Holly was born in late 1979. Holly's father travelled around due to work in the timber industry, and from age 2 to eleven, Holly grew up in distant parts of ice cold Alaska. Her family then moved back home to Oregon In 1999, Holly then moved to Los Angeles to attend University, where then to make extra money on the side Holly competed to become a model and worked at Hooters.
These rolls in work eventually led to invitations to the Playboy Mansion, at a time when Hefner had seven girlfriends. Holly moved into the mansion and became one of Hefner's official girlfriends in August 2001, after more than a year of visiting the mansion. Vickie Lynn Marshall (November 28, 1967 – February 8, 2007), better known under the stage name of Anna Nicole Smith,was an American model and television personality. She first gained popularity in Playboy, becoming the 1993 Playmate of the Year. She modeled for clothing companies, including Guess jeans. She starred in her own reality TV show, The Anna Nicole Show.

Born and raised in Texas, Smith dropped out of high school and was married at the age of 17. Her highly publicized second marriage to oil business executive and billionaire J. Howard Marshall, 63 years her senior, resulted in speculation that she married the octogenarian for his money, which she denied. Following his death, she began a lengthy legal battle over a share of his estate; her case, Marshall v. Marshall, reached the U.S. Supreme Court on a question of federal jurisdiction. In the months before her death, she was the focus of renewed press coverage surrounding the death of her son, Daniel Smith.

Born Vickie Lynn Hogan in Houston, Texas, Anna Nicole was the only child of Donald Eugene Hogan (born July 12, 1947) and Virgie Mae (née Tabers; born July 12, 1951), who married on February 22, 1967.Her father then left the family; he and Virgie divorced on November 4, 1969. Virgie's oldest child, Anna Nicole's half-brother, is David Luther Tacker, Jr. (born 1966). Anna Nicole was raised by her mother and aunt, Elaine (Todd) Tabers, wife of Virgie's brother, Melvin Tabers.

Virgie, who worked as a law enforcement officer in Houston for 28 years, subsequently married Donald R. Hart in 1971.Their child was Donald Ray Hart, Jr. (born 1972). After Virgie married Donald Hart, Anna Nicole changed her name from Vickie Hogan to Nikki Hart. Virgie and Donald Hart divorced in 1983. Virgie then married Joe D. Thompson (1987, divorced 1991), James T. Sanders (1996, died 1996), and James H. Arthur (2000).

Anna Nicole's father Donald married Wanda Faye Atkinson in 1970 and had the following children: Donna Hogan (born 1971), Donald Ray Hogan (born 1973), and Amy Hogan (born 1975).Donald and Wanda were divorced in 1978.[6] Donald married Carolyn S. Vandver in 1996.
Anna Nicole attended Durkee Elementary School and Aldine Intermediate School in Houston. When she was in the 9th grade, she was sent to live with her mother's younger sister, Kay Beall, in Mexia, Texas. While working as a waitress at Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken in Mexia, Anna Nicole met Billy Wayne Smith, who was a cook at the restaurant. The couple married April 4, 1985;she was 17 and he was 16. The next year, she gave birth to their son, Daniel Wayne Smith. She and Billy separated in 1987 and she moved to Houston with one-year-old Daniel. They were officially divorced February 3, 1993, in Houston.Initially, Anna Nicole found employment at Wal-Mart, then as a waitress at Red Lobster. She then became an exotic dancer, and in 1991, began taking modeling and voice lessons. In October of that year, she saw an ad in the newspaper to audition for Playboy magazine.

Smith's career took off after she was chosen by Hugh Hefner to appear on the cover of the March 1992 issue of Playboy, where she is listed as Vickie Smith, wearing a low-cut evening gown.Smith said she planned to be "the next Marilyn Monroe".Becoming one of Playboy's most popular models, Smith was heavier and larger than the typical Playboy model.[12] Smith was chosen to be the 1993 Playmate of the Year. By the time of her PMOY pictorial, she had settled on the name Anna Nicole Smith.

Smith secured a contract to replace supermodel Claudia Schiffer in the Guess jeans ad campaign in a series of sultry black and white photographs. Guess capitalized on Smith's strong resemblance to sex symbol Jayne Mansfield and put her in Jayne-inspired photo sessions. In 1993, before Christmas, she modeled for the Swedish clothing company Hennes & Mauritz (H&M). She was dressed in underwear and arranged in seductive poses. She appeared on big posters in Sweden and Norway.

A photograph of Smith was used by New York magazine on the cover of its August 22, 1994 issue titled White Trash Nation. In the photo, she appears squatting in a short skirt and cowboy boots as she eats chips. In October 1994, Smith's lawyer initiated a $5,000,000 lawsuit against the magazine claiming unauthorized use of her photo and that the article had damaged her reputation. Her lawyer said that Smith was told she was being photographed to embody the "all-American-woman look", and that they wanted glamor shots. He further stated that the picture used was taken for fun during a break.

