Gary V in Salt Lake, UT

2017-06-13T00:11:00.000-07:00

Gary V in Salt Lake, 2017

The last time I saw Gary (other than TV and the Internet of course) was during his Gary V by Request Concert in Iloilo City, Philippines back in 1997. I was doing an internship at Sun Cable TV as a dakilang p.a. then and I was so honored to help facilitate Gary’s press conference. What stood out to me, and it still lingers in my memory, was Gary’s warmth to the people around him. I was just there in the background, perhaps looking awkward, Gary approached us (the Gary V yan ha) and started a conversation with me and another staff. He shared how they had Sun Cable at home, too and stuff. You know when you are new and young in the media world, you are just like - in the dark. Gary took me out of the dark (pun intended, Gary has a song, "Take Me Out of the Dark, My Lord") from that experience and of course, made my day. Ano ba naman, fan eh. He spoke with spark and sincerity in his eyes and even introduced us to Angeli, his wife. That act of random kindness, as I would consider it, meant a lot to a novice press person. It meant so much to a fan. Wham!

Fast forward, 2017, in Salt Lake City! Gary V, up close! With the same energy and spirit. That’s 20 years later! Philippine’s Mr. Pure Energy ignited the audience, bringing back his top hits in the 90s and of course, the sentimental ballads that were an anthem to a lot of Filipino drama addicts in the audience. Gary’s signature locking dance craze is still there, still fluid and vivacious. Even more special this time, his daughter, Kiana, joined him on the mic. What a gorgeous and talented young princess she has become. It’s great to see their tandem on stage.

The meet and greet was like, hey I got this rehearsed and I have an agenda in mind. So I am so so sorry for holding up the line, guys. So let me share this … I showed Gary my picture of him in 1997 told him my “telenovela” (hahahaha). I had a chika-chika time with Mr. Pure Energy, wished him the best in life and told how he is an inspiration. He is an inspiration, a gift to the world! Tapos, the staff whispered, Oy , ang tagal mo na! Bam. Tapos ang moment.

This blog woke up!

So yan, VIP ako nito, ha. First class, pun intended :-)

pointing as Angeli as he introduced a song Angeli wrote

with the sweet, Angeli ... I quickly spoke with Angeli and I just muttered, "Aren't you so proud of your family?", with a sweet smile, she said yes. Then click, picture-picture.

Grabe, close kami. Mega-chika! We were laughing about what Gary shared before about his daughter Kiana, how she would literally sing her mind, like, "I am going to the kitchen ... I am a princess, I am a princess,la la la" ... now she is singing real songs ... What a beautiful young woman you have become, Kiana!

This was in the 1997, that internship, fun memory with Gary ... I got him to sign it ... and additional for my sister ...

I have a confession ...

2016-11-06T23:42:00.000-07:00

So I took two weeks off from work. It's not a vacation, nor a staycation but an "errand-cation," how about that? You know how it is when you have so many errands in between, and you have to hurry back to work? For two weeks, I didn't have to feel harassed due to time limitations to get things done. The added bonus is that you get some "diversion" in between. How about that?

First off, thanks to those who supported my little photography gig. I opened my home studio to family and friends, and it was a treat working with the little ones with their bright smiles. Since I will be back to work now, I can ONLY do some WEEKEND photography after 2 pm. Location shoot starts at $125 for an hour session.
From doctors appointments to day-to-day errands, I would probably be on the other end of the US, just driving all day. And of course, shortstops are rather a necessity while you are on the road to unwind. Here are a few stops:

https://www.facebook.com/luxebeautydayspa/

I had my facial there at $45 only and what a difference. I am coming back for next peel. I have mild to deep acne scarring, and I am hoping to smooth out some blemishes and even out skin discoloration. My aesthetician, Sherri, was such a pleasure to work with, as she explained the procedure and the products she used on my skin. They use natural products as a peeling agent. For the session, she used pumpkin and chocolate concentrated extract on my skin. It stung for a little bit but very tolerable and rather seeing noticeable exfoliation from the procedure, I experienced tightening and luminosity on my skin instead. I have two more sessions and I hoping to see some dramatic results. I will post some pictures soon. Oh, also, she gives a nice neck and hand massage during wait times.

