Asif apologises for his mistakes

Mohammad Asif, the Pakistan fast bowler, has apologized to his nation, for all the mistakes he has done in the past. Asif was in tears during an interview with Geo TV.

Asif, has been surrounded by controversies since past 15 months. Few days before South Africa Twenty-Twenty world cup he was involved in a brawl with Shoaib Akhtar, when Shoaib hit him with a cricket bat. Then after few months he was caught at Dubai Airport, where he was found guilty for possession of opium. In July, IPL found out Asif tested positive for nandrolone. He appealed for sample B, in which he was found guilty again.

Now Asif woes to be a changed man, if given a chance by Pakistan Cricket Board.

England to come back for Tests in India

England's Cricket Team will be back in India for 2 Tests starting from December 11th. I think a break from cricket for few days and a week spent with their families, English players have been able to clear their mind and will fly to India via Abu Dhabi to play 2 Tests. England have been assured for the beefed up security measures, and we wish everything goes fine.

What do you think result is going to be? Do you think India will dominate England like ODI's or will England be able to fight back and dictate terms to India?

A lot changed in world of Cricket

It's been really a tough last week for everyone whether you are Canadian, American, Australian, Pakistani and definitely it was very hard for people of India. The recent attacks on Mumbai.

These attacks have not only affected our day to day life but has not spared cricket also. A lot has changed in world of Cricket, with the recent attacks on Mumbai. Finally everything is over and has started coming back to normal, but Indian Cricket doesn't seems to do so. Recent tour of England vs India has been reduced to 5 match ODIs from 7 matches. And England team had decided to leave India. Nobody knows that will they be able to come back for the test series starting December 16th, 2008. IPL tour has also been delayed from December to January but final dates have not been decided.

I'm sorry for not posting for few days, coz i didn't felt like. I was so disgusted and broke with these attacks, I didn't wanted to come and write something. Lets hope everything is back to normal and cricket resumes to it's planned schedule.

Will England be able to fight back?

India v/s England 5th ODI

It's 5th ODI of the seven match series between India and England. England already have lost 4 One Days and already have lost the series. Will England be able to fight back in the fifth ODI, which will be played on 26th Nov 2008, at Cuttack?

England now have nothing to loose and I believe they should not take any undue pressure on them and try to beat India and break the jinx. English are already trying very hard to win match in India and I think this is the best opportunity for them to win as India already has won the series and will try to experiment with their team and so will not be at their full strength. So, England might have opportunity to fight back. Of the last 3 One Day International matches played by England, at Barabati Stadium, England have won all the 3 ODI's. So, we never know this might be it.

India on other hand, youngsters who will be coming back in team will try to prove their capabilities and will give away nothing to England. Hence, will fight for the clean sweep against England.

Well all I know is that, this is going to be an exciting match and I really am looking forward for it.

40 overs India 198 for 5 (Sehwag 68, Flintoff 3-31) beat England 240 (Bopara 60, Bell 46, Harbhajan 3-31) by 16 runs (D/L method)

Scorecard

India won the 3rd ODI from England by 16 runs by D/L method. But the match was evenly poised where in the end India pulled off, thanks to some good hitts by Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag.

But the most interesting thing was Yuvraj Singh getting out to Andrew Flintoff caught in the deep square leg position by Stuart Broad. There is some contest going on between Flintoff and Yuvraj since last T20 World Cup. You cannot forget the match where Yuvraj hit Six Sixes in an over, where he was provoked by Flintoff and Stuart Broad became victim of Flintoff's provocation.

Andrew Flintoff played some mind tricks in the 3rd ODI with Yuvraj, for which he became victim of and played a nothing shot to get out at score of 38 and stunned the crowd at Kanpur. Flintoff did his trade mark walking taking back steps and looking at Yuvraj which was enough to upset him and he threw his wicket. On taking Yuvraj's catch on deep square leg, Stuart Broad, celebrated like a baby who had been crying and had been given a balloon after a lot of cry.

This contest is getting interesting day by day will wait for next match which is going to be played at Banglore on 23rd November 2008. This series is going to continue for a while and this contest is going to be a fun to watch.

Waiting eagerly for India v/s England 3rd ODI

Hey All,

I am eagerly waiting for 3rd ODI between India and England to start. I believe it is going to be a thriller. India already is in lead with 2-0 in the seven match series. Will India be able to clinch the 3rd ODI and put England under immense pressure to win all the remaining 4 matches? Or is it going to be England who is going to fight back to India and let India do some maths.

I belive the match is going to be even more exciting as there are news that Ishant Sharma is declared fit for the 3rd ODI and on other hand Graeme Swann might replace Sidebottom. Don't forget it's same Swann who helped England win against Sri Lanka, last year. Boy, it's going to be some show, while Yuvraj Singh on blast.

Big Picture

Both teams have barely had a chance to catch their breath in the lead-up to the opening match of this ODI series. England have been traversing the globe in search of riches only to come away empty-handed, while India have been taking on the best team in the world and have come away with the spoils. There is no doubt where the momentum lies at the start of this contest, especially after England folded for 98 against a Mumbai XI that was no more than a 2nd XI side.

