secondlivestock.com Second Livestock, a virtual reality world for battery-farmed chickens, draws parallels between how we treat animals and how we treat ourselves.Through a straight-faced parody of Second Life (a virtual reality world for humans) the project attracts non-traditional art audiences to a conversation about the reasons behind and consequences of people choosing to spend more of their lives in virtual spaces. The work exists as a website and performance. The performance consists of a presentation, an interactive demonstration of Second Livestock, and an open discussion. The vocabulary of the presentation and visual language of all related media mocks the marketing devices and hype of technology firms introducing new, “disruptive” technologies. The artist performs the presentation in the persona of the CEO of Second Livestock. After the presentation the audience is invited to participate in an open discussion and experience the VR world through a “prototype” of the CCI (Chicken-Computer Interface). This prototype consists of the Oculus Rift VR Headset and a custom omni-directional treadmill. An assistant helps audience members to use the CCI and supplies the CEO with technical details.

The Grand Finale Winners announcements for MachinimUWA VI & the UWA Centenary 3D Art Challenge (both themed REFLECTIONS) will be held from 6am SLT on the 4th of August. As serendipity would have it, we have 64 Machinima, and 64 3D artworks in the running for more than L$1,800,000 (L$1.8 mil) in prizes.

UWA would like to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the co-host for the event, LaPiscean Liberty (of AviewTV), the unsung hero of film in Second Life. L$45,000 has been set aside for all film & machinima lovers who take part in a special participation event. We are asking everyone to view the machinima and give us whom you think will finish in the TOP 10 in order 1st - 10th as decided by the official judging panel. (email jayjayaustralia@hotmail.com OR list them on a notecard to Jayjay Zifanwe - please put your name on the title of the notecard with the words MACHINIMUWA VI Audience Event).

This is not a popularity vote. Your top 10 is your prediction of who the actual top 10 will be according to the official judging.

The 5 participants whose order comes closest to the final order as decided by the judging panel (Listed here), will win for themselves between L$5,000 - L$15,000. The first prize winner will also be invited to be on the panel for the next grand art challenge and ALL 5 will receive in the mail a special pack that includes a copy of the book, '100 Treasures of UWA' which was produced for UWA's Centenary.

MachinimUWA VI: Bay, Veruca, Giannis, Emmo, Talia & Luci take the total to 50!

Closing in on 24 hours to go, we bring another beautiful selection of 6 to the challenge, taking the total to 50!. Luci von Smörgås continues the European renaissance with a work whose timing is perfect given the recent Supreme Court decision in the USA, Emmo Wei's Pale Horses, brings to mind the series of tragedies that ended with us burying our hearts at Wounded Knee, Veruca Vandyke returns, and shows what happens when relationships break down, Bay Sweetwater's brings to us a love story where a sand castle is swept away and returned on the tide, Talia Sunsong unmasks a wonder with Masks of Life, while Giannis Piaggio brings to us a curious tale, with The Lake.

Do note that 'Gift from the Gods' can also be used now to meet the entry requirements.

These machinima are now part of the L$1.1 Million, MachinimUWA VI: REFLECTIONS, the 6th UWA Short Animated Film Challenge. The theme for MachinimUWA VI is a tribute to the Centenary of the University of Western Australia. Entries for MachinimUWA VI: REFLECTIONS may consist of any storyline that fits the theme of 'REFLECTIONS.' At least ONE of the 3 'Spaces of Reflection' on UWA's SL SIMS (the Sunken Gardens, the Somerville Auditorium or the Reflection Pond) must be clearly shown in the story.

