Okay, I am protecting everybody's hair in my household.... Just kidding. But not really. Like stated in a previous post, the scorching heat can be damaging to hair, so our hair is being protected during this summer season.

I only used 1.5 packs of hair as I did not make a lot of braids. I used the braiding method at the root because that is easier for me.

I curled the ends by wrapping strands of marley hair around a bunch of twists using the corkscrew method, dipped the ends in hot water and cut of the excess.

I now only keep extensions for a month as water will not be touching those babies. I will be using the same regimen that I am using. Check here for the regimen if you missed that post.

I am keeping my regimen very simple. I washed my previous extensions every two weeks, however, I am trying something new this time around. Since, I am only keeping these Marley twists for a month only, They will not be washed in the tradition way (wetting them and washing with either shampoo or conditioner). The reason is that water tangles up my natural hair so badly, that I end up with some breakage. Remember that hair sheds every day, and imagine having all that hair (50 to 100 per day multiplied by 28 days). That is a lot of hair meshed together, on my fine hair.

No wonder, I have breakage taking extensions out. It is not as bad as it sounds. I am usually very careful. The breakage is minimal but it still exists. My goal is to eradicate breakage completely when taking extensions out. After all, the purpose of installing extensions in the first place is to protect my hair.

So,now that I have expressed my reasons for a new regimen, here it goes:

Cleansing: I clean my scalp three times a week after doing my 6 mile run and working out. I use Diluted Apple Cider vinegar with a few drops of Tea Tree oil to clean my scalp. I usually use a cotton pad for this process. This really gets the dirt off my scalp.

Please ignore the Aloe Vera juice in the picture above. I meant to add water. I don't use Aloe Vera juice for cleansing. I use it to moisturize my hair.

Moisturizing: I spritz my twists with a mix of Aloe vera juice, Shea moisture Yucca and Aloe Volumizing conditioner ( I use it for the protein content, which is strengthening), and Tea Tree oil.

Sealing: Then I seal with a mix of Castor and Coconut oil. I also massage my scalp with the same oil mix.

That is it! I will be doing this for the next three weeks since I have gotten one week in already.

This is an experiment to determine what regimen is best for me when wearing extensions. I will do an updated post on the outcome.

Well today, I rocked a High Bun with my long Marley Twists. I was already getting annoyed by the long hair so I have been wearing variations of the bun

I think I will be wearing this for the whole week. Before putting my twists in a bun, I cleaned my scalp and moisturized the twists. My hair is still damp from last night.I see why people say they retain moisture better when their hair is in a bun. I find that to be very true. It is a good thing as I don't have to moisturize my hair frequently.
Hola Chicas,
Hope you had a great weekend. If you follow me on Instagram, you would have seen these pictures already. I decided to put my hair in Marley twists for the next one month. It's just time to do a long-term protective style. My hair has been out of those for six months now. Most likely, I will be doing variations of long-term protective styles throughout the summer to protect my hair from the scorching heat.
I can't still believe I did these. I am not sure if you remember from this post, last year, when I complained about not being able to add extensions to my hair and having no choice but to depend on professional braiders. If you have been following me then you would know that, I have gotten quite comfortable with adding extensions to my hair since this post. I only needed to find the energy to install looooong twists or braids.
I was interested in the HavanaTwists at first because of the big parts but then I realized that Havana Twists are just too heavy for my fine hair. I still was able to part my hair big and got a full look. I used Vienna Marly hair from Sally's Beauty Supply store. They are very light, soft and not bulky at all, so I ended up using six packs. The hair does not tangle and it is sooo easy to use. They do not unravel like the Marley hair sold at the regulat local beauty supply stores.

It took me 10 hours to complete my hair. They are very long, reaching my waist. I plan on keeping them for four weeks. Stay tuned for my regimen.

Okay, so I had not set my twists on rods in like three years. My hair was much shorter when I did. I have been loving roller setting these days and decided to use rods, even though I knew my hair would appear much shorter. I just wanted a different look.

I set my medium-sized twists on the rods of the size shown above. My hair was clarified, hennaed, deep conditioned and moisturized before setting my hair. I used the Shea moisture Yucca line to condition and moisturize my hair.. I then applied OBIA Curl enhancing custard to my ends for a more defined look.

I let my hair air-dry overnight and untwisted the next day. I did more separation with this set as my curls were tighter and had no body. I pinned up the back because I wanted that look.

If you have never tried bentonite clay mixed with Bragg's organic Apple Cider Vinegar, you are missing out big time.

Every time I use this mix, my hair is left soft, shiny and curly. Moreover, my hair and scalp feels so clean. I usually add a few drops of Tea Tree oil to treat any scalp issues ( I don't think I have any but just in case).

I do this treatment once a month on my hair but I try to use the same mix on my face more frequently.

As you can see in the picture, I make the mix very thick. I do not use water because I want my mix to be as acidic as possible. This acidity, I believe is the reason my hair is shiny and curly afterwards.

