Team USA’s match against Mexico is all about exacting revenge after bitter Gold Cup loss

Most headlines and news commentary reads: “Klinsmann will have US on the attack…Jurgen Klinsmann to make coaching debut against archrival Mexico… Klinsmann Not Cure-All for US Soccer…Jurgen Klinsmann will listen to advisers as USA soccer coach…: Klinsmann needs to overhaul US soccer's grassroots development...The Klinsmann era at the helm...

Klinsmann, Klinsmann, Klinsmann…

Yes. The upcoming exhibition match against Mexico this Wednesday in Philadelphia at the Lincoln Financial Field will be Klinsi’s debut at the head to Team USA. But that is not the main story.

The main story is that this hastily scheduled CONCACAF Clasico is all about exacting some measure of revenge after the U.S. was humbled by Mexico, losing the 2011 Gold Cup Final in a heartbreaker 2-4, after mounting an impressive 2-0 lead with goals by Michael Bradley and Landon Donovan.

That fact that the loss came in front of over 90,000 fans at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, and that the closing ceremonies were held in English and Spanish by a circus ringmaster of some sorts added to Team USA’s overall dismay, and in Tim Howard’s case, to livid anger. Howard is surely not a fan of Univision’s Fernando Fiore’s circus ringleader style of reporting and of his unstoppable and loud motor mouth. Fiore conducted the awards ceremony like if he was presenting animal performers and their trainers at the Ringlin Bros. and Barnum &amp; Bailey Circus.

Though, U.S. officials will surely not publicly acknowledge it, the fact is that this “friendly” against “El Tri” was put together for one main purpose: seek a quick and satisfying revenge of some sort that can alleviate the team’s pain. Who can forget Tim Howard pounding the field frenetically after Gio Dos Santos’ brilliant goal? The look on astonishment in the face of defender Eric Lichaj after leaping helplessly trying to head off the ball? The overall look of dejection and frustration of the entire team following the match?

The 2011 Gold Cup final was a thriller. A terrific game from beginning to end. Unfortunately for the U.S., Mexico’s “Fab Four” (“Chicharito,” Andres Guardado, Gio Dos Santos and Pablo Barrera), were is great form and made their presence felt. All except “Chicharito” scored.

For the U.S. it was a crushing loss. A truly, BIG TIME, devastating loss. A type of loss you want to put behind as soon as possible. And what better way to doing just that than facing the same opponent and beating them?

A story on Goal.com reports that “despite being left on the bench in the Gold Cup final against Mexico, United States and New York Red Bulls defender Tim Ream hasn’t held back on wanting to settle the score against the Stars and Stripes’ biggest rival.”

Goal.com quotes Ream: “There is definitely still a sour feeling after being up 2-0 against them in the Gold Cup final. Being able to go up against them again so quickly after a tough loss, I think there is a lot more motivation. Personally I want to get out there, take it to them, and get revenge on them.”

There will be NOTHING “friendly” about Wednesday’s “friendly” against “El Tri.”

Team USA will go out on the field ready, eager and determined to get some sort of revenge. For Team USA this will be the equivalent of second Gold Cup Final.

And, oh, yeah, as the news media has reported ad nauseum, this will be Klinsi’s debut as head coach of the team.

Three Mexican Americans will be on the field for Team USA: Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis/Mexico), Edgar Castillo (Club América/Mexico) and Jose Francisco Torres (Pachuca/Mexico) (without counting Carlos Bocanegra, whose father is of Mexican heritage).

The other terrific novelty is the return of DaMarcus Beasley who happens to currently play with Puebla of Mexico.

Mexico will be with their “Fab Four” minus one: Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez. The other three will be there: Pablo Barrera (West Ham, England), Giovanni dos Santos (Tottenham, England), and Andres Guardado (La Coruna/Spain).

You can catch all the action live on Univision (8:30 pm ET) with announcers that actually yell out and celebrate each and every single goal, the way it should be! (Announcers on the other networks are even afraid to say the word goal. They just clinically say the updated score and quickly get on with the rest of the game. How anti-futbol is that. Boring).

Tottenham Hotspurs star Giovanni Dos Santos' jewel of a goal highlighted Mexico’s brilliant win over the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final

Pasadena, California (June 25, 2011) - A masterpiece goal by Giovanni Dos Santos highlighted the well deserved triumph of Mexico over the United States, 4-2, in the final of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Mexico won a record-setting sixth title in front of a crowd of 93,420 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Pablo Barrera scored two goals (50th and 39th minute), Andres Guardado (36th minute) added another for “El Tri”.
But it Dos Santos’ jewel of a goal that truly wowed the fans due to the incredible skill, poise and accuracy that the Brazilian-Mexican player displayed in making it happen.

On the 76th minute, Gio received a pass from Gerardo Torrado outside the goal box on the right side, he then eluded USA goalkeeper Tim Howard’s two efforts to tackle him on his feet, kept dribbling to the center, and then, in between three onrushing defenders, unleashed an incredibly accurate lobbed shot toward the upper left-hand corner of the U.S. goal. The shot kept looping in a perfect arch toward the precise upper-left corner and could not be stopped by a leaping defender who tried to clear the ball.

It was a moment that made all soccer fans – not just Mexico soccer fans- believe that dreams do come true. It was a goal that reminded all futbol/soccer fans why we love this game so much. It was artistry, it was inspiration, it was beauty. It was an authentic celebration of the sport.

Mexico has won two consecutive Gold Cup titles and its sixth overall. The win qualifies “El Tri” to compete in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, considered a preview of the 2014 World Cup.

Mexico's Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez was the tournament’s top striker with seven goals, and was named the competition’s Most Valuable Player. “Chicharito” scored 20 goals for his club, the famed Manchester United during last year’s Premier League season.

Michael Bradley and Landon Donovan scored for the United States helping the Americans build a 2-0 lead. With his tally, Donovan became the Gold Cup's all-time leading scorer with 13 goals.

CHICHARITO'S EXQUISITE BACKHEEL GOAL SENDS MEXICO TO CONCACAF GOLD CUP SEMIFINALS

Ruiz's goal in the fifth minute put Mexico on its heels. But the the tournament favorites turned it on in the second half and scored two goals, by De Nigris and "Chicharito" Hernandez, that led to their victory.

NEW MEADOWLANDS STADIUM, NJ (June 18, 2011) - Heavy favorite Mexico beat a tough-as-nails Guatemala, sliding into the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals, 2-1, in front of an announced crowd of 78,807. The “Aztecas” will face Honduras in one of the semifinals at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. The other semifinals will feature the winners of the USA vs Jamaica, and El Salvador vs Panama quarterfinals matches.

