The Scoop:

Nail Yakupov is the favorite to go first overall in this year upcoming NHL Entry-Draft. He started the season as the favorite, and despite fellow Russian, Mikhail Grigorenko, knocking at his door, he’s managed to maintain top status. He was drafted 2nd overall in the 2010 CHL Import Draft, by the Sarnia Sting. He took the OHL by storm in his rookie season by scoring 49 goals, and 101 points in 65 games, enough to lead the entire CHL in rookie scoring. To top off his impressive rookie season, he took home OHL Rookie of the Year, and CHL Rookie of the Year. Expectations were very high for Yakupov heading into his sophomore season, and draft year. For the most part he did not disappoint. He started the year hot but when he got injured during the World Juniors Championship game his season sort of staggered a bit. He would go on to suffer a couple minor injuries, which would result in missed games, and effected his play. However this hasn’t hurt his draft ranking any, but it has made some question his durability. He still managed to score 31 goals and 69 points in 42 games this season, and he also dished out 9 assists in 6 games played at the World Junior Championships.

Some scouts have said that Nail Yakupov is the best prospect since Sidney Crosby in 2005. He has a lethal shot,explosive skating, and slick hands, not to mention he can play a physical, North American style game. He’s highly competitive and will do anything to win, although he gets caught doing too much at times. From what I’ve seen of Yakupov, he’s capable of taking over a game by himself, and can easily control the pace of the game. He gives it his all every shift, and is usually a difference maker. He loves the sport of hockey, and that’s all he wants to do. In an interview he said that when he comes to the rink he shuts everything out, and just focuses on hockey, this is something that all the greats have the ability to do. On top of his skill he has a great personality, which makes him well liked by teammates. Also since coming from Russia a few years ago his english has improved immensely, which is a nice asset to any team wanting to draft him.

Yakupov is an exciting player and which ever team drafts him, which will surely be at 1st Overall, will have a potential franchise player. He’s skilled enough to make an immediate impact in the NHL, and in a few short years will likely be competing for scoring titles, and major awards. He has publicly said he loves Canada and would love to play on the Edmonton Oilers (They own the 1st Overall pick right now) so I don’t think there will ever be an issue of him not wanting to play in the NHL or leaving the NHL for the KHL, so I don’t think he should be pegged with the “Russian Factor”. Expectations are high for this player but there’s no doubt in my mind, or many others, that he won’t have any trouble living up to them.

The Scoop:

Ryan Murray has been the favorite to be the first defenseman taken in this years draft for awhile. He was the 9th overall selection, of the Everett Silvertips in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft . He played 5 games in the 2008-2009 playoffs, and recorded one assist. His WHL career officially started in the 2009-2010 season, where he racked up 5 goals, and 22 assists in 52 games, which is impressive for a 15 year old defenseman in the WHL. Everything really took off for Murray during the 2010-2011 season,though. He was named captain of the Silvertips at just age 17. He completed 70 games and recorded 6 goals,40 assists and 45 penalty minutes. He almost made Team Canada’s World Junior team, and captained Team Canada at the U-18′s as a 17 year old, where he put up 3 goals and 10 points, in 7 games. Expectations were high for Murray heading into this season (His draft year) and he was up for the challenge. He suffered an injury early in the season which had some worried that he might not be able to play on Team Canada at the World Junior Championships but he recovered in time and helped Canada take home Bronze. He was every a very good defenseman at the tournament and played a big role on the team. He finished the 2011-2012 season with 9 goals and 31 points in 46 games.

Although most had Ryan Murray the top rated defenseman in this draft, not everyone did. Mathew Dumba was also favored by many to be the first D-man taken in this draft but Murray separated himself from the rest, much like Yakupov did. Murray is the whole package in a defenseman. He has great shot, that’s both accurate and hard. He has smooth skating and great control with the puck, much like NHL greats Scott Niedermayer and Nik Lidstrom. He isn’t flashy so he normally will make smart, short, accurate passes to break out. He isn’t an overly offensive player, which means his transition to the NHL will likely have him being more of a stay at home defender. Again like Niedermayer and Lidstrom he has good size but isn’t overly physical, instead play more of a positional, and technical style of defense. One of Murray’s greatest assets is that he doesn’t get rattled. As I’m sure most hockey fans saw, at the World Junior semi-final game he was the victim of some bad luck. He didn’t let it rattled him and the second half of the game he was relied upon heavily. His poise with the puck, and without it is incredible considering his age and will be will be well liked by NHL GM’s. He also has great leadership qualities which will likely get him a “C” sooner than later in the NHL.

Ryan Murray is arguably the most NHL ready of all the prospects, and will most likely be in the NHL right away. He’s a great all-round player, who can step into an NHL team right away and make a difference. There’s no guarentee’s that Columbus is going to use their 2nd overall pick to take him, but if I had to put money on it, I would say Murray is going 2nd overall. He’s a future captain in the NHL and will be the backbone of some teams blueline for many years.

The Scoop:

For much of the first half of the season Mikhail Grigorenko held the number 1 spot on a lot of scouts rankings. He would eventually settle for second but for an import player playing his first year in a brand new country, number 2 is very impressive. On the note of impressive, Mikhail Grigorenko has a very impressive rookie season with the Quebec Remparts, scoring 40 goals and 85 points in just 59 games. He had an alright World Junior Championship, scoring 2 goals and 5 points in 6 games, on route to capturing a silver medal for his country, Russia. All though he didn’t completely dominate, it was still an impressive showing, especially since he played most of it hurt. he had 10 points in 11 playoff games, which many deemed a “disappointment” but it has recently come out that he’s been suffering from Mono since before the playoffs.

Many scouts consider Grigorenko to be very close to Yakupov in rankings, and consider the two players to be ranked 1(a) and 1(b). However there are other scouts (ie Craig Button) that have Grigorenko ranked much, much lower then that. Like many Russians, scouts question his consistency from game to game and his drive. With that said, he plays for Patrick Roy and Roy demands the most out of his players and has spoke highly of Grigorenko’s work ethic, so perhaps it was the mono that had Grigorenko playing inconsistent at times. Despite these few issues, Grigorenko is still a highly ranked prospect with loads of potential. He’s big and has tons of skill, which is where a lot of the Malkin comparisons come into play. He has a lethal shot, and an elite set of hands to match. Like many great players, his vision on the ice is next to none. He doesn’t play a physical game but when other players start to play physical with him, that’s when he really begins to shine. He plays a solid two-way game, which is why he was a plus 35 this season.

He’s not likely to go first overall anymore, but he’ll definitely get a good look by the Columbus Blue Jackets at number 2 and if he doesn’t go there he’ll surely go 3rd overall to the Montreal Canadians. Even if I’m wrong he’ll most likely be a top 5 pick and will play in the NHL right away. He’s a big, skilled, two-way center, with potential to be a number 1 center very soon. Big, number 1 centers are hard to come by in the NHL so I think any team would be happy to have him. He racked up numerous awards in his first, and likely last QMJHL season, so I think it’s fair to say Mikhail Grigorenko’s future is very bright.

Q&A with Garret Sparks,Toronto Maple Leafs Prospect

PuckCentral: Overall, how do you feel the season went for the team and you personally?

Garret Sparks: I feel we over achieved as a team, which is what you always strive to do. On a personal level I thought I played well but could've been better at times. It was a good season but next season will hopefully build on that and be even better.

PC: You obviously made a big jump from playing 19 games to 59. Was it a challenge at all to play so many more games?

GS: It was a challenge but it was something that I was ready for going into the season. I worked all summer to put myself in a position to succeed and this summer is going to be more of the same as I hope to reach, if not pass that number of games played again next year.

PC: You were drafted really late last year, was it nerve racking at all having to wait?

GS: It wasn't really nerve racking just because I didn't really expect to go. For me I just felt fortunate getting drafted.

PC: Does being picked so late give you any extra drive to succeed?

GS: I've had the same drive to succeed since I first started this dream. Being drafted is just another step along the way. I would say it makes me work harder, realizing that my dream is getting closer and closer, but where I was taken doesn't have any influence on my work ethic.

