What is Direct Selling?

Direct selling is a retail channel used by top global brands and smaller, entrepreneurial companies to market products and services to consumers. Companies market all types of goods and services, including jewelry, cookware, nutritionals, cosmetics, housewares, energy and insurance, and much more.

Ask questions

About the company, its leadership, the products or services, start-up fees, realistic costs of doing business, average earnings of distributors, return policies, and anything else you’re concerned about.

Get copies of all company literature

And read it!

Consult with others who have had experiences with the company and its products

Check to see if the products or services are actually being sold to consumers.

Investigate and verify all information

Do not assume that “official looking” documents are accurate or complete or even produced by the company, as opposed to the person trying to recruit you.

All of us know that water boils at 100 degrees.

Means, it changes its form from liquid to gas.

What happens when the temperature is 99 degrees? Its just hot water; no change in the form. No transformation. If you maintain the temperature at 99 degrees for hours together, water never changes its form. It is that One degree which makes all the difference. That One degree makes water transform to steam. And that steam can even make the trains run!

But most of the time we become impatient; we put the flame down when it hits 99 degrees. We kill the magic; the magic of that One degree How many times we must have put the flames down at 99 degrees? Who knows? At least from now on why not we follow this One Degree Phenomenon.

Whatever you are doing, do your best with absolute patience; then do a bit more; that One extra degree. That extra effort, extra hour of work, extra mile can unfold before you an unimaginable power

Rich people vs. Poor people.

This is not rich people vs. poor people. There are many poor people with a rich mindset, financially poor due to circumstance. And there are many trust fund babies with a poor mindset.
Rich mindset understands that the first goal is to gain a surplus of resources. Then, to use that surplus to accelerate things. Accelerate education. Accelerate a business. Accelerate the next generation.
Poor mindset immediately sees a surplus as an opportunity for consumption.
Rich mindset seeks to spend their time, resources, and energy on work that continues to pay off long after the effort has been invested. Rich mindset is all about getting a flywheel spinning. Building momentum. Creating systems that continue to generate value on their own.
Poor mindset is all about the short-term returns. Hours-for-dollars. Resources invested without an immediate return are resources wasted.
Rich mindset is willing to invest resources with seemingly no reward right away.
Poor mindset’s immediate thought is, “What’s in it for me?”. “Why pay money to fly to that conference, pay for the hotel, and spend all the time when they’re not even paying you?”
Rich mindset seeks to build relationships based on trust, liking, shared values, and mutual respect. People with the rich mindset help others and cultivate relationships with no expectation of anything in return.
Poor mindset thinks “I scratch your back, you scratch mine”.
Rich mindset understands that its reputation is everything, that trust and respect is earned slowly, through hard-fought, bloody effort – and that both can be lost in an instant.
Poor mindset believes it can get away with compromising its reputation to make a quick buck.
Rich mindset knows that the world isn’t fair, and deals with reality swiftly, humbly, and practically. It knows the world owes it nothing, that the universe is indifferent to its existence, that the default for life is suffering and death. All successes are improbable and should be appreciated as such.

LIFE COMES DOWN TO 5 SECOND DECISIONS - MEL ROBBINS

If there is any area of your #life that you wish to improve, use the 5 Second Rule.

If you need more #confidence, use the 5 Second Rule.

If you need #motivation, use the Rule.

If you are sick of #doubting yourself, use the 5 Second Rule.

How you use it?

The moment your instincts fire up (or you know you know you should do something) but you feeling yourself #hesitate, that’s when you use the Rule.

You have five seconds. Start counting backward to yourself, 5-4-3-2-1, then move.

If you don’t move within five seconds, your #brain will kill the #idea and you’ll talk yourself out of doing it.

Life comes down to five-second #decisions.

Do you take action or do you #listen to worry?

Do you start working on it or do you keep #overthinking and paralyze yourself?

Do you say something or do you feel #nervous and stay silent?