Making the early running in a series condensed to 19 days will be vital. As England found in 2006 when they lost 5-1 it's very difficult to turn around a poor start. Despite their dodgy preparation, Rajkot may just offer them a chance. India will still be on a high after beating Australia, but the Test series was played at a very different pace to the cricket that can be expected over the next few weeks. The home side have brought in a few new faces and those who remain from the Tests will have to quickly adjust their mindsets to 50-over cricket. Amazingly, given the dominance of the one-day game in India, it will be their first home ODI since last November.

Although it seems a long time ago now, England's recent 50-over form is outstanding after they thrashed South Africa 4-0 at home. The return of Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison has been vital, but England will need their entire side firing if they are to overcome India on their own turf.

Watch out for

Andrew Flintoff He is eager to make up for lost time after finally overcoming his ankle problems and his impact on the England side was clear when he returned against South Africa in the summer. A century in the opening warm-up match last week - his first in any cricket since the 2005 Ashes - was a promising sign as his position at No. 5 is crucial to the one-day team. His bowling has always been a banker, and the ability to find bounce and reverse swing on docile surfaces is a vital weapon in England's attack.

James Anderson The new ball doesn't swing for very long in India, so it's important to make the most of it. Anderson has developed into a consistent performer in all forms, marrying sharp, late swing with decent pace. He has played England's last 40 ODIs and is finally taking on the mantle as the attack leader. Also one of the team's best outfielders with a bullet arm.

Yuvraj Singh Currently out of the Test line-up, but a senior figure in the limited-overs team. His recent form has been patchy and the selectors' patience is once tunning a little thin. However, England know how dangerous he can be and Stuart Broad is still waiting for some of those six sixes he was hit for at the World Twenty20 to land. He remains one of the best fielders in India.

Harbhajan Singh One of the most combative players around, Harbhajan will relish his battle with England's middle order. It will be a vital contest. The visitors have regularly struggled against quality spin in one-day cricket and they won't be able to afford to drift during Harbhajan's 10 overs.

Team news

Ishant Sharma has been rested after picking up a niggle against Australia, so his absence opens the door for Munaf Patel. The batting line-up gives a glimpse into India's future, with one of the middle-order trio set to replace Sourav Ganguly in the Test side. India will wait until the morning to confirm their XI, and the final decision revolves around the No. 7 spot.

They have opted to play just the one frontline spinner in Samit Patel, so Graeme Swann is again on the sidelines, while Ravi Bopara has been recalled in place of Luke Wright. Much attention will be focused on the opening partnership between Ian Bell and Matt Prior because the subcontinent is one place where the Powerplay overs must he taken advantage of.

Pitch & conditions

The pitch is soft and unlikely to break-up with curator Dhiraj Parsana saying it should offer something for everyone, with the quick bowlers looking to take advantage of the early start. "We have left some grass on it and there would be some sweating under the covers before the 9am start," he said. "It would be good for the stroke-makers too as more shots can be played on the back foot rather than when they are forced to play on the front foot on wickets that afford only knee-high bounce."

Ishaant Sharma to miss 1st ODI at Rajkot

Ishant Sharma, has been advised rest for atleast 5 days due to ankle sprain. He is going to miss 1st ODI with England at Rajkot on 14th November.

He was declared Man of the Series for the series played with Australia, which ended last week. His injury aggravated due longer spells in the 4th and last test match played against Australia in Nagpur, which India won by 172 runs to grab the series 2-0. Ishant bowled 35 overs in last test and took 4 wickets.

R.P. Singh or Munaaf Patel are the other two options left with skipper Mahendera Singh Dhoni for the opener against England.

First ODI is scheduled to begin on 14th November at Rajkot.

Big Picture

Offshore series - especially bilateral - in neutral venues have traditionally not been taken all that seriously. It may not be so in the case of three one-day internationals between Pakistan and West Indies in Abu Dhabi's swanky Sheikh Zayed Stadium. A cricket-starved Pakistan have had their share of political, financial and player-related woes and Shoaib Malik's side are in Abu Dhabi with a brand new coach and management team, hoping for an upturn in cricketing fortunes.

Pakistan have played only five ODIs against strong opposition in 2008 - four against India and one against Sri Lanka. Australia, South Africa and New Zealand refused to tour because of security concerns at various times over the year, leaving Zimbabwe and Bangladesh to pop over for five ODIs each. Pakistan duly whitewashed both, though disappointed during the Asia Cup with sterner opposition. When the Champions Trophy was shelved later in the year, and then when West Indies refused to tour, Pakistan had no option but to accede to Abu Dhabi as a venue.

In the midst of these worries came personnel fiascoes. Mohammad Asif was banned earlier for testing positive again for the banned substance nandrolone during the IPL; Shoaib Akhtar has been involved in legal battles with the Pakistan Cricket Board; Mohammad Yousuf defected to the unofficial ICL; Geoff Lawson was sacked as coach and to top it off, there have been persistent reports of unease between senior players and Malik.

