Wisdom, Worth, Witness (July 26, 2026: 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time / World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly)

My dear brothers and sisters, today is a beautiful and remarkably rich Sunday in our Church calendar. We are celebrating the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, but today, July 26, also marks two very significant and deeply personal observances for us: the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly, and Fil-Mission Sunday. At first glance, you might wonder, how do grandparents, Filipino missionaries, and today's scriptural readings all connect? But if we look closely at the Word of God today, we will find a beautiful thread that sews them all together.

To help us unpack this, I want us to reflect on three simple words that start with the letter "W". They are Wisdom, Worth, and Witness.

Let’s start with our first word: Wisdom. In our First Reading from the First Book of Kings, God appears to a young King Solomon in a dream and essentially gives him a blank check. God says, "Ask something of me, and I will give it to you." Imagine if God asked you that tonight. Many of us would instinctively ask for a winning lottery ticket, a promotion at work, a new house, or perhaps physical healing. But what does Solomon ask for? He asks for an "understanding heart"—he asks for the wisdom to know right from wrong, to govern God's people well. He doesn't ask for a long life or overflowing riches. And because he asked for wisdom, God was pleased and gave him exactly that.

This brings us to our beloved grandparents and the elderly whom we honor today. My memories of my grandparents are still vivid in my mind. I grew up with my lola and lolo. Im a lola and lolo's boy. Both of them are educators. My Grandma was a primary teacher, and my Grandpa was a professor at UP Los Baños. That's why at the age of 5, I already memorized the positions of the planets and constellations, the scientific names of the plants and animals, etc. Now I don't remember anything. I used to have a brilliant mind because of them. And most of all, I will never forget that I am always nakukurot sa singit because of my naughtiness in the church. My grandma loves to sit on the front row of the church. Kaya....

When we are young, we often equate a successful life with accumulation—more money, more titles, more achievements, more followers on social media. But sit down with a Lolo or a Lola. Talk to them about what really matters. You will quickly find that they are the living embodiment of Solomon’s choice. They have lived long enough to realize that the latest gadgets or the fanciest cars are not the true treasures of life. When a person reaches the twilight of their years, they don't ask to look at their bank accounts or their college diplomas. They ask to hold the hands of their children and grandchildren. They ask for the sacraments. They know what lasts. That is true Wisdom. And as a society and a Church, we need to sit at their feet and listen to them.

This leads us to our second word: Worth. What is the true value of the things we pursue? In our Gospel today from Matthew chapter 13, Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, or a pearl of great price. When a merchant finds that one magnificent pearl, he goes and sells absolutely everything he has with joy, just to buy it. He didn't feel shortchanged. He didn't feel deprived. The merchant gladly let go of his lesser possessions because he knew the supreme worth of that single pearl.

This is exactly where Fil-Mission Sunday comes in. What makes a young Filipino man or woman leave the comfort of our country, say goodbye to their tight-knit family, and travel to a foreign land with a different language, a different climate, and sometimes a hostile environment? It is because they have found the pearl of great price. They have realized the infinite worth of the Gospel, and they are willing to "sell everything"—to give up their comfort and security—to share this treasure with the world.

And let us not forget our millions of OFWs—our Overseas Filipino Workers. Pope Francis once beautifully called Filipinos the "smugglers of faith." Many of our OFWs go abroad out of economic necessity, but wherever they go, they bring their rosaries, their devotion to the Sto. Niño, and their deep love for the Holy Mass. They fill the empty churches in Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. They are our modern-day missionaries. They know that no matter how much they earn abroad to provide for their families, their true worth is rooted in their relationship with Christ. Like the Psalmist says in our Responsorial Psalm today, "I love your commands more than gold, however fine."

Our third and final word is Witness. In our Second Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans, chapter 8, Paul gives us one of the most comforting verses in all of Scripture. He writes: "We know that all things work for good for those who love God."

It is very easy to believe this verse when life is going our way. But what about when tragedy strikes? What about when we lose a job, when a loved one suddenly passes away, or when a family faces extreme poverty? How can that possibly work for good? This is exactly where we need the Witness of both our elderly and our missionaries.

Our grandparents have lived through wars, natural disasters, economic crises, personal heartbreaks, and loss. Yet, here they are, sitting in the pews beside us with their rosaries, still praising God. They are our living witnesses that God is faithful. They can look back at the long tapestry of their lives and say, "Yes, there were dark threads of sorrow and pain, but God wove them into a beautiful picture of grace. All things truly do work for good."

Likewise, our missionaries are witnesses of hope. They endure loneliness, rejection, and exhaustion, yet they radiate joy because they know they are, as St. Paul says, "predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son." Their very lives are a testimony that the Kingdom of Heaven is real and worth everything.

My dear friends, today, look at the elderly in your families and in our parish. Don't just see them as people who need care; see them as the bearers of Wisdom who can teach you the true Worth of life, and who serve as a Witness to God’s enduring love. And as we celebrate Fil-Mission Sunday, let us support our Filipino missionaries not just financially, but with our fervent prayers.

Most importantly, let us look inward and ask ourselves: Have I found my pearl of great price? Am I willing to let go of the temporary, shallow things of this world to fully possess the Kingdom of Heaven? Let us ask the Lord today for an understanding heart, just like Solomon. May we have the Wisdom to recognize the Kingdom, the courage to give everything for its Worth, and the grace to be its faithful Witness to the ends of the earth. Amen.

Presence, Patience, Process (16th Sunday in Ordinary Time)

My dear brothers and sisters,

Have you ever looked at the world around you—or maybe even just looked at your own life—and felt a sudden, overwhelming urge to just start ripping things out?

Kagabi while I was preparing this homily, I realized that mukha ata nagpapaalala si Bosing sa akin. Because these past few days I'd been grumpy and impatient most of the time. Pero sabi ko, no problem coz for sure those who will come today at Mass, some of them are also impatient and malas nila they have come particularly at this moment that I am presiding. 😉

We see a world fractured by division, injustice, and everyday unkindness. We look at our communities, our workplaces, and sometimes even our own families, and we see things that frustrate us. We see the "weeds." And if we are completely honest with ourselves, when we look deep into our own hearts, we find a messy mixture there too. We find beautiful moments of generosity, love, and faith—our wheat. But right next to it, we find patches of selfishness, resentment, and impatience—our weeds.

Our human instinct, just like the servants in today’s Gospel, is to react immediately. "Master, do you want us to go and pull them up?" We want instant judgment. We want a clean field right now. We want to fix everything immediately, cut off the people who hurt us, and purge every flaw with a heavy hand.

But God’s ways are beautifully, frustratingly, and savingly different from ours. Today, the Liturgy invites us to step back and look at how God deals with the messiness of our lives through three simple words: Presence, Patience, and Process.

