UTS WINS SILVER AT AUG’S

On September 25^th, the UTS squad made their way to the sunny shores of the Gold Coast to compete in Australian University Games. A bigger and better tournament than EUGs meant bigger and better competition – a competition that led a certain site (cough force sideline) to predict UTS would place 3^rd in our pool, and 7^th overall. So with a fire in our bellies to prove them wrong, UTS pulled out at all the stops to make sure we claimed a medal!

Day 1 saw UTS play RMIT, Flinders and Murdoch university. We’ll admit, we were hesitant about the Flinders game as we knew it would be a difficult one, yet managed to pull out on top and make it through the first day unscathed! A day without defeat gave the team the inspiration we needed to face a second day which we knew would be a difficult couple of games for us!

BUUF and UNSW were teams UTS knew we’d have a lot of fun against, but we’d also have to fire up to take the games from them. Both games were extremely well spirited games and we’ll be the first to admit that UNSW gave us a run for our money in that 2^nd game! Luckily, we came out on top against both sides, and suffice to say we partied hard that night knowing that our hardest games were behind us.

On Wednesday morning, UTS took the time to chill out and bond as a team, heading to the beach to watch the infamous Bat Bear display his prowess on the surfboard. It may have started out as a court punishment for Bat Bear, but we’re pretty sure he was more confident than he seemed when he disappeared over those waves. After a morning of sun, sand, and beach Frisbee (why is it that taking Frisbees to a beach ALWAYS ends in layouts into waves?), UTS headed to the fields to play their only game of the day against Griffith uni. The sun may have gone to our heads though, because the first 10 minutes of the game saw us going point for point against a team we thought we’d had covered. Luckily, we pulled our heads in and ended up stopping them in their tracks and ending the game with a significant win. Phew.

Thursday saw UTS smash ECU 15-1, ending the game early and giving us plenty of time to watch some Div 1 ultimate, and cheer on our Frisbee mates in their games. Soon after, the rain began beating down and we trudged through our warm up with a determination to stay warm and end our game against ACU early. We didn’t know just how early though, as 4 points in to the game ACU suggested we call the game 15-0 to UTS and get warm inside. I must admit, it was a bit disappointing to fire up for a game, only to have the opposition not attempt to play, but at the same time we were pretty thankful to be out of the rain with some tasty lunch!

We did have our awesome semi-final to make up for our lost game, and after 5 hours of sitting around chatting we were definitely keen to get back on those fields and show ANU what we were made of! We came out firing against ANU’s solid team, and managed to take the game 15-2 from the experienced Canberra team. With the exception of our finals match, this semi was definitely the best game our team had all competition, and it was hands-down the most fun and well-spirited!

Which brings us to our finals match on Day 5. After a quieter night on Thursday night, making sure we were all home not long after midnight, we got ourselves a solid amount of sleep to prepare for our big finals match against UQ. Both teams were undefeated in the pool play, so we knew this was going to be a BIG match, and we’d have to give it everything we had, no regrets, nothing left to give by the end of the game. I can tell you now every single player on our team was running their absolute hardest every single point we were on! Though we came out strong against the Queenslanders, scoring the first few upwinders to take us to a 3 point lead, we held out until the last 20 minutes of the game. Here, the UQ side showed us everything they had, pulling out some absolutely amazing game play that was a bit too much for even Patty’s sick layout D’s to handle! Though we ended up losing out to their amazingly strong side, we still had an excellent game, with some amazing grabs, some even better layouts and definitely all round amazing team spirit. We’re very proud to have taken home a silver medal, and we applaud UQ for putting on such a sweet game for the finals, they definitely deserved that Gold just as much as we did.

At this point, we’d like to say a huge thanks and give three big Frisbee hurrahs to the teams who gave us heaps of support on our sidelines. It was amazing to see the Div 2 final grab a bigger crowd than the Div 1 final, and your ‘Let’s Go UTS’ chants really did lift our spirits in the last half of that game! This silver medal is for you guys too, so take a bite when you see one ;)

We’d also like to give a big shout out to Coach Tom and Coach Mon, who stuck with us in the lead up to AUGs, and for Mon’s emails of encouragement while we were up there. Also a big ups to Patty, who struggled to sort out everything ‘admin’ throughout the lead up to AUGs, and even while we were up there – we know he puts a whole lot of effort into our club, and we’re so glad we could help him take home a medal!

