According to the EPA, adding insulation to your attic can greatly reduce your heating and cooling costs. Insulation is based on an R-Value rating system. The higher the R-Value the greater the thermal resistance and thus the better performance of the insulation. To keep your comfort levels equal all year around, adding in the right amount of insulation to your attic will give you back the savings you deserve for a more energy efficient home. How much insulation do we need here in the lower United States? Our Insulation experts recommend a level of R-38 for most attics.
Attic Insulation TentsWith one more tool to help you fight off the loss of your money through the cracks of your home, an Attic Tent covers up attic access doors to seal off unwanted leaks. This lightweight sealed cover encases the attic ladder and will reduce heat loss from the access opening. We have various sizes to fit all retractable ladders, kick doors and other attic access points.
Free Energy AuditsLower energy costs 30% to 40% on your cooling and heating costs. Setting out to be the hottest blog on the net from the coolest guy in the A/C business! Just kidding.I’m just one of the cool guys around, I think?
Well it’s a Freeze time! Yes even here in the South, Jacksonville Fl where I live is going below freezing! Global Warming not tonight or tomorrow!Looks like it may even be a Hard Freeze. This is a term to describe temperatures that drop below 32°F and remain there for several hours. A hard freeze can do damage to plant life, and/or cause freezing of water in water lines and one thing I can’t stand is putting that nasty ice on your car/truck windshield!Well we all know that you should cover or bring in plant life to keep the vegetation warm enough to service thecold. That’s why my wife’s lemon trees are decorating our family room tonight. For water pipes it is good if youhave exposed water lines to have the water drip from an outside faucet. What this does is relieve the expansion offreezing water that could form in your waterlines causing your waterlines to crack or burst. This is the most costlydamage that can occur from a hard freeze so take precautions if you feel it is necessary. The biggest small nuisance however is the Car Window! It’s cold and of course when it is cold you are late for work! You have ice on your window but you got to go! So what to do?Turn on the car and start your defrost! It is always good to let your car warm up for at least a minute before youdrive it anyways. This not only helps your engine, it will get things moving on your windshield too. Still not fastenough? Time to break out the scrapper! Remember never hit the ice in a downward force because you may hit it toohard causing damage to your window! When scrapping Start at the bottom middle of the windshield because that iswhere the defrost air is warming the window surface the most.Still need to go faster? Water time?!The Big question ~ Hot Water or Cold Water? Does hot water freeze faster than cold? Well there is something calledthe Mpemba effect and it is the observation that, in certain specific circumstances, warmer water will freezesfaster than colder water. But will hot water help you with your windshield? My observations and recommendation is to go with the cold water. First never use boiling water. carrying a pot ofboiling water is dangerous! If there is ice on your window there could be ice that you slip on in the drive way!Plus because of shock effect you could do damage to your windshield by pooring boiling water on a cold window. Sono boiling ok!
Hot tap water? Well how long does it take to wait on the hot water? A minute or two? That’s too long you have togo! So is it cold water then? Yes! Here is a couple reasons, one you don’t have to wait for the water to get warmand even the cold water will melt the ice on your windshield. Second you want to get your cold water flowing in yourhome’s water pipes. Just like the drip effect this filling the pot with water helps keep the water from freezingplus it helps with the expansion effect that causes the pipes to burst. If you must do water, watch your shoes! Nowet shoes because that would be bad and it always seems when you deal with water the shoes get wet! So my overallsuggestion would be take your time let the defrost work and use the scrapper if need be.

www.airconditioninglawrenceville.com

Invasion of the Air Conditioners

Invasion of the Air Conditioners
Air Conditioner units clinging to the sides of buildings are a regular sight these days, especially in humid parts of the world, and as such generally exist without so much as a glance from passers-by. It’s only when you step back and actually focus on the (usually) creamy beige boxes that you begin to realise just how common they are and just how sweaty the general population of these parts would be without them. We came across a photo today (the first one below) that actually blew our minds (no pun intended) and resulted in a search for more examples of buildings seemingly under attack from exterior A/C units. So, to celebrate these urban barnacles, here are just a few examples of Extreme Air Conditioning.