Five-second #decisions.

Five seconds is how fast your #selfdoubt kicks in and your mind goes to work against you.

That’s why you have to move even faster. And that’s why the 5 Second Rule is such a game changer.

When you start counting backward, you interrupt the habit of overthinking, you #assert #control, you focus yourself on taking new action, and you activate a different part of your brain.

The simple act of counting backward to yourself, 5-4-3-2-1, does some shockingly #powerful things in your brain.

In five seconds flat, you can #decide to go to the #gym, or decide to blow it off.

You can 5-4-3-2-1 and speak in a #meeting, or decide to stay quiet.

You can 5-4-3-2-1 and put down the booze, or decide to drink.

You can 5-4-3-2-1 and talk to the attractive guy/girl, or decide to feel #unworthy.

Here’s the problem–thinking about change won’t change you.

To change, you have to take action.

To improve anything, you have to find your courage to try.

How many times today have you said to #yourself, it can wait, I’ll do it #tomorrow, I don’t feel like it, I’m not ready? We all do it. It’s easy to #procrastinate, over think, worry and doubt yourself. I did it for years. It was a habit.

That’s where the 5 Second Rule comes in.

It will teach you to move from thinking about the #fears that hold you back to taking the actions that will #improve your life.

You change your life one five second decision at a time. It’s a fact.

Using the Rule costs you nothing and you can start right now.

And the next time you have an instinct to do something, and you feel yourself hesitate, 5-4-3-2-1 GO.

The 5 Second Rule is simple. If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it.

The moment you feel an instinct or a desire to act on a goal or a commitment, use the Rule.

When you feel yourself hesitate before doing something that you know you should do, count 5-4-3-2-1-GO and move towards action.

There is a window that exists between the moment you have an instinct to change and your mind killing it. It’s a 5 second window. And it exists for everyone.

If you do not take action on your instinct to change, you will stay stagnant. You will not change.

But if you do one simple thing, you can prevent your mind from working against you. You can start the momentum before the barrage of thoughts and excuses hit you at full force.

What do you do?

Just start counting backwards to yourself: 5-4-3-2-1.

The counting will focus you on the goal or commitment and distract you from the worries, thoughts, and excuses in your mind.

As soon as you reach “1” – push yourself to move.

This is how you push yourself to do the hard stuff – the work that you don’t feel like doing, or you’re scared of doing, or you’re avoiding.

That’s it. 5 seconds is all it takes.

If you don’t act on an instinct within that 5 second window, that’s it. You’re not doing it.

Now, I’m going to explain the 5 elements of the Rule and show you have every single element is important.

First: “The moment you have an instinct…”

Let’s make sure you understand what kind of instinct I am talking about.

An instinct is not buying everybody in the bar a round of shots. An instinct is not a rash, irreversible decision. It’s not destructive, illegal, or harmful behavior.

I define an instinct as any urge, impulse, pull, or knowing that you should or should not do something because you can feel it in your heart and gut.

These are instincts of the heart. They are moments when your heart speaks to you. We all have our own unique brand of wisdom, made up of our experiences, intuition, and DNA.

In those small, 5 second moments, this wisdom bubbles up inside of you.

Your instincts are these urges. They are the “knowing” that you should do something even if you don’t “feel” like doing it.

Second: “To act on a goal…”

The second element of the Rule that is critical for you to understand is that it’s not just about acting on any instinct, it’s an instinct that’s tied to a goal.

For example, you might have an instinct at get off of the couch and go for a run.

In this case, if you act on this instinct, you bring yourself one step closer to your dream of transforming your health.

A lot of people think instincts are stupid and meaningless. I disagree.

Research has shown that our gut is our “second brain.” Do you ever get a feeling in your gut telling you what to do?

We get these “gut feelings” when our hearts and minds are trying to tell us something. And usually, these gut impulses are tied to greater goals.