PC: I know the season just ended but what are some of your goals heading into the offseason and next season?

GS: I just want to continue to get better. Next year is a big year for our team and a big year for me personally. I just want to come in and be in the best shape of my life and play every game I can. My main goal is just to return in the best shape of my life.

PC: I get the vibe that being in great shape is very important to you? Would you say thats true?

GS: It's the one thing that I really need to do to take my game to the next level. It's been my main focuses for years now.

PC: I've interviewed a lot of goalies lately but this is a question I haven't asked yet. You play in a league that's highly regarded for its skill and talent. Who are some of the toughest players to stop or play against?

GS: That's a good question. It isn't like I pay attention to who's shooting, but you play teams enough and you know when guys are out there. Tobias Reider and Michael Catenacci on Kitchener as well as Stefan Noesen, J.T Miller, and Mitchell Heard on Plymouth are all great players and good guys. Gregg McKegg may have given me the toughest time out of anyone in this league though.

PC: Well luckily for you he'll most likely be your teammate in the future rather then opponent ha-ha. Growing up what was your favourite team?

GS: Well as much as I'd like to say the Blackhawks, they weren't very good for many years. My team was the Dallas Stars. Loved the jerseys and guys like Eddie Belfour, Mike Modano, Derian Hatcher and the rest were great. Dallas beating Buffalo is the first Stanley Cup I remember.

PC: Dallas, that's interesting! Who was your favourite player growing up?

GS: My favourite player had to be Mike Modano. But my favourite goalies were Nikoli Khabibulin and Marty Turco.

PC: What aspect of your game do you take the most pride in?

GS: I wouldn't say I care about one thing I do more than the other, I look to keep the game as simple as possible. Focus and patience are two things that are very important to me.

PC: This one i meant to ask earlier but forgot. What was it like being drafted to a team like the Maple Leafs?

GS: It has been great. I originally just wanted to get drafted, but after that happened and I got to go to the rookie camps and such, I realized how fortunate I was to be drafted to a team like the Leafs. The resources, facilities and coaches are 2nd to none in the league and they really care about and look after the guys they bring in. It's been a great experience so far and I'm extremely happy with where I ended up.

PC: Sounds like a great organization. Alright, so last question. We ask this to everyone. Who do you try to model your game after or do you just to and be "Garret Sparks"?

GS: Well there's a lot of great goalies out there and I don't think it's beneficial to model your game solely on another person, but I take a lot of what I like from everyone and I try to incorporate it into what I already know works for me. My game is ultimately my game though and it's constantly changing and evolving. I don't like to be defined by one thing I do or have one weakness or strength. In the end all I can ask of myself is to compete to no end and try to keep the puck out of the net.

Q&A With Tyler Bunz

PuckCentral: Your WHL career has ended, so how do you think it went for you? Especially this last season. Would you say overall it was a success?
Tyler Bunz: My experience during my career in the WHL was amazing. The people I met, the coaches I played for, the teammates I played with were all great people and if it weren't for them I don't think my time in the WHL would have been as much fun as it was. My first year and a half were very inconsistent on the ice, but after the Christmas break during my 17 year old season I felt myself become more confident and start playing more consistent. The Medicine Hat Tiger organization was nothing but good to me, and gave me every opportunity to succeed. From being drafted at 14 years old as the first goaltender in Medicine Hat Tiger history to be drafted in the first round, they put all their trust into me to lead the team to wins. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be where I'm at today. I believe my career was a success. From being drafted into the NHL, attending the Canadian World Junior camp, signing a pro contract and setting records in the franchise, I feel happy with the way my junior career went.

PC: How has your experience in Medicine Hat help you grow as a player and a person?
TB: It challenged me to grow up faster then most kids do at a young age. Moving from home at age 16 to chase my dream of being an NHL goalie was not easy at first. You obviously miss your family and friends, but its the sacrifices you have to make. My billet family made it real easy to adjust. Bill and Sandy Standish are great people, and made my time in Medicine Hat more enjoyable as I had a caring couple take me into their home. Over the years you do mature as a player and person, and it not only made me feel good, but my family noticed as well as too how much I matured.

PC:Your professional career has started, how's that been so far, and what's been the biggest difference between the pro's and Junior?
TB: The speed of the game is the biggest difference. Not only are the games faster, but practices as well. The guys are a lot older then in junior and can skate and shoot faster then what I've seen for the past 4 years. But being in Oklahoma City for the past week and a bit, it's been a great experience. The weather, culture and people here are great. The guys on the team are awesome guys and have made me feel very welcome over my stay. They won their first playoff series in franchise history last night, so it was pretty cool to be there and be apart of it.

PC: Obviously it must have been tough to be cut from Team Canada and you handled it with a lot of class ,do you feel it has made you a better,or stronger player?
TB: Yes definitely. In my mind there was two ways I could of handled it. 1) Take it the hard way, give up and pout about it or 2) take it as a learning experience, grow from it and know there's things to be worked on in my game. I did choice 2. The only person I can blame for not making the team is me. I didn't perform as well as I should of in tryouts and I was the first to admit that. So I knew there was things to work on in my game and I went back to Medicine Hat that day, played that night and played one of my better games. It wasn't easy, but I wasn't going to dwell on being cut. My team needed me to be at my best and lead them to a win. The next few months I put being cut to the back of my mind and just played hockey. I love this game, I wouldn't jeopardize becoming less interested in the game because of one setback. It made me compete and play harder.

PC: You were drafted by the Edmonton Oilers,how special was it being drafted to a team in your home province of Alberta?
TB: It was amazing. To this day I can't describe the feeling I still have. I grew up watching them my whole life and being from St. Albert it was truly a dream come true.

PC: You're most likely a few years away from the NHL, but do you feel confident in the Edmonton organization? There's a lot of good goalies in the organization, but you're arguably one of the best.
TB: I just take it one day at a time. Every time I'm on the ice I try to improve. What happens in my career is up to me, so I can only focus on improving my game and hopefully impress the right people in the Oiler organization.

PC: What part of your game do you take the most pride in?

TB: Playing the puck. I love to be engaged in the game and every little play I make helps you stay focused. So by me going out and playing the puck and making smart plays, it not only makes the game easier for my defense men, but also keeps me focused and in the moment during the game. I finished with 13 points, I believe, in my 4 years and I take a lot of pride in that.

PC: We ask this to everyone. Is there anyone you try to model your game after or do you just try and be "Tyler Bunz"?

TB: Both, it's good to have someone to model your game after. But ultimately it's you who is in net. I look at Marc Andre Fleury a lot during video, as we both play somewhat similar styles of play. Also, with watching Brayden Holtby in playoffs with the Capitals, I've noticed we play alike as well. But when it comes down to it, I'm the one in control of myself so I take what I've been taught and try to apply it game situations as best I can, and hopefully good results come from it.

CHL Playoff Finals Breakdown

CHL Playoff Finals Breakdown

WHL:

In the WHL the Portland Winter Hawks will be taking on the Edmonton Oil Kings. This should be a high profile matchup and plenty of skill to go both ways. The Oil Kings have been dominant this year but the Winter Hawks have the skill and drive to push them and ultimately win this match up. The Oil Kings will be relying heavily on the likes of Curtis Lazar, Griffin Reinhart, Mark Pysyk, Michael St. Croix and Martin Gernat to help them succeed. Lazar has had the best playoffs out of any Oil King so far (16 points in 13 and will be key if they want to beat the Winter Hawks. Reinhart,Pysyk and Gernat will need to shut down Ty Rattie, Brad Ross, Sven Bartschi and Marcel Noebels if they want to have success in this series. The Winter Hawks also have some firepower from the back end in Joe Morrow and Derrick Pouliot and will need to be kept under control by the Oil Kings if they want to have success. With the talent the two of these teams posses it could and probably very well will come down to whichever team gets the better goaltending in this series. Laurent Brossoit has been absolutely lights out to this point in the playoffs with 13 wins, a 1.65 GAA and a .944 SV%. The Winterhawks haven’t quite gotten the same kind of goaltending out of Mac Carruth this season, but if they can get to Brossoit early and Carruth can make the saves when needed the Winter Hawks could take this series and be headed to the Memorial Cup.