First, let us look at God’s Presence.

The Gospel tells us that the field is the world, and the good seed represents the children of the Kingdom. Notice that the Master does not abandon the field just because an enemy sneaked in and sowed weeds. He stays. He remains active, attentive, and deeply invested in the growth of the wheat.

In our second reading, Saint Paul reminds us of a beautiful reality about God's presence in our everyday mess: "The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought."

When you are overwhelmed by the imperfections of your life, when you feel like your worries are choking out your faith, God does not stand at a distance waiting for you to get your life perfectly sorted out before He shows up. He is present right now, groaning with us, breathing grace into our weakness, and sustaining us when we don't even have the words to ask for help.

QUESTION: How often do we fail to recognize His presence because we are too busy staring at the weeds around us?

This leads us directly to the second word: God’s Patience.

Our first reading from the Book of Wisdom says something profound: "But though you are master of might, you judge with clemency, and with much lenience you govern us." Think about that. Human power usually wants to show off by executing immediate force. If someone offends us, we want instant vindication. But God, who holds absolute power over the universe, shows His strength through leniency.

When the servants demand to rip out the weeds, the Master stops them: "No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest."

Why? Because God is patient. God is not in a rush to condemn. He knows that in the spiritual life, something miraculous can happen that can never happen in botany: a weed can turn into wheat. A sinner can become a saint. Matthew was a tax collector; he became an Apostle. Paul was a persecutor; he became the great missionary of grace. I WAS A SINNER...AND IM STILL A SINNER NOW....HAHAHAHA

If God had an executioner’s clock instead of a Father’s heart, where would you and I be today? How many times has God looked at the weeds in our lives and said, "Wait. Give them time. Let them grow. My grace is still working on them"?

PERO TAYO WAGAS KUNG MAKASABING TUMBAHIN NA YAN, TANGALIN NA YAN, PALITAN NA YAN. WE DON'T WANT TO GROW THROUGH CHALLENGES. WE WANT TO GROW IN AN EASY WAY. KUNG PWEDE PA NGA MAGSHORTCUT E. BY GETTING RID OF THOSE SAGABAL SA ATING BUHAY.

And that brings us to our final word: Process.

Growth takes time. The Kingdom of Heaven, Jesus says, is like a tiny mustard seed that slowly becomes a large bush. It is like yeast that slowly, invisibly ferments a whole batch of dough.

True transformation is an organic, sometimes slow, and often quiet process. We live in a world of instant gratification—instant downloads, fast food, overnight success. But holiness does not happen in an instant. It is a daily process of choosing love over bitterness, forgiveness over retaliation, and trust over anxiety.

God allows the wheat and the weeds to live together because the very struggle of growing alongside the weeds is what tests, strengthens, and matures the wheat. It forces us to rely less on our own strength and more on the grace of the Holy Spirit.

My dear friends, as we prepare to receive the Eucharist today, let us carry these truths into our lives. Let us stop trying to violently pull up everyone else's weeds, and instead focus on nurturing the good seed God has placed within us.

Let us sit quietly with a few reflective questions:

Where am I being called to show the same patience to others—and to myself—that God continuously shows to me?

Am I letting the "weeds" of worry, anger, or judgment consume my energy, or am I focusing on growing the good "wheat" of kindness and faith?

Can I trust the slow process of God's grace working in my life, even when I cannot see immediate results?

Let us pray for the grace to accept that we are a work in progress, held firmly in the loving Presence, protected by the infinite Patience, and transformed by the gentle Process of a God who refuses to give up on us.

Amen.

Patak, Puso, Pagsibol (Hulyo 12, 2026: Ika-15 Linggo sa Karaniwang Panahon)

Mga kapatid, magandang umaga sa inyong lahat dito sa Quezon Memorial Circle! Kahit madilim ang langit, bumubuhos ang ulan, at tila mas kakaunti tayo ngayon, maging panatag ang ating mga kalooban dahil buhay ang Diyos sa gitna natin.

Ang mga pagbasa natin ngayong Ikalabinlimang Linggo sa Karaniwang Panahon—ay may iisang magandang tagpo: ang pagbuhos ng biyaya at ang kahandaan ng lupa. Sa unang pagbasa, sinabi ng Panginoon na kung paanong ang ulan at niyebe ay pumapatak mula sa langit at hindi bumabalik nang hindi dinidilig, gayon din ang Kanyang Salita. Sa Ebanghelyo naman, narinig natin ang Talinghaga ng Manghahasik kung saan ang binhi ay nangangailangan ng matabang lupa upang mamunga. Napakalinaw ng koneksyon: ang ulan at ang binhi ay mga regalo ng Diyos na naghahanap ng ating tugon.

Upang mas malalim nating mabalangkas ang mensaheng ito sa ating buhay ngayon, gagamitin natin ang tatlong salita na nagsisimula sa letrang P: Patak, Puso, at Pagsibol.

Ang unang salita ay Patak. Tingnan ninyo ang paligid natin dito sa Circle. Bago magsimula ang Misa, maaaring ang ilan sa atin ay nag-alinlangan kung tutuloy dahil sa lakas ng ulan. Naalala ko tuloy ang isang kuwento tungkol sa isang matandang magsasaka. May matinding tagtuyot sa kanilang bayan, kaya nagpatawag ang kura paroko ng isang pagtitipon para manalangin na umulan. Libo-libong tao ang dumating sa plasa. Ngunit sa lahat ng libu-libong iyon, isang maliit na batang babae lang ang nagdala ng payong. Bakit? Dahil siya lang ang may buong pananalig na kapag nanalangin sila, may papatak na ulan mula sa langit. Ang ulan na nararanasan natin ngayon ay hindi sagabal; ito ay paalala ng Salita ng Diyos. Ang bawat patak ng ulan ay patunay na patuloy na nagdidilig ang Panginoon sa tuyong lupain ng ating buhay. Ang Kanyang Salita ay hindi nauuwi sa wala; tuwing naririnig natin ito, may layunin Siya sa bawat patak nito sa ating kasaysayan.

Dito pumapasok ang ikalawang salita: Puso. Sa Ebanghelyo, ang apat na uri ng lupa ay kumakatawan sa kalagayan ng ating mga puso. May pusong parang daanan na matigas, may mababaw, may natatakpan ng mga tinik ng alalahanin sa buhay, at may mataba. Sa araw na ito na maulan at kakaunti ang tao, madaling isipin na baka mas mabilis na matapos ang Misa at makauwi na agad. Ngunit ang paanyaya sa atin ay buksan ang ating puso. Sabi nga ni San Pablo sa ikalawang pagbasa, ang mga pagtitiis sa kasalukuyang panahon ay walang-wala kumpara sa kaluwalhatiang ihahayag sa atin. Kahit basang-basa ang sapatos natin o nilalamig tayo ngayon, ano ang kalagayan ng lupa ng iyong puso? Hinahayaan mo bang magbabad ang Salita ng Diyos sa lalim ng iyong pagkatao, o hinahayaan mong tangayin ito ng lamig ng panahon?

