It's that time of the year once again for the Australian brony community.

This year's PonyconAU is being held on Queensland's Gold Coast or Seaponies Paradise as it's known.

But, as with the case with last year I won't be able to attend this year's convention. I was planning to attend last year's event in Marebourne but my grandma passed away a week before the event.

Normally I wouldn't bring things such as my personal life up, but to be honest with you I've been a bit bummed out and a tad depressed of being able to attend.

For those who are attending the convention, have a great time, don't get into too much mischief or grief (e.g. flying over tables) and enjoy the event!

One day.....one day my time will come.

2014: Year in Review

2014 unlike previous years was a year full of a mixed bag. This year has not only been a big one for me both physically and mentally but also emotionally and personally.

The year itself saw changes to my life that I have been planning for some time while others came unexpected and without warning.

With that said, let's recap the year that was.

Cecilia Comes Full Circle

For the last couple of years, I have had a female side known as Cecilia. During the last twelve months the journey to become a female through my "Pathways" project took a turn for the better.

On the 2nd April I officially came out as a male to female transgender. It wasn't the most easist of decisions to make due to a fear of my parents retailiating and the possibility of being banished and thrown out of the family. I've always had this feeling of being in the wrong gender, so to finally get this off my chest was a huge relief.

The next year for me will be all about slowly phasing in Cecilia into everyday life and also changing my clothing preferences and style to match. There will be still some restrictions due to being under the parents roof, but I am planning to finally live the life I want to live.

As always, here is a selection of Cecilia throughout the last 12 months:

Three Years as a Brony

2014 marked my third year in the brony fandom and the majority of the year was focused around the fourth season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I watched the entire season live as it aired, even it meant having to stay up until 2:00 in the morning (later 1:00 and midnight) or having to stay in one spot trying to watch the "Bats" episode on my phone due to the Optus network being overloaded while in Queensland.

This year also saw new additions to the merch collection including five new pony plushies and a complete set of Equestria Girls dolls.

With every positive bit of news also comes with a huge negative. I planned to attend my first brony convention this year but was stopped by my parents a few months before the event. Luckily the event was cancelled, but I couldn't also attend the spinoff events and pretty much blew my chance to meet one of the character voice actors in person.

I never mentioned about this in the public eye before but I suffered a huge bout of depression when the spinoff events happened and pretty much spent the entire weekend lying on the bed and in tears. No joke. I still even get those feelings today when I read over the posts I made.

Goodbye Grandma (Bernie)

I thought I save this bit for last as this is the most difficult subject to talk about.

In January of this year I lost a very close family member in the form of my grandma who suddenly passed away from a lengthy and unexpected illness and marked the third death in the family in five years.

In Conclusion

As I mentioned at the start of this post, 2014 was a year that delivered a mixed bag. Overall this year was a 50/50 for me for many reasons but the positives outweighed the negatives in terms on how my year was.

2015 is shaping up to be a year full of change and exciting opportunites including working on my moving out plans a little more and to also take the next step into my transition journey.

I want to thank you for all your support throughout 2014 and wish you the best in 2015.

Three Years On: It Is Still Cult Viewing

The first year was the hardest part. I kept on seeing things for My Little Pony in my YouTube activity feed and paid no attention to it. I didn't have any intention of seeing what this was all about.

But as time moved on, it become more and more common. I couldn't escape it any longer.

Today marks three years since I discovered the cult classic show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and officially became part of the brony community.

On a cold November night back in 2011 with five episodes of the second season of the Friendship is Magic already aired, my curiosity prevailed and I saw a YouTube Poop video from cs188 with a title which I can't repeat due to it's content. From that one video, I spent a whole night watching kyrospawn's 6 to 10 second clips of the show and the rest as they say is history.

As mentioned in my initial post (link) and in the anniversary posts (link & link) a lot has happened since that November night three years ago. During the last twelve months, we saw the fourth season of Friendship is Magic (plus a few late nights/early mornings) and the introduction of Equestria Girls and it's sequel Rainbow Rocks taking off in a big way.

For me the main point that sticks out for me during the last year in the fandom was my confidence to buy pony merch from a retail store now crossing over to my new transgender life after making the announcement back in April to transition into a female. (e.g. buying makeup, stockings etc)

I'll talk about the progress of the transition in a later blog post but I still wonder if my decision to become a brony was the first stepping stone to making that choice to finally become who I truly am.

Apart from that and despite not being not as active in the fandom as I used to, I am still proud to be a part of this great community.

Shine Like Rainbows! (Rainbow Rocks - Part 2) SPOILER WARNING

Speaking of video games, I've always thought that Rainbow Dash would be good at some of the sport titles such as FIFA or Pro Evolution Soccer/Winning Eleven due to her love of the game. Heck, anypony would be keen for a online match against her and it would make for some interesting and exciting action...as long as I play as the Western Sydney Wanderers though and have the difficulty on Semi-Pro!

Away from the video games for just a tick, another scene that I enjoyed was Twilight and Sunset chatting away in the middle of the night about their lives and the responsibilites that they have. I thought this was a nice touch and it showed more of the mutual respect between these two.

That wasn't the only thing that happened. Maud Pie even dropped by and gave Sunset quite a fright!

Maud had to feed Boulder though and in her unique style, she did. Apart from a huge mess on the floor.

Which brings me to ask this question:

How in the world can Maud, pony or human carry Boulder around and yet not be picked on or bullied? Brave girl! #RainbowRocks

As mentioned in my Maud Pie post a few months back, it takes a lot of courage and determination for Maud to carry a pet rock around and yet not be subject to ridicule, bullying or being picked on. She was brave enough to do it in the pony world and she has shown the same thing here in the human world as well.

You should be proud of yourself Maud.

Back to the Battle.....or not

Back to the Battle of the Bands? Well not just yet.

I had to completely turn the volume down when Twilight first sang in the human world because it was...... well not up to scratch. What happened?

Yeah, that's what I want to know. How did Twilight go from being such a good singer in Equestria to pretty much almost smashing out the windows at Sweet Apple Acres in the human world? What happened to the musical numbers that she sang so well and even caused tears to fall? Why didn't that get carried over?

So since arriving back at Canterlot High, Twilight has had her heart ripped out by Flash and now she cannot sing even to save her life or even to break the Dazzlings spell. Uh oh...

*shutters at the thought of Spike's performance at the Equestria Games*

The Final Battle

So after winging it two performances, a huge amount of infighting backstage and being booed off, the Rainbooms make it to the grand final performance against the Dazzlings.

But as with everything that has happened so far....the spanner had to be thrown in:

Trixie decides to throw her good hard work away and traps the Rainbooms down the bottom of the stage.

I mean, come on Trix! You threw away your babyface status after fighting in two Magic Duel battles and making up with Twilight. There has to be a better way surely then trapping people!

Anyway, as the Dazzlings did their final performance Spike and Vinyl Scratch got the Rainbooms out and the stage is set for the last hurrah. What unfolded was a musical battle that had a lot of hearts racing and a lot of cheering happening at the same time.

Twilight finally got the singing part down, but Sunset Shimmer decided to finally do the 360 degree turn to cement her place and with a bit of singing...

So that was it. Game, set and match. The magic necklaces broken, the Dazzlings defeated. Their harmony singing voices taken away from them. They couldn't even sing at all, with the exception of Sonata who I felt for at the end:

Indeed. Why did Sonata have to lose her singing voice? The adorable personality? All of it gone.

She had the fullest potential to be reformed and actually still does deserve a second chance. As mentioned before, I believe that some people (especially vilians) can be reformed and their powers used for the world of good instead of evil. Sonata could have told Adagio and Aria to pretty much screw it and go rogue, but alas it wasn't to be....

In Conclusion

At the end of it all, there was one sentence to sum it all up. I was not disappointed!

I really got into the film and actually enjoyed watching it as well as posting my live reactions on Twitter. It was the next best thing to being at the cinema and seeing the film in person.

I was a bit peeved about the cuts made to the film for the TV premiere, but I would have loved to seen that scene in higher quality. But alas, you can't win them all.

If you haven't had a chance to see the film yet, do so! I don't care what method you use, even if it's to piss off the Hollywood big wigs or telling the government to....well I'll let you decide what to say to them.

Shake Your Tail! (Rainbow Rocks - Part 1) SPOILER WARNING

At the end of the first film, Sunset Shimmer was in tears. I can't stress that point enough. I was a tad weepy myself when I saw the tears in her eyes and being apologetic for what she done.

To quote from my post on the Bronies Australia forums:

"I always believe after seeing a film or TV show that a villain can sometimes be reformed if the chance comes up, and after seeing her like that, I think there might be a possibility (fan made or show canon) for Sunset to start showing her good side, whether it would be in either human or pony form."

A year goes by and the first scene in the movie shows exactly what I hoped for right from the end of the first film.

Sunset Shimmer is on the road to being reformed.

We see her wanting to help out in painting the banners and even socalising with her new friends. This scene really captures her road to being on the good side and the huge leap in progress since the night at the Fall Formal.

Okay, while she is feeling good about her new life some of the students at Canterlot High are still lets say....a little angry about that night and still haven't forgiven Sunset for what she did.

The Dazzlings

As with any film, you gotta have a couple of villains to shake up and cause some trouble. Enter the Dazzlings.

On the outside they seem to be a good bunch of girls just wanting to fit in to life at CHS.

But...things aren't what they seem.

You see...without giving much away, the Dazzlings are actually not from this world. They sing beautifully as a trio but something is not right with them. This would become true later in the film...

Sonata Dusk: Adorability & Cuteness Rolled into a Single Package

Despite the Jekil and Hyde personality of the Dazzlings, one of the the girls named Sonata Dusk has become quite a fan favourite since the cinema release of the film.

Like Coco Pommel and Maud Pie, Sonata has a certain quirk about her that gives fans something to cheer about.

Is it her personality? Is it her cute style? Or is it something else?

I don't have an exact answer for you, but let's say if you are starting a meme such as:

That is well and for sure bound to get some attention. Heck, even the Australian arm of General Mills who distribute the Old El Paso brand here could do with some sponsorship endorcement:

Sonata has made in my opinion a huge impact since the movie was released. Fans love her to bits for crying out loud! Could she be a candidate for a character to go from villian to being reformed like Sunset?

I'll go into more detail on that later in this post.

Twilight is Back!

