Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum are set to warm audience's hearts in Columbia Pictures' upcoming romantic movie, "The Vow," but when it came time to shoot the movie's racy scenes, Channing had a few tricks up his sleeve - and down his pants!

"He bared his ass quite a bit," Access Hollywood correspondent Tim Vincent said of Channing's performance to Rachel at the film's junket. "He did bare some other things. Yeah, he goes for it," Rachel said with laugh.

One thing I admire about Leonardo DiCaprio is how how he progresses as an actor, how he outdo what he has done previously, and how he reinvents himself and presents a whole new package everytime he comes out in a movie. And this is what I witnessed in the latest movie offering of Warner Bros., J. EDGAR.

J. EDGAR tells the story of J. Edgar Hoover who was considered as the face of law enforcement in USA for almost 50 years. He was feared and admired, reviled and revered. But behind closed doors, he held delicate secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life. Directed by Client Eastwood, J. EDGAR, topbilled by Leonardo DiCaprio explored the life, both public and private, of the most powerful, controversial and enigmatic figures of the 20th Century. The movie also stars Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Damon Herriman, Ed Westwick, and Jeffrey Donovan.

Our Favorite Taho

Tahoooo!!! Tahoooo!!! Tahooooo!!! I used to hear this line in our neighborhood in Makati City (a city in Metro Manila) when I was a kid. This often wakes me up during Saturday mornings (as for weekdays, I usually wake up at 5:30 am for my morning classes, which is way earlier than the round of that morning shouts). So during weekends, when I hear that shout, I immediately grab my cup from the kitchen and run towards the gate to buy my favorite taho which I think is an icon in Pinoy's breakfast meal.

Taho is a Philippine snack food, traditionally sold and taken during mornings, made out of medium firmness tofu, arnibal (similar to caramel) and sago (similar to pearl tapioca). Philippines' taho, which can be found anywhere in the country, is similar to Indonesia's and Malaysia's tahu. Ancient records suggest that taho originated from the Chinese douhua. Even before the Spanish conquest of the Philippine islands, Chinese traders have interacted with our forefathers, hence enriching our culinary.

Channing Tatum goes back to romantic drama in THE VOW

Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe, Dear John) strengthens his position as one of Hollywood’s next generation of leading men as he goes back to romantic drama in the inspiring movie THE VOW. He stars opposite Rachel McAdams in this Columbia Pictures' next offering.

In the film, newlyweds Paige (McAdams) and Leo (Tatum) were struck by tragedy shortly after their marriage. A car crash puts Paige in a coma, where she is cared for by her devoted husband. When she comes to, without any memory of her husband or their marriage, the husband must woo her and ultimately win her heart once again.

Tatum is a self-proclaimed hopeless romantic, and felt the script told an authentic story about a once in a lifetime love and what people will do to hold on to that. “Falling in love is the easy part!” notes Tatum. “Getting on with your life together and making sure you stay in touch and connected because life can get in the way sometimes, that’s the tough part. I think that a huge part of Leo and Paige’s journey is based on the fact that not only do they make each other intensely happy and support each other, but that they pushed each other to grow and when you do that it really does take you to the next level in a relationship and in life.”
The actor admits that he found the role emotionally difficult at times because, as a young husband himself, he couldn’t help but imagine himself in this situation: “I hope I would be as brave as Leo is; it’s heartbreaking for him, but he has the faith to let Paige find her own way. And this role is great because Leo is so truthful about his love, he doesn’t hold it back, and I can relate to that. I love love! It’s harder to play than running around with guns and being physical, but it’s very satisfying.”

Tatum says it made total sense to him to work so hard to win Paige back: “If my wife (actress Jenna Dewan) lost her memory of me, I wouldn’t just be like ‘Okay, alright, well, see you later, good luck’. No. I’d be fighting tooth and nail and plug away at this until it comes back. No matter what.”

He continues: “It’s so frustrating for Leo because there’s nothing visibly wrong with his wife; she talks like Paige, she walks like Paige, everything is exactly the same, but it’s just her memory of her husband is completely gone. And it’s that much more painful that she remembered other people, her family, but just not her husband and everything they had been together.”

For director Michael Sucsy, casting Tatum was a case of finding the soldier of love in an established movie warrior. “The Leo role is a knight in shining armor, and prior to this I’d only seen Channing’s work where he’d been in tough, military roles. So I went to meet him, and we sat down, and I called the producers afterward and I said, ‘He is the guy. He’s Leo. It’s perfect for him.’ I got the sense that his heart was bigger than his chest cavity. He’s got a huge heart, Channing does, and so does Leo, and that really comes out when he has to keep sticking with his wife through the ups and downs.”

