British Columbia (AP) -- The past two weeks are likely to be a vivid blur in the memories of Tim Thomas, Roberto Luongo and the players who staggered off their final cross-continent flights Tuesday to put a merciful end to the Stanley Cup finals.

The Vancouver Canucks have traded home victories of increasing intensity with the Boston Bruins for six games, with their veteran goalies dueling before a backdrop of bites, taunts, dangerous injuries and gut-wrenching road losses. The Presidents' Trophy-winning Canucks and the profoundly resilient Bruins will play their 107th and final game when their draining seasons finally end in Game 7 on Wednesday night.

Both teams are ready to enjoy their drastically shortened summers, but nobody can bear the thought of coming this far without drinking from the Stanley Cup.

"Everything in the past is in the past," Vancouver center Ryan Kesler said. "If we win tomorrow, we become legends."

Although they've lost three of their last four to the surging Bruins, the Canucks are ready to reap their reward for grinding out the NHL's best regular-season record. They get to play Game 7 at home -- and home-ice advantage means more than anybody expected in a series that's otherwise been utterly unpredictable.

The home team has won every game to date, but Boston has done it better than the favored Canucks. While the Bruins blew out Vancouver by a combined 17-3, the Canucks eked out three one-goal victories.

The Canucks still can win their first NHL title after flopping in their first attempt Monday in Boston, while the Bruins are closing strong in their attempt to end a 39-year Stanley Cup drought.

"When we're in the garage or driveway playing as a kid and you're fantasizing ... you're saying to yourself, 'Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals," said Thomas, the likely Conn Smythe Trophy winner after allowing just eight Vancouver goals in six games. "You're not saying Game 6, you know? So this is really what every kid dreams about."

Thomas and the Bruins will attempt to become the first team in NHL history to win a Game 7 three times in the same postseason after beating Montreal and Tampa Bay earlier. The Original Six franchise has never played a Game 7 in the finals, not even while losing its last five trips to the championship round since 1972.

Vancouver was stretched to the limit by defending champion Chicago in the first round. The Canucks were here in 1994, when Mark Messier's New York Rangers beat them 3-2 in Game 7 -- and Vancouver hadn't been back to the finals since.

Both teams have played under playoff stress this spring, but no pressure in hockey can match the intensity of a close third period in Game 7 of the finals, when one superb play or a single mistake can change a player's reputation forever. Anybody who fears that scenario didn't show it after Tuesday's workouts at Rogers Arena.

"This is playoff hockey at its finest," Vancouver center Manny Malhotra said. "No one wants to budge on home ice. This entire series has been a full playoff experience, filled with a lot of different types of games."

And nobody exemplifies this series' strange duality better than Luongo. Vancouver's enigmatic goalie has been outstanding at home, allowing just two goals in three games while posting two 1-0 shutouts, but the Canucks' $10 million man was horrific in Boston, giving up 15 goals in slightly more than four periods while getting pulled twice, including from Game 6.

Perhaps after one final head-clearing walk on the Vancouver seawall, his meditation of choice before two key victories this postseason, he'll get his last chance at redemption on the same ice where he backstopped Canada to Olympic gold last year.

The series' exhausting travel schedule -- Boston has made five cross-continent flights, while Vancouver had a mere four -- hasn't ratcheted down the intensity late in games.

The Canucks exude a confidence that must be rooted in their strong regular season, not their years of playoff struggles before this breakthrough. Daniel Sedin even guaranteed a Game 7 victory to the Vancouver Sun.

They'll probably have to attempt it in another nail-biting game in Vancouver, where the Canucks won all three games with goals in the third period or overtime.

The Canucks' superior talent has been obvious throughout the season, with Henrik and Daniel Sedin -- the NHL's last two scoring champions -- leading an aggressive style that showed excitement can win in a league too often dominated by trap defenses.

Since the NHL's first wave of expansion in 1968, no team has won the Stanley Cup while being outscored in the postseason. The Canucks almost certainly will be the first to do it if they win Game 7: The NHL's highest-scoring team in the regular season has been outscored 65-58 in the playoffs, and Boston has a 19-8 edge in the first six games.

Both teams could draw emotion from injured players if they choose. Boston rallied around forward Nathan Horton after his season-ending concussion in Game 3, while the Canucks will play Game 7 without top defenseman Dan Hamhuis, lost in Game 1 to an undisclosed injury, and forward Mason Raymond, who broke a bone in his back on a hit by Boston's Johnny Boychuk early in Game 6.

Horton was the Bruins' inspiration in Game 4, and he attended Game 6. He even made the cross-continent trip to Vancouver on Tuesday to support his teammates, who appeared touched by the gesture. The Bruins have set up Horton's locker and gear in the visitors' dressing room.

"If the doctor let him, he would play tomorrow," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "We all know that's not the right decision to make, but that's the way he's feeling. He wants to play so badly."

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- The Boston Bruins couldn't have enjoyed the scenery late Saturday night while their team bus crawled through the raucous street party that consumed downtown Vancouver after the Canucks moved halfway to their first NHL title.

Maybe the Stanley Cup finals' move to the East Coast will finally give the Bruins something to celebrate.

With Game 3 looming Monday night at TD Garden after a quick cross-continent trip Sunday, the Bruins realize the jam they brought back from Canada isn't sweet.

Only four teams have rallied from an 0-2 finals deficit in 46 tries. Boston must win four of the next five games to beat the Canucks, the NHL's best regular-season team and the winner of seven of their past eight playoff games.

"We'll be disappointed, and we're allowed to be," said 43-year-old Mark Recchi, who ended an 11-game goal drought with a power-play score in Game 2. "But we'll take a lot of positives out of these games. When we get off that plane, we'll forget all about it. We'll worry about Monday, and doing our job at home."

Recchi is right: The Bruins probably shouldn't spend any time contemplating the historic depth of their plight.

Boston has rallied from an 0-2 deficit to win a series just once in 27 tries -- although it happened in the first round of this postseason against Montreal.

"Now is not the time to squeeze your stick and to panic," Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron said after the team arrived in Boston on Sunday afternoon. "It's time to go back to what's been giving us success. ... Squeezing our sticks is not going to help us at all. We've got to go out there, play our game, make sure we play loose, and at the same time play hard and desperate."

The Bruins are still smarting from their late struggles in Game 2, in which they lost for just the third time in 41 games this season when they had a lead after two periods. Vancouver dominated the third period for the second straight finals game, with Daniel Sedin tying it midway through before Alex Burrows won it with his thrilling wraparound goal 11 seconds into overtime.

"We have four lines that go out there and play the same way," said Sedin, the NHL scoring champion. "We get pucks deep. We forecheck really hard. It wears teams down. It's been like this the whole season. It's nothing new for us. I think when we're at our best, we usually have a lot of success in the third period."

Coach Claude Julien will remind his Bruins that they largely played well in two one-goal losses. Their defense held the Canucks' top line scoreless for the first five periods of the series, bullying Daniel and Henrik Sedin into ineffectiveness.

What's more, Boston still hasn't lost a Game 3 in the postseason, even winning a pressure-packed game at Montreal in the first round after losing the first two games at home.

"The positive is we basically lost both games by one goal," Boston forward David Krejci said. "That hurts, but we know we're in the game and we know we can do it."

Yet cracks already have appeared on Boston's surface in the finals.

The Sedin twins' line broke through for the tying goal in the third period of Game 2 with a beautiful passing display after forcing a turnover by workhorse Bruins captain Zdeno Chara.

The same line was on the ice to start overtime -- thanks to a nifty bit of gamesmanship by Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault, who ordered his top line onto the ice moments before the puck dropped -- when Burrows scooted past Chara, around goalie Tim Thomas and behind the net for the electrifying winner.

"I thought we took over (with) five minutes left in the second period," captain Henrik Sedin said. "You could see they were maybe a little bit tired, and that's when we came hard at them."

Chara and partner Dennis Seidenberg have played superbly throughout the postseason, and Chara was on the ice for more than 28 minutes against Vancouver in Game 2. But the Sedins weren't alone in thinking Chara appeared to tire as the game went on.

Vancouver is trying to wear out the 6-foot-9 star by sticking to a strategy of constant physical collisions, even if the Canucks take the worst of those crashes. By finishing their checks on the hulking defenseman, the Canucks believe they can wear him -- and it showed in Chara's numerous misplays and turnovers.

"I guess all of a sudden you lose a game, and now we're going to start wondering about certain players," Julien said in Chara's defense. "I think it's really about our whole team. It's not about Zdeno."

Yet Julien already made a move to rest Chara, taking him out of the slot and putting him back on the point, where he'll take less punishment.

"I don't think we played very well, to what our standards are all about," Julien added. "I think the decision-making, the puck management, it's what's costing us games. When you turn pucks over in the neutral zone, this is a team that thrives on it. We know that they thrive on it, yet we kept turning pucks over in the neutral zone."

If they hope to get back in the finals, the Bruins will need goals from players who didn't grow up in the Vancouver area. British Columbia natives Milan Lucic and Recchi scored in Game 3, but Boston has just three goals in its last three games going back to the conference finals.

That's not enough help for goalie Tim Thomas, who has his own problems: He was caught too far away from his net on both of the Canucks' late goals in Game 2. The Vezina Trophy finalist isn't about to change his aggressive style, but the Canucks might have figured out how to manipulate it to their advantage.

What's more, Roberto Luongo has been solid for the Canucks, stopping 64 of the 66 shots he faced. The Olympic gold medal-winning goalie is two games from his first Stanley Cup title, but the Canucks' former captain is determined to keep Vancouver focused on the work ahead in Boston.