https://www.facebook.com/Saigon-Sandwich-UT-622648931228705/

The spa is in a complex and there is a new Vietnamese food chain nearby, Saigon Sandwich. They also serve Pho and that's what I was just craving. I am a regular at Pho Hoa and I can only compare. Pho Hoa serves better brisket and portion. The Saigon place is not too bad and it's nice to be greeted by an English speaking person at the counter. I will be back there when I am the area though to try the sandwich. I got my first loyalty star. They give you something free when you get to 10. So, not bad.

Korean Drama ... I don't fall into the addicted category yet as I only watch this, more of a background while I edit photos. I got into some of the episodes, and I am more into the era drama, the dynasty era. I just love the cinematography, the costumes, the narratives and I've come to love the language even though I don't quite understand it.

After watching The Moon Embracing the Sun years ago, I just fell in love in Korean Dramas. I would say, it's my first love Drama and the recent Moonlight Drawn by Clouds parallels it. I was attracted to it because of Kim Yoo Jung. She was just a delight to watch in the previous drama as a child actress. As a teenager in the newer drama, she did amazing and not to mention the chemistry between her and Park Bo-Gum. They are so cute together. It was so good that I wish they would have created more conflicts, drama and romance for more episodes.

photo from: http://asianwiki.com/Moon_Lovers:_Scarlet_Heart_Ryeo

I have watched Scarlet Heart Ryeo ... it has good ride to it but it was hard for me to watch at first with the casting as the leading lady role seemed to struggle to fit in at first. It got better in the end. The storyline ended up gloomy, so it left a sad feeling to a lot of fans.

photo from: http://asianwiki.com/File:W_(Korean_Drama)-p1.jpg

Two Worlds: Oh, it was fun, at first then it got so twisted, confusing and chaotic with its sci-fi theme, its characters teleporting from the alternate universe of webtoon and present-time reality. It was a just ride, it reminded me of the series, LOST. However, Two Worlds is better because it ended with an ending, and a happy one. OK?! A happy ending always win!

photo from: http://asianwiki.com/images/5/51/The_Flower_in_Prison-p2.jpg

The Flower in Prison ... it's still going ... going ... going slow. Every fan is waiting for the lead characters to ... KISS. It's already on its 50th episode yet no KISS ... they are holding it up to keep the viewers ... for that KISS. Goodness, can you relate?

If you want to know the premise of Korean Drama/Romance series, watch Drama World, available on Netflix

There is no period because I have not made a confession yet

Metamorphoses

2015-11-16T23:18:00.000-07:00

The very first thing I did on my blog site … can you guess? I just changed the title to: metamorphoses. It had been Madame Butterfly for years, but Hubby pointed out the obvious or what not. But hey, I have my own story behind it. And yes, that’s the corny metamorphic story of the butterfly and how it relates to the making of my person. I don’t want to swerve away from the whole idea because, number one, I still like that corny story and I just love butterflies myself and I like my lady butterfly banner. MetamorphoSES for a title sounds like the best thing since sliced bread.

Do you know that this blog is 8 years old now? And, no more google, adsense Ads. But hey, where did the years go. How did I get here? As the great Abraham Lincoln once said, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that counts. It’s the life in your years.” As I turned, as what people say where life begins at … I am like really? I honestly get confused, oblivious of the years that passed me by, not sure how many candles to put on my cake. I will ask mom. But one thing for sure, life is good!

