www.agloco.com/r/BBDM5029

SYSTRAN awarded a first place ranking for translation quality at WMT competition

SYSTRAN's ground breaking hybrid machine translation engine outperforms Google and others in English to French translation
PARIS, FRANCE and SAN DIEGO, CA - May 28, 2009

SYSTRAN, the leading provider of language translation technologies, today announced that it ranked first in an English to French translation task at the fourth annual Workshop on Statistical Machine Translation in Athens, Greece. This workshop, which was part of the EACL 2009 Conference, was organized by Philipp Koehn, PhD, a recognized scientist in statistical machine translation. The goal of the competition was to compare the quality of multiple machine translation systems for 10 European language pairs, and to set up objective evaluation criteria for machine translation quality.

SYSTRAN's latest innovation, a hybrid approach to machine translation, outperformed Google Translation, academic statistical machine translation (MT) systems and several rule-based systems in the category of English to French News Translation. Making smart use of a reasonable size training corpus SYSTRAN delivered more accurate translation than very large systems like Google, which rely on a gigantic language model that is based on a Web index. SYSTRAN's hybrid MT engine will be officially released in Enterprise Server 7 on June 3rd.

SYSTRAN Enterprise Server 7, the first hybrid machine translation (MT) product designed for enterprise use, is based on a combination of self-learning and linguistic technologies. SYSTRAN 7 delivers highly consistent and quality translations, while significantly reducing the cost and time to customize the software.

"SYSTRAN's unique hybrid technology, which uses both deep linguistic analysis and self-learning, outperforms any other approach," said Dimitris Sabatakakis, CEO of SYSTRAN. "Our hybrid technology is designed to learn from fewer resources and is perfectly suited for high-quality specialized translation. As we have done for many years, SYSTRAN continues to be the leading innovator in the machine translation market."

Philipp Koehn, a statistical machine translation expert and the workshop organizer said "this workshop demonstrated that the rule-based approach combined with statistical and other techniques lead to highly competitive MT systems."

Jonestown, 30 years later: original audio recordings from People's Temple and Guyana.

Posted by Xeni Jardin, November 19, 2008 3:37 PM | permalink

The single most comprehensive online public resource for original source material related to Jonestown is Alternative Considerations of Jonestown and Peoples Temple, a website sponsored by San Diego State University's Department of Religious Studies. The site includes scanned documents, photographs, first-person testimonies and reflections, and a periodic email newsletter with updates on research, and the whereabouts of those who survived.

The section I've spent the most time in is the Audiotape Project Index, which includes copies of original recordings made by People's Temple members in California and Guyana.

Some of the cassette recordings at the SDSU website were retrieved from Jonestown by the FBI; others are in the possession of the FCC, which monitored radio transmissions from the compound. I'm not clear on the specifics, but it seems many of the original recordings in government possession are lost, missing, or still classified and unavailable to the public. Some ham radio operators once maintained a website documenting their battle to get the FCC to release more shortwave radio recordings from Jonestown, but the website is now offline.

Here is a list of recording transcripts and summaries at the SDSU Jonestown Project website. They include:

* Peoples Temple audiotapes collected by FBI
* Tapes of Peoples Temple radio conversations collected by FCC
* The Miscellaneous Audiotapes link includes tapes donated from private individuals and collections.

Three examples of the recordings in this collection:

* FBI #Q 042, "The Death Tape", made in Jonestown on 18 November 1978, during the mass deaths. Warning: the audio is very disturbing. You can hear children dying. Here is the audio at archive.org.
* FBI #Q594: In this tape recorded 5 days before the mass deaths, Jones and followers fantasize how they will torture and kill People's Temple defectors.
* FBI #Q174: music and entertainment performed by Peoples Temple members in October, 1978. An announcer speaks: "And now, ladies and gentlemen. We’re glad to have you here in Jonestown, Guyana. Sit back and enjoy yourself. We have a brief program. Presenting to you, the Jonestown Express."

The Jonestown Institute website is maintained by Elizabeth Parker, and archivist-historians Fielding McGehee III, and Dr. Rebecca Moore, an SDSU professor of religious studies. Together, they have played an instrumental role in preserving and digitally archiving many important historical documents related to People's Temple at SDSU, and with the California Historical Society. The SDSU site introduction expresses hope that visitors "will come away with an understanding that the story of Jonestown did not start or end on 18 November 1978. Dr. Moore has a personal connection to the tragedy: her two sisters died there. Annie Moore was Jim Jones' nurse, and Carolyn Moore Layton was his lover and lieutenant.

History of Computer Languages

O'Reilly has created a poster showing the 50-year history of computer languages from 1954 to 2004, available as a PDF. They have also been giving away copies of the posters at O'Reilly conferences. I love the links shown where older languages split or combined to create the newer languages over time.