On February 8, 2007, Smith was found unresponsive in room 607 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Tasma Brighthaupt, a friend of Smith who was a trained emergency nurse performed CPR for 15 minutes until her husband, Maurice "Big Moe" Brighthaupt, Smith's friend and bodyguardtook over CPR. He had frantically driven back to the hotel after being notified by his wife of Smith's condition.According to Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger, at 1:38 p.m. (18:38 UTC) Maurice Brighthaupt, who was also a trained paramedic, called the hotel front desk from her sixth floor room. The front desk in turn called security, who then called 911. At 1:45 p.m. the bodyguard administered CPR until paramedics arrived and she was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital at 2:10 p.m and pronounced dead on arrival at 2:49 p.m.

A phone call was released to the public on February 13, 2007 involving Seminole police and the local 911 operators, saying:
We need assistance to Room 607 at the Hard Rock. It's in reference to a white female. She's not breathing and not responsive...actually, it's Anna Nicole Smith.
After Smith's death, various legal battles began regarding: the will, the paternity of her daughter, and her final resting place, which resulted in the delay of her burial. Smith was finally buried March 2, 2007 at Nassau's Lakeview Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum in a plot adjacent to her son, Daniel. Daniel's father reportedly wants his son exhumed and reburied in his home state of Texas.

After a seven week investigation led by Broward County Medical Examiner and Forensic Pathologist Dr. Joshua Perper in combination with the Seminole police and several independent forensic pathologists and toxicologists, Dr. Perper announced that Smith died of "combined drug intoxication" with the sleeping medication chloral hydrate as the "major component." No illegal drugs were found in her system. The official report states that her death was not considered to be due to homicide, suicide, or natural causes. Ultimately her death was ruled an accidental drug overdose of the sedative chloral hydrate that became increasingly lethal when combined with other prescription drugs in her system, specifically 4 benzodiazepines: Klonopin (Clonazepam), Ativan (Lorazepam), Serax (Oxazepam), and Valium (Diazepam). Furthermore, she had taken Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) and Topamax (Toprimate), an anticonvulsant GABA agonist, which likely contributed to the sedative effect of chloral hydrate and the benzodiazepines. Although the individual levels of any of the benzodiazepines in her system would not have been sufficient to cause death, their combination with a high dose of chloral hydrate led to her overdose. The autopsy report indicates that chloral hydrate was the "toxic/lethal" drug, but it is difficult to know if chloral hydrate ingestion would have killed her alone, since Dr. Perper indicated (in the March 26 press conference) that she had built up a tolerance to the drug and took more than the average person. He indicated that she took about 3 tablespoons, whereas the normal dosage is between 1 and 2 teaspoons. Despite rumors of methadone use due to its involvement in her son's death, Dr. Perper only found methadone in her bile, indicating that it could only have been ingested 2-3 days prior to her death and was not a contributing factor. The autopsy report indicates that abscesses of buttocks (presumably from prior injections of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) and human growth hormone), and viral enteritis were contributory causes of death. Tests for influenza A and B were negative.It was reported that 8 of the 11 drugs in Anna Nicole Smith's system, including the chloral hydrate, were prescribed to Howard K. Stern, not Anna Nicole. Additionally, two of the medicines were written for Alex Katz and one was written for Anna Nicole's friend and psychiatrist, Dr. Khristine Eroshevitz. Dr. Perper acknowledged that all 11 prescriptions were written by Dr. Eroshevitz herself.Anna Nicole's will, drawn up in April 2001, named her son Daniel as the sole beneficiary of her estate, specifically excluded other children, and named Howard K. Stern as the executor. It indicated personal property valued at $10,000 and real property valued at $1.8 million (with a $1.1 million mortgage) at the time of death. A petition to probate Smith's will was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court. The petition to probate lists Larry Birkhead as a party with interest to Anna's estate.

Is Hef a polygamist?

