For those individuals who know me, and those individuals who wishes to know me; This is my passion. What drives me to stand up for what I belief. Mother Earth is extremely important to me.

As humans we are born into sin. We are born with this DNA that runs through our veins: we are cold blooded murders. We are born to kill, steals, and back stab each. Our destructive ways are pure evil. We are not only destroying our lovely Mother Earth. She has done nothing but good to us. She had provides, nourishes us, and protects us. Yet, some of us humans just sit around and as we say in French “scratch in our ass.” Some people complain while doing nothing, and watch while others selfish people destroying our innocent earth. We bug ourselves way too much; we are doing things that make thee Protector of our life ill. Why are we destroying our planet? Why are we over killing? Why are we overfishing in our beautiful oceans? Why are we over killing trees and causing destruction in our world? Are we that bored with ourselves, or are we stupid, or are we just plain evil. We use animals for lab research, and we destroy each other in the name of our self-fish evil. We conquer what does not belong to us. No matter how much materials, stuffs, and money we might have, we cannot take it with us once we die. People are born naked into this world, and naked they will die. We came into this world with nothing; indeed, we will leave this world with nothing. Why not stop conquers, rather start appreciates things around you. The blessing of the free air, the tree’s the animals, and be thankful for everything including the little things. Life is too short; the creator put us in this earth to be a caretaker while here on earth, let’s enjoys the simple thing, let’s be thankful for the simple thing, let’s appreciate everything in this world.

When you look around you, what do you see? When you look at an animal how do you feel? When you touch the dirt on the earth what does your mind say? When you see a flying animal, what does your heart tells you? When we get into an airplane and flying from one destination to the next, how do you reacted? Are you Thankful for Mother? Are you thankful for breathing, for waking up in the morning and see the sunshine once again? The creator of heavens and earth does not have to grant you favor or allow you to wake up the next day, yet his mercy and grace shine upon us every single moment in this world. So if you’re granting mercy and grace why are we not giving that same mercy and grace back to our planet, back to our animals, back to our oceans? It brings tears in my eyes, when I see evil is being done to Mother Earth, to the Oceans, and to animals around the world. I love animals more than I love humans. I love Mother Earth more than I love my own life. I love the ocean more than I enjoy breathing. What are the types and causes of muscle cramps?

Skeletal muscle cramps can be categorized into four major types. These include "true" cramps, tetany, contractures, and dystonic cramps. Cramps are categorized according to their different causes and the muscle groups they affect.

"True" cramps

"True" cramps involve part or all of a single muscle or a group of muscles that generally act together, such as the muscles that flex several adjacent fingers. Most authorities agree that "true" cramps are caused by hyperexcitability of the nerves that stimulate the muscles. They are overwhelmingly the most common type of skeletal muscle cramps. "True" cramps can occur in a variety of circumstances as follows:

Injury: Persistent muscle spasm may occur as a protective mechanism following an injury, such as a broken bone. In this instance, the spasm tends to minimize movement and stabilize the area of injury. Injury of the muscle alone may cause the muscle to spasm.

Vigorous activity: "True" cramps are commonly associated with the vigorous use of muscles and muscle fatigue (in sports or with unaccustomed activities). Such cramps may come during the activity or later, sometimes many hours later. Likewise, muscle fatigue from sitting or lying for an extended period in an awkward position, or any repetitive use can cause cramps. Older adults are at risk for cramps when performing vigorous or strenuous physical activities.

Rest cramps: Cramps at rest are very common, especially in older adults, but may be experienced at any age, including childhood. Rest cramps often occur during the night. While not life-threatening, night cramps (commonly known as nocturnal cramps) can be painful, disruptive of sleep, and they can recur frequently (that is, many times a night, and/or many nights each week). The actual cause of night cramps is unknown. Sometimes, such cramps are initiated by making a movement that shortens the muscle. An example is pointing the toe down while lying in bed, which shortens the calf muscle, a common site of cramps.

Dehydration: Sports and other vigorous activities can cause excessive fluid loss from perspiration. This kind of dehydration increases the likelihood of "true" cramps. These cramps are more likely in warm weather and can be an early sign of heat stroke. Chronic volume depletion of body fluids from diuretics (medicine that promote urination) and poor fluid intake may act similarly to predispose to cramps in seniors. Sodium depletion has also been associated with cramps. Loss of sodium, the most abundant chemical constituent of body fluids outside the cell, is usually a function of dehydration.

Body fluid shifts: "True" cramps also may be experienced in other conditions that feature an unusual distribution of body fluids. An example is cirrhosis of the liver, with fluid in the abdominal cavity (ascites). Similarly, cramps are a relatively frequent complication of the rapid body fluid changes that occur during artificial kidney treatment (hemodialysis).

