The Mythical Social Security Crisis of 2011

That’s right. The sky is not falling. It’s not, as retiring rockers R.E.M. would put it, “the end of the world as we know it.” You might, of course, think otherwise if you’ve been watching the recent debates among Republicans who want to replace Barack Obama as president. Texas Gov. Rick Perry calls the system a Ponzi scheme. Rep. Ron Paul, another Texas Republican, says the program is “on its last legs.” And former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney suggests that the system faces “looming bankruptcy.”

But here’s the reality: The social Security Trust Fund’s surplus will continue to grow for more than a decade, until 2022. After that, the surplus will, indeed, start shrinking as more and more baby boomers retire and start collecting checks rather than paying in. But it will take until 2035 or so before the surplus is gone.

Even then, the fund will be far from broke. According to the government’s own auditors, there will be enough cash to pay 75% of the program’s benefits for another half a century, until 2085.

So why all the “woe is us” warnings if the end isn’t near? Politics, of course. A flood of younger voters helped sweep Obama past Arizona Sen. John McCain in the 2008 presidential race. But they might not be so eager to vote the same way next year if they’re convinced by Perry and company that Social Security is falling apart and there’s no chance they’ll get anything back from the system after paying into it throughout their careers. And seniors can be rattled by the mere suggestion that their checks will bounce.

Every generation goes through this period of doubt. Way back in the early 1980s, shortly after I joined the workforce and pondered who FICA was and what he was doing with all the money he took from my weekly check, Social Security was deemed by some to be dying. It didn’t die, of course.Congress and President Reagan made some changes and the checks kept arriving in the mail.

In 1996 there was another round of dire warnings, leading Mother Jones magazine to proclaim: “By 1999, Social Security as we know it may no longer exist.” Again, Congress and the president — this time Bill Clinton — stepped up and made changes to bolster the program.

And, at some point, that will happen again. Congress and the president — Obama in a second term or a Republican who defeats him, or someone a little further down the road — will make more changes to keep the system healthy. No Congress will allow Social Security to reach the point where benefit checks will be 25% smaller. Because folks collecting Social Security aren’t just check recipients. They’re voters, and enraged voters don’t give incumbent lawmakers much hope for job security.

Put another way, there is zero chance of Congress doing nothing to the Social Security system over the next 50 years. Zero. In fact, since 1937, Congress has mandated more than 60 changes to the program, altering the payroll tax rate 20 times and boosting the maximum wage subjected to the tax more than 40 times.

Poverty has increased in India

The current debate over poverty, if Rs.32 a day is enough for a person, is misdirected and the government should answer why the numbers of poor in the country are on the rise, says National Advisory Council member N.C. Saxena.

“The government’s estimate for poverty in 1972-73 was benchmarked at Rs.1.50 per day. It translates into Rs.32 per day today. There is nothing new with this estimate,” said the retired bureaucrat, known for speaking his mind, even in front of prime ministers.

“The government should instead be concerned that poverty has increased in India. The number of people below poverty line has gone up from 32 crore (320 million) in 1947 to 40 crore (400 mn) now,” Saxena, whose council is chaired by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, told IANS.

He said there were serious anomalies in the public distribution system — under which the poor who hold what is called “below poverty line cards” are entitled to subsidised grain. “This needs to be addressed.”

His comments follow an uproar after the Planning Commission told the Supreme Court last week that a person spending over Rs.965 per month in urban India and Rs.781 in rural areas cannot be deemed as poor and should be denied access to welfare schemes.

Saxena — who has published many critical papers on poverty and tribal welfare — said 60 percent of the people with cards for getting state doles were actually above poverty line and 20 percent of the genuine poor in the country did not have such a card.

“Many tribals and people living on the margins were left out in the last poverty survey. They are not getting the benefit of the public distribution system and other such social security schemes. The government should look into this,” he said.

“Vietnam, Myanmar and Bhutan have reduced poverty. But we have failed to do so despite much effort,” he said, adding as much as Rs.80,000 crore ($17.5 billion) is spent every year on various welfare schemes in India.