Carlos Ruiz, Guatemala’s best and most experienced attacker, scored the first goal of the game and got the “Chapines” excited and ready to dream. The Philadelphia Union star scored a beautiful goal, chipping the ball over the Mexican goalkeeper in the fifth minute after receiving a pass from Wilfred Velasquez. Guatemala took the 1-0 lead into the second half.

But the second half belonged to Mexico. The team dominated and Aldo De Nigris tied the match (49th minute) tapping in a loose ball inside the box after Guatemalan goalkeeper Ricardo Jerez blocked a shot but did was not able to hold the ball. Then on the 62nd minute, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez scored an easy go-ahead goal with a slick back-heel shot when he found himself surprisingly unmarked in front of the Guatemalan goalpost. Hernandez, one of Manchester United's biggest stars, continues to show superb form at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, leading the competition in scoring with 6 goals.

Mexico could have scored one or two additional goals but its attackers were not very sharp this day.

Guatemala fought hard, but other than the Ruiz goal, could not muster much of an attack. Defensively the team was superb in the first half but allowed much freedom to Mexico in the second period.

HONDURAS BEATS COSTA RICA AND ADVANCES TO GOLD CUP SEMIFINALS.

HONDURAS CONTINUES DOMINANCE OF COSTA RICA

NEW MEADOWLANDS STADIUM (June 18, 2011) - The long history of dominance of Honduras is alive and well. Once again, Honduras beat Costa Rica in a major competition. This time, in quarterfinals of the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the “Catrachos” eliminated the “Ticos” by penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw after the 90 minutes of regulation time.

Jerry Bengston (49 min) scored the first goal for Honduras. Dennis Marshall tied the match for Costa Rica (56 min) in regulation.

Alvaro Saborio and Celso Borges missed penalty shots for Costa Rica.

Costa Rica will face Guatemala or Mexico in the semifinals in Houston.

Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares was named "Man of the Match."

New York Cosmos' first match in over 25 years will be against ManU in Paul Scholes testimonial match

June 10, 2011 (New York, NY) – The New York Cosmos announced that the legendary American club will play its first match in over 25 years in August against Manchester United. The exhibition game will be played in honor of long-time ManU forward Paul Scholes who retired this year.

The Cosmos roster for this match will be made up of players from around the world personally invited by Honorary President Pelé and Director of Soccer Eric Cantona. The roster will be announced by Cosmos in due course.

The match will be played at Old Trafford on August 5^th.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to play in one of the most historic stadiums in the world, and look forward to having The New York Cosmos be a part of Paul Scholes’ testimonial match,” Pelé said. “More importantly, I hope this will be a fantastic evening for Paul and for all the fans, while giving us a chance to reconnect with our football family at Manchester United.”

ECUADOR AND GREECE BRING SOCCER PASSION TO CITI FIELD HOME OF THE NY METS

Expected soccer sell-out at Citi Field may motivate Mets ownership to invest into Major League Soccer

New York, NY (June 7, 2011) - Citi Field will not be home to “America's pastime” this Tuesday evening. Rather Citi Field will be the home to “the world's game” when the national teams of Ecuador and Greece take the field at a soccer-converted Citi Field, the home the New York Mets.

The Mets expect a sell-out crowd of approximately 50,000 fans to enthusiastically and passionately cheer on their respective teams. It will be a night of exhuberance and celebration, full of international flair, like only international futbol can deliver.

Bottom line: The event will be a tremendous sporting and financial success.

The Mets ownership will look at another example of what the “New America” looks like. It is multicultural, multiracial, and a bulk of the community speaks espanol and - yes, it is absolutely wild about futbol/soccer.

This will be another vivid example of what the soccer market in NYC can deliver. The Mets ownership may not recognize many things, but it surely recognizes U.S. American dollars, regardless of whose pockets they come from.

This soccer match, and another international game expected to be played this summer, may be the last tidbits of hard marketing data that the Mets ownership groups needs to digest, before they decided to invest close a 100 million dollars to be part of Major League Soccer.

MLS has publicly communicated its interest in having its next expansion team come from New York City, specifically Queens. The next expansion fee is said to be between $75 to 100 million. Moreover, a potential partnership between the Mets ownership and the group that owns the branding rights to the NY Cosmos, appears to be very likely.

Having all these elements in mind, it will not be absurd to say that NY Mets are getting ready to exchange bats and helmets, for soccer balls and shin guards.

As ESPN reports, the Mets' previous home, Shea Stadium had considerable soccer history.

Ecuador's head coach Reinaldo Rueda said the team is “committed to winning” and will come out hungry for a win against the Greeks. On the bright side, striker Michael Arroyo has scored a goal on two consecutive games, both of them brilliant long-distance shots that mesmerized the Ecuadorian fans. Arroyo will surely look to make it three games in a row against the European team.

Manchester United forward Antonio Valencia will not play in tonight's match.

Greece will look to build on last week's win over Malta as they prepare for the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

CONCACAF GOLD CUP OVERSHADOWED BY FIFA SCANDAL INVOLVING CONCACAF PRESIDENT

New York, NY (May 31, 2011) - CONCACAF President Jack Warner has been ousted.

Surprisingly, his accuser is none other than CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off in less than a week, and the soccer world is abuzz with talk about a huge FIFA scandal involving Mr. Warner and Asian confederation president Mohamed Bin Hammam. Few are talking about Landon Donovan, "Chicharito" Hernandez and Carlos Ruiz and of the terrific games coming to stadiums throughout the United States. Instead the focus is what is transpiring off the field having to do with corruption, bribes and scandals.

What is going on?

Mr. Warner and Mr. Bin Hamman are accused of corruption and breaching FIFA’s ethics regulations by Mr. Blazer. As result of the American soccer executive’s accusations, the FIFA Ethics Committee, on Sunday, suspended Mr. Warner, a FIFA vice-president, and Mr. Bin Hamman, a member of the FIFA Executive Committee, from engaging on any football activities effective immediately.

The allegations against Mr. Warner of Trinidad & Tobago, indicate that he conducted a meeting with Mr. Bin Hammam of Qatar, where bribes were handed out to obtain votes for Mr. Bin Hamman who was challenging FIFA President Sepp Blatter in this year’s FIFA presidential elections. Mr. Bin Hamman has withdrawn his candidacy.

The charges have been denied by Warner and Bin Hammam.