According to Wikipedia, technically, he's not a polygamist as he doesn't claim to be married to the girls. Besides, he never actually divorced his previous wife Kimberly Conrad. Are other polygamists as dashing as Hef? Not really, no. Over at the Two Wives 'Polygamy Personals' website, they have quite a few men looking for extra wives, but single women are in short supply. I can't imagine why. Here's an ad from 'Ron': "Married 2 years. No children. Maybe in a few years. Still young. Looking for same. Like to have fun, fun, fun. In a good way, tho. Like music, stuff to move to. Dancing too, I guess. But not crazy into it. You know what I mean. Hard workers. We keep our bills paid. No drugs. No way. We are looking for permanent thing here. If you're not serious, no need to reply. Yes, we may like fun but we are not after one night stands and stuff like that. You know what I mean. We're not the skinniest people, but we are not obese. Kendra, Bridget, Hef and Holly . Challenging the perception that they are interchangeable Babushka dolls, the three current girlfriends actually star in a show called The Girls Next Door about their everyday lives with Hugh. The tagline is "We Call It a Fantasy. They Call It Home." They're not necessarily brainless either. Bridget, for example, is working towards her second masters degree. She's also over 30. Here are a couple of fascinating quotes from an interview with her:City Pages: Why do you think so many of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends are reluctant to admit that they actually have sex with the guy? One would assume that a woman and a man in a so-called relationship would sleep together, and yet all of the girlfriends have been very vague in the press. Jill Ann Spaulding: I think sleeping with someone as old as their great-grandfather isn't that prestigious. Saying you're beautiful enough to be in Playboy is one thing. Letting everyone know the only way you made it was having sex with the editor-in-chief is something most girls would leave out of the conversation. CP: According to your book, Hef's girlfriends lived by a very strict code of conduct: They were expected to arrange themselves in a certain way for public appearances, and were expressly forbidden to take their eyes off Hefner. Did you ever see anyone break the rules or defy Hefner's authority? Spaulding: Not everyone acted like a robot. When I was out once, I noticed one girl looking out into the crowd and going unaccompanied to the bathroom. However, she wasn't a girlfriend for much longer. Playboy is an American men's magazine, founded in Chicago, Illinois by Hugh Hefner and his associates, which has grown into Playboy Enterprises, Inc., reaching into every form of media. Playboy is one of the world's best known brands. In addition to the flagship magazine in the United States, special nation-specific versions of Playboy are published worldwide.
The magazine is monthly and features photographs of nude women, with articles on fashion, sports, consumer goods, and public figures. It also has short fiction by writers such as Arthur C. Clarke, Ian Fleming, Vladimir Nabokov, and Margaret Atwood. The magazine is known to express liberal opinions on most major political issues. Playboy's use of "tasteful" nude photos is classified as "softcore" in contrast to the more "hardcore" pornographic magazines that started to appear in the 1970s in response to the success of Playboy's more explicit rival, Penthouse.

Playboy's original title was to be Stag Party, but an unrelated outdoor magazine, Stag, contacted Hefner and informed him that they would protect their trademark if he were to launch his magazine with that name. Hefner and co-founder and executive vice-president Eldon Sellers met to seek a new name. Sellers, whose mother had worked for the Chicago sales office of the short-lived Playboy Automobile Company, suggested "Playboy."
The first issue, in December 1953, was undated, as Hefner was unsure there would be a second. He produced it in his Hyde Park kitchen. The first centerfold was Marilyn Monroe, although the picture used originally was taken for a calendar rather than for Playboy. The first issue sold out in weeks. Known circulation was 53,991.[1] The cover price was 50¢. Copies of the first issue in mint to near mint condition sold for over $5,000 in 2002.

The logo, the stylized profile of a rabbit wearing a tuxedo bow tie, was designed by art designer Art Paul for the second issue and has appeared ever since. A running joke in the magazine involves hiding the logo somewhere in the cover art or photograph. Hefner said he chose the rabbit for its "humorous sexual connotation," and because the image was "frisky and playful."
An urban legend started about Hefner and the Playmate of the Month because of markings on the front covers of the magazine. From 1955 to 1979 (except for a six month gap in 1976), the "P" in Playboy had stars printed in or around the letter. The legend stated that this was either a rating that Hefner gave to the Playmate according to how attractive she was, the number of times that Hefner had slept with her, or how good she was in bed. The stars, between zero and twelve, actually indicated the domestic or international advertising region for that printing.
Since reaching its peak in the 1970s, Playboy has seen a decline in circulation and cultural relevance because of competition in the field it founded — first from Penthouse, Oui (which was published as a spin-off of Playboy) and Gallery in the 1970s; later from pornographic videos; and more recently from lad mags such as Maxim, FHM, and Stuff. In response, Playboy has attempted to re-assert its hold on the 18–35 male demographic lled through slight changes to content and focusing on issues and personalities more appropriate to its audience — such as hip-hop artists being featured in the "Playboy Interview".
The magazine celebrated its 50th anniversary with the January 2004 issue. Celebrations were held at Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, and Moscow during the year to commemorate this event.

In many parts of Asia, including India, mainland China, Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Brunei, sale and distribution of Playboy is banned. In addition, sale and distribution is banned in almost all Muslim countries in Asia and Africa, such as Iran, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. However, it is sold in Hong Kong. In Japan, where genitals of models cannot be shown, a separate edition is published under license by Shueisha.
An Indonesian edition launched in April 2006, but controversy started before the first issue. Even the publisher said the content of the Indonesian edition will be different from the original edition but the government was trying to ban it by using anti-pornography rules, since the Indonesian government cannot ban any medium. A Muslim organization, the Islamic Defenders Front (IDF), opposed to Playboy on the grounds of pornography. On April 12 about 150 IDF members clashed with police and stoned the editorial offices. Despite this, the edition quickly sold out. On 6 April 2007 the chief judge of the case dismissed the charges because they had been incorrectly filed.[6]
In 1986, the American convenience store chain 7-Eleven removed the magazine. The store returned Playboy to its shelves in late 2003. 7-Eleven had also been selling Penthouse and other, more extreme, magazines before the ban.
In bookstores throughout the world, it is common for Playboy, as well as other adult publications, to be put on a higher shelf than other magazines, keeping them out of the reach of children. They are also often wrapped in opaque plastic bags so as to not reveal the cover.
Playboy was not sold in the state of Queensland, Australia during 2004 and 2005 but has returned as of 2006. Furthermore, due to declining sales, the last edition of the Australian edition of Playboy was January 2000 .