For a lot of our players, this was their last uni games, so we hope the taste of silver is just as sweet for you guys, and we wish you all the best in the big wide world, and in your future Ultimate careers too!

Gold (Spirit) for UTS Frisbee!

For the first time in a long long..(long?) time, FCUTS were able to head to Eastern Uni Games with not one, but TWO teams ready to hit the fields.

From July 3 until July 7, 24 of the Frisbee kids braved the freezing weather and ridiculous rain/winds of our nation’s capital to bring their best Frisbee to the universities of the east coast. Though we had a gold medal to defend, we were ready to party hard all night and bring our A-game to the fields the next day..unfortunately we weren’t able to hold onto that shiny medal another year, but we had a lot of fun trying!

Team Hindenburg were hit early with their most important game on the afternoon of the first day against UNSW. After a slow start in the first half, we revved up for the second half and closed the margin slightly, but were unable to best the strong UNSW team.

Day 2 saw two slightly easier victories against Sydney Uni B team and ANU2 – but the wind played havoc with the discs in every game so upwind points were always a challenge.

Perhaps Hindenburg’s greatest game of all though lay on the third day of competition. After an early start, we headed to the fields to face competition favourites, Mac Uni. Instead of going down in flames, we surprised Mac by coming into the game all guns blazing, firing up and taking the first 2 points (yes, including an upwind!). Throughout the game Mac managed to get up on us, but as the hooter signalled the end of the game, we left the field losing by 2 points – the closest margin ANYONE had with Mac that weekend, including the finals. Definitely a win in our books!

Being a new and developing team, Titanic members knew they were up for a challenge – and were ready to go down trying! Facing some really strong teams, everyone in Titanic summoned hugely valiant efforts on the field, improving in each game and having a lot of fun.

Our handlers worked on their technique against Sydney Uni’s A team, and we made good use of our poppers against ANU 1. Versing CIT, some great long throws and cutting brought about a well-earned win! Although Newcastle were a much more experienced team, the game featured some sweet grabs from our newest recruits.

Titanic’s most contested match was against CSU Falcons on Day 3, with amazing defensive play holding off their first downwind point for 20 minutes. Although not reflected in the scoreboard, we brought a lot of energy to our final game against ANU 2. Overall, our opponents acknowledged our commitment, intensity, teamwork, knowledge of the rules and gumption – taking out the Spirit prize is an enormous success!! Special thanks must also go to our manager, who provided stacks of advice, encouragement and directions on the field, not to mention partying like a pro.

So after all those hard fought games, after all the amazing costumes we created, and all the late-night partying, UTS came home to their (comparatively) warm Sydney beds, confident that we’d had an awesome uni games run, and with some hilarious memories to go with them.

Huge thanks to Tom and Mon for their coaching through the season, and an epic well done to UTS Titanic for their Spirit win, we’re extremely proud of that one!

Usyd IV!

Hey gang!

Well well well it's time for our first team tournament of the year!
Unlike the Autumn Hat, the USYD IV is our first tourney we register as a team. Because of this, it's a pretty big one for us - getting to test the waters for EUGs and generally just get to know you all better. How fun for you (and us)!

As another year of uni kicks off, the UTS Frisbee Club welcomes a hoard of new members with open arms. We’re so excited to be entering 2011 with a bigger and better club.

O-Day proved to be a very big one for FCUTS, with the orientation drinks the following Monday night at The Loft allowing the older members to get to know the new guys and girls of the club. Previously held in Glebe, the new location of Orientation drinks encouraged the weary uni students to have a drink with club members and lots of laughs and drinks were had.

As always, our first training was a big one, with discs flying everywhere and many attempts to teach our new recruits the awesome game that is Ultimate Frisbee. We’re proud to say that by the end of the session, almost everyone had picked up on the basics, including some sweet backhands from the new kids – and even a few solid forehands (already)! Following that, the chilled dinner and drinks were...loud...with lots of chatter filling the Landsdowne Bistro. A few of us then kicked on to Vic Park to join SUUFA in drinking games.