Mr. Blazer said that he has provided ample evidence to the FIFA Ethics Committee to substantiate his accusations. Moreover, the Puerto Rican soccer federation (FPF) has provided evidence that backed up the claims according to FIFA. FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke read an email sent by the FPF president Eric Labrador where he confirms receipt of a check for $40,000 from the Caribbean Football Union. Valcke applauded the action taken by the FPF to contribute to the investigation and revealed that the FPF was the first Caribbean association to make public the distribution of the money.

For his part, Warner says he has statements from 13 Caribbean federations backing him. But that would mean that 12 other Caribbean associations will no longer be willing to support him, dramatically weakening his power base.

Both Mr. Warner and Mr. Blazer have been long-time supporters of Mr. Blatter.

ANALYSIS

To put things in perspective, it is not unusual for the FIFA “dirty laundry” to be exposed every time a FIFA presidential election comes about. That is the time, when alliances are made, deals are cut, and strategic plans are implemented.

This time around Warner decided to “betray” FIFA President Sepp Blatter, whom he has supported consistently for many years. Warner decided to support Blatter’s rival for the presidency, Mr. Bin Hammam.

Another vivid example of vigorous FIFA presidential elections maneuvering dates back to 2002, when then UEFA President Lennart Johansson challenged Mr. Blatter. Mr. Johanson piled a long list of accusations of alleged corruption against Mr. Blatter.

However, once the dust settled, it was determined that the accusations were substantiated by internal leaks coming from then FIFA Secretary-General Michel Zen-Ruffinen, who was then duly dismissed by Mr. Blatter. Mr. Blatter went on to win reelection.

Beyond the tactics involved, there are practical concerns at play, like the desire by many to change leadership at the top of CONCACAF. With Mr. Warner's stranglehold of the numerous Caribbean national associations' votes, getting this change is practically impossible, barring - yes, a scandal.

For many years now, North and Central American nations have been deprived of holding the top post. There is a level of frustration and a desire for change. Mexico has flirted with the idea of leaving CONCACAF and joining South America's CONMEBOL. The United States has long felt that its economic power in the sport has not gained them all that they would like. They and Canada would welcome new leadership that enables them to exert more influence and leadership in the organization.

MR. BLAZER'S WHISTLEBLOWING MAY HAVE A POSITIVE LONG-TERM IMPACT ON FIFA

According to the New York Times, Mr. Blazer’s whistleblowing may do for soccer what Marc Hodler, a member of the International Olympic Committee from Switzerland, did in 1998 when his remarks about corruption revealded the truth behind Salt Lake City’s bribery scandal.

Dick Pound, a delegate of the International Olympic Committee from Montreal who investigated that scandal, said that the money in question at Salt Lake pales to the millions in bribery allegations that have emerged recently at FIFA.

“If anything like what happened to FIFA had happened to the I.O.C., our days would be numbered,” Pound said to the New York Times.

Pound questioned whether the soccer federation had enough credibility for anyone to have faith in an internal investigation.

“If it’s not going to be just a laughingstock, you’d probably have to get someone from the outside willing to do it,” Pound said. A commission with access to internal documents would be best according to him.

“They’ve got to do something and make sure it is serious and transparent,” Pound added.

I had the opportunity to work directly with Mr. Blazer during my time with CONCACAF where I served as manager of media relations. I know Mr. Blazer to be a hard-working, honest and talented soccer executive. It is certainly to his credit to have taken such decisive and valiant action that can serve as a catalyst for major FIFA internal reforms.

People like Mr. Blazer are a credit to FIFA, CONCACAF, U.S. soccer and to the sport as a whole.

However, the problem is structural. FIFA needs to find better ways of ensuring maximum transparency and accountability. FIFA continues to reject any outside oversight over its affairs. Despite its continued opposition, the days for that structure seems to be numbered.

FIFA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS SET FOR JUNE 1ST

In the middle of the commotion, FIFA plans to conduct its presidential elections on Wednesday, June 1st as previously scheduled. Mr. Blatter appears as the only candidate for the post.

On Monday, Mr. Blatter said : “The difficulties will be deal with inside the FIFA family.”

Dealing with major issues like these “inside the FIFA family” may no longer be acceptable to the world soccer community. Stricter accountability seems to be demanded from FIFA by various stakeholders, most notably by national governments, whom FIFA has successfully fended off for many decades.

Only time will tell, if FIFA will continue to successfully keep itself isolated, protected and undisturbed inside its own cocoon.

FC BARCELONA COACH PEP GUARDIOLA PREPARES FOR A LOSS AND A QUICK EXIT

Despite being the heavy favorites to win the Champions League final, FC Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola sounds pessimistic and spent, as if sensing that a loss against Manchester United is imminent.

Quoted in Spanish news outlet, Adn.es, Guardiola says “Whoever loses will feel hurt, but losing does not erase what has been done well.” Referring to report stating that Johan Cruyff said that if Barcelona wins the Champions League final Guardiola will leave, Pep simply said: “My future does not need to be discussed at this time.”

Guardiola issued a warning: "If we play like we did in Rome, we will not win.” The 2009 Champions League final played in Italy’s capital was won by Barca, 2-0, with goals from Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi. With the win, Barcelona earned a historic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, a feat never before achieved by a Spanish club.

Ironically, Guardiola said that winning, yes, winning may affect him and the club negatively. "The wear and tear does take place, but when you win you have to keep winning and think about continuing the course. Win or lose, there are always problems. Winning allows you to work with more tranquility. But after a year of winning one has to try to do it again the next year.”

Compared to the squad that beat ManU in Rome, Guardiola said that this year’s Barca team is better but remained extremely cautious and sounded worried. “We are enthusiastic, but if we play at the Rome level, we will not win. In Rome, Manchester United had more intensity. Looking back at that game, I see that we did not play well. Now we have to do a better job.”

NEW NIKE BLACK JERSEY ON THE WAY FOR BARCELONA

Nike recently revealed the new jerseys of the legendary Catalan club. The away kit is entirely black. Black jersey, black shorts, and black socks with yellow trim. The home kit is virtually the same.

The Qatar Foundation is the new name emblazoned across the front of both the home and away strips. The Unicef letters moved to rear of the jerseys.

News reports indicate that the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development will pay Barca 150 million euros over five years as they become the club's first ever paying shirt sponsors. Unicef does not pay Barca for the privilege of having its name in their jerseys.

New York, NY (May 23, 2011) - Sensational American striker Juan Agudelo of Red Bull New York has been selected to play for the United States national team in the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup. The 2011 edition of the Confederation’s most important event kicks off on June 5th and will played in 13 venues across the United States.