Many notable photographers have contributed to Playboy, including Richard Fegley, William Figge, Arny Freytag, Ron Harris, David Mecey, Russ Meyer, Pompeo Posar, Suze Randall, Herb Ritts, Stephen Wayda, Sam Wu, R Scott Hooper, Mario Casilli, and Bunny Yeager.

Photo editing
There is some controversy over airbrushing (or, in recent times, image editing) that is done on the photos featured in the magazine. Some readers say that this kind of photo-editing takes away from authenticity and makes photographs look unnatural.
One example was the case of Pamela Anderson and the "disappearing labia". In her original Playboy appearance in February 1990, there was a rear-view photo with her legs slightly apart and her labia minora visible. In reprints in later "Newsstand Specials" as well as a poster-sized print, she had been "defeminized," this area having been painted over in the color of the object in front of which she was standing.
Similarly, in Rena Mero's ("Sable") first Playboy shoot, one photo of Mero lying on her back was edited to add pubic hair over her genitalia. However, in the 50th Anniversary issue, this picture was printed in its original, unedited state.
Rival adult magazine Hustler and owner Larry Flynt has often been critical of Playboy and airbrushing. This has led Hustler to promote the fact that their nude pictorials are never airbrushed and are completely natural. This is a separate issue from whether the models are completely natural: that is, free of silicone breast implants.

The series focuses on the lives of Hefner's three girlfriends who live with him at the Playboy Mansion: Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson. Hefner, various Playmates, and other celebrities sometimes make guest appearances.

Ways To Keep Healthy

Set realistic targets and tackle one area of weakness at a time. Eat a more balanced diet and maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight or underweight it takes a big toile on your health and heart. Keep your alcohol intake within government-prescribed safe limits. If you smoke, look at ways to stop. Take more exercise. The human body needs to keep fit. Visit the doctor if you have a persistent health problem. Better safe than sorry. Consider how you might cultivate better ways to cope with stress. Stress has never ever been good for anybody’s health though we have it every day of our life.

You have to put yourself as a high priority. Sometimes it’s difficult to put yourself first. If you put yourself first - don’t forget about your loved one, don’t leave them behind. Start with your diet. Eat a balanced diet and do not eat if you are not hungry.
Moisturizer... Well you need this to keep your skin glowing and healthy. Use a mild moisturizer. Moisturize your whole body and pamper yourself. Exercise is so important to feel healthy and it will show on the outside in future. This circulates blood-flow and keeps you at a healthy weight. Jump robe, jog up and down stars or just around the block. Then I get to the topic of make-up. Never put on too much make-up, try to look as natural as possible. This brings grace to your face. Fun and entertainment doesn’t mean that you have to go party. You can have fun walking your dog alongside the beach or going to a movie. Do the fun and entertainment that suits you. Don’t bring your work home – have time to relax at home. Drugs are for fools. This will make you depressed. You might not see what drugs are going to do now but you will see in the future when your personality changes and you become an ugly and negative person. Music – well sing and go crazy. Music is a natural anti-depressant that harms none!

Hi there fellow readers!

I have to write up my articles on my personal computer and wait to go on to internet to post it. I have a few rules where I am living now about internet usage. I am only able to use it for approx. an hour. I have various topics I want to target. My main concern is to get more readers. Any tips you might have are welcome. I do not want my site to have negative review ‘cause of the content about Anorexia, as I understand that I am giving very details tips and diary entries. To protect this site I am looking into putting on a banner that says it has very detailed content about Eating Disorders in it. Anorexia is everybody’s choice and own business. This blog isn’t to discriminate against people who want to look good. I choose to become anorexic because everything I do I have to do to the extremes to get it right. Eating less and exercising more isn’t going to help me – I’ll never be the weight I used to be then. I won’t be happy until I weigh about 50kg. I’m 69kg now (roughly). So while I watch DsTV – Girls of the Playboy Mansion, Birth Stories, Dr 9012 what what and Patient Files, I’ll think of new topics and new ideas. Paula Abdul: Dancer, choreograph and singer Paula Abdul (American Idol Judge) battled bulimia and decided to check herself in a clinic, back in 1994. Her negative feelings about her own body image came as early as seven years old when she began dancing, but "it didn't manifest into a full-blown eating disorder until I was in high school." Today Paula Abdul is a spokesperson for the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). Paula courageously speaks out about her own past battles, in hopes of encouraging young women to take the scary, but necessary, steps to seek help. "It is one of the toughest things to talk about, bar none, and it is one of the hardest disorders to deal with because it's not black or white. Eating disorders really have nothing to do with food, it's about feelings."

Fiona Apple: Singer and songwriter Fiona Apple became anorexic after being raped outside of her mother's home at the age of twelve. She says she was not anorexic out of a desire to be thin, but as a reaction to being raped. She also admitted to having self-injurious behaviors in the past.

The Barbie Twins: Pinup and model sisters Sia and Shane Barbi - known as the Barbi Twins - battled anorexia and bulimia. The sisters have written a book about their struggles with an eating disorder (Barbie Twins - Dying To Be Healthy: Millennium Dieting and Nutrition) and are touring through schools and colleges, raising eating disorder awareness.