Ang huling salita ay Pagsibol. Ang layunin ng patak ng ulan at ang pagiging mataba ng puso ay upang magkaroon ng pagsibol at bunga. Ang tagumpay ng misyon ng Diyos ay hindi nasusukat sa dami ng taong nakaupo sa mga bench dito sa Quezon Memorial Circle ngayon. Nasusukat ito sa kalidad ng pagsibol ng pananampalataya sa mga natitira rito. Kung ikaw na nakatayo ngayon sa ilalim ng payong ay uuwi na may higit na pagmamahal sa iyong pamilya, may mas malalim na pasensya sa iyong kapwa, at may matatag na pag-asa sa kabila ng mga bagyo ng buhay, doon ay sumisibol ang Kaharian ng Diyos.

Mga kapatid, habang tinatapos natin ang pagninilay na ito, hayaan nating ang bawat Patak ng ulan ay magpaalala sa atin ng walang-hanggang tapat na Salita ng Diyos. Ihanda natin ang ating Puso bilang matabang lupa. At nawa, sa ating pag-alis sa lugar na ito, bitbit natin ang isang magandang Pagsibol ng pananampalataya na magiging kanlungan at inspirasyon para sa iba. Tuloy ang pagdiriwang, tuloy ang biyaya, dahil ang pag-ibig ng Diyos ay hindi natutunaw sa ulan. Amen.

Consecration. Consistency. Collaboration (Wedding of Archie and Sarah)

Archie at Sarah, sa wakas, nandito na tayo. Matapos ang sampung taon ng pagsasama, ng pagbuo ng mga pangarap, at ng pag-aalaga sa inyong anak, dumating na ang araw na itinakda ng Panginoon para basbasan ang inyong pagmamahalan.

Sa Claretian Communications Foundation, kilalang-kilala natin si Archie bilang isang mahusay, masipag, at talagang innovative na Account Executive sa Area Sales Department. Sa trabaho, kapag may target si Archie, hindi lang niya basta inaabot—gumagawa siya ng bagong diskarte para masigurong maging matagumpay ang benta. He knows how to pitch, how to negotiate, and how to close a deal.

But today, Archie and Sarah, this is not just about closing a deal or formalizing what you already have. Sampung taon na kayong naglalakbay nang magkasama. Alam ninyo na ang ugali ng isa't isa, ang hilatsa ng mukha kapag stressed, at ang saya ng pagiging magulang sa inyong anak. Kaya ang kasal na ito ay hindi simula ng isang blangkong pahina, kundi ang pagpapakabanal ng isang napakagandang kwento na matagal niyo nang isinusulat.

Para sa inyong dalawa, lalo na sa pagpasok ninyo sa bagong yugtong ito ng sacramental grace, I want you to anchor your next decades on three simple words that start with the letter C.

1. Consecration (Paghahandog)
Sa Sales, Archie, kapag ang isang account o kliyente ay matagal na sa atin, may tendensya na ma-secure tayo at makalimutan ang kahalagahan ng ugnayan. Sa inyong pagsasama ni Sarah sa loob ng sampung taon, marami na kayong pinagdaanan. Subalit ngayong araw, ang inyong kasaysayan ay binibigyan ng bagong kahulugan sa pamamagitan ng Consecration—ipinagkakatiwala at inihahandog ninyo ang inyong relasyon at ang inyong pamilya sa Diyos.

Hindi na lang kayo basta magkasama sa ilalim ng isang bubong; kayo ngayon ay magkasama sa loob ng grasya ng Sakramento. Ang inyong tahanan, kasama ang inyong anak, ay opisyal nang nagiging isang Domestic Church—isang munting simbahan kung saan si Kristo ang sentro at sandigan sa bawat hamon ng buhay.

2. Consistency (Katatagan)
Archie, nakikita namin ang dedikasyon mo sa Area Sales—pumupunta sa kung saan-saang lugar, hinaharap ang iba't ibang klaseng kliyente, at palaging nariyan ang consistency sa pagtatrabaho kaya nagiging matagumpay.

Ang sampung taon ninyong magkasama ay patunay na ng inyong consistency sa pag-ibig. Napatunayan niyo nang kaya ninyong magtiis, magpatawad, at magsikap para sa isa't isa at para sa inyong anak. Ngayong may basbas na ng Simbahan, ang hamon ay ipagpatuloy ang katapatang ito nang may mas malalim na inspirasyon. True love is a daily decision. Ito ang paulit-ulit na pagpili kay Sarah tuwing umaga, at ang paulit-ulit na pag-alaga ni Sarah kay Archie, kasama ang paggabay sa inyong anak patungo sa tamang landas.

3. Collaboration (Pagtutulungan)

Dahil ikaw ay kilalang innovative, Archie, baka minsan masanay ka na ikaw lang ang nag-iisip ng diskarte sa field. Ngunit sa buhay pamilya, matagal niyo nang napatunayan na mas malakas kayo kapag magkatuwang. Mas lalo pa ngayon.

Ang pagpapalaki sa inyong anak at ang pagharap sa susunod na mga taon ay nangangailangan ng tapat at mas pinagtibay na collaboration. You are a team. Sarah is your co-executive in this life journey. Mag-usap kayo, makinig sa isa’t isa, at magtiwala sa kakayahan ng bawat isa. Ang lakas ni Archie ay pupuno sa kahinaan ni Sarah, at ang galing ni Sarah ang magiging gabay sa mga desisyon ni Archie, lalo na para sa kinabukasan ng inyong anak.

Isang Paalala mula sa CCFI Family:

Archie at Sarah, ang sampung taon ninyong paghihintay at pagsasama ay nagbunga na ngayon ng isang banal na tipan. Ang inyong anak ay saksi sa pagmamahalang ito na pinagtibay ng sakramento. Ang buong pamilya ng Claretian ay nagdarasal at nagagalak para sa inyong pamilya.

Archie, marami ka nang na-hit na sales targets, ngunit ngayon, kasama si Sarah at ang inyong anak, naabot mo ang pinakamahalagang milestone ng iyong buhay: ang basbas ng Diyos sa inyong pamilya.

Huwag kalilimutan ang tatlong C: Ang Consecration ng inyong puso sa Diyos, ang Consistency ng inyong pagmamahalan, at ang walang sawang Collaboration bilang isang pamilya.