"That's what playoffs are all about," Luongo said. "You don't want to get too high after a win and too low after a loss.

"(Game 2) is a big win for us, but you've almost immediately got to put it behind you and start focusing on the next one. We know going into Boston, it's not going to be easy. We want to make sure we're focusing on the next one, not on what we just accomplished."

After a dramatic victory in the opener, the Vancouver Canucks will try to take a 2-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Finals when they host the Boston Bruins tonight at Rogers Arena.

The Western Conference champions grabbed the early lead in this best-of-seven series by edging the Bruins, 1-0, in Wednesday's Game 1 matchup in British Columbia. Boston will be desperate to take tonight's Game 2 encounter or risk heading back home in an 0-2 hole. The Bruins will host the third and fourth tilts of this series with Game 3 set for Monday at TD Garden.

The Bruins and Canucks were scoreless for over 59 minutes on Wednesday before Raffi Torres scored with just 18.5 seconds remaining in the third period to give Vancouver the 1-0 victory.

Although the winning goal belonged to Torres, Canucks forward Ryan Kesler made an excellent play to start the decisive sequence.

Kesler stripped defenseman Johnny Boychuk near the blue line to start a tic- tac-toe play. He then fired the puck across the ice to Jannik Hansen above the right circle, and Hansen squeezed a pass into the slot for Torres, who got behind a defender to beat Boston goaltender Tim Thomas into the left side of the net.

"It was just as exciting as an overtime goal," said Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo, who made 36 saves for a shutout.

Kesler's secondary assist marked his 19th point (7 goals, 12 assists) of the postseason, leaving him behind only teammate Henrik Sedin and Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis in playoff scoring. Sedin has 21 points, while St. Louis of the eliminated Lightning had 10 goals and 10 assists.

Thomas, who had been so good through 59 minutes and 41.5 seconds, almost got his right skate down in time to stop Torres' shot. Instead, his final line read 33 saves on 34 shots.

"It's obviously a nice goal by them," said Boston head coach Claude Julien. "They kind of took the game over in the third period and obviously found a way to win it with a late goal."

At the other end, Luongo shut the Bruins out. The Canucks netminder made 36 saves, including 17 in an active first period and 10 in the third to keep the door closed.

Until the goal, the story of Game 1 had been about missed chances: The teams combined to go 0-for-12 on the power play in the first two periods, having better luck finding each other after the whistle than finding the back of the net.

"At one point, I thought we would be playing all night here," said Luongo.

Vancouver has never won a Stanley Cup title and is in the Finals for the first time since 1994 when they were ousted by the New York Rangers in seven games. However, the Canucks, who won the Presidents' Trophy as the club with the best regular season record this season, have now won 10 of their last 13 games.

"Our confidence is pretty high right now," said Torres, "but we know, like Kes (Kesler) said, it's just one game. We have to carry that into Game 2."

Of course, the Canucks are not only carrying the hopes of a city, but also a nation considering a Canadian team hasn't lifted the Cup since Montreal defeated Wayne Gretzky's Los Angeles Kings in 1993.

The Bruins, meanwhile, have won five Stanley Cups, but none since 1972. They are 0-5 in the Finals since then, the last loss coming to Edmonton in 1990. Boston is 5-21 in Cup Finals games since the '72 championship and has lost 11 of its last 12 contests on the NHL's biggest stage.

Vancouver defenseman Dan Hamhuis was injured in Game 1 when he delivered a hip check on Boston's Milan Lucic in the second period. Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault said that Hamhuis is day-to-day with the undisclosed injury.

Hamhuis, who was signed to a six-year, $27 million deal by Vancouver last summer, could be replaced by Andrew Alberts if he is unable to go tonight.

In other injury news, Vancouver's Manny Malhotra has been out since March 16 with an eye injury and is day-to-day. Malhotra was hit in the left eye with a puck and although the injury was originally expected to keep him out for the remainder of the year, it is now believed he could return at some point in the Finals.

The Canucks and Bruins have never faced each other in the playoffs and the clubs only met once this season with Boston notching a 3-1 decision at Rogers Arena on Feb. 26.

Vancouver boasts a solid 8-3 record at Rogers Arena in these playoffs, while the Bruins have a 5-4 record as the visiting team this spring.

Daniel Sedin absently scratched his red playoff beard, thinking back on a decade of struggle and setbacks before the Vancouver Canucks reached the Stanley Cup finals against Boston.

Down the hallway, his identical twin rubbed his identical beard exactly the same way.

Henrik Sedin was considering a more pressing problem, though: Now that the Swedish superstars are finally close enough to touch the Stanley Cup, how do they get it away from hulking defenseman Zdeno Chara and the bruising Bruins?

"We've had a lot of challenges along the way to get here, but he's the biggest one yet -- literally, I guess," said Henrik Sedin, last season's NHL MVP. "It's going to be exciting to see what happens, because we haven't played each other enough to know those guys very well. It's unpredictable."

The only sure bet is that one championship drought will end for one long-suffering hockey-loving city after the Canucks face Boston in the Stanley Cup finals, starting in Game 1 on Wednesday night in Vancouver.

The Canucks have never won it all, falling in their only two previous finals appearances in four decades of existence. Their ever-anxious city is buzzing with anticipation, with hundreds of fans filling the sidewalks and bars of Granville Street in blue-and-green jerseys in the days before the finals.

They're breathlessly following the Sedin twins, who finally turned their talent into team success during a spectacular season in Vancouver. With impressive depth and solid defense backing their star-studded top lines, the Canucks won the Presidents' Trophy with 54 victories and 117 points before winning nine of their past 12 playoff games heading into the finals.

The Canucks might be the best team ever assembled on Canada's West Coast, yet they realize they haven't done anything until they raise the Cup.

"With the parity that is in the league, you've got to do a lot of things right for a long time," Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said. "I do believe you've got to get some bounces, you get the bounces because you've been doing things right for a long time. I believe that Vancouver is due for 40 years of good bounces."

The Bruins have lost five straight trips to the finals since Bobby Orr led them to their last title in 1972, and haven't made it at all since 1990.

Yet with only moderate expectations and a largely star-free roster featuring no scorers in the NHL's top 25, Boston survived a rough Eastern Conference run during which it faced elimination twice in the past three rounds. The Bruins coolly won two Game 7 showdowns, both on clutch goals by Nathan Horton, earning the right to travel thousands of miles to the opposite coast for a shot at their ultimate goal.

"We definitely earned the right to be here with everything we've gone through," Horton said Tuesday after the Bruins' first practice in Vancouver. "I had never even been in the playoffs before, so maybe I don't know any better. I'm getting some real goosebumps now, though."

These teams know little about each other, meeting just once in the regular season thanks to the NHL's unbalanced schedule. They've had several days to study film and scouting reports, but they know they won't fully appreciate the Sedins' brilliance or Chara's ice-clogging force until they see it up close.

Chara clearly intrigues the Sedins and their fellow Vancouver forwards. The Canucks struggled offensively in the second round against Nashville's shutdown defensemen, Shea Weber and Ryan Suter, but bounced back with a dominant series against San Jose in the conference finals.

Henrik Sedin is the league's leading playoff scorer with 21 points, while Ryan Kesler has 18 -- and Daniel Sedin a mere 16.

"There's a few big defensemen in the league, but he's obviously the biggest and the best," Daniel Sedin said. "We'll see how it goes, but we see shutdown players in every game, so that part isn't any different."

The Boston defense is equally fascinated by the Sedins, who joined the Canucks in 1999 in a masterpiece of draft-day maneuvering by Brian Burke. After a handful of difficult seasons, the twins returned from the 2004-05 lockout with an all-out attitude that allowed them to develop into the offensive virtuosos that are dominating the Western Conference.

"There's only a few players in the league that have been together so long, and obviously them being brothers, it helps," Chara said. "Growing up together, they know each other extremely well. They know where they are even without looking at each other, so it makes it challenging to play against them. We just have to try to take as much away from them as we can."

Boston is hoping both teams stay at full strength for most of the series. The Bruins have been the NHL's best 5-on-5 team all season long, but their power play is in a horrific playoff slump, scoring on just 8 percent of its chances compared to the Canucks' 28 percent efficiency led by the Sedins.

For all their differences in personnel and philosophy, Boston and Vancouver share one similarity: strong veteran goaltending.

Just how similar? Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas have the same 2.29 goals-against average in the postseason.

Luongo bounced back from a one-game benching in the first round to shut down San Jose's offensive talent in the Western Conference finals, refocusing his mental game on the fly. Thomas has been a bit more inconsistent for Boston -- but when the 37-year-old survivor has been good, such as in his two shutouts or any number of jaw-dropping big saves, the Bruins' opponents have been doomed.

"It's a good battle for me," Luongo said. "Obviously you focus more on the guys shooting at you, but you know who's on the other side over there, and I have a lot of respect for him."

Either Henrik Sedin or Chara will join Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom as the only European born-and-trained NHL captains to raise the Stanley Cup when it's all over. Sedin won't allow himself to think about the prospect until the Canucks take the four steps necessary to get there.

"This year, we want it more than anyone else," Henrik Sedin said. "We don't need anyone to come in and tell us how to win it. We know what we have to do."

BOSTON (AP) -- There's a procedure in the NHL for a player coming back from a concussion: The doctors put it off as long as necessary, and the coaches keep it quiet as long as possible.

So it was with Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron on Monday, when he returned for his first full practice since a May 6 concussion that kept him out of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. Boston coach Claude Julien would not comment on Bergeron's availability for Tuesday night's second game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"We're going through the protocol of what he has to go through," Julien told reporters after the off-day practice. "There's not much more to update you guys on except that I think, when he is ready to go, I think you guys will know it. It's just something that you can't predict how quickly, or how slow it's going to be.