Prediction: Edmonton Oil Kings in Six Games.

OHL:

The OHL Finals is a matchup of the 2 best teams in the regular season. Each team comes into the series having not really been tested in their 3^rd round matchup, the London Knights having faced the Kitchener Rangers made easy work of them and beat them in 4 straight and the Niagara Ice Dogs dispatched the Ottawa 67’s in 5 games. Each team has plenty of goal scorers and big point producers to go around, London possessing Seth Griffin, Olli Maatta, Austin Watson, Vladislav Namestnikov, Max Domi, Greg McKegg, Jared Knight and Jared Tinordi. The Ice Dogs not to be outdone boast a lineup of Freddie and Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Strome, Tom Kuhnhackl, Brett Ritchie, Jamie Oleksiak, Andrew Agozzino and Mark Visentin in net. The key to winning this series will be containing the big guys on either team. Dougie Hamilton and Jamie Oleksiak will be very difficult for the Knights offence to penetrate and may take a game or two to figure out. The Ice Dogs should have a much easier time getting past Maatta and Tinordi but it won’t be a cake walk for either side. Much like the WHL series the teams are loaded with position players and the series could hinge on the success of either goaltender. Michael Houser had a very good year and has continued that play here in the postseason, Visentin however out played him in the regular season and has outplayed him to this point in the post season. However he has a tendency to be shaky in big games and I expect much of the same as this series wears on.

Prediction: London Knights in Six games.

QMJHL:

The defending Memorial Cup champion Saint John Sea Dogs are looking to win their 2^nd straight QMJHL Championship and the teams 2^nd straight Memorial Cup. The Sea Dogs have been the team to beat all year and it certainly will not be any different in this series. The Sea Dogs did face their toughest test of last round against Chicoutimi Sagueneens which they still won in 5 games but were forced to overtime in 3 of those 5. Their opponent the Rimouski Oceanic are a surprise team here in the Finals. No one really expected them to get to this point knocking off Val-D’Or, Blainville-Boisbriand and Halifax to earn a berth. The Oceanic may have caught a break however with Jonathan Huberdeau serving a 2 game suspension they have a chance to get out to a start they may not of otherwise had and make this series much closer then what it was originally supposed to be. Charlie Coyle, Zack Phillips, Tomas Jurco, Nathan Beaulieu, Jonathan Huberdeau and Stanislav Galiev matchup very well against the likes of Jakub Culek, Petr Straka and Jerome Gauthier-Leduc and will most likely overwhelm them and completely dominate this series. This years playoffs have been full of surprises and the Oceanic might catch the perfect wave and ride it all the way to the Memorial Cup, but expect much of what we have seen so far the Sea Dogs dominating their opponent and the other team never really standing a chance.

Prediction: Saint John Sea Dogs in Five Games.

Q&A With Jack Campbell of the Dallas Stars/Texas Stars

PuckCentral: I'll start by asking how you think the season has went for you personally and for the team? You guys were in a tight playoff race so it must have been exciting?
Jack Campbell: My season in the OHL was definitely more consistent this year than last season. I feel my game has gotten better every single day. Whether it is my on ice skills or mental toughness the OHL has definitely challenged me to be my best every single day. The playoff race was a lot of fun, despite the disappointment of not reaching the playoffs, as a team we played as hard as we could but we just didn't catch enough breaks and the consistency wasn't where it needed to be in order to be an elite team.

PC: With the playoff race so tight do you feel any added pressure to perform or was it just business as usual for you?

JC: For me I always put more pressure on myself than anyone could possible put on me. So I truly enjoy the spotlight in leading my team every single night. I love the pressure games where your season could be on the line...that's simply what I play the game for. Just going out every single day and competing as hard as I can to help my team come out on top is what I love most about playing hockey.

PC: I just want to take a quick step back and ask you what winning the gold medal at the WJC in 2010 has done for you and your development? You basically came out of nowhere and in the eyes of many, won that tournament for the USA.

JC: I've been so fortunate to have so many great hockey memories thus far in my young career, and that gold medal in Saskatoon in front of the entire country of Canada was so thrilling, its something I will remember vividly the rest of my life. The guys on that team were so talented but we also had such great character from the coaches all the way to the players. Thats what allowed us to be as successful as we were.

PC: What did it mean to you to win the Top Goaltender in the 2011 WJC?
JC: As far as the 2011 WJC is concerned, it was definitely a disappointing finish as I had my heart set on winning the gold medal. But personally, being named the top goalie was such an honor and it truly showed what a great team I had in front of me. Our defenceman were so talented it made my job so easy.

PC: The last World Junior tournament was obviously disappointing for you and the Team because of the high expectations, what do you think the downfall was? And there must have been plenty of positives to take from it, what would a couple of them be in your opinion?

JC: This years WJC was heartbreaking. Truthfully, people dont understand just how difficult the WJC tournament really is. It isn't so much about the talent each team possess as much as it is about how well each team gels in the short amount of time they have with each other. We just didn't have that chemistry we had in Saskatoon, and as a result other teams were able to exploit that.

PC: You were drafted by the Dallas Stars fairly high at 11th overall in 2010, did they express a lot of interest in you prior to the draft, or was it a complete surprise for you when you were drafted?

JC: Prior to the draft there were several teams with high picks that showed lots of interest, Dallas being one of them. Therefore, when my name was called it wasn't so much a surprise I went that high as it was a surprise Dallas chose me over my good buddy Cam Fowler. I feel so honored Dallas chose me as they could have easily chose Cam, but it shows they have a long term plan for me in their organization and I am excited to do whatever I can to exceed their expectations.

PC: What made you decided to come over to the OHL?
JC: My decision to choose Windsor over the University of Michigan was solely based on what I believed would better prepare me for the pros. The NCAA game is extremely skilled and there is no doubt a lot of positives about it. However, for me I wanted to challenge myself to playing 45 plus games a season, an NHL style playoff format, and play against other high quality players around my age. I learned so much in my two seasons in the OHL, I feel so confident in my game now after seeing what I needed to work on in the OHL.

PC: I have to ask... Are you at all aware that you were drafted to HC Dinamo Minsk in the 7th round,70th overall in KHL? And do you ever see yourself playing there? (I sure hope you don't haha)
JC: I am aware of being drafted into the KHL but my goal since I was 7 years old was to win a Stanley Cup, and that will never change. I want to be Dallas's franchise goaltender and I am willing to put all the work in so I have that chance when the time is right.

PC: So this last question is one that we ask everyone. Who do you try to model your game after, or do you just try and be "Jack Campbell"?
JC: I definitely play my own style game just like any NHL goalie you see now days. But a few of my favorites to learn from are Marc-Andre Fleury, Pekka Rinne, and Kari Lehtonen. I am always looking for ways to improve and there is no better way to do that than watching the best in the game.

Zemgus Girgensons Q&A

PuckCentral: I'll start by asking how you feel your season has gone? For you personally and for your team?
Zemgus Girgensons: I think the team has been doing its job and playing really good. The team and as well myself we have been through a lot of ups and downs. I and my team has faced a lot of challenges this year and I think they are just making us stronger. My season has been full of injuries so I can't say its been a good season but I can tell you I have been enjoying it with my teammates.

PC: Do you feel any added pressure to perform down the stretch with this being one of your last chances to impress scouts?
ZG: I never had really felt any pressure about impressing someone or worrying about my draft status. I just try to play my game, enjoy it and help my team to do good.

PC: Also, have you felt pressure at all during the year, with this being your draft year?
ZG: As I already said in last question I don't feel any pressure about these things. I just let them to fall in place by themselves.

PC: Rumour on the street is you played two periods with a broken jaw? Did you think it was broken at first and just played through it or did it surprise you to find out it was broken? I'm not sure of the whole story but it seems pretty remarkable, and I'm sure the scouts and NHL GM's will love that kind of toughness and determination.
ZG: When I delivered the hit to the guy I understood something is not right. I just kept playing and in the excitement of the game you kinda forget about the pain. I didn't think it's broken 'till i saw the xray.