It’s easy for us to list what we want. We want a great job, to be financially free, to be healthy, happy, and have amazing people in our lives.

Even though we have these greater goals, it’s so simple to brush off the actions that will lead us toward achieving these things.

If you have a gut instinct to call a friend, then you should do it. You already know how much you value your friends. When you get that gut feeling to speak up in a meeting, you should act on it. Same goes with any instinct tied to a goal.

I’ve found that knowing where to start on a goal is difficult. People write to me all the time, asking me how they can get in shape, become happier, or get their dream job.

Do you know what they can do? First, start identifying those gut instincts that will lead you towards your goal.

You will start to notice gut feelings related to these goals throughout the day. But, how do you act on them?

That’s where the next element comes in:

Third: “You must push yourself…”

The third element of the 5 Second Rule is that you must push yourself. The Rule is about pushing yourself even when you don’t want to. It’s about taking control of your own life, one push at a time.

I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy. You’re comfortable. You’re doing the same old thing you always do, even if you want to transform your life.

The moment comes. You feel the instinct. You know it’s tied to a goal.

Right now. It’s a window. A window of opportunity.

Your brain wants to shut this instinct down. It’s going to do it.

But, in this moment, you can take control. You know what you need to do. You know that you want to change your life and move towards your goals.

The 5 Second Rule is simple. But it is not easy.

It’s hard to push yourself. If you want to change, it’s something you MUST do. And the Rule makes it easier.

Just start your countdown. Push yourself to start at 5. Just start counting. That’s it!

Countdown, 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1 – GO.

All of the neuroscience behind the Rule is in this post. In that blog, you can read about the neuroscience behind why physically moving while you count down activates your brain’s prefrontal cortex. I’m also going to teach you how the Rule shifts you out of autopilot mode and allows you to take control.

For now, you don’t have to worry too much about WHY the Rule works. Trust me for now. It really does.

And when you begin your countdown, you’re setting yourself up for ACTION.

This brings us to the 4th element:

Fourth: “To move within 5 seconds…”

Physical movement is key. Just so you understand, this doesn’t mean you have to jump up and start doing squats.

All you need to do is move in the direction of your instinct.

If you do not take physical action WITHIN 5 SECONDS, your brain will kill the instinct.

You do your countdown. And then you GO. You take action.

This could mean a number of things. It means saying something you’ve been holding back. Speaking up at a meeting. Putting on your running shoes. Grabbing that healthy snack. Holding your tongue instead of saying something mean to your partner. Sending that email to a potential client or mentor. Anything that’s related to your goal.

These 5 second windows, as I call them, are the critical moments between you changing your life and your brain stopping you.

You might be thinking, “Why 5 seconds? Why not 3 or 7 or 17?”

The answer is 5 seconds is a rule of thumb that can work for everyone. But obviously, this can be personalized.

Personally, I find that the longer I wait between my initial instinct to act and physically moving, the harder it is to force myself to move. If you can do 3 seconds, do it.

2 seconds? Even better. As little time as possible before you MOVE to action.

Remember, the system inside your brain that kills your dreams operates at lightning speed.

Which brings me to the fifth element of the Rule:

Fifth: “Or your brain will kill it.”

If you don’t physically move within 5 seconds, your mind WILL kill your dreams.

Your brain is like an overprotective, irrational, “helicopter” parent.

It thinks it’s keeping you safe when in fact it is keeping you from growing as a person, stretching yourself in your business, and fully experiencing life.

You see, your brain has 3 basic jobs.

It narrates your life as you live it and catalogs your memories.

It operates your body’s functions.

And it protects you from danger.

When you stop and think, when you hesitate, and when you feel uncertain, you are signaling to your brain that something’s wrong.

Your brain automatically goes into overdrive to protect you.

How does it protect you?

By keeping you from doing anything that feels scary, hard, or uncertain.

You know that there’s nothing dangerous about making a call or taking a walk or pursuing your dreams.