Life is indeed good … just turn your TV off! Right? I don’t know where to begin. One of the lessons taught in Sunday school was The Battle of Armageddon and the battle of the Gog and the Magog. Armageddon, the word itself conjures up scenes of vast armies, anguish, and extensive desolation. In the scriptures, you will find Isaiah saying the Lord will pout out war upon all the world; Jeremiah saying the same thing and speaking of these terrible things; Daniel saying so; Ezekiel saying so. We find Joel, Zephaniah, Zechariah, all proclaiming that in this last day, the day when the sun shall be darkened and the moon turned to blood and the stars fall from heaven, that the nations of the earth would gather against Jerusalem. All of them speak of it; and when that time comes, the Lord is going to come out of His hiding place.”

Mom shared about a horrifying speech posted on FB from a group I- cannot- speak- of which is somewhat a precursor to what Ezekiel prophesied on the battle of the Gog and the Magog. There are so many prophetic records by prophets from different dispensation, all from different books and prophesied by several prophets. The sequence of what comes first and of the final signs of the "end of the world" is still a blur. One thing for sure, as the Lord told Ezekiel “He would miraculously save His people from the armies of Magog so that all nations may “know that I am the Lord” (Ezekiel 38:23). I am just armed with my prayers and faith at this point and will continue to hold on to that moving forward… I have a 72-hour kit, too.:-)

So life is indeed good especially when you know whose side you’re on. Those who are still with us, we are triumphantly surviving it. We have survived havoc before our eyes including - the continual of end-of-the-world assertions, with exact dates and time even . How many end-of-the-world have you all survived? Our generation is one tough cookie, don’t you think? And oh, let’s just love one another. Let’s keep it simple.

Southern Utah Escapade

2014-09-27T00:33:00.002-07:00

I just thought I needed the weekend to do some photography outside Salt Lake Valley. I was hoping to capture the fall colors in Southern Utah with the Sand Cliffs at Zion National Park in Springdale, UT. It’s not quite Fall in Southern Utah but the park was, regardless, stunning. It was my first time and didn’t know what to expect other than what I learned online. Scroll drown for the Courts of the Patriarchs photos.

Value without the E

I planned this to be a photography escapade with hubby and didn’t want to spend much on lodging. And, we got what we wished for and what we paid for. It occurred to me as we drove into the driveway that the Inn’s name was actually not misspelled. The signage confirmed it to be the – Valu Inn. They left the e out for its value, I guess. Pun intended. I thought the reviews were just exaggeration so I gave it the benefit of the doubt. It was benefit-of- the- doubt OK because the Absolutely-No-Refund sign at the concierge compelled us to be a good sport for a couple of nights. The concierge, by the way, seemed to have not been updated since the 50s or something.

First thing I did was to check the sheets.

Good move. There were spots of pet hair on the sheets. A young man on a loose, sleeveless shirt, saggy pants, tattoo all over his arm, no-deodorant- on came to change them. He did a great job but he left his no-deodorant scent behind, unfortunately. Since Wal-Mart was just close by, we gave the room sprits of air freshener with disinfectant and kept a wax warmer on for some kiwi-sugar-plum aroma. It made a big difference and not to mention, it's cheaper than not getting a refund and paying for a new hotel.

We made it work and we had a good laugh on our being cheap.

We just wanted a good night’s rest so we could capture the sunrise at the Court of the Patriarchs at Zion National Park.

Time to Reminisce

The night was young and I promised a friend a visit. I normally don’t hang out but hubby and I had fun visiting an old friend, one of the missionaries who once shared the gospel with our family back in the Philippines. Meeting his family was a treat and reminiscing the good old days and remembering common friends were quite fun. I even saw my pictures back in my Young Women’s days, including my entry on his BR, Book of Remembrance. It was customary back then for missionaries to have ward members sign their journal or Book of Remember. This is so much fun to read what I wrote back when I was 16 …

BR entry. This is fun to relive. Look at the hat!

With former Elder Jenkins, 20 years later, with his beautiful wife. How great is this? Cellphone captured.