"You see him going through what you saw him going through, today's skating. But that's protocol, and right now, we're not ready to make any comments because he's just going through those stages."

Bergeron, who has had one more limited workout, skated on his own on Monday with general manager Peter Chiarelli watching, and then took part in non-contact power play and penalty-killing drills with his teammates. Julien has said it is up to the doctors when Bergeron returns to play, and it won't be until he is 100 percent.

"You've seen him skate now for a few days and that's pretty much it," the coach said. "We don't have much else to report because there isn't much else to report in regards to him."

Lightning coach Guy Boucher isn't buying it.

"We prepared for him playing for the first game, so we're preparing for him," he said, comparing it to facing the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round with Sidney Crosby out. "We know how important he is to the team. He's a great player. He's a great individual. And that usually has a tendency to uplift your team in terms of confidence. ... It changes a lot of things in terms of the way the game is going to develop.

"So we're expecting him to be there for the opening faceoff. And if he's not, which I highly doubt ... I think he's going to be there."

Bergeron had consecutive 70-point seasons for the Bruins before a severe concussion that knocked him out just 10 games into 2007-08 and limited him to 64 games the following year. He had just returned to form this season, scoring 22 goals with 35 assists, and was Boston's top playoff scorer with 12 points before he was hurt in the finale of the second-round sweep of Philadelphia on a hit by Claude Giroux.

Bergeron was out on Saturday night, when he was replaced by rookie Tyler Seguin; he scored his first career playoff goal.

On Monday, Seguin worked with the power-play unit in practice.

"I think it's just about being ready, and I think that's why they threw me out there this morning," said Seguin, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the draft but had been scratched in each of the Bruins' first 11 playoff games. "It's the first time I've skated with the power play in over a month and a half. It's definitely nice being out there, and moving the puck around and getting my feet wet."

Julien would not say whether Seguin would go back to being a scratch if Bergeron returns, but the rookie was hoping for his teammate's return anyway.

"Everyone feels good that he's making great strides, and he looked pretty good out there to me. So it's going to be great to have him back soon," Seguin said. "I want to stay in the lineup and contribute, but I'm getting ready for anything. I'm staying prepared and try not to think about it too much. I want to focus on my game because whenever the opportunity arises, I want to be right there to capitalize on it."

The Bruins are also without Marc Savard, who like Bergeron had been among the team's top scorers when healthy. He has been out with a concussion since January -- the second straight season he has missed time after a hit to the head.

"Obviously, those two players are very, very good -- some of the best players in the league," Lightning center Nate Thompson said. "We're preparing as if (Bergeron) is playing. It's a shame if he can't. Our league is better off with everyone out there."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Predators coach Barry Trotz says the Vancouver Canucks are playing games to draw penalties that just aren't fouls, so he's going on the offensive.

By defending the officials.

"That's gamesmanship, and I understand that," Trotz said Wednesday. "It's also a little bit putting the referee in a tough spot. We have the best referees. If you're going to make them look bad, I don't think that's needed in the game."

It's a big of gamesmanship by Trotz, but the Predators aren't happy with two penalties called in Tuesday night's 3-2 overtime win by the Canucks. The victory gave Vancouver a 2-1 lead in the series and home-ice advantage again in their Western Conference semifinal series.

The Predators claim that Ryan Kesler bent over to hold Nashville captain Shea Weber's stick in his belly, drawing a hooking call in overtime that set up his game-winning goal. Kesler's first goal of the postseason came 60 seconds into the second period off a power play set up when Jerred Smithson moved his stick while in front of Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo, who snapped his head back.

Trotz said he watched several replays of the Weber penalty and thought Kesler embellished how much hooking actually took place. Trotz also looked at Smithson's penalty and didn't see a foul there either. The coach wasn't happy Wednesday.

"He just moved his stick over Lounge's mask. All of a sudden, after the stick goes to the other side, his head kicks back and gets a penalty," Trotz said.

The Canucks disagree and say both calls legitimate penalties.

Luongo said the complaints are part of hockey. The goalie said there was contact with his mask, even though the stick doesn't appear to hit Luongo's mask on replays.

"I just turned my head. I mean I didn't throw myself on the floor or anything like that," Luongo said. "You can ask Smithson. He did make contact with my head."

Kesler denied any acting on his part to draw the hooking call.

"That's the rule. I mean, you get your stick parallel to the ice, and it was in my gut. Obviously, he was impeding my progress. That's the right call. I don't make the calls, so it's not my job," Kesler said.

Weber will only say it's unfortunate the game ended with a call like that, though he also said the Predators didn't deserve to win. The Predators were outshot 47-30 and went 0 of 3 on the power play that generated so few shots their own fans alternately yelled at them to shoot and later booed.

Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault is steering clear when it comes to officiating. His Canucks finally broke through with the man advantage against the Predators. The Canucks now are 2 of 10 in the series and 3 of 26 overall this season against Nashville after having the league's best power play in the regular season.

"I'm not going to comment on this one. Maybe on some other ones, but not this one," Vigneault said to laughs.

The Canucks might be working harder to draw penalties, but Vigneault said they focus on the game and on playing.

"There's comments about referees, I'll let (general manager) Mike (Gilles) handle that. He does a pretty good job," Vigneault said.

Gilles criticized uneven officiating in the Canucks' opening-series win over Chicago.

For all the talk of penalties, the NHL's best team in the regular season finally has the upper hand in a series where each of the first three games were decided by one goal with the last two going to overtime. Game 4 on Thursday night is a must-win for the Predators if they hope to bring this series back to Nashville one last time.

"There's pressure on us right now for sure," Nashville forward Patric Hornqvist said. "We have to win the next game. If not, we're not in a great position. If we win the next game, we get the momentum."

The Predators will be playing without forward Steve Sullivan in Game 4. Trotz didn't have an update on Sullivan because the forward was meeting with a doctor, but the coach said Sullivan will not play. That means Trotz will either play veteran J.P. Dumont or give Colin Wilson his first minutes of the postseason.

Hornqivst and linemate Sergei Kostitsyn led Nashville in goals this season, but neither has scored a point in this series. Neither has center Mike Fisher.

"Everybody have to take it to the net," Hornqvist said. "We're not playing very good right now. We know what we're going to do ... and hopefully we can get some chances, some goals."

The Canucks simply want to put away a game and avoid what they call the lucky bounces that have allowed Nashville to score late goals to send the past two games into overtime.

"Obviously, there's a lot of attention," Vigneault said. "There's pressure. We're all aware of it, and we expect our guys to be able to handle it, stay in the moment and make the right plays."

DETROIT (AP) -- The San Jose Sharks have been skating hard to the net against the Red Wings, stopping just short of Jimmy Howard while delivering plenty of sprayed ice -- the so-called hockey snow shower.

Are they bugging the Detroit goaltender?

"Nope," he insisted Tuesday.

Part of the game?

"Yep," Howard said. "They're just trying to get under my skin. I don't care. They can come in and pitchfork me all they want. They can do whatever they want. They're not going to take me off my game."

If Howard gets pitchforked -- speared by the blade of a stick -- the Sharks will get called for a penalty if the officials see it happen. If skate blades spray ice in Howard's face, well, he'll probably have to live with it.

The Red Wings have done some lobbying to get San Jose called for unsportsmanlike penalties for what has appeared to be gamesmanship in the Western Conference semifinal they trail 0-2. Game 3 is Wednesday night at Joe Louis Arena.

Sharks coach Todd McLellan said he is not pushing his players to rattle Howard with snow showers.

"I have no time for gimmicks and circus acts," McLellan said. "I will address it with my players. My feedback from them is that there's no intent. We are going to the blue paint. No one is going to take that away from us. We're going to stop in the blue paint and we're going to stand there.

"I guess we have to be a little more cautious about where we stop in the blue paint."

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said he told his players to focus on being disciplined and determined and not sweat the ice sprays.

"We have a general manager and he looks after that stuff," Babcock said.

The Sharks aren't apologizing for their actions, pointing out Howard has failed to secure pucks at times and that has created scoring opportunities in the crease that they've tried to take advantage of.

At the other end of the rink, the Red Wings might try to annoy Antti Niemi with similar tactics.

"Maybe we should start snow showering," Detroit forward Danny Cleary said. "The referees got to make a decision. We don't want them doing that. If you let them get away with it, they're going to do it again. So, you have to take liberties."

Niemi just hopes it doesn't happen when the puck is loose.

"If you can do it during the play, you can make the goalie blind for a second," he said.

Niemi, who helped Chicago win the Stanley Cup last year as a rookie, has seen and stopped a lot of pucks after opening the postseason with a shaky series.

He gave up only one goal in each of the first two games after giving up 19 in six starts against Los Angeles in the first round. Detroit had 59 shots in Games 1 and 2 -- both of which it lost 2-1 -- but wants to put more pucks and bodies in and around Niemi.

"He's a great goalie, but I don't think he's been tested enough," Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall said.

Two weeks ago, the Tampa Bay Lightning were facing a daunting deficit and a potentially quick exit from their first playoff appearance in four years.

Six consecutive victories later, they're on the brink of the Eastern Conference finals.

The Lightning look to complete a stunning sweep of the top-seeded Washington Capitals as the Southeast Division rivals meet in Tampa on Wednesday night.

Pittsburgh jumped out to a 3-1 lead on Tampa Bay in the first round, but the Lightning outscored the Penguins 13-4 while winning the next three -- including a 1-0 Game 7 victory anchored by Dwayne Roloson's 36 saves.