When there is trouble in Canterlot High, the Rainbooms call upon Twilight Sparkle from Equestria to come and save the day!

One problem though...the portal has been closed for over a year.

But that isn't a problem for Twilight! Just add a few hints of Doc Brown's time machine, modify it for inter dimentional travel, charge it up to 1.21 gigawatts and then it's back through the portal!

This scene saw my inner 1980's self go and run wild with Back to the Future references a plenty, even suggesting....

Or for better results Twilight, borrow Doc Brown’s DeLorian, drive that thing at 88mph and travel between worlds in style! #RainbowRocks

...but I highly doubt that Marty and Doc would be appreciate having to file the insurance claim as a result of the car hitting the building or even breaking the portal. That would also mean Twilight would be stuck in Canterlot High for good.

Speaking of Twilight Sparkle in general, seeing her back in the human form for the second time was amazing to say the least and for Sunset Shimmer and Twilight to make up for the past and also show mutual respect for each other was a highlight for me.

Battle of the Bands...and it nearly ends in tears

So.....what originally was a musical showcase suddenly turns into a battle of the bands. A knock down, drag out elmination style competition to see who is really the best at Canterlot High. Unplanned. Unscripted and Uncensored. Anything goes and you do anything to win.

You've got your rap artist acts such as Snips and Snails, Octavia and her cello, the Dazzlings and the newly formed band known as the Rainbooms competing for the title.

But what turns out to be a friendly competition, decides to spill over to the hallway and Twilight Sparkle and Flash Sentry bump into each other.

Instead of a friendly chat and a hug like in the past, Flash decides to become nasty towards Twilight and decides to totally ignore her at first.

What happened afterwards...

I was pretty much angry at how Flash treated Twilight in that manner. Ok, I may end up getting blasted to the moon and back for this, but that is no way to speak to someone like that. Calling Twilight annoying also doesn't help either Flash.

Twilight, who is now in shock and on the verge of tears decides to do the unthinkable.

Tears start forming in her eyes and she starts crying.

This scene really got the "feels" going for me and I actually felt for Twilight as Flash decided to throw her heart on the floor. We've seen Twilight cry as a pony but never as a human and this scene really gave a new dimention to Twilight in experiencing emotion.

However...this wasn't shown in the TV broadcast for some odd reason. That's right. This was cut out of the broadcast.

I was actually looking forward to seeing that scene in high quality. I am not complaining, but it would have been nice to see that scene in this version as it would have generated a wave of emotional reactions.

A Rural Bronies Life (Rant Retrospective)

It's Saturday morning and I'm here looking outside my bedroom window, with the scenery of gumtrees, native bushland and the only green patch of grass down on the septic tank area. Birds of all kinds fly past and nest in the trees, the odd kangaroo drops by on the land and wombats are a plenty.

All the while, the sun shines down from the hills of the Goulburn Mulwaree and with the peace and quiet and without having to deal with noisy neighbours or troubled youth, to be honest it is actually a good place to live for those who want to get away from it all.

For me, I have been living in this part of the region for ten years this August and since that time a whole lot has changed in terms of the world and the technically connected environment that we now take for granted.

In 2011, my life changed when I discovered the reboot of My Little Pony.

Since then, my bedroom has been decked out in pony merchandise including countless plushie commissions that I paid for out of my own hard work and savings. What started with a four pack of blind bag figurines from eBay now has grown into a collection that I am proud to call my own.

But while living in the sticks and being part of the brony fandom as they say is nice and dandy, there are some challenges that I have to deal with on a day to day basis.

Issues such as living under your parents roof and forbidden to move out until 2016, being shot down and told in a stern no that you can't attend a convention in Sydney and also blowing chances to attend or even host brony meetups due to the isolation on where you live and public transport being very limited in choice.

This is me at the moment. Forbidden to move out of home, banned from attending a convention of any sort due to one of your parents worried sick about the venue's location and also knowing that I can't get my drivers licence at all due to my disability affecting my co-ordination and judgement skills on the road.

I have to rely on public transport to get from point A to point B. Train services are very limited out where I live and the local bus service only runs on weekdays. So getting to any kind of event is hard and not being able to drive at all only makes it worse.

Every time I hear about a convention or meetup happening, I slip into a temporary depressed state knowing that I won't be able to attend at all. Another chance of wanting to meet other people who have the same interests is gone. Not being able to meet and even get an autograph or a piece of merch signed by the special guests, whether they would be show staff or even the voice actors or actresses is also out the window.

Being able to soak in the atmosphere of the event is also out of the question for me.

Instead I sigh sadly and even shed a tear knowing that I may never, ever in my life be able to attend any event at all. The pictures and tweets of the events also make me upset knowing that I couldn't be there in person and to live the moment with hundreds or even thousands of people.

I have said this before in the past, living in a rural area and being part of this great fandom is not an easy one to live. There are others who might say that it isn't, but for me, knowing that you may never attend a brony meetup or even a convention in your life will still linger and haunt me until the day they put me into the ground.

I wish there was a way, even if it involved convention or meetup organisers to bring the con experience to the people of rural and regional areas without having to travel or deal with challenges of life, even it means holding satellite meets (not with the dish, but community events instead) so that the people who live in these rural and regional areas finally get a chance to meet the very people who made their lives better? Even it was for a day or two before the convention and held in a community hall or even a notable place in the town or area, many lives would be made a bit brighter if they brought the convention experience to those areas.

But as they would say, one can only dream I suppose. Just another idea on the scrap pile that wouldn't be noticed.

The Grand Final (Twilight's Kingdom)

"This is it. The season 4 finale. Known in other terms as The Grand Final. The Final Whistle. The Curtain Call, and One Last Shindig. After 24 of the best episodes that this season has to offer, it all comes down to this one hour. Will the finale episodes change the course of MLP history forever?"

The Grand Final. Although commonly used to describe that one day in the sporting calendar as the penultimate event to end the season has it's other uses.

It is also used to describe the end of the season for one of the greatest seasons in My Little Pony history.

You can talk about the night Shining Armor and Princess Cadance tied the knot or when Celestia brought many a fan to their knees and openly wept during her song. But if there has to be one moment in time and one moment in history that fans young and old will remember for a long time until they are put into the ground, it has to be the season four grand final, titled Twilight's Kingdom.

Twilight Sparkle. Adorkability Redefined

Let me ask you a question:

Raise your hoof if you, at any stage hated or didn't want to know Twilight Sparkle when you first started watching the show?

I know I have, and I can proudly admit that yes I hated a pony because she was annoying. However with the sands of time, things and perspectives on ponies change and Twilight has come a very long way to where she is today even if it mean't giving her a virtual hug or two and drying her tears when things looked down and out.

This episode brought out the best in Twilight Sparkle, despite a few bumps in the road at the start. If you didn't feel for her during the entire hour and the challenges that she faced including losing her Ponyville home and having to deal with obstacles and challenges along the way, then you might need to be checked out straight away for emotions.

One Final Song (or Two)

It is no surprise that this season has had it's fair share of song numbers and the team of Daniel Ingram and Steffan Andrews have written and composed each one alongside the production team with perfection and careful skill.

Although the grand final had two songs, you couldn't help but...

The tears flowed once again like they did in the season three finale with the song number titled "You'll Play Your Part". A musical number involving Twilight singing her frustrations about being a princess and the challenges that she has to face.

But it wasn't all about Twilight though, as all three princesses (plus Twilight) singing ended up being a huge deal, especially when Luna sung a few lines sending the fandom into a wave of excitement. In the end though, the song brought many a fan to tears once more and even left a smile on my face.

Bravo. Enough said.

30 Years in the Void, Unleashed to the World

The season four grand final also marked the 30th anniversary since the original My Little Pony TV special titled "Rescue from Midnight Castle" debuted to the world.

So it made perfect sense to bring back a villain from that very first special.

You can talk about Discord and the countless televisions that were thrown out the window in anger after turning the mane 6 against themselves. You can talk about Queen Chrysalis and the changelings before feeling sad and heartfelt for her afterwards when the backstory of her past was documented in the Hellfire fan comic. Heck, let King Sombra have a mention or two despite being a one shot villain who was defeated easily.

But if you want to know what the term of a badass villain who doesn't give a toss about anypony or their abilities, then you there is one name that strikes fear into the hearts of ponies worldwide...

Tirek.

That's right. The leanest, toughest son of a bitch villain who doesn't care for anyone but himself after a 30 year stint in a inter dimensional institution after being cleaned up by the original Mane 6 decided it was time to break out and start the road of chaos once more.

Discord? Turning Heel?

Now, let me take a page from the book of Derryn "The Human Headline" Hinch and bring this section in his style.

You helped Tirek suck the life out of ponies, took their wings away from the pegasi and made them feel hopeless for the future.

Shame Tirek Shame! Discord, you don't get away that easily as well. Shame on you as well for joining up with him in the first place!

The Golden Oaks Library is no more. Gone, destroyed, insurance company denied the claim for repairs. A total write off.

Twilight, Spike and Owlowiscious are left homeless.

So what is a pony to do in times like this? Cry her eyes out at the loss?

Or does she get the final key to the chest and unloads a can of whoopass on Tirek?

Twilight Sparkle now takes centre stage and decides to take Tirek on one on one in the final fight scene that I consider one of the most exciting scenes that I have ever witnessed in my life. Nothing was spared, even a sacrifice of Twilight's magical power to get the final key wasn't enough for Tirek to prevail.

When the last key was obtained, the mane 6 evolved once more to form the power that will now live in our memories forever:

After the final siren sounded in the minds of the fans, it was all over. After 26 episodes of one of the most exciting and tense season that the My Little Pony franchise has ever produced, season four went out with a big bang like it was promised to do. You couldn't have scripted that finale any different.

With that, it's time to now focus on a well deserved off season and start preparing for the 5th instalment of the Friendship is Magic generation in 2015.

What exciting adventures and moments will we encounter in the future?

All will be revealed in due time.

It's Finale Day!

This is it. We have finally made it.

This one day has many names to call itself by. The Season 4 Finale. The Grand Final. The Final Whistle. The Curtain Call. One Last Shindig.

After 26 of the best episodes that this show has had to offer, through the blistering heat of summer and right through the cold of autumn it comes down to this one hour, one night, one moment in time.

The fourth season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has produced some of the most memorable, and at times forgettable moments. Moments which have made us laugh, cry and even cheer. Moments which have made us leap from our seats and hold our breath in disbelief. Moments which gave us cuteness overload.