But your brain doesn’t know that, and it tries to sabotage you.

The 5 Second Rule is a way to outsmart your brain by changing hesitation into ACTION.

Before you doubt it, try it out.

It’s a tool that creates massive change. Those 5 second windows add up, I promise. It changed my life and it changed the lives of over 100,000 who have written to me about the awesome effects the Rule has created in their own lives.

In almost any situation, there’s an application for the Rule.

Lead By Example: 4 Elements of True Inspiration

Do you remember being a child in school, and catching yourself gazing out the window, your mind off in a distant place? Maybe you even got in trouble for daydreaming some grand vision for yourself.

Ironically enough, the kind of thing that might earn a 12-year-old a reprimand from the teacher is a common practice among the greatest leaders I’ve been around and studied. The best leaders are always dreaming. I believe, that “the higher you go in leadership, the more your work is about the future.”

At the same time, true leaders are practical enough to know that vision without action achieves nothing. They are stewards of their vision. The temptation may be to simply communicate this vision, but the best of the best will communicate it clearly, creatively and continually while going beyond communication. The leader must also live the vision. He or she will effectively model the vision to make the picture truly come alive for the whole team.

Good leaders are conscious of the fact that they are setting the example and others will follow them, for better or worse. Your behavior can inspire others to do great things, perfectly in line with your vision, or to move in circles.

The Law of the Picture, as I call this principle, is perhaps most apparent in times of chaos and uncertainty. In challenging times, consider these insights on how to be the model of energy, passion and motivation for the people who follow you.

1. Followers are always watching you.

If you are a parent, you have probably already realized that your children are always watching what you do. They don’t miss a thing! Your children learn more from what they see you do than from anywhere else. As parents, Margaret and I realized this early. No matter what we taught our children, they insisted on behaving like us. How frustrating!

Just as children watch their parents and emulate them, so do employees watching their bosses. If the bosses come in late, then employees feel that they can, too. If the bosses cut corners, employees cut corners. People do what people see.

Followers may doubt what their leaders say, but they usually believe their actions. And they imitate it.

2. It’s easier to teach than to do.

One of my earliest challenges as a leader was to raise my level of living to the level of my teaching. I still remember the day I decided I would not teach anything I did not try to live out. That was a tough decision, but as a young leader, I was learning to embrace the Law of the Picture.

Author Norman Vincent Peale stated, “Nothing is more confusing than people who give good advice but set a bad example.” I would say a related thought is also true: Nothing is more convincing than people who give good advice and set a good example.

3. We should work to change ourselves before changing others.

To improve the performance of the team, leaders must act as change agents. However, a great danger to good leadership is the temptation to try to change others without first making changes to yourself.

As a leader, the first person I need to lead is me. The first person I should try to change is me. My standards of excellence should be higher for myself than those I set for others. To remain a credible leader, I must always work first, hardest, and longest on changing myself.

To lead any other way than by example, we send a fuzzy picture of leadership to others. If we work on improving ourselves and make that our primary mission, it will more likely inspire others to follow.

4. The most valuable gift a leader can give is being a good example.

More than anything else, employees want leaders whose beliefs and actions line up. They want good models who lead from the front.

Leadership is more caught than taught. How does one “catch” leadership? It’s contagious: You get it from watching good leaders in action! The majority of leaders emerge because of the impact made upon them by established leaders who modeled leadership and mentored them.

When I think about my leadership journey, I feel that I have been fortunate to have excellent models from whom I have “caught” various aspects of leadership—perseverance from my father.

A Case Study with Actionable Insights

Leaders do not readily have answers, but they have to be skilled in navigating the problem-solving process in the search for an answer.

As a leader, one of your critical responsibilities is to coach your team. Coaching is an excellent way to develop introspection and problem-solving capabilities in your subordinates. Many leaders do not understand the importance of coaching in igniting high performance. It is an excellent tool in a leader’s repertoire, and every leader should develop his coaching skills. In this article, we will try to understand some important coaching skills using an example of a coaching conversation.