The 18 year-old Colombian-American is the first U.S. Soccer Development Academy alumnus to play for the full national team. The skillful and creative striker scored two superb goals in four appearances for the senior team, including a goal against world powerhouse Argentina in March of this year. His goal earned the U.S. a 1-1- tie after the world's best player, Lionel Messi, provided a superb assist to teammate, Esteban Cambiasso, to put Argentina ahead, 1-0.

Despite his spurts of sheer brilliance, the player called the "New Jewel of MLS" by ESPN Deportes magazine, has yet to earn a spot in his club's starting lineup. With only nine games with Red Bull New York under his belt, the 6’ 1’’forward has already tallied two goals including a remarkable strike against DC United that was deemed the MLS Goal of the Week.

In his first earned cap for the United States last year, Agudelo scored the winning goal in a friendly against South Africa becoming the youngest player ever to score for the United States senior national team. Prior to being called up by the senior national side, he played for the U.S. Under-20 and U-17 national teams.

Agudelo was born in Manizales, Colombia, a city in the central region of the country that is renowned as the country’s main center for the production of Colombian coffee. The city is also home to great soccer players and clubs, including Once Caldas FC, Colombia’s first division champions. The club was recently eliminated by famed Santos of Brazil failing to make the semifinals of Copa Libertadores.

The USA will begin Gold Cup Group C play on June 7 against Canada, followed by a match against “Los Canaleros” of Panama on June 11, and concluding with a clash against Guadeloupe on June 14^th. The United States has won four Gold Cup titles and, along with Mexico, is one of the heavy favorites to take the cup.

But before the Gold Cup kicks off, Agudelo will have a chance of playing against world champions, Spain, June 4th in Foxborough, Mass. That highly anticipated match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on ESPN and Univision.

New York, NY (May 18, 2011) - The rumor mill is spinning wildly around Major League Soccer.

The American investors who recently purchased AS Roma are reportedly eager to add an American star player to the “Yellow-Reds” to play alongside living legend, Francesco Totti, the club’s current captain. There is talk that Red Sox minority owner Thomas DiBenedetto is pushing to acquire America’s all-around best player, Landon Donovan, of the LA Galaxy, a move that could generate an estimated $14 million transfer fee for MLS.

News reports indicate that if established American stars like Donovan prove to be a bit too expensive, AS Roma will turn its focus on young and emerging American stars with much promise, like 18 year-old Colombian-American star forward Juan Agudelo of Red Bull New York.

Donovan’s name is also being mentioned repeatedly in Mexico’s Primera Division circles. Various news outlets, including ESPN Deportes, are reporting that Club America is seriously considering making an offer for the 29-year old American star, the US national team’s all-time leading scorer with 45 goals.

There is also a rumor “in reverse,” an Italian star coming to America. Living legend, Alessandro Del Piero, Juventus FC's most celebrated striker of the last few decades, is reportedly interested in playing for the LA Galaxy. If all the 36 year-old star is interested in is collecting a few more paydays and semi-retirement in sunny South California, he is in for a big surprise. The expectations will be high, Mr. Del Piero! If you don't believe it, ask David Beckham!

“In America? That could be a possibility,” Del Piero is quoted in the Italian press. “It’s a country that I do like. I could also take advantage of such an opportunity by going to watch the LA Lakers play…” (Alessandro surely missed this year’s NBA playoffs and did not watch the Lakers get trashed by the Dallas Mavericks! Not much to watch anymore, Alessandro!).

Dominican youngster wins “Sueño MLS” 2011 competition presented by Allstate.

Proving that soccer is global appeal, MLS recently announced that 18 year-old forward Birnes Adames won the “Sueño MLS” 2011 field player search. His triumph earned him an invitation to join one of the Philadelphia Union's Academy teams as his home town of Camden, N.J., falls within that region.

Adames, born in Santa Cruz de Mao, Dominican Republic, was one of 1,200 aspiring players that competed in regional tryouts in Dallas, Chicago and Philadelphia. The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean nation renowned for its ability to produce world class baseball players. But as we can see, the country is also home to first class native soccer talent.

Sixteen year-old Anthony Hall from Dallas, Texas, beat out two other finalists to win the Allstate "Good Hands" top goalkeeper designation.

FC New York makes its home debut at Belson Stadium in Queens New York

Their celeste blue is reminiscent of Manchester City’s colors and their lofty ambitions are identical

New York City’s one and only professional soccer club, FC New York, played its inaugural home game last Saturday at Belson Stadium in Queens, New York.

The historical match was successful in every way, except the scoreboard. The club lost to Orlando City, 1-2.Off the pitch, everything ran smoothly, the stadium operations, security, the referees, ticket sales, press box, public announcer, and yes, the team had a near sellout, registering an attendance of 2,011, just a bit short of the 2,500 venue capacity.

Despite the loss, the team did score a true golazo off the boot of Owen Morrison, who chipped a beautiful rainbow shot over the Orlando goalkeeper on the 54th minute, tying the match. Orlando City’s goals were scored by Lawrence Olum in the first half, and Lewis Neal, off a free kick just outside the penalty box in the second half.

FC New York looked solid on the field, moving the ball well, with technical skill and a well defined tactical plan. Right away, one came away with the impression that the team is well coached and that the players are fit and ready to compete.

The fan experience at Belson Stadium, home of the St. John’s University soccer program, is truly outstanding. The small stadium provides a cozy atmosphere. The stands are very near the field, as a result, every single fan in attendance gets to live the dynamic soccer action up-close and personal.

Belson Stadiums’s food vendors provide hot and tasty meals and a variety of drinks and all the fan facilities, including the rest rooms, are clean and well kept. St. John’s University staff and students work security and other posts around the stadium and do a great job. Plus, there is an official police presence around the clock as well. There is ample and free parking available.

Gutsy Guatemalan U-20 team sends the “Chapines” to their first ever FIFA World Cup of any kind.

Mateo Flores Stadium, Guatemala City, Guatemala (April 7, 2011) - Boosted by their rabid fans, the U-20 “Chapines”defeated the heavily favored Team USA, 2-1, in front of a raucus crowd at Mateo Flores stadium in Guatemala City.

With a lot of heart, and by “sweating the jersey” profusely, the Guatemala U-20 national team became the first ever team from the Central American nation to qualify to a FIFA World Cup.

It is not an exaggeration to say that Guatemala defeated a true CONCACAF “Goliath” as the United States had qualified to seven consecutive U-20 FIFA World Cups.

A resilient, tough, and scrappy Guatemalan team believed it can do it, and boosted by a lot of adrenalin and inspired by a loyal and determined crowd, their belief somehow became a reality.