Victoria Beckham: Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice from the Spice Girls) publicly admitted struggling with an eating disorder in the early days of the Spice Girls, after years "in denial". "I was very obsessed. I mean, I could tell you the fat content and the calorie content in absolutely anything," she told ABC's 20/20 in 2003. While being a Spice Girl, Victoria was under a lot of pressure from the management to lose weight and stay slim. Beckham also said that bandmate Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) encouraged her and Melanie C (Sporty Spice) to do sports and take liquid meal substitutes. Victoria eventually started to binge eat and in one passage from her autobiography she describes eating 10 bowls of cereals at once. In her book "Learning To Fly", which also contains a lot of pictures of the star, Victoria talks about her obsession with her appearance and describes her illness.

Kate Beckinsale: Actress Kate Beckinsale struggled with an eating disorder during her teen years, before she decided to start acting. She has frankly spoken in interviews about her eating problem. Thanks to the support of her family and therapy Kate was able to recover from anorexia. "People keep asking me about it but I don't want to be famous for being a former anorexic."

Melanie Chisholm: Singer Melanie Chisholm (Melanie C - former Sporty Spice from the Spice Girls) publicly admitted suffering from an eating disorder and depression. Throughout the time she was in the "Spice Girls", Melanie alternated between starving herself and excessive exercise. "My mum assumed my tiny body was a result of being busy with the band and working out regularly."

Kelly Clarkson: The 'American Idol' winner struggled with bulimia for six months until friends discovered her secret and begged her to get help.

Diana, Princess of Wales: Princess Diana struggled with an eating disorder and also admitted that she used to self-harm herself. The following is an extract of an interview of Princess Diana about her battle with bulimia - "I had bulimia for a number of years. And that's like a secret disease. You inflict it upon yourself because your self-esteem is at a low ebb, and you don't think you're worthy or valuable. You fill your stomach up four or five times a day - some do it more - and it gives you a feeling of comfort. It's like having a pair of arms around you, but it's temporarily, temporary. Then you're disgusted at the bloatedness of your stomach, and then you bring it all up again. And it's a repetitive pattern, which is very destructive to yourself." Diana also admitted in a television interview that she intentionally cut her arms and legs and had thrown herself down a flight of stairs on more than one occasion.

Calista Flockhart: Actress Calista Flockhart admitted after years of being in denial that she struggled with anorexia while filming the TV show 'Ally Mc Beal'. "I started under-eating, over-exercising, pushing myself too hard and brutalizing my immune system."

Jane Fonda: Award-winning actress Jane Fonda revealed several years ago that she had been a secret bulimic from age 12, and struggled with anorexia and bulimia for 30 years. Jane became one of the first Hollywood actresses to break the silence and talk openly about eating disorders and campaigned to raise awareness about anorexia and bulimia. In her autobiography "My Life So Far", Jane honestly talks about her 30 year battle with eating disorders.

Geri Halliwell: Singer Geri Halliwell (former Ginger Spice from the Spice Girls) publicly admitted suffering from bulimia and binge eating for several years. "I realized I couldn't control this monster anymore. I needed to find help." Her piece of advice for those who are struggling - "I can honestly tell you from personal experience, that worrying about an eating disorder really can get you down. There's nothing to be ashamed about. You'll be amazed at the difference it'll make to your whole life if you tell someone you trust. There are lots of people who want to help and you really CAN'T fight this one on your own. It might be a hard decision to make, to tell people and to seek help but, trust me it's nowhere as hard as trying to deal with it on your own." Geri has written a book called "Just For The Record" in which she talks with brutal honesty about her life, including battling and overcoming eating disorders, which she has struggled with since childhood.

Alanis Morissette: Canadian singer Alanis Morissette has admitted that she has struggled with anorexia and bulimia between the ages of 14 and 18 when she was trying to break into the music business. Mary-Kate Olsen: Actress Mary-Kate Olsen ('The Olsen Twins') checked into an eating disorder treatment center and underwent treatment for anorexia after months of speculation and rumors about her thin appearance and denying of being anorexic. Sharon Osbourne: (married to Ozzy Osbourne), who has survived deadly colon cancer in the past, has confessed she has been suffering from bulimia for 35 years and she is still struggling. "I've been able to conquer just about everything except bulimia." Sharon had gastric bypass surgery but still battles with her eating disorder.

