess the longevity factor.

However, we come bearing good news. You don’t have to wait for many of 2012′s months to have passed until you can dust your face with a fresh touch of spring, because Napoleon has shortlisted the top spring 2012 beauty trends that can be worn right now. What’s better than having bite-sized happiness of next year well before it arrives?

These foolproof trends have a lifeline of over 12 months so, without further ado, it’s time to beautify.
Spring 2012 makeup trends you can wear now

In the following mini how-tos we structure the make-up looks around autumn / fall 2011 as we interviewed Napoleon Perdis specific to this. However, being spring / summer looks, what follows is just as relevant to Fashionising.com’s Southern Hemisphere readers who are now entering spring / summer 2011.

Matte complexion

The irony of this trend is that to create a timeless look, you need to step away from the trends. This balanced-out skin tone is an inspiration from the 80s and 90s, where a shiny or glossy face was nowhere to be seen. Napoleon suggests opting for muted colours, be it for eye shadow or nail lacquer.

Tips from Napoleon Perdis:

* First rule is to always apply primer. You want your skin to be as close to perfect as it can get before applying foundation.
* When picking foundation, go for a powder-based variety.
* Steer clear of applying illuminator or highlighter in your t-zone.
* Leave your forehead bare, as the foundation isn’t a mask. Apply it only in the center of your face and then blend outward for a natural look.

Contoured cheeks

During damp wintery days, a minimalist beauty look is usually the fastest way to look crowd-friendly. The secret behind this no-makeup drama is inspired by spring’s take on a sun-kissed look. Napoleon’s secret – “The wonder of contouring is complexion perfection at its best!” He says nude and muted tones are coming back for spring 2012, but that’ll also work for fall due to its versatility.

“A high cheek bone with a kiss of peachy pink blush is an epitome of Hollywood glamour. And why wouldn’t you want to look like you’ve just got dressed for the red carpet?” he says.

Tips from Napoleon Perdis:

* Sweep bronzer under the jaw line from the ear to the chin, it has a slimming effect and will make the face look more angular.
* Make a fish-face and apply the bronzer under the cheekbones. Always stroke in an inward motion – from the ear towards the center of the face.
* To perfect the sun-kissed guise, dab cream blush on the apples of your cheeks and take it out all the way till your ears. Always smile when applying blush and work in circular, dabby motion.
* Add some highlighter powder on the top of your cheeks to create a halo effect.

Bare eyed mascara

Ditch every other eye tool in your make-up drawer, as to master this trend, all you need is an eyelash curler and mascara. This 60s-Twiggy-inspired, bare-eyed mascara look has taken the celebrity-filled red carpet by its horns and it’s only fair that you include that in your daily ritual too. This trend is all about the lashes, but the secret is to keep them natural; let the eyeliner or eye shadow go on a much-deserved break.

Tips from Napoleon Perdis:

* Always apply mascara first, even before foundation. It opens up the eyes and creates a road map for your face. You might find that you don’t need as much makeup as you thought you did, post-application.
* Curl your lashes and whack on an eyelash primer to create a base.
* Avoid lumps by brushing lashes with a lash comb after wriggling on the mascara.
* Beef up the fringing on the corner of the lashes with some individual false eyelashes.
* Black and dark browns are colour picks for fall.

Metallic colours

To update your look from summer to fall, include accents of warmer hues in your everyday make-up routine. If plums, violets and olive scare you, then opt for metallic shades. A little dust of silver under the eye or a sparkly topcoat of nail lacquer will not make you look like a teenager. Napoleon suggests, “Don’t be scared to add sparkle during the day. If it makes you feel on-trend and fashionable, brave against the boring and dull crowd on the street”.

Tips from Napoleon Perdis:

* Use loose sparkle powder for fall, as opposed to creamy-based gels. They tend to stick-on and create high shine.
* Two spots for metallic sparkle for the eyes – under the eye and on inner and outer corner.
* Metallic nail polish is a subtle way of approaching this trend. You can stick with a natural flawless face, but make a statement with the nails.
* A smoky eye is always a winner, be it any season. Opt for metallic eyeshadow shades of charcoal and grey to fit the trend

Brows are bold but feminine

Not sleeky thin or roughly thick, for the next couple of seasons, brows are strict but groomed. This involves a lot of filling, perhaps even growing them out to get optimum results for next year. For now, stay clear from pointed or bushy looks. Napoleon takes runway inspiration for this season from Oscar de la Renta and Donna Karan for this trend.

Tips from Napoleon Perdis:

* Observe the directions towards which the hair is growing. When filling the brows, follow the path and colour in that direction.
* A brow pencil always needs to be a shade or two lighter than the hair colour.
* Keep it sophisticated but strong. Brows are the map of the face, let them make a statement.

Nude vs classic red

This cold war between nude and red lips is a never-ending saga. The bright stained lips have had enough publicity, and Napoleon says this fall, the pout needs a warm nude shade. “Pop of colour on a dreary winter day is classic, but we can change things around. Everyone will be making a statement with their eyes while toning down the lips,” says Napoleon. But if you’re a bold lip enthusiast, then read over our spring lipstick colours guide.

Steps by Napoleon Perdis:

1. Dab the lips with a cream-based concealer. Stay on the outer edges to form an outline around the lip.
2. To pick a shade best suited for your skin tone, compare the colour of the nude lipstick to the inside of your lips. The lipstick should be one or tones darker.
3. Use a lip brush to paint the lips, starting from the centre.
4. To finish off, dab some loose powder over the lips for extra effect.
5. If all else fails, simply pick a nude gloss. It’ll conceal the natural pinkish hues of the skin.