I had my siblings entries there as well and lots of fun good-old-timers' photos.

some 20 years ago!

We said we our goodbyes a few times but our chitchat just could not end. Just fun, fun, fun evening.

After the Sunrise

We left the Inn 5:45am, hoping to greet sunrise at 7am. It was pitch black when we left but the light rose up so quickly. We came at the park 7am. From the National Park’s main entrance, the Court was the third stop. The skies were already showing its disparity from the puffy white clouds. The weather was spectacular and the colors were nevertheless beautiful. The light at 7:30 was just perfect to capture the contrast of reddish hue of the Sand Cliff against the blue skies.

From the Trail view, we crossed the road down to the Sandbend trail to get to the waterfalls. We had a find our way to find the safest way to cross the river and to get a good angle of the waterfalls.

I did multiple exposures to capture the river, the foliage, the peak and the blue skies as I planned to stitch three exposures in HDR.This what I came up with:

from the "falls" between 7 and 8am

from the sandbend trail across the Virgin River, between 9 and 10am

After this shot, I realize my limbs were trembling. Crossing the current with my backpack and tripod took its toll. Hubby was watching me the whole time while crossing the river, coaching me which rock to step on to ensure stability. I felt so cared for. Awww. Until he yelled, “That way, you don’t want to drop your camera!” It’s the camera, of course!

Zion’s River Walk

This is the easiest hike at the park. The paved trail follows the Virgin River from Temple of Sinawava up to the mouth of the Narrows, under hanging gardens, past pools, brooklets and towering cliffs and accessible to strollers and wheelchair. The scene was just beautiful!

Weeping Rock

The Virgin River

We left the Park around 1pm. Did I mention that Rangers were kind to let us in without charging us? We thought we were supposed to pay at the exit but no one was there. We could not complain.

Southern Utah is beautiful! We’ll be back next time and perhaps camp at the ground to catch the sunrise.

breakfast at The All American Diner

We left stuffed. The All American Diner serves real American pancakes! As the server said, "Yeah, this is your plate and we don't mess around with our pancakes!" Indeed!

Hello 2014

Picking up Where I Left Off

There is nothing much coming out of my brain right now but I know I have to break the silence. It’s been nine months since the devastating Haiyan exited the Philippines and the country still needs our prayers and support. On the other hand, my own reality took over since the super typhoon. Gladly enough, the year of the horse kicked off with better opportunities, compensating for the hardships 2013 brought.

Recently, I took a short vacation with my husband, and for the first time, without worrying about the job I left behind. You fill in the blanks.

Why Gamble Fun Away?

Nothing grand but there is nothing better than hitting the road early in the morning to beat the highway rush to – Vegas. The early drive was just the beginning of fun. OK. What’s fun about driving in the desert or counting Joshua trees? Well, call me corny but the 6-hour-drive, away from the normalcy of our lives, was just what we needed to start our 10^th year wedding anniversary. By the way, for ultimate vacation experience, we left our DSLR’s at home.

We don’t go to Vegas to gamble, believe it or not. We just want to ensure that we have fun. We don’t go there for the heat either, who does? During the day, Vegas is … OK, stay in door. For starter, we stayed at Royal Resort. I was thrilled to see the charming lobby with actually no casinos! Can you believe? Even better, across the street is – Ross! A light bulb just lit up. I do need a sundress!

Royal Resort Poolside, Thanks to: https://mymotels.com/propertyimages/258708/royal_resort_photo5_las_vegas_nv_unitedstates.jpg

We held it up ‘til close to dinner to make it all worth it. Fiesta Filipina on Jones Blvd and 33^rd serves traditional day-to-day Filipino dishes. My favorite is their lechon kawali while my husband always goes for the barbeque. Affordable dinner plus free a teleserye airing on cable television made the experience more like a trip back home to the Philippines.