The Lightning can eliminate Washington with far less drama, although none of the first three games have been lopsided. Tampa Bay needed an empty-netter to seal a 4-2 win in Game 1, and Vincent Lecavalier's overtime goal gave them a second road victory.

First-year coach Guy Boucher's team trailed entering the third period of Tuesday's Game 3 at home, but goals from Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone 24 seconds apart delivered a 4-3 win and left Washington veteran Mike Knuble impressed.

"They're uncanny when they want to get a goal. It's like they just snap their fingers or hit a button. They just dial it up," Knuble said. "You can see it's like they're flipping a switch. ... It leaves you flabbergasted. You don't know what to say about it."

Lecavalier and Sean Bergenheim also scored for Tampa Bay, with each getting his fifth goal of the playoffs to match Martin St. Louis for the team high.

The Lightning's winning streak, which equals their longest from the regular season, has the Capitals seemingly headed toward another postseason flameout.

Washington has won the Southeast each of the last four seasons, claiming the East's top seed in the last two, but it has won only two playoff series since reaching the 1998 Stanley Cup finals.

Detroit hoisted the Cup that year with four straight victories. That's the last time the Caps were swept in the playoffs.

"It's not over," Washington star Alex Ovechkin said. "They win three. We can win three."

The Capitals can draw inspiration from a couple of recent examples. Chicago trailed Vancouver 3-0 in the first round this year but forced Game 7 before falling in overtime.

Philadelphia erased a three-game deficit and beat Boston in the East semifinals last season, becoming the third team in NHL history to turn the trick.

Boucher is hoping his club can guard against a similar meltdown.

"Our players have really learned over this year to want more all the time," Boucher said. "There was a one-minute celebration (Tuesday) and that was it, because there's nothing done.

"Last year, Boston was up 3-0 and they lost. And they were a very good team. It's going to be very difficult to get that fourth one."

It will be harder if the Capitals can fire up a stagnant power play. Ovechkin scored on a 5-on-3 advantage Tuesday, but that is Washington's only goal in 16 power plays in the series.

Improved goaltending would also help. Michal Neuvirth has allowed at least three goals in five of the last six games, giving up 10 on 76 shots for a .868 save percentage against Tampa Bay.

Washington may have to face elimination with a weakened back line. Defenseman Mike Green didn't play most of the third period of Game 3 due to a lower-body injury.

Tampa Bay continues to play without injured regulars Simon Gagne and Pavel Kubina, but could have extra motivation. Assistant coach Wayne Fleming was alert and talking Tuesday after having surgery to remove a brain tumor.

"Any positive note on Wayne is big for us," Boucher said.

BOSTON (AP) -- Michael Ryder scored to beat the Canadiens in the first two minutes of overtime of Game 4. Nathan Horton needed two OTs to end it three nights later, then he added another sudden-death goal in Game 7 to help the Bruins eliminate Montreal from the playoffs.

When David Krejci beat Philadelphia's Brian Boucher 14 minutes into the extra period in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, Boston improved to 4-0 in overtime so far this postseason.

The Bruins say the key is remaining aggressive.

But having Vezina Trophy finalist Tim Thomas behind them in net doesn't hurt, either.

"In overtime, there's no doubt, you've got to tell your players to play to win," coach Claude Julien said Tuesday, a day after Krejci's goal gave Boston a 3-2 victory over Philadelphia and a 2-0 lead in the series. "Don't sit back. But the main thing is about trying to make sure you minimize those mistakes that can be costly, because it doesn't take much."

On Monday night, Philadelphia made the mistake, failing to clear the puck out of its own zone and allowing Horton to get to it on the boards. He passed it over to Krejci, who one-timed it past Boucher off the back of the net; the referee initially waved it off and it wasn't until a whistle for icing about a minute later that a review showed the goal was good.

For the Bruins, it was well worth the wait.

"It's a bit of a crapshoot when you go into overtime. At that point in the game, both teams are in the same boat," defenseman Andrew Ference said. "I'd be lying if I didn't say it's a bit of luck."

But it's more than luck that have the Bruins sitting on a two-game lead over the Flyers, with a chance to close out the series at home in Games 3 and 4 on Wednesday and Friday. Of course, it was only a year ago that Philadelphia lost the first three games of the conference semifinals before coming back to beat the Bruins in Game 7.

Flyers center Claude Giroux said the team would like to avoid being in that position again.

"Coming back from 0-3 -- I think it's pretty hard, even if we did it last year," he said. "We don't want to put ourselves in that situation. With the game we played last night, I think that we have to keep that same mindset and stay aggressive."

The Flyers pelted Thomas with 54 shots in all, outshooting Boston 32-12 in the third period and overtime. But the 2009 Vezina winner stopped 46 consecutive shots and a career-high 52 in all.

"He kept us in it," defenseman Tomas Kaberle said. "If it hadn't been for him, I don't know what would be the end."

Neither team had a full practice on Tuesday. The Bruins gathered at the TD Garden for a team meeting and off-ice workouts, and the Flyers made did the same in Philadelphia.

Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger, who missed Game 2 with an undisclosed injury, was not on the ice, but leading regular-season scorer Jeff Carter skated briefly on his own. Boucher, who left Monday night's game for 10 minutes in the second period but returned in the third, said his hand was not swollen where it was hit by a puck.

General manager Paul Holmgren said all of the players were day-to-day.

Julien said defenseman Adam McQuaid, who crashed head first into the boards in Game 2, had a sprained neck and was a day-to-day decision. Steven Kampfer, a potential fill-in, has been out three weeks with an injured knee; he resumed skating for the first time on Tuesday, but Julien said he would be out "a while."

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- After the Anaheim Ducks went on a frantic six-week sprint just to make the postseason, Teemu Selanne thinks it's understandable they couldn't maintain that breakneck pace going into their playoff opener.

The Finnish Flash just wants to make sure the Ducks don't take another night off in Game 2 against the Nashville Predators on Friday night.

The Ducks acknowledge they were outworked in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to Nashville, and 6-foot-5 goalie Pekka Rinne was exactly the nightmare Anaheim anticipated. But after a dynamic 15-5 finish to the regular season, Selanne and his high-scoring Ducks aren't out of tricks.

"The way I saw last night's game, we have been grinding so hard for such a long time, and we had a letdown," said Selanne, who scored the Ducks' only goal during a 5-on-3 advantage in the third period. "We took a night off. Those guys were better, but now it's back to business for us."

The Ducks will have to do almost everything better to compete with the Predators, whose conservative approach negated most of Anaheim's strengths, just as it did while winning three of four in this matchup during the regular season.

Anaheim loves an uptempo game, with its star forwards jumping on odd-man rushes or cycling the puck to create scoring chances. Nashville didn't allow much of either, and Rinne ate up the Ducks' few good scoring chances with an alarming ease.

Selanne doesn't know his fellow Finn very well personally, but he responded to the mention of Rinne's name Thursday with a good-natured epithet.

"He's one of those guys, when you think it's an empty net, it's not," Selanne said. "He's the reason Nashville is where they are. He's so quick down low. When he goes down, his bowed legs touch either post, and his glove hand is one of the quickest."

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle is being typically secretive about who will start in his own net Friday night. Ray Emery, who missed Anaheim's last two regular-season games with a lower-body injury, pronounced himself healthy Thursday after mopping up for Dan Ellis in the final 19 minutes of Game 1.

Emery's aggressive style and sharp play since signing with Anaheim could be a boost for the Ducks, who relied heavily on the former Ottawa goalie down the stretch. Emery could only watch in Game 1 as Mike Fisher, his longtime Senators teammate, scored two of the Predators' four goals.

"Getting into the playoffs is special," said Emery, who was in net when Ottawa lost the 2007 Stanley Cup finals to Anaheim. "Playoffs are a whole different thing. That's what I really, really love about the game. It's been a long time. It's been since I played against these guys in the finals."

Nashville coach Barry Trotz couldn't find much to criticize about his team's opening effort, praising Fisher's playoff poise and downplaying the importance of a single game. After five first-round losses in the past six years, the Predators aren't getting excited just yet.

In fact, Nashville led Chicago in their first-round series last year after winning Game 1 on the road, only to drop the series in six games.

"We've been in this position before, so I don't think anybody is thinking it means something it doesn't," said captain Shea Weber, who scored Nashville's opening goal on a power play. "We want to keep pushing forward, not sit back on our heels. They're an offensive team, and you try not to give them any life. You don't just sit on it."

Nashville lived up to its reputation for discipline, committing just two penalties in the first two periods -- both by Shane O'Brien -- before both teams got a bit rambunctious with the game out of reach. The Predators' ability to stay out of the penalty box is a key against Anaheim's collection of high-scoring forwards.

Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin and Predators forward Sergei Kostitsyn both didn't dress for practices Thursday at Honda Center, but both are expected to play Friday.

"It's simple. We have to get back to our game," said Beauchemin, who lost a race to a loose puck before Steve Sullivan scored to put Nashville up 2-0. "We want to play our physical game, and it wasn't there. Pucks weren't bouncing our way, but we can't change what we do defensively. We have to get back to it."

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- The Chicago Blackhawks are in a familiar spot, trailing after the first game of a playoff series against the Vancouver Canucks.

To erase that deficit in Game 2 on Friday night, and come back to eliminate the Canucks for a third straight season, the Blackhawks agree they have to get to another place they know well: right in front of Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo.

Luongo made 32 saves in a 2-0 victory in Game 1 on Wednesday night. And while Chicago took some solace in putting three pucks off posts behind him, they say they didn't get enough bodies in front of him.

"That's what playoff hockey is: Scoring ugly goals, scoring goals when you are in the crease, said defenseman Brent Seabrook, one of four players made available after Chicago canceled a Thursday afternoon practice. "We've got to do a better job getting in Luongo's face."