Low blood calcium, magnesium: Low blood levels of either calcium or magnesium directly increase the excitability of both the nerve endings and the muscles they stimulate. This may be a predisposing factor for the spontaneous "true" cramps experienced by many older adults, as well as for those that are commonly noted during pregnancy. Low levels of calcium and magnesium are common in a normal pregnancy unless these minerals are supplemented to the diet. Cramps are seen in any circumstance that decreases the availability of calcium or magnesium in body fluids, such as from diuretics, hyperventilation (overbreathing), excessive vomiting, inadequate calcium and/or magnesium in the diet, inadequate calcium absorption due to vitamin D deficiency, poor function of the parathyroid gland (a tiny gland in the neck that regulates calcium balance), and other conditions.

Low potassium: Low potassium levels occasionally cause muscle cramps, although it is more common for low potassium to be associated with muscle weakness.

Tetany

In tetany, all of the nerve cells in the body are activated, which then stimulate the muscles. This reaction causes spasms or cramps throughout the body. The name tetany is derived from the effect of the tetanus toxin on the nerves. However, the name is now commonly applied to muscle cramping from other conditions, such as low blood levels of calcium and magnesium. Low calcium and low magnesium, which increase the activity of nerve tissue nonspecifically, also can produce tetanic cramps. Often, such cramps are accompanied by evidence of hyperactivity of other nerve functions in addition to muscle stimulation. For instance, low blood calcium not only causes spasm of the muscles of the hands and wrists, but it can also cause a sensation of numbness and tingling around the mouth and other areas.

Sometimes, tetanic cramps are indistinguishable from "true" cramps. The accompanying changes of sensation or other nerve functions that occurs with tetany may not be apparent because the cramp pain is masking or distracting from it.

Contractures

Contractures result when the muscles are unable to relax. The constant spasms are caused by a depletion of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), an energy chemical within the cell. This prevents muscle fiber relaxation. The nerves are inactive in this form of muscle spasm.

Contractures can be inherited (for example, McArdle's disease, which is a defect of the breakdown of glycogen to sugar within the muscle cell) or acquired (for example, hyperthyroid myopathy, which is a muscle disease that is associated with an overactive thyroid). Cramps of this category are uncommon.

Dystonic cramps

The final category is dystonic cramps, in which muscles that are not needed for the intended movement are stimulated to contract. Muscles that are affected by this type of cramping include those that ordinarily work in the opposite direction of the intended movement, and/or others that exaggerate the movement. Some dystonic cramps usually affect small groups of muscles (eyelids, jaws, neck, larynx, etc.). The hands and arms may be affected during the performance of repetitive activities such as those associated with handwriting (writer's cramp), typing, playing certain musical instruments, and many others. Each of these repetitive activities may also produce "true" cramps from muscle fatigue. Dystonic cramps are not as common as "true" cramps.

Do all muscle cramps fit into the above categories?

No. Not all cramps are readily categorized in the preceding manner since these categories best apply to cramps that are the major muscle problem a patient has. Many cramps are a relatively minor part of nerve and muscle diseases; other muscle symptoms are usually more prominent in these diseases. Some examples include: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease) with weakness and muscle wasting; radiculopathy (spinal nerve irritation or compression from various causes) with pain, distortion or loss of sensation, and/or weakness; diseases of the peripheral nerves, such as diabetic neuropathy, with distorted and diminished sensation and weakness; and a number of primarily dystonic muscle diseases

Facebook's terms of service (TOS) used to say that when you closed an account on their network, any rights they claimed to the original content you uploaded would expire. Not anymore.

Now, anything you upload to Facebook can be used by Facebook in any way they deem fit, forever, no matter what you do later.* Want to close your account? Good for you, but Facebook still has the right to do whatever it wants with your old content. They can even sublicense it if they want.

You hereby grant Facebook an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to (a) use, copy, publish, stream, store, retain, publicly perform or display, transmit, scan, reformat, modify, edit, frame, translate, excerpt, adapt, create derivative works and distribute (through multiple tiers), any User Content you (i) Post on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof subject only to your privacy settings or (ii) enable a user to Post, including by offering a Share Link on your website and (b) to use your name, likeness and image for any purpose, including commercial or advertising, each of (a) and (b) on or in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof.

That language is the same as in the old TOS, but there was an important couple of lines at the end of that section that have been removed:

Furthermore, the "Termination" section near the end of the TOS states:

The following sections will survive any termination of your use of the Facebook Service: Prohibited Conduct, User Content, Your Privacy Practices, Gift Credits, Ownership; Proprietary Rights, Licenses, Submissions, User Disputes; Complaints, Indemnity, General Disclaimers, Limitation on Liability, Termination and Changes to the Facebook Service, Arbitration, Governing Law; Venue and Jurisdiction and Other.

Make sure you never upload anything you don't feel comfortable giving away forever, because it's Facebook's now.

(Note that as several readers have pointed out, this seems to be subject to your privacy settings, so anything you've protected from full public view doesn't seem to be usable in other ways regardless.)

