Ska opened The Container in August. The Container takes the form of two industrial shipping containers attached to the south side of Ska’s brewery, 225 Girard St. in Bodo Industrial Park. The bottom container serves as the kitchen and walk-in cooler, with one side open to the indoor tasting room and the other facing the outdoor beer garden. The top container, equivalent to the brewery’s second floor, provides seating exposed to the elements.

Multi Shipping Container Home, - Atira Women’s Resource, - Alexander Street, Vancouver, Canada,

An affordable housing complex built from a dozen old shipping containers was unveiled in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

The 12 shipping containers on Alexander Street near Jackson Avenue have been converted into apartments by the Atira Women's Resource Society, which bought a lot on the block in 2009. The first shipping container was dropped on the lot at the end of November, and each unit cost $82,500 to build.

The 320-square-foot containers have been stacked three high and feature 290 square feet of living space. Each unit has its own private bathroom, kitchen and in-suite laundry. The homes also have floor-to-ceiling windows, and each floor is linked by an external staircase.

12 Shipping Container Home, - Caterpillar Residence, - Lo Barnechea, Santiago de, Chile,

Santiago Dramatically backs up to the Andes Mountains, and a growing number of affluent residents are heading for the foothills in search of fresh air and green space. To limit urban sprawl, no construction is permitted above 1,000 meters. Naturally, That benchmark has Become a desirable location, and the local architect Sebastian Irarrázaval has joined other architects in building houses That respond to the challenging topography. His latest, constructed out of shipping containers, has been dubbed the Caterpillar House (House Track), for the way its elongated volumes tilt up and down the steeply sloping site.
The house uses raw steel and exposed concrete in the same direct way Irarrázaval employed them for a design school I built in 2010, at Chile's Pontifical Catholic University. "I want to do That buildings are simple and strong," I Explains. I Became fascinated With The structural potential of shipping containers When I designed a pavilion for the Chilean Biennale in 2000. For the event, I have containers stacked four high and cut away the fronts to frame various architectural exhibits. Since then, I've developed the concept on a smaller scale with two houses. Caterpillar House, though, carries the notion much Further by utilizing 12 containers in a richly varied composition where every room is open to light and air.

4D and A Architects have been working with New Jerusalem to initiate a range of new housing volumes with accommodation for twelve children and one housemother per abode, and two houses sharing communal kitchen, dining, lounge and laundry facilities. After considering various alternatives, it was decided that the most lucrative approach was to utilise recycled shipping containers to construct these residential dwellings as the cost was estimated at R1.5million (€145,000) - 25% of the traditional brick and mortar home.

2x 40ft Shipping Container Home, - Sarah House Project, - Glendale, Salt Lake City, Utah

The Sarah House Project is a mostly one-man effort to build a small home out of two 8 by 40-foot shipping containers.
Jeffrey White is adding something new to the mix. Something unexpectedly stylish. Shipping containers.
White's house is 672 square feet.
White estimates the cost of the project, including the land, at $108,000 - $115,000. This, he says, is close to the cost of a conventional home and is higher than he expected, but White hopes he'll be able to bring those numbers down in future.
"I would love this house to come somewhere in the $60,000 - $75,000 range," White said.
The Crossroads Urban Center will eventually sell the home to a low-income single or couple

40ft Shipping Container School, - LaunchPads, Infinite Family, - Johannesburg, South Africa,

Perkins+Will, in collaboration with Atelier Ten, volunteered their time to design the first environmentally sustainable mentoring module. Called LaunchPad, it uses a repurposed shipping container for the Infinite Family initiative in Sub-Saharan Africa where millions of children grow up without the influence of adults. Amy Stokes, the program’s founder, wants to change this.
Infinite Family’s first LaunchPad mentoring lab opened in August 2012, in Alexandra township, north of Johannesburg. Their plan is to open one hundred LaunchPads over the next five years, serving more than 11,000 children. Rendering courtesy Perkins+Will.
The first LaunchPad in Alexandra is made out of a 40 ft shipping container and was designed to be safe, secure, energy-efficient, self-sustaining, and as environmentally sensitive as possible. A wall of recycled water bottles serves as thermal mass to provide cooling inside. A solar canopy on top provides shade in order to reduce heat gain and windows are strategically placed in locations that respond to site conditions for optimum orientation to the sun and prevailing breezes, which provide natural daylight and ventilation. Inside, the space is divided into open areas and cellular spaces for different activities. The container is also equipped with a photovoltaic system and battery backup to make sure the laboratory can operate on its own if the grid goes down

Multi Shipping Container Home - The Hampton's, New York, - Summer House,

This 17,000 sq. ft. (1.600 m2) villa is located in a privileged area in the South-Hamptons with the sea surrounding the plot on two 2 different sides. The house belongs to a couple who uses the house during the summer with their relatives and friends. The family’s passion for boats inspires the way the house gets integrated with the site as well as the seascape.

The impressive views of the surroundings as well the outdoor activities are also main factors for the final massing of the villa. The separation of the diverse activities happening in the house as well as the flexibility required for multiple events create the relationship among the different area of the villa: the house grows from the center like a Swiss-knife with parts that contain different spaces and programs yet can be used all combined.

Besides being more ecological and more quickly constructed, the total cost per square meter is 20 percent cheaper than traditional construction methods.
Developed by the Paraná-based company Delta Containers and designed by architect Danilo Corbas, the house consists of six 40 square-meter “High Cube” type shipping containers, each measuring 12 meters long by 2.90 meters high. They were then modified at the company headquarters in Campo Largo to include windows and doors, and finally unloaded by crane into correct position for installation.

Kathy Tafel, KTainer, - California - 4 Shipping Container Home

2013-01-09T14:44:00.000-08:00

Kathy Tafel, KTainer, - California - 4 Shipping Container Home

I like the 24' length. It divides into spaces really easily - in half, thirds, fourths, sixths, and twelfths. A 20' container naturally divides in half, fourths, fifths, and tenths. I really like harmonic thirds. Having the high cube means 9' 6" ceilings. Many homes only have 8' ceilings in places.

Putting the four together, half the space is public, half private. The public half are two containers next to each other for living, kitchen, and dining. The private half are stacked on top of each other, for bedroom, half-bath, study and guest sleeping. The two sections are joined together with an 8 foot overlap, or, in thirds.

The long side of the house is then 40' long, and 24' wide, a nice 3/5 ratio. The long side of the house will face north-south, the short side east-west, for maximum passive solar optimization. Also the tall side of the house shades the living quarters for the better part of the morning.