President Obama’s Weatherization Plan

The Weatherization Plan has got my attention. It’s actually been around, but to me, kind of ineffective.Hence since no one really knew about it before this stimulus package
I have read a little on this plan, I do not know much since there isn’t much aboutit only what was done last year.I will say I will know about the weatherization package since I hope it will helpin business and possibly personal.
Hopefully in future blogs I will describe detail outlines of President Obama’s Weatherization Plan. How it can effect a Company who participates in the plan, will it be enough to make a company who participates in the plan grow so they can hire and create new jobs.
Second,What does it actually take to qualify? What will it actually do for a home owner who qualifies for the weatherization? What paper work one must do to qualify? Is there a cost to qualify? How much can a home owner receive for weatherization?
I hope to find these answers out and more. The bill combines spending and tax incentives designed to get the American economy moving again by investing in our nation’s road and energy infrastructure, and increasing the energy efficiency and performance of America’s homes and commercial buildings.
For qualified improvements, homeowners may be able to claim tax credits equal to 30% of the installed costs (up to $1,500).
The new tax credits are retroactive to January 1, 2009, and expire on December 31, 2010. The $1,500 limit is for all improvements made during the two year term, not $1500 each year.
Homeowners may use the entire $1,500 tax credit limit on a single qualifying improvement. The previous per-appliance caps that limited the homeowner to just $150 for a high efficiency furnace or $300 for a high efficiency central air conditioner or heat pump have been removed.
Homeowners that previously claimed tax credits in 2006 or 2007 are eligible for the full $1,500 limit. And, in the era of sustainable thinking and living, how to reduce that cost in a greener way is foremost on many consumers’ minds. The question is this; why can’t we have an air conditioning system that can keep our family cool 24/7, but not worry about increased energy costs or the environmental impact?Enter the idea of a solar assisted air conditioner. Now I know what you’re thinking, “It’s going to be a thing of the future, maybe another five years at least.” Actually… it’s already here, right now... today! Why haven’t you heard about it? Probably because summer has just arrived and most people don’t think too much about their A/C system until it gets blazing hot out or it breaks down. Temperatures are topping out in most of the nation, so it’s likely you’ll start to see stories on the first widely available solar air conditioner, just as energy prices and air conditioning bills are also rising. In addition to the solar feature, this air conditioning system is just teaming with innovation and futuristic features. So without further adieu, here’s everything you need to know about the first integrated solar-assisted residential heating and air conditioning system. To learn more about solar AC...check out www.airconditioningdacula.com

How often should I change my AC Filters?

There are some very important things that you should do to extend the life of your air conditioner and keep it working at peak efficiency at all times. One of the most important things that you can do is change your air conditioner or furnace filter every three to six months.
Every home is different and there are many factors that effect how long you should wait between filter changes. Wait too long and the efficiency of the equipment will deteriorate and operating costs go up. Change your filter too often and it's like throwing money away. Considering the cost of some filters that could add up to a lot of money over time.
It is important to keep in mind that the more efficient your air conditioner filter is the more often it will have to be cleaned or replaced. For most people pleated filters will do an adequate job. These filters are ten to sixty percent efficient and some manufacturers claim even higher efficiencies.

Pleated filters should be changed every three to six months. If you live in an area with lots of dust then you should probably change your filter about every three months.
If you require more efficient air filtration you may want an electrostatic, electronic or even a HEPA filter. The more efficient the filter is the more often it will have to be cleaned or replaced.
Electrostatic filters probably offer the best combination of value and efficiency. You will pay between two to six times what a good quality disposable filter would cost but you just wash them with water when they become dirty and reuse them.

Electronic filters will never become dirty enough to effect airflow. They just become inefficient and there ability to remove dust from the air deteriorates as they become dirty. To clean these filters you have to remove the electronic cells and soak them in some like HVAC cleaner and then rinse them and let them dry.

HEPA filters are the most efficient filters available and become plugged very quickly. They need to be checked monthly and often cause too much restriction to airflow to be used at all. An air conditioner contractor will be able to tell you if it is worth trying one of these in your system.
If you are using economy panel filters from your local hardware store and getting a pack of four for five or ten dollars, you are not doing yourself, your family or your air conditioning equipment any favours. When it comes to rating filters, these are at the bottom of the list.
These filters do such a poor job you could leave one in your air conditioner for a year and it would not collect enough dust to require changing. The unfortunate thing is the evaporator coil of your air conditioner would need to be cleaned every year to remove the dirt that should have been stopped by the filter.

For more information call Richard Hixon at 770-513-3558 or visit his websites at www.airconditioningdacula.com or www.airconditioninglawrenceville.com

Preventive Maintenance

As we move from summer to fall and we no longer have to have our AC unit on full blast, it is always a good idea to make sure your unit is set up for a smooth transition into the winter months. When the windows close come October, and the heater is kicked into gear, the last thing you want is for no hot air to fill the room and you and your family to be bundled under eight blankets on the couch. Preventive Maintenances are the best way to ensure that you are not left in the cold and your air conditioning unit is prepared to make the switch to hot air. This can save you money in the long hall, just like you would bring your car in for a tune up before a major melt down.

With so many AC Companies out there...who can I trust?

The number of Air Conditioning Contractors in the U.S. seems to be ballooning moment by moment. So with the growing number of choices a consumer has to make on a daily basis as it is, how do you know you are making the right call when your house is at 90 degrees and you want it at 70 degrees, and fast. A great place to start is by of course checking out AC Contractors websites. Do they have referrals? Have they been in business for over 10 years? Are they part of the Better Business Bureau and what is their rating? Many agregator websites and the Google maps section have consumer feedback about contractors that will give you a sense of what you could be walking into when choosing a particular contractor. So when things are hot and you need to cool off, take a moment to make sure that whoever is coming to your house is equipped to do the job right at a fair price.
