The Nokia Lumia 920 takes its role as Windows Phone's "flagship" seriously: It feels like it's the size of an aircraft carrier. If you're willing to put up with a huge chunk of smartphone in your pocket, though, you'll get the best performance Windows Phone 8 has to offer, along with important, exclusive apps that really enhance the phone's experience. The handset is priced at $450 off-contract with AT&T in the US, with the UK price still to be confirmed. Given a direct conversion, $450 would be £280 in our money, but needless to say the Lumia 920 won't be anything like that cheap over here, with it likely to weigh in around the £450 mark in fact.

Physical design

Whether you like big phones is a personal choice, and while the Lumia 920 is too big for me, it might not be too big for you. At any rate, the Lumia 920 is built like a tank. Its main body is a thick block of polycarbonate with rolled edges and a 4.5in Gorilla Glass screen on the front.

The headphone jack is at the top centre of the phone; the micro USB jack is at the bottom centre. There's no memory card slot, and the battery is sealed in. The right side hosts the Volume, Power, and Camera buttons. They're all prominent and easy to press, although I kept confusing the Power and Camera buttons.

Nokia offers plenty of colour options, namely red, white, blue, yellow, grey and black. The red and yellow are both very aggressive and glossy, like an Italian sports car. The blue is bright, but less exclamatory. The black is matte, as is the grey, and the white is glossy and sleek. Of the bunch, I like the white and blue best. Too many phones are black, and the red and yellow are just bright enough to be divisive.
At 70 x 10 x 130mm (WxDxH), and weighing 185 grams, the Lumia 920 is the biggest, heaviest phone in its class. It's even heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Note II "phablet." While the Lumia 920 feels solid as a rock, it also weighs your pocket down like a stone.
You get a smaller screen here than on competing Android phones of the same size (4.5 versus 4.7in), but the 920's display is absolutely gorgeous. Nokia has loaded it down with meaningless buzz-words like "PureMotion" and "ClearBlack," but what we have here is a 1,280 x 768-pixel, IPS LCD panel with intensely deep blacks and super-saturated colours. It's higher density than the Apple iPhone 5's screen, at 331 pixels per inch to the iPhone's 325, and it's very bright. Sit the Lumia 920 next to the 4.3in HTC 8X, and the 8X looks a little dim and washed out. The bigger screen also makes Windows Phone's somewhat picky touch keyboard a lot more usable; I experienced noticeably fewer typos on the Lumia 920 than I did when reviewing the HTC 8X (look out for the finished review of HTC's Windows Phone 8 handset tomorrow).
With seemingly no concerns about weight, Nokia threw a 2000mAh battery into the 920's sealed case. I got 9 hours and 56 minutes of 3G talk time, which is very good, and just under four hours of streaming YouTube video on high screen brightness, which is average for high-end smartphones. In comparison, the HTC 8X had less talk time, but more streaming video time thanks to its smaller screen.
One of the Lumia's stand-out features is wireless charging, which Nokia talks about with great enthusiasm, but which various manufacturers have been trying to promote for years with little success. Wireless charging isn't completely wireless, of course: A charging pad still needs to be plugged into an outlet, but you don't need to plug anything into the actual phone itself.
Although the Lumia 920 doesn't have a memory card slot, it does have 32GB of built-in storage, more than any of the competing first-round Windows Phone 8 models.

Phone calls and Internet

The Lumia 920's voice call quality here is good, and better than I found with the HTC 8X. The earpiece and speakerphone are louder, and there's a ton of side-tone, preventing you from yelling into the phone.
The phone had no problem pairing with a Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth headset and triggering Microsoft's voice commands from the headset. The voice command software, however, isn't great. It dials the phone just fine, but freeform queries like "how's the weather?" generate web searches rather than direct answers.
The Lumia 920 supports an insane number of frequency bands, making it able to connect to global HSPA+ and LTE networks – and it's compatible with EE's new 4G LTE network, with EE poised to start selling the 920 imminently. That will see some pretty nippy surfing speeds for Lumia owners on LTE, certainly if Riyad's experience with the Samsung Galaxy Note II is anything to go by.
The Lumia 920 also supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, GPS, and NFC. It can also be used as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five devices.