This week’s training introduced us to even more new members, which was greatly exciting for our humble club, and we’ve almost got the forehands down pat. The exec were highly impressed by how quickly people have picked up some Ultimate skills! The highlight of this week though was definitely the trivia. After a few failed attempts at dinner (why Landsdowne? Why?!) we eventually got the motley crew down to the Glasshouse for a night of home-grown trivia (Congrats to the ‘Save Charlie Sheen’ crew for their win!). After which, we spent a good half hour trying to get lollies out of a water bottle, thanks to Caroline’s genius.

It’s been a promising start to the year for UTS’s Frisbee Club, and we can’t wait to play our first tournament with the 34 new members who have signed up. That said, we also can’t wait to continue training sessions and drinking sessions with the other members who unfortunately can’t make Autumn Hat.

COMPETITION

2010 saw UTS really step up their game in terms of competition results. First playing together as a team in chilly Bathurst, where UTS came in 3rd at the Ultimate Stampede, beating their hosts CSU by a considerable margin in the playoff. Next up was the Sydney Uni IV, where we fought hard against Mac Uni but unfortunately came off second best, ending the competition with a not-quite-bronze in position 4.

We didn’t quite achieve these results at Northern Suburbs League (NSL) Winter Competition, coming in 9th and 11th in both Division 2 and 3 respectively (but still managing to beat Sydney Uni (SUUFA) in both divisions, so all was not lost).

Despite the somewhat rocky start, UTS - with our team made up of both fresh-faced players and old hands, managed to bring our A-Game to sunny Coffs Harbour for Eastern University Games (EUGs). After making it through the round matches undefeated, UTS ended up in a grudge match against SUUFA, battling it out for the top spot. After a few very long points, some magnificent plays on both offence and defence, UTS came waltzing home with shiny GOLD medals around their tanned necks, able to claim that they were undefeated throughout the whole of their EUGs experience.

Unfortunately, the team was unable to scrape a side together for Australian University Games (AUGs). It seems Perth was just beyond this winning team's reach, so we resolved to come back more determined than ever in 2011.

Perhaps the most exciting thing for us as a club though was our hosting of the inaugural UTS IV in May, a huge success despite the not-so-successful weather, raising plenty of funds for the club and giving teams a chance to train up for EUGs. We even had the pleasure of hosting a few teams at the competition who were getting in practice for World Clubs. The team is looking forward to matching this success in 2011 and beyond.

SOCIAL

We kicked off our year with initiation drinks in Glebe – a fantastic start to the year, there was drinking and laughter a-plenty, which continued throughout the year.

We also showed off our costuming finesse at many parties throughout the year, both at weekend competitions (Bathurst’s winter wonderland saw snowflakes, penguins, icicles and...hockey players?) and also at every EUGs party, even the last one (we’re looking at you, SUUFA.)

UTS partied hard throughout uni games, drinking copious amounts and dancing our little hearts out, with many hilarious anecdotes reaching those members of the club who were unable to attend. These party animals provided much amusement, not only at uni games, but also at the multitude of Thursday night socials.

UTS and SUUFA continued their Frisbee bromance and despite our mock-rivalry on the fields, we partied hard together at the combined socials – whether they were the official joint-socials like the UTS/SUUFA Pub Crawl, or the unofficial joining of forces on Thursday nights at Paddy Maguire’s.

A huge thank you to everyone who made this year the successful and ridiculously fun year that it was. To those who are parting with our club, we would like to say a huge thank you for the years you devoted to making our time that much more enjoyable. To those staying: let’s get psyched up for an even better 2011!!!

NSL (North Sydney) Spring Hat 2010

Hey, so are you looking at jumping right into ultimate frisbee? Then here's your opportunity, the NSL Spring Hat League. The what??

A Hat is where you register by your skill level (absolute beginner, intermediate, pro) and then your name is picked out a a hat (tada!) and randomly popped onto a team. The end result is that each team has a healthy mix of beginners, intermediate and pro players on it. This is the best way to get into it, as you won't be overwhelmed and you also get the chance to learn from people who've been doing this frisbee thing for a while now
If you want to get involved, send us an email right away and we'll even pair you up with a UTS kid so you won't be all alone :)

DETAILS

What: 6 week hat(random teams with a mixed skill of players) competition, run on Tuesday nights.