Who could remember when Scootaloo overcame the odds and in the face of defeat to pull off a performance of a lifetime in Flight to the Finish? Who could remember the emotional toil and heartbreak Pinkie Pie had to go through when Cheese Sandwich came to town and caused her to give up all hope in Pinkie Pride?

Who remembers when Sweetie Belle deliberately sabotaged Rarity's hard work and then Princess Luna showing her in a dream what would happen if she didn’t correct her ways?

Or when Applejack, a 30 year veteran of the MLP universe, proved her worth by taking a stand and giving the Flim Flam Brothers a massive lesson on honesty?

Let's not forget Spike! He also played a part in making this season a success. The little dragon who has been through so much this season finally getting his moment in the spotlight in Inspiration Manifestation and just last week, having the honour and privilege to be picked to light the cauldron at the Equestria Games in front of a worldwide audience.

It is not just episodes that shone in the spotlight this season as fan favourite characters have also been turned into household names.

Names such as Maud Pie, Pinkie's older sister and the fashionista mare from Manehattan, Coco Pommel have spawned off fan made merchandise including plushies and custom figurines in within hours of the episode going to air and are still talked about long after their debut to the world.

These are just some of the moments that made this season a truly special one, and those memories which will live with us for a lifetime and also pass on to future generations so they can discover the magic for themselves.

From the season premiere announcement back in July last year, to the first animatic presentation at Comic-Con and the premiere episodes on that Saturday night in November, the stage is now finally set to bring the curtain down one last time.

So tonight when the locks come off the box and its contents revealed to the world, fans will be talking about this one night for many years to come.

As the age old saying goes, all good things come in due time.

Get ready.

Share the Spirit (Equestria Games)

WARNING: As per my previous posts on this topic, it contains items that are from a personal retrospective and are based on my thoughts and mine alone. Trolls, haters and wannabe heroes who want to cause trouble will be dealt with and run the risk of being reported. This post also may contains some spoilers for those who haven't seen the show yet, so you've been warned.

With that said....

♫ We want to share the centuries gone. A golden age will reign. Where the spirit of competition, burns so bright, in the eternal flame.... ♫

The above line is from a very well known song that was used for the Sydney 2000 Olympic bid. The song is called "Share the Spirit" and was a driving force in getting Sydney the games back in 1993 with it's powerful emotions, hard driving melody and lyrics that made Sydney an ideal located to host an Olympic Games and eventually in my case, the Paralympic Games soon after.

The Sydney 2000 games were also a special time in my life as I was picked to carry the Paralympic torch in the torch relay that year.

So when I first heard about the Equestria Games episodes and Spike's involvement in a very big role of lighting the cauldron and taking part in it's relay, this instantly reflected my torchbearer experiences 14 years ago.

That's right, this is an episode that I can easily relate to and know all to well.

So sit back, relax and pull up a cuppa. This week's post episode write up is going to be a long one.

Spike Takes Centre Stage

First off, being told that you are part of the torch relay, whether it would be Olympic or Paralympic is a very huge deal for not only yourself, but also for those around you. Whether it would be the local community, your friends or even your family, the feeling of getting that torchbearers acceptance letter and knowing that you made it has to be one of the most inspiring things that can happen.

For Spike there wasn't a need for a letter to tell him he was lighting the torch and taking part in his relay run, it just takes two Crystal guards to escort him to the royal palace and being told on the spot by Twilight Sparkle and Princess Cadance that he was going to make history by taking part due to saving the Crystal Empire two years earlier.

When it came time to light the cauldron however, there were a few technical issues, again not Spike's fault.

Although Spike is more than capable of using his fire breath, what could stop him from lighting the cauldron?

Was it nerves? Was it being anxious? Stage fright?

While we would never know what happened to Spike, I can easily feel his pain.

When I did my torch run 14 years ago, I too felt nervous and also anxious before my relay moment. It is perfectly normal to have "jelly legs" or your stomach churning before you start your run. It is also normal to have weird dreams or nightmares the night before. But all of that aside, on the day of my big moment, I was to start the NSW road journey of the torch relay and this involved lighting my torch from the cauldron on stage.

For me, it took a few goes to get the torch lit due to it being put out a few times, but I wasn't all that embarrassed about the flame going out and I soon made my way out of the Moss Vale showgrounds and onto the Illawarra Highway.

So for Spike, it wasn't his fault that he couldn't get his fire breath going to light the cauldron, although that bit wasn't covered by BronyState as the feed crashed during a critical moment...

Memories of Sydney, Played Out in Equestria

At the Equestria Games, while there wasn't any memorable moments such as Cathy Freeman's 400m final gold medal race like in Sydney, everypony wanted to see the one race that filled every seat in the stadium.

The Aerial Relay Final. Team Ponyville vs. Team Cloudsdale.

Dash vs. Spitfire.

Future Wonderbolt vs. The Captain.

The race itself lived up to it's name, tension at every corner, the lead changing many times, but it wasn't to be for Team Ponyville.

Now, let me go off course and into the real world for a minute.

In normal circumstances, the Australian media has this thing where if you fail to win gold, you are branded a loser, a choker and told that they are a national disgrace. Heck, Uncle Rupert and his Newscorpse papers would have a field day and have headlines on the sports pages saying things like:

PONYVILLE CHOKES - They couldn't even win a dog fight.

Now while this is a fact of life, I didn't want to see things like that play out in this episode, let alone any television program designed for kids. Do you know why I don't want to see things like that played out?

Because it would send a bad message to the viewers that putting down losers was OK and it also would have spawned a ton of hate for the team. Rainbow Dash would have been in tears and crying her eyes out at the hurtful words and it would have taken a coarse language filled, inspirational pep talk from Spitfire to bring her out of her depressive flunk.

Luckily though, that didn't happen.

In the end it was a hoof bump between Dash and Spitfire and they accepted their medals, despite Spike's bad singing of the Cloudsdale anthem. Personally, I would have preferred if the Hymn de l'Avenir, aka the Paralympic anthem would be played instead, but we instead got Spike trying his best to make up for the cauldron lighting mess.

Thank Celestia for keeping the Rupes rags out of Equestria.

The Closing Ceremony

The final segment of the episode involved the ice archery event. One medal for Ponyville to win on the medal count, Cloudsdale needs one medal to defend their title.

But the question the fans were asking was, where is Spike? Did the pressure of embarrassing himself force him into hiding for the 16 days of competition?

Unfortunately, this happened.

Spike, feeling defeated and resigned to being the dragon who made a fool of himself in front of millions of ponies twice, had to be pulled out of the room in the athletes village by Twilight Sparkle, even if it mean't having to be dragged out by force.

So what was a dragon to do? He couldn't bare to be seen in public again after the cauldron lighting incident and the anthem singing going bad, but what happened in a space of five minutes changed everything about him in a heartbeat.

A stray ice arrow ended up being lodged inside a cloud. The end result, a ice cloud that could have caused disaster if it fell on the stadium and the crowd. Even the pegasus ponies couldn't bring the cloud down.

So what did happen? Did the cloud crash on the crowd?

Not by a long shot...

Spike out of nowhere gave a deep breath and out came a fire breath so hot that it melted the ice cloud!

After all of the pain and suffering that he went through this season, it came down to that one moment.

In the end, was the Equestria Games worth it? Yes it was.

For many people like myself, the episode brought back some memories of those 16 days in Sydney 14 years ago, and for the show to cover an event like this was no easy challenge in it's self.

The only complaint that I have about the episode is, well I'll let my tweet sum it up:

While I enjoyed the episode, I was a bit disappointed that they didn't show many ponies in the Paralympic arena. I grew up watching the Paralympic Games and apart from my torch relay run, I did attend a full day at the games in Sydney with my local high school and the competition on display was something to write home about.

I know I am going to cop a lot of heat for this, but there is much more to the Equestria Games than the able bodied competition and it's Paralympic counterpart, even if it would be in the form of a animated short on it's own or even an episode of it's very own would have been a great addition as a nod to the Paralympic movement.

But one can only dream I suppose....

Shot Down, Again.

"Well there goes my chances of going to Sydneigh. Parents haven't got back to me since I spoke to my Mum yesterday. (Sighs)....why can't I just get a little independence for once?"

I'll say it before, and I'll say it again, being a brony and living in a rural area or village is a very difficult life.

Difficult in the sense of a lack of public transport in the town with only one or two trains running per day. Difficult in the sense that I am still cooped up under my parents roof and forced to defer moving out of home until my sister gets married in 2016. Difficult in the sense that I won't be able to meet the very people that changed my life and breathed life into characters that I can now associate with.

My parents just simply don't get the idea that I want to spread my wings and explore the world, but they think that I can't handle being in Sydney for a convention held a weekend on my own.

While I have to respect their wishes due to being under their roof, I am starting to feel like all hope has been lost at this point. I had a chance to attend Ponycon in Melbourne earlier this year, but I had to cancel my plans when my grandma passed away, and now my chances of going to Sydneigh are also gone as well with my parents giving a firm but silent, NO to that idea.

So there goes another chance, shot down into pieces.

(Sighs)....why can't I just move the moving out thing forward a year or so?

A Gold Plated (and Rarity) Masterpiece (Inspiration Manifestation)

With that said....

*cues up the opening video of SBS Television in 1980 and puts a twist on the lyrics*

♫ "Equestria is a nation, with ponies and creatures of the world. Of many different cultures, meeting in our filles and colts. It's all us together that has seen this country grow, from all the different nations, to a nation of our own." ♫

A twist on a classic piece of Australian television history. 1980 saw the Special Broadcasting Service, aka SBS launch it's television service in Sydney and Melbourne and it came with a musical piece that was used as it's startup film for each days transmission.

The portion of the song you just read was a modified version to fit life in Equestria and it's diverse culture. It doesn't matter if you are a earth pony, unicorn, pegasus, princess, griffin, breezie, or even the vendor on the street or a zebra mixing up a potion in a hut on the Everfree Forest what makes Equestria unique is the many different types of creatures and ponies working together side by side.

But somewhere, somepony has not been getting a fair go. Throughout this season, this person has been the tail end of jokes designed to hurt feelings, been the scapegoat and the primary blame for the breezies being knocked off course without any evidence at all and this is starting to get all too much for him.

