If technology is properly incorporated into the functions, curriculum, and style of a school district and its campuses, district personnel, students, and their parents will benefit from increased productivity and ease of learning. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Technology’s main goal is to utilize technology’s advantages to improve education “through developing national educational technology policy and implementing policy” that will help school districts meet the goals of No Child Left Behind (U.S. Department of Education, Ed.gov). As technology continues to become more and more prevalent in our society and the lives of our students, it must become an integral piece of any successful classroom. It is the responsibility of a school district and its campus administrators to insure this technology is being used appropriately. Once the importance of technology has been agreed upon it is imperative to decide what areas of education would best benefit from increased incorporation of new technologies.
One leading concern of many Administrators is the need for increased fundraising to offset the fact that many school districts “allocated funds have not matched inflation” (SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION: Human-resource software better serves students and employees, from eSchool news staff, http://www.eschoolnews.com/news/ ). The proper use of technology can help increase a schools received donations by helping to plan fundraisers better and increase communication between the campus and its local businesses and sponsors. Technology can also be utilized to help make better informed decisions that have been organized through the use of software such as Microsoft Excel. The use of technology can help Administrators to communicate with faculty, parents, and the students themselves. The use of software like Contact Tracker can help teachers and parents to keep students motivated and passing their classes.
Another aspect of campus administration that would benefit from the use of technology is the managing of school finances. By using the proper equipment it is much easier to keep a balanced school budget that accounts for all school funds. Without technology, detailing the overall financial wellbeing of a campus is virtually impossible (Technology for school operations and school administration, education-e.com). As national and state accountability ratings continue to become more and more important in the world of educational funding, being able to account for and manage the allocated and donated funds is imperative. Technology makes it easier to account for all school funding.
Another extremely important use of technology for Educational Administrators is the ability to positively motivate teachers to become better educators in a timely manner. The PDAS (Professional Development and Appraisal System) way of evaluating teachers is a good process for administrators to help teachers become better in areas of weakness. One of the flaws of the PDAS system is that it requires the administrator to fill out quite a bit of paperwork for each teacher’s appraisal. Through the use of technology like Eduphoria, administrators can log onto a computer and quickly type in the appropriate suggestions, scores and comments of the evaluation. This material is then available for teachers to read and learn from in a much quicker timeframe. The use of technology like eduphoria for teachers to read walkthrough evaluations, and observations is a fantastic way for teachers to get feedback as quickly as possible. Software like eduphoria can also be used for teachers to write lesson plans, and use online calendars to sync up with their teams while simultaneously keeping administrators aware of their plans and progress. Technology like eduphoria is an essential asset that all district and campus administrators should be utilizing.
As technology continues to change the world around us Educational Administrators must be leaders in the implementation and argument for technology’s use in education. Today’s public education students live in a world of technology that they are extremely comfortable with; increasing technology in their daily learning is imperative to shaping qualified young adults that are ready for higher education or the work place as soon as they step out of a high school doorway. It is also the responsibility of school administration to create a campus that functions properly and promotes learning. The utilization of technology to smooth the processes of education helps promote well run, successful schools.