Helplessness, Healing, Harvest (11th Sunday in Ordinary Time - 11am Mass)

A few years ago, in a quiet suburban neighborhood, lived an elderly man named Arthur. After his wife of fifty years passed away, Arthur slowly retreated from the world. He stopped going out, stopped checking his mail, and over the course of a year, his once-immaculate house fell into visible disrepair. The paint was peeling, the gutters were overflowing, and the front yard became a jungle of weeds. Neighbors would drive by, shake their heads, and murmur about how sad it was, but everyone assumed someone else was handling it. Arthur was completely overwhelmed, paralyzed by grief, and too proud to ask for help. He was drowning in plain sight.

Then, early one Saturday morning, Arthur woke up to the sound of machinery. He peeked out his window to see a dozen of his neighbors in his front yard. They hadn't called or asked for a committee meeting. They just showed up with lawnmowers, weed whackers, paintbrushes, and trash bags. When Arthur opened the front door, tears streaming down his face, the neighbor leading the group simply smiled, handed him a cup of hot coffee, and said, "We know it’s been hard. We’re just here to help carry the load today." They didn't judge the mess. They just rolled up their sleeves and stepped right into it.

That beautiful, spontaneous act of stepping into someone else's mess is a perfect image of the divine love revealed in our Mass readings for this Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. Throughout the scriptures today—from Exodus and Psalm 100 to Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans and the Gospel of Matthew—we see a God who refuses to stand on the sidelines of our suffering. To understand the interconnectedness of these powerful texts and how they apply to our ordinary lives, let us look at three words that form the foundation of our reflection: Helplessness, Healing, and Harvest.

Our first word is Helplessness. In our second reading, Saint Paul writes to the Romans with absolute clarity, stating that Christ died for us while we were still helpless. He didn't wait for humanity to pull itself together by its bootstraps. In the Gospel of Matthew, we see this exact same reality through the eyes of Jesus. When He looks at the crowds, His heart is moved with pity because they are troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus sees the spiritual and emotional weeds choking the people. Just like Arthur sitting alone in his deteriorating house, humanity was stuck in a condition of profound helplessness. The beautiful theological truth here is that God does not demand perfection as a prerequisite for His love. He meets us right in the middle of our overgrown, chaotic, and broken reality.

This divine intervention brings us to our second word: Healing. God’s response to our helplessness is never a lecture; it is always an active, restorative grace. In our first reading from Exodus, God speaks to the Israelites, a people who had been trapped in the helpless misery of slavery. He tells Moses to remind them, "I bore you up on eagle wings and brought you to myself." He actively lifts them out of their despair and heals their fractured identity, calling them to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. In the Gospel, Jesus brings this healing directly to the people. But He doesn't do it alone. He summons His twelve disciples, ordinary and flawed men, and shares His own authority with them. He empowers them to cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, and drive out demons. The healing of God is not distant or theoretical. It is tangible, deeply personal, and it completely restores our dignity.

Which leads us to our final word: Harvest. The healing God provides is never meant to stop with us. It is meant to propel us outward. After empowering His disciples, Jesus looks at them and says, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few." He then sends them out into that harvest with a strict and beautiful instruction: "Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give." Jesus is telling us that the very purpose of our rescue is so that we can become rescuers. We who have been carried on eagle wings, we who have been loved while we were still sinners, are now commissioned to be the laborers. God calls us out of our isolation and sends us into the fields of the world to bring His compassion to others.

My dear friends, the Gospel challenges us to put these truths into concrete action for our Christian living.

First, I challenge you to be deeply honest with God about your own areas of helplessness. We all have parts of our lives—a struggling relationship, a hidden addiction, a quiet grief, or a lingering fear—where the weeds have grown too tall to manage alone. Do not let pride keep you isolated behind closed doors. Bring that mess to the altar today and allow the healing grace of Christ to meet you exactly where you are.
Second, I challenge you to fully embrace your identity as a laborer in God’s harvest. Recognize that you do not need a theology degree or a perfect track record to be used by God. Jesus chose tax collectors and fishermen to change the world. He is choosing you today to be a kingdom of priests in your own homes, schools, and workplaces.

Finally, I challenge you to look for the "Arthurs" in your own life this week. Who is drowning in plain sight? Who is carrying a load that is simply too heavy for one person? In our first reading from Exodus, God tells Moses to remind the Israelites of their history. They were slaves in Egypt, trapped in the ultimate mess, but God says, "I bore you up on eagle wings and brought you to myself." He rescues them and then elevates them, calling them His special possession, a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. In the Gospel, Jesus demonstrates this same active mercy. Recognizing the desperate state of the crowds, He doesn't just offer empty words of comfort. He calls His twelve disciples to Himself and shares His own divine authority with them. He takes ordinary, flawed men—fishermen, a tax collector, zealots—and equips them to bring healing to the brokenness. God’s mercy always transforms our identity. He takes us from being lost sheep to being His chosen, beloved people.

Which leads us to our final word: Mission. God never pours out His mercy just to make us feel comfortable. He heals us so that He can send us. Jesus gives His newly empowered disciples a clear and urgent directive. He tells them to go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. He commands them to cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, and drive out demons. And He gives them the ultimate rule for their journey: "Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give." This is the heartbeat of the Christian life. The mercy we have experienced in the midst of our own mess is not something we get to keep locked away in a safe. It is the very fuel for our mission in the world. We are called to be the laborers in a harvest that is abundant, stepping into the messy lives of others with the exact same grace we have been given.

As we prepare to leave the quiet of this sanctuary and head back into the noise of our week, the Gospel presents us with some very real challenges for our Christian living.

First, I challenge you to look for the "why" behind the difficult people in your life. When a coworker is irritable, when a family member is distant, or when a stranger is rude, resist the urge to immediately judge or react. Ask God for the grace to see them as sheep without a shepherd. Look past the frustrating surface and try to recognize the hidden burdens they might be carrying.

Second, I challenge you to invite God into your own helplessness. Stop trying to clean up your mess before you ask for His help. Remember the words of Saint Paul today: God proves His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Bring your exhaustion, your failures, and your fears to Him exactly as they are, and allow His mercy to bear you up on eagle wings.

Finally, I challenge you to actively engage in your mission. Look around your neighborhood, your workplace, and your own home. Who needs to experience the free, unmerited love of Christ this week? You are part of a holy nation, an empowered people. Give generously of your time, offer a word of profound encouragement, and freely share the grace that has so freely been given to you.

We are a people rescued from the mess, transformed by mercy, and sent on a mission. May we have the courage to live out that calling every single day. Amen.