I am talking about Spike. The fun loving, handy and helpful, noble and brave dragon and the assistant to Twilight Sparkle. This season has all been about "lets kick him to the curb" and "lets play a joke where he makes plenty of food for a large crowd and then it goes to waste". But yet, we haven't seen a decent solo episode where he truly shines.

This morning however this all changed with a little number that we like to call, Inspiration Manifestation.

Rarity vs The Puppeteer = Disaster

The story begins in Ponyville, where the annual Foal and Filly Fair is being held. A once a year event to celebrate the movement and spirit of the mares and colts of tomorrow and to also have a little fun in the process.

Rarity and Spike are working on a puppeteers performance box in the Carousel Boutique and after the finishing touches were put on and the usual quality assurance testing for safety and comfort was done, it was out to the open world for the final evaluation from the head puppeteer Claude.

Now, you might think that is the end of the story. But it is not.

Claude after much inspection and checking decides that the box is not suitable for his needs and decides to cancel the puppet show.

Ouch. Not a good start to the episode. The puppeteer really needs to get a grip and look at the bigger picture. #MLPSeason4

Now in most circumstances, this would be a case of forget about it and move on. However with Rarity, she runs away from Spike and the box in tears with a flood of negative thoughts clouding her mind, wondering if she would ever bounce back in time to contribute something else to the fair.

In the end, Rarity decides to give up and curl up on the couch and dig into some comfort food. Vanilla Oat Swirl ice cream to be exact, and not the generic kind you find in a supermarket freezer.

Bouncing Back, Courtesy of Spike

As mentioned at the start of this post, this episode centres around Spike and his quest to put some inspiration back into Rarity so she can get back to business.

But his idea of bouncing back from the depths of despair doesn't involve binge eating until a pony gets sick or falling into a crazy state and going to a trip. Instead, a trip to the old castle and a spellbook is in order.

The spell in question, of course it is going to be the title of the episode. Inspiration Manifestation, a spell that instantly brings great ideas to life.

After some convincing and a little bit of a pep talk and 13 tubs of Blue Ribbon later, Rarity decides to give the spell a try and while things went well at the start, there was something about the spell that caused Rarity to become....well let's say possessed with a little too much inspiration.

Get Help! Rarity is Gone Nuts!

After convincing Claude about the new design for the puppeteers box, Rarity decides to put the spell to good use.

But things start to get a little too serious when the power starts to consume her.

What was originally intended to be a short term fix decided to become a nightmare for both the residents of Ponyville and Twilight as well. Rarity moves on from puppet shows to giving Rainbow Dash a new outfit, trapping a robin in a sophisticated birdhouse and Fluttershy ending up being worried, crashing a birthday party and making it sophisticated with finger food, properly dressed wait staff and a classical music piece with none other than...

By this point, Rarity decides that crashing parties and ruining a ponies day wasn't enough for her liking and starts to trap ponies in a crystal version of the town centre and paving the roads with gold, temporarily blinding the residents of Ponyville in the process.

Who would be the one to bring Rarity to heel and bring this madness to a stop?

The one character who has been given grief of course!

It all comes down to one moment. One chance, one opportunity.

Spike has to put the brakes on Rarity and bring this madness to a stop. So he does the unthinkable, he looks into the eyes, goes up close and takes the spell book from her and like a hot sizzling dish, swallows the book whole without any regard for his digestive health.

The spell is broken. The mess comes to an end. Rarity returns to normal, and Spike finally gets the first of his big moments in this season.

You couldn't make this up even if you tried. It was....special!

In Conclusion

*standing ovation* Give this dragon a huge round of applause. This episode is a gold plated masterpiece. Well done Spike. #MLPSeason4

At the end of the day, Spike fans got what they wanted. A fair go for the little dragon who has been through so much this season, yet he was given so little in return. In summary, this episode was more than a gold plated masterpiece that was kept in a vault for years on end, it was 30 minutes of pure magic that couldn't be replaced.

With three episodes remaining in the season, next weekend sees the big one. Spike features again in an episode of his own, but not in a solo role.

Spike the Dragon: An Appreciation

"Spike has been on the short end of the stick as of late and I think this episode might have been the breaking point for him. Why are they doing this?!" - Season 4, Episode 16: "It Ain’t Easy Being Breezies"

Spike the Dragon. Four generations, 30 years of being a character with pride. From being by Tirek's side as villain's assistant to being by Twilight's side in the new generation of My Little Pony today, this little dragon has done more things than you could imagine in a lifetime.

But as of late, Spike has been going through a rough patch in the fourth season of the Friendship is Magic generation and the assistant to Twilight Sparkle had to play second fiddle and even at times be the victim of jokes and even near misses such as the Breezies being knocked off course, and some of the fans are not all too that happy about it.

Now while I might not be a huge fan of Spike, I believe in a fair go for everypony and a equal playing field for both ponies and dragons alike regards of how they are portrayed on screen. This also goes for villains such as Queen Chrysalis and Sunset Shimmer.

So with the current season drawing to a close and with four episodes to go, I thought I put together this inspiration piece not as a source of inspiration, but to also provide some encouraging words as well.

So…where do we begin?

First off, Spike might look small, playful and fun loving on the outside, but on the inside Spike is much more than a dragon who helps out in the Treebrary fire blowing letters and documentation to Equestria Royalty and helping Twilight out around the place and even though he stuffed up a few times and even tried to frame pets such as Owlowiscious, Spike deep down cares about the ponies, creatures and even his own dragon kind with the at most respect that he can give.

Despite his good and bad moments, Spike has been there for those who need a shoulder to cry on and to spin their tales of woe. Whether it would be Twilight having a very bad day, worrying about a upcoming test or tripping up on Princess Celestia or even Rarity being upset over one of her crushes turning their back on her and causing heartache and heartbreak, Spike is always there to listen, to care and even to understand, no matter what happens.

His cooking skills are indeed second to none. I mean, who could bake pastries and cakes without an oven when you could use your fire breath for instant results? From mixing bowl to table in minutes and no dishes to do at the end of the meal. Although he does eat some of the ingredients such as gemstones, but that is how a dragon acts at the best of times.

Let's also not forget the many roles Spike has played over the years. Whether it would be being the host, compere and narrator in the Hearth's Warming Eve pageant or being in the commentary box for the Running of the Leaves with Pinkie Pie, if you want somepony reliable for a performing job or a hosting role, then Spike is more than capable, no matter the job, big or small.

Spike also played a part in saving the Crystal Empire from almost going back to Sombra's rule and also saved the crystal heart from being smashed into pieces. For his brave efforts and courage, he has a stained window in the Canterlot Royal Palace to remind ponies (and dragons too) about his milestones and achievements and to also inspire the future generation.

He also grew up in that place and learned from the best, met his future best friend Twilight Sparkle, who was also the one who hatched him during her entrance exam and from that day they have been the best of friends ever since.

With all of the good things being said about him, if there has to be one question that the fans would ask, it has to be this.

"Why is Spike being treated unfairly? Why wait until now to move with these plans to reduce him to a character who did so much, to somepony who has been in the walls and thrown around like a rag doll for comic relief purposes?"

Simply put, Spike doesn't mean no harm to anypony.

At the end of the day, all he wants do is to live life the way he sees fit without anypony getting in his way.

Instead of that, we are seeing the exact opposite of what he is entitled to do.

Spike is much more than a dragon who is used for comic relief, without him saving the crystal heart, the Crystal Empire wouldn't be what it is today.

I just hope someone, somewhere has a better idea or plans for him in the future.

Exactly. Why hasn't Equestria got a credit or debit card system like we do? A simple credit or bit debit card would fit the bill and it saves having not to trade away valuable items to get what you want. Even if the credit limits are low (e.g. 500 or even a 1000 bits) or the cards are linked to a bank account hosted at a local credit union, building society or even a independent bank in terms of a debit card, it would make the process smoother.

Rainbow would have got her book without having to trade her best friend away by simply saying these words:

Rainbow Dash: I'll charge it on my Pony Access (PAC) MasterCard!

Friends, Do Not Friends, Trade Each Other Away

"Thank you Fluttershy. I knew my fillyhood friend would be there for me and see it through! I couldn’t have done it with you." - Wonderbolt Academy: Worth the Hype? (16/12/12)

Remember these words? Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy go back a long, long way.

From fillies in Cloudsdale, to flight camp and to life in Ponyville. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy have been the best of friends even through the toughest of times and also through the glory and the tragedy.

So when Rainbow Dash wanted a super limited edition, mint in the box Daring Do hardcover book, she had to trade a rusty horseshoe, a glass challis, a ancient chicken and a mythical creature just to get it. But when it came time to make the final purchase, the trader who wanted to give the book away decided to add in a clause saying that Fluttershy had to go to Manehattan and train the creature up.

At this point, I would have walked away from the deal.

Instead, Rainbow Dash decided to trade Fluttershy away.

*Gasps!*

Why would she do that?

Rainbow Dash, she is your best friend. Your fillyhood friend. The friend who lends a hoof and allows you to cry on her shoulder when things are looking down and out. A friend who helped build her self confidence and initiative after years of being a pushover and being shy all the time. A true, true friend who would drop anything to give you reassurance and comfort when the chips are down.

Luckily though, the bad ending didn't happen and the deal was voided.

But this brings up a point, why didn't Rainbow stop and think before she did the deal?

Mixed Bag and Misc

Despite a spam bot army throwing everything but the kitchen sink in the show hashtag again, the episode was a bit of a mixed bag for me.

Apart from those two points that I mentioned, the episode itself as a 50/50 in my books. There were a few scenes where I had a bit of a laugh, but the story arc of Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash was the main focus of this episode for me, although Rarity and Applejack pooling resources to find antiques and resulting in bitter infighting was an attention grabber in it's self.

Spike finally got what he wanted when he traded his comic book away, but the same old treatment that he has been getting this season still continues on. I often wonder if Spike is going through a rough patch in his life right now, because being treated like crap on a day to day basis can start getting to a person very quickly.

In the end, it was great to see how the Equestrian economy operates and the addition of the three separate story arcs made for an episode that was great to watch, but it wasn't a blockbuster or memorable one for me.

With only four episodes left to go until that grand final day in May, the next two episodes will be focused on a little dragon who has been given grief to no end this season.

Will Spike finally get a positive break and shake off the negativity at long last?

Don't worry Spiky Wikey, things will get better. Just don't worry about the ponies who put you down and treat you like dirt.

