Perfectly Posh Review

At the prom boutique I worked at last week, there was a booth selling something I didn't recognize. That's a rarity for me when it comes to direct sales companies. It was something called Posh Boutique. It reminded me of Lush, and I loves me some Lush.

She had set up body butters, bath bombs, lotion bars, lip balms. I was in girly spa heaven.

One of the first things I noticed about the products was the scent. Julia, the consultant, had an entire table of them, but the scent wasn't crazy-strong. Sometimes when I visit other stores (which shall not be named), I am overwhelmed by the smell. It always smells good, but after a few minutes I get a headache. With Perfectly Posh, it smells amazing, but not overpowering.

Julia was gracious enough to give me some product to review.

The Bominator in Slap! Wired Mango Caffeine Fizz, Chunk! Bath Bar in Chatter and Lipshot LipBalm in John Doe.

I tried the lip balm first since I could pop the top off and use it anywhere. John Doe is a minty detoxifying formula. I'm not sure how to tell if my lips have been fully detoxed, but I do know that they're really soft. My lips absorbed the product without leaving a greasy film. I noticed a lasting difference from this one!

The bath bomb smells delish. I have a little mango obsession, so this was right up my alley. The caffeine in the product isn't to wake you up, but to reduce cellulite. I think it will take me a few more baths to reduce this girl's unsightly dimples, but I have that chance. Each Bombinator has multiple uses. Just place it in a plastic bag and drop it on a hard floor. I can't wait to use it again!

The Chatter soa is a citrus-scented bar of luxury. It's really moisturizing with natural glycerin. And at 7 oz., it will last me a while too! I'm not used to using bar soap, but this might have converted me. It gave me soft skin while still making me feel clean. That's impressive coming from a girl who loves her bath pouf.

All-in-all, Perfectly Posh gets a rousing thumbs-up from me. Prices are spot on for the quality and Julia was super fun to work with.

It was really random how it all came together, but I could not be happier!

SNAP! is a 3-day conference targeting handmade craft, event planning and DIY bloggers. Granted, I'm technically none of those things. (Does DIY hair count?) But I know I'll be able to apply 99.9% of what I learn there to make my blog cooler, bigger and better.

I can't wait to go, then come back and share the awesomeness with you all! The question is…can I wait 2 more weeks?!

Gradient Nail Tutorial

I've tried a few different tutorials on doing gradient nails so I decided to try it for myself! Using my sister as a guinea pig (thanks Sis!), I used a messy, but cool technique with a makeup sponge.

Paint your nails a base color. Since you'll be sponging on the polish, the color isn't as intense as painting. You'll definitely need something as a "background".
Choose your colors. The most I would do is 3 unless you have long nails. Then you can fit more!
Clip a makeup sponge in a shape roughly the size of your largest fingernail. Liberally paint the polish on your sponge since it will soak it up.
Apply the nail from the sponge to your nails. Do this as many times as it takes to you reach the opacity you like, reapplying the polish to the sponge each time. Just to warn you, it will make a huge mess! Clean up the edges using fingernail polish remover and a cotton swab.
Apply a clear topcoat. This will not only protect the polish from chipping, but it evens out the texture from the sponge.
All done!

I saw The Hunger Games twice this weekend and it did NOT disappoint! The Capitol was just as I imagined it. And the hair! The clothes! I cannot fathom dressing over 500 extras. Insane!

In an interview with Behind the Chair magazine, Cherry Petenbrink talked about being the haircolor designer for the film. Some interesting facts she shares from the film…

$30,000 of wigs were rented to test for Katniss' hair color since they wanted the perfect shade of brown on film.

Stanley Tucci's wig was custom made and came in solid blue. Cherry had to add dimension to the color and was worried she would mess it up.

Her favorite look to create was Octavia, one of Katniss' stylists. Her style isn't described a lot in the books, so she just had fun with it and gave her magenta hair!
She only had 20 minutes to prep each extra.
75-100 Capitol extras had their own hair colored for the film. All the rest wore wigs.

This wig is one of my favorites. Effie's, of course. It has synthetic hair in the back and real hair in the front so they could style it as crazy as they wanted to. And that color! I wish I could rock hair that color. Sigh…

I apologize for not posting this until now. It's been a craaaazy day!

I did my sister's makeup today. I think it looks natural, don't you?

Ha! She was a little freaked out by how everything looked since she is a very toned-down kinda gal, but I think she looks awesome! I kept daring her to go to Walmart in it. Alas, she hates going there when she looks normal, let alone when she looks like Effie Trinket.

Can I tell you how in love with paper eyelashes I am? I am infatuated with them. I love how you can easily manipulate them as they're applied. The downer? They're really long. But if you cut them, you'd lose some of the design. What's a girl to do?

I'm so ready for The Hunger Games to come out this weekend! Hence this crazy makeup tutorial for Effie Trinket. She's epitomizes the over-the-top looks of the Capitol and this is just one of her many fabulous looks from the movie.

A few notes on my video:

I talk. A lot. I fast forwarded as much as I could but you can still tell how much I'm talking. Blah, blah, blah.
I will never use the program I used to record this again. It's lame-o and jerky. I hate it but I wasn't about to record this look again.
Why couldn't Vimeo offer me a decent screen shot for my still? This is as good as I could get.
From watching this 5 million times in edit, I realize I sound like a valley girl. I apologize to everyone who has to listen to me speak on a regular basis.

Hunger Games Preview

Folks, if you haven't heard, The Hunger Games movie comes out next weekend. (View the trailers here.) I'm sooooo excited! I loved the books and can't wait to see the movie.

I'm dedicating all next week to Hunger Games tutorials. Katniss and Effie are sure to be represented. My daughter has been wanting her hair shorter for a while, so last night we took the plunge. I did a simple a-line bob. She's super happy with it and I think she pulls off shorter hair quite well. It's super cute when she tucks it behind her ears.

Northern Lights Top Coat Review

I first saw this polish by INM 10 years ago and had to have it. It had the tiniest sparkles and I loved wearing it by itself on my nails. When I saw it again a couple weeks ago, it charmed me again. This time, though, I wasn't just wearing it for looks, but to see how it stood up as a top coat.

Northern Lights makes a few claims. Let's see if it lived up to them.

Perfect for today's high fashion nails?
I don't know if they're wearing it on the runway, but I think it looks pretty cool.

The Northern Lights Hologram Top Coat "dries in seconds"?
Yes, but you have to give enough cure time for the polish underneath to dry completely. If you don't and you bump or touch your nail, the top coat is fine, but the polish below gets ruined.

Forms a glaze to make your polish chip-proof?
Nope. My polish lasted as long as it would have without this top coat. As you can see, my nails still chipped (my right hand is even worse).

Northern Lights over OPI's I Vant to be A-Lone Star

All in all, it creates a beautiful effect. It definitely looks better in person than in the photo. But if you're looking for a sturdy top coat to make your manicure last, I don't recommend Northern Lights.