One thing is for sure: April 6, 2011 will be forever etched in the collective memories and hearts of all “Chapines.” The long-suffering Guatemalans have been used to living with pain and frustration for decades. Finally, they can switch from saying “Si se puede!” (Yes we can!) to “Si se pudo!” (Yes we did it!).

In what surely be considered as one of the biggest upsets in CONCACAF youth history, Guatemala defeated Team USA, 2-1 Wednesday night with goals from Gerson Lima (32nd minute) and Henry Lopez (68th minute), the Guatemala LatinoTop10.com Man of the Match. The lone American tally came from striker Conor Doyle (65th minute) connecting after receiving a pass from U.S. LatinoTop10.com Man of the Match, Amobi Okugo.

With the victory, the “Chapines” changed the history of the Central American nation and earned a spot in the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup to be held in Colombia in July.

History making Guatemala will be joined by Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama as the four representatives from the CONCACAF region. The Americans were stunned and shocked failing to qualify for the tournament for the first time since 1995.

Guatemala City, Guatemala – (April 5, 2011) - Mexico and Costa Rican booked their tickets to the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup with easy wins over Canada and Cuba, respectively.

Mexico displayed ample superiority over a hard-working but talent stricken Canadian team. With outstanding creative passing and playmaking from LatinoTop10.com “Player of the Match” midfielder Alan Pulido, and a superb effort from defender Diego De Buen, Mexico easily outplayed Canada and won the match, 3-0. Kristian Alvarez opened the score in the first half with a long-distance bomb that caught the Canadian goalkeeper off guard. Second-half goals from De Buen and Jorge Mora sealed the victory for “El Tri” at Mateo Flores stadium in Guatemala City. De Buen's goal was the best of the night. The defender struck the ball beautifully from about 20 yards and his shot flew like a rocket into the upper corner of the goal leaving the Canadian goalkeeper with absolutely no chance.

Mexico secured their twelfth appearance at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, bouncing back after failing to win through to the 2009 edition of the tournament in Egypt.

In the first match of the doubleheader, Costa Rica got an early scare from Cuba, who scored an early first goal, but ended up crushing the islanders 6-1, including a “Hat Trick” from their number 10, striker Joel Campbell, the LatinoTop10.com “Man of the Match.”. Mynor Miller, Bryan Vega and Joshua Diaz scored the other goals for the Ticos.

Costa Rica have appeared in seven previous FIFA U-20 World Cups finishing in fourth place at Egypt 2009.

On Wednesday, the two remaining berths will be decided. In the first match, the red-hot “Catrachos” of Honduras will have a duel with the always dangerous “Canaleros” of Panama. Following that showdown, “Los Chapines” of Guatemala will do their best to generate inspired play in front of their home crowd to beat the heavily favored United States.

- It was hilarious to hear Cuban fans cheer on their team Cuban style, i.e. with heavily Cuban accents and using colorful, funny and energetic language as only Cubans can. It would be great to see Cuba take its game to a much higher level if only to enjoy their fans, their exhuberance and the wonderful Cuban music.

Same wish goes for Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. I would be in heaven if I ever get to watch high-level Puerto Rico soccer with a wonderful dose of Salsa and Reggaeton music on the sidelines! Would not mind seeing some world class Dominican soccer accompanied with an skeleton-shaking Merengue music in the stands.

U.S. aims to grab Argentinean “Madman" Marcelo Bielsa to take over U.S. men’s program

The U.S. Soccer Federation is attempting to lure Marcelo “El Loco” Bielsa to run the men’s national team program, but the savvy soccer strategist has many offers on the table, including one from Qatar.

According to several credible Chilean news media outlets, including El Mercurio, the USSF has made an offer to Bielsa to work as technical director for the men's national team. Bielsa would have control over all aspects of the U.S. men's national program, including youth development, though Bob Bradley would remain as the head coach of the senior national team.

“El Loco” is crazy about tactics, playing schemes, concepts and theories. There is no soccer strategy and tactic that Bielsa has not fully analyzed, contemplated, probed and experimented with. The man is a soccer savant, a futbol maniac with a border line pathological obsession with the game.

U.S. Soccer would be fortunate to grab the highly experienced former head coach of the Argentinean and Chilean national teams. Bielsa is nothing short than a genius when it comes to helping teams construct effective attacking styles. “El Loco” is crazy about tactics, playing schemes, concepts and theories. There is no soccer strategy and tactic that Bielsa has not fully analyzed, contemplated, probed and experimented with. The man is a soccer savant, a futbol maniac with a border line pathological obsession with the game.

I have seen his maniacal intensity in person. Bielsa dictated a lecture for soccer coaches in Queens, New York several years back. I attended and witnessed how pedantic and detail-oriented Bielsa is when it comes to breaking down the game to each of its minute parts. The man knows his futbol, inside and out, up and down and diagonally.

Former Argentine national team captain Roberto Ayala and defender under Bielsa reportedly said: “Sometimes we wouldn't see any of the strikers, because he'd have them training at a different time, and it was the same with the midfielders. He's an innovator, and one of the people who I've learned most from during my career.”

Qatar seems to be on a “Beat U.S. Soccer Rampage,” and thus, it would not be surprising if they beat us, again and grabbed the “Mad Scientist.”

Will the reported $3 million offer be enough to catch Bielsa?

Brazil and Ecuador have increased their stakes at the prestigious travel show elevating their investments as Contributing Sponsors of the well attended event.

For five-time FIFA World Cup champions, Brazil, the theme of their travel promotion is clear: Brazil is the place to be for soccer lovers from now until the kick-off of the grand sporting event in 2014. As host country of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brazil is assured of a significant boost in tourism the year of the event.

But what about the years in between?

Well, the tourism board executives are hoping that world tourists have realized that the country has changed dramatically for the better.

Meanwhile, Ecuador has taken its global tourism campaign to the next level. The Ecuadorian tourism board officially launched the “Ecuador Love Life!” campaign today in Colombia. The $40 million campaign seeks to bring the message that Ecuador is a country where all tourists can come and love life to all the corners of the planet.

“The idea is that Ecuador presents itself to the world like a country that loves life and that we ask all those that visit our country to learn to love life,” said Freddy Ehlers Zurita, Ecuador's minister of tourism.

Ecuador is spending heavily in global promotions and marketing campaigns. They are confident that the country has the infrastructure, attractions and resources necessary to attract major foreign tourism. All they needed was that major marketing push.

Well, now they have it.

Brazil and Ecuador are definitely attractive destinations. But they are not the only destinations in Latin America that are generating more attention and capturing more foreign tourists. Costa Rica reigns supreme in Central America, Argentina continues to be dominant in South America and the Caribbean destinations are led by Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

A terrific mix.