Special prizes are also offered for machinima that best portray one or a few of the artworks entered in UWA Centenary 3D Art Challenge: REFLECTIONS

We are happy to announce the 6th Machinima Challenge put forth by the University of Western Australia (UWA). The theme is 'Reflections'. Sponsored by the Parramatta City Council, MetaHarpers (Arhenn Oberlander), AviewTV, Freemason Magic & UWA the prize pool sits at L$1,100,000 (approx USD 4,500). We hope you are inspired by this to create many wondrous works as you have been through the years! (Please note the major rule & special prize guidelines as well as the Audience Participation Prizes for watching the machinima)

WHAT: MachinimUWA VI : Reflections

WHEN: Entries Close at Midnight SLT 30th June 2013. Winner will be announced in August 2013

THEME:
The theme is 'REFLECTIONS'. Reflections in a pool of water... Reflections of light... Reflecting on the grandeur of the universe... Reflections of art.... An Inner Reflection.....Reflecting on opportuinities lost, or siezed... How 'Reflections' is interpreted is exactly like how beauty is interpreted.... in the eyes of the beholder... or in this case, the eyes and lens of the machinimatographer.

WHY THIS THEME?
This theme was chosen in conjunction with the 2013 UWA Centenary, as she reflects on 100 years of existence and ponders the question of what the next 100 years will bring.

MAJOR RULE:
You machinima can be about any type of 'Reflections' you may wish to portray. There is only one requirement to make this a valid entry. At least one of the 3 major spaces of Reflection at UWA needs to be included in your storyline (The Reflection Pond, The Sunken Gardens, The Somerville Auditorium - LM's provided below). You may choose to film in any other area of the campus if you so wish or you could include all 3 locations, but the rule is you need to select at least ONE. You may use props at the location, or maybe want to change the footage later during the post process, this is up to you... as long as one of the 3 spaces you choose to be part of your Machinima can be recognized and form part of your storyline. Addendum: Or, you could choose to include Robin Yakinthou's 'Gift from the Gods' instead of one of those 3 spaces.

PRIZES:
There is a prize pool of L$1 Million, with a L$200,000 top prize, and 12 prizes in all. There will be a top 10, as well as 2 special prizes. All winners will also receive a special RL UWA package. The UWA Centenary Prize of L$50,000 will also be awarded to the Machinima that best captures the essence of 100 years of reflections on education. The UWA Art of the Artists Prize of L$50,000 will be awarded to the Machinima that best incorporates one or a number of the artworks that have been submitted to the UWA Centenary 3D Art Challenge. Second Life Founder’s New Virtual World Uses Body-Tracking Hardware

Hardware that tracks your head, eyes, and hands will make the follow up to Second Life very different from the pioneering virtual world.

The founder of the once-popular virtual world Second Life, Philip Rosedale, is working on a new 3-D digital world that looks like it will be operated using gestures and body-tracking hardware. Rosedale declined to talk about his new company, called High Fidelity, just yet. But videos and other material posted online by the company suggest it is working on an impressively immersive virtual-reality experience where you control an avatar using head and hand movements.
In the YouTube video embedded below, a crude avatar copies the head movements of someone at High Fidelity wearing spectacles with an exposed circuit board attached. A simple but workable animation even mirrors the man’s speech with the avatar’s own mouth. (The text being read is from Snow Crash, a Neal Stephenson novel that features a virtual world called the Metaverse and popularized the term”avatar.”)
Rosedale this week tweeted a photo of headphones with similar exposed electronics that he described as “head gyros,” presumably referring to gyroscopes used to detect rotation.
This ad asking for contractors states that High Fidelity even has a Google Glass app to allow head motion to “move the avatar head and/or joints,” and this video shows that they also have code that enables a smartphone to be used like a Wii controller to take control of a character in a virtual world.
Another want ad asks for help using Leap Motion’s camera-based gesture controller “for controlling the motion of the avatar.” A similar ad asks for a small circuit board that could be mounted to spectacles to bounce infrared light off a person’s eyeball and detect the reflection, a method used in eye-tracking systems. That could offer a way to use your gaze to control that of your avatar.
The High Fidelity website offers few clues as to how all this will come together, summing up what the company is doing like this:

“We’re building a new virtual world enabling rich avatar interactions driven by sensor-equipped hardware, simulated and served by devices (phones, tablets and laptops/desktops) contributed by end-users.”