Apps and maps

The Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X both use the same 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 Krait processor. On cross-platform benchmark Antutu, the Lumia 920 performed similarly to the top echelon of Android phones. On web browser benchmarks, it showed the characteristics of Microsoft's Internet Explorer 10: Surprisingly slow Browsermark scores, fast Sunspider Javascript scores, and great Guimark HTML5 gaming scores. In my experience, that means pages appeared to start rendering more slowly than on competing Android phones, but once pages were rendered, they scrolled smoothly and interactive elements responded quickly.
For the ins and outs of the platform itself, read our Windows Phone 8 review. The difference in performance between Windows Phone devices is more about the included apps, and here Nokia has an edge. Nokia Maps, Drive, and Transport are a very big deal. Microsoft's Bing Maps isn't nearly up to the quality of Google Maps on Android. It has no turn-by-turn, voice-guided navigation, no transit directions, and a limited points of interest database with, in my neighbourhood, a lot of inaccuracies.

Has Apple lost its mojo with the iPad mini and iPad 4?

Crank your reality distortion fields up to 11, folks: Over the last weekend, which saw the release of the iPad 4 and iPad mini, Apple says it sold “three million iPads.” Yes, iPads in general.
How many iPad minis did Apple sell over the weekend? No idea. How many fourth-generation iPads did Apple sell? No idea. More worryingly, did Apple also include the sales of iPad 2 and 3, and refurbished iPads in that figure? No idea.

All we know is that Apple sold three million iPads over a three day period – which is impressive in general terms, but fairly underwhelming in the Appleverse. Perhaps there’s an underlying trend here, too: Apple sold five million iPhone 5s during its opening weekend in September – a massive figure, but it was actually well short of analyst expectations. (Samsung’s Galaxy S III, by comparison, clocked up nine million pre-orders – by far the fastest-selling smartphone of all time).
After four or five months of solid growth, Apple (AAPL) stock has been trending downwards for the last six weeks. Since the launch of the iPhone 5, Apple has dropped from a market capitalisation of $700 billion (£440 billion) to $580 billion (£360 billion) this week. You have to wonder why Apple didn’t release specific figures for both the iPad mini and iPad 4. Presumably, one of the tablets had a weaker launch than expected – or, if Apple really massaged the figures to include the sales of other new and refurbished iPads, then maybe both new models put in a lacklustre performance.
What would Apple consider to be “lacklustre,” though? Asus recently reported that it sold almost one million Google Nexus 7 tablets in October. In true Amazon fashion, we have absolutely no idea how many Kindle Fire HD tablets have sold, but it’s unlikely to be more than one or two million per month. So are we to assume that the iPad mini sold just a few hundred thousand units on its opening weekend, thus causing a little embarrassment in Cupertino?
Or was it the fourth-generation iPad that failed to spark consumer interest? With the same display, chassis, no standout new features such as Siri, and “just” a new SoC, would you really expect millions of consumers to fork out another £400?
What's also worth bearing in mind is that a recent report carried out by Strategy Analytics showed that 75 per cent of current iPhone owners in Western Europe are intending to upgrade to another Apple phone – down from 88 per cent this time last year. In the US, where the "force" is still a bit stronger, the figure is down from 93 per cent to 88 per cent. Meanwhile, Google’s Android operating system is enjoying one of the most meteoric rises the world has ever seen.
It’s fairly anecdotal, but there were quite a few stories from the weekend about a lack of queues at Apple Stores around the world – a stark contrast from every other major smartphone or tablet launch that Apple has conducted in the last few years. Apple’s press release even quotes Tim Cook as saying that Apple “practically sold out of iPad minis” – unlike the iPhone 4, 4S and 5, and iPad 2 and 3, which all sold out soon after launch.

Google Nexus 4 review

For the Android purist, only an unlocked Nexus phone will do – since network-subsidised Android phones are somewhat compromised, thanks to their skins, carrier modifications, and infrequent OS updates. Enter the Google Nexus 4 (£239 sim-free for the 8GB model), a totally streamlined smartphone running the new Android 4.2 Jelly Bean OS in its stock form.
The phone is manufactured by LG now, rather than Samsung which made last year’s Galaxy Nexus, and the price is very tempting. Indeed, the Nexus 4 represents a great deal for what amounts to the cleanest – and in our opinion, best – Android experience you can get, despite a few significant flaws.

Design and display

From a short distance, the Nexus 4 looks almost identical to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. But that’s an illusion; instead of the hard plastic sides and back of the Samsung version, the LG model is nicely finished in clear glass on the back, with a lovely sparkling pattern that seems to move as you tilt the handset.