PC: Obviously Latvia wasn't favored to win the World Junior Championships but considering the division you guys were in, I think you performed well. What have you taken away from that experience? Do you think it's made you a better player?
ZG: I think it was a great experience playing on that team especially being one of the underdog teams. As again that was a just another challenge for me and I think it made me a better player for sure.

PC: Any favorite memories from the WJC that stand out that you'd like to share?
ZG: I think the whole tournament was great and really well organized. Every team was treated as professionals and we enjoyed that.

PC: At this point you're ranked very high in the draft rankings, some have you in the top 10, some have you just outside, does it give you any extra push to try and get yourself inside the top 10?
ZG: It's something that I can't control right now with my latest injury but my plan was try to get there by playing really good in playoffs and winning the Clark Cup.

PC: You're likely to be the first ever Latvian born player taken in the first round, how big of an honor is this for you? And what does this mean for Latvian hockey?
ZG: It will be great honor if that happens and I'm always proud to represent the country I am from. I think that would give a great spark in younger kids in Latvia that everything is possible and if you work hard and dedicate yourself to it you can achieve it.
PC: What made you decide to come to America for hockey, especially at a young age?
ZG: It was just that hockey in Latvia kinda stops at age 14 and kids are trying to get out of the country to improve their game. Most kid at that age choose to stay in Europe closer to home but i decided to come to North America.

PC: You're committed to the University of Vermont, what made you decide to choose Vermont, and even more, what made you decide to go the “NCAA” route? Obviously that's a little out of the norm for Europeans.
ZG: I thought that NCAA will be best fit for me to grow as a person and develop as a hockey player. I chose UVM becuase I played in Vermont for a year and I will feel comfortable adjusting to it. And of course I loved the coaching staff.

PC: What can Zemgus Girgensons bring to an NHL club?
ZG: I always would bring the highest intensity work ethic and team first attitude every single day and try to make the team better by my strenghts.

PC: Finally our last question, and we ask this to everyone. Who do you try and model your game after? Or do you just try and be “Zemgus Girgensons”?
ZG: I don't try to really play like someone but I think my game is similar to Ryan Kesler.

2012 Mock Draft 2.0

We're going to do something a little different this time around, we're going to each give our individual Mock Draft. So you're going to see two drafts here.

Bradley's Draft:

1-Edmonton: Nail Yakupov (Best player in the draft. I think Edmonton trades down though.)
2-Columbus: Ryan Murray (Columbus needs to once again rebuild and Murray is the best place to start.)
3-Montreal: Mikhail Grigorenko (He has crazy skill. Plus there's a good chance his junior coach could be coaching the Habs next season.)
4-New York Islanders: Filip Forsberg (Big, skilled winger. Will compliment John Tavares very nicely.)
5-Toronto: Alex Galchenyuk (Could probably go higher but teams will hesitate because of his injury.)
6-Anaheim: Griffin Reinhart (Toss up between him and Dumba. Reinhart is the safer pick, plus they already have Fowler.)
7-Minnesota: Mathew Dumba (Simply too good to pass up. High risk high reward type player.)
8-Carolina: Radek Faksa (Really safe pick. Plus they took Murphy last year so I can't see them taking a defenseman this year.)
9-Winnipeg: Cody Ceci (Hard to choose between him or Trouba, went with my gut.)
10-Tampa Bay: Morgan Rielly (Great puck moving defenseman, which is what Tamp needs.)
11-Washington: Jacob Trouba (Caps get a very good two-way defenseman with great size.)
12-Buffalo: Teuvo Teravainen (Scoring winger. Should blend in well with the rest of Buffalo's young forwards.)
13-Dallas: Brendan Gaunce (Should be a great fit with Jamie Benn. Hard worker, who can grind it out and score.)
14-Calgary: Sebastian Collberg (Calgary needs offense. Collberg provides that.)
15-Ottawa: Pontus Aberg (Sens love their Swedes, plus their defense is good and young,another forward wouldn't hurt.)
16-Washington: Olli Maatta (Could easily take a forward here but Hunter coached him in junior so that could be an influence.)
17-Florida: Derrick Pouliot (Once again I agree with Trevor that he has potential to run Florida's PP once Campbell is gone, as long as he's developed properly.)
18-Columbus: Zemgus Girgensons (If he slips to Columbus here they'll be laughing. Great prospect who can potentially be a top 6 center)
19-San Jose: Slater Koekkoek (Like many players in this years draft, injuries derailed his season. He could have competed for a top 10 pick. Should be a solid defender someday.)
20-Phoenix: Tomas Hertl (Might be a bit off the board but he's a good player with lots of potential. Defense is solid so they need to start drafting forwards.)
21-Chicago: Andrei Vasilevski (Chicago's goaltending is questionable. Vasilevski is the best goalie available so they should take him.)
22-New Jersey: Malcolm Subban (Have potential in Wedgewood but Subban is a great goalie with tons of potential. Can't afford to only have one good goalie prospect in their system.)
23-Tampa Bay: Martin Frk (Missed a lot of time with a concussion, so draft stock has fallen. Tampa can afford to be patient with him. Could be a steal at 23.)
24-Boston: Brady Skjei (Solid defenseman with loads of potential. Needs a team who can develop him and be patient with him and Boston can do just that.)
25-Philadelphia: Hampus Lindholm (To be honest I don't know much about him but from what I've heard he's a solid defenseman, which is what Philly needs.)
26-Buffalo: Phillip Di Giuseppe (Many thought he should have made Team Canada at the WJC. Solid two-way player with a knack for scoring. Should fit in well with Buffalo's forwards.)
27-Pittsburgh: Tanner Pearson (A bit of a wild card since he's already been passed up in two drafts. Took his game to another level this season but needs a team who can be patient with him.)
28-St.Louis: Matt Finn (Potential to be a top 3 or 4 defenseman. Some people would have him going much higher.)
29-New York Rangers: Oscar Dansk (I know this is a bit of a bold prediction since the NYR have Lunqvist but he's getting to older now so they can take the proper time to develop Dansk and by the time he's ready Lundqvist will be at the end of his career.)
30-Vancouver: Colton Scissons (He doesn't play too far away so I'm sure the Canucks have seen plenty of him. He's a hard working player who can score. Also has great leadership qualities.)

Trevors Draft:

Nail Yakupov

During the month of November I had the luxury of being able to go to the Subway Super Series game 3 in Ottawa.For those that don't know the Super Series is a 6 game series between QMJHL,OHL,WHL allstar teams and a Team Russia junior team. I was very excited for this game, it consisted of many of the top OHL players all in one game, but when I saw that Russian sniper, Nail Yakupov, of the Sarnia Sting was selected to play that game with Russia, I knew it would be a special game.

I expected Yakupov to live up to his hype as the top draft eligible prospect, but he did so much more then just live up to the hype. He was a game changer every time he was on the ice. When Yakupov stepped on, all the momentum switched over to Team Russia, he controlled the pace, the puck always followed him. I've never witnessed anything like it. In a game that consisted of most of the top OHL players, most of which were already drafted, and the best junior players Russia had to offer, this draft eligible kid was easily the best player out there. And after the game I had the chance to meet him, and despite the loss, he took the time to sign an autographs for fans, and take pictures, he could have ignored them like a lot of the Russian players did but Yakupov didn't. He isn't just a great hockey player, he's also a great guy.

