The menstrual cycle is a phenomenon that occurs naturally in the body of women. Awareness about this is pretty high in developed countries. But in India people lack adequate awareness about menstrual periods, one of the recent studies says.

Discrimination against menstruating women is common in India, where periods have been tagged as impure and unholy. Women in menstrual days are often excluded from social and religious events. Mainly not entering into a 'temple' or 'puja' room is the main restriction among urban girls whereas not entering into the kitchen itself is the main restriction among rural girls. Even now, in rural India, women are kept in a hut in the backyards of the house during their periods.

Rituals of Menstruation in India

There is a tradition called 'Tuloni Biya' in Assam where they used to perform some rituals right after the girl's menarche (first menstruation). The girl is confined to a room for the seven days of her period. On the fourth day and the seventh day, she should be given a ceremonial bath with the turmeric paste considering her body has been cleaned with the bath. On the seventh day, relatives have a feast from the girl's house and she receives gifts and blessings from the elders. It's not only in Assam, this ceremonial bath has been done in various regions of India both the northern and the southern parts.

Periods have a connection with the moon

It's a proven fact that the menstrual cycle does not sync with the lunar cycle. A full lunar cycle takes 29.5 days that go from one new moon to the next. The average menstrual cycle for women is 26-29 days. That's why we confuse the moon and the periods and there is no proven fact that a period is likely to occur on the full moon day.

Is period blood clean?

It's not necessary to be called 'Period blood'. It's just normal blood and it is as clean as blood from every other part of the body. 77% of Indian women do not enter temples during their menstrual period as there shouldn't be any worship of God due to impurity. The house does not allow them in the prayer rooms either.

50% of Indian women today still think that they should not touch others or touch foods during their menstrual period. The whole menstrual period or at least the first three days should be solitary.

Two days ago, when the trailer of the movie 'Dil Bechara', starring Sushant Singh Rajput was released, it struck my mind that it's an adaptation of 'The Fault in Our Stars' Novel. Many people have told me about this novel. It is also the most recommended one among my friend' circle that I couldn't stop myself from reading it.

We must have heard of a 15-year old little girl who brought her ailing father by bicycle from Gurgaon, Haryana to Darbhanga, Bihar during the lock-down days.

As there was no transportation available in the month of May, they have chosen to travel by bicycle to reach their home town. The loss of job made them go back to their own land. It was 1,200 kilometers which took about seven days to reach their home. Eighth-grade pass Jyothi Kumari gave father a hope to travel with a cycle. The father knows about his daughter's determination, he accepted.

Jyoti had remained hungry for two days in those ten days of travel, but she fed her father whatever she carried with. With good food and enough sleep, we can cycle up to 100 kilometers a day.

Jyoti has done such a record without having these things. How would have been those ten days for them? Especially for Jyothi? Still can't believe this! I came across another news yesterday which thrilled my mind even more than this news.

Indian Marriage

Marriage is decided in India with so many factors which include social status, religion, caste, horoscope, and dowry (nowadays known as gifts). Meeting partners online, then dating, love, and all its not possible mostly with some Indian families. But there are some marriages by 'their own choice' which is known as 'Love Marriage' and marriage by 'their parent's choice' is the practice mostly followed by people in India. I remember one of my friends asked me, 'what is Love marriage? As if an arranged marriage doesn't have love?' she questioned. It's doubtful whether the courtship period will turn into love or not? Home-made Birthday Cake

My grandmother is 74 years old. Her name is Tamil Arasi. The meaning of 'Queen' in Tamil language is 'Arasi'. Thus, we have written 'Tamil Queen' on the birthday cake. It's nothing but the mere English translation of her name. Lol!

She hasn't cut a birthday cake even once in her life. Birthdays are just as normal as other days. Not just because of Corona, but my grandmother simply doesn't like buying cakes from the bakery. So my sister and I planned to make a cake at our home. Here is the result.

Everything is homemade including the whipping cream to write the name.

Ingredients

1 cup Maida
1/2 cup Powdered Sugar
1/4 cup Refined oil or palm oil
1 teaspoon Baking powder
1/2 teaspoon Baking soda
1/3 cup Milk
Chocolate sauce (required amount)
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla essence

Instructions

Aluminum Cake Tray

Step-by-Step Making Process

1. Take a cake baking tray. If you don't have this tray, if you have any other aluminum tray as given in the image above, you can use it. Grease the tray with melted butter and dust it with flour or line a parchment paper (Also known as baking paper or butter sheet) after that, put it aside.