Why Women Aspire to Be Super Skinny

And Why it Might Not All Be the Media's Fault

Women have always wanted to be skinny, pretty much from the beginning of time. Of course it would be easy enough to blame the media for smearing their pages with super skinny models, but the fact is even if you took all that away, women would still be trying to slim down. Many people have developed serious medical conditions by trying to starve themselves down to a smaller size. Others try to over exercise, under eat, and then they end up wondering why they are not healthier for slimming down. Yes, in this country we have a serious problem with obesity, but that darker side to weight loss is always there. Now many women use the excuse that men are to blame for this thin epidemic. As much as I love playing the blame game, we sometimes forget that we make our own health decisions. When people do this they will point out those men, want their women to look like those models in the magazines. In recent surveys, we have now learned that men would actually like their women to be a healthier weight, then to thin. Think about it when was the last time you saw a man looking at another man's body and saying wow, you look thin today! That is because men and women are different when they come to look at themselves in the mirror. As a woman, I know that we compare ourselves to other women as if it is a contest. We are not trying to do this for men we are doing this to beat other women. This is where the skinny factor comes in to play; we want to be the best we can be. It does not matter who is what size on a runway in France what matters is if we look better then the other women around us. We cannot put full blame on the media or on the members of the opposite sex any longer, we need to take responsibility for our own weight. If a man cannot accept you at a healthy weight then he is not even worth your time. Yes people are vain, but we do this to ourselves it does not matter if we want to or not. So I urge you to stop trying to be the next sob story on television and take care of yourself. True change only comes when people are willing to change themselves.

Can Your Friends Make You Fat or Skinny?

We are most likely to become obese when a friend becomes obese, increasing our chances of obesity by 57%. The ultimate influence is that between mutual close friends. If our friend becomes obese this increases our chances of obesity by 171% - nearly doubling the risk!
Even if hundreds of miles separate friends, this effect remains. Friends and siblings of the same sex appear to have a greater influence on weight gain/ loss than those of the opposite sex. We are more influenced by those who resemble us. Weight gain or weight loss in family members had a smaller effect compared to the influence of friends. Weight gain or weight loss in neighbours had no effect. Although the general trend in the study was that most people were gaining weight - resulting in an obesity epidemic - the same effect was observed for weight loss.

Reason?

If we identify a person as our friend, we hold that person in high regard, which in turn can affect our view of what we consider normal or acceptable. The study suggests that the ‘spreading’ of obesity has less to do with the imitation of our friend’s behaviour and more to do with a change in our perception of what we consider to be the social norm in terms of how acceptable we regard obesity. Thus, when we observe our friends gaining weight, weight gain may become more acceptable in ourselves.

Weight Loss?

The obvious take-home message seems to be to avoid making or having fat friends. However, since weight loss can be equally ‘caught’ as weight gain, focusing on what your skinny friends are doing (or making friends with slim people) could provide an answer to many peoples weight loss conundrums.

So, has a new trend been set in motion? Size-stalking?

Size-Stalking: Find your slimmest friend, one who is trim, healthy and looks great on the beach. This is vital, since there are many ‘skinny’ people out there who are wobbly under their protective layer of clothes. Make sure you share similar body types. There is no point copying someone who is anectomorph (ultra-fast metabolism) and eating thousands of calories a day, when you are an endomorph (sluggish metabolism) and get fat by simply looking at a burger.
Make sure your friend does not have an eating disorder. The aim is to learn how the skinny get and stay skinny - healthily. It is possible. Use common sense. Ask your friend if you can do this. The most likely scenario is that they will be flattered and want to help. When size-stalking your skinny friend, take note of points such as:

What’s in your friend’s fridge and kitchen cupboards?
What kind of foods does your friend eat for breakfast/ lunch/ dinner?
What does your friend snack on? This is important, since many people drop the ball when it comes to snacking.
Does your friend make his or her own pack lunch?
Where does your friend eat and what does he or she order when going out?
How/ where does your friend workout? How often? What classes? What is their technique? Have you got the right gear?
How hard does your friend workout? Compare it to what you have done previously: Were you really working out or simply watching TV or reading (this will always be a mystery), while on the treadmill?

Attitude

Most importantly, learn about your friend’s mindset/ attitude. Do you spend the same amount of time it would have taken to complete your workout, trying to get out of it?
What makes your friend refrain from eating that slice of chocolate cake?
Why is he or she so driven during their workout?
What do they say to themselves to get through a gruelling 5 mile run?
If you can successfully copy your friend’s attitude, chances are that you will successfully lose weight.

My 6-week journey to the land of thin

What does it take for a normal woman to achieve size zero? In this graphic account of extreme dieting, Kate Spicer reveals the revolting cost

A fascination with being thin is a defining part of this rapidly fattening age and nothing exemplifies it better than the recent tumult in fashion and the media over the size zero physique. A size zero is officially 31½-23-34 — little-boy statistics that can be applied to some of the biggest red carpet names of the day. But the term doesn’t bring to mind vital statistics; it has come to represent a state of slenderness and richness that to most normal eyes looks like skin, bone, expensive hair and lovely clothes.
Personally I don’t care too much about the debate in fashion. Models have always been thin and while some have issues, generally the model’s body is an extraordinary one: they are a gangly slender breed unto themselves. More fascinating — and alarming — are the lengths other women will go to physically and mentally to keep themselves well under their natural body weight; and the extent to which most of them think their natural weight is essentially fat.
I am never quite satisfied with my body, but aside from largely healthy eating and regular exercise I can’t be bothered to do much more about it. However, when I was challenged to make a documentary about what it takes to attain the distinctive anticurves of the size zero, I said yes.
These are the lowlights of my descent into starvation.