It's been an annual pledge from the Blackhawks, but this year may be different.

This a different Blackhawks team than the one that got in Luongo's face the last two playoffs. Both times that charge into the Canucks' crease was led by 265-pound Dustin Byfuglien, one of 11 players shed from last year's Stanley Cup-winning team.

Losing Tomas Kopecky to an undisclosed upper body injury in Game 1 won't help. Kopecky was among the top candidates to pester Luongo, especially on a fourth-ranked power play that was 0 for 3 on Wednesday. But he is doubtful for Game 2.

"As a committee we all have some responsibility of taking it to the net or getting to the net," coach Joel Quenneville said. "We need at least somebody in front of him, whether it's a point shot or plays around the net. We made it too easy for him last night."

Luongo expects to see more Chicago jerseys up close as the series goes on.

"Same as last couple years against them: Guys coming to the net hard, creating traffic, screening," he said. "I'm sure there will be a more conscientious effort from their side to bring more bodies to the net, but for me nothing changes, just try to fight through and find the puck."

Luongo also has made some changes since last season, and may be harder to disrupt as a result. He is deeper in his crease under new goalies coach Roland Melanson, a subtle but significant tweak designed to shorten his movements in his crease, and the distance to recover to the rebounds Chicago converted so often while winning all three games in Vancouver last playoffs.

The byproduct is he doesn't engage with opposing forwards outside of the crease nearly as often as he did last season, and most contact now occurs inside the blue ice.

"We try to get our box outs and have him see the puck but he has changed his style a little bit, playing a little bit deeper in the net so he's not too worried about guys being on top of the crease," Christian Ehrhoff said. "And if they are in the crease it's up to the ref to make a call."

Luongo also has more help. After losing too many battles in front of its net while again being eliminated by Chicago, Vancouver added top free-agent defenseman Dan Hamhuis, and traded for Keith Ballard during the summer.

The revamped defense is more physical, and that's the other area Chicago thinks it needs to improve to turn around the series. The Blackhawks were on the receiving end of 47 hits in Game 1, while dishing out just 21 of their own.

"We have to be same like them, hit hard back at them," said Chicago forward Michael Frolik, a skill player who led his team with six hits in his playoff debut.

The Blackhawks rallied in their last two playoff series against Vancouver and they're hoping for another comeback beginning on Friday night.

"When we get challenged I think we are better with some anger in our game," Quenneville said.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Goals. Assists. Saves. Those are the biggies. When fans dissect a hockey game, those are the numbers they look at first.

Blocked shots? Not exactly the sexiest statistic. At least that was the point made to Karl Alzner on Thursday morning in the Washington Capitals locker room.

Alzner's eyes immediately lit up.

"To me, it is," he replied. "It might sound weird, but I pride myself on doing that -- and not being afraid to just dive in front of one."

For the Capitals' sake, it's good that Alzner has that attitude. The young defenseman got in the way eight times when the New York Rangers were trying to propel the puck toward the net in the Capitals' 2-1 overtime win in Game 1 of their first-round Eastern Conference series Wednesday night, part of a landmark performance that shows just how much Washington's style has changed in just a few months.

The Capitals blocked 32 shots, the most they've had in 29 playoff games under coach Bruce Boudreau. Take away the overtime, and they still had 25. Compare that to the last six games of last year's postseason, when they had 11, 16, 14, 15, 11 and 12 against the Montreal Canadiens.

"They did a great job of blocking shots," New York defenseman Bryan McCabe said. "We've got to find a way to get it through, get to the net and get some ugly goals."

Essentially, the Capitals beat the Rangers at their own game. Blocked shots are a New York specialty -- and the visitors did have a respectable 28 in Game 1 -- but it's a different look from a Washington team that used to try to win by outscoring the opposition.

"Shot blocking has become a part of hockey, and if you don't do it you're not going to be successful," Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said. "You look at all the best defensive teams in the league, and their defense and forwards are committed to blocking shots, and I don't think we're any different. I think it gets ramped up in the playoffs more, where every team sacrifices even more."

It's a sacrifice Alzner is happy to make, even if it leaves him with a bruise or two.

"Guys are willing to take a puck off anywhere to make sure that they block it," said the 22-year-old defenseman, who was playing in his second NHL playoff game. "That's what you have to do. It's necessary. Yesterday was a game where I found pucks were just hitting me. There was maybe one time where I had to get in position to block it, and there were times guys were just shooting into my shin pads, and that's what I like to see. It's nice that they were all written down on the score sheet after so I could see them."

With Alzner and Jeff Schultz (six blocks) stopping pucks early and often, goaltender Michal Neuvirth had to make only 24 saves in his NHL playoff debut -- even though the game kept going and going until Alexander Semin's goal 18:24 into overtime.

"We need to get more scoring chances," Rangers coach John Tortorella said. "We've got to think 'shot' more. Our blue line, especially, has to think 'shot.' And the quicker you get it off, maybe they're going to be out of line."

The margin was between victory and defeat was thin, but it's psychological impact was huge for a Capitals team that was eliminated in the first round a year ago. Now, just as then, they are a No. 1 seed playing a No. 8 seed, so they are taking nothing for granted.

"You want to get a leg up in the series," forward Jason Chimera said. "But it doesn't mean anything now if you go and (throw) it away tomorrow. You've got to keep the foot on the gas pedal and keep going."

The Rangers couldn't be faulted for saying they came close, which would give them reason to expect better things ahead, but that wasn't the prevalent thought pattern after practice on Thursday.

"We'd better compete -- it's the playoffs," center Brian Boyle said. "We expect that out of ourselves. We expect more, actually. There's no moral victories. We lost Game 1. It was an opportunity for us to get an advantage in the series, and we didn't get it. We've got to go on to Game 2, and we've got to raise our level. You can say whatever you want about it being a close game and overtime, it obviously wasn't good enough, so we need to do something more."

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Tampa Bay Lightning forward Martin St. Louis won't have any trouble adjusting his playoff game face.

Three broken teeth and a fat lip took care of that.

Following a late-night trip to the dentist during which he endured two root canals, St. Louis was at practice Thursday vowing to even the score a day after a series-opening 3-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Rather than seeking payback against Penguins defenseman Zbynek Michalek, who's errant stick cracked St. Louis across the face, the diminutive forward was more focused on providing the Lightning's high-powered offense a spark in Game 2 of the first-round series at Pittsburgh on Friday.

"I've moved on," said St. Louis, who was initially livid -- to the point of yelling at the officials at the bench -- that no penalty was called against Michalek after the two collided in the corner midway through the second period. "It's an emotional game, you know. At a certain point in time, you get to a boiling point I guess."

He'd rather take out his frustrations by helping solve Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, who was at his acrobatic self in making 32 saves to stymie a Tampa Bay offense that finished the regular season second in the East with 247 goals.

"I'm not going to let my emotions get the better of me and hurt my team," St. Louis said. "We've talked among ourselves. We know what we have to rectify. And I know we'll come out and play a strong game."

The Lightning had their chances, but lacked finish during a game in which Fleury foiled Ryan Malone despite having his back to the play, and then made a diving arm save to stop Vincent Lecavalier in close.

Lightning coach Guy Boucher was more concerned about guarding his team from frustration.

"There were enough scoring chances," Boucher said. "We know we're encountering an amazing goaltender, who can win a game by himself. But we also know there's a lot of instances where our guys weren't in the right place to make something happen."

With Fleury holding down the fort, the Penguins finally broke through as Alex Kovalev and Arron Asham scored 18 seconds apart during a three-goal third period in their first playoff game in their new home. As welcome as the victory was, the Penguins are aware they can't rely on Fleury alone.

"I don't think we shut them down," defenseman Ben Lovejoy said. "They had some good chances and Marc was awesome back there."

Penguins coach Dan Bylsma was concerned with how his defenders had difficulty containing the speedy and creative Lightning forwards, who controlled much of the play in the first period.

"We're aware that they're a dangerous team," Bylsma said. "We still feel like we have to improve and get better at our game and prove we're a good team in this type of (playoff) setting."

The Penguins opened the playoffs the way they ended the regular season, adopting a defensive-first, opportunistic approach. The transformation was necessary after the team played the final half of the season without Sidney Crosby (concussion), and then lost Evgeni Malkin to a season-ending knee injury in February.

Pittsburgh's defense made up the difference, allowing 199 goals to finish fourth in the East.

After watching Game 1 from the coaching box, Crosby continued practicing with the team Thursday, but he's not been cleared for contact and there's no timetable on a return.

The Penguins have also adopted a physical style, which was apparent 90 seconds into Game 1 when defenseman Brooks Orpik rocked Lightning forward Steven Stamkos with a heavy hit in the corner.

"That was one of the biggest hits I've ever seen, especially against a player of that guy's caliber," Lovejoy said. "That really set the tone for our team."

Stamkos, after his playoff debut, shrugged off questions about the hit, and chalked it up as a learning experience.

"Although you want to perform right away," he said, "I think I can take a lot of things I can learn from that game that I can apply for the rest of the series."

Stamkos isn't alone. Eight other teammates made their playoff debuts. But St. Louis, who won the Stanley Cup with the Lightning in 2004, isn't worried about the team's lack of experience.

"Well, the first one's under their belt," he said "So, they know what to expect."

DETROIT (AP)—The Detroit Red Wings made a commitment to Jimmy Howard(notes) back in February, signing him to a contract extension.

Howard thinks having that out of the way is going to help him.

“It’s not one of those things in the back of your mind,” he said. “It frees you to just go out and play.”