2. Add some amount of sand to a pressure cooker and spread it evenly. Sand prevents the cake from overcooking. Put a plate inside the cooker and cover the sand properly. (This should be set in a way that the cake doesn't spoil because of sand) Place a ring-type small stand over the plate. Remove the gasket and weight and just cover the cooker with the led. Switch on the stove now and let it heat for a few minutes on a low flame. It's known as a pre-heating process.

3. Put 1/2 cup of powdered sugar in a big bowl. Don't take normal sugar, powdered sugar is always better to use for the cake. Also take a big bowl, so that you can easily mix the batter.

4. In that powdered sugar, mix 1/4 cup of oil well by using a whisk. (You can also add some extra spoons of oil if you wish) Add 1 cup of maida, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/4 cup of oil and mix them well for a minute. Don't panic if lumps formed at this stage. Add 1/3 cup of milk and mix it well and make it as a paste. Whisk without any lumps. It will take 5-8 minutes to make it. If you still didn't get lumps-free batter, mix it for a few more minutes. Add vanilla essence and mix well. The batter is ready now.

5. Pour the batter onto the cake tray. Tap the tray to avoid air bubbles.

6. Now open the cooker and place the cake tray carefully inside the cooker. Without the gasket and whistles, cover the cooker and cook it for 45 minutes on low flame. After 45 minutes, take the cake out and let it cool for 10 minutes. By this time we can make the whipping cream.

Ingredients for whipping cream

4 tablespoon Milk
1 1/2 tablespoon Cornflour

1. Put 4 tablespoons of milk into a small pan and let it heat for 30 seconds. Add cornflour into this and mix it well. After a minute, it will become like a thick paste. Whipping cream is now ready.

2. Once this whipping cream cools down, put it inside the polythene packet and make it as cone shape by putting a rubber band on the top. At the corner of the cone put a small hole by cutting it down with a scissor. Keep this aside.

Now let's come to the cake again

7. After the cake cools down, apply the chocolate sauce everywhere on the cake. Take the whipping cream that we made and write your loved one's name and a happy birthday message as you want.

8. Put the cake in the freezer for an hour and it will be ready to serve. We have just decorrated this with gems to make it more colorful. Anyways, It's a choice.

The entire country has been suffering due to Corona Pandemic, financial constraints, unemployment, work from home stress, etc., There is no exaggeration saying, the whole country is grieving now isn't it?

Have we ever thought due to the permanent termination of one's life, what can be done with his/her social media account?

Access to Social Media After Death

It is not immediately obvious what to do with one's social media accounts after death. Friends and family may not even think about this at that particular time at all. 'Disabling the deceased person's account may be unnecessary' some people say. But getting birthday reminders, anniversary notification, etc., how this will make us think?

His/her posts, photos, videos, and everything in memory of them will make others unhappy bringing back to the old memories. But on the other hand, some want to keep their account to remember the person for a lifetime.

Generally, after some months, it's hard to keep the dead person's mobile phones as it keeps giving the notification from social media, phone calls, messages, etc., Thus, the problem is people want to keep the account at the same time notifications disturb them.

To solve this issue, In 2004, FaceBook introduced 'Memorialize an Account' if the user had died. This feature was created since it's most requested among Facebook users who gave feedback on the settings page.

When this feature was announced, Facebook said, "We thought we can support the family and those who are grieving of their loved one's death. When a person passes away, their account can become a memorial of their life."

Can we unlock the person's mobile phone after death with their fingerprint?

Generally, at the funeral home, people try to unlock the deceased person's mobile phone with the fingerprint sensor. Mostly if it's a suicidal case the first thing from the family is unlocking the mobile phone only. But unfortunately, It's not possible because once the tissue is dead, the electricity from the body will fail to activate the fingerprint sensor.

When someone calls the deceased person's mobile phone after death, how painful it is to tell them that, 'the person is no more'. Similarly, it is difficult to look at the accounts and messages kept on coming from the other people without knowing that the person had died.

Either Memorialize or Delete it

After a person's death, it's a choice that the account can be memorialized or deleted.

Facebook:

When you want to memorialize the deceased person's account, it stays up on the site with the word 'Remembering' in front of the person's name who has died. Depending on the settings, friends can share a memory on the memorialized account timeline. Facebook will hide the page from in-site search results and 'People You May Know columns. Facebook will not send you their birthday notifications, memories, etc., Existing friends can see that person's Facebook wall.

A Tribute column will be shown on the memorialized account, the legacy contact can decide who can see this area and who can post tributes. They can also update the profile and cover photo of the memorialized account.