Yakupov's biggest downfall, which is no fault of his own, is that he's Russian. As many of us know Russian hockey players have a very bad reputation when it comes to North American hockey. The stereotype is that they're lazy,one dimensional players, who care about nothing more then money. On top of that bad rep, a few players have left the NHL for their home countries league, the KHL,which usually pays more.This only worsens the image of Russian hockey players. Yakupov gets the same knock on him that every other Russian player gets, lazy,plays with no heart or drive, not a team player,he'll run to the KHL first chance he gets,etc. I'll be the first to admit that I was hard on Russians, but since I started following Yakupov and Grigorenko I've had a change of heart. When I saw Yakupov play, he played with more heart and drive then any other player there, he competed harder then anyone else. The effort was always there. I haven't seen him play since, other then the World Juniors on TV but I know he always competes, he's that type of player. He loves the sport of hockey, I saw a piece on him and he talked about how when he goes to the rink and he just shuts everything out, it's just hockey. That's the type of passion you want from a player, it's what separates elite players, from good players, puts them above everyone else, with that said Yakupov is an elite player. Yakupov came to Canada to play in the OHL, and he left one year before a lot of Russian players do when they come to play in the CHL. He wants to play in the NHL, and he proved that by coming over here two years before his draft rather then one. He could have stayed in Russia and gotten paid a lot of money to play there, but he still chose to come here, I think that says a lot about him. I think a lot of the "lack of heart, or passion" comments come from people who read, or saw that he skipped out on the CHL Top Prospects game, but what people fail to see is that at the end of the day his doctor told him he shouldn't attend the game since he was just coming back from an injury. Yes he was playing with Sarnia for a few games before the Prospects Game but he you can bet his minutes were lowered, and he was taking it easier then normal, but at the Prospects Game he would have had to go all out, and play against players who were going all out, so it was probably best for him to sit it out.

Yakupov does have his faults though, but he's young and most players do. Yes it's true, his play in his own zone is average at best, he doesn't help out all that much without the puck, but he doesn't hurt the team by it. He also plays a bit to physical, and wild at times which sets himself up for big hits, and injuries. All these faults can be fixed with proper coaching, and maturing though. The positives that Nail Yakupov can bring to the team that drafts him are far greater then any of the negatives. He has game breaking speed, and a lethal shot, plus he has a matching set of hands to go with the speed and shot as well. He uses his teammates more then people think too. I'm sure a lot of you have seen his famous interview after the Canada-Russia game, some people were commenting saying he was arrogant, but that was just a kid who was truly excited about beating his countries biggest rival. In my opinion that interview is a perfect example of the passion, and heart he puts into the game. Obviously english isn't his first language so some of the wording may have came out as cocky but I think he meant well by the comments.

Nail Yakupov may be Russian but he is the top prospect in this years draft and there aren't many people who disagree with that. I think it's unfair for people to associate Yakupov, Mikhail Grigorenko, and even Alex Galchenyuk, despite the fact that he's technically American, with the old Russian stereotype. I think it's time to embrace this new rising of Russian stars and give them a fair chance in the eyes of all fans. These players are all extremely talented and every team in the NHL should want them.

Top 15 Prospects

This list will consist of my top 15 prospects, however I'll be excluding players in North American professional leagues (NHL/AHL).

1)Dougie Hamilton,Defenseman(2011-9th Overall, Boston):
He's a massive (6'4,198lbs) Two-Way defensmen who handles the puck extremely well but it's his incredibly smooth skating that has everyone paying attention. He can play a physical,defencive game, as well as a dominating offensive game (50GP-17G-55A-72P). He's not expected to put up those kinds of numbers in the NHL but I think he has top 2 D-Man potential, and will step into a top 4 role with Boston very soon. He's a leader on and off the ice, and under the supervision of one of the NHL's best defensemen,Zedano Chara, he could be a future captain of the Bruins. He's the kind of guy you would build your blueline around and I think he'll be considered a "steal" at 9th in a few years.

2)Jonathan Huberdeau,Center(2011-3rd Overall,Florida):
Huberdeau is a highly skilled forward who skates fast, and has a decent pair of hands to match that speed. He has great vision and scores goals like they're nothing, however at the WJC this winter he showed he's an incredible playmaker by setting up Mark Stone about 15,000 times a game and finishing the tournament with 8 assists. The Florida Panthers feel they have a franchise player in Huberdeau and are taking all the right steps in developing him, which started with sending him back to the Seadogs after a great pre-season. I think it's safe to say Huberdeau will be in Florida next season and is an early favourite to take home Rookie of the Year(I know it's still WAY to early).

3)Vladmir Tarasenko,RightWing(2010-16th Overall,St.Louis):
I know what you're all thinking, "Where's Kuznetsov, or Granlund?". Well to that I say, Tarasenko is simply a better prospect. Tarasenko is a big physical winger(6'0,202lbs) with an incredible amount of skill. He was the captain of an underdog Russian team who won Gold at the WJC a few years ago, and was a big part of their historical comeback. He's played incredibly well this season in the KHL, putting up 23 goals,and 24 assists in 54 games, not bad for a 20 year old. I think if he comes to the NHL next season he'll make a huge impact on the St.louis Blues and could also be a favourite for the Calder.

4)Evgeny Kuznetsov,Center(2010-26th Overall,Washington):
Kuznetsov is an extremely skilled forward, with tremendous skating, and a deadly shot. He's considered by many (Not me) to be the best prospect in the world. He's had two good WJC, but despite leading the tournament in points this year (14), he only had points in two games. I think he's an unprecitable player, who's a little too cocky for my liking, but you can't argue his skill. When or if he comes over he'll likely fall into Washingtons top 6 right away.

5)Mikael Granlund,Center(2010-9th Overall,Minnesota):
Mikael Granlund, like Kuznetsov, is regarded as one of the best prospects in the world. He lit up the Finnish League as a 17 year old with 40 points in 43 games, and has continued to dominate. He has world class playmaking abilities, and has hockey sense that is next to none, however it's his skating, and size that could slow him down at the next level. With all that said anyone who watches hockey knows that being a small player doesn't mean much if you're smart player, which Granlund is. If he comes over next season I don't think he'll be a "huge" impact but he'll get points and develop nicely on a young Minnesota team.

6)Brandon Gormley,Defenseman(2010-13th Overall,Phoenix):
Brandon Gormley is a solid two-way defenseman that just about any team would love to have in their system right now, which makes you wonder why he fell to 13th overall in 2010. He won't dazzle you with his hands, or constant huge checks, but he gets the job done at both ends of the ice. I think once he develops more he'll get decent time on both the powerplay and penalty kill.

7)Sven Baertschi,LeftWing(2011-13th Overall,Calgary):
Sven Baertschi has proved this season that he's an pure offensive dynamo, plain and simple. He averaged 2 points per game this season in the WHL (47GP-33G-61A-94P) and scored 3 goals in 5 games with the Flames. His impressive play with the Flames is the reason he's so high on my list. He should be with the Flames full time next season, and if he can play like he did in his first 5 games, he could be considered an early favourite for Calder.

8)Ryan Strome,Center(2011-5th Overall,NYI):
Ryan Strome is a crafty playmaker, with hands that just about any hockey player would dream about of having(Just youtube "Ryan Strome"). He has decent size(6'1,183lbs) but needs to get stronger. I've had the luxury to see him play quite a bit this season and he's impressed me, but in small doses. I think with the right development he'll be a great NHLer who compliments John Tavares nicely.

9)Charlie Coyle,Center(2010-28th Overall,San Jose--Traded to Minnesota):
Charlie Coyle was a key piece in the trade that sent Brent Burns from Minnesota to San Jose. After the WJC, in which Coyle represented America, he left Boston College to go play for the defending Memorial Cup Champions, the Saint John Seadogs. He's played extremely well for the Seadogs and has developed nice chemistry with fellow Wild Prospect Zack Phillips.

10)Brandon Saad,LeftWing(2011-43rd Overall,Chicago):
Brandon Saad is a big winger who can play a physical game defencive game, as well as a skilled offensive game. He slipped in the draft, but still made a very good Chicago Blackhawks team out of training camp, but was sent down after 2 games. In my opinion the first round of this years OHL playoffs has really been a coming out party for Saad, after he dominated a highly skilled Sarnia Sting team.

11)Mark Scheifele,Center(2011-7th Overall,Winnipeg):
Mark Scheifele is a big playmaking center with great hands and knack for scoring. Despite his size he's not really a physical player and his skating could definitely improve. Impressed a lot of people by making the Jets out of training camp but hasn't really impressed at all at the junior level this season, which is why he didn't crack my top 10.