The Red Wings and Coyotes open their first-round playoff series Wednesday night in Detroit, a rematch of a showdown that went seven games a year ago—an early test for Howard, then a rookie.

“I feel calmer,” Howard said. “Last year, I didn’t really know what to expect. The intensity definitely picks up and a lot more guys crash the net.”

Detroit’s leading scorer, Henrik Zetterberg(notes), will miss the series opener with an injured left knee. Could he miss the entire series?

“Tough to say,” Zetterberg acknowledged Tuesday after not skating with his teammates.

When the rest of the Red Wings crowd the crease, they’ll have a 6-foot-3, 208-pound goaltender to deal with in the Coyotes’ Ilya Bryzgalov(notes).

Phoenix forward Shane Doan(notes) says Bryzgalov is not just big.

“Bryz is probably the best player in the series,” Doan said. “I think he’s unbelievable and the most talented goalie in the league, as good as anybody. We’re going to count on him huge, just as they are with Howard. They’ve got some pretty talented forwards, so we might have to count on Bryz a little more.”

Bryzgalov has allowed just under 2 1/2 goals a game with a save percentage above 92. He said playing pressure-packed games late in the season prepared the Coyotes for this month.

“We were in the playoff mode pretty much the last two months, every game for us was very important,” Bryzgalov said. “I think it’s going to help us because we don’t have to change our mindset. Every game for us was do or die and it’s going to be the same in the playoffs.”

The Russian is certainly not daunted about facing Detroit, which is aiming for its fifth Stanley Cup since 1997.

“I’m not looking at their roster and going, ‘Oh my God, it’s the Red Wings. How are we supposed to play them?”’ Bryzgalov said. “You just take your chances and play, try to limit their chances, maybe make some big saves, some blocked shots. We were right there against them last year and we were good. We had some chances to win the series and unfortunately we didn’t.”

And part of that was the play of Howard, who got a $4.5 million, two-year deal two months ago that keeps him off the free agent market.

Detroit drafted Howard in the second round of the 2003 draft after he starred for three seasons at Maine, and gave him time to develop with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. The native of Ogdensburg, N.Y., was runner-up for rookie of the year last season after ranking in the top five in wins, goals-against average and save percentage.

Howard won 37 games this season with a 2.79 GAA and .908 save percentage, nothing stellar.

“I had a hiccup Christmas time and it wasn’t pretty,” Howard explained. “Pucks just weren’t hitting me.”

Pucks seem to bounce off Howard more than most goalies, giving teams second and third chances to score, but his teammates are certain he’ll help them rebound from a relatively disappointing run that ended in the second round of the playoffs last year.

“We have a lot of confidence in Howie,” defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom(notes) said. “He’s been playing well for us.”

Throwing sea creatures on the ice is a storied tradition in the NHL. We've had octopi in Detroit for decades. We've had a shark eating an octopus in San Jose. Nashville Predators fans have thrown catfish on the ice now and again for the last few seasons.

During Thursday night's Vancouver Canucks home game against the Minnesota Wild, the tradition continued, as someone felt it necessary to throw a large salmon onto the rink:

That's referee Frederick L'Ecuyer getting all creeped out by the dead fish, prompting this instant-classic line from the Wild booth:

"Oh, just pick it up. It's just a salmon, for cripe's sake. You act like it's poison. It's just a salmon!"

A 7-0-1 surge has left the San Jose Sharks needing one win to clinch the Pacific Division for the fourth consecutive season.

The only loss in that span came against the Los Angeles Kings, who find themselves on the verge of back-to-back postseason appearances thanks to a impressive stretch of their own.

The Sharks, winners of five in a row at home, can avenge that defeat and secure the Pacific title when they host the Kings on Monday night.

San Jose (46-23-9) suffered its lone defeat in the past eight games March 24, falling 4-3 in a shootout at Los Angeles. The Sharks won their third in a row since that loss Saturday, overcoming a 2-0 deficit after one period to beat Anaheim 4-2.

"We were talking about how we worked so hard as of late to get back on top of our division," forward Devin Setoguchi said after recording a goal and two assists. "Just to let it slip like that and have a bad period wasn't something we wanted to do. We worked so hard and it's so easy to fall right back into a hole."

Left wing Patrick Marleau had two goals and an assist to give him 10 goals and seven assists in his last nine games.

The Sharks, who have outscored opponents 14-3 during their three-game run, will end the Pacific race with any kind of victory Monday. San Jose is also focused on the battle with Detroit for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference -- and making sure it doesn't lose home-ice advantage in the first round.

"We're in a race for second," Setoguchi told the Sharks' official website. "We can't catch Vancouver. We're not going to just sit back. L.A. and Phoenix are a few points back. We have a goal to get second and try to get home ice."

The Kings (45-27-6) are in a fourth-place tie with the Coyotes, with both teams five points behind the Sharks. Los Angeles, though has a game in hand over Phoenix.

The Kings are also surging as the season winds down, defeating Dallas 3-1 on Saturday for their fifth win in six games. Los Angeles has gone 9-2-1 in its last 12.

"We just found a way to do it again," forward Jarret Stoll said. "We found a way to get the points, and that's all that matters."

Captain Dustin Brown, who scored twice against the Sharks last month, had a goal Saturday and has five goals and two assists in his last five games. Defenseman Matt Greene and right wing Wayne Simmonds also scored against the Stars.

Los Angeles has been rolling despite the absences of Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams, neither of whom are expected to return before the playoffs.

"We've been seeing that guys are stepping up, and we've been playing well without them," Simmonds said of Kopitar and Williams, who are tops on the team with 73 and 57 points, respectively. "It would be nice to have them back, but we can't worry about that right now."

Jonathan Quick made 24 saves Saturday and has gone 4-1-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average in his last five starts. Quick had posted a 1.81 GAA in winning five of six on the road prior to allowing three goals in a 3-1 loss at Vancouver on Thursday.

Quick is 2-0-1 with a 0.97 GAA in his career at HP Pavilion, where he stopped 24 shots in a 4-0 win Dec. 27.

San Jose counterpart Antti Niemi is also thriving, earning his 20th win in 27 starts by making 20 saves against the Ducks. Niemi is 4-1-2 with a 1.81 GAA versus the Kings.

The Sharks, 2-1-2 against the Kings, haven't lost the season series since 2001-02.

Captain Joe Thornton, three points away from reaching 1,000 for his career, saw his season high-tying five-game point streak end Saturday. He has managed one assist in his last six matchups with Los Angeles.

A year ago, the New York Rangers failed to reach the playoffs on the final day of the regular season. They can avoid a similar fate this week.

Playing their final three games of the regular season at Madison Square Garden should provide an advantage.

The Rangers look to move closer to a playoff berth Monday night when they host the Boston Bruins in a potential opening-round preview.

New York (42-32-5) is seeking to return to the playoffs after failing to qualify on the last day of the 2009-10 season, falling in a shootout at Philadelphia.

With a win Monday, the Rangers could clinch a playoff spot against Atlanta on Thursday. Otherwise, the playoff chase could come down to Saturday's regular-season finale versus New Jersey. The Devils and Thrashers are both out of contention.

New York is eighth in the Eastern Conference, two points ahead of ninth-place Carolina, but just one behind Buffalo for seventh and two back of sixth-place Montreal.

"We win, we're in," center Brian Boyle said.

The Rangers could end up facing Boston (44-23-11) in the first round of the playoffs. The Bruins have already clinched the Northeast Division title and are four points behind Philadelphia and Washington for the top two seeds, with a game in hand on both of those teams

"Our main focus is to get as many points as possible, play well late, and focus on playing our game," New York left wing Wojtek Wolski said.

Wolski gave the Rangers' playoff hopes a major boost Sunday, scoring on the decisive shootout attempt in a 3-2 road victory over the Flyers. Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves through overtime before stopping both of Philadelphia's shooters in the tiebreaker.

"A small flashback," Lundqvist said, referring to the season-ending shootout loss at Philadelphia last April. "I really learned from last year to stay in the moment, not think about the consequences. Last year, I thought if I didn't make the save, we were out. Now, it's just make the save and deal with the consequences later."

Lundqvist, who will likely make his 24th start in a row, is 9-3-1 with a 1.86 goals-against average and three shutouts over his last 13 as he continues to build a case for his first Vezina Trophy. He's 4-0-1 with a 1.38 GAA at Madison Square Garden during his hot streak.

Lundqvist, who has a league-leading 11 shutouts, is 15-5-2 with a 1.43 GAA in 22 games versus the Bruins. His five shutouts versus Boston tie his output against Florida and New Jersey for his most against any opponent.

He blanked the Bruins again March 26, making 26 stops in a 1-0 road win.

Partially thanks to Lundqvist, the Rangers have won 11 of their last 14 home meetings with Boston. However, they dropped the most recent matchup at MSG, 3-2 on Nov. 17.

The Bruins improved to 5-1-1 in their last seven games overall after beating Atlanta 3-2 on Saturday. Michael Ryder scored on a penalty shot midway through the third period to clinch Boston's second division title in three seasons.

"It's what a lot of teams battle for," coach Claude Julien said. "I'm just glad that's out of the way. We've got to keep winning games and see where we end up."

Milan Lucic, Boston's leader with 30 goals, has found the net just once in his last 12 games, but has nine assists in that span. The left wing has one goal and three assists in 13 meetings with the Rangers, with the goal coming in the Bruins' last visit to MSG.

The Los Angeles Kings would like to create a bit more separation in the logjam that is the Western Conference playoff race, while the Calgary Flames are desperate to gain ground.

One of them will leave Staples Center feeling they're headed in the right direction Monday night.