Week one

Am nicely fit, but a wee bit porky (just over 10 stone) after two weeks enjoying death by cheese and ham skiing in France over Christmas. I face the new year with the understanding that the next few weeks are going to be miserable. I will follow a lifestyle that, for example, an actress or singer might adopt were they getting ready for a red carpet event or a video shoot.
First up, the tried and tested master cleanse diet, a concoction of lemons, cayenne pepper, maple syrup and spring water, used most famously recently by Beyoncé to lose 20lb in 14 days.

Buy all the stuff and go home to make up fiery, sweet, sour filth that will be my sole nourishment. Within two days I know I cannot live on this stuff while working. Am agitated, bored — so bored — and have a feeble attention span. My legs might still look sturdy, but they struggle to climb stairs and my head is light as a feather. At times I woozily weave rather than walk.

Leaving the steam room one evening after an ultra-short session at the gym (must keep my metabolism up so that I continue to burn calories at a normal rate and not at a slow starvation rate), I pass out and fall against the wall. A woman props me up. “Sorry, I’m not eating much,” I say in a dizzy haze. She looks daggers: “Well stay out of the gym then, you are a danger to more than yourself.”

I get home and try hard to focus on my ambition to have an x-ray-like body. I try to enjoy the sensation of hunger, something I have heard women in the public eye say and have also read on anorexia forums on the internet. Enjoying hunger is not nourishing for me, and I eat 10 raisins, 10 nuts and a tablespoon of maple syrup feeling weak-willed and guilty. I am going generally nuts.

Appropriately I start eating about 500 calories of nuts a day because my job is impossible to do on the lemonade alone. My attention span improves — a bit. The master cleanse book recommends doing the diet for a minimum of 10 days and a maximum of 40, a state of affairs I find unimaginable.

Already I enjoy the feeling of emptiness in my body and every morning I encourage more emptiness by drinking two pints of salty water to cleanse my bowel. The effect is explosive. Obviously this isn’t healthy. I am also smoking a lot more.

So apart from making friends with all the people in the smoking room at work my social life has taken a nose-dive. I turn up to dinners after everyone has eaten; drink water, smoke, and go home exhausted by midnight. Call this life? However, a surprising number of women, when I tell them why I am not eating, say they have done the diet too and a strange sort of kinship over suffering is shared. Crazily it seems I am not alone.

Week two

Haven’t seen my mum or granny for months. Mum asks me when I am coming down. I tell her I won’t be coming home until this is over. Life in Devon revolves around physical exertions and big noisy wine-fuelled meals finished off with sticky nursery puddings. On this diet my happiest place is tucked up in bed alone, stomach grinding with hunger, wrapped round a hot water bottle (I am always cold) with some prescription-strength sleeping pills.

I have to fly to Miami to interview a Hollywood skinny. I cannot take fluids on the plane, so no lemonade. I survive the 12-hour flight on a small bag of nuts and some orange juice.
On arrival I go direct to the hotel to do the interview. I am now beside myself with hunger — I feel like I am floating — and am chain-smoking to try and get my wits together. While I wait for the actress at the hotel I eat some ham and raw vegetables. I try to talk to the Hollywood skinny about weight issues; she goes off the wall. Touchy!

After the interview I go for dinner and am so debilitated that I eat a small tuna tartare and have two glasses of wine. Then I crack — that’s the wine — and order some coconut cake. After a few mouthfuls I become hyper, like a kid after too many sweeties, rambling excitedly about how sugar acts on the same neural pathways as cocaine. Everyone stares — I am on a sugar high. My cheeks are flushed and my speech is speedy. I feel happy.

The next day I get up and run for an hour and feel really fat. The truth is, the more weight I lose, the fatter I feel and the more I want to lose weight. I lie in bed in the mornings feeling my hipbones and wanting to feel them more. I want them to jut out.

When an old friend asks me how I am getting on I grumble about how stupid it all is and say how sorry I feel for women who live out their lives in this state of privation. She’s cynical. “I think you’re enjoying this,” she says, knowing me better than myself at times. I secretly agree with her.

Week three

My boobs and arse are flat as pancakes, though the former specifically look awful. During the diet a male friend grabbed my bum and said “Yuck” because it was so lifelessly flat. When I get back to the UK I have to go for my weekly weigh-in and check-up with Dr Le Roux, the metabolic physician at Imperial College London who is managing my health. The weekend in Miami has screwed up my extreme diet.

The thought that I may have put on weight is stressing me out. Obsessive dieters need routine, or a personal chef with them at all times. I feel bloated and guilty. My mind is warped and I have arrived at planet thin where all that really matters — forget art, literature, intelligence, love, family, career — is getting thinner. I am food phobic and can’t stop thinking about sex. A girl needs some kind of sensory pleasure in life, and sex and smoking are the only ones left.

What a strange life, thinking about food all the time but eating none. And when I do, such guilt. I buy some laxatives, which is stupid given that I go straight from Heathrow to a detox retreat in Kettering where I will have daily colonics and consume nothing apart from fruit juice. But then I am becoming very stupid.