Start : Monday 6th September 2010
Finish : Monday 11th October 2010 (includes one washout week)

Early timeslot: 6:30 – 7:15 and 8:10 – 8:55pm
Late timeslot: 7:20 – 8:05 and 9:00 – 9:45pm

Venue: ELS Hall Park, North Ryde.

Gold for UTS Frisbee

The 4^th to the 7^th of July were rigorous days of sport in Coffs Harbour – but this certainly paid off for UTS Ultimate Frisbee. After some testing encounters and remarkable highlights, UTS prevailed as the 2010 Eastern university Frisbee champions.

Remaining undefeated throughout the tournament, UTS beat a very tough Sydney Uni team in the final to capture the coveted gold medal.

En route to this magnificent triumph, UTS only dropped 7 points and scored a phenomenal 45 points in its pool stage. With the defeated opponents CSU, UNSW, Newcastle A & B watching on, the highly contested final was only separated by 3 points (14-11).

This achievement is the best finish UTS has ever had in any tournament. Special thanks must go to our sponsors, The Nags Head Hotel, who have provided overwhelming support and backing throughout our preparations this year.

We hope to imitate this success in further tournaments, looking towards Australian Uni Games held in Perth this October.

Sydney IV + Eastern Uni Games '10

During the month of April, the UTS Frisbee team entered in their first real competition for the year, playing together as UTSexperience. Hosted by the ppl from Sydney Uni; a number of uni teams including Macquarie, UNSW, ANU gathered onto the fields of Moore Park to fight it out for the coveted Sydney IV tournament. A day that was blissed with many new faces to the team, saw UTS surge to the final, dropping only one pool game to Macquarie; who oddly enough turned out to be our opponents in the final. In a highly contested match, UTS came within a grasp of capturing first place only to fall short to Macquarie. One of UTS' best outings at the Sydney IV in recent years and it was mainly due to the immense new talent we have joining us this year. It was an end to the playing day but not the party as most of us kicked on to the after party and raged on.

Eastern Uni Games, the second biggest party of the year, 4-7 July in Coffs Harbour is also coming up ! UTS Ultimate Frisbee will be sending a team and trust me, you want to be there. So if you want to be part of Eastern Uni Games in 2010, then get involved!

Trials/trainings starts THIS Sunday 18th April @ Wentworth Park 2.30 -4.30 pm and will go straight through till July with the occasional odd weekend off.

Hey guys and girls,

It's that time of year again, the Sydney IV is approaching and its time to get registered for a great day frisbee and a kicking after party hosted by none other than the Sydney Uni kids.

WHAT: 2010 Sydney Uni IV - we play as UTS in a round-robin tournament against a number of university teams including Sydney, UNSW, Macquarie,Newcastle and ANU.
WHEN: Saturday 10th April @ 9am approx.
WHERE: Centennial Park
COST: TBC (approx. $10-15)
WEAR: Green (or you can buy a UTS shirt on the day for $35)
PARTY: There is a free after-party @ The Nags Head Hotel in Glebe with cheap cheap drinks (more info to come...)

This tournament is ALL about getting beginner's into the game of ultimate frisbee so even if you haven't played before you are more than welcome to sign up. It's a great day of frisbee and we'll be playing against other uni teams such as USYD,UNSW,CSU, ANU and Macquarie.
We will be looking to field 2 UTS teams so the earlier you can let us know if you're keen to play, the easier and better for us.

University Hat 2010

Hello All

Saturday 27th March, a very important date to remember, as it is the day that the 2ND ANNUAL UNIVERSITY HAT is on!!

The Uni Hat is a great chance to meet all the other Ultimate Frisbee players from all the other NSW Uni's. Basically, teams are selected at random, with an even spread of talent across all of the teams. Such is the diversity of players in this competition, chances are you'll have some people from UTS, Sydney Uni, UNSW, Macquarie and possibly CSU and Newcastle in your team.

It is also a great way for new players to learn how to play the game, as there are is a multitude of other new players from the other universities getting involved, as well as some of the best players in the state, who are more than happy to share their knowledge and experience with all players.
It is also ridiculously cheap, approx $10 which includes lunch and prizes!

UTSexperience 2010 Edition

With the turn of a decade, this New Year promises to be grandest one yet; entering both Eastern Uni games and Australian Uni games with an aim to improve on a previous 4th and 9th placing, much fun is to be had.

For future members, join us at O Day on the 24th February at the UTS tower, we will have a stall set up and gladly help you sign up.

