Three Little Birds

Three Little birds outside my door step.

A mother robin diligently makes her nest just outside my back porch rain gutter. Everyday I see the progress as she flies back and forth with whatever material she was making the nest out of. It was a 50/50 deal as half of what she brought over would end up on the neighbors' driveway. This went on for about a week back & forth, tap, tap, tap it into place, back & forth and form the nest. Every so often during the times when she was really hustling she would perch on a tree and look out, look at her nest and continue on.

A couple weeks pasted and soon I was hearing the chirps of new chicks. Growing fast and sounding off every time Robin would fly back with Big Fat worms. A lot of the time she does stop in the adjacent tree and look towards the nest and observe the surroundings. I am trying to catch her on film in this spot with the worms hanging out of her mouth.

I had thought for a week about taking some photos of the nest but always hesitated as I did not want to disturb Robin. I keep a potted garden on the back deck [with Kentucky Bleu Grass and such] so I am always out there tending to it. All the while Robin feels no threat just 3 feet away. AND The day I decided to take some shots was a good day. At first I had thought there were only 2 chicks but after close review of the photos I see there are three.

6.5.09 I hung my waist and camera off the side of the railing and started photographing. The nest is perched on top of the rain gutter and drapes down off it. The detail shot of the nest exhibits the most incredible mud nest I have seen up close.

6.13.09 It seems the birds have grown quickly and grown out of their nest.
I enjoyed watching Robin for the 5 weeks she was taking care of her three little birds. The chirping on my door step was soothing and serene.
One of life's joys of nature.

For me photography is a means of expressing my passion of objects and architecture [as in the ironworks red barn with all the branding metals etched into the main door, and
a way of celebrating the poetry of nature[ as in the flock of birds flying above Washoe Valley or the rainstorm out of Carson Valley south], and
the handy work of man [the 395 span in construction for good reason].

The Doctor Emmett Brown Project

"Emmett Lathrop "Doc" Brown, Ph.D. is a fictional scientist and is the inventor of the first time machine, which he builds out of a De Lorean sports car. His earlier inventions met with limited success, but got the De Lorean hover-converted and installed a "Mr. Fusion". The Mr Fusion reactor eliminated the need for plutonium, and allowed the time machine to operate off of ordinary household garbage."1.

Back to the Future may be a fictional story but this concept of harnessing energy from garbage is the now. Methane gases are being captured and processed into energy all over the country. The future of our landfills have a bright rainbow spanning over them. It's people like Brian Stocking, project manager with TD&H Engineering Consultants out of Kalispell who are engineering projects of the like. In cooperation with Flathead Electrical the county landfill is building a methane production facility.

n. An odorless, colorless, flammable gas, CH 4 , the major constituent of natural gas, that is used as a fuel and is an important source of hydrogen and a wide variety of organic compounds.2.

Energy innovation is possible when people willingly learn new ways of producing, delivering, and consuming energy. That means companies assume significant financial and technological risk when exploring the use of non-traditional fuels to produce power.
Today, America's rural electric cooperatives are taking great strides to change the way they provide power for their member-consumers. Because innovation is often expensive, there are benefits in partnering with others to get the job done. Recently, Basin Electric joined with other G&Ts and distribution cooperatives to form the National Renewables Cooperative Organization (NRCO).

It is also with the help of private citizens and proprietors like Downtown Pizza in Whitefish (550 East 1st Street) who use biodegradable take-away products. These vegetable based products include large clamshell containers, salad containers, cups and forks, knives and spoons. You can reuse the small salad containers and cups as seed starters, germinate and plant straight into the ground or toss in garbage. These products will aide in the process of decomposition at the landfill. Bravo! Kudos to all the other business not mentioned here.

Hellroaring Basin

Skiing on the hill that you know like the back of your hand is always a pleasure. It's like getting on that favorite toy you're really good at.
Taking runs that take you back to high school when all the good skiers were guys and your girlfriends couldn't keep up.
Every year my dad would take me up to the ticketing office and get me a season pass to "The Big Mountain Ski Resort" then to the ski swap. I look back now and am really glad he did because now I have a deep rooted love for the sport. That and camping, hiking & backpacking.