The laxatives give me cramps and I arrive at the Homefield Grange retreat tired, agitated and in pain. For the next five days I will have regular enemas. I also — against the wishes of the supervisor there — force myself to train twice a day, a normal activity for the weight-loss obsessive. I ignore almost all phone calls, even from close family and friends. I cannot concentrate on books so, in between the training and the colonics, I watch garbage television and read trashy magazines by day and long into the night because the hunger keeps me awake.
But when Dr Le Roux weighs me and I’ve lost more than a stone in three weeks, all that weirdness and suffering turns to elation. I love my increasing slimness. You can wear anything you want, you look great in photos; put on heels and your legs look like something out of a fashion magazine. I feel a peculiar sense of power and control, and an air of aloof removal from other women.

Against my sisterly instincts I have started judging other women’s bodies against my own, ruthlessly, from their ankles to their chins, which is clearly menacing. But as my entire life has been seized by this body-driven self-validation it doesn’t bother my conscience as it should.
Nothing much great is happening anywhere else in my life: my work output is intermittent as I can’t concentrate, socially everything is a drag, family life is a nono. My biggest excitements are the steam room at the gym, smoking and of course shopping — fashion is made for women of my physical proportions.

No fear that I frequently feel on the verge of tears. Not to worry that meeting men is harder without a drink in your hand, because if I keep this up I’ll be a trophy-wife weight, I’ll be the sort of thin that a certain type of man likes to buy into as he would a flash car. And with the obsessive shopping and debilitated mental capacities for intellectual combat, I’ll fit the brief perfectly.

I am suckered into the miserably compromised life of the artificially skinny. Yes, it’s a pain in my nonexistent arse not eating much. It requires a lot of concentration and you need to disconnect from certain bonding activities, specifically conversation, drinking and eating.

Week four

Stupidly, on my weekly visit to Dr Le Roux, I tell him about the laxatives and he immediately sends me to a psychiatrist. After a cold hour of being grilled, the psychiatrist says I have the potential to develop bulimia and I am told to start eating normally.

I am beside myself with anger. I have left work now and for the final month had planned to dedicate myself to getting down to a revoltingly thin state. Partly to see the experiment through; partly because this was something I really wanted to do. I wanted to know what it felt like to be as thin as a properly thin person. It’s true that the anorexic state is a cry for help — am I participating in this specific psychopathology? Too right.

With not much work to do I could really concentrate. I had found a personal trainer to help me find that rail-like state. I would train hard twice a day while eating only 1,500 calories, I’d sleep in clingfilm, sweating like mad. He planned to train me as you would a boxer or a jockey getting ready for competition. And in between all I’d do is sleep. But instead I am told to “eat normally”.

Week five

Eating normally? Forget it. My mind is not my own any more and what follows is up there with the worst weeks of my life. I have to go to the Alps for work. The story isn’t going well and I’m stressed. Under stress, when I need to write, I often eat. It’s not cool,I don’t like it, but I do. I am terrified and confused. My body is hungry, but I am continuing to try and control my eating. The consequence of this is bingeing. I binge and then stick my fingers down my throat — twice. Is ita shrink-fulfilling prophecy? All I want is to be thin. I am unhappy.

I go back to Homefield Grange with two friends for the weekend, raving about its weight-loss benefits. I tell them matter of factly about the bingeing and purging, thinking that this is normal. When they both express shock, I feel a sense of isolation and shame. Their shock makes me realise quite how silly things have become.

And it is totally within my power to sort my head out, but I don’t want to. Dealing with it will mean putting on weight. We flick through Heat, The People, Hello!. There is no diversion from slim women, including Nicole Richie, being presented as successful who are clearly living their lives in the ravages of eating disorders. I spend the rest of the weekend reading books about eating disorders. My intellect is starting to fight back against my misguided, hunger-fuelled, bizarre idea of vanity.

Week six

I want my eating to return to normal. Bingeing is distressing to mind, body and soul. And as soon as my eating becomes more normal my human relationships become simpler, and I steadily feel happier and calmer. Nonethe-less I feel a failure and I still think my legs look chubby. I weigh about 9 stone. Most of the thin girls in gossip rags are probably 8 stone or less.
Even though my head was a mess my female friends all thought I looked great when I was at my thinnest. The cult of thin is a powerful one and, truth be told, if I didn’t have to workI could imagine almost enjoying getting into it. In certain pockets of society everyone thinks natural body weight is fat. If you are a perfectionist, as I and many other marginally successful women are, you fit the psychopathology brief for eating disorders. At the weekly weigh-ins with Dr Le Roux, I made him put a piece of card on the scales so that I didn’t obsess about numbers. What I went through is all too familiar to him.

The pursuit of thinness is a way of channelling every emotional energy into one ambition; it is a way of losing yourself in one problem — weight loss — and ignoring all the other issues in your life. Almost all women want to be thinner. When a woman feels low, or challenged by life, sometimes any excess flesh feels literally like the embodiment of their perceived weakness. Control around food is seen asa sign of intelligence and restraint. It’sa seductive and all-consuming addiction when the figures on the scales are a simple, if nutty, method of measuring your success as a human being.