All these countries will have a presence at this year’s travel show. Make sure to not to miss it.

New York, NY (February 12, 2011) - Middleweight boxing wonder, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez, the third best “Pound for Pound” boxer in the world (after Manny and Floyd), is on a mission to raise his profile and continue his meteoric ascendancy in the sport in 2011. But, beyond his personal goal, he is also determined to take action to address the issue of domestic violence.

The 35-year old lineal champion of the 160-pound category is preparing for his next bout against junior middleweight titlist Sergei Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KOs), 34, of Ukraine, on March 12 at Foxwoods Hotel and Casino in Mashantucket, Conn. The boxing card will be televised on HBO.

Martinez recently attended a press event at a Times Square restaurant in New York City to talk about the upcoming card. Beyond the fight, he revealed his thoughts and feelings about his childhood idol, the legendary Argentinean former boxing champion Carlos Monzon, and why he is so passionate about doing all he can to address the social plague of domestic violence against women.

“It would be great to be considered in the same esteem as Monzon,” said Martinez in an exclusive interview with LatinoTop10.com. “But that will be very difficult. In Argentina, Monzon is a myth and a legend. I am just glad to be appreciated by Argentinean fans and by all fans of the sport of boxing.”

Martinez, an uncharacteristically humble Argentinean champion, said he does not expect to receive the same degree of praise and adulation lavished on the legendary Monzon. “I will continue to idolize him just like any other boxing fan, but I don’t have any expectations to reach his level of adulation,” Martinez said.

Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs), said that he is determined to do all he can to eradicate domestic violence for two main reasons.

“Violence against women is simply unacceptable,” Martinez said. “Unfortunately, a great number of cases, too often involves athletes. I have always confided in my mother and consider myself to be a momma’s boy. Women must be respected, not abused.”

He added that doing something about this social problem would help to improve the image of the sport.

“It’s important because very few people who could do a lot about it, are doing something,” Martinez said. “When I say something many people can hear my message. This is particularly important in my line of work, where I know that some people look at us in a negative light. Is my way of trying to do something to clean up the image of boxing.”

Martinez began his campaign against domestic violence in earnest following the suicide of popular and undefeated Venezuelan boxer Edwin Valero in April, 2010. Valero reportedly committed suicide after he confessed killing his wife. He had a history of domestic violence against his wife and other women.

The rising boxing star won the middleweight championship defeating highly regarded Kelly Pavlik in April. He followed that big win with a spectacular knockout of Paul Williams in their rematch in November.

“I am currently fighting at a very high level and feel like I am ready to achieve big things,” Martinez said at the beginning of the press conference.

With his superb skills and unmatched conditioning, Martinez has already accomplished “big things,” but it sure looks like he can achieve even “bigger things,” and not just inside the ring.

Based on his conviction and seriousness, there is little doubt that Martinez just might be able to make a dent into a major societal problem and at the same time improve the image of the sport he loves.

Boxing can surely use a boxer like Martinez, a terrific talent and a role model.

Nueva York, NY - 3 de enero, 2011 – Después de la mega tormenta invernal que azotó a la Ciudad de Nueva York y toda la costa Este la semana pasada, me puse a pensar en las consecuencias de no estar preparado para lo peor en las carreteras ya sea en el invierno o en cualquier epoca del año.

Como todos saben, un promedio de 20 pulgadas de nieve cayeron a lo largo y lo ancho del area Tri-Estatal (Nueva York, New Jersey y Connecticut) según reportes de prensa asociada, afectando a millones de residentes que dependen de sus autos en su vida cotidiana, inclusive para satisfacer las necesidades mas básicas.

Yo tengo auto pero no necesito utilizarlo todos los dias.

Para los que si dependen de su coche, ellos no tuvieron mas remedio que aventurarse a las carreteras. Y como era de esperarse, muchos quedaron atascados en sus autos en medio de autopistas colmadas con olas de nieve. Otros sufrieron accidentes o tremendos sustos con sus autos, los cuales resbalaron o dieron vueltas literalmente como lo hacen los patinantes de hielo profesionales.

Quedar atollado en una carretera es una situación muy tensa y que amenaza el bienestar de los pasajeros. Muchos sufrieron de este peligro, incluso se reportaron casos en donde los pasajeros atrapados incluian niños y hasta un bebé de apenas 3 meses.

Para aquellos que quedaron atrapados en sus autos, las opciones para buscar auxilio fueron muy limitadas:

- Llamar a las autoridades y pedirles que se comuniquen con el departamento de transportación del estado y orar que este departamento tenga un servicio de rescate para conductores.

- Llamar a un servicio de remolcadores como el que ofrece la triple A, AAA (American Automobile Association, o asociasión automobilística estadounidense), el cual está disponible sólo para aquellos que son miembros.

- Abandonar sus autos y caminar a un lugar seguro.

- Permanecer en sus autos y esperar las horas necesarias hasta que alguien los rescate.

La aseguradora Allstate acaba de anunciar otra alternativa para brindar protección a los 35 millones de hogares estadounidenses que no cuentan con servicios de auxilio en la carretera..La empresa de seguros de auto anunció un nuevo programa que provee servicio de grua y otros servicios de auxilio para conductores en la carretera pero sin la necesidad de membrecía. O sea que cualquier persona que se inscriba en el programa tiene acceso al servicio.

El servicio Good Hands Roadside (Asistencia en Carretera Buenas Manos, en español) ofrece protección y solo requiere pago cuando exista la necesidad de utilizarlo. Dicho sea de paso, esto no ocurre frecuentemente. Varios estudios demuestran que el conductor promedio utiliza este servicio sólo una vez cada tres años.

Un conductor incrito en el programa y en necesidad de asistencia en la carretera puede llamar 1-800-ALLSTATE en cualquier momento y recibir acceso al servicio nacional de grúa y remolques de Allstate, el cual está disponible 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana.

Las tarifas de pago son fijas, $75 para un remolque de hasta 10 millas y $50 para otros servicios de auxilio en la carretera, como una llanta pinchada, una batería muerta, o las llaves del auto encerradas dentro del automóvil.

Como mencione antes, en mi caso personal, no tengo necesidad de manejar diariamente y puedo tener el lugo de dejar mi automovil parqueado y tomarme mi tiempo limpiandolo de ese material, blanco, que parece arena y que se derrite en las manos. Eso es lo que empeze hacer la misma noche del domingo cuando la espectacular e historica nevada empezo a caer.

¡Ya la mayor parte de la nieva se derritió! ¡Toda está de regreso a la normalidad!