Update 2: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has posted a response on the Facebook blog. A crude summary: "trust us, we're not doing this to profit from you, it's so we are legally protected as we enable you to share content with other users and services." His point, I think, is that there are interesting issues of ownership and rights clearance when you're dealing with content shared in a social network:

Still, the interesting thing about this change in our terms is that it highlights the importance of these issues and their complexity. People want full ownership and control of their information so they can turn off access to it at any time. At the same time, people also want to be able to bring the information others have shared with them-like email addresses, phone numbers, photos and so on-to other services and grant those services access to those people's information. These two positions are at odds with each other. There is no system today that enables me to share my email address with you and then simultaneously lets me control who you share it with and also lets you control what services you share it with.

Update 3: I just found this clarification posted earlier this afternoon on The Industry Standard. It was emailed to them by a Facebook representative and seems to confirm that your privacy settings trump all else:

We are not claiming and have never claimed ownership of material that users upload. The new Terms were clarified to be more consistent with the behavior of the site. That is, if you send a message to another user (or post to their wall, etc...), that content might not be removed by Facebook if you delete your account (but can be deleted by your friend). Furthermore, it is important to note that this license is made subject to the user's privacy settings. So any limitations that a user puts on display of the relevant content (e.g. To specific friends) are respected by Facebook. Also, the license only allows us to use the info "in connection with the Facebook Service or the promotion thereof." Users generally expect and understand this behavior as it has been a common practice for web services since the advent of webmail. For example, if you send a message to a friend on a webmail service, that service will not delete that message from your friend's inbox if you delete your account

FEMA CONCENTRATION CAMPS: Locations and Executive Orders

There over 800 prison camps in the United States, all fully operational and ready to receive prisoners. They are all staffed and even surrounded by full-time guards, but they are all empty. These camps are to be operated by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) should Martial Law need to be implemented in the United States and all it would take is a presidential signature on a proclamation and the attorney general's signature on a warrant to which a list of names is attached. Ask yourself if you really want to be on Ashcroft's list.

The Rex 84 Program was established on the reasoning that if a "mass exodus" of illegal aliens crossed the Mexican/US border, they would be quickly rounded up and detained in detention centers by FEMA. Rex 84 allowed many military bases to be closed down and to be turned into prisons.

Operation Cable Splicer and Garden Plot are the two sub programs which will be implemented once the Rex 84 program is initiated for its proper purpose. Garden Plot is the program to control the population. Cable Splicer is the program for an orderly takeover of the state and local governments by the federal government. FEMA is the executive arm of the coming police state and thus will head up all operations. The Presidential Executive Orders already listed on the Federal Register also are part of the legal framework for this operation.

The camps all have railroad facilities as well as roads leading to and from the detention facilities. Many also have an airport nearby. The majority of the camps can house a population of 20,000 prisoners. Currently, the largest of these facilities is just outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. The Alaskan facility is a massive mental health facility and can hold approximately 2 million people.

Vandenburg AFB - Rex 84 facility, located near Lompoc & Santa Maria. Internment facility is located near the oceanside, close to Space Launch Complex #6, also called "Slick Six". The launch site has had "a flawless failure record" and is rarely used. Norton AFB - (closed base) now staffed with UN according to some sources. Tule Lake - area of "wildlife refuge", accessible by unpaved road, just inside Modoc County. Fort Ord - Closed in 1994, this facility is now an urban warfare training center for US and foreign troops, and may have some "P.O.W. - C.I." enclosures. Twentynine Palms Marine Base - Birthplace of the infamous "Would you shoot American citizens?" Quiz. New camps being built on "back 40". Avon Park - Air Force gunnery range, Avon Park has an on-base "correctional facility" which was a former WWII detention camp. Camp Krome - DoJ detention/interrogation center, Rex 84 facility Eglin AFB - This base is over 30 miles long, from Pensacola to Hwy 331 in De Funiak Springs. High capacity facility, presently manned and populated with some prisoners. Pensacola - Federal Prison Camp Everglades - It is believed that a facility may be carved out of the wilds here.

GEORGIA
Ft. Benning - Located east of Columbus near Alabama state line. Rex 84 site - Prisoners brought in via Lawson Army airfield. Ft. Mc Pherson - US Force Command - Multiple reports that this will be the national headquarters and coordinating center for foreign/UN troop movement and detainee collection. Ft. Gordon - West of Augusta - No information at this time. Unadilla - Dooly County - Manned, staffed FEMA prison on route 230, no prisoners. Oglethorpe - Macon County; facility is located five miles from Montezuma, three miles from Oglethorpe. This FEMA prison has no staff and no prisoners. Morgan - Calhoun County, FEMA facility is fully manned & staffed - no prisoners. Camilla - Mitchell County, south of Albany. This FEMA facility is located on Mt. Zion Rd approximately 5.7 miles south of Camilla. Unmanned - no prisoners, no staff. Hawkinsville - Wilcox County; Five miles east of town, fully manned and staffed but no prisoners. Located on fire road 100/Upper River Road Abbeville - South of Hawkinsville on US route 129; south of town off route 280 near Ocmulgee River. FEMA facility is staffed but without prisoners. McRae - Telfair County - 1.5 miles west of McRae on Hwy 134 (8th St). Facility is on Irwinton Avenue off 8th St., manned & staffed - no prisoners. Fort Gillem - South side of Atlanta - FEMA designated detention facility. Fort Stewart - Savannah area - FEMA designated detention facility

HAWAII
Halawa Heights area - Crematory facility located in hills above city. Area is marked as a state department of health laboratory. Barbers Point NAS - There are several military areas that could be equipped for detention / deportation. Honolulu - Detention transfer facility at the Honolulu airport similar in construction to the one in.Oklahoma (pentagon-shaped building where airplanes can taxi up to).