Before death, if the user will nominate any of their friends or family members as a legacy contact, they can have the right to access their page after the person's death. They can post in their timeline but can't delete or alter any posts. They also can't un-friend anyone. They can't log in to his/her account since it has limited access to protect the user's privacy. The legacy contact can choose to delete the account or memorialize the account.

You yourself can set your account if it has to be deleted after your death

And also you can choose to delete your account after death. You can go into the settings and choose 'Memorialization' settings, in that tap 'Delete Account After Death' and save it. After your death, if an immediate family member lets Facebook know about it, the account will be deleted including the likes, comments, reactions, photos, videos, posts, and everything. If you've already chosen this option 'Delete Account After Death' then legacy contact has no right to memorialize the account. So you have to delete the legacy contact also.

It is best to 'memorialize' the Facebook account. Because, after the death of someone, those who belong to him/her can see that account as their memory.

Twitter

Twitter does not give access to anyone after death due to privacy reasons. Deactivation of the account is the only option available in twitter if contacted by the immediate family member. A copy of the deceased person's death certificate and ID proof is needed for the deactivation.

Instagram gives two options, like Facebook, deleting, and memorializing it. You can delete or memorialize the account by giving the birth and death certificate of the deceased person.

If you memorialize the account means you can't change anything from the account. Posts created by the person has died will remain as it is. You can't log in, delete any posts, put likes, comments, tag any persons can't be done after memorializing the account. It's like the account will freeze completely, we can just see the photos from the accounts. That's all.

I still remember my 9th standard's poem 'The Road Not Taken' by Robert Frost. In that, the author had chosen the road less traveled by, which has made all the differences. Life is full of choices, surprises, and miracles. At times, from the difficult phase, people survive to become better. This thriving is a never-ending process. It happened in November 2018. One day, one of my office colleagues was found hanging at his home. The previous day of that incident, he called every friend of us and spoke for a minute or more. At that time no one thought we were going to see him dead the next day. It was shocking. Friends were angry at him for his stupid decision. He was only 27 when he had his last breath.

It is difficult to see his mother even today. Making decisions in a moment makes others miserable, even for years.

This has come into mind when I heard about Sushant Singh's incident today.

It's not an article about Ramayana. While I was traveling to a village in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, I happened to see a historical place related to Ramayana (A Sanskrit epic of Ancient India which tells the story about Rama and his beloved wife Sita. Ravana abducted Sita by her beauty and how Rama rescued her is the story) I've written in this article what exactly happened to me in that village where Sita was in solitary confinement 2,000 years ago.

Now, Let's go to the place.

I was waiting at the Marthandam bus stand to go to Pechiparai. As always... Everything except the buses we needed came and went. There were three buses in front of me. All three were carrying the 'Thengapattanam' name board. It was written via 'Mun Sirai'.

Mun Sirai

'Mun Sirai' is a Tamil word. Mun (Front), Sirai (Jail) So the exact translation for the word in English is Front Jail. I wonder why this village is named as 'Mun Sirai'? Was there any jail in ancient times? I don't know anything. This name was bizarre. Some prison must have been there I thought. That's why it has such a name.

I couldn't stop my urge to know the reason behind this name. So, I got on the bus to 'Mun Sirai'. The rubber plantations were spotted on the road with a short distance away. The bus then filled with the smell of rubber from the green and cool road. Although the bus journey made discomfort with poor maintenance, the spectacular views of nature made the trip pleasant.

After a half-hour journey, the bus stopped in 'Mun Sirai'. A small town only! In the course of half an hour, we can round the city by walking. It's that small.

Sita's eyes..!

An elderly man was walking in front of me. I stopped him and asked for an explanation about 'Mun Sirai'. He asked me "Oh...Did you come here to see Sita's eyes?" That old man looked at me with a faint look. I don't understand anything!

My confusion was greater than ever before. What is the relationship between Sita and 'Mun Sirai'? I looked at the old man's face without knowing the answer.

"When the Demon Ravanan took away the little girl Sita, at that time the prison custody for her was not ready in Sri Lanka. Till it gets ready Ravanan kept Sita here only. That's why this place is called Mun Sirai". He explained clearly.

I got the explanation about 'Mun Sirai'. But what about the eyes?

"Ohhh... While Sita was in this prison, she sculpted her eyes on this rock as a sign of Rama who is searching for her. Even now it expresses her sad feelings. Not surprisingly, Being woman is difficult" He left this answer with sadness. After two thousand years, he depicted Sita's feelings with his words made me wonder.