The example below shows the conversation between a leader and a subordinate. The coaching insights are italicized in parentheses:

Suresh: I need to talk about Akash with you. I find him very rude, and it’s difficult to work with him.

Amit (Leader): Have you attempted to address it in any way? (Checking if any action has already been taken to resolve the problem.)

Suresh: No, I don’t know what to do. (A coaching moment – the subordinate is expressing his inability to address the problem, and is asking for help. He is willing to be coached.)

Amit (Leader): Let me understand you better. Can you give me an example of the rudeness you are referring to? (Probing to understand the problem in depth.)

Suresh: Yes, in fact, it happened yesterday. I went up to his desk and asked him by when he would give the details I had asked for. He replied rudely saying he was too busy, and will send me an email to let me know when he can give it.

Amit (Leader): It can be quite hurtful when someone is rude. (Validating his feelings. This is very important because the person feels heard and understood, which further increases his willingness to be coached.)

Amit (Leader): How exactly does his rudeness impact you and your work? (Continued probing to find how it is impacting work, and getting Suresh to think about it too. Suresh may not have thought about it earlier. Knowing how it impacts work builds up a valid case to make a change.)

Suresh: Ummm... you know when someone is rude, you just don’t want to interact with them. I reach a point where I don’t want to have anything to do with him.

Amit (Leader): And how does it impact your work? (Suresh didn’t answer the impact on work question, so Amit repeats it to catalyse his thinking process.)

Suresh: It can cause delays, because I avoid interacting with him directly. I send emails when the work can be done faster by speaking one-on-one. There is more time spent on preparing how to deal with him, instead of discussing the work.

Amit (Leader): So, if you were to clearly define your problem statement in a sentence or two, what would you say? What do you want to achieve and why? (After a few layers have been peeled, this is an attempt to get a better grasp on the problem statement.)

Suresh: I want Akash to stop becoming rude.

Amit (Leader): Yes, that’s a start. You want him to stop becoming rude, so that...? (Further attempt to refine and complete the problem statement by adding what is needed as the final outcome.)

Suresh: Ummm... So that I can work easily with him, and work can get done faster.

Amit (Leader): Let me re-phrase this and see if I have understood you. You want Akash to stop being rude, so that you can work easier and faster with him. Is that right? (Continued refining of the problem statement.)

Suresh: Yes, that’s it

Amit (Leader): Have you ever thought if there is something that you do which triggers his rudeness? (Challenging assumptions and introducing new thoughts and ideas. Peeling further layers to help Suresh become aware of his own contribution to the problem.)

Suresh: I don’t know, maybe I will think about it.

Amit (Leader): Yes, think about it. Introspect and see what you can do differently, to avoid triggering him. Maybe, there is something there. Let me again paraphrase the problem statement: “To develop a better relationship with Akash, so that it’s easier and faster to work with him”. What do you think? Could this be a more accurate problem statement to work upon? (Continued refining of the problem statement - Summarising and reflecting back to Suresh to check if this is a better and more complete problem definition.)

Suresh: Yes, probably that is better.

Amit (Leader): For a relationship to work, both people have to make an effort (Knowledge sharing). So, one thing you can do is to think about how you can stop triggering him. Second, do you think it will help to tell him how you feel when he’s rude, and how it impacts your work? (Offering actionable suggestions.)

Suresh: Yes, I think it will help to talk. But, will he listen?

Amit (Leader): Good question! What would you need to do for him to listen to you, understand you completely, and offer to make changes from his end? (Again, catalysing Suresh’s own thinking on how to handle this.)

Suresh: I guess I need to be calm and polite. I shouldn’t make it accusatory and blame him. If I talk about how our relationship is important for our work, and that both of us need to work at it, then he is more likely to listen.