IDAHO
Minidoka/Jerome Counties - WWII Japanese-American internment facility possibly under renovation. Clearwater National Forest - Near Lolo Pass - Just miles from the Montana state line near Moose Creek, this unmanned facility is reported to have a nearby airfield. Wilderness areas - Possible location. No data.

ILLINOIS
Marseilles - Located on the Illinois River off Interstate 80 on Hwy 6. It is a relatively small facility with a cap of 1400 prisoners. Though it is small it is designed like prison facilities with barred windows, but the real smoking gun is the presence of military vehicles. Being located on the Illinois River it is possible that prisoners will be brought in by water as well as by road and air. This facility is approximately 75 miles west of Chicago. National Guard training area nearby. Scott AFB - Barbed wire prisoner enclosure reported to exist just off-base. More info needed, as another facility on-base is beieved to exist. Pekin - This Federal satellite prison camp is also on the Illinois River, just south of Peoria. It supplements the federal penitentiary in Marion, which is equipped to handle additional population outside on the grounds. Chanute AFB - Rantoul, near Champaign/Urbana - This closed base had WWII - era barracks that were condemned and torn down, but the medical facility was upgraded and additional fencing put up in the area. More info needed. Marion - Federal Penitentiary and satellite prison camp inside Crab Orchard Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. Manned, staffed, populated fully. Greenfield - Two federal correctional "satellite prison camps" serving Marion - populated as above. Shawnee National Forest - Pope County - This area has seen heavy traffic of foreign military equipment and troops via Illinois Central Railroad, which runs through the area. INDIANA
Indianapolis / Marion County - Amtrak railcar repair facility (closed); controversial site of a major alleged detention / processing center. Although some sources state that this site is a "red herring", photographic and video evidence suggests otherwise. This large facility contains large 3-4 inch gas mains to large furnaces (crematoria??), helicopter landing pads, railheads for prisoners, Red/Blue/Green zones for classifying/processing incoming personnel, one-way turnstiles, barracks, towers, high fences with razor wire, etc. Personnel with government clearance who are friendly to the patriot movement took a guided tour of the facility to confirm this site. This site is located next to a closed refrigeration plant facility. Ft. Benjamin Harrison - Located in the northeast part of Indianapolis, this base has been decomissioned from "active" use but portions are still ideally converted to hold detainees. Helicopter landing areas still exist for prisoners to be brought in by air, land & rail. Crown Point - Across street from county jail, former hospital. One wing presently being used for county work-release program, 80% of facility still unused. Possible FEMA detention center or holding facility. Camp Atterbury - Facility is converted to hold prisoners and boasts two active compounds presently configured for minumum security detainees. Located just west of Interstate 65 near Edinburgh, south of Indianapolis. Terre Haute - Federal Correctional Institution, Satellite prison camp and death facility. Equipped with crematoria reported to have a capacity of 3,000 people a day. FEMA designated facility located here. Fort Wayne - This city located in Northeast Indiana has a FEMA designated detention facility, accessible by air, road and nearby rail. Kingsbury - This "closed" military base is adjacent to a state fish & wildlife preserve. Part of the base is converted to an industrial park, but the southern portion of this property is still used. It is bordered on the south by railroad, and is staffed with some foreign-speaking UN troops. A local police officer who was hunting and camping close to the base in the game preserve was accosted, roughed up, and warned by the English-speaking unit commander to stay away from the area. It was suggested to the officer that the welfare of his family would depend on his "silence". Located just southeast of LaPorte. Jasper-Pulaski Wildlife Area - Youth Corrections farm located here. Facility is "closed", but is still staffed and being "renovated". Total capacity unknown. Grissom AFB - This closed airbase still handles a lot of traffic, and has a "state-owned" prison compound on the southern part of the facility.

. Jefferson Proving Grounds - Southern Indiana - This facility was an active base with test firing occuring daily. Portions of the base have been opened to create an industrial park, but other areas are still highly restricted. A camp is believed to be located "downrange". Facility is equipped with an airfield and has a nearby rail line. Newport - Army Depot - VX nerve gas storage facility. Secret meetings were held here in 1998 regarding the addition of the Kankakee River watershed to the Heritage Rivers Initiative. Hammond - large enclosure identified in FEMA-designated city.