It couldn't control my interest anymore. 'What do Sita's eyes look like? Can a woman in the prison sculpt her eyes on the rock without the knowledge of Ravanan?' So many questions were piercing my mind, I looked for the eyes of Sita.

I wouldn't have walked half a kilometer. A Siddha medical college came into my sight. 'Sita's eyes are in this college' people have already said. I asked the security reluctantly. 'Along with the hostel, the path will go down into a ditch. That's right there' he replied.

I walked... It was a rocky hill. It was a little difficult to look for the eyes of Sita on that rocky bed. The mid-day sun was intensifying its work. The hill was about 250 feet from the ground. It was an isolated area with no sign that humans exist farther away from that place. 'How Sita felt in solitary confinement in this isolated region?' I thought while in search of her eyes.

Pond Where Sita Took bath

There were two ditches near the rock where there was little water. It is not known whether it was rainwater or water from a nearby hill. This is the sign that Sita created for Rama. Did Rama understand that It was created by Sita as a sign for him to find her? Who knows?!

A short distance away from this place, there was a pond and a small room. This was built by Ravana for Sita for bathing and changing clothes, people said. It looks like a newly built area. So what they said was not convincing. From there I started walking.

Thenga Pattanam

Thenga Pattanam is situated at a distance of 54 kilometers from Kanyakumari. The seaside village is home to the beautiful nature of the Arabian coast. The name of the village comes from the fact that coconut trees compete and occupy this coastal area. Best quality coconuts are cheaper here. Thus, it's called 'Thenga Pattanam'. Thenga (coconut), Pattanam (town) in the Tamil language.

The fishing harbor over there which was artificially created is a source of access to 11 fishing villages around the Kanyakumari district. Every day, thousands of catamaran boats go to sea in search of fish. Some of these cross Gujarat and enter Pakistan's territory. But the Pakistan Navy has not even shot a single fisherman from India.

How different is Pakistan from the Sri Lankan navy? A fisherman said that 'Despite having a valid ID, the navy does not greatly observe fishing in the Pakistan territory'.

Even the hostile countries are compatible with Indian fishermen. But Sri Lanka, which is a friendly nation to India, continues to persecute Tamil Nadu fishermen every day.

This time will change one day. Let's wait!

Most of the fishermen of Tamil Nadu are in poverty and these village fishermen are only prosperous. Because this is the area with the most fish in the world. More expensive fish such as Shrimp, Squid, Ribbonfish, and King Mackerel are caught in their trap only.

From here the 'Anantha Victoria Marthandam Canal' begins to transport fish to the port of Cochin and public transport. Traveling along the west coast is a very pleasant experience as is the East Coast Road in Chennai. On one side we can see coconut trees, on the other side of the blue sea. We can spend a couple of days at this place by making a small tent with the campfire.

Thenga Pattanam is a peaceful beach. Its beauty and tidal waves will always fill the mind. Though It was an unexpected tour, it's filled my heart every time I think of Indian Epics.

Homai Vyarawalla

Well, Today we are going to talk about Homai Vyarawalla, the first female photographer of India. She was the one to photograph India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled the National flag of India for the first time at the Red Fort on August 16, 1947. (Red Fort is a historic fort in the capital of India, Delhi)

Moreover, the moments of Indira Gandhi with her father Nehru, Nehru and Lal Bahadur Shastri's (The Second Prime Minister of India) last moments, preparations for the Second World War, Jacqueline Kennedy's (The first lady of the United States during the presidency of John F Kennedy) visit to India in 1962, Dalai Lama's first visit to India in 1956, a congress meeting approving the partition of Pakistan, when Mountbatten's sworn in as governor-general, Nehru's speech after he was sworn in as the Prime Minister and many other visits to India by foreign leaders and so many important historical events of India she captured with the camera. In her early period of her career, her photos weren't allowed to be published with her name. Just because she is a woman, her photos were published with her husband's name.

In those days, when women were not even sent to school, Homai graduated from Mumbai's famous J.J. College of Arts and Science. She started her career in the 1930s for the Mumbai based magazine known as 'The Illustrated Weekly of India'. She later worked for the 'Times of India'. From the first moment of Independence India, Homai captured every leader of India and traveled with them. But she did not capture the final moments of Mahatma Gandhi. That was the only regret in her life.

On the morning of Gandhi's assassination, she left to record that moment but her husband stopped her. So she didn't capture that moment. To compensate for it, the pictures she took of Gandhi's ashes were taken away, pictures of thousands of people crowded to see Gandhi's ashes at every railway station. Those pictures became the greatest asset of India. We can see those pictures are taken by her at Museums, Monuments, etc., Her pictures still speak today.