I usually follow this treatment with Henna. I believe that my hair is clarified and "open" to receive treatment at this point.

For maximum effect, I always cover my hair with a plastic cap for about 15 minutes, before rinsing it out. And just before I rinse it out, I use my finger pads to clean my scalp and squeeze the clay down my hair.

I tried the commercial clarifiers in the past but did not have any success with them. They shrank up my hair and got it tangled.

What about you? Do you clarify your hair?
Have you tried Bentonite Clay and if you did, did it work for you?

I am still wearing my loose finger coils that look so much like a wash and go. I have not used any water spritz since I started wearing this style. I know my hair strands would start tangling around one another if I did. I have been using As I Am Moisture Milk and Shea moisture Yucca and Aloe milk to moisturize my hair ever two to three days. Like I mentioned in a previous post, this is going to be a regular style. With this style, there is no daily manipulation, except for when I pat down some moisturizer on my ends. I have not experienced any dryness and breakage because the coils are clumped together.

In the near future, I may cut the coils bigger just for a different look. I that case I may have to start with a gel. I guess those would be a little tighter then .
This style accidentally came to be during a product testing. I had had my hair finger-coiled professionally in the past but never by myself. I love it!
I don't know why I never tried it before now. I think it is going to be a regular style. It kind if reminds me of WnG without the breakage from single strand knots. I did them kind of loose by not using gel because I wanted the loose coils. Each section finger-coiled is stretched, so there is no room for single strand knots.

My hair was deep conditioned and well moisturized before styling it. So I will not be moisturizing daily. If I feel any dryness, I plan on using some moisture milk on the ends, with patting motions, so as not to disturb my curls.

I have not figured out a night time routine yet for this style but will post an update when I do.

The result? Frizzy hair.

This is when it was freshly done. She wore the style with the ends out for a week.

However, I had planned on keeping that style for at least two weeks and I am still on it.

I simply sprayed her hair with a moisturizing spray and dabbed some oil on the surface with patting motions. I then braided the ends on each side, crisscrossed the two big ends and pinned them down with the accessories. The most important thing done to eliminate those frizzes was tying down her hair with a scarf for about 20 minutes. This can be done overnight too.

I love my second day hair;so much more stretched and still defined. Again, I used As I am products, only this time, the products I used were fantastic. I am not saying much about the review of these products as I plan to do a full video review.

So I decided to wear this for the entire week. I only re-twist at bedtime and there is really no need for daily moisturizing as the product I used does a fantastic job.

Okay, I did not want to mention anything about As I am Products as I plan on doing a full review soon. But I am going to let you in on their "Curly jelly". It was horrible. I only used it once and thank God I was able to return it. There are so many bad reviews about this product, particularly, the fact that it flakes so much. I was not heavy-handed with the product and my hair was well moisturized before I used it. I really loved the curls from the straw set but will never use that curly jelly again. I had to wash my hair the next day.
This is what we have for the next two weeks. Her hair is thriving. It is so exciting because we started with no hair. Her hair is so fine and delicate, which is the reason for keeping her hair in protective styles constantly.

As always, I twisted the ends of the cornrows and had the ends curled with rollers.

I don't like to use accessories in her hair too often because they can be damaging to her fragile ends. But I think this is nice with or without accessory.
One of the things I have been trying to do lately is enjoy my journey. That includes trying out different styles. I am very happy that I have been able to do that in the recent months.

So this weekend, I twisted my hair with "As I Am" twisting butter as I am testing out the product. I set my twists on magnetic rollers and my hair got dried overnight.

My hair was completely dry the next morning. The twists were easy to remove
as they were stretched. I really loved it. Not only is it pretty(I think it is) but it is safe for natural hair, and especially fine hair in my case. My ends were tangle free as they were well stretched. My hair felt and still feels soft. This is not what I experience with the traditional twist-out. I definitely prefer rolled twists due to the fact that my hair is not tangled and my ends do not feel stiff as they would with a normal twist-out

I really

I have not done a review yet on this product yet but I am sure you have an idea this is not going to be a keeper.

I had to Cowash my hair the next day. I had planned to wear that straw set for a week but since that is not the case, I had no idea what to do with my hair. I started to put a French Braid on one side of my head, then I decided to put single two strand twists on the other side of my head. In no time, a protective style was "born" LOL!!!
I just read an article on The Natural Haven about this topic. It really is something that I have thought about but never gave in to, as I thought that my hair could only survive on Daily moisturizing. I don't think that is true for someone like me that experiences a lot of shrinkage. With shrinkage comes tangles, breakage and you know the rest, progress retardation.