OTHER LOCATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES
There are many other locations not listed above that are worthy of consideration as a possible detention camp site, but due to space limitations and the time needed to verify, could not be included here. Virtually all military reservations, posts, bases, stations, & depots can be considered highly suspect (because it is "federal" land). Also fitting this category are "Regional Airports" and "International Airports" which also fall under federal jurisdiction and have limited-access areas. Mental hospitals, closed hospitals & nursing homes, closed military bases, wildlife refuges, state prisons, toxic waste dumps, hotels and other areas all have varying degrees of potential for being a detention camp area. The likelihood of a site being suspect increases with transportation access to the site, including airports/airstrips, railheads, navigable waterways & ports, interstate and US highways. Some facilities are "disguised" as industrial or commercial properties, camouflaged or even wholly contained inside large buildings (Indianapolis) or factories. Many inner-city buildings left vacant during the de-industrialization of America have been quietly acquired and held, sometimes retrofitted for their new uses.

CANADA
Our Canadian friends tell us that virtually all Canadian military bases, especially those north of the 50th Parallel, are all set up with concentration camps. Not even half of these can be listed, but here are a few sites with the massive land space to handle any population:
Suffield CFB - just north of Medicine Hat, less than 60 miles from the USA.
Primrose Lake Air Range - 70 miles northeast of Edmonton.
Wainwright CFB - halfway between Medicine Hat and Primrose Lake.

NPR.org, February 25, 2009 · Moderate alcohol use increases the risk of cancers of the breast and certain other types of cancer, according to a new study in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

But the study raises more questions than it answers.

British researchers from Oxford University analyzed health information on nearly 1.3 million women in the United Kingdom. Most of them were moderate drinkers, defined as having fewer than seven drinks per week.

According to their analysis, if 1,000 women drank an average of one drink a day, there would be an extra 11 cases of breast cancer in the group. The breast cancer link has been found in several other studies and is generally accepted. The study also found moderate drinking raised the risk of cancers of the mouth, rectum and liver.

The report was accompanied by an editorial stating that there's no safe level of alcohol consumption for women.

The publication has led to a bit of a media frenzy. The Washington Post reported that "sipping pinot noir might not be such a good idea after all." And the BBC said, "One drink may be one too many."

But epidemiologists are more circumspect. They point to other studies showing that moderate drinking reduces the risk of another major killer, heart disease.

Dr. JoAnn Manson was co-author of a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine in 1995. She and her colleagues looked at what happened to 86,000 women over time. They found that a drink a day lowered the overall death rate, mostly by lowering the risk of heart disease.

Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, says the new study helps women make more informed choices about alcohol use. But, she says, it shouldn't be a cause for alarm.

"A woman with a high risk of breast cancer and an average risk of heart disease may want to avoid alcohol," she says. "But a woman with a high risk of heart disease and an average risk of breast cancer might find the trade-off acceptable."

Manson and other epidemiologists are hoping the Oxford University researchers will publish more information, including the group's overall death rate and whether smokers are more prone to alcohol-related cancers.

As companies race to bring a "pink Viagra" to pharmacy shelves, some people are doing everything they can to stop them. At the forefront of this countermovement is Leonore Tiefer, clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine, who in 2000—two years after Viagra's approval—gathered a group of what she calls "like-minded feminists" to form the New View Campaign. Their goal: to educate about the "medicalization of women's sexuality." Their beef with companies developing a Viagra for women: If a female libido drug comes on the market, healthy women who aren't bothered by having a low sex drive may face societal pressure to seek "treatment." U.S. News spoke with Tiefer. Excerpts:

Why did you organize the New View Campaign?
About five minutes after Viagra hit the market, people started asking: "Where is a Viagra for women?" and I had never heard any woman express a desire for such a drug. So I thought someone with credibility had better stand up and say, "Excuse me, the emperor is naked—this is not what women want, and this is not what's in their best interest." I decided I was going to be that person.

What do you mean by the "medicalization of women's sexuality"?
Women complain about many sexual problems; among them is a loss of interest in sex, irregular sex, interest in the wrong partner, lots of things. But how do you classify those complaints? What language do you use? These are professional matters that I think have been hijacked by agents of the pharmaceutical industry.

In 2006, about 1.4 million off-label prescriptions for testosterone were written for women. Doesn't that suggest women want a libido-boosting drug?
It's hard to know. I mean, doctors prescribe like taxi drivers honk. It's their job. And doctors don't have that much to offer when people come in and complain about their sexual problems, so they give them a prescription. They're not going to sit there for an hour and a half and explain to you their feelings about how your labia are connected to your inability to relax, and how your inability to relax is connected to your loss of desire.

What would you encourage such women to think about?
The first thing I would do would be not to consider [low desire] a medical condition. Approach the idea of medical treatment with tremendous hesitancy and caution. Research suggests that to lose desire is normal. I would regard fluctuations in sexual interest not just as normal but as a good thing built into one's feelings about pretty much everything; with the seasons, with age, with changes in a relationship, with changes in health, with changes in work responsibilities. Everything comes and goes.

But what about women for whom diminished testosterone might be the culprit?
We don't know that a lack of testosterone is behind the problem. There was a big study in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2005 that has never been refuted showing that low testosterone may have nothing to do with [low libido]. When a company says, "Oh, but women lose testosterone after menopause," that may well be true, but there are plenty of hot-to-trot women who have zippo testosterone. Now why is that?