The Kings (40-26-6) are tied with Chicago and Nashville for fifth in the West, but they're all just one point ahead of the eighth-place tie between Nashville and Anaheim while the Flames (37-27-10) lurk two points back in 10th.

Los Angeles hopes to begin creating some breathing room as it heads into the final 10 games of the regular season with eight against teams in contention.

The Kings, however, failed to capitalize on one of those matchups Saturday, falling 2-1 to the Ducks as Jonathan Quick gave up a goal to Corey Perry 1:32 into overtime. However, Dustin Brown salvaged a point by scoring midway through the third period as Los Angeles gained at least one in the standings for the 21st time in 25 games (16-4-5).

"It's a team we'd obviously like to beat in regulation to put some more space between us," defenseman Willie Mitchell said. "We deserved better, but we're going to focus on the positives."

Having Brown and Anze Kopitar find the net consistently would help. Brown has two goals over the last three games after getting just one in the previous 11. His 23 goals are second on the team to Kopitar's 25.

Kopitar, though, has come up empty on six shots over the last two games after collecting eight goals and nine assists in the prior 11.

Brown has two goals and one assist in three season meetings with the Flames, helping the Kings win two. The Los Angeles captain set up Kopitar for the eventual game-winner in a 2-1 home win Dec. 9 before the Kings needed a shootout to take the most recent matchup 4-3 at Calgary on Feb. 5.

Kopitar's goal in the last meeting at Staples Center is his lone tally in his last nine games against the Flames with six ending in Los Angeles defeats.

Calgary missed a chance to gain a share of the final playoff spot Sunday, as it suffered the same fate as the Kings did in their last game. The Flames overcame a three-goal, first-period deficit only to allow Perry to score in overtime during a 5-4 loss at Anaheim to open a four-game trip.

"We gotta move on quickly," coach Brent Sutter said. "You gotta dissect what took place (Sunday), handle it the right way and start getting ready for our next game there. We gotta start getting ready for the Kings."

Miikka Kiprusoff may be wise to heed Sutter's advice if he's back in net. He was pulled Sunday after allowing three goals on five shots in the opening 5:49, giving him a 4.25 goals-against average in his last four starts.

Kiprusoff has a 2.41 GAA while losing the last two meetings with the Kings after winning eight of the previous nine with a 1.34 GAA and one shutout.

Backup Henrik Karlsson could face Los Angeles for the first time after stopping 26 of 28 shots in place of Kiprusoff on Sunday. The rookie has lost his last three appearances, despite a 2.21 GAA.

The Detroit Red Wings were without two of their top goal-scorers last time they took the ice, and consequently their four-game winning streak was snapped.

With the schedule about to get much tougher, the Red Wings would like to get closer to full strength as soon as possible.

Detroit hopes to have both Johan Franzen and Pavel Datsyuk in the lineup Monday night when it hosts the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Central Division-leading Red Wings (43-21-8) are in good position to make the playoffs for the 20th straight season, but where they finish in the Western Conference is still very much in question. They own a two-point lead over third-place San Jose and could potentially fall out of first in the division with three games remaining against Chicago.

Detroit's bid for the No. 2 seed took a bit of a hit Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Nashville. The Red Wings were without Franzen (mid-body injury), the team leader with 27 goals, and Datsyuk (lower-body injury), who has 22 goals and is second on Detroit with 57 points. The two were instrumental to the Red Wings' winning streak with Datsyuk tallying two goals and three assists and Franzen recording four assists.

Neither injury is considered serious, however, and both players are listed as day-to-day.

Datsyuk missed Detroit's first game against the Penguins with a broken hand, while Franzen had a goal in the 4-1 loss in Pittsburgh on Jan. 18, the third meeting between these teams since facing each other in a second consecutive Stanley Cup finals in 2009.

The Red Wings would prefer to have their best players on the ice as they face several tough teams during a five-game homestand.

After playing the Penguins, Detroit hosts NHL-best Vancouver on Wednesday, playoff-hopeful Toronto on Saturday and Chicago next Monday. The Red Wings play seven of their final 10 games at Joe Louis Arena, where they've won two in a row following a three-game skid.

"We have to play better at home," captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. "We have five games at home in a row and we have to take advantage of that."

Pittsburgh (41-23-8) is also embarking on a difficult stretch, with trips to Detroit and East-leading Philadelphia on Thursday.

The Penguins missed a chance to move within four points of the Flyers with Sunday's 5-2 loss to the New York Rangers, just their second defeat in six games.

The game took a turn when Pittsburgh's Matt Cooke got a five-minute elbowing penalty and ejection 4:36 into the third period and defenseman Matt Niskanen was given four minutes for a high-sticking penalty three minutes later. After Chris Kunitz scored a short-handed goal to put the Penguins ahead 2-1, the Rangers tied the game with eight seconds remaining in the 5-on-3 advantage and took the lead 11 seconds later.

Cooke has been suspended three times over the past three seasons for illegal hits, and will likely receive another ban for his latest infraction.

"It's what looks to be a contact right to the head on the play, so the league will look at that and treat it as such," coach Dan Bylsma said.

Despite Cooke's scary hit and the Penguins surrendering four unanswered third-period goals, Kunitz and Jordan Staal both continued their strong play.

Kunitz has three goals and three assists in his last three games, and Staal has scored in each of his last three. Each player had a goal against Detroit in January.

The Anaheim Ducks seem to be getting hot at just the right time thanks in large part to the efforts of Dan Ellis.

The Ducks will try for a fifth consecutive win and 14th in 16 games against the free-falling Colorado Avalanche, who are hoping to avoid matching their longest home losing streak in franchise history Friday night.

Following a five-game winless streak, Anaheim (36-26-5) has gone on to win four of five -- including a 5-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

Ellis, who was acquired from Tampa Bay prior to the trade deadline, made 30 saves against the Rangers to improve to 4-1-1 with a 2.26 goals-against average since joining the Ducks.

Ellis, 4-1-0 with one shutout and a 2.01 GAA lifetime against Colorado, has helped Anaheim remain in contention for one of the last five playoff spots in the Western Conference.

"Dan has given us a chance to win games, and that's all we ask our goalies to do," coach Randy Carlyle said. "He stepped in and made some critical saves at important times."

Ellis stopped 22 shots in a 3-2 win over Colorado on Feb. 27 as the Ducks continued their recent domination in the series.

While the Avalanche (26-32-8) haven't been able to beat Anaheim of late, they've also struggled at home, and could be without John-Michael Liles as they try to avoid matching a franchise-worst eight-game home losing skid from Oct. 21-Nov. 24, 1990.

Colorado, 0-6-1 in its last seven home games, lost its sixth straight overall and dropped to 1-14-2 in its last 17 games with a 5-2 defeat at Minnesota on Tuesday night.

"Very, very frustrating," said defenseman Ryan O'Byrne, who returned from a four-game absence due to a facial injury. "We're so close. We're just about there. It's been a rough stretch. We just need to go over that one more hill and hopefully get on a roll here."

Liles, who ranks in the top 10 among defensemen and leads the team with 36 assists, suffered a leg injury against the Wild and his status for this game is unknown. He is the only player to appear in all 66 games for Colorado.

Peter Budaj made 20 saves Tuesday. Since winning four of five against the Ducks, Budaj has gone 0-6-2 with a 3.11 GAA in eight starts in the series.

As Ellis continues to fill in nicely for Anaheim's No. 1 goaltender Jonas Hiller, who is dealing with a case of vertigo, the offense has also responded.

Left wing Bobby Ryan tallied his 31st goal and three assists against the Rangers while right wing Corey Perry and defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky each recorded two goals and an assist.

Perry leads the team with a career-high 33 goals and 71 points while Visnovsky, tied for the team lead with 40 assists, has five goals and two assists in his last three games.

"He's shooting the puck, and we've all become accustomed to his level of skill when he does shoot it," Carlyle said. "He shoots it extremely accurate and extremely hard.

"When you combine that with a pretty dependable partner in Toni Lydman, who doesn't really join the rush, he has more freedom playing a lot behind our top forward line."

Perry recorded his second hat trick of the season in a 3-0 win at Colorado on Feb. 5.

One of the Dallas Stars' longest streaks this season without a regulation loss couldn't have come at more opportune time. They might have a good chance to keep it going at the expense of another playoff contender.

The Stars try to continue their solid recent play by claiming their 14th consecutive home win over the Minnesota Wild on Friday night.

Following a 1-8-1 slump that consumed much of last month, Dallas hasn't walked away empty-handed from any of its last seven games (5-0-2). That may be why coach Marc Crawford was mostly positive despite his team's fifth loss in seven home games, 4-3 in a shootout with Calgary on Wednesday.

The Stars claimed their hard-earned point by rallying from a 3-0 deficit. Tomas Vincour's first NHL goal completed the comeback in the third period.

"It's a positive point, given that we came back from a three-goal deficit, it's not often that you do that," Crawford said. "I'm sure we would've liked to have two points, but it was a good, hard comeback by our guys, they dug deep as they've done all year, and at this point, it's about getting all the points you can get, and tonight we managed to find a way to get one."

Helping Crawford's outlook was the return of leading scorer Brad Richards, who had missed 10 games because of concussion-like symptoms. Dallas also might have defenseman Nicklas Grossman (hip) in the lineup for the first time in 12 games Friday.

If the Stars avoid losing in regulation again, they will match their longest such streak of the season, a 7-0-1 run Jan. 2-20. A victory would extend the NHL's third-longest active home win streak by one team over another.

The Stars (36-23-8) haven't lost to the Wild (35-26-7) in Dallas since falling 3-2 in overtime March 21, 2003. They've also won five straight meetings in the series overall -- two this season.