Over the years I have visited my hometown many times. Mainly because my parents still resided there. Home for summers and holidays and if it was winter we would always be on the mountain skiing. It has changed over the years...new lifts, new runs...unfortunately big strips of trees gone but still the mountain I know and love.
This past month I was back home to take care of my brother who had had back surgery. I was able to get in a few ski days and ran into old friends who showed me the newest development on the mountain, West Bowl. Well at least that's what we used to call it. I never liked going back there because I was always afraid I would ski too far down the ravine and have to hike out for hours. Well now it has lift access! It's incredible! They cut a 3.3 mile long cat track that accesses' all the double diamonds. The only name that stayed the same (I believe) is "Picture Chutes"

And let's not forget the snow ghosts. Because it's snows a lot & because it stays so cold. Their beauty I have never seen anywhere else and this is what makes Big Mountain Big Mountain. My mountain.

Reno Motel Life.
This book was inspired by a novel written by a Portland author and follows his story set in Reno Nevada in the late 1980's.

The Morris Hotel on East 4th Street

Reno Motel Life is a photographic story as the novel depicts a number of locations from local drinking holes, motels to the casinos. These landmarks and establishments have shaped Reno into what it is today, part bustling tourist destination part quiet town thriving on a good ole' entrepreneurial spirit.

The Hat that Saved Christmas!

Nov2008
It was a beautiful fall day when Ray and I decided to hike up Relay Peak and over to a back country hut on the north face. We have done a few dry hikes up where we would back country ski and get familiar with the terrain.

We started out 1.5 past the summit of Mt. Rose proper. The trail head is an easy walk up for about a mile then the elevation gain is moderate for the next 3 miles. Thick woods meandering back and forth which eventually hook back up with the service road.

We made it up to the radio towers and then switched back (SW) along the Tahoe Rim Trail and started our decent down the ridge.
The light was leaving us and after about 2 miles down decided to turn back and head out leaving the destination a dream. Reaching it on some other trek.

It still was a beautiful day and we made the decision the jet off down an unfamiliar ridge and bush whack out. Down a soft incline and sand skied for about 800 feet. WAHOO... and started heading east towards the most beautiful valley where the bears romp. NO bears in sight and felt our sense of direction was spot on. After ejecting all the sand out of our shoes we came upon a run off creek and followed it for about a hundred yards then the terrain got a bit steep and sketchy and this is where I believe my favorite blue Patagonia hat was left behind.

Yes it's true the hat fell out of the back waist of my pants and was left to be nibbled and used for nests.

All I could talk about for a few days is how I was going to go back up and retrieve this hat as i was somewhat convinced that I new where I had dropped it....Then Germany came and I was off to enjoy the Christmas markets and celebrate the season.

I had pretty much forgotten about the "blue hat" when Christmas came around.
Ray and I had a beautiful Christmas eve planned and were enjoying gifts when he said" are you sure you retrieved everything out of that box" I reached in again and realized he had put a false bottom in the box. I reached below and pulled out my FAVORITE blue hat and was so pleased and AMAZED he had found it.

Ray had actually retraced our hike while I was in Germany and found my hat. Is this man the man or what...? He is the shit!!

ps....the hat didn't really save Christmas but it sure made it special. : )

Snow, Snow, Snow...gear, gear, gear. Which is more comfortable. I say the BOOTS!!
When your friends (Carrie)are just as excited as you are for your gear you know it's time for the snow to fall... or maybe YOU just want the snow to fall and that's all that matters.

Yes it was an evening of free food and cheesy MC's but the after gathering of carrot cake and equipment try-on's made it all worth it. Let it snow Sugar bowl...Let it Snow. ** * ** ** ** ** * * *

Capturing Light is not only my blog but a project I have been working on which originally started in Chicago when I was still using film. Digital photography has transformed the way I shoot and allows much more control either with the camera or when I'm using photoshop. Most of my work is straight images without much manipulation on the computer. I simply adjust my levels, unsharp mask 45-85 depending on the image and then size it for whatever output I need. 200 dpi for smaller prints and 300 dpi for gallery quality.

Thought for the day: shoot & create like it's your last day on earth.