When you think study, exams and "Peter Perfect" results, you have to come across one unicorn, now turned alicorn mare known as Twilight Sparkle. She too has come a long say since those early days where some fans hated her guts to no end and wrote her off as a character with no relations in real life.

But let us stop there for a minute.

Twilight is just getting used to her wings and Rainbow Dash wants to study for the test. These two ponies are totally and completely different in both personality and also skills.

So when you put the two together, you end up with the most explosive situation but yet it is a exciting and funny scene that was well thought of.

You have the flashcards, the cue cards, textbooks on the Wonderbolts history with highlight marks inside and goodness knows how much the fines would be if you did that to a real book plus a pop quiz at the end of it all with no lifelines and no Eddie to give you small hints on what the answers are.

Tensions rose and eventually it almost came to blows but Fluttershy stepped in before the punches could fly.

After that, the episode just kept getting better.

If you want a way to study for a test, but don't have the time or the skills like Twilight, then do what Pinkie does....rap it!

The rap sequence was yet another technological challenge for DHX and they pulled it off without a hitch and with Pinkie Pie and Vinyl Scratch in the same room, in the same place at the same time, who could have thought that they would work so well together?

The visuals of the rap sequence were amazing and the throwback to the childhood where VHS ruled the home entertainment market, laserdiscs and appliances were expensive as heck due to the Wholesale Sales Tax (WST) and Australia was actually winning at sports and not being hounded or put down in the media if they lost.

Who could have thought putting together a sequence based on 1990's technology of physical video mixers, VHS or Betacam broadcast video quality and even emulating the sound of the video tape at the time was a pretty amazing feat in it's self, even right down to the aspect ratio.

More of the technology throwbacks in the episode also included the rewinding sequences when Rainbow Dash was flying with Twilight and the breaking down of a segment of her fight, even right down to the Cutie Mark Crusaders (CMC) visit to Sugarcube Corner.

This would be the stage for one of the final scenes that would be remembered for years to come.

Visual Studying, 5,000 Ft Above the Air

The last scene in the episode was something that was unique in it's self, despite having to take my focus away from the action to report spammers distributing viruses and malware on the official show hashtag.

Watching the scene again this time with full concentration in tow just not only put a smile on my face after the events of the last few days sending me into a depressive flunk, but also brought a few tears to my eyes in the process.

Where do I begin?

Do I start talking about the CMC's and their EUP (Earth, Unicorn and Pegasi) chant to Dash? The one where Scootaloo, who idolises Rainbow Dash helps her out with pride in her voice?

Or when an entire town, after many great years of service to Rainbow decided to repay the favour and help out in her studying by placing signs and even dressing up in the traditional Wonderbolts outfits and giving Dash hints of their history?

I can't say much more about this sequence other than, it was a real eye opener for me.

While I had an easy road through my schooling in both primary and secondary, I had trouble studying as well and even though I had two exams to do in my Higher School Certificate, the study for those exams was not easy.

This scene and the episode in general reflected some of those elements that I had to go through in real life and without a doubt, it was a well crafted piece that deserves a true place in MLP history.

What an episode! Not much more to say that Rainbow Dash passed her exam and she is Wonderbolts bound! Well done! #MLPSeason4

In the end, this episode while I didn't pay much attention due to the spammers on Twitter running riot was a very good one to watch on the second time around.

I don't have much else to say due to the events of the last couple of days putting me out to dry, but with five episodes remaining in the season and the synopsis and title revealed for the finale on May 10, this season is going to go out with a huge roar of approval from the fans.

Now to look forward to a week away from the ponies and start making plans to move before Trade Ya airs.

From Acceptance to Transition

When you decide, that you want to change something in your life, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

Hair style? That can be done.

Personality? That can be done, but sometimes not by choice.

But what about gender? That's a question that I have been wanting to ask for some time.

Now I have my chance, and this bit of news will mark post number 200 for this blog.

As you may know by now, I run not only this blog and the RJRTV official website but also a blog dedicated to my female side known as La Señorita Cecilia (link) which covers my day to day challenges and struggles plus a few fashionable posts to add in the mix.

Ever since I started to crossdress all those years ago and agreed on the female name, I've always wanted, and had a passion to be a female. I never had the courage, nor the confidence to speak to my parents about the issue in fear of retaliation and banishment and also actions of repercussion and arguments and clashes.

I am also in my late twenties going on to my early 30's and still under my parents roof. Transport to work involves a car ride up and back everyday and going to events such as brony meetups and conventions is next to impossible.

So on Wednesday 2nd April, I did the impossible. I came out.

That's right. I came out. Not as a gay, not as a lesbian, but a transwoman.

I never thought I could do something like that in my life.

My parents knew already this would happen. My dad was expecting the news, while my mum is naturally upset.

For me, this marks a huge stepping stone and a chapter that I never thought I could start.

For the next three to five years I'll be making a huge heap into my female self, and in the next six to twelve months I'll be finally fleeing the nest and making my own way through life.

Now the real work begins. Where to from here? Where do I start?

Who knows what will the future will bring?

There is only one way to find out. It is time to return home.

Applejack.

Love her or hate her, for over 30 years she has gone from being a silly pony to a force to be reckoned with.

While I do have to admit that I didn't particularly like her style when I first got into watching the show three years ago and didn't pay much attention, she has gone from strength to strength and started to shine for me late into the third season with the episode Apple Family Reunion.

That particular episode saw a major change in Applejack that started to bring out the truthful best in her, even through the stress, anxiety and a few tears at the end.

So fast forward a year or so later, we have another episode where she puts her honest traits to the test once again.

I give you....Leap of Faith!

Flim & Flam: Con Jobs, Rip Off Artists and (still) Cheats

"He's Flim, He's Flam. They are the world famous Flim Flam Brothers. Or as I prefer to call them, the world famous con jobs, rip off artists and cheats."

I'll be honest with you, while I forgave some villains in the show like Discord and Sunset Shimmer after their dirty deeds (done dirt cheap!), there is no forgiveness for two ponies who almost put Sweet Apple Acres out of business two years ago.

Flim & Flam in this episode were still up to their no good ways and to be quite honest with you, I still hate their guts even after two years of reflection time on their crimes. Trying to put Sweet Apple Acres out of business is one thing, but forcing the Apple Family out after the cider drama is another story altogether.

So what they bring to the table this time round?

A tonic that claims that it can heal or cure all the common health issues.

I wonder what is in that tonic anyway? Something dangerous? Something unsafe? #MLPSeason4

Even before the episode went to air, fans were guessing what the tonic would do to Granny Smith. Would it heal her health issues? Would it make her sick? Or would we have a Mr Hooper style situation where Granny Smith suddenly passes away and we have an episode on the topic of death and grieving?

Surprisingly, the tonic didn't cause the last option, nor it did make her sick. I would have hated to see option two or three play out in front of a worldwide audience to be quite honest with you, seeing Apple Bloom crying her eyes out would be the icing on the cake.

Instead, Granny Smith was up and about without a care in the world swimming in the lakes and completing in synchronised swimming with Apple Bloom and diving from the 10m platform without any regard for her body. Big Mac even got involved in the action!

30 Years of Honesty, Put to the Test

I knew even before the episode aired that the tonic was another scam, but when you have the likes of the Flim Flam Brothers pulling the strings and encouraging people to lie through the skin of their own teeth, that is where the line gets crossed.

Applejack is the Element of Honesty, no doubt about it. So what happens when 30 years of those traits get put on the line?

You get her trying to expose the truth and wanting to know the real ingredients in the tonic, encouraging others to tell the truth and even after stopping Granny Smith from meeting a fate with St Peter (bad choice of words I know), the ultimate test came at around three minutes to two Australian Eastern Daylight Time:

Applejack at this point went full on out without a care in the world and exposed Flim & Flam's little game and ripped them to shreds, eventually leading both colts to wave the white flag and flee Ponyville with guard ponies on their tail.

That performance has to be one of the best from a pony who four years ago was destined for the rubbish bin and fans hated her guts from day one despite a long standing heritage being one of the original G1 ponies.

In the end, the fifth key was obtained.

Honourable Mentions

This episode, apart from being for me a chance to rip apart and shred Flim & Flam was pretty good with a few mentions and shoutouts to the days of old.

The flashback sequence with Granny Smith was a great addition. The old time music, the sepia tones and the film leader sure brought back some memories, especially if you got a interest of old school film and TV in your blood.

At the end of 30 minutes, this episode was a great one to watch despite most of the live reactions tweets from me being a bit biased.

With six episodes remaining in the season, I've got a good feeling we are going to see more memorable moments along the way as we come closer to the Crystal Empire and the 31st Games of Equestria.

Pardon my language from that tweet. Although I went a little overboard, this sets the scene for what I am about to write in this article you are reading now. Also before you ask, yes I know that companies need to defend their trademarks or risk losing them, but this article is not about whether the actions were legal or not.

With that said....

Hard Times, Emotions and a Crisis in the Brony Fandom

Ever since I joined the brony community back in 2011, I have played many roles and my part in this community.

From the early days of sitting on the sidelines, to writing my post episode thoughts on this blog and eventually putting my literature skills to good use as a member of the Bronies Australia news writing team, a job which I do with pride and with a purpose to inform the Australian brony community on the latest fandom news from home and abroad, events such as conventions and meetups and even a trip down memory lane or two plus a chance for the community as a whole to have their say on the issues that matter to them.

I don't normally write articles like this for a start, nor do I get involved in subject matter such as legal issues.

Ever since the Fighting is Magic C&D and eventual shutdown a year ago, the pain from the first couple of days is very well known to some. Friendships were tested, some broken. The fandom for some time was split into two as one side argued that nothing could be done while on the other end of the coin, there were a group of people who believed that change was possible.

Calpain from Equestria Daily decided to, out of the ordinary to write an inspirational piece for its header image for the Nightly Roundup to help ease the fandom during a rough patch:

“I know a lot of us are feeling quite under the weather right now, what with all the recent news and the emotional whiplash it has caused a great number of people. I'm just one silly person, but I do believe in you guys and the community as a whole. We will face tough times, yes; some way tougher than others, but we still have each other! Don't let the events of the passing days divide us and cast us against one another, and take strength in the vast number of pony projects and creations that inundate the web every single day. As long as we maintain that enthusiasm and creative spark we've had since the early days, we'll keep marching on no matter what is in our way.” – Nightly Roundup #578, February 10 2013.

So here I am. Here to do the same thing this time round.

