Solaire Open moves to a new venue

Manila, Philippines, February 24: The Solaire Open will move to a new venue in the Philippines when the US$300,000 event returns onto the Asian Tour Schedule for the second consecutive season.

The Solaire Open, won by Lin Wen-tang of Chinese Taipei last year, will be staged at The Country Club in the City of Santa Rosa, Laguna, located in the outskirts of Manila from March 13 to 16.

This will be the second time The Country Club (TCC) will host an international golf tournament at its prestigious championship course which was designed by golf legend and master golf course architect Tom Weiskopf. In 2005, the TCC hosted the Southeast Asian Games golf event.

The Solaire Open is poised to attract the leading Filipino stars including Angelo Que, who is a three-time Asian Tour winner, Antonio Lascuna, Mars Pucay, young gun Miguel Tabuena and Elmer Salvador.

Lin, who dramatically won the event in 2013 to end a four-year title drought, is expected to defend his title against a plethora of Asian Tour stars including Anirban Lahiri of India, Nicholas Fung of Malaysia and Siddikur Rahman of Bangladesh, who are all part of Team Asia who will face Team Europe in the inaugural EurAsia Cup presented by DRB-HICOM in Malaysia from March 27-29.

Thomas Arasi, President and Chief Operating Officer of Solaire Resort and Casino, expressed his delight with the extended partnership with the Asian Tour, which is the region’s official sanctioning body for professional golf.

Not since Katharine Hepburn swung a club in Pat & Mike has anyone cared much about raising the profile of golf in the cool stakes. Perhaps it seemed like a lost cause, all those ill-fitting beige chinos, fluted calf-grazing skirts, and uptight cardigans? Understandably, it’s one sport that’s been dodged by most designers who have played into the mood for modern athleticism over the past few seasons, but regardless, Felipe Oliveira Baptista took up the challenge for fall. After poring over archival imagery of Golf de Chantaco, the Lacoste family club in the Basque region of France, he spun those archaic uniforms into something that could realistically be seen on his acolytes in their twenties and thirties (which is perhaps why the collection teasers his team posted on Instagram in the run-up to the show generated some serious buzz).

“It’s always about this idea of past and future and a technicality to the clothes,” said the designer backstage as models walked by in monogrammed beanies, oversize coats, and loose, menswear-inspired pants. “But I also love this idea of comfort, this idea of wrapping yourself.” Knits spun from virgin wools and embroidered with the clubhouse name played into that notion. As did varsity jackets with softly cocooning shoulders that had been cut elegantly into thigh-grazing and calf-skimming dresses. But despite the focus on relaxation, the collection wasn’t without a more sensual spin. Variations on a fluted miniskirt and boxy sweater pairing (which, in an ode to the seventies, was splashed in either a graphic checkerboard print or monochromatic burgundy) offered a more flirtatious edge and a nod to Lacoste’s eternally playful joie de vivre.

Lady Golfer: Cheyenne Woods Wins Australian Ladies Masters 2014

Cheyenne Woods won the Australian Ladies Masters at Royal Pines, beating Australian amateur Minjee Lee by two strokes.

It was the 23-year-old Woods' first major professional victory. She's the daughter of Tiger Woods' half brother Earl Dennison Woods Jr. Like Tiger, Cheyenne got her first golf lesson in Earl Sr.'s garage.

Woods shot a 4-under 69 in the final round to finish at 16-under for the tournament. She turned pro in 2012 following an impressive collegiate career at Wake Forest. She twice won All-American honors, finished with the lowest scoring average in school history, and won the 2011 ACC Championship

"I always knew that professional golf was something I was going to do," Woods told Golf Magazine. "There was never a second thought, I always knew that I was going to be on the LPGA Tour eventually. And I'm still working toward that. But I know that it will happen."

It was all smiles for Woods on Day 3, as she carried a one-shot lead into Sunday's final round.

"I want to prove to myself that I'm able to do it and I'm not just Tiger Woods' niece who gets all this attention," Woods told Golf Magazine. "Also, I would love to be the first African American woman to win on the LPGA Tour."