I look back around 1990 when I was programming in college and see Fortran V, C++ and the birth of Visual Basic. I remember having to convince my engineering professors to let me program assignments in C++ instead of Fortran.

The original diagram was created by Éric Lévénez. Although O'Reilly is not updating the poster, Eric is keeping his original diagram up to date on levenez.com.

31 Days in Iraq

This map of Iraq from the NYTimes.com visually shows the over 1,900 people killed in Iraq during the month of January 2007.

"The map, based on data from the American, British and Iraqi governments and from news reports, shows the dates, locations and circumstances of deaths."

The number has doubled since they did this for January 2006 which had around 800 deaths. Each figure represents an individual of the American forces, coalition forces, Iraqi forces, police officers or civilian death. The larger figures have numbers showing how many people they represent (which I think diminishes the visual impact). A smaller icon shows the cause of death. All the figures are connected to a location in the country.

I would have added some color coding too, but I'm guessing the NY Times had to keep it in black & white to print it in the newspaper.

The Wine Advocate Vintage Guide

From eRobertParker.com, the online Wine Advocate Vintage Guide. Fascinating guide of wines from 1970-2005. Wines are grouped by region and year, and each group is scored and given a letter code to identify the current maturity status of those wines (like Ready to Drink, Too Old and Early Maturing). The color coding represents ranges of the numeric scores.

The guide is interactive, so clicking on any of the rating circles brings you to a list of the specific wines grouped together for that region. For the specific wines, you can see their individual name, score, maturity level and price range.

A PDF version of the guide is available here for download.

Travel Time Maps

From mySociety.org, time travel maps take into consideration the means of travel (car, rail, etc.) and the different paths available. Above is a map of London and shows time to travel from the center of town. The white contour lines represent half hour intervals, and the color coding has warm colors for the shortest times, and cool colors for the longest times.

The really interesting feature are the "islands". These small circles represent destinations that you can reach much faster than the surrounding area. Mainly stations for faster trains than have fewer stops.

Strangely similar in concept to an "event horizon".

How much longer will the space station fly?

It's the most complex construction project in history. Flying 250 miles overhead, the international space station can be seen with the naked eye, orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes. But as the Obama administration weighs the future of the U.S. space program, the station's future is very much in doubt. full story

An analysis of quality of work life and career-related variables

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the level and relationship between qualities of work life (QWL) with career-related variables. The sample consists of 475 executives from the electrical and electronics industry in the free trade zones in Malaysia for both the multinational corporations (MNCs) and the small-medium industries (SMIs). The selection of respondents using stratified random sampling technique involves a complete list of industrial firms registered with Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA). Construct validity and discriminant validity were conducted on the instruments. Three exogenous variables were studied. The result indicates that the three exogenous variables are significant: career satisfaction, career achievement and career balance with 63% of the variance in QWL. The respondents appeared to be satisfied in respect to the level of QWL (49.5%), career achievement (70.3%), career satisfaction (63.8%), but less so for career balance (36.6%). These findings contribute to an understanding of ways by top management in attempts to attain a career fit between the needs of the employees and the needs of the organization. The role QWL plays in organizations is an understudied issue. The present study opens an avenue for more studies in this direction.

Design and development of sensor based traffic light system

Abstract: The main object of this study was to design and implement a suitable algorithm and its simulation for an intelligent traffic signal simulator. The system developed is able to sense the presence or absence of vehicles within certain range by setting the appropriate duration for the traffic signals to react accordingly. By employing mathematical functions to calculate the appropriate timing for the green signal to illuminate, the system can help to solve the problem of traffic congestion. The simulation of the algorithm of the traffic signal system was done using MATLAB software. Hardware simulation tests were successfully performed on the algorithm implemented into a controller. The new timing scheme that was implemented promises an improvement in the current traffic light system and this system is feasible, affordable and ready to be implemented especially during peak hours. A countdown timer interfacing according to the traffic system using Lab VIEW software was also created.

Key words: Traffic signal system, sensor based traffic light system, traffic congestion

INTRODUCTION

Many traffic light systems operate on a timing mechanism that changes the lights after a given interval. An intelligent traffic light system senses the presence or absence of vehicles and reacts accordingly. The idea behind intelligent traffic systems is that drivers will not spend unnecessary time waiting for the traffic lights to change. An intelligent traffic system detects traffic in many different ways [1].

The older system uses weight as a trigger mechanism [2]. Current traffic systems react to motion to trigger the light changes. Once the infrared object detector picks up the presence of a car, a switch causes the lights to change. In order to accomplish this, algorithms are used to govern the actions of the traffic system. While there are many different programming languages today, some programming concepts are universal in Boolean Logic.