In the first reading from Exodus, God tells Moses to remind the Israelites of how He bore them up on eagle wings to bring them to Himself. He rescued them from slavery, and then He gave them a new identity, declaring that they shall be to Him a kingdom of priests, a holy nation. They are called out of the mess to belong completely to Him. We see the exact same pattern in the Gospel. Jesus, moved by the people's immense need, turns to His disciples. He doesn't just ask them to pray for laborers; He calls them to be the laborers. He summons His twelve disciples by name—Peter, Andrew, James, John, and even Matthew the tax collector, a man who knew a thing or two about being viewed as an outcast. Jesus calls ordinary, flawed people to share in His extraordinary work. He calls you, and He calls me. We are the sheep of His flock, as Psalm 100 reminds us, but we are also called to be the shepherds for others.

Which brings us to our final word: Commission. Jesus does not call the disciples to remain comfortably on the sidelines with Him. He sends them out into the world. So, brothers and sisters, what does this mean for our ordinary lives today? The Gospel is not just a historical account; it is a living challenge for our Christian living this week.

First, I challenge you to look around you with the eyes of Christ. Who in your family, your workplace, or your neighborhood looks like a sheep without a shepherd? Who is troubled, abandoned, or simply overwhelmed by the demands of life? Notice them. Do not rush past them in the rain.

Second, I challenge you to remember that you do not need to be perfect to be called. Just as Jesus chose tax collectors and fishermen, He chooses you. Your past mistakes, your present struggles, and your moments of helplessness do not disqualify you from God's service. They are the very places where His grace is most visible.

And finally, I challenge you to give freely what you have freely received. You may not be asked to literally raise the dead this week, but you can certainly raise someone's spirits. You can offer forgiveness where it is undeserved. You can sit with someone who is grieving. You can be the person who stops in the crowded parking lot to help a stranger gather the broken pieces of their day.

We are a kingdom of priests. We are the laborers in His abundant harvest. May we have the courage to let His compassion move our hearts, to embrace our holy calling, and to live out our commission in the world today. Amen.

From this rootedness, we receive our ultimate assurance. The closing words of Jude offer a beautiful, soaring doxology: praise to the One who is able to keep us from stumbling and present us unblemished and exultant in the presence of His glory. We do not walk this path by our own fragile strength. Today, let us stop looking to the world for permission or approval to live out our faith. Let us trust completely in the supreme authority of Christ, who guides our steps and sustains our souls forever. Amen.

As the end of all things draws near, our spiritual life cannot afford to be casual. We are called to let our love for one another be intense, using whatever unique gifts we have received to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace. True prayer fuels an active, working charity that covers a multitude of sins.

Finally, this authentic faith must manifest as a forgiving heart. Jesus makes it clear that our prayer and our power to move mountains are directly tied to how we treat those who have wronged us. This is how we truly enter the reign of God. We do not reign by climbing over others or demanding recognition. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, good morning.

If you were to walk into a room and find the doors bolted shut, the windows locked, and the people inside holding their breath in absolute silence, what would you assume? You’d assume they were hiding from danger. You’d feel the heavy, suffocating weight of fear in the air.

That is exactly where the Gospel finds the disciples today. It’s evening on Easter Sunday. The tomb is empty, rumors are flying, but the doors are locked. They are paralyzed. They are trapped in the prison of their own anxiety, mourning their past failures, and terrified of what tomorrow might bring.

I think if we are completely honest with ourselves, every single one of us has spent some time in that locked room.

Maybe your locked room isn't a physical place. Maybe it’s a relationship that has gone completely cold, where you’ve stopped talking and started avoiding each other. Maybe your locked room is a secret struggle with addiction, anxiety, or a financial burden that you are carrying entirely alone because you’re too proud or too scared to ask for help. We lock the doors because we think it keeps us safe, but all it really does is keep us isolated.

But look at what happens. Jesus doesn't knock. He doesn't wait for them to get their act together or find their courage. He steps right through the locked doors of their fear, stands in their midst, and says, "Peace be with you."

And then, he does something extraordinary. He breathes on them.

This brings us to our very first word today: Breath.

When Jesus breathes on the disciples, he isn't just making a symbolic gesture. He is performing a spiritual act of resuscitation. Think about the book of Genesis, when God formed humanity out of the dust of the earth. The body was there, but it was lifeless until God breathed His own breath into its nostrils, and the human being came alive.

On Pentecost, Jesus looks at a dying, terrified group of followers and gives them a second creation. He gives them a lungful of divine life. The Holy Spirit is the very breath of God. When you feel like you are suffocating under the pressures of life, when you feel like you have nothing left to give, Pentecost reminds us that we do not live on our own power. We live on the borrowed breath of God.

A few years ago, a story emerged from a crowded city hospital about an elderly man who was admitted with a severe respiratory illness. He spent two weeks on a ventilator, fighting for every single breath. When he was finally recovered and ready to be discharged, the nurse handed him the hospital bill. The old man looked at the total cost of the oxygen and the ventilator, and he began to weep.

The doctor, seeing him cry, stepped in and said, "Sir, please don't worry. If you cannot pay this all at once, we can set up a payment plan. Don't let the bill break your heart."

The old man wiped his tears, shook his head, and said, "Doctor, I’m not crying because of the money. I can pay the bill. I’m crying because I am seventy-five years old, and I realized I have been breathing God’s fresh air every single second of my life for seventy-five years, and I have never once thanked Him for it. It took a machine costing thousands of dollars to make me realize what a beautiful, free gift every single breath is."

The Holy Spirit is that spiritual breath. It recharges our souls. It gives us the capacity to love when we are tired, to hope when things look dark, and to forgive when we’ve been deeply hurt.

But notice that Jesus doesn't give this breath to just one person in isolation. He breathes on all of them together. Because the Holy Spirit doesn't just give us life; the Spirit connects us to one another. And that leads us directly to our second word: Body.

In our second reading, Saint Paul reminds the Corinthians that while there are many different gifts, there is only one Spirit. We are baptized into one Body.

Look around this beautiful church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary today. Look at the people sitting to your left, your right, in front of you, and behind you. We are an incredibly diverse group of people. We come from different neighborhoods, we have different jobs, different political views, different backgrounds, and different generational struggles. Some of us are young and full of wild dreams; some of us are older and carry the quiet wisdom of long experience.

The beauty of the Holy Spirit is that God does not want us to be identical. The Spirit does not turn us into clones. Diversity is God's design. Think of a beautiful choir or an orchestra. If every single instrument was a violin, or if every single singer sang the exact same soprano note, it wouldn't be a symphony—it would be a monotonous drone. The beauty of the music comes from the fact that the bass, the tenor, the alto, and the soprano are all completely different, yet they are singing the exact same song in perfect harmony.