For West Indies, the high of winning the lucrative Stanford 20/20 for 20 match against England would hopefully have come off for most in the squad. Their coach, John Dyson, thought the six-week camp ahead of the Twenty20 match "was an overkill" and the lack of preparations for the team as a whole unit might hurt them in Abu Dhabi.

Winning the Scotiabank tri-series in their previous one-day assignment, against Canada and Bermuda, might not have undone the humiliation at home in the ODI series against Australia where they were thrashed 0-5. West Indies will look at the ICC Cricketer of the Year, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and in-form Chris Gayle to lead from the front.

Watch out for

Shoaib Akhtar has approached full match fitness and the management was impressed by his performances in the Pentangular Cup. David Dwyer, the team trainer, has also worked closely with Shoaib, who has played little cricket this year. And unlike a couple of other coaches, Intikhab Alam has no plans to ask him to reduce his run-up.

Xavier Marshall caught the eye during the home series against Australia earlier this year, and then blasted the most sixes in an ODI against Canada in August. Marshall's 12 sixes broke a 12-year-old record of 11 in an innings, set in 1996 by Sanath Jayasuriya and equalled six months later by Shahid Afridi. Opening the innings with Gayle, Marshall has the ability to really tee off.

Umar Gul has fully recovered from the rib injury he picked up at the Asia Cup in July, taking 6-39 in his only Pentangular Cup this season. With Asif nowhere near the scene, Gul will shoulder plenty of the fast-bowling responsibility.

Team news

Pakistan have to decide between two specialist openers or a makeshift pair. Intikhab wants specialists but Malik prefers Kamran Akmal, who has opened in 38 ODIs and scored all of his four centuries from there, to make room for another bowling option. The bowing pretty much picks itself, with Shoaib being paired with Sohail Tanvir, followed by Umar Gul and Rao Iftikhar Anjum. Pakistan have plenty of spin options, but Shahid Afridi and Fawad Alam will get first dibs ahead of 31-year-old offspinner Saeed Ajmal.

West Indies will, as always, rely on an explosive top order to kickstart the innings. Gayle warmed up the series with smashing half-century in the Stanford final against England, while Marshall and Ramnaresh Sarwan are quick scorers. The middle order, bar Chanderpaul, is thin. Shawn Findlay and Brendan Nash have played seven ODIs between them, while Carlton Baugh was only recently reinstated to the ODI side for the tri-series in Canada. West Indies will have to decide between adding a third pace bowler or including Dave Mohammed as spinning partner to slow left-armer Nikita Miller, the leading wicket-taker during the first-class season with 42 victims . Kemar Roach, a young right-arm fast bowler, may get the nod.

The Sheikh Zayed Stadium has the reputation for being a batsman's ground, with the average runs per wicket being 29.18, scored at 5.04 an over. However, seamers and spinners have also found some extra help when the floodlights come on. It is warm in the day time, so most sides prefer having a bat.

Yousuf sacked from PCB, joins ICL

Mohammad Yousuf, the Pakistan batsman, has formally signed up for the ICL, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his move. The announcement brought a swift response from the Pakistan Cricket Board, which banned him from "any type of cricket" in Pakistan and terminated his central contract.

"I have decided to sign for ICL," Yousuf - who will play for Lahore Badshahs - said in New Delhi. "There was a misunderstanding with the ICL. I was misguided and confused and not able to take a decision earlier."

He also expressed a wish to continue representing the Pakistan national team. "See, I want to continue playing for Pakistan and the ICL authorities also have no problem with that," he said. He was included in a 15-man squad to take on West Indies in three ODIs later this month, and the PCB will name a replacement, most likely to be Karachi batsman Khalid Latif.

However, the PCB's decision will have put paid to that. "Yousuf will remain banned from playing any type of cricket in Pakistan as he has joined the unrecognised Indian Cricket League, His central contract has also been cancelled."

Yousuf had initially signed up with the league in September 2007, in protest at being axed from Pakistan's squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa.

He was later lured out of playing in the ICL by the Pakistan board, with the promise of a lucrative contract in the IPL. But the ICL took the matter to an arbitration court in Mumbai, arguing that as Yousuf had signed up with them, he was ineligible to play for any other league.

A stay order was passed against Yousuf's participation in the IPL, though an appeal was later filed by the PCB on Yousuf's behalf in the Bombay High Court.

ICL officials said their legal wrangle with Yousuf has been sorted out and they will file a joint statement in court. "We have resolved matters mutually," Himanshu Mody, ICL's business head, said.

That isn't necessarily the end of Yousuf's legal headaches. The Pakistan board, said Zakir, is looking into recouping "the legal costs we incurred in fighting Yousuf's case earlier." IPL officials, meanwhile, said they will look at legal options against Yousuf's latest move because they had already paid a significant sum of money as advance to Yousuf. But Mody said that Yousuf's association with the IPL would not be an issue because "there is no contract and no payment made".