That suggests that using the world won’t involve connecting to a central server, as did Second Life. Instead software on the computers of the people that want to use the world will create and run the world. That sounds challenging to coordinate, but the High Fidelity site also suggests that you might earn “virtual world currency in exchange from helping to power the grid,” implying that there may be incentives to leave your computer working on the simulation even when you’re not actively using it.
As for what the final result will be like, the best decription on High Fidelity’s site is this:

“We think richly rendered avatars capturing head movements, eye movements, and body language offer much more compelling person-to-person interaction possibilities that the poorly-lit, awkwardly-framed facsimiles of ourselves we share through videoconferencing today.”

What little can be seen of the company’s work so far suggests that it could be some time until that vision is complete. However, Rosedale is known to have the backing of investors including Google Ventures and Mitch Kapor, and it may be hiding its real progress.

But the virtual world is more about fun than it is about commerce for him, says Abramelin: "Second Life is about other people's creativity. Some of it is beautiful. Abramelin's hectic work schedule includes expanding the business to encompass services for the emerging Scottish video game industry, but he always finds time to take long flights over the vast virtual mainland to marvel at user-created chaos and beauty. He moved all his Second Life Linden dollars into bitcoin

With all the chatter lately about bitcoin’s surge in value, I figured it was time to try it out for myself. But rather than setting up a “mining” operation to create new bitcoins or investing US dollars, I realized I could transfer some money from one virtual currency into another.
As an early user of the virtual world Second Life, I had amassed a few thousand Linden dollars, which is the currency used for transactions within the game. Second Life used to pay basic users a stipend of L$50 a week simply for logging in. Not having used it in years, I was pleasantly surprised to find over L$5,000 Linden dollars sitting in my account, just waiting to be converted into bitcoins.
I started the day with L$5,203 in my Second Life account, which is worth about US$20. To move my money, I created an account at VirWoX, a virtual currency exchange originally created to exchange Linden dollars for real-word, government-issued money. You can trade US dollars, euros, pounds, and Swiss francs into and out of Linden dollars, Avination (used in a virtual world of the same name), and Open Metaverse Currency (used in several virtual worlds). You can also now exchange between Linden dollars and bitcoin.
In order to initiate the transfer, I had to visit one of VirWoX’s terminals inside Second Life, where I deposited L$5,195. That’s me in the image above, with what appears to be some sort of cat behind me. The terminal works kind of like an ATM, except that instead of punching in a PIN, the terminal showed me a PIN I created in VirWoX, to prove that it was legitimate and not some rogue ATM trying to rip me off.
Having transferred the funds into my VirWoX account, I needed to convert them into bitcoins, which means dealing with exchange rates. Even though I work in an office filled with financial journalists, not everything sinks in, and I managed to commit a rookie mistake of buying in with the market price of bitcoins at an all-time high. I executed a trade at an exchange rate of about 49,000 Linden dollars for 1 bitcoin. VirWoX took a commission of L$50 plus 2.9% of the transaction. After a nearly instantaneous trade, I was the proud owner of one-tenth of a bitcoin, worth about US$18 at the time of trade.
The final step was simply to get the money out of my VirWoX account and into a bitcoin “wallet,” a secure address that acts as my public identity on the bitcoin network. This turned out to be, by far, the most time-consuming step. After downloading the recommended bitcoin client, I needed to wait about five hours for it sync with the network. Once that was done, I initiated a transfer from my VirWoX account to my newly created bitcoin wallet. VirWoX charged a fee of one-hundredth of a bitcoin to make the transfer.
That left me with a grand total of BTC 0.09, worth about US$18.20 at the time of this writing. Or at least that’s what I hope. After clicking to transfer the funds, I got a somewhat cryptic response saying my withdrawal now requires a “manual step” by VirWoX that can take up to 48 hours to complete.
As I wait for my bitcoin client to synchronize with the network, this is the perfect time to see how much my time is actually worth. And what better way then by running an ever-so-slightly absurd Tesla cost-of-ownership calculator in reverse? Assuming my final transfer eventually completes, my time is apparently worth around US$3.44 per hour, or roughly BTC 0.018 an hour.
I think I’ll stick with software development and leave the investing to the professionals.