From Rachel McAdams’ point of view, “Channing Tatum is the perfect guy for this role because he’s a real renaissance man; chivalrous and gentlemanly. He’s playing someone who would do anything to win back his wife’s heart and that’s very much, I think, who Channing is. He’s a very heroic kind of guy, so yeah, and I know he loves love and really believes in it and I think he made Leo a really stoic character that you just fall in love with and believe that he’s definitely the rock in the relationship throughout. He added such lovely little touches to Leo.”

All in all, Channing Tatum sums up the core of the movie’s message this way: “It’s a big deal to vow yourself for life to somebody and mean it. It really is something.” Tatum will next star in a contemporary motion picture adaptation of “21 Jump Street” opposite Jonah Hill. Tatum and Hill are also executive producers on the project, which is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Experiencing Chinese New Year in Binondo (for the 1st time!)

Some say that my small eyes make me look Chinese. In fact, when I was sent to China for work, some of the locals have always mistaken me to be just like them. They kept on talking to me in Mandarin :). However, although my mom's ancestors have a little Spanish lineage as well, I still consider myself more than100% Filipino. That doesn't mean though that I don't value the Chinese influence in the Filipino culture. Of course I do, especially when I took Mandarin classes (although Fookien is the one most spoken in the Philippines) a few years back when I finally appreciated the value of their traditions, which I never paid attention before.

And with my interest and curiosity for the Chinese custom, I actually have planned at the start of the year (during my personal goal setting session) that I'll celebrate Chinese New Year this time around!

In 1998, local scuba divers captured the first documentation of the whale shark or butanding in Donsol, Sorsogon. Today, Donsol is considered the undisputed “Whale Shark Capital of the World.” The whale shark or butanding is the world’s largest living species of fish. Contrary to its fierce appearance, the butanding is a gentle fish that mainly feeds on plankton and krill. Swimming with this beautiful creature in Donsol is something one should experience. Its population has dwindled due to centuries of hunting, land development, marine pollution and accidental fisheries by catch. It is now classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) as endangered and is now protected by Philippine law. SM Cinema Launches the 1st Bigshot Film Festival

In college, as a communications student, I went through the process of producing my own film (together with my team mates). Though it was a difficult and tedious procedure, I enjoyed it a lot as I was able to learn film making in action, squeeze our group's creative juice and have fun and bond with our production team. And I'm also happy to reminisce the glorious awards night when we won grand slam for that project in the student film festival where our movie was part of.

And this is what I happily recalled when I attended the recent press conference of the first ever Bigshot Film Festival in the country. The project which searched for promising student filmmakers was spearheaded by SM Cinema in its support to advance film literacy in the country and promote Philippine cinema as a vehicle to cultivate and nurture our cultural identity. These students are so lucky to have been given this opportunity to produce their own films and have its commercial run in the country's largest theater network. Not all good and promising students are given this chance! I would have joined this project if there was already a Bigshot Film Festival during my time. :)

The Bigshot project was conceptualized in 2010 after movie exhibitors including SM Cinema received a 10% reduction on amusement tax. The project was SM Cinema’s way of giving back to the film industry by means of supporting independent movies made by budding student filmmakers.

Using the theme "Modern Day Heroism", Bigshot received 50 script entries from various schools in throughout the country. It officially kicked off in December 2010 with the announcement of the Top 15 student finalists at The Podium in Ortigas Center. The said event was later followed by The Grand Announcement of the Top 3 Bigshots at the Director’s Club in SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City and bagging the coveted top three spotsare: Archie Dimaculangan of the University of the Philippines (UP) - Diliman for his entry “Balang Araw”, Bianca Catbagan and Jose Antonio De Rivera, both from the UP - Diliman, for “Suntok sa Buwan” and KrizzieSyfu of De La Salle University Manila for “Tahanan”.

SM Cinema together with The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) and three of the most respected and prolific film practitioners in the country: Mr. Raymond Lee, writer-producer of award-winning films such as Ang Pagdadalaga ni MaximoOliveros, Zombadings: PatayinsaShokotsi Remington and Anak; two-time Palanca awardee and award-winning director Mr.Mark Meily; and film historian and director of Center for New Cinema Mr.Nick Deocampo screened and chose the top student film makers. As a prize for coming up with the best script-entries, the Top 3 Bigshots were awarded a generous P600,000 which aided them in producing a full-length piece.

The Top 3 Bigshots, all budding young filmmakers, have impressive film credentials under each one’s belt.