I thought I provide some words of wisdom and hope in light of the JanAminations C&D news that happened over the weekend.

Ever since the news broke on Saturday, fans like you and me are feeling a range of emotions from being angry and upset to flat out blowing emotional fuses and going ape you know what all over a broken copyright and trademark law that needs to be scrapped, overhauled or even tossed in a paper shredder and start from scratch.

Let me be honest with you, as Calpain said in the quote above, there are going to be dark days and rough patches for all of us.

It is perfectly OK to feel angry, upset, sad and even going into a full blown rage after reading the news.

Heck, I had an emotional meltdown before I found out and then went into a full blown rage myself when I read the article.

We also have our opinions on the issue and no two people are alike or think the same.

Unfortunately though, there are a few people, not naming names who think they need to start fighting against other people over it and causing grief for others.

This is true when I was reading the reactions from the news.

Actions that are Uncalled For

When I searched for "JanAnimations" or even the newly formed "Save Our Fandom" campaign on Twitter or even my usual fare of brony websites, I see some constructive and positive words for change such as calling or law reform. But sadly most of the search results and forum posts are of a negative nature and even go as far as attacking other fans, criticising their choices, telling people that they don't know what they are doing and not to bother fighting back and even going as far as using insults, foul language and even hate attacks towards others.

Simply put, there is no need for that sort of behaviour in any capacity.

Do you remember the age old saying of "love and tolerance" when the early days of the fandom where we were subject to ridicule from the outside world from the likes of Newscorpse and Fox News?

What happened to those values that we learned?

What happened of learning to accept ones differences and moving on?

What happened to helping others out in situations like this and giving people reassurance that things will work out?

Instead, all I see is fans wanting to attack and even frustrate the living daylights out of people who are trying to help out.

In Conclusion and What You Can Do

Yes, the laws need to be changed to suit a new era of fandoms everywhere and to open up the floodgates for a global unity on entertainment releases such as movies, but there is no need for people to stoop down to new lows by attacking or hurting others just to make a point known.

We need to stop fighting among ourselves and instead focus on the positive aspects of the fandom while calling for legislative change without having to resort to such lows.

If you care about wanting to make a change, then the first port of call is not to Hasbro themselves, but to your Federal Member of Parliament or representative in the Senate in your state. In other countries, this could be called a range of things including a local member or even congressman or woman to name a few and tell them what has been happening and what needs to be done.

At the end of the day, all I simply ask is this.

Stop the Fighting.

Stop the Hate.

Start Looking Towards The Future.

Make a Move.

Make a Noise to Hear Our Concerns.

Make a Change.

Make a Difference.

Heartfelt, Sisterly Feels (For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils)

Sister. Brother. Siblings.

These three words are hard for me to comprehend or even understand when I was younger.

To be honest, I wasn't really up to scratch when I was younger and I never even knew what a siblings role was. It is an issue that I never wanted to speak about for many years due to the pain and suffering that I had to go through as a result of my younger years and still understanding the Aspergers/Autism that I was still trying to get used to at the time.

So when I discovered My Little Pony back in 2011, the very first episode I watched was on this particular subject. That episode was titled "Sisterhooves Social" and that episode reflected my real world situation with my siblings, even right down to Rarity and Sweetie Belle fighting and disowning each other.

Fast forward to 2014 and despite some drama, the final episode of the Sisterhooves Month set of episodes went to air this morning titled appropriately enough, For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils.

The Episode Where They Tried to Break Me...

First off, what can I say?

This episode tested my emotions, anxiety, stress levels and even my PTSD. Also this episodes hype and enthusiasm was shattered a few hours before broadcast with the JanAnimations C&D news sending the fans into battle mode and turning stream chat rooms into political battlegrounds, threats of DDoSing and hacking in retaliation and even yours truly had a fuse blow. These events kept the moderation staff busy and even had a hard time trying to keep order due to the news dominating the episode.

But enough about that subject.

Now while I don't normally say that when I come to describing how I felt about an episode as they would normally either put me in a positive and upbeat mood or in the case of a certain episode where a certain pegasus pony went through hell with a superhero power which I hate it's guts for, I went full throttle and blew fuses left, right and centre.

This episode however was different. Some of the scenes got me anxious and even my stress levels went through the roof at times due to the subject matter being covered. There were some scenes where I couldn't even watch them at all.

The Dream (Nightmare) Sequence

The dream sequence with Luna and Sweetie Belle was one of those scenes that I couldn't watch without having to turn away from the screen, but it wasn't by choice. While I wanted to see the entire sequence, I couldn't do it without having to mute the sound on my headphones or turn away from the monitor at times.

While this might sound like a bad thing, but when you have been through the same experience that Sweetie Belle did in real life, then you shouldn't be blamed or ashamed to say that you couldn't watch the whole episode without having to turn away at some scenes at times.

Now while there were some scenes that I enjoyed, this was mainly the first half the dream sequence with Sweetie's 5th birthday party and seeing a foal sized variant of her trying to emulate her big sister, makeup, dress, shoes and all.

Seeing a younger Sweetie Belle produced some D'Awwww moments, but all of that changed when she eventually ended in tears and crying on her bed over a comment that a colt said over her big sister and her party. The rest of the sequence eventually turned out to be one nightmarish ride after another with the future sequence and Rarity ending up going into OCD mode and even shunning away her friends.

However, despite these things I have to give the DHX team credit when it came to conveying the message across by pushing the boundaries with the visual designs used.

Honourable Mentions

Apart from that, the story was well written and even the inclusion of Sapphire Shores was a huge bonus after a long hiatus ever since the first appearance back in Season 1. The play sequence with the CMC was also great, especially with the costume designs and even the final parts of the episode where Sweetie and her friends were on a race against time to repair the damage that she caused to Rarity's work.

In Conclusion

Ok, calling it now. This episode is deep. Emotionally deep. Well written and well performed. Outstanding! #MLPSeason4

In the end, despite the conditions firing all at once. This episode really brought home the issue were well and the emotions ran well and truly deep inside to the point that....

The Brony Black Saturday: Part II

(Sighs)....not this again. Not this issue again.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that the brony fandom was commemorating the one year anniversary of the Fighting is Magic shutdown (link) and the effects that have come out of the incident.

To quote from my original post:

"What we have seen today has to be, undoubtedly one of the most darkest days in the history of the brony fandom.

Fans have been attacked, friendships have been tested and even broken, corporate greed has risen over and killed fan projects left, right and centre and that's only the tip of the iceberg."

Unfortunately, it seems with the sands of time, they don't often heal for corporations who think they are above the law and throw and idea of fair use (or fair dealing in Australia) out the window and just hours before the new My Little Pony episode titled "For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils" goes to air, Hasbro has yet again claimed another victim in this broken copyright and trademark war.

JanAnimations, the person behind such fan made animated productions based on the show which we cannot name due to the high risk involved received a C&D notice this afternoon and demanding all fan made works to removed or face legal action.

Again, like the Fighting is Magic shutdown, this has split the brony fandom into two and again fans who want change in the broken laws are being attacked plus friendships, short and long term have been tested and even broken.

Now while I don't want to get into full details on what happened after seeing the Equestria Daily article (link) due to having blown a emotional fuse and almost flying off the handle as they would say and even making some tweets which could have seen me off to gaol (prison) for a few years, but this is an issue that keeps creeping up time and time again.

First we have seen it with Fighting is Magic last year and now this mess and as always, the fans are up in arms and demanding changes in the law.

Now while I don't want to get involved on how this came to be nor I take any sides on this issue,in my opinion the whole copyright and trademark system, not only in Australia, but also worldwide in general is simply put, broken, tired, outdated and in need of a major overhaul.

There has to be a fair solution which benefits both parties to prevent things like this from happening again. If it means having to set up some guidelines on how fan works are made (e.g. for noncommercial use, not for profit etc) so fans don't end up falling in the same trap, then it might be a fair compromise in the long run.

As a member of the Australian branch of the Pirate Party, this is one of the issues that has currently on the agenda in regards to copyright and trademark reform in Australia at present and also fair use and fair dealing of content.

I won't go on any further due to risking another fuse blow, but I'll leave this tweet that I made earlier to sum up my feelings:

Limestone, Marble, Pinkie and Maud? (Maud Pie)

WARNING: As per my previous posts on this topic, it contains items that are from a personal retrospective and are based on my thoughts and mine alone. Trolls, haters and wannabe heroes who want to cause trouble will be dealt with and run the risk of being reported. This post also may contains some spoilers for those who haven't seen the show yet, so you've been warned.

With that said....

The Pie Sisters. Marble, Limestone and Pinkie. Born and raised on a rock farm outside of Ponyville under the guidance of their father Igneous Rock and a loving mother by the name of Cloudy Quartz.

They live a simple life, although the fun part of it was minimal until Pinkie discovered the Sonic Rainboom when she was a filly and from there, her life as well as her family changed forever.

But hold on for just a moment. Are you telling me that there is a forth Pie sister? An elder?

Believe it or not, there is an elder sister in the Pie family.

Her name is Maud Pie, and she isn't your typical run of the mill pony from the Pie's Rock Farm.

So hence the new episode titled by the character name which went to air this morning brought a new light to the Pie family and it's history.

With that said, let's get into the recap.

This episode is the second to go to air during Sisterhooves Month. An event (unofficially) which celebrates and captures the world of siblings and family and features three episodes airing during the month of March which showcase this aspect in one form or another.

But enough about the Sisterhooves Month, let's get into the main details of this post.

Welcome Maud Pie

Maud Pie as mentioned earlier on is the older sister of Pinkie Pie and the Pie sisters and seeing her for the first time ensured that this mare would be hitting fan favourite status in a short amount of time. It didn't take long for fans to latch on to her and welcome Maud with open arms.

We also saw first hand how Maud got some of the family traits from her mother and father with the straight name and tail, the dark coloured coat, the monotone voice, even down to the full knowledge of knowing which rock and it's type. All features unique to the Pie family, even down to the pet rocks that they have.

So why is she so different to Pinkie and why is the Mane 6 having a hard time to befriend her?

I mean, is it that she ate a whole rock without having any regard for their dental hygiene and at the risk of breaking a tooth or two?

Is it the ability to drill and break up rocks with their bare hooves to save your younger sister's life after setting up a Double Dare style obstacle course which went almost fatally wrong?