You have a gift that this parish community needs. Someone here needs your capacity to listen. Someone needs your joy. Someone needs your practical skills, your financial generosity, or your quiet prayers. When we withhold our unique gifts because we think they don't matter, the entire body suffers. The Holy Spirit takes our differences and weaves them into a masterpiece.

But the story of Pentecost doesn't end inside the church walls. It doesn't stay in the upper room. Once the disciples receive the Breath of Christ, and once they realize they are united as one Body, the doors are thrown wide open. The wind blows them out into the streets of Jerusalem.

And this brings us to our final word: Bridges.

In the book of Acts, we see people gathered from every corner of the known world—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia. They spoke totally different languages. Yet, when the apostles stood up to preach under the influence of the Holy Spirit, a miracle happened. It wasn’t just a miracle of speaking; it was a miracle of hearing. Everyone heard the good news of God in their own native language.

The Holy Spirit is the ultimate builder of Bridges.

Think about how easy it is in our world today to build walls. We build walls with our judgments. We build walls with our gossip. We build walls when we refuse to listen to someone just because they think differently than we do. We live in a culture that is deeply fractured, where people are shouting at each other but nobody is actually understanding each other.

The miracle of Pentecost is the exact opposite. It takes people who are total strangers, people who should be divided by language and culture, and it builds a bridge of deep, spiritual understanding between them. The language of the Holy Spirit is not Hebrew, Greek, Latin, or English. The language of the Holy Spirit is the language of love, the language of mercy, the language of kindness, and the language of truth. And that is a language that every single human heart can understand.

My dear friends, as we celebrate this great feast today, let us remember that the same Holy Spirit that shook the room in Jerusalem two thousand years ago is present right here, right now, in this church.

Jesus is standing in our midst today. He is looking at the locked rooms of our lives, the anxieties we are clinging to, and the divisions that keep us apart. He is stepping right through those barriers, offering us His peace, and stretching out His hands.

Let us open our hearts today to receive His fresh Breath, so that our tired souls can be renewed. Let us offer our unique talents to support His Body, the Church, appreciating the beautiful diversity of our community. And finally, let us walk out of these church doors at the end of this Mass ready to build Bridges of reconciliation, understanding, and love in our families, our workplaces, and our neighborhoods.

May the Holy Spirit renew the face of the earth, and may He begin that renewal right here, inside each and every one of us.

Amen.

Chained, Concentrated, Complete (May 23, 2026: Saturday of the Seventh Week of Easter (Mass in the Morning))

My dear brothers and sisters, today we reach the final verses of both the Acts of the Apostles and the Gospel of Saint John. It is a moment of culmination, drawing the great Easter season to its close right on the doorstep of Pentecost.

In the First Reading, we find Saint Paul arriving at his final destination: Rome. He is living under house arrest, bound physically to a Roman soldier. He is Chained. Yet, look at the irony—though his body is restricted, the Word of God is completely unchained. For two full years, right from his rented lodgings, he welcomes everyone, proclaiming the Kingdom of God with absolute fearlessness and without any hindrance.

How could Paul remain so vibrant while in captivity? Because his mind was entirely Concentrated on Jesus Christ. We see a similar lesson in the Gospel when Peter turns around, notices John, and asks Jesus, 'Lord, what about him?' Jesus instantly corrects Peter's distraction, saying, 'What concern is it of yours? You follow me.' Jesus calls Peter—and calls each one of us—to stop comparing our spiritual journeys with others, and to stay concentrated on our personal call to discipleship.

When our focus is pulled away by comparisons, jealousy, or external limitations, we lose our peace. But when we focus purely on Christ, our witness becomes Complete. John closes his Gospel by noting that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written if everything Jesus did were recorded.

The ink may have dried on John’s parchment, but the story of Jesus continues to be written through our lives. Even when we feel chained by our circumstances, let us stay concentrated on Christ, so that His mission in us may be complete. Amen

Restored, Recommissioned, Resolved (May 22, 2026)

My dear brothers and sisters, failure has a way of locking us in a prison of guilt. No one knew this better than Simon Peter. Sitting by a charcoal fire on the shore of Galilee, he must have been vividly reminded of that other charcoal fire where, a few weeks earlier, he denied Jesus three times.

Instead of scolding or condemning him, Jesus meets Peter over breakfast and asks a single question three times: 'Simon, son of John, do you love me?' With each answer, Peter's three-fold denial is gently dissolved, and he is beautifully Restored. Jesus shows us that our failures do not define us; our love for Him does. His mercy is always greater than our worst moments.

But restoration is never just for our own comfort; it always comes with a purpose. The moment Peter is healed, he is immediately Recommissioned. Jesus tells him, 'Feed my lambs... Tend my sheep.' Jesus trusts this broken, restored man with His most precious possession—His flock. Our past mistakes do not disqualify us from serving the Kingdom; rather, they make us compassionate instruments of God's grace.

Finally, Jesus reveals that this path will demand everything, hinting at the martyrdom Peter will face in his old age, ending with the ultimate command: 'Follow me.' Hearing this, Peter is Resolved. He is no longer the fearful disciple who ran away in the garden; he is now a steadfast shepherd ready to lay down his life.

We see this same resolution in the First Reading, where Paul remains a bold prisoner for Christ, completely unfazed by King Agrippa or Festus. Today, let us bring our own brokenness to the Lord, allow ourselves to be restored by His love, and stand resolved to follow Him wherever He leads. Amen.

Unity, Undaunted, Unveiled (May 21, 2026)

My dear brothers and sisters, today’s readings present a striking contrast between division and unity. In the First Reading, Paul stands before the Sanhedrin, a religious council deeply divided against itself. Knowing his audience, Paul mentions the resurrection, instantly causing a fierce dispute between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. The room erupts into shouting and chaos.

In total contrast to this worldly noise, the Gospel brings us back to the quiet, sacred prayer of Jesus. He prays not just for the immediate disciples, but for all of us across the centuries, asking 'that they may all be one.' Christ desires Unity. This is not a superficial, bureaucratic uniformity, but a deep communion of hearts modeled on the love between the Father and the Son.

When the church is unified, it becomes an unstoppable force. Look at Paul the next night. The Lord stands by him in his prison cell and says, 'Courage! You have borne witness for me in Jerusalem, now you must do the same in Rome.' Armed with the assurance of God's presence, Paul stands Undaunted. The threat of the crowds, the chains, and the trial before Caesar cannot shake him because his heart is anchored in the Lord.

Through this courage, the ultimate glory of God is Unveiled. Jesus prays that the world may see His glory and recognize that the Father has loved us just as He loves His own Son.

Brothers and sisters, our fractured world desperately needs to see a united Christian community. Let us reject the gossip, the divisions, and the pettiness that tear us apart. May we stay united in spirit, undaunted in our witness, so that Christ's redeeming love may be unveiled to all. Amen.