Pero el servicio de Allstate sigue siendo una muy buena y nueva alternativa para tener a mano, en caso nos azote un desastre no esperado en las carreteras.

Bobby Convey returns to form and boosts the Earthquakes

Convey outshines New York Red Bulls "Galacticos" and propels San Jose into the MLS semifinals

HARRISON, NJ (November 4, 2010) - Robert Francis "Bobby" Convey, the on-again, off-again, American star, remembered that he still has game and went on to score two goals and serve an assist to propel the Earthquakes to the MLS Eastern Conference Championship.

Convey, the former D.C. United 17-year-old rookie phenom, the youngest player drafted into MLS, now 27, looked fully recovered from recurring knee injuries. Convey did it all in this game and thoroughly outshined the high profile New York Red Bulls "Galacticos," Thierry Henry, Juan Pablo Angel and Rafael Marquez. Convey scored two brilliant goals (6th and 76th minute), and made a skillful lob into the penalty area that allowed to Chris Wondolowski (81st minute) to head the ball over Bouna Coundoul.

San Jose went on to win the second leg of the series, 3-1.

The one bright spot for New York Red Bull was the play of 17 year-old Colombian American striker Juan Agudelo, who displayed tremendous dribbling skills, speed and guile. At the 78th minute, Agudelo penetrated the penalty area on the left side, dribbled past a defender, and sent a beautifully weighted lob to Angel who headed the ball into the San Jose net to make the score, 1-2.

Unfortunately for the Red Bulls, the effort was too little and too late.

French international Thierry Henry entered the game late into the match with only 10 minutes remaining and had a couple of chances that he thoroughly botched. Mexican star defender Rafael Marquez had a sub-par performance with marked inconsistency and mental lapses that contributed to the first San Jose goal.

Angel scored one goal and played with heart and determination, but was dismal on direct free kicks and lacked any creativity.

At the end, the Earthquakes workmen’s like performance, patience and determination, coupled with the brilliant play of Convey, was enough to eliminate the Red Bulls, 3-2 on aggregate (New York Red Bulls won the first match in San Jose, 1-0).

Convey seems to have returned to top form and reminded fans of the level he is capable of reaching. As American fans surely recall, Convey at one point came close to joining Tottenham Hotspur of the Premier League back in 2003 when the London club agreed to pay a $3 million transfer to MLS, but the transfer stalled when his work permit application was denied due to his lack of appearances with the senior U.S. national team.

San Jose will play the winner of the series between the Columbus Crew and Colorado Rapids.

Neymar is ideal player to lead rebirth of New York Cosmos

New York, NY (October 24, 2010) - Neymar, the sensational 18-year old star forward of Brazilian club Santos FC, epitomizes the best of Brazilian soccer, he is marvelously skillful, stylish, charismatic and exudes the joyous spirit of “el jogo bonito.” He has accomplished much with the Brazilian club and recently made his debut with the Brazilian national team, in New Jersey, of all places.

Top European clubs, like Chelsea, Real Madrid and Juventus, covet the youngster but a 30 million euros transfer fee and the desire of Santos to retain its top star have been stumbling roadblocks that, so far, have stood in the way.

Neymar's popularity and admiration is such that some observers have dared to compare him with the great Pele. Like Neymar, Pele also started his career with Santos FC, and enjoys a close, deeply personal friendship with the young phenom.

Which brings me to one of Pele's latest business activities: promoting the return of the legendary club New York Cosmos.

As some of us of certain age recall, the Cosmos reigned supreme in the late 70s and early 80s as the most glamorous and exciting club in the world. The team led by Pele and Franz Beckenbauer, among other world class players, won several NASL titles, travelled the world, and captured the hearts and minds of U.S. fans, who were notoriously cold to the world's most popular sport.

After the league folded, so did the Cosmos.

A group led by British investors, including Paul Kemsley, a former vice chairman for Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League, purchased the rights to the Cosmos name with the intention of having the team join Major League Soccer in 2013. The recent announcement took many by surprise. Reactions to the announcement range from those who welcome the idea and think the ownership group is professional and serious, to those that profess skepticism and doubt that the group has the discipline and wherewithal to follow-through with the project.

One thing is for sure: the group has outstanding guerilla marketing operators, hailing from companies such as Nike and major advertising agencies, who are experts at creating excitement and buzz. The prospective club has been generating lots of traffic on social media outlets and producing hot word of mouth based on their astute use of Pele's image and likeness.

Most recently, the group plastered a giant outdoor ad featuring Pele in Cosmos gear in the middle of New York's Times Square. The group also staged a well attended Cosmos ball giveaway fan celebration at Planet Hollywood, also in the Times Square area.

All of the hoopla and marketing pizzaz is great. But, sooner rather than later, fans -specially New York fans- will start to ask for real, concrete actions that can lead to the creation of a real team with real world class stars, real coaches, a real stadium and really good play.

That is where Neymar comes into the picture.

What better way is there for the investor group to dramatically show they are serious than to leverage Pele's father-like relationship with Neymar and then dig into their pockets to extract 30 million euros in order to acquire the world's hottest young star? (Once they acquire him they can let him play on loan with other clubs until the the team is ready to play in MLS).

Pele was the face of first generation of the New York Cosmos. Why not have Neymar be the new face of the new New York Cosmos?

New York City is a big city with national and global appeal. In order to succeed, a team of any sport, needs one, preferably two or more, marquee name superstars.

The Yankees used to have Reggie Jackson now they have A-Rod and Jeter, the Jets used to have Joe Namath now they have Mark Sanchez, the Knicks used to have Patrick Ewing now they have Amare Stoudemire. The same thing must happen with the Cosmos.

The investor group is doing well on several fronts.

The prospective club has set up academies in New York and Los Angeles and asserts that it has 2,000 youth players between the ages of 8 and 18 wearing the Cosmos colors and logo. The idea is to develop a players farm system similar to those of the best clubs in the world.

The group is in advanced discussions with MLS. However, they must be able to work astutely with the New York Mets (baseball) ownership group (Wilpon family), which in the past has expressed interest in launching an MLS team based in their Queens, New York site.

Return of the Cosmos gets broad news coverage.

If the group makes the wrong moves, the Mets ownership group is capable of giving them a “red card” and put them out of the game.

Going back to my main point: Despite all the recent “scandals” [a verbal fight with the Santos coach and a visit by prostitutes] signing Neymar would be a powerful step in the right direction. With Neymar on board, the group gets added credibility, more negotiating leveraging power, and is better positioned to move forward.