So you're saying a case of low testosterone doesn't necessarily justify treatment?
Again, it's one of those underlying assumptions that when you're 60, and your physiology is different from when you were 40, it's a problem that you can reverse by somehow replenishing the things being lost. Your whole body is changing; you don't need the things you needed earlier. It's not a problem to have normal physiological changes in your body.

If drugs for low desire aren't a good solution, what is?
The only thing you need a solution for is a problem. I hope some women who take a look at their sex lives won't need a solution. But if you do decide you need a solution, there are lots of them: Conversation and communication with a partner; sexual education with a partner; education for yourself about sexual realities and options. If you're not where you want to be, then you might say to yourself, "Maybe there's some more I need to learn about sex, not just putting [tab] A into slot B, but about how imagination fuels desire." The mind leads and the body follows.

A lot of people accuse me of drumming up business for sex therapy, which is not true. I don't think sex therapy is necessarily a better solution than medical treatment. I'm arguing against the treatment mentality.

What do you think will happen when one of these drugs is finally approved for women?
I think it will be advertised out of the ballpark. I think it will be a calamity.

Why?
Because these drugs will be promoted and prescribed greatly in excess of what they're approved for—what they've been tested for—as we've seen happen with all the blockbuster drugs that are million-dollar babies of the pharmaceutical pantheon. And time and time again these overprescribed, overpromoted drugs have turned out to have dangers, as with antidepressants or Vioxx. But I feel that if I hold out long enough, the notion that safety is extremely more important than consumer demand will become self-evident.

Why do you think it's dangerous to consider using a drug for what you view as natural changes that women experience?
I think it's dangerous because drugs are toxic substances with limited beneficial "side" effects. And certainly the drugs that are being proposed for women, which are very different from Viagra, are not just washout drugs limited to end-organ temporary effects. They're steroid hormones. We have the right to be as naive as we were 10 years ago [with Viagra]. There's too much water under this bridge.

What's the bottom line?
Let the people who know what they're doing decide whether proposed drugs have demonstrated safety and efficacy. Don't take unapproved drugs; wait for the government to make a ruling. Meanwhile, try to think about sex as a really unique thing.

The world’s leading offshore firms were in expansion mode in 2008, with four of the five top players opening more than one new office base.

Our survey revealas that in raw partner numbers Maples and Calder remains the largest firm, with 62 partners and 222 lawyers. However, the firm slowed its growth in 2008 and concentrated on its Dublin office, where it made a number of strategic hires.

The firm has just 20 equity partners, which it has revealed publicly for the first time.

Offshore firms are reluctant to make known the extent of their equity partnerships, and of the top five firms only Maples and Ogier came through with actual figures.

Under this criteria, Ogier, with 28 equity partners and 835 staff, dwarfs Maples, which houses 20 equity partners and 618 staff members.

Neither Appleby, Conyers Dill & Pearman nor Walkers revealed their equity partner bases.

Ogier is also the winner in terms of number of offices locations with 11, putting it on a par with Conyers.

Ogier opened in Tokyo and Bahrain in 2008, while Conyers became the first offshore law firm to enter Moscow, where it opened in March, before it set up a base in Mauritius in July and then one in São Paulo in December.

Mourant du Feu & Jeune was the only firm to close an office, with the closure coming in New York, after New York partner Simon Felton relocated to London. It may turn out to be a smart move – after all, we have seen what can happen if firms grow too quickly.

The next 12 months are likely to be one of steadied growth, with most firms confident that they will be able to continue their expansions, albeit modestly.

Cayman Islands-headquartered Maples and Calder continues its global dominance of the offshore elite with 62 partners and 222 lawyers worldwide.

At the start of 2008 co-managing partner Charles Jennings predicted it would more likely be a year of organic growth with appointments only being made in “exceptional circumstances”.

The firm made just three lateral partner hires in 2009 – all of them to its Dublin office, which has gone from strength-to-strength since it set up in January 2006. The strategic hire of former A&L Goodbody and Matheson Ormsby Prentice partner Andrew Doyle to run the office gives Maples a strong reach into the Irish lawyer market.

In June the firm appointed Matheson Ormsby Prentice partner Edward Miller to the Irish corporate team. This was followed by the appointment of investment funds partner Barry McGrath and leveraged funds Nollaig Murphy from A&L Goodbody. Murphy is considered a world leader in capital markets law while Jennings says the office, under the leadership of joint managing partner Julian Reddyhough, has been through “significant expansion” and now employs more than 120 professionals.

Maples continues to grow its London office with the ongoing recruitment of lawyers to its funds practice. The Dubai office has also “had a successful year”, according to Jennings.

Lateral partner hires are a rare occurrence at Maples, which prefers to promote from within. In December the firm added four to the Cayman partnership, including Wanda Ebanks, Andreas Hang, Nigel Porteous and Martin Livingston.