According to Saxena, who has also been a member-secretary of the Planning Commission, if the 2002 Census for ascertaining people below poverty had a 60 percent margin of error, the current round could have up to 80 percent error, as it is linked to caste.

“People are likely to furnish incorrect answers if they know the survey will determine their poverty status,” said Saxena, who had suggested a methodology to ascertain poverty numbers, followed by a letter now to Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh.

India currently has at least three estimates of poverty.

Economist Arjun Sengupta said 70 percent Indians were living on less than Rs.20 a day, and Saxena’s own report pegged it at over 50 percent of the population. A third study, by economist Suresh Tendulkar, pegged poverty in India at 37.5 percent.

Correct estimates are important to ensure welfare schemes reach the needy alone.

DIGITAL DIVIDE

Digital divide is a problem that seperatesor dividing some peoples from the world of new technology.digital divide is a common problem that happens so commonly to others.its the difference between the new generations and old generations.New generation can handle any type of electronic devices because they used to it and they are similar to this new technology.there are no new things to it.

But in the case of old generation like our grand parent.The technology is new to them.They are not familier to all these.They need others help to handle a digital device.These things are new to them and they also cant able to manage this very quickly.So this phenomenon divides the old generations from younger generations.An old man cant able to manage a computer or a TV if he is not familier with.If they are used to it to the operation it is okay for them to manage even in their old ages too.But everybody are not like this,so they are lagging behind the younger generation by this digital divide.

SCHOOL DROPOUTS

School Dropout is a problem for education and economic developement.Now a days the amount of droped out childrens are increasing a bit.it because of their pooe living conditions and other type of health problems.Droped out childrens are more from the villages and rural areas.They discontinues their school life.if they didnt have any good living conditions,Then they are willing to work for their family for their daily food.They works for daily wages and helps their family.Then they cant able to go to school.Wealth and Health are also the main problems for school Droped Out childrens.if this problem increases it will affect the education system as well as our economic developement.it will increases the illiteracy peoples and our society will lose well educated youth.it will cause our economy we didnt have to stand in front of other countries.
For solvingthis problem,we have to take valuable and necessary steps,The steps are:
1) Give awareness to the parents as well as students.
2) Give compulsory and free education for all the students till age 14.
3) Can help their family by giving a small job to the father or mother.
4) it is also helpful to sponser one children or more children for education till some age.

5) Help them to care any diseases if they have by giving free medicines.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND GENETIC FACTORS IN CANCER

The cause of the cancer cannot determined very easily.it varies from different conditions.The causative factors of cancer can include environmental changes and the replication of human DNA.Mutations causes a cancer then we can find whether it is environmental mutagens or arise as spontaneous errors during the replication of DNA.when people migrates to other countries.The environment also plays a mutual part in cancer.

Japan has the less type of cancers like Large Intestine,Breast and prostrate.But cancer of stomach is very less than United States.When They Migrates to United States.it should be much lesser than previous years.The Japaneses are only tend to marry within their group.its because of the environmental changes more than some genetic factors.it should be normal or less by one or two generations.The main cause for this are diet that should be the part of our cultural heritage rather than our pollution like environmental changes.The main cause of cancer in generations are due to the replication of DNA.its according to the Genes and some Hormone factors.Cancer also cause due to some Genetic problems in Humans

NEED FOR WATER CONSERVATION

Water is to be conserved for future generations because water is an essential element in this worl.All Human beings and Animals need water for their living.This Resourse is to be preserved otherwise human beings,Animals and plants will extinct from this world.

Water pollution is the main reason of this scarcity.All water resources like Lakes,Ponds,Wells,etc are polluted by the humans by different activities.humans uses ground water(water in the below surface of earth) for theor living now.it is because all other water resources are wasted and we cant depend upon them.it will cause some harmful diseases.The amount of water stored in underground resourse is decreasing.Now everyone utilizing underground water for plantations,factories by building borwells.