The sides are finished with a grippy soft touch rubber, and there’s a smoked chrome accent ring around the front. The phone measures 69 x 9 x 134mm (WxDxH), and weighs 139 grams. It's a beautiful design that befits a Nexus: Understated, classy, and without frills.

There's not much in the way of hardware controls. The right side features a lone power button, while the left panel houses a chrome volume rocker and a micro-SIM card slot; if you want to switch SIM cards, you open it using a tiny metal key LG provides in the package. A standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack is found up top, while the microUSB port for charging and syncing the phone is on the bottom of the phone.
The 4.7in IPS LCD packs a 1,280 x 768 resolution, and is covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 2. There's less of a gap between the glass and display than before, which is noticeable when you tilt it on its side. The screen is responsive and feels great to the touch. Whites are significantly brighter than the dim, yellowish ones on the Galaxy Nexus. Web pages on the iPhone 5 still look better, thanks to better viewing angles and a still brighter screen, and the iPhone 5's fonts are also kerned more closely and easier to read. But the Nexus 4 display is a tremendous improvement, and it's considerably larger than the iPhone 5's 4in screen. In my tests, typing on the on-screen keyboard was comfortable and responsive in both portrait and landscape modes.

iPad mini or Nexus 7? Tablets to dominate Christmas shopping as PC market struggles

It doesn't exactly come as the shock of the century, but shoppers are set to spurn purchases of traditional PC devices in favour of more interactive toys this holiday season, according to the latest research.

A PriceGrabber survey has revealed that 59 per cent of consumers would prefer to receive a tablet as a festive gift, and iconic US manufacturer Apple unsurprisingly ranks at the top of the collective wish list: nearly two-thirds of respondents (63 per cent) proffered that their preferred present would be a third or fourth-generation iPad, with a further 24 per cent saying that they were hoping for an iPad mini.

In other words, it looks like it's going to be a characteristically strong sales performance from Apple as 2012 draws to a close, with nearly 90 per cent of respondents desiring some kind of Apple tablet.

That obviously bodes well for the Cupertino-based tech titan, as does the fact that iPad mini was cited as the most desired device in the hugely competitive 7in mini tablet category, with 45 per cent of respondents saying it was their lower-priced slate of choice, as opposed to 27 per cent with eyes on Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, and 19 per cent who wanted the Google Nexus 7.

However, that doesn't mean that the consumers surveyed are eschewing other manufacturers – just that they sound like they're a bit of a greedy bunch. In addition to the demand for Apple, Amazon, and Google products, the PriceGrabber study also revealed that 22 per cent of people are hoping for a Samsung Galaxy Note Tab and 13 per cent want to receive Microsoft's new Surface tablet.

"Tablets continue to grow in popularity as a top holiday gift, especially with the emergence of lower-priced tablets targeting budget-conscience consumers," said PriceGrabber VP Rojeh Avanesian in a statement.

"We expect to see a lot of shopping activity in the tablet category again this holiday season, with retailers' battling it out to win the consumer dollar," he added.

PriceGrabber's research draws on the views of nearly 1,500 shoppers in the US - where buying behaviour is typically similar to UK consumer patterns - and represents more worrying reading for the traditional PC industry - last month, po-faced bean counters Gartner again highlighted a decline in global PC shipments of over 8 per cent in Q3 2012.

The Samsung Series 9 S27B970D review

Samsung has been producing slick looking monitors for years, and its latest effort, the Samsung Series 9 S27B970D continues to impress. With edge-to-edge glass, chrome accents, and a unique base, this 27in monitor is a beauty to behold whether it's on or off. More importantly, it delivers outstanding colour and light greyscale quality, deep blacks, and wide viewing angles. However, its £730 price tag will give most users a good case of wallet shock.

Design and features

The Series 9 S27B970D is a beautifully designed monitor. The 27in panel is housed in a slim 30mm brushed aluminium cabinet with a shiny silver band of trim wrapped around the perimeter. The screen and glossy black borders are protected by a single sheet of edge-to-edge glass that gives the Series 9 an elegant look but is reflective, especially when the screen is dark or displaying a very dark background.
The cabinet is supported by a silver metal-clad round base and arm assembly that provides 100mm of height adjustability and a 20 degree tilt radius. The panel does not swivel, nor does it have a pivot hinge like the Dell UltraSharp U2713HM we recently reviewed. The base contains all of the I/O ports; at the rear are DVI (dual link), DisplayPort, HDMI, and USB (upstream) connectors. On the right side of the base are two USB downstream ports, but they are of the 2.0 variety rather than the speedier 3.0 ports found on Dell’s U2713HM. There’s no audio-in jack for when you use a DVI signal, which is odd considering the Series 9 touts a pair of relatively powerful 7 Watt speakers. Granted, you can bring audio in via an HDMI or DisplayPort signal but it just doesn't make sense to omit one of the most widely used audio connectors. As a result, if you're using your PC's DVI output you'll have to rely on an external speaker source.