Amit (Leader): Good, now think over the following two things, and let’s catch up after a few days:

1) What will you change about yourself so as not to trigger him?

2) How will you tell him about his rudeness, and the importance of improving your relationship in a way that he listens, and tries to improve the relationship from his end too?

(Further introspection and action items for Suresh to work upon.)

Coaching Skills

Deep Inquiry & Questioning – Hold back on the urge to offer answers straight away. Many of us jump into offering advice and solutions. Don’t succumb to that temptation. The purpose is firstly to get a good grasp of the real problem, and secondly, to improve the thinking capacity of your subordinate. To do this, you have to hone your questioning skills. It needs empathetic curiosity – where you are genuinely seeking to understand things from the subordinate’s perspective. This is different from arrogant or judgmental questioning. Your tone, body language and choice of words must reflect empathy. Only then will you be able to establish a rapport, and get him to open up to you.

The intent is to ask questions to stimulate the subordinate’s thinking, and catalyse the thought process. The person goes deeper within to find the answer, and this generates greater awareness around the problem. You need to create a churn, a back and forth of questions and answers, which takes the thinking forward and deeper, and eventually yields the nectar of insight.

Some possible questions are:

• What is the exact problem?
• What are the obstacles you are facing?
• What will happen if things don’t change?
• What are the options you have?
• What have you already tried?
• What is your main concern here? How much …? How many …?
• Who else does it affect?
• What are the main risks here?

In the above conversation, notice the emphasis on refining and completing the problem statement. A large chunk of the conversation is devoted to defining the problem statement holistically. And, in our example, it took multiple iterations of questions and answers to get to it. Getting to the correct problem definition is half the problem solved. If we start with the wrong problem statement, then it’s wrong all the way from there. So, make sure you get this part right.

Listen & Reflect – You have to listen deeply, not just with your ears, but your entire body. And listen not just to his words, but to what his entire body is telling you. Listen to the body language, posture, hand and eye movements, the tone, the said and the unsaid. Everything. This is the highest order of listening, and it requires complete presence from your side. Unclutter yourself of your thoughts and pre-occupations, and prepare to become a receptacle to take it all in. Put aside your phone, laptop and ensure you’re not doing anything else during this conversation.

First listen, and then reflect back. When you reflect back you are untangling the knots, bringing about clarity and separating the meaning from the noise. Reflection needs paraphrasing and clarifying – sharing what you have understood in your own words, and checking if your understanding is correct. It also needs summarizing, where you pull together different threads of the conversation into a coherent meaning. You have to help the subordinate make meaning out of the storm of thoughts in his head.

Joint exploration for the answers – Leaders do not readily have answers, but they have to be skilled in navigating the problem-solving process in the search for an answer. The joint exploration of the problem includes knowledge sharing, offering suggestions, giving advice, and challenging the subordinate’s perspective or assumptions. Your ability to ask the right questions, offer suggestions, share advice, challenge his thinking are crucial in this joint exploration process.

Make the time to coach – You need to have the time, or make the time to have this conversation. This is about teaching a man how to fish, instead of giving him fish to satisfy his hunger for a day. By doing this, you will develop his introspective skills – where he can reflect on a problem, ask questions to himself, and peel the onion layer-by-layer to get to the root of the problem. It may consume time in the beginning, but will give you excellent returns in the long run, when the subordinate develops superior problem-solving skills.

Close with well-defined next steps (action items) – Jointly define the actions to be completed before the next meeting. This is the application of the learnings in the real world, and will take the coaching forward. Continue this process for a couple of meetings, iterating through with review of action items, reflection and joint exploration. Over time, you will see a significant shift in your subordinate’s approach to problems. You will also have the positive side effects of higher engagement, and increased respect for you as a leader.

You need to stop working the wrong way

At the end of the day, there is no quick, easy path to success. Being successful requires hard work and dedication. But, there are ways to make it easier on yourself.