If this continues this resourse should be empty in coming years.All humans can live without food in three or four weeks,but noone can live without water more than three days.This specifies how much essential this to everyone.If the water doesnt exist,the earth will die.We need to look forward.we have to save all the resources available to our coming generations too.its our duty to preserve all resources for them.if we dont do so,they will suffer in the future.The water stored in undergroundis being storing from many million of years ago and we uses that resources.Many countries are suffering from Drought.The water is not available their.They used to buy one or two cans of water by giving huge amount of money, in other side many peoples wasting the pure drinking water.

Water resources is more than ever in this world.it is a basic need for every living beings in this world.We have to use as much we want without wasting and to preserve for everyone and also for the new generations.

Water conservation is an important thing.If we waste's water and if we use more than our need,its dangerous to our coming generations and earth.if all the water resources are empty,we didnt get pure water.it will cause another world tragedy.

ALCHOHOLISM AND DRUGS IN OUR YOUTHS

Youths are on the way of alchohols and drugs.Now the days the using of alchohols and drugs are increased large amount in youth.Childrens are also uses alchohols,cigaretts from their early age of 10.They are trying this just for a fun at the first time,their friends are also compiling them to use drugs.They uses very small amount at their first stages,then they are forced to increase the dose for better feelings.Then this will become their part of life.This causes their attitude,behaveness,personality,more of they became more hard minded,cruel and also pretends to do crime for money.They are destroying their own life in one manner.it will cause many problems to their lungs,hearts,throats,etc...it will cause many types of cancer diseases.if ones they are used and addicted to it,then it becames more hard to came back to a new life.
Opium,Mariguana,steroids,etc. are the types of drugs now youths use more.Drugs are more effective and dangerous than alchoholes.youths addicted more to alchoholes more than drugs,because drugs are not available at any time and also it costs more than alchoholes.different types of alchoholes are available and also some are cheap to buy.so students are more attracted to this and uses.they using more amounts of alchoholes and themselves destroying their life.Alchoholism and drugs use in students are more dangerous.We lose our healthy generations.The life period of them should be to low.if this happes continously,more chance to have heart attacks while in their younger life.
Society have the duty to take control to all these activities and give awareness to all.But none of our government or societies didnt took any type of precautions to avoid this.this society can do more than anyone.it helps them to change their lifestyle and activities according to the new culture of society if they implements to the society.the precautions that can be adopted by the society are:

POVERTY IN THE WORLD

Poverty is a main reason in all countries.Poverty is not completely eradicated by any of the countries.it is a main hurdle of democratic as well as all developing countries.it will also take time to remove or decrease the huge amount of poverty in all countries.some people wastes food while they eats and some others are begging for food for there living.its so pathetic,millions of people in this world are suffering without a food.They only need some food for only to keep their breath.we cant eradicate this problem so early,it needs time to solve all these poverty from all part of this world.Many people dies due to poverty.Many peoples are killed by others due to this.they are suffered more than a life time.We can solve this problem by using a single amount by using as much of food and resources that we want.

Humans stored a very large amount of grains,Nuts and other types of food for their lifetime or for future.if we taking the whole world,this food is enough to solve the hunger by all peoples who are suffered by poverty in one day.we use all the resources more than our needs.if we take as much as we want.it could be a favour that we doing to others by giving one or more people too.if we can able to preserve our foods and resources,we can able to avoid this problem in the coming decade.it is not a simple problem,we can take care of more than millions of people in this world,it is not a silly thing.we have to consider all peoples in this world.every human beings are same.every human beings have to get all the resources available in the earth.we have to share all these.Africa has the highest poverty rate.The poor people used to eat the waste of the food by others for their living.They collects the food from the waste bins and dumps.India has also a large amount of poverty rate while comparing to other countries.

we cant eradicate this problem fully,we only have to decrease the amount of the poor peoples.For this,we have to preserve food,resources and use as the amount of food that only we needed without wasting any type of food.humans cant live without food and water.If governments take appropriate steps to solve this problem.it will help a little bit.government can give a part of their food resources to poor people.if they take strict actions against the wastage of the food resources,it will help a bit to preserve some sort of resources.