Stephane Robidas' overtime goal Dec. 4 gave Dallas a 4-3 home win over the Wild, and Andrew Raycroft stopped 26 shots in a 4-0 victory in Minnesota on Jan. 9.

The Wild also lost 4-0 on Thursday in Nashville as their 2-0-1 stretch came to an end.

Minnesota is tied for 10th in the West with Anaheim, two points behind eighth-place Los Angeles. Playing without Mikko Koivu (broken finger) and Cal Clutterbuck (upper-body injury) hasn't helped, and coach Todd Richards doesn't expect the two forwards to return soon.

"We have to figure out a way," he said.

While it dropped the opener of a four-game trip, Richards' club still has a chance to record a franchise-record 19th win away from home Friday.

The Wild might need a better performance from Niklas Backstrom to reach that milestone. He's 2-5-2 with a 3.01 goals-against average in his last nine games against the Stars, who he hasn't faced this season.

Dallas' Kari Lehtonen has won back-to-back games over Minnesota but has also allowed at least three goals in all four of his career matchups for a 3.65 GAA. Raycroft is 4-1-0 with a 2.01 GAA in five starts against the Wild.

Whether or not it's too late for Ilya Kovalchuk to lead the New Jersey Devils to the playoffs, he probably wouldn't mind making sure his former team's postseason push ends in disappointment.

Kovalchuk makes another return to Atlanta on Friday night for the first of two meetings in five days between the Thrashers and Devils, with both clubs running out of time to gain ground in the Eastern Conference.

The Devils' unlikely surge toward the playoffs hit an unexpected bump Tuesday, with conference-worst Ottawa handing New Jersey (30-32-4) just its third regulation defeat in 25 games.

After winning their last four games and taking 10 of their previous 12 by one goal, the Devils allowed the tiebreaking score with 2:13 to play in the 2-1 loss. Martin Brodeur's seven-start winning streak was snapped.

"That was a tough one, a tough one to take," forward Brian Rolston said. "They played well and we didn't play good enough. We let it slip. But we'll get back to it next game."

New Jersey is in 12th place in the East, three points behind Atlanta -- with both teams chasing the New York Rangers, Buffalo, Carolina and Toronto for the final two spots.

The Thrashers (28-28-11) seemed to have sunk from contention after going 2-9-2 in their first 13 games after the All-Star break, but they've won their last two as they cling to slim hopes.

"They'll be desperate for the points," Kovalchuk told the Devils' official website. "They still believe they can do it, too. That will be a huge game. For us, it will be do or die."

Atlanta blew an early 2-0 lead against the Hurricanes on Wednesday, but Tim Stapleton's second goal of the season clinched a 3-2 overtime win.

"We really wanted to get out without giving up an extra point," Atlanta coach Craig Ramsay said.

Ondrej Pavelec returned after missing four games with a wrist injury and had his best performance in weeks. Pavelec, who had gone 3-10-4 with a 3.54 goals-against average in his previous 18 appearances, stopped 35 shots.

Atlanta, hoping to win a third straight game for the first time since a six-game run Nov. 19-30, may have to do it without Dustin Byfuglien. The defenseman missed his first game of the season Wednesday due to a lower-body injury.

Kovalchuk should continue to get plenty of attention in his third visit to Atlanta since the Thrashers traded him to New Jersey on Feb. 4, 2010. He was booed in his last visit to Philips Arena on Dec. 18, when he scored in a 7-1 Devils loss.

Kovalchuk got some revenge 13 days later, netting a key insurance goal in a 3-1 home win over Atlanta.

The Thrashers' all-time leader in several offensive categories, Kovalchuk has been a huge reason for New Jersey's surge, but he was held to one shot Tuesday. It was just the second time in 17 games since the All-Star break that he went without a point.

"Kovy didn't have a good game, (Patrik Elias) didn't have a good game, but these guys have been carrying the team to a certain point," coach Jacques Lemaire said. "It's a bad game they had, they forget it, they go to the next one, that's it."

Martin St. Louis' creativity gave the Tampa Bay Lightning a much-needed win. They have a good chance to pick up a few more over the next 2 1/2 weeks.

A seemingly favorable stretch of games for the Lightning begins Friday night with a visit from the Eastern Conference's last-place team, the Ottawa Senators.

A season-worst, 0-3-1 slide to open this month, along with Washington's six-game win streak, cost Tampa Bay its spot atop the Southeast Division. The Lightning, though, stayed within two points of the Capitals with a 4-3 shootout win over Chicago on Wednesday.

After his team blew a two-goal lead in regulation, St. Louis sealed that victory with a nifty spin in front of Corey Crawford followed by a backhanded shot that went in off the crossbar.

"It's a huge win," St. Louis said. "We've been playing pretty good hockey. We just haven't gotten the results. ... This time of year, it's all about results."

Tampa Bay (38-21-8) has an opportunity for some more favorable results in its drive to regain the lead in the Southeast and earn its first playoff berth since 2006-07.

The Lightning will face only one team currently in playoff position over its next nine games, a trip to sixth-place Montreal on Thursday. They have three matchups in that stretch against the Senators (24-34-9), including another at the St. Pete Times Forum on March 29.

Tampa Bay will also travel to Ottawa on March 19 to wrap up a four-game trip.

"We got to keep pushing," coach Guy Boucher said. "If the door doesn't want to open, we're going to break it down. We're going to do what we need to do."

Boucher's team will have to do that without Pavel Kubina for the next three games. The NHL suspended the defenseman on Thursday for an elbow to the head of Chicago's Dave Bolland.

Given their recent history against Ottawa, the Lightning might not need his help. They're 3-0-1 in their last four against the Senators and will try to win three straight home matchups for the second time in the all-time series.

In the most recent meeting Jan. 8 at Scotiabank Place, Tampa Bay used third-period goals from St. Louis and Adam Hall for a 2-1 victory. Dwayne Roloson also stopped 31 shots to snap a personal five-game skid to Ottawa.

If he starts again, he'll face a team that's scored eight goals in five games this month. The Senators, though, have prevailed in three of those thanks to goaltender Craig Anderson.

Anderson, brought over in a trade with Colorado on Feb. 18, has allowed one goal or fewer in seven of his nine consecutive starts with the team, including Thursday's 2-1 victory at Florida.

After Erik Karlsson scored twice, Anderson just missed his second shutout with the Senators as he gave up a goal to Clay Wilson with 4:13 remaining.

"A shutout is a great accolade to have, but the more important thing is the team got the win and everyone's happy in the room," Anderson said.

If he gets another start, Anderson will try to build on his 3-1-2 record and 1.36 goals-against average in seven career matchups with the Lightning.

He'll also try to stop NHL goal-scoring leader Steven Stamkos, who has four goals and four assists during a five-game point streak against Ottawa. St. Louis has also recorded a point in five consecutive matchups.

The Detroit Red Wings' hopes of capturing the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference appear to be slipping away as the club suffers through a four-game losing streak. The slump could end up costing them much more than the top spot.

With their hold on the Central Division lead and one of the top three seeds in the West in jeopardy, Detroit looks to stop its slide by completing a season sweep of the visiting Edmonton Oilers on Friday night.

The Red Wings (39-20-8) have gone 0-2-2 in their last four, giving them their longest losing streak of the season. Detroit, among the NHL leaders with 220 goals, has managed one goal three times during its skid while going 2 for 14 on the power play in those games.

On Wednesday, Detroit grabbed the lead on Darren Helm's goal early in the first period, but couldn't add to it and lost 2-1 to Los Angeles.

"It was a tight game, we had every opportunity to win the game, we didn't find a way," coach Mike Babcock said. "We've just got to keep playing like that and starting like we did and getting pucks ahead and shooting pucks and going to the net."

The loss was the season-high third straight at home -- all in regulation -- for Babcock's team, which scored one goal in each of the last two. Detroit hasn't lost four in a row at Joe Louis Arena since Nov. 18-27, 2009, and hasn't dropped four straight in regulation on home ice since Feb. 7-29, 2008.

The Wings are in danger of falling out of contention for the top seed, but they may need to be more concerned with simply securing one of the top three spots. Red-hot San Jose is pushing Detroit for second place in the conference, and Chicago has gone 8-1-1 in its last 10 to move within five points of Detroit for first in the Central.

A matchup with the Oilers could provide the perfect opportunity for the Wings to end their longest losing streak since Feb. 3-11, 2010, and get back on track offensively. Detroit has outscored Edmonton 14-6 in three meetings this season, and the Oilers have given up nine goals in losing their last two overall.

Todd Bertuzzi scored twice in the most recent meeting, a 5-3 Wings road win Jan. 4, while Tomas Holmstrom and Danny Cleary each had two goals in a 6-2 victory Nov. 11 at Joe Louis Arena. Cleary has three goals and two assists in two games versus Edmonton this season.

Cleary, Bertuzzi and leading scorer Henrik Zetterberg, however, have gone without a point during the losing streak. Johan Franzen, tops on the team with 27 goals, has one in his last 16 games.

Detroit is looking for its fifth win in six home matchups with the Oilers.

Edmonton (23-37-8) lost 5-0 at Washington on Wednesday. The Oilers, who were outshot 36-22 and managed five shots in the third period, have scored one goal in their back-to-back losses after scoring 11 times during a three-game win streak.

"We're looking at guys and whether or not they are as deeply committed as they need to be to carry on," coach Tom Renney said.

Edmonton's Nikolai Khabibulin, who made 31 saves Wednesday, has played all three games against Detroit this season and has posted a 4.46 goals-against average in his last four matchups with the Wings. He's faced an average of more than 36 shots in that span.