Guardians, Givers, Grounded (May 20, 2026)

My dear brothers and sisters, parting words carry the true weight of a person’s soul. Today, Paul finishes his emotional goodbye to the Ephesian elders on his knees, weeping and praying with them on the beach. Meanwhile, in the Gospel, Jesus continues His intimate prayer to the Father for the disciples He is about to leave behind in the world.

Paul leaves the elders with a strict command: 'Be on your guard for yourselves and for all the flock.' He warns them that fierce wolves will try to invade and distort the truth. They are called to be Guardians. In a world full of noise, shifting morals, and spiritual compromise, we too are called to be guardians of the truth, protecting our families, our faith, and our communities from the 'wolves' of division and deception.

But how do guardians act? They act not out of greed, but out of love. Paul reminds them of his own example—working with his hands to support the weak—and quotes a beautiful, unwritten saying of Jesus: 'There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.' We are called to be Givers. True guardianship is rooted in self-giving love, a stewardship that pours itself out for the weak and vulnerable.

Finally, how do we find the strength to guard and to give without burning out? We do so by staying Grounded. Jesus prays to the Father for us: 'Consecrate them in the truth; your word is truth.' To be consecrated means to be set apart, deeply rooted in God's reality.

When the storms of life hit and challenges arise, let us remain grounded in the Word, so that we can boldly serve as guardians of the faith and cheerful givers of God's love. Amen.

Finished, Fearless, Father (May 19, 2026)

My dear brothers and sisters, today we are privileged to eavesdrop on two beautiful, emotional farewell addresses. In the First Reading, Saint Paul gathers the elders of Ephesus, knowing he will never see their faces again, declaring that he is bound by the Spirit to go to Jerusalem. In the Gospel, Jesus raises His eyes to heaven, praying His great High Priestly Prayer before entering His Passion.

Both Jesus and Paul speak from a place of a job well done. Jesus prays, 'I have glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do.' Paul echoes this sentiment, desiring only to 'accomplish my course and the ministry.' They both offer a life that is Finished in its purpose—not finished in the sense of defeat, but perfected in obedience.

Because their purpose was clear, they were utterly Fearless. Paul tells the elders, 'I do not place any value on my own life, provided that I complete the mission.' He knows imprisonment and persecution await him, yet he moves forward without faltering. Jesus knows the cross is imminent, yet His focus remains entirely on glorifying God and protecting His disciples.

Where did this fearless strength come from? It came from their absolute trust in the Father. Jesus constantly anchors His identity in the One who sent Him, praying, 'Holy Father, keep those you have given me true to your name.'

My reflection for us today is simple: Is our daily labor oriented toward finishing the work God actually gave us to do? When we anchor our lives in the love of the Father, we find the grace to be fearless in our mission, running our race to the finish line with joy. Amen.

Sattered, Suported, Sustained (May 18, 2026)

My dear brothers and sisters, we find ourselves in that unique, transitional space between the Ascension of the Lord and the coming of Pentecost. In the First Reading, Paul encounters disciples who had only received John’s baptism of repentance; they had not even heard of the Holy Spirit. They were living incomplete lives. In the Gospel, Jesus looks at His closest followers and cuts through their superficial confidence, saying, 'The hour is coming when you will be scattered.'

This is the raw reality of the human condition: left to our own devices, we easily become Sattered. We get scattered by sudden crises, fractured by fear, and separated from our convictions when the world pushes back.

But Jesus does not leave the sentence there. He immediately adds, 'And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.' Even in the storm of human abandonment, He is Suported. When Paul lays hands on the Ephesians, they are instantly filled with the Holy Spirit. They move from an isolated, incomplete faith into a profound awareness of God's intimate presence.

When you feel the isolation of the world closing in, remember that you are divinely supported. This divine presence leads us to the ultimate promise of today’s Gospel: 'In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.' Through Christ, we are Sustained. We are not promised an absence of hardship, but we are guaranteed a presence that outlasts it.

As we look forward to Pentecost, let us shift our gaze from the chaos that threatens to scatter us, to the Holy Spirit who supports us, and the victorious Christ who sustains us. Amen.

Ability, Assistance, Asking (May 16, 2026: Saturday of the Sixth Week of Easter)

My brothers and sisters, competence is a trait we highly value. We respect people who are experts in their fields, who speak with authority, and who know exactly what they are doing. But true spiritual growth requires us to admit where our competence ends.

In our First Reading, we meet a man named Apollos. He is an incredibly impressive figure. The scriptures tell us he was an authority on the Scriptures, he was fervent in spirit, and he spoke with great Ability and eloquence in the synagogue. He was a gifted communicator. But there was a gap in his knowledge: he only knew the baptism of John. He had not yet grasped the full reality of Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.

Here is the beautiful part of the story. Priscilla and Aquila, a faithful married couple, hear him speak. They don't publicly embarrass him. Instead, they take him aside and explain the Way of God to him more accurately. Despite all his natural talent and ability, Apollos had the humility to accept their Assistance. Because he allowed himself to be taught, he became an even more powerful instrument for the early Church, vigorously refuting opposition and pointing clearly to Christ.

This humility is the same attitude Jesus calls us to in the Gospel. Jesus says, "Whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete."

The act of Asking is a fundamental admission that we cannot do it all on our own. It is laying down our pride and our need to look completely self-sufficient. Whether we need the assistance of a colleague to learn a new skill, the advice of a friend to navigate a problem, or the grace of God to overcome a deeply ingrained sin, we must open our mouths and ask.

As we conclude this week, let us look at the areas of our lives where we are trying to manage entirely on our own strength. Let us have the humility of Apollos to accept help from others, and let us take Jesus at His word. Approach the Father with confidence, ask in the name of the Son, and open your hands to receive the grace that makes our joy complete

Toil, Trust, Triumph (May 15, 2026: Feast of San Isidro Labrador)

My brothers and sisters, today we celebrate the Feast of San Isidro Labrador. Across the country, communities are coming alive with vibrant Pahiyas festivals, decorating homes with colorful kiping and the first fruits of the earth. It is a day marked by vibrant celebration, gratitude, and community joy. But to truly appreciate the beauty of this feast, we have to look at what comes before the harvest.

Before there is a harvest, there is the backbreaking Toil. In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks honestly to His disciples about the pain they are about to endure. He says, "You will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve." Every farmer understands this reality. Plowing the earth under the scorching sun is exhausting work. Similarly, in our First Reading, Saint Paul is toiling in Corinth, facing intense opposition, exhaustion, and fear as he tries to plant the seeds of the Gospel. Whether we are tending a physical field, managing a demanding project, or trying to navigate family struggles, we all experience the sweat and tears of daily labor.