KrizzieSyfu, director of “Tahanan”, is a New York Film Academy graduate and later a DLSU alumnus where she received a University Cultural and Arts Award for Film in 2011. “Tahanan” tells the story of college student Samantha Benitez who goes on a life-changing journey to find inner peace in the company of orphaned children. Written by KrizzieSyfu, Ramon Prieto and Jason Gloria, “Tahanan” stars young actress Lauren Young as Samantha Benitez alongside veteran actor Mark Gil who plays Samantha’s father. “Tahanan” also features child starsSabrina Man, MiguellTafelix and KhenAldovino, among others.

In the first 10 minutes of the film, Tahanan has the potential to capture Filipino hearts. I'm looking forward to knowing the kids in the movie and how their stories are weaved in.

Archie Dimaculangan of the UP Film Institute is a member of the prestigious UP Cineastes’ Studio, the first student film organization in the country. Dimaculangan’s film “BalangAraw” is about a petty crime in a convenience store which escalates and weaves the lives of a call center agent, an expectant mother, a working student and a neophyte thief that ultimately examines their notion of heroism. “BalangAraw” is co-directed by FranneCheska Ramos and Jono de Rivera with Ice Idananas the film’s Director of Photography. The film starsactor JaoMapa, TV actress AleeraMontalla, indie film actress Shielbert Manuel, beauty queen-turned actress Tarhata Rico and Alex Vincent Medina.

Balang Araw in its first 10 minutes seems to be daring in terms of shots, music and script. I'm curious to see how Archie experimented in this film.

Lastly, the duo of Bianca Catbagan and Jose Antonio de Rivera, both of UP – Diliman, are prolific film competition veterans.Catbagan was a recipient of UP-Diliman’s 2010 Film Institute Excellence in Narrative Awardee while de Rivera was previously awarded the Gawad Mag-aaral by UP-Diliman’s College of Mass Communication. Their winning Bigshotmovie “SuntoksaBuwan”, a drama which centers on the defining bout of two boxers—one, young and talented; the other, older albeit passionate, is co-produced by Digitank Studios. The production team of “SuntoksaBuwan”, which stars award-winning actors Daniel Fernando, Nonie Buencaminoand JoemBascon,has celebrated film director Jim Libiran on tow as its creative producer.

The first 10 minutes is an establishing phase but the story of Suntok sa Buwan looks very compelling. I want to witness how the conflict and complications in the lives of the two boxers will evolve.

Joem Bascon from Suntok sa Buwan said that these student film makers are more experimental and he admires such creativity. Veteran actor Daniel Fernando also from Suntok sa Buwan on the other hand expressed support about the Bigshot Film Festival. He mentioned that while the budget for their film is small, he accepted the project as a sign of his commitment to support the Philippine movie industry. He may have differences with the young filmmakers since these students are too passionate about their craft, and would require more takes even if they already had good ones, Daniel however sees the potential of these filmmakers and looks at them as the next Lino Brocka, his mentor discoverer director, of this country. Carlo Cruz from Balang Araw shared that ideas of the student directors are fresh while Khen from Tahanan said that he learned a lot from them.

SM Cinema recently launched the 1st Bigshot Film Festival, an event which will showcase and celebrate the final masterworks of the Top 3 Bigshots. After the press conference last January 17at the SM Mall of Asia, film screenings will happen from January 25 to 31 at tSM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM North Edsa, SM Manila and SM Cebu.

SM Cinema's Marketing Head Sahara Garnica explained that the Bigshot Film Fetival is part of the goal of SM Cinema to encourage and pave the way for film makers to produce films. This is SM Cinema's way of giving back to the Filipino families; by supporting these filmmakers and instilling values as theme of the movie to be produced and witnessed by the audience. FDCP Executive Director Mike de la Rosa on the other hand mentioned that with their council as the lead agency for the development in the country, Big Shot is an initiative that deserves to be supported by the government.

Apart from the works of the Top 3Bigshots, the 1stBigshot Film Festival will also feature the masterpieces of the three Bigshot mentors: Mark Meily’sCinemalaya 2011 entry under the Director’s Showcase entitled “Donor” (2010), a film about a desperate woman who resorts to selling her kidney so she can afford to work abroad and completely break away from poverty and her do-nothing lover; “Endo” (2007) of Raymond Lee, winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Cinemalaya 2007, is a film which tackles short-lived romances, the sick cycle of impermanent jobs and the connection between the two. Lastly, Nick De Ocampo examines the origin of Philippine cinema relayed through three dimensional story-telling in his Cine/Sine (2009), the country’s first full-length 3D animation documentary. Furthermore, in its efforts to engage students and young cinephiles in supporting up-and-coming young filmmakers in the local independent film industry and to promote film literacy among the youth, students are entitled to a special discounted rate of PhP per ticket. Moreover, SM Cinema is coming up with a special Bigshot promo from January 1 to 31, 2012 where lucky moviegoers who purchase a Bigshot movie ticket have a chance to win exciting prizes. When a film banks on effective story telling -- WE BOUGHT A ZOO Movie Review

POTATO ON THE GO REVIEW (Movie):

At a time where jazzed up editing and spectacular special visual effects are the most recognizable selling points of a movie, here comes a simple yet powerful film which banked on the basic story telling (which should be each film's first and basic foundation) and nailed it right.