The great lady who captured so many unforgettable events of Independent India, Homai Vyarawalla was born on December 9, 1913, to a Parsi family in Navsari, Gujarat. She married Manekshaw Jamshetji, an accountant and photographer of Times of India. After her husband died in 1969, she decided to give up photography because she doesn't want to be in the culture of Paparazzi.

"It was not worth it anymore. We had rules for photographers. We even followed a dress code. We treated each other with respect, like colleagues. But then, things changed for the worse. They were only interested in making a few quick bucks. I didn't want to be part of the crowd anymore" She stated these lines to the question of 'Why do you leave photography when you're at the peak of your profession'.

After her son Farouq's death she lived all alone in a small apartment at Vadodara, Gujarat. She spent her time almost in gardening. The great soul died on January 15, 2012, at the age of 98.

She was awarded Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of India. Google created a doodle in the name of 'First Lady of the Lens' on her 104th birth anniversary in a way to honor her. She is one of the greatest assets of India. She was the lady who has taken up such a challenging profession even in the time when women were oppressed in society.

Trail of St. Thomas Mount

Whenever I cross the 'St. Thomas Mount' railway station every time I travel in the Chennai electric train, I will feel the urge to go there. The Parangi Malai known as St. Thomas Mount, attracted me in some way. There was a reason for that.

The British decided to prepare a map of India during British rule. The work was called 'The Great Indian Arch.' Colonel William Lampton was commissioned for this magnificent task. Thomas Mount was the place where he began his work on Indian land surveying. Lampton died in Maharashtra at the age of 70, had created a map of India for more than 40 years which began in 1802.

His life was filled with pain just because he is black. We can't even imagine the obstacles, hazards, shame that he had faced. Everyone can be inspired and motivated by his success story. We all know how blacks were affected and how their rights were taken away in the past as well as in the present. Even though we are talking about equal rights for all humans, in the US black people are being excluded and treated as untouchables even now.

Basil Lewis D'Oliveira

We are talking about Basil Lewis D'Oliveira who was born in Cape Town, South Africa. The country has blacks as major populations. But in cricket, there were only white people.

At the height of apartheid, there was a rule that blacks should not play the game of whites known as cricket. At the same time, it was a game that blacks liked so much. They play competitively within themselves because they are ignored by whites.

That's how he became an excellent player in the non-whites game. However, he cannot even imagine playing for South Africa even in dreams. But people of South Africa, even whites admired his talent in cricket.

Let's try. If the South Africa team ignores him, he decided to try to become a player in the homeland of cricket, England. Basil wrote a letter about himself to John Arlot, a commentator for BBC Radio. John didn't know Basil. But John thought just because of race, one's talent shouldn't get wasted.

Two years have passed. Basil lost his confidence and was in a very traumatic condition because he convinced himself that he can't play cricket in his lifetime. At that time, he got a letter from John stating that he had been selected as a Professional cricket player in an English club in England. After that, Basil came to England and became a British citizen in 5 years. Basil was selected to play for the England cricket team in the year of 1966. His batting record had been increasing with each match.

Then the England team was to travel to South Africa for a match. It's high time for Basil to prove his talents to his motherland where he got rejected just because of his race. In his previous match with Australia, Basil didn't bat well almost in all matches. But in the last match, he scored 158 runs for England and became the reason for England to win the cup.

His next tour with South Africa. The state then said that we would never allow a non-white cricketer to play in their land. England said that Basil had been dismissed from the South Africa Tour due to a lack of talent in the previous tour with Australia. England was in turmoil in favor of Basil. Basil maintained his silence because of his second nation which he loved the most, abandoned himself for no reason.

Some years later, luck came back. Basil replaced bowler Cartwright as Basil was the best all-rounder.

At the same time, South Africa canceled all matches with England due to the inclusion of Basil.

In a year, South Africa became a world-apartheid country due to its inhumane apartheid policies towards blacks.

A whole country (England) was in turmoil for the elimination of a player and the withdrawal of a country (South Africa) from the competition for the inclusion of a player, both have happened only in Basil's life.

He was married to Naomi, their sons Damin D'Oliveira and Ivan D'Oliveira both have become as cricket players who play for South Africa. A land which thrown Basil out for no reason, he then proved cricket is not just a game for him; it's his life; he solely dedicated his breath to cricket.

Now we can say he is a God of cricket and the light of Black people in South Africa. He passed on cricket to his next generation and his sons serve for their land, South Africa.

He died on November 19, 2011, at the age of 80.