The Series 9 is one of a handful of monitors that supports MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) technology, which allows you to connect an MHL-compatible device, such as a smartphone or tablet, to the display's HDMI port. The HDM-MHL cable carries full HD (1080p) video and digital audio to the display while simultaneously charging your portable device.
There are five touch buttons (including the power switch) built into a small panel on the front of the mounting arm, just above where it meets the base. The panel has a glossy black finish and the buttons have white LED backlighting, making them easy to see in a darkly lit environment. Three of the buttons act as hot keys for adjusting speaker volume, selecting an input source, and selecting one of five colour (picture) presets. The fourth button launches the OSD menu system where you can take advantage of the ample picture settings.
In addition to the usual Standard, Cinema, and Dynamic (bright) picture modes, the Series 9 offers an sRGB mode and a Calibration mode. The Calibration mode stores settings that you define when using the Natural Colour Expert software (included) and a calibration hardware device such as the i1Display Pro (calibration hardware is sold separately).
Picture settings are generous and include brightness, contrast, dynamic contrast, sharpness, and response time, which provides three settings to help smooth out fast moving images. There's also an HDMI black level, which lets you adjust how dark the darkest parts of the screen appear. There are individual red, green, and blue settings, 13 colour temperature settings ranging from 4,000K to 10,000K (as well as a custom setting), and 12 gamma settings ranging from 1.6 to 2.7. Other settings include three Eco Saving modes (off, 50 per cent, and 75 per cent) and an Auto Off timer.
The Series 9 ships with a CD containing the above mentioned Natural Colour Expert software, a user guide, and drivers. It also comes with an HDMI-MHL cable as well as DisplayPort, DVI, and USB-PC cables. The monitor is covered by a three year warranty that includes parts and labour.

Performance

As with the Dell U2713HM (an IPS monitor), the Series 9 S27B970D has a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1440, which is often referred to as WQHD (Wide Quad High Definition). However, the Series 9 uses Samsung's new PLS (Plane to Line Switching) panel technology, which is similar to IPS (In Plane Switching) tech in that it offers rich colour quality and wide viewing angles. PLS technology is said to deliver more accurate colours than IPS technology, and offers a much brighter picture as well.
Pre-calibrated at the factory, the Series 9 delivers bright, vibrant colours and very dark blacks. It aced the DisplayMate Colour Scales test, displaying well saturated, uniform colours across the scale. There was no tinting or banding and skin tones appeared natural. The PLS had no trouble displaying every shade of light grey on the 64-step Greyscale test but it struggled a bit at the dark end, displaying the darkest two shades of grey as black. Still, shadow detail in my test photo was relatively sharp with only faint clipping in very dark areas of the photo.
Off-angle viewing was superb. There was no loss of luminance when viewed from any angle and colour fidelity remained intact. The panel's 5 millisecond (black-to-white) pixel response delivered blur-free motion while I played a few rounds of Assassin's Creed II on the PC, and Burnout Paradise on the PS3 console.
The Series 9 S27B970D drew 48 Watts of power during my tests, which isn't terrible but it also isn’t what you would consider energy efficient, especially when compared to today's big TN panels. By way of comparison, the IPS-based Dell U2713HM used 32 Watts and it’s also a 27in monitor – and TN-based 27in panels can sip power in the 20 Watts range.

Verdict

The Samsung Series 9 S27B970D is arguably the sweetest looking big screen monitor to hit our labs, but that's only part of its appeal. It uses PLS panel technology to deliver bright, bold colours that remain intact from any angle, and it offers three digital inputs and a USB hub. It has a little trouble displaying the darkest shades of grey but handles light greys with aplomb, and if you're a gamer, blurring is not an issue.
The lack of an audio-in port is a glaring omission, and its £730 price tag is a bit over the top, but if money is no object and you can live without a dedicated audio input, the Series 9 is a solid choice for a big screen monitor. That said, the Dell U2713HM edges the Samsung effort out – it costs £200 less, offers impressive performance, and features a fully ergonomic stand, a non-reflective screen, and a more generous selection of ports, including a four port USB 3.0 hub.