Neymar made his debut with the full Brazil national team at the New Meadowlands Stadium (formerly Giants Stadium) in New Jersey, the same site where the old New York Cosmos used to play. Could this be just a coincidence? A prophetic event? A sign of things to come for Neymar?

Having Neymar lead the new New York Cosmos would be a truly inspiring passing of the torch from Pele to the apparent “New Pele.”

USA vs China boxing showdown in NYC's Chinatown

Miguel Cartagena and other American 2012 Olympic hopefuls face Chinese team

New York, NY (September 24, 2010) - American Olympic boxing hopefuls, including highly touted prospect, Miguel Cartagena, will face off against the Chinese Olympic team this Friday, October 1st, at New York City’s Chinatown.

The highly unusual showdown between two of the best Olympic boxing nations is the result of the efforts of renowned boxing promoter Dino Duva. Mr. Duva has developed a working relationship with the Chinese Boxing Federation providing them with training camps and positioning himself to sign and promote Chinese boxers once they decide to become professional prizefighters.

The boxing card will feature bouts in 10 men's weight classes and three women's weight classes. One of the most anticipated fights will be the one featuring flyweight Cartagena. The 18 year-old prospect won the silver medal at this year's national championships. The Philadelphia born fighter of Puerto Rican heritage looks poised and ready to make a big splash at the 2012 Olympics in London and later on as a pro.

"My expectation is to win," Cartagena said at a recent press conference to announce the highly unique and special card. "I think it's a good experience for the Chinese boxers and I will draw as much from this experience as I can."

As for the Olympics, Cartagena would simply say that he is focused on the day-to-day training and does not dream or worry about the future. “I just do the work and the rest will take care of itself” said Cartagena with a rare tone of maturity unusual in an 18 year-old young man.

Also on the U.S. team will be national silver medalists Diego Hurtado (108 pounds), Eric Flores (132), Santos Vasquez (108), Alex Martin (152), Jesse Hart (165), and Danny Kelly (201).

"I'm really excited about this event," said Duva's father, legendary Hall of Fame trainer Lou Duva. "The Chinese team has excellent credentials, and reports are that America has an outstanding group of fighters who hope to restore Team USA."

Two Chinese team boxers were present at the promotional press conference, super middleweight Olympian Zhang Jianting and heavyweight Olympic silver medalist Zhang Zhilei. The latter is considered by Duva as one of the top heavyweight professional prospects in the world.

"The Chinese boxers have already reached a good level. With hard work and good competition like this, we will work to get to a higher level," Zhang said through a translator. "The coaches have been giving us good workouts and we will be ready for good competition."

The card takes place this Friday, October 1st at Capitale, in the heart of New York City's Chinatown.

Rafael Marquez: 'Partido contra Galaxy demostrará nivel que se puede alcanzar en la MLS'

Montclair University, Montclair, NJ (21 de septiembre, 2010) - El defensor mexicano Rafael Márquez, quien lleva ya casi dos meses con su nuevo club New York Red Bull de la MLS, dijo que el partido del viernes contra el Galaxy de Los Angeles, pondrá en evidencia el nivel de juego que se puede llegar a tener en la liga profesional de los Estados Unidos.

El “Kaiser de Michoacan” descartó que exista una rivalidad especial con el astro estadounidense Landon Donovan o con el inglés David Beckham, y puso más enfasis en lo que significa tener a cuatro jugadores franquicia en el terreno de juego. “Esperemos que sea un partido abierto y sea un espectáculo para la afición,” acoto Marquez a LatinoTop10.com. “Es un partido que puede demostrar que aquí [en la MLS] puede haber un buen nivel.”

Recuperado de un golpe y en optimas condicion fisica

Marquez parece haberse recuperado bien de un golpe sufrido en el tobillo derecho, el pasado 11 de septiembre en duelo ante Colorado. Pese a la molestia, el ex zaguero del Barcelona jugó el jueves pasado contra Dallas.

"He tenido más trabajo (en el gimnasio). Me siento mejor ahora. Creo que puedo ayudar a mi equipo más. No hice ningún entrenamiento antes del partido con Dallas y eso me ayudó", dijo el ex jugador del FC Barcelona de España y el Monaco de Francia.

Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant boost inaugural Nike World Basketball Festival in New York City

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY (August 15, 2010) — The inaugural Nike World Basketball Festival concluded today with an entertaining doubleheader at Madison Square Garden. Before a sellout crowd of 19,763 Team USA easily beat France, 86-55, and Puerto Rico defeated China, 92 to 76.

"First time I've been in the Garden and the people have been cheering for me," quipped former Detroit Pistons star Chauncey Billups, chosen as the USA vs. France match MVP. Billups is usually booed by the pro-Knicks MSG crowd for his exploits against the Knicks during his Pistons days. Rudy Gay scored 19 points, Billups added 17, and Rajon Ronda had 6 assists. Danny Granger played poorly, did not score, and fouled out of the game. He could be the last cut the team makes before playing in the FIBA World Championship.

France played without NBA star Tony Parker, who chose not to play for Les Bleus, but was on site and watched the game with his celebrity wife, Eva Longoria-Parker.

Beyond the games at MSG and Rucker Park in Harlem, the Nike World Basketball Festival penetrated every aspect of the powerful NYC media and grassroots promotional platform. The always creative and cutting edge Nike event branding and images were splattered all over Manhattan and much of the five boroughs. With the presence of NBA stars like Kevin Durant and Rajon Rondo on Team USA, and Nike stars making promotional appearances, including Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, the Nike publicity machine was in full gear. The messaging was carried out way beyond the confines of the media capital of the world by the live, on-site coverage of the event by news media professionals from every corner of the globe.

Nike did it, again.

The six-day event was well worth the “media circus and the distractions,” said U.S. National Team head coach Mike Krzyzewski to LatinoTop10.com Saturday following the team's last training session prior to the match against France. “It was hard for the team to fully focus on training and getting mentally prepared for the game but Nike ought to be congratulated for celebrating the [basketball] world game.”

Regarding the on field play, Coach K said that this team is very different from the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team” that featured Jordan, Malone, Ewing and many other stars. With this version of the Team USA, “there is not as much room for error,” he said. “Like a loose ball, the wrong foul when the other team is in the bonus. Little things like that. The US team departs Monday for Madrid and a four-day training camp that starts on Tuesday. The team will play exhibition games against Lithuania, Spain and Greece before they open the world tournament in Turkey against Croatia on August 28.

The Americans have not won the world crown since 1994 at Toronto. The team took home the bronze at the 2004 Athens Olympics and earned the gold in 2008 at Beijing.