Is it the ability able to write such brilliant poetry and put her full literature skills to the test despite being a little on the bland side, but yet provide words of wisdom?

Is it the ability to carry around a pet rock everywhere she goes despite the risks of being picked on and bullied?

I often wonder if Cloudy Quartz (Pinkie's mother) brought her daughters up in a special way on that rock farm. The ability to eat rocks, drill rocks, write poetry and even carry a pet rock around with you is something of an amazing feat in it's self.

What else could Maud do that Pinkie and the sisters can't do by those four things that she did?

Let's Not Forget Pinkie...

Speaking of Pinkie, she was a lot better in this episode despite the past performances this season where she copped a lot of flack for the stuff she said and did. Sure she may have made Fluttershy cry twice in Filli Vanilli, but I just put that down as a lapse of good judgement and write it off as a life experience.

Anyway, this episode also got into seeing the traditions of the Pie family, including the world famous rock candy and the family necklaces. A quick nod is also in order for both traditions being demonstrated through the art of traditional paper animation.

Although it was simple and not to the renaissance standards that the likes of the big "D" experienced during the late 80's and early to mid 1990's, this small sample of animated brilliance despite being only for a few seconds really goes to show that the DHX team isn't afraid to try new things to make the episode go the extra mile or two and to also impress the viewer.

The one scene in this episode, which is now etched into the minds of the fans came when Pinkie had her heart ripped out emotionally when the Mane 6 decided to be blunt about Maud.

Seeing Pinkie's mane deflate, but luckily not into full blown Pinkamena (shutters at the thought of the various gore works etc) and biting her muzzle in an effort to try and not start crying was a heartfelt moment that was translated well to the viewer. Pinkie really cares about her family and her sisters and to see the Mane 6 decide to be full on blunt and with the painful truth about her older sister was more than enough to see Pinkie have her pride hurt once again.

Now I don't know if the writers this season have an agenda to put Pinkie against the wall and try and fight through the odds this season, but it seems to be having an impact with the major point being during the Pinkie Pride episode where she was taken though an emotional wringer and yet she bounced back from the depths of despair.

In Conclusion

Apart from that, Maud Pie is one of those episodes that I consider a must watch for anyone who is interested in how siblings and family work.

Again as I mentioned in my last episode recap post, I wasn't kind to my siblings when I was younger. So with the help of the show and it's last four seasons, I have started to understand a little more on how they work, but the scars of the past that I caused won't sadly heal anytime soon.

Speaking of which, the last of the Sisterhooves Month episodes involves Rarity and Sweetie Belle.

So I've got a bit of time to think things over until they tell their story next weekend.

Sibling & Independence (Somepony to Watch Over Me)

WARNING: As per my previous posts on this topic, it contains items that are from a personal retrospective and are based on my thoughts and mine alone. Trolls, haters and wannabe heroes who want to cause trouble will be dealt with and run the risk of being reported. This post also may contains some spoilers for those who haven't seen the show yet, so you've been warned.

With that said....

I have said this before. Sisterhooves Social set the benchmark for the topic of siblings and family to be covered in the My Little Pony world. It was the first ever episode that I ever watched when I became a brony back in 2011 and it's true ideals and values plus a great story still holds up today.

Seeing Rarity and Sweetie Belle go through the challenges of being sisters reflects my own real world experiences of my younger brother and sister. I won't go into full details on this particular part due to past memories causing my PTSD to flare up, but there isn't another television show, film, book or even theatre production these days that covers the topic of the challenges of being a sibling and how they play a vital role in our day to day lives.

So much so, there are three episodes this season and all of which airing in the month of March, this will cover this particular topic that I call....

But enough about the Sisterhooves Month, let's get into the main details of this post.

It is that time of the weekend once again. Another episode has been put to air and with that, time for the usual post episode write up. This weekend's write up is going to be about the very issue that hits a lot of nerves, the wonderful world of siblings and family and the episode titled Somepony to Watch Over Me does exactly what it describes on the tin.

Before we Begin....

Before I get into how I felt about the episode in general, I would like to say off the record that this episode covered an important topic that is close to me.

I wasn't kind to my siblings when I was younger and this episode had me having to turn the volume down on my headphones at times due to the past memories. I had the same reaction when I watched Sisterhooves Social for the very first time so this was nothing new to me.

Anyway onto the episode itself.

Apple Bloom Gains Independence

The idea of Apple Bloom gaining independence and looking after the farm on her own was a great choice by the new show writer Scott Sonneborn who did a great job on his first time out and really told the story well.

This issue in general reflected my real world struggles with my family and how I fought tooth and nail to become independent myself during my younger years despite being diagnosed with Aspergers/Autism and I would cope being on my own.

They really covered the issue down to a fine point. From Applejack and the Apple family leaving her be and seeing her do the chores and even going as far by showcasing what she could do when her chores were finished. This is how I exactly felt when I started to lead an independent life, the ability to do what you want (providing that it's legal) when you want to do it.

The ability to cook your own meals, do your own washing and even having control over the household TV and playing back pony episodes when the folks are out is such an experience for anyone and see Apple Bloom taking charge and making the most of the situation to the full was a great experience in it's self to see first hand.

The Element of Honesty Goes Crazy!

This episode saw a major change in Applejack's personality although being temporary. The Element of Honesty decided to throw the toys out of the cot and become overprotective of Apple Bloom after several accidents during her first stint of being independent.

We see Applejack go as far has wrapping the furniture in bubble wrap, placing a pillow on the rake and even putting crib sides on Apple Bloom's bed. Not to mention that Applejack also was on her case every five seconds or so and even going as far as checking up on her every 30 seconds.

This was a bit of a change in character who for 30 years and four generations has demonstrated some independence of her very own, but to have all of that thrown out the window in 30 minutes came as quite a shock and had me (without waking the house up) literally telling her to snap out of it and leave Apple Bloom to do her own thing.

Other Honourable Mentions

Last but not least, the Cutie Mark Crusaders (CMC) added for some cute and memorable moments in this episode as always.

Following up from their coming of age episode in Twilight Time, the CMC's especially Sweetie Belle sleeping (Sleepy Belle) and the song number coming to a grinding halt by Scootaloo made for both many Aww and humorous moments during the episode.

Apart from that, there isn't much else to cover this week.

Overall the episode was a great one to watch and being the first of three sibling themed episodes this season, this has set the stage to cover the issue as a whole.

Let be honest with you. I haven't been in the best of spirits as of late. Things have been falling down around my ears, my stress and anxiety levels have been playing up and causing all sorts of havoc and the pressures of being in a news writer role are starting to take their toll.

I've tried my usual fare of relaxation techniques to no avail and the creative juices for this weeks post episode write up are a little low for ideas.

So as with last weeks episode, this post episode write up is going to be short and sweet and might be a little off course from my usual fare. But there is some good news to come out of this, but that's for a later blog post.

Anyway, this morning's episode titled It Ain't Easy Being Breezies lived to it's name despite some fierce opposition from fans who are yet again split down the middle on whether they liked the episode or not and how the episode was portrayed.

Breezies = Cuteness Overload

To sum up my tweet from this morning:

What can I say? The hype and anticipation for this episode was spot on when they promised "cuteness overload" and they were right, everything from Fluttershy to the Breezies really sums up this episode as a whole for me. As I mentioned in my previous entries for this season, Fluttershy has been my favourite pony since day one and despite being under extreme pressure she actually handled the situation well. More on that later.

Anyway I went into the episode knowing nothing about the Breezies or what they do in the world of Equestria, so this was a crash course for me since I didn't watch any of the previous generations of MLP and only knew about the past performances from screenshots on the Bronies Australia forums.

Seeing the Breezies for the very first time produced many a D'Awwww moment throughout. The language they spoke was a guessing game though. Some fans guessed Scottish as their primary language while others guessed German or even Nordic. I was way off the mark when I had to guess what language they spoke as the ear guessed a Scottish accent, but then again I wasn't able to guess the difference between an Australian and New Zealand accent when I was younger watching those compilation clip shows on TV.

Still on the subject of cuteness and D'Awww.....

At this point I would play a certain track from Motorhead with the first word of the tweet, but as always the Hollywood big wigs would rip me and this blog a new one.

But if you haven't yet guessed, yes the Mane 6 took on a new form of their own. They became Breezies themselves and they helped and assisted the others to return to their home. Seeing Fluttershy as a Breezie was one of those moments where I couldn't describe it in words. It was just too darn cute!

Fluttershy Takes Charge

As mentioned previously, this episode also saw Fluttershy at her very best.

Despite being under pressure from the Breezies trying to stay over at her cottage due to their confidence being shot down, Fluttershy really shone in this episode and also seeing her assertive side when took charge of the bees situation was a bit of a mood booster for me.

Speaking of assertiveness and bravery, Fluttershy really made one of the toughest calls in the series so far when she had to tell Seabreeze, the leader of the Breezies and the others that in the words of Jim Reeves that they had to go home.

What happened afterwards was a powerful scene to watch. This culminated in Fluttershy briefly breaking down in tears knowing that she had to break ranks with her everyday self. A quiet, shy and timid mare who wouldn't hurt a creature had to take charge and show some initiative was something new for me to see.

Sure we have seen Fluttershy take on dragons and make them cry, but to see her making a gutsy call to tell the Breezies to leave and then for her to start sobbing at the door broke my heart just a little.

"Sniffle" Tissue please....

In Conclusion

Apart from that, there isn't much else to cover this week. This episode for me was a 50/50, but it learned towards an emotionally charged and cute one to watch.

On a final note, it seems poor Spike has been on the short end of the stick as of late.

Seriously, a trusty assistant of Twilight Sparkle has been coping a lot of heat as of late during this season and I think this episode might have been the breaking point for him. Why are they doing this?! Give the little guy a break!

If you push him to the breaking point, he will start crying his eyes out due to the pressure!

Now if you can excuse me, I have a dragon to cuddle and calm down!

Teach Your Fillies Well (Twilight Time)

The Cutie Mark Crusaders. (CMC) Apple Bloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle plus Babs Seed representing the Manehattan division.

Who can't say no to three cute fillies who are trying to find their special talent no matter the weather, conditions or risks involved? Ever since that fateful day at Diamond Tiara's cute-ceañera party in season one where the group was finally incorporated and formed, we have seen them try almost everything in the book to get their cutie marks. Some dangerous, others fun.