12)Jakob Silfverberg,RightWing(2009-39th Overall,Ottawa):
Jakob Silfverberg isn't exactly a "high-profile" prospect and flew under the radar, but when he was named MVP of SEL people are starting to take notice. He was 2nd in scoring with 24 goals and 54 points in 49 games, which is impressive for a 21 year old. He's a gritty winger who can get it done in both ends of the ice, and will likely be part of Senators top 6 next season. Sens fans should put Zibanejad on the back burner and really pay attention to this guy.

13)Ty Rattie,RightWing(2011-32nd Overall,St.louis):
Ty Rattie is pure offense. He put up 57 goals, and 121 points in 69 games this season in the WHL. He's smart with the puck, which allows him to make plays, and find open teammates. He needs to play a more complete game and get stronger physically before he'll be able to produce in the NHL, but his potential his high.

14)Nathan Beaulieu,Defenseman(2011-17th Overall,Montreal):
Nathan Beaulieu is a big time offensive defenseman, with great vision and skating. He might jump into the rush a little too much, and take too many risks but as he matures he'll learn when to take those chances. As the case for many offensive defenseman, he needs to work on his defencive play more. He'll be able to anchor the Montreal powerplay for years to come.

15)Petr Mrazek,Goaltender(2010-141st Overall,Detroit):
This years WJC was a coming out party for the Czech goaltender. He won the "Top Goaltender" of the Tournament award and put himself on the map as an elite prospect. I know he's somewhat of an "off the board" prospect but I've had the luxury to watch him play several times this season and he's one of the best goalie prospects out there, I also thought I needed a goalie on this list. He has a great glove hand, and has cat-like reflexes. He has decent size and has great positioning. It's only fitting that Detroit would have drafted this kid 141st overall and I think in a few seasons he'll be pushing Jimmy Howard for time in Detroit.

Sean Monahan(Ottawa 67's) Interview

Sean Monahan is a center for the Ottawa 67's and is regarded by many as a potenital top 3 pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. He took the the time to answer some questions for us after the Ottawa 67's-Niagara Icedogs game on March.9th, 2012.(5-1 loss for the 67's).

PuckCentral: Obviously it was a tough loss tonight, but what kind of positives can you take from it?
Sean Monahan: We know what to expect from them the next time we play them which is the following weekend, so it's something we know to expect.

PuckCentral: In my opinion you were the best player in the third, how would you say you played this game?
Sean: I think it was a tough battle there ,not all the bounces went our way but I think we all battled through, so not a bad game overall.

PuckCentral: There was a bit of a big fight there in the third, what are your thoughts on people trying to take fighting out of junior hockey?
Sean: I don't think it's a good thing, hockey is a game of emotions, which fighting sometimes involves, so I don't agree with taking that out of the game.

PuckCentral: With guys liek Toffoli, this is their last season, is there any added pressure to perform well in the playoffs for them?
Sean: Well there's always a lot of pressure in the playoffs for sure, but with guys like that there's a little bit more pressure because they want to succeed so it's kind of helping them with their future.

PuckCentral: How has a players like Toffolli and Prince helped you?
Sean: Well they're great players and they've played in the league for a few years so they taught me the ways and you kind of learn by watching them in practice and how they react in games.

PuckCentral: At this point do you feel any added pressure for the draft?
Sean: It's pretty early so im not looking too far ahead at that right now.

PuckCentral: Craig Button actually asked me to ask you this(Through Twitter), What's it like having to wait another year for the draft?
Sean: Well obviously I'm pretty anxious for the draft but patience is key so I'm just going to go from there.

PuckCentral: Having a higher profile guy on the team like Ceci, he's obviously expected to go high in the draft, is that helping you prepare yourself at all?
Sean: Yeah, just watching what he's going through and how he has to react to all the media and that kind of stuff, so I know what to expect going into next year.

PuckCentral: A lot of top OHL guys have gone high in the draft, like Tavares,Hall, or Seguin, I dont know if you've played against a few those guys, but who's the most skilled guy you've played against in this league so far?
Sean: Most skilled, I'd probably have to say Joey Hishon on Owen Sound last year, he's really offensive and creative and you just never know what to expect when he has the puck.

PuckCentral: What aspect of your game do you take the most pride in?
Sean: I think D-Zone coverage, just coming from the D-Zone out, it makes you a much better hockey player.

PuckCentral: A little bit about you for the people reading, what was your favorite team growing up?
Sean: The Leafs.

PuckCentral: Who was your favorite player?
Sean: Steve Yzerman.

PuckCentral: We ask everyone this question, Who do you try to model your game after the most?
Sean: Jonathan Toews and Joe Thornton.

After those questions I asked Sean if he'd take part in a "Puck Central Quiz", which consists of random questions about hockey,personal preferences, and I even called in a little favor.

Q&A with Mark Scheifele of the Barrie Colts/Winnipeg Jets

@PuckCentralHQ: I guess ill start with how do you think your season is going, personally?

@markscheifele55: I think it is going pretty good, our team has been succeeding and that's my main focus I wanted to do whatever it takes to help the team so that's how I gauge my success.

PC: You started the year with the Winnipeg Jets, what was it like being a part of that franchises first 7 games?

MS: It was a great feeling being a part of something so passionate and exciting,it was one of the best feelings I've ever felt.

PC: It must have been really special,although you got sent down soon after what was it like scoring your first goal?Especially against the Leafs,what was running through your mind when you saw it go in?

MS: It was an amazing feeling I really wanted to score a goal and help the team so just to score made it very special but to do it so close to home made it that much better,being able to do it in front of family and friends. And I was just thinking to myslef is this really happening it was always a dream of mine and for it to actually happen made it so special.

PC: It was definitely something special to watch. You were somewhat of an "off the board" pick at 7th, were you surprised at all that the Jets took you at 7 or did you have a pretty good idea they were going to select you?

MS: I was pretty surprised, I had a feeling they had interest in me but had no idea they were going to take me but I was just honoured to be drafted because it was a dream of mine since I was a little kid.

PC: You had a huge training camp and pre-season, which surprised a lot of people, did you do anything different in the summer training wise to prepare yourself?

MS: I did the same thing I did the summer before just with different exercises to help what I needed to do to improve my strength and just continued to work my hardest every day to reach my goal of playing in the NHL and will continue to work my hardest.

PC: Well the hard work is definitely showing. What has it meant to you to have arguably the greatest Winnipeg Jet,Dale Hawerchuck as your coach? And what did he say to you about being drafted to Winnipeg?

MS: It is unbelievable having such a legend as a coach and having someone so knowledgeable about the game teach me new things about my game and he told me how great of an organization it is and how it is such a passionate place and a great city to play in.

PC: I know it maybe didn't go as planned for the team and maybe you personally but what was it like playing for Canada at the WJC?

MS: It was a great experience even though we didn't achieve our goal of winning the gold medal it taught me a lot about handling pressure and taught me about my hockey game to help me develop as a player and also it was a fun experience being with such a great group of guys.

PC: You had your Barrie teammate Tanner Pearson there with you, did it help you guys at all having each other there?

MS: Ya I think it helped a little bit having the chemistry there and knowing one guy very well but by the end of the tournament everyone was best friends which is why it made it such a good experience.

PC: On the note of teammates, what's it like having Aaron Ekblad on the team, there was a lot of hype surrounding him, what kind of an impact has he had on the team and in the dressing room?

MS: Well he is a great player and he is a great guy in the room he's a key player on our team and its only been positive he helps our team out a lot and will be a great player in the future.

PC: You guys have already clinched a playoff spot, how hard is it to try and stay focused on the season and not start thinking ahead to the playoffs?

MS: I don't think its that's hard to stay focused we still want to continue to build our team chemistry and also try to climb the standings as much as we can.

PC: We ask this to everyone, Who do you try to model your game after? Or do you just try and play like "Mark Scheifele"?

MS: I try to model my game after 2 players, Pavel Datsyuk I try to model myself after his 2 way play and his creativity with the puck and also Joe Thornton, I try to bring a big playmaking centremen but then I also try to play unique style as well.

PC: With all that said,which aspect of your game do you take the most pride in?

MS: I take most pride in just playing an all round game I don't want to just be offensive or just defensive I want to help on both sides of the puck.

PC: Okay and I have two more small questions that I probably should have asked earlier haha. Which player helped you the most during your time in Winnipeg?