2 - Appleby

The strategic hire of Jeanne Bartlett as head of Appleby’s structured finance practice in 2007 set the theme for growth in 2008. Bartlett is to move to Appleby’s Dubai offices in 2009 after the firm receives approval for trading.

Managing partner Peter Bubenzer says Appleby sees “significant opportunities” for growth in the Middle East.

Appleby operates a broad office-based model, with global practice bases, and is among the largest firms in terms of both partner and office bases.
In 2007 the firm opened in Mauritius, the first offshore firm to take advantage of impending legislative changes that aim to open up the sector to foreign firms.

The announcement of a Dubai office was followed by the opening of a Zurich office in December 2008.

Appleby also continues to have a strong partnership base, increasing from 47 to 55 in 2008. The firm prefers internal promotions and in April made up eight lawyers to the partnership. The Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and Jersey office all gained two partner promotions, while Bermuda and Cayman took one counsel each.

Appleby said it would continue to consider further expansion in 2009 but acknowledged there would be a drop off in transactional work as the economic downturn takes hold.

Walkers shelved plans to merge with Mourant du Feu & Jeune at the beginning of 2008, preferring instead to grow organically.

In common with many offshore firms Walkers shifted focus to the Eastern economies in 2008, concentrating on growing its Hong Kong office.

The hire of Maples and Calder's Everton Robertson to its Hong Kong office in September was a coup for Walkers. Walkers also made ten associate hires in Hong Kong over the past 12 months, including Jennifer Lee, Michael Padarin and corporate administration team member Cecilia Cheung.

All this preceded the unveiling of a new Singapore office that is set to replicate the success of the Hong Kong base. Walkers will move John Rogers to Singapore from Hong Kong, alongside Ashley Gunning.

Walkers is likely to grow its distressed funds business in 2009 having seen its instructions shoot up in the last quarter.

As the firm points out: “There has been a shift in the nature of work that our clients are bringing to us. On the hedgefund side there will be more of a focus on restructuring distressed funds rather than launching as many new funds as we have seen in the past.”

4 - Conyers Dill & Pearman

Conyers Dill & Pearman has continued to pursue a strategy to align its office base with its clients’ needs and in 2008 opened in three new jurisdictions.

In March it became the first offshore firm to open an office in Moscow, headed by Caroline O’Hare, and in June it transferred Alexey Kuzmichev along with Niel Jones to the office from Bermuda.

In July, Conyers established a presence in Mauritius, adding the provision of Mauritius legal advice and the incorporation of Mauritius Global Business Companies to its roster of jurisdictions.

In December, it became the first offshore law firm to establish a significant presence in Brazil, opening in São Paulo. Alan Dickson was appointed as managing partner of the São Paulo office and was joined by partner Benjamin Dyer.

Meanwhile, Conyers continues to promote and hire across its core offices. In the Cayman Islands, the firm appointed Nigel Meeson QC to develop a litigation practice.

The Dubai office has been bolstered by the addition of Kerri Lefebvre as partner, while Fawaz Elmalki rejoined the firm as an associate. Dubai has also recently received further reinforcement with Sonia Xavier joining as an associate to advise on Mauritius law.

There have also been promotions in Singapore for Janice Oh and the hire of Japanese speaking lawyers to the Hong Kong office.

Associate Anthony Smith relocated from the Bermuda office to London and in October Christopher Johnson-Gilbert took over as managing partner there.

5 - Ogier

Jersey-headquartered Ogier is one of the larger Channel Islands firms, with a broad geographical base that spans from Hong Kong to Uruguay. It is one of the fastest growers in the offshore elite.

In the past three years Ogier has merged with WSmiths to give it a presence in Hong Kong and New Zealand. This was followed by office openings in Dubai and Dublin in 2007 and at the end of last year it opened in Tokyo and launched in Bahrain. The Bahraini joint venture with accounting firm Keypoint makes Ogier the first offshore firm to open in the jurisdiction. “This is an opportunity to commit to the region in a way others haven’t done before,” according to the firm.

The biggest change for Ogier in 2009 will be its management line-up, with executive chairman Jonathan White standing down from the board after 18 years in the post (see Profile, page 26). The firm has also created two new management posts: Clive Chaplin, who currently heads up Ogier’s Business and Trust Law Group in Jersey, will become chairman, while Nick Kershaw, currently managing partner of Ogier’s legal practice in Jersey, will become group chief executive.

Ogier says its geographical reach means it is well positioned to weather the economic storm: “We would expect to see different deal flows coming through from emerging markets such as the Middle East and Asia, while the more traditional markets might be quieter.”

6 - Arendt & Medernach

Arendt & Medernach is one of Luxemburg’s leading firms with its headquarters in the jurisdiction and a second office in Brussels. It has representative offices in key legal sectors across the globe, most recently adding Dubai. Arendt’s financial services group acts for around 40 per cent of banks with branches in Luxemburg, while its corporate and M&A practice acts for eight of the top largest private equity funds worldwide. The firm is well placed to take advantage of the economic downturn with a strong dispute resolution group headed by of counsel Jean Medernach.