Past, present and future UTS frisbee players are also called onto to help in celebrating our NEWLY acquainted sponsor – The Nags Head Hotel which will be the venue of the FCUTS 2010 initiation drinks on Thursday night, 25th of February. This social will be a great way to meet everyone and get to know the proud drinking tradition of the club; messy times are sure to be had.

Trainings will occur on Thursdays and will begin on the 4th of March at Wentworth Park from 4-6 pm, players of all skill levels are welcome so come have a throw with us followed by a feed and drinks.

COMPETITION

In 2009, UTSexperience performed phenomenally well in all competitions throughout the year. In our domestic league, the NSL Winter League our Division 3 team finished runner-up to a very formidable Macquarie Uni Team.
In a rigorous 14 week competition that gathers a variety of talent and consists of players of all experience levels, UTS is to be commended for performing consistently every week.

Looking towards the somewhat middle of the year, a UTS team comprising of many new faces this year was sent to the chilly inlands of NSW, more specifically the town of Bathurst having the least clue of how’d they perform.
Eastern Uni games (EUG’s) proved to be very tough for all as people battled through 4 days of freezing temperatures, fighting off cold after cold. Still UTS came through, placing a well deserved 4th and narrowly missing bronze in a very close match that went to the wire against CSU Bathurst.

The grand finale to the year was the always promising Australian Uni Games (AUG’s) which was held at the Gold Coast this year. This two division tournament fell right into the hands of UTS as the draw provided us with some easier opponents as well as a few tricky games. Six hard and heat sweltering days took a toll on all of us though UTS stuck in there and finished off well with a very respectable 9th from 23 teams.
Highlights from the tournament include our playoff between Macquarie University where there was some great desperation shown and willingness to fight which in the end got us through and was a fitting conclusion to the year. As well, UTS gave Flinders Uni a real scare in the early crossover game, only trailing by one at halftime largely due to some great D, shutting down their big players on many occasions. So too, the conquering of UWA in universe point and in turn setting up the playoff game with Mac was a remarkable effort by all and showed what UTS is all about.

2009 has been a very result pleasing year for UTSexperience and the best is yet to come as we look forward to the new and exciting talent joining us in 2010.

SOCIAL

Frisbee aside, 2009 was a rocking year socials wise, there were some killer costumes on show and a ton of drinking done. One particular instance worth mentioning were the cacti costumes which all of the girls wore at EUG’s and I’m sure were the envy of the party.
UTS were a definite show at all EUG’s and AUG’s parties, witnessing some commendable acts of drinking and partying but also many things we would like to erase from our memories (I’m sure everyone knows what I’m talking about here, EUG’s *cough* *cough*).

Also, the long lasting relationship of UTS and SUUFA continued and events such as the SUUFA Pub Crawl, joint rock climbing and UTS vs. SUUFA Paintball were occasions where we were graced by the company of the pleasant Sydney Uni Frisbee people.

Thanks to everyone who made this year so enjoyable; to those who are leaving us thank you for all the laughter and the happiness you have brought us and to those staying lets get psyched up for another awesome year of Frisbee in 2010.

Second week of uni and you're on top of everything right?! Time to get down to frisbee training!

TRAINING: Thursday 4pm-6pm @ Wentworth Park w/ drinks+dinner afterwards

As for Australian Uni Games we are still waiting to hear a final answer on maximum squad sizes. But regardless, it looks likely that there will be some sort of team selection take place after training this Sunday. As we've said all year, the team will be picked on the basis of contribution/commitment/enthusiasm. The best thing you can do is get along to training and show us you're keen to play!

AUGs TRAINING: Sunday 2:30pm-4:30pm @ Wentworth Park w/ Supercoach Glenn Hodges

If you have problems making training, but you're super-keen to join us on the Gold Coast and you haven't told us this is the case - please let us know ASAP.

TUESDAY NIGHT HAT: Tuesday nights @ ELS Hall, North Ryde

Following the conclusion of Monday Night League in a few weeks, a Tuesday Night Hat tournament will take its place. For those who don't know, a Hat tournament is designed so that all players from absolute beginners through to seasoned veterans can play together in the one tournament. Each player is randomly allocated to a team according to their skill level so that each team is roughly the same in standard. It's a great way to meet new people and to learn how to play Ultimate Frisbee at the same time - so we can't recommend it enough. Make sure you keep your Tuesday nights free and we'll send out more information when it comes to hand...