MS: Probably either Bogosian or Ladd I roomed with Ladd on the road and he helped me a lot of things after games to help me with my game and Bogosian was probably my best friend when I was there we talked a lot and he helped me a lot with my game and how to conduct myself.

PC: Seems like you had two great players helping you out!. Last question now, besides your first goal and that first Jets home game what was your "welcome to the NHL" moment?

MS: Other then those 2 things it was probably travelling on a plane instead of a bus it just feels so professional and it gave me the welcome to the NHL moment.

PC: Alright well that's pretty much all I have.So thanks again for doing this, it means a lot. Best of luck to you and the team in the playoffs!

The Saga of Alexander Radulov

      In July of 2008 Alex Radulov turned his back on the Nashville Predators, and the National Hockey League. The elite scoring, Russian Winger left for the newly formed KHL in his home country of Russia, however he was still under contract with the Preds. For obvious reasons this caused a fairly big uproar in Nashville and the IIHF, but ultimately there was nothing they could do and Radulov left, but here we are nearly 4 years later looking at a possible much anticipated return for Radulov.

     Radulov has now confirmed that he would like to return to the Nashville Predators THIS season, which would burn off the final year of his Entry-Level contract, and make him an RFA in the summer. So I guess in a perfect world this whole situation would finally be resolved and Radulov would finally be a Predator again, he would help this underdog team to a Stanley Cup,and they'd live happily ever after but unfortunately for Nashville and Radulov,Salavat Yulaev (Radulovs KHL team) isn't big on fairytale endings. It's not that Salavat Yulaev is trying to stick it to Radulov, or the NHL, they just don't want to lose their rights to the KHL's alltime leading scorer, and as hard as it is to admit, that's fair. The only way Radulov can leave and S.Y. can retain his rights is if Alex leaves for the NHL in the fall, which isn't ideal for anyone. Another option would be if Radulov paid off 2/3's of his contract, but that's not likely to happen due to the millions of dollars it would cost him. Of course there's always the illegal option, which Radulov is oh so famous for, bolting, but I believe Radulov's agent has already shot down any chances of that happening, which in a way is a sign of relief, showing that Radulov has matured as a person and is ready to handle things the proper way.

     Alex Radulov, and the KHL are set to sit down at some point and discuss the whole situation. I think it'll be interesting to see how the KHL handles this situation. They obviously want what's best for their teams, and players, but they appear to want some kind of a relationship with the NHL, so they could make some kind of an ''exception'' and allow Radulov to leave early, and Salavat Yulaev keep his rights. If the KHL truly wants a good relationship with the NHL this would be a good way to start mending their relationship.

     The NHL,and NHLPA have already worked out an agreement which would allow Radulov to return to the NHL without having to clear waivers. This would be huge for a Nashville team that doesn't have any elite scoring talents, so if the KHL can somehow figure this out and let Radulov return, I think the Preds could become a serious contender for the Cup this season, however I will save this for my next segment of "The Saga of Alexander Radulov".

Jaden Schwartz (Part 1)

      In 2010 the St.louis Blues took somewhat of an "Off the Board" pick when selecting Jaden Schwartz 14th overall. Most had this undersized, but highly-skilled forward going late in the first round, but I think in a few years we'll all be saying this was a steal for the Blues.

      Before I go any further with this story I'd like to talk about what special qualities Schwartz brings to the Blues besides his "skill" and high hockey IQ. Jaden Schwartz brings leadership, heart, courage, and unbelievable strength. As I’m sure many of you know Jadens sister, Mandi, died in April of 2011. Mandi was diagnosed with leukemia in December of 2008, and received a bone marrow transplant in September of 08. Unfortunately in December of the same year her cancer returned. During this time Jaden was going through the World Junior Championships, to make things harder on Schwartz, during the second game of the tournament he broke his ankle, ending his tournament. But before he was willing to call it quits in that second game, he scored a goal on his broken ankle. If that's not heart and desire, I'm not sure what is. Everything that Schwartz has been through has given him leadership and maturity beyond his years, which is why he was selected as Team Canada's Captain at the World Junior Championships in Alberta this past Christmas Break.

      Besides his leadership, and maturity, Jaden Schwartz will bring a highly skilled two-way game to the league leading St.louis Blues. Schwartz, 5-10, 182lbs, isn't very big but he has a hard work ethic and the drive to make up for any lack of ''size''. This drive gives him the ability to win battles for the puck along the boards, and in the corners. His skating isn't great but he's able to keep up without any trouble, and his skating doesn't suffer any with the puck either which is nice. Jaden Schwartz has a tremendous amount of offensive ability, which should excite Blues fans. It should take a few years for Schwartz to completely find his offensive game, but the Blues have enough offensive tools that he should be able to develop into that role without being rushed. On top of his great offensive potential, he also posses a great deal of defensive potential that could allow him to play a bottom six role with the Blues, at least until he can work his way up to the top six.

      If Schwartz stays with the big club for the rest of the season, and in the playoffs he'll be able to provide some depth to the team, which is going to be necessary is the Blues want to makes a big playoff push, which I'm sure they do considering they're sitting at the top of the standings. He's capable of scoring some goals both on the Power-Play and 5on5, he can also kill penalties if needed.

Niagara IceDogs VS Ottawa 67's (Game Preview)

Tonight I will be in attendence of the Niagara-Ottawa game, in Ottawa. This game will surely be a great test for both teams, as they will likely meet up at some point in the late rounds of the playoffs. Both teams sit 1-2 in the Eastern Conference, with only one point seperating the two teams. Both teams have 5 games remaining, so a win tonight for either team could make or break their chances at winning the conference.

The game tonight is likely to be a classic "shootout" as both teams have many offensive weapons. Including Islanders '11 top draft pick Ryan Strome,Bostons '11 to pick Dougie Hamilton, and the league's point leader Tyler Toffoli. The game tonight will showcase four of THN's top 59 prospects, and many more top prospects. What I find most exciting about this game is it will include five, yes five of the leagues top 15 scorers (1-Toffoli,5-Prince,7-Agozzino,9-F.Hamilton,15-Monahan). I cranked the numbers, and those five forwards make up 30% of the ''top 15's'' point totals!.

With all the high scoring potential this game has, I wouldn't be surprised to see the goalies take over this game. Niagara will likely start the leagues top goaltender, Mark Visentin. Visentin is the league leader in G.A.A(2.05)and Shutouts (10) which is a new single season record in the OHL, he's tied for 3rd in Save%(.923), and 4th in Wins(28). Petr Mrazek is likely to get the nod in net tonight. Mrazek, like Visentin,also sits high in goaltending statistics. He's 7th in G.A.A (2.78),8th in Save% (.918),2nd in Wins (29),tied for 6th in Shutouts(3),and sits 5th in the whole league with total Saves this season(1494). Either one of these goalies could win the game for their team, both have played well in the World Junior Championships, so I don't expect the pressure of this game to get to either of them.

This will be the third meeting of these two teams this season. Both teams have one win and one loss against one another. The first meeting came October.20th where Niagara beat the 67's 4-1. The second meeting came November.20th, the 67's got their revenge stomping on the IceDogs 5-2. These stats show proof that fans can expect a high pace, even game tonight.

Q&A With Scott Wedgewood!

Puck Insiders: So I guess ill start by asking you how you feel your season is coming along? The team is obvious doing well&you're a big reason for that.
@ScottWedgewood:Well for us before the season started we knew we were going to have a strong team. I think for the most part we have lived up to that expectation. In 2nd seat now, with the adversity at times. For me personally this season has been definitely the one I have learned the most in, being a 4th year guy andk nowing what to expect and how to handle this and keeping a good work ethic and attitude through otu the year.

PI: You sort of entered the WJC as an underdog by some do you feel your extremely strong camp and taking the number 2 job has helped you develpo as a goalie?
SW: Yeah of course, I mean all 4 goalies were given the chance to make the team Visentin being a returning guy was favoured to be selected, and for me I just tried to show my ability to stop the puck and be able to play under pressure. Doing well at the camp helped with confidence moving forward into the tournament but i think the tournament in itself helped me a lot more in developing just through the experience you learn thing and how to better understand your mindset in big situations and the oppurtunity you are given.