Zurich-headquartered Homburger continued to dominate European M&A activity in 2008, completing nine deals worth an estimated $52bn (£36.39bn) in 2008, according to Thomson Reuters European M&A tables. René Bosch, who heads the firm’s financial services group, counts banking giants Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank and UBS as clients. Homburger’s ten-partner litigation practice is also considered a force to be reckoned with.

The best friends agreement between Carey Olsen and offshore giant Maples and Calder signed in January 2008 “continues to be successful”, with the firms exchanging work between the two key offshore centres. Carey Olsen is solidly committed to the Channel Islands, where it aims to be a market leader. The firm has been recruiting to its offices in Guernsey and Jersey during 2008 with hires from law firms in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, as well as from local competitors. In March 2009 Carey Olsen’s Guernsey office will move to prestigious new offices in St Peter Port.

9 - Bedell Cristin

Bedell Cristin is three years into a five-year strategic growth plan that was kickstarted in 2006 with the opening of a Guernsey office base. Since then it has put two partners in the Guernsey office and the firm has seen an upturn in instructions as a result.

In September Bedell Cristin promoted four to the partnership: investment funds partner Simon Hopwood, commercial litigators Lisa Springate and James Gleeson, and capital markets partner Alasdair Hunter. It has also hired Pauline Gale as managing director of its London office who will be responsible for attracting private client work.

10 - Mourant du Feu & Jeune

For Mourant du Feu & Jeune 2008 was a year of repositioning. The firm shelved plans to merge with Walkers, then a shake up of its management saw chief executive Stephen Ball exit and, last month, it announced the sale of its sister financial companies. It also withdrew from New York, relocating partner Simon Felton to London.

There were a number of appointments too, including finance partner Richard de Basto and funds partner Matthew Feargrieve, both of whom joined the Cayman Islands office. With Jonathan Rigby now in the driving seat as managing partner, 2009 will see Mourant concentrate on its core client bases.

11 - Elvinger Hoss & Prussen

Anticipating “steady growth” in 2009, it has hired 18 lawyers across its core practice areas who are due to begin in March.

With a steady stream of instructions from UK firm Slaughter and May, Elvinger is well positioned to see out the recession.

Winner of The Lawyer Offshore Law Firm of the Year accolade last year, Cains is a firm that is consistently punching above its weight. In 2007 and 2008 it was listed by Hemscott as the firm with the most clients in the AIM 100, including 75 per cent of Indian-admitted clients in 2007.

In 2008, the Isle of Man-headquartered Cains opened in Singapore, strengthening its reach into India and South East Asia. This is a growth area for the firm and it is committed to growing its Brazil, Russia, India and China economy client base.

Closer to home, Cains is flexing its litigation credentials and directors Seth Caine and Peter C Lucas have been instructed as lawyers to the provisional liquidation of Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander (Isle of Man).

13 - Harneys

Offshore services firm Maitland Advisory set up shop in the Cayman Islands in 2008, formerly establishing itself as an offshore firm. The hire of Walkers star Sara Collins, head of the firm’s trusts disputes group, to the Cayman office was a coup for Maitland.

Maitland traditionally opted to position itself as an offshore trust services company, but in 2008 managing director Steve Georgala overhauled the firm’s strategic objective, which is now to build a law firm in each of the jurisdictions it operates in. “Sometimes these will have to be separate firms that are aligned with Maitland,” he told The Lawyer in June 2008.

The firm entered 2009 with a mission to expand its Spanish presence after appointing Kenneth Bonavia, former managing partner of Stephenson Harwood and DLA Piper in Madrid, to push the drive.

The firm describes 2008 as “a difficult year” in the global market and, as a result, spent it focused on client retention and organic growth.

Nevertheless Ozannes is considering further expansion into two new jurisdictions in 2009, although it is remaining tight-lipped on the destination.

The firm has seen an upturn in restructuring work, but, like many firms, a significant decline in instructions for big-ticket fund work.

17 - Triay & Triay

Both the firm’s corporate tax and private client practices are regarded among the best in their field.

Dickinson Cruickshank prefers to recruit senior associates and grow organically. In the last year it recruited senior associate Gill Crennell to the corporate practice from Addleshaw Goddard.

The firm says 2009 will be “a year of consolidation”, although it anticipates further growth in insolvency and creditor rights instructions.

19 - Oostvogels Pfister Feyten

Since it was established under the direction of managing partner Stef Oostvogels, the firm has grown to a team of 55 lawyers. It was the first Luxembourg offshore firm to open in London and in the past year has appointed Chokri Bouzidi to head the UK’s Luxembourg tax practice and moved over Harold Prize from the jurisdiction to head its investment funds practice.

Oostvogels says it has seen a slowdown in its capital market practice but it expects work across the tax, litigation, insolvency and banking and finance practices to rise.

20 - Collas Day

It is a move that has paid off, with Collas Day getting ever closer to opening a Jersey base. With that will come a series of hires, according to the firm. The recruitment drive will primarily affect the commercial and litigation practices.