CHOCOLATE: Sell, sell, sell!

As a bit of a fundraising effort, inspired by the amazing chocolate-selling achievements of last year, we will again be selling $1 chocolates in the leadup to AUGs. If you care about the club, or if you just really love chocolate, it would be great if you could pitch in and help sell a box. Boxes can be picked up and returned to the UTS Sports Office during office hours...

Our EUGs UTSexperience finished an amazing FOURTH at the 2009 Eastern Uni Games in Bathurst!

They rocked out on the field, they rocked out on the dancefloor, they rocked out at the bar and they rocked out putting any number of weird things in alcohol then drinking it.

EUGs UTSexperience stand up and take a bow. You did us all proud :)

Thanks to all of you who have shown interest in playing Ultimate Frisbee for UTS at the 2009 Eastern Uni Games in Bathurst. The squad has now been selected and is as follows. Apologies to those who missed out - unfortunately we were limited to one team and a maximum squad of size of 16.

Training + Sydney Uni IV + Uni Games

Here's a whole bunch of info summarised into three major points:

1. Training is on again this Thursday 4pm-6pm @ Wentworth Park. Please bring a light + dark shirt. We will be kicking on for a feed and some hard-earned beers afterwards.

2. Sydney Uni IV is on next weekend!! We need to get you all registered NOW. Contact us for further details.

3. Eastern Uni Games, the second biggest party of the year, is 5-8 July in Bathurst. Australian Uni Games, the biggest party of the year, is 27 September - 2 October at the Gold Coast. UTS Ultimate Frisbee will be sending a team to both and trust me, you want to be there. The teams will be selected on commitment and attitude rather than skill. We will reward those who come to training on a regular basis and/or play in tournaments (i.e Sydney Uni IV). So if you want to be at Uni Games in 2009, then get involved!

University Hat 2009

Whether you've made it to training or not, here is your chance to get a full day of competitive Ultimate Frisbee, playing alongside rookies and veterans from the other universities in Sydney and around NSW. We are hoping to have a massive UTS contingent there - so get involved!

UNIVERSITY HAT 2009
When: 11am-6pm Saturday 21st March
Where: Reservoir Fields, Centennial Park
Cost: $10 - includes pizza + drinks

The tournament is run as a 'hat', meaning that you register according to your skill level and are allocated to a team. The idea is rookies and veterans will be evenly distributed amongst the teams, so you will have plenty of experienced teammates to help you out with rules/techniques/tactics and any questions you may have. This is a great chance to meet players from other universities, develop your skills and understanding of the game and most importantly, have fun!

UTS Frisbee in 2009

Welcome to 2009 UTS Frisbee players of the past, present and future. This year promises to be a fantastic one for FCUTS with an experienced squad bolstered by new faces and fresh legs. With a focus on Eastern Uni Games in July and Australian Uni Games in September, we will also be entering UTSexperience teams in the NSL leagues and other tournaments around NSW.

Don't forget FCUTS 2009 Drinks 7pm-9pm Thursday February 19th @ The Loft (UTS). This will be a chance to meet the team while sinking a few drinks. The UTSexperience prides itself on winning the party, so consider it a bit of pre-season training.

Looking ahead we have our casual trainings kicking off from 4pm-6pm Thursday February 26th @ Wentworth Park. Whether you're an experienced veteran or completely new to the sport, come along and have a throw. After training we tend to kick on to a local pub for a feed and a 'few' beverages.

UTSexperience action continues...

UniGames may be over for another year but Ultimate Frisbee at UTS doesn't have an off-season.

Instead the UTSexperience is continuing its meteoric rise through the ranks of challengers in the NSL Summer League. A team comprised of players who only took up the sport in 2008, plus one guy who looks like he did, has impressively won their first three matches of the Tuesday-night competition.

Trainings are kicking off on 6:00pm-7:30pm Thursdays at Wentworth Park. If you're keen to have a throw just come on down.

It's never too late to get involved. If you're a UTS student and you're looking for a new sporting challenge, get onboard. Whether you're a pro or you've never thrown a disc before it's time to get up-close and intimate with the UTSexperience.