Ever since that day, we have seen the CMC grow, evolve and mature into more than a group and eventually becoming part of the Equestrian landscape and with each passing season, we have seen them grow and mature as well.

So when the new episode titled "Twilight Time" which went to air this morning to yet another 50/50 reaction from the fans, this not only provided us with many a Aww moment but also a coming of age for these three fillies.

Although this week's quick write up is a bit short in terms of content, the above tweets are really summing up how I feel about the episode when it went to air this morning.

For those who aren't in the loop, the episode Twilight Time focuses on the Cutie Mark Crusaders as they learn and master several skills under the guidance of Twilight Sparkle. This however doesn't last long as Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon call the CMC's out and with a exchange of words they decide to take advantage of Twilight's fame as a princess to become popular at school.

When I first heard about the episode when the synopsis and title were released a while back, I thought it was going to be a time travelling episode where the CMC's would use the potion to turn back the clock and cause chaos (time paradox), but after watching the first few minutes and seeing Sweetie Belle and her fellow friends under the guidance of Twilight and learning some new skills really made me proud for some reason.

Sweetie Belle and the CMC's, Leading the Way

Seeing Twilight in a new role as a teacher and a mentor to the CMC really brought the best out in all of them during this episode. Apple Bloom had a go at potion making, Scootaloo trying her hand (or hoof) at repair work and Sweetie Belle mastering and learning the art of unicorn magic just like her older sister Rarity.

Speaking of Sweetie in a honourable mention, she was able manage the situation with Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon in a calm and collective manner. Normally she would be hysterical and following in Rarity's hoofsteps to the point of no tomorrow, but the way she handled the situation during the entire episode really brought a new side to her.

One in which I've never seen before.

When I saw Sweetie practising her magic and using her horn, I immediately thought of how Rarity would be feeling at that point in the episode and knowing her little sister, despite the fair share of pain and frustration she had to go through is finally making a mark in her life.

Think about it, when Sweetie first debuted back in season one in Call of the Cutie, she was annoying to some fans due to the high voice cracks and other treats and goodies that she threw to prove a point.

By season two and three, Sweetie had evolved and grown herself to take charge and lead a situation even it meant fighting with Rarity and even breaking away from her family for only a brief period in Sisterhooves Social or being bullied to the point of tears by Babs in One Bad Apple. Fast forward to this season, we have seen her pull off some amazing feats including pulling Scootaloo out of the depths of despair when all was lost in Flight to the Finish.

I can easily relate to Sweetie Belle and how she has to deal with situations like the above on a day to day basis, especially when it comes to siblings and family matters.

In Conclusion

Apart from that, there isn't much else to say as the episode itself told the story as a whole. Although the episode lacked some musical numbers and the usual fare, the story by Dave Polsky really brought the best in the CMC and ranks pretty high in my books in regards to episode involving them.

Just One More Thing....

Still on the subject, I'm feeling a major sense of pride right now for the CMC. True and honest.

For all three fillies (plus Babs) who from the start of the series from humble beginnings at Diamond Tiara's cute-ceañera party, they have tried and tried endlessly to find their special talent and had their fair share of hard knocks, sisterly fights, run ins with Diamond and Silver and even pulling off the impossible in the form of carrying the flag for Ponyville at the Equestria Games.

We have shed a tear or two for them, we have cheered for them and now with them learning new skills and mastering them, I've got a good feeling that despite the series going for an extra five years that the CMC's will continue to grow and mature to the point that one day they will finally find their special talent and obtain their cutie mark goal.

With two more CMC character focused episodes in the form of Apple Bloom's "Somepony to Watch Over Me" and Sweetie Belle's "For Whom the Sweetie Bells Toils" left to air, I've got a good feeling that we are in for more adventures sooner than you think.

The Angelic Voice of an Angel (Filli Vanilli)

The main story of this episode involves Fluttershy, who is hosting a fundraising event for animal care decides to enlist in the services of the Ponytones who are a musical quartet group made up of Rarity, Big Mac and two other ponies hired to perform at the function. When one of the performers loses their voice due to a turkey calling contest, Fluttershy takes drastic measures to ensure the show goes on.

Now in case you are wondering, the Ponytones are a play on word of Australia's very own Delltones who for those aren't in the loop are a rock and roll band who were very famous in the 70's and 80's. The Ponytones in this case aren't actually rock and roll performers but a singing group like a barber shop quartet or mini choir, and they are really good as per this tweet below:

The Action

Anyway, on to the thoughts of the episode itself.

First off, hearing Big Mac sing for the very first time was a neat bonus as he is most commonly known that he doesn't have much to say other than "Yep" and "Nope" when he speaks.

This episode also saw the return of Flutterguy (poisoned joked Fluttershy with a deep voice) from the first season episode Bridle Gossip which provided the backing tracks for Big Mac when he lost his voice and this also provided the outstanding musical performances in the episode including a toe tapping and catchy song number.

A Heartbroken Mare

Another part of the episode which also struck a chord with fans is the reference to season two episode Hurricane Fluttershy when she was exposed during one of the performances and her anxiety kicked in resulting in her running from the stage in tears.

Seeing Fluttershy being upset, especially towards the end where Pinkie pushed her to the emotional limits got me a bit teary. I know what it's like to be pushed to the limit and have my anxiety and stress levels tested to the breaking point and eventually breaking down in tears, so I can easily relate to Fluttershy's situation as a whole.

But in the end, Fluttershy overcame the odds and she sang proudly with her new Ponytones outfit and performing on stage, and for the record, this part of the episode got me a bit teary knowing that she finally did it and overcame the odds once again.

Just as a side note before we finish up, during the last four years since the series debuted back in 2010, Fluttershy has been taken through an emotional rollercoaster ride as she tries to overcome her fears and the painful past that she had to endure. We have seen her overcome her shyness in the way that now she can be outgoing and being social with her friends.

We have seen her build self confidence and take on big dragons to the point where she made them cry. We have seen her overcome her childhood fears and bullying in Hurricane Fluttershy and in a last ditch effort when all was lost to comeback from the painful path of despair and help her fillyhood friend Rainbow Dash and the other Ponyville pegasi get the water from the reservoir to Cloudsdale.

All of these things make Fluttershy what she is and this episode shows why.

In Conclusion

Apart from that, this episode is a high ranking one in my books. It has been a while since a single episode centred around Fluttershy has been done and when this went to air this morning, it did not disappoint.

Also as an honourable mention, the story was also well written and the lesson at the end was also a nice touch.

The Cutie Mark Crusaders have the centre stage next week and by the looks of things, the CMC, especially Apple Bloom are about to shine once again.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (or in common terms, a corporate wishlist)

I would like to take a few minutes of your time to tell you about something that could affect your everyday life.

Imagine one day that you are unable to access your favourite website? The one that you get your news about the fandom from is suddenly shut down and its domain name has been seized and taken over by the government.

Or you pay top dollar for a pony plushie that you really want commissioned only to find out it has been seized by customs due to parallel import ban in force by the copyright holder and as a result, you are hit with a lawsuit trying to defend your rights and forced into bankruptcy for the rest of your life.

Or when your favourite video website suddenly plugs up a circumvention method to access region restricted videos:

These scenarios may be a bit far-fetched, but they could be become reality if a secretive trade agreement comes into force.

That agreement is the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a proposed trade agreement (or super treaty) between 12 nations. Those twelve nations include the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, Peru, Singapore, Vietnam, Mexico, Canada and Japan and also Taiwan and South Korea have also joined the negotiations.

At the moment the agreement is being close to being finalised, signed and ratified and this has raised alarm bells with protests and initiatives such as “The Day We Fight Back” in protesting the agreement as a whole.

There has also been some major concerns about the content involved in the treaty and with it being discussed behind closed doors with absolutely no to little interaction or room to provide feedback between the general public and the negotiating parties, this has made getting the message out to the everyday person very difficult.

They might not even know about it as a whole due to not getting a single mention on the TV news or in the newspapers, especially the ones owned by Uncle Rupert and his News Corpse organisation.

That's where we come in.

What We Value

If you are part of a fandom such as the brony community, the TPP will have severe repercussions in the long run.

The TPP aims to provide free trade in these countries, but in the process, trading away or abolishing some of the elements that the fandom takes for granted.

Some of these elements include:

* The ability to produce non-commercial fan works such as plushies, custom figurines, artwork and fan fiction without fears of persecution or unfair censorship of parody or satire.

* The ability to import for personal use, content such as DVD boxsets and books from the US and other countries.

* The ability to watch or download the show live or at our own pace and at the same time as it's US airings for private home use without having the local broadcaster or lobby groups such as AFACT shoving their opinions down the throats of fans.

These three things may sound like overkill to the everyday person, but these points are the way of the future.

What We Stand to Lose

TPP will bring those to a stop by introducing strict copyright enforcement measures including:

* Stopping legitimate parallel imports at the border at the content producers request and enforce tough penalties such as jail (gaol) time and fines that will force the everyday person into bankruptcy for many years and force them into homelessness.

* Extending the copyright terms up to 100 years and more locking out the potential for fair use or fair dealing of content.

* Internet Service Providers will be asked to become "copyright cops" and actively monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic and at the receipt of a notice from a rights holder or anti-piracy agency, suspend or cancel the account holder’s internet services.

* Make geo dodging, including the use of a VPN or SmartDNS to access other countries content and stores (e.g US iTunes) illegal and make those locks harder to break.

* Ignore fair use and fair dealing in determining disputes over web videos and taking them down without any recourse of appeal. An example of this is when Friendship is Witchcraft and Digibrony became victims of YouTube’s copyright filter and had their videos pulled without any appeal options.

In Conclusion

TPP will affect everyone. You. Me. Everyone.

The brony fandom has seen it all over the last three years in terms of the existing laws being broken. From the Ponyarchive dramas to the YouTube video crackdowns and the Fighting is Magic C&D dramas which caused the "Black Saturday" effect.

If action is not taken soon, more incidents like this will happen. Luckily though, the US Senate has blocked for the time being the "fast track" component of the TPP which if it would have passed ensured the agreement would be ratified without any debate or modifications.

TPP is designed to make life a living hell. Hollywood has tried to get a major stranglehold on the internet before with laws such as SOPA, PIPA and ACTA and all of those methods have failed. Even a proposed ITU treaty was shot down. For them, this is their last chance to get any control on the internet that we come to know.

Only you have the power to tell the governments involved to "Stop the Trap" before it's too late.