P.I: So obviously that loss to the Russians was a heartbreaker especially since it was mainly due to bad luck rather then a poor performance. Do you think that loss has not just made you a stronger goalie, but also a stronger person?
S.W: Yeah it was definitely a heart break not just for the players but for our country. The puck definitely wasn't on our side during the first two periods with the bounces we were getting and unfortunate plays. Leaving the game at the time I did was not what I wanted to do, not being able to help the team come back, but they almost did the impossible and made it close. The learnign experience I took away from that game has definitely changed the way I look at any game I play in now, because your never to far behind to come back. Also that when the bounces are against you ,just means you have to work that much harder to make them go your way and give the team a chance to win. Also helped with the maturity and how to handle myself in that situation, you can't explain how it feels or even what to expect until you have experienced that situation and going through it will know what is expected and how to prepare for it if I am ever in that sitiuation again.

PI: Well I certainly felt for you that game, it was tough to watch. Your junior career is coming to an end, and you may still be a few years away from the NHL but with Martin Brodeur's career coming to an end and you being one of if not the best NJ goalie prospect do you feel any added pressure to get there sooner?
SW:I haven't really put things into perspective yet on that situation. For a goalie to come out of junior and make an impact in the NHL is not to common, would be great to do but in reality, going to take things a day at a time and develop no need to rush things. Brodeur has accomplished almost everything a goalie could dream of doing while in NJ and to be projected to replace him is an honour in itself. Will see what happens when the time comes but no going right now. Main focus is here with Plymouth and winning a Championship.
PI:Fair enough. Sorry to go back to the WJC, I missed a question has your life changed a lot since then? Like do you get noticed in public more?
SW:Since the tournament I have a lot more twitter followers haha, but not really things are back to normal, i've soent most time in the states, fans here congradulate me and things like that,sign more autographs for fans in different arenas throughout the league, but for the most part just back to the ways things were before.

PI: Alright, so back to the other questions now. You're very good at playing the puck, is that something you work on, or does it just come naturally?
SW:playing the puck kind of transferred over when I switched from player to goalie when I was 11. Still play player in the summertime and what not but was a defensemen back in the day, so knowing what to do behind the net I've learned from experience and love to get my stick in the play whenever I can to make it easier to break out for our team.

PI: Oh wow, didn't know you played player until you were 11. What made you make the switch then? And did you ever expect to be where you are now when you made the change?
SW: I had always been goalie in road hockey due to two older brothers, and just played one summer in a 3on3 league and fell in love with the position. I always wanted to know where I would be if I had stayed player, but I am very happy with where I've gotten and think I made the right choice.

PI: Yeah, I used to play goalie as well and thought the same thing haha obviously it turned out better for you! So I'll try and wrap things up here. So obviously Plymouth has clinched a playoff spot already. Is it hard to keep focus knowing you're already there?
SW:I think the biggest challenge when clinching a playoff spot is knowing that every team your going to face is going to bring out their best performance because most likely they are battling for home ice or a playoff position. So for us right now is taking the challenge and competing just as hard so we get into playoff mode and are ready to take on the challenge we will get in the first round.

PI:Alright and last question. I asked Galchenyuk this too. Is there anyone you try to model your game after? or do you just try and be "Scott Wedgewood"?
SW:While growing up Brodeur was my idol. I always thoguht I played like him, but more just like to be able to stop the puck anyway I can. Any goalie in the NHL i'd compare myself to right now would be probably Kiprusoff or Quick. But my mentality and composer in the net I learned from Brodeur growing up.

PI:One last quick question. Have you had the chance to talk to Brodeur at all since being drafted by NJ?
SW:I skated with him this past camp when we both were recovering from injuries, Definitely have a lot to learn from him and hopefully get the opportunity to do so.

Alex Galchenyuk, possibly the most underrated prospect in this year’s up-coming NHL Entry Draft and not because people don’t know who he is or because he plays in an obscure league or market. But because he hasn’t played a single game since he had a serious knee injury that has kept him out of action all year. Galchenyuk was the 1^st overall pick of Sarnia in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection Draft after putting together an outstanding season with Chicago Young Americans of the MWEHL (44 goals,43 assists in 38 games played). He had the hockey world wondering what he could do in the OHL in his rookie season, possibly the hardest junior league to play in and he didn’t disappoint them. Finishing the year with 31 goals and 83 points good enough for 3^rd in the entire CHL in rookie scoring, finishing behind only Nail Yakupov (101 points) and Sven Bartschi (85 points) both of which hold an age advantage. Galchenyuk plays much like a typical North American in the sense that he plays a very strong puck protection game. However this isn’t your typical North American, the American born Russian also has the ability to tantalize opponents with his wizard like stick handling skills and ability to be creative in a one on one situation.

After a summer in which he represented Team USA at the 2011 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, and left many people wanting more after what most would call a “disappointing performance” after finishing with only 3 goals and 4 points in 4 games. Alex was ready to show the critics and NHL General Managers that, the tournament was an abnormality and not the trend to expect. With expectations high on not only himself but from everyone around him, Alex was set to deliver until his season abruptly came to a premature end when he suffered a serious knee injury before playing a regular season game.

Even though he hasn’t played a single game yet this year scouts still like his ability thread the puck through tight areas, his quick release, his top speed and agility is good although he doesn’t possess the quickest feet, his vision, hockey sense and how well he sees the ice. Alex has a good size body and a strong stick which makes it hard to knock him off the puck, and is a machine in the offensive zone which leads to him creating space for his line mates. Galchenyuk projects to be a playmaker first and foremost but he also owns an accurate and lightning quick shot that will certainly keep his opponents honest.

Scouts will certainly be watching closely as Galchenyuk gears up to return to action, since many have a sense that his injury could potentially delay this young kids development. With a strong showing he could end this speculation and show the scouts and many others why he was ranked as a top 3 prospect and potential #1 prospect coming into this season. Galchenyuk has many question marks surrounding him but I wouldn’t expect it to affect him come draft day. Whichever team drafts him should be thankful because had he not have suffered this injury he might not of ended up with that franchise.

P.I.: So I guess ill start by asking about how your feeling since the surgery? Is everything coming along as planned?
AG: I feel good

PI: Great to hear. Do you think you'll be ready for the playoffs? I know you're not in a position to give out a lot of info, but do you think you're close to a return?
AG: I'm going day by day no date. Maybe couple games b4 playoffs or playoffs

PI: You must be anxious to return then? Do you think your injury will hurt your draft stock at all or do you think you can still be a high pick?
AG: Yea I can't wait. I think I can go out and play the way I can it won't hurt at all

PI: Despite the injury you're still ranked in the top 10 in many scouts eyes, this must be exciting for you, do you think about the draft a lot?
AG: Yeah I think it's bc if u look in the NHL acl injury didn't hurt the players like malkin,datsyuk,hossa,franzen,kronwall and more.... No I don't really think about the draft I really think how to get back and better than I was. and it's only march so

PI: That's true, seems like you've done your home work on acl injuries. Have you had pro players reach out to you with words of encouragement?
AG: Cammalieri tweeted that, don't worry about the draft and everything

PI: That must have been nice. I know it's getting late so i'll try and sum this up aha. I know this is about you but I have to ask. What's it like playing with Nail Yakupov, he's obviously an elite talent, do you think you guys make each other better as players?
AG: Well some people think ohh it must be so nice to play w Nail haha but its not easy lol bc he likes to play with the puck, I like to play with the puck but I think we fio and had some chemistry and hopefully I comeback and we will have that chemy that we had last year or better

PI: I think if the chemistry got even better Sarnia would be unstoppable lol just two more questions if you don't mind! Who do you try to model your game after? or do you just try and be ''Alex Galchenyuk"?
AG: Just Alex Galchenyuk no copying anyone

PI: I thought that might be your answer haha So last one here. You were born in America but you're obviously very much Russian, so which country will you be representing in the future? and briefly, why?
AG: USA I think bc I was born in the states and I mean I just like it more