Woods failed to qualify for the LPGA Tour in December, but she'll tee it up next at the LPGA Tour-sanctioned Women's Australian Open in Victoria.

The World’s Most Expensive Cocktail Marks The Opening Of Moscow’s First Ice Terrace

While New York rocked to the most expensive Super Bowl party, Moscow raised a toast to the most expensive cocktail. The $50,000 cocktail was launched to mark the opening of the city’s first-ever ice terrace with a bar at Reka Moscow restaurant.

This most expensive alcoholic beverage was bought by the restaurant’s regular guest and a successful entrepreneur, Andrei Melnikov. The price-raising ingredients of this over-the-top cocktail are three one and 1.5-carat diamonds provided by the event’s jewelry sponsor, Crivelli.

Opened on 31st January, the Winter Terrace at Reka Moscow is fashioned entirely out of ice by leading ice-sculptors. They claim to have shipped in 200 tons of pure Siberian ice to create this living masterpiece. Those who haven’t been able to raise a toast with the most expensive cocktail can opt for other Hennessey VSOP cocktails at a bar chiselled out of ice, by BMW designer Chris Bengle, while sitting on an ice stool. Don’t shiver at the thought of being surrounded by all ice as the restaurant has installed a special infrared heating system to keep the guests warm in their ice-sculpted kingdom.

Winter Terrace at Reka Moscow was conceptualized by Michel Lombardi, Reka Moscow’s head chef, to give a chance to Moscow’s high society the chance to eat out for a change. He states, “I like adventures. My whole career has been an adventure - not least of which was my move to Russia. The harsh winters, adjusting to a new culture and especially to life in the kitchen here - it all was a challenge. But now, just two years later, I feel completely at home. My feeling is that an ice terrace suits the country of Russia, a land of snow and ice. And we have gone out of our way to create something really special, something which will make Muscovites who are used to the best stop and say: Wow, this is amazing!”

There are perks to being Porsche’s brand ambassador. Just ask tennis star Maria Sharapova. She recently showed off a new Porsche Panamera GTS that was built to her specifications by the Porsche Exclusive personalization department.

On the outside, Sharapova’s Panamera GTS sports a high-gloss white paint job with black LED headlights, tinted LED taillights, black tailpipes and 20-inch Panamera black alloy wheels.

Inside, Sharapova opted for the extended leather trim option with contrast stitching. The Porsche crest has been embroidered on the headrests. The cabin comes with carbon fiber door sill guards with ‘Maria Sharapova’ lettering.

The Porsche Panamera GTS has a 4.8-liter V-8 good for 440 horsepower. It has a top speed of 178 mph, and can go from 0-60 in just 4.5 seconds.

Sharpova was showing off her new Panamera at the Sochi Olympic games. She was named the spokesperson for Porsche last April.

Over the years, golf clothing and fashion has evolved from simply clothes that protect the wearer from weather on the course to clothes that offer a personal statement of style as well as individuality. Even with today’s use of technical fabrics such as Gore-Tex, there still remains that all-important element of unique style.

Back in the 1700s and 1800s, golfers played in knee length-breeches which they wore with tail coats, this emphasis on looking smart and playing smart still stands today. During the early 1900s, golf earned the reputation of being a sport for gentlemen, and conservative playing clothes of long trousers, morning jackets and ties were popular playing attire of the Victorian age.

During the two world wars, golfers began experimenting with their golf clothes – it was at this time that a more casual playing look became favourable, with players opting to wear sleeved shirts rather than suit jackets. It was this playing era that the bow tie became a popular accessory.

The focus on casual clothing continued during the 50s and 60s when relaxed khaki trousers and polo shirts became staple golf wear.

The 70s and 80s brought the arrival of golf wear in bright colours and patterns – this period also marked the arrival of the funky golf trousers (patterned, checked or bright trousers that remain popular even today). Leading golfers such as Nick Faldo and Seve Ballesteros led the trend in wearing vibrant colours on the green and golfers around the world followed suit by opting for golf wear such as bright orange sweaters, bold pink socks and eye-catching blue polo shirts.