I used to wear mini twists and mini braids (at the time, anything mini was what made my hair look somewhat full)
a lot and experienced breakage as my hair got ridiculously matted from excessive moisturizing.

my hair in 2009. This was when I retained length the most and at the fastest rate. I remember only moisturizing my hair once a week or even less often. Tangles and knots were far away from because my hair was always stretched

I remember early in my journey, when I had my hair colored, as seen in the picture above, I hardly moisturized my hair everyday, and I retained length better then. But as time went on, I think I abused my hair with excessive moisturizing leading to breakage as shown in the picture below. This was in 2010. The picture above was in 2009

this was in 2010, you can see how much length I lost. I used to moisturize my hair like crazy because I believed that the color was drying my hair out. I needed moisture but it was an overkill!!!

I still retain length but at a slower rate.I still experience breakage, and I noticed that happens, when I am taking out my protective style that had been seriously moisturized and have caused my hair to be matted. It is really not necessary to moisturize daily , if my hair is properly moisturized on wash day. The only time I need extra moisture is when my hair is being manipulated such as when styling my hair and when taking out the style.

What is written in this article and other things you have learned about natural hair are not written in stone. You have to pay attention to your hair needs. The main point in this article is that, if you experience a lot of shrinkage, which brings tangles, you should consider moisturizing your hair less. Water is good for our hair but excessive water will make our hair mesh together, get tangled and break. I know that is the case for my hair. I hope you read the article HERE, and please come back and share your thoughts!

Happy belated Mother's Day to all my readers that are moms. I hope you had a wonderful day.

So for this special day, I decided to do something unusual for my hair. Straw sets or any wet set for that matter is unusual for me. It just takes a lot of time and patience to set my hair. But I did not mind going through the hassle. I only get this ambitious about every other year.

I also have been trying out a new line called "As I Am". I used almost the entire line to achieve this style. The styler and last product applied is their "Curly Jelly". Stay tuned for my review on these products.

I had 125 straw sets and the process was 4.5 hr long. It was my first one so I chose small straws which I believed was appropriate for fine hair.

I did so many because I wanted to avoid frizz as much as possible. The less hair you pack on the straws, the less frizz you have.

I liked the end result except for one little problem. I had flakes which I tried to remove as much as I could. I definitely will not be using that product again, at least for a straw set.

Also, due to the flakes, I only wore this style for a day. I think I will try this again in the near future with another product.

Please bear with me.You know I do not usually come here and sound off in this manner. However, I am so pissed off as I went on Facebook to find my picture being ridiculed by a website that is supposed to be providing a wealth of information to naturals and transitioners.

On Instagram, I posted both pictures of my bun with and without extensions, do you know that this website called "Transitioning to Natural" on Facebook posted my picture on their timeline asking people to comment "Yes" or "No" to my picture. Honestly, I had to wonder what their intentions were. I thank God for bringing me this far in my journey, because there was a time that I detested my hair and wore weaves all the time. I have grown so much and learned to love my natural self. On top of that, I work with what I have, which is fine hair. I read so many negative comments today about my hairstlyle that I almost got hurt, but I did not. I realize that a lot of the people commenting are very shallow as evidenced by comments like "I like bigger hair".

I do know that this is not some glam style, I would not wear it to a wedding but I am comfortable wearing it daily . I really do not need to explain myself. A lot of people that follow me have fine hair and I try to inspire them to nurture their fine natural hair.

Anyway, I reported them to Facebook and they have taken down my picture. And I am still rocking my Bun that I love so much.
Hello Everyone, I hope you had a nice weekend. So I changed up the look of my threaded plaits by making the bun bigger. . I used some braiding hair to achieve this look.. It is so easy to maintain and I love the fact that my hair is not being manipulated at at all. I hope this lasts till saturday.

I am getting serious about protective styling again. I threaded my hair in 20 sections using the spiral technique. This technique, in my opinion, keeps my hair stretched and gives the "twist" look. I have always loved to wear my hair in a bun, so I went for it using these plaits.

I know the bun is pretty small but I just wanted to be comfortable with just my hair, so I did not add any extra hair to make my bun bigger.

To protect my edges, I actually started these braids with an actual braid. If one is not careful, threading can do some damages to one's edges.

However, it helps protect the hair a great deal. You can also control the length by making the plaits longer or shorter. Since I cannot leave them out because of the way I finish the ends, I always style these kind of plaits into an updo.

Have you tried threading?

Hey everyone,
My computer was infected with all kind of virus hence the recent lack of posts.

So in my last post I showed the picture of my two strand twists, shown below. I wore them for 10 days and the picture above is the resultant twist out.

sorry about the quality of this picture.

I have found out that it is unnecessary to separate twist out unless you want a voluminous Afro, as shown on the left side. To be quite honest, further separation only results in more manipulation and breakage. I have found that to be so through experience. So I just untwist and leave the hair as it is.

I actually love both looks but the first one is safer for my hair. Believe me, my hair is just that fragile. I also like the fact that the first one lasts much longer. They are just like twists if you do not manipulate them.

So which one do you prefer and how do you achieve your twist out?