From the director of Jerry Maguire, Cameron Crowe, comes a highly entertaining, heartwarming adventure and family movie called WE BOUGHT A ZOO. Inspired by the true story about a single dad who dreams up the coolest, most unusual gift a parent could ever give his family: a zoo. The family travels from the city to their new home in the wilds of upstate New York, where their ramshackle zoo is waiting to be restored to its former glory.

As mentioned earlier, WE BOUGHT A ZOO banked on the greatness of its simple story. It's unusually longer than a regular film but not a single moment that I got bored. I was even surprised that I felt that way.

The story is simple yet compelling, about a widower together with his problem son and very young daughter trying to recover and move on from the death of his wife and how owning and managing a zoo got entangled in the situation. It may sound common but the way the story is developed, the way each situation is played up and written, and the way how the leads in the movie were characterized and portrayed made it really extraordinary. Script is well crafted, dialogues are so realistic, entertaining and funny scenes are tastefully done, and dramatic highlights are so moving.

Aside from the story and screenplay, another commendable factor about the movie is not just the powerhouse cast, but the strong acting ensemble. Matt Damon excellently portrayed his role! If he won't get an award from this, I think he should at least be nominated! He has mastered his craft and I think this is one of his best performances. Whether there's a dialogue or there's none, whether it's a light funny moment or an emotionally charged scene, whether he's trying to look cool or trying to get boringly serious, Matt Damon just delivered a brilliant work! My most favorite scene is the part where he's looking at the pictures of his wife and painfully trying to let go of the past. This one is just so moving, it's so powerful, Matt Damon was at his best!

Maggie Elizabeth Jones (Rosie, 7 year old daughter of Benjamin Mee) is the movie's scene stealer! She definitely captured the audience's attention and her charm and no nonsense delivery of dialogue and facial expression made her an instant favorite of the movie goers. She has so many acting highlights and she's so adorable in each of it. I guess the most memorable is the part when she told her dad that her brother loves him. It's just fascinating how a young kid can actually be surprisingly "matured" in thinking but still convincing. She is destined to be the next Dakota Funning of this generation! Mark my word folks! :)

Colin Ford as Bejamin's rebellious son Dylan also did well in his role. At first, I got irritated with his character (I guess that the film's intention) but I slowly understood and loved him. His true-to-the-character acting effectively conveyed the complications of their family situation and his relationship his father. His confrontation scene (issue on shaving) with Benjamin was classic! Everyone was moved -- in rage, in sympathy and in hug laughter!

Thomas Haden Church as Benjamin's brother is not your usual supporting actor. He may look sarcastic and funny in the movie but his character has a lot of sense. And Thomas did the role right.

Elle Fanning as the naive farm girl Lily also provided a commendable performance. Lily was reserved but audience can easily feel the emotion she's trying to convey. Everyone felt for her and that's hats off to Elle!

Scarlett Johansson is not her usual sexy character but nevertheless, she's still so lovable in this film. Scarlett intelligently played the role of Kelly, the zoo keeper. Whether it's about the animals or relationships, Scarlett showed the audience she can do the job well.

The rest of actors who played the staff of the Zoo were also remarkable in their respective roles. The characterizations may be distinct from each other but what transpired is their love for the animals and commitment to take care of the zoo.

Production Design is prolific especially at the part where the family moved to the zoo. I don't know if I am just an animal lover by nature but the fantastic shots with the animals, the zoo and the house gave me so much delight. Music and sound blended well in the movie. Editing is straight forward but the part where Matt Damon is remembering his wife was crafted so well. I even think that it's the best part of the movie.

One thing I did not like though is how the zoo inspector was characterized. He's just too animated. I think there's a way how to make him real yet entertaining. Although I liked it, I guess two love stories may be too overwhelming for the movie. Perhaps the younger pair could have just been close friends and it could just be an open ended thing on how their relationship will evolve. Two for me is just too cheesy. :)

In summary, WE BOUGHT A ZOO is about a movie where humans and animals saving each other's lives. Benjamin tried to save the zoo animals but unexpectedly, he and his relationship with his family were saved by these creatures as well. Lastly, I consider WE BOUGHT A ZOO a well made quality movie of 2011. The movie, and the actors, deserves a recognition, and of course our patronage. :) From a scale of 1 to 10 claps, I'm giving We Bought A Zoo, a powerful 9.