So, how do we keep going when the ground is hard and the work is heavy? The answer is Trust. In the First Reading, the Lord speaks to Paul in a vision at night, saying, "Do not be afraid. Go on speaking, and do not be silent, for I am with you." God does not take away the work, but He guarantees His presence. San Isidro Labrador is the perfect model of this deep reliance. He was a simple, hardworking farm laborer, but his priority was always his relationship with God. He would attend daily Mass before heading to the fields, trusting that if he put the Lord first, God would bless his labor. Tradition even tells us that angels plowed his fields while he was deep in prayer.

When we trust the Lord with our daily toil, He promises us a Triumph. Jesus assures His disciples, "Your grief will become joy." He compares it to a woman in labor—the intense pain is entirely forgotten the moment the child is born because of the overwhelming gladness that new life has entered the world. In the same way, the sorrow of sowing seeds is washed away by the joy of the harvest.

If you are in a season of heavy toil right now, feeling exhausted by the demands of your work or the opposition you face, look to San Isidro. Do not be afraid, for the Lord is with you. Prioritize your time with God, trust in His gentle providence, and know that your tears and hard work are planting the seeds for a beautiful, triumphant harvest

Grief, Guarantee, Gladness (May 15, 2026: Friday of the Sixth Week of Easter)

My brothers and sisters, fear and sorrow are two of the heaviest emotions we carry. Fear paralyzes us from moving forward, and sorrow anchors us to what we have lost. In today’s readings, the Lord directly addresses both of these heavy burdens.

In the First Reading, Saint Paul is in Corinth. He is facing intense opposition from the community, and it is clear he is wrestling with fear and exhaustion. But the Lord speaks to him in a vision at night, offering a powerful Guarantee: "Do not be afraid. Go on speaking, and do not be silent, for I am with you. No one will attack and harm you."

God does not promise Paul that the opposition will vanish, but He guarantees His protective presence. That divine assurance gives Paul the strength to stay in Corinth for a year and a half, continuing his mission.

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks to the profound sorrow His disciples are about to face with His impending death. He doesn't dismiss their pain. He says, "You will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve." Jesus acknowledges the deep Grief of the human experience. Whether we are grieving the loss of a loved one, a failed endeavor, or a season of life that has passed, that sorrow is real.

But then, Jesus offers the ultimate promise of transformation. He says, "But your grief will become joy." He compares it to a woman in labor. The pain is intense, but the moment the child is born, the anguish is forgotten because of the overwhelming Gladness that a new life has entered the world.

Jesus promises that the joy He gives will be so profound that no one will be able to take it away. It is a joy born from the Resurrection, a joy that proves light always conquers darkness.

If you are carrying fear about your current circumstances, hear the words spoken to Paul: "Do not be afraid, I am with you." If you are carrying grief, trust in the words of Jesus. Hold onto the guarantee that the Lord is actively working to transform your darkest sorrows into an enduring gladness. Do not quit. Do not be silent. The joy of the Resurrection is coming.

Casting, Chosen, Commissioned (May 14, 2026: Feast of Saint Matthias, Apostle)

My brothers and sisters, whenever there is a vacancy in a high-level position, the selection process is usually intense. Resumes are reviewed, interviews are conducted, and qualifications are heavily scrutinized to ensure the absolute best candidate is picked for the job.

Today, on the Feast of Saint Matthias, we see how the early Church filled the most critical vacancy in its history. Judas had betrayed Jesus and was gone. The number of the Twelve Apostles—the foundational pillars of the Church—was broken. Peter stands up and declares that another must take his office. They narrow it down to two men: Joseph called Barsabbas, and Matthias.

How do they make the final decision? They pray, and then they engage in the ancient practice of Casting lots. To our modern, professional minds, this seems like leaving leadership up to a roll of the dice. But to the early Christians, casting lots was an act of profound surrender. They were removing human bias and letting God make the final call. The lot fell upon Matthias.

Why Matthias? We don't know his resume. He never speaks a recorded word in Scripture. But the Gospel reveals the true criteria of his selection. Jesus says, "It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you."

Matthias was not the lucky winner of a lottery; he was deliberately Chosen by the Lord. His calling was rooted entirely in the grace of Christ. And this is the exact same grace that applies to every single one of us. We are not here by accident. You have been chosen by Christ to be exactly where you are today—in your specific family, your specific workplace, and your specific community.

And with that choice comes a mandate. We are Commissioned. Jesus says, "I appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain." Matthias was commissioned to be a witness to the Resurrection, taking the Gospel to the ends of the earth. We are commissioned to bear the fruit of love, joy, and peace in whatever environment we find ourselves.

Today, remember that you are not a random participant in God's plan. You are chosen. You are loved. Step into your daily tasks with the quiet confidence of Saint Matthias, ready to bear fruit that will last for eternity.

Search, Simplicity, Spirit (May 13, 2026: Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima)

My brothers and sisters, humanity has always been on a relentless quest for truth and meaning. We try to figure out the complexities of the world through science, philosophy, and endless debate.

In our First Reading, Saint Paul walks into Athens, the intellectual capital of the ancient world. He stands at the Areopagus, looking out at brilliant scholars who are caught in an endless Search for the divine. They even erected an altar to an "Unknown God." They tried to reach heaven through their own complex intellects, but God remained a distant, confusing mystery to them.

Compare the learned scholars of Athens to the three young children of Fatima, whose feast we celebrate today. In 1917, when the world was tearing itself apart during the First World War, heaven had an urgent message to deliver. But the Blessed Mother did not appear to theologians, politicians, or the great intellects of Europe. She appeared to Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta—three poor, uneducated children tending sheep in a small Portuguese village.

Heaven bypassed the pride of the world and chose the Simplicity of these little ones to reveal the profound truth about prayer, penance, and the path to peace.

Why does God so often reveal Himself to the simple rather than the sophisticated? Jesus answers this directly in today’s Gospel. He tells His disciples, "I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth."

Divine truth is not something we can fully grasp just by reading enough books, holding enough meetings, or debating our way to the top. It is a gift given by the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit requires a humble, receptive heart. The children of Fatima had that perfect openness. They simply listened to their Heavenly Mother and prayed the Rosary as she asked, allowing the Spirit of truth to guide them to heroic sanctity and change the course of history.

Today, if you find yourself confused by the complexities of life, the pressures of your work, or the state of the world, stop trying to figure it all out on your own strength. Step away from the noise and the endless searching. Embrace the simplicity of the children of Fatima. Pray the Rosary, ask the Holy Spirit for guidance, and let the Mother of God lead you directly to the known, loving embrace of her Son