You can work hard, and you can dedicate time to work, but if you are simply going through the motions, then you are working the wrong way. If you simply show up to work and go home, or go to the gym and do the same thing every single time, then you are working the wrong way.
This isn’t work that will get you what you want out of life, all this will do is keep you busy. Your days will become boring, and they will blend together, and you won’t be able to see a noticeable progression, because you weren’t working toward one. You might find yourself bored or even depressed.
You need to stop working the wrong way, and challenge yourself to make the change in your mind and your behavior that will lead to the place you want to be.

This English proverb ‘where there is a will there is a way’ is means that we cannot succeed in life without having the will power and determination towards the goal achievement.

Generally, all of us have a goal in life which we work to achieve; however, the final goal is achieved only by the people who have strong will power and work hard with complete dedication. Will power is necessary to create a way of surety of getting goal in life. Most of us do not succeed in life as they don’t have strong determination and will towards achieving the goal. The meaning of this English proverb ‘where there is a will there is a way’ is when we have strong will to get something in life; surely we get that in future. Most of the people who are not determined towards their goal generally tend to curse their fate or misfortune.

But the fact of getting failure in life is that we don’t have will and dedication towards the task. We should blame ourselves and our negligence only and not our fortune. Having wish to get something is not enough; we have to work actively in right direction with strong will power.

I’ve often said that the major reason for setting a goal is for what it makes you do to accomplish it. This will always be a far greater value than what you get. That is why goals are so powerful—they are part of the fabric that makes up our lives.

Goal setting provides focus, shapes our dreams and gives us the ability to hone in on the exact actions we need to take in order to get everything in life we desire.

Goals are exciting because they provide focus and aim for our lives. Goals cause us to stretch and grow in ways we never have before. In order to reach our goals, we must become better; we must change and grow.

A powerful goal has three components:

It must be inspiring.
It must be believable.
It must be one you can act on.

When your goals inspire you, when you believe and act on them, you will accomplish them.

The basis for knowing where we want to go is knowing where we came from and where we are. It also knows how well we have done achieving things we have previously set our eyes on. This is the essence of evaluation and reflection. We need to understand how to look at what we have done and then use that as a platform for what we want to do next.

The process of evaluation is relatively simple, but can be varied a bit. The important point is having a process. Here is the basic process for evaluation and reflection:

1. Find a quiet place.

Reflection is best done away from distraction. It gives your mind space to think.

2. Take a regular time.

Whether it is once a week, every other week, once a month or quarter, be sure to set aside a regular time at regular intervals to evaluate and reflect.

3. Look at what you have accomplished and where you are.

Be specific. Be truthful. Be ruthlessly honest.

4. Write it down.

Keep a record. This gives you the chance at the next stage of evaluation to see exactly where you were last time and keeps it as objective as possible.

5. Look forward and set your next goal.

Stretch yourself according to what works for you.

That is the basic process of evaluation and reflection. If you have not done this before, then this will get you going. Be sure to follow the general idea and set aside time for your evaluation and reflection.

Now, the purpose of evaluation is twofold. First, it gives you an objective way to look at your accomplishments and your pursuit of the vision you have for your life. Second, it shows you where you are so you can determine where you need to go. In other words, it gives you a baseline from which to work.

We have all heard the quote that the unexamined life is not worth living. To evaluate and reflect brings us face to face with who we are and what we have become. More important, it allows us the time to dream and create a vision for what we want to become. Only when we take time out of our busy schedules can we get into the state of mind and quietness of heart we need in order to find that inner place where we see what we are and what we can become. Those who never take time to evaluate and reflect will blow to and fro through this life, living by the forces of culture, circumstances, societal pressures and, unfortunately, personal weaknesses. In contrast, those who take the time to evaluate will find they are like an oak tree in a storm: They have a firm foundation, know where they are going, how to get there and, ultimately, they will get there no matter what comes their way!