Wishing for Zen

Adjacent to the restaurant was a spa, a zen in an oasis. That’s what we just needed! I think I self-hypnotized myself with that zen in mind, the receptionist didn’t have to speak English to explain their services. I opted for a deep-tissue massage. Bad idea, especially when you already have a Thai masseuse. First off, my feisty attendant stripped the sheet off of me. What the heck? I was shocked as I covered my top with my two hands while she was explaining to me to use the towel instead. Oh, I see. I forgave her although she didn’t say sorry. I let her do her job. Here comes the - deep-tissue massage. I am Asian but I have not had a Kung-Fu Panda kneading my back. Imagine. I went out of that place sore and the outdoor heat even at sundown didn’t help. Right when we got to our place, I plunged straight into pool. Whoa, the water was as warm as the summer breeze at 8pm in Vegas, not the cooling off I was expecting. The jetted tub across looked - torture!

It was not all the terrible as I am recounting the experience because I got a kick out of it. I didn’t need Tylenol PM for the night, I was over and out without further ado. Zzzen at last!

Vegas’s Center of Attraction

We stayed out of the strip because it’s really not the main attraction in Vegas. It’s actually the – Vegas Temple. First thing first: to the beacon of light in the City of Glitz.

Thanks to: https://www.lds.org/bc/content/church/temples/las-vegas-nevada/images/las-vegas-nevada-808x480-CWD_100714_JAnderson.jpg

Sitting on the eastern edge of the city, 13 miles NE of McCarran International Airport, the Vegas temple was first LDS temple built in Nevada. “The six soaring spires rising from the building echo the arresting red desert peaks of nearby Sunrise Mountain (Las Vegas Nevada Temple, 2014).” The experience inside is no comparison to the stereotypical glitz and glamour of Vegas Strip. I am just glad there’s a temple in Sin City.

Cirque du Soleil LOVE

Credits to: http://vegasfamilyevents.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/LOVE-by-Cirque-du-Soleil-Valentine-Day-Giveaway.jpg

You know Cirque … the last thing my husband would husband to choose to see. But hey wait, it’s the Beatles! We got a good compromise. For him, the best part was the -- Volkswagen Beetle! How predictable! It was volley of visuals and surprisingly not much of stunts for a cirque. The Cirque Du Soleil construal of the evolution of the Beatles in dance, mime, effects and props, cultural icons, ornate costumes was like a salad bowl of intriguing, multicolored fruits from the – tropics. There were a few times during the show where I had to focus somewhere else, observing the technological automation of the platforms and the mechanism of the pulleys. The Mirage Theater alone was quite a fascination to me. The show was fantastic but I am not sure if I really liked it. I like some of the acts and of course the dancing and but some were just too bizarre. The little kids with the blank faces were kind of creepy and the walking boots were cool but there was something eerie to it. It’s all a combination of Wow, cool, Wow, weird, cool, wow, okay, weird, why. Oh, I was too dizzy to clap at the end of the show and that’s probably I didn’t hear much of an applause from audience either. Well, it was quite an experience. I am glad my husband took me to LOVE Cirque du Soleil, but it’s not all we needed.

The Hoover Dam

We know what a dam is, a big concrete barrier for water reservoir as source of hydroelectric power. So, what so different about the Hoover Dam? Well first off, it is really colossal! It’s one of the biggest man-made structures in the world and one of the world’s largest producers of hydroelectric power.

thanks to my android phone

Constructed in the during the depression, the dam was constructed to prevent flooding as well as provide much-needed irrigation and hydroelectric power to arid regions of states like California and Arizona. Just imagine how much of attraction it was for thousands of men who lost their jobs during the depression. The influx of workers turned the quiet town of Vegas to a bustling city.

Hubby was quite surprised to see I was enjoying the dam tour.

Crepes Expectation and a Walk at the Botanical Garden

We went to crepe heaven and had breakfast for lunch. We were offered a drink as if it was the best part of the meal and perhaps more expensive than my 9-dollar crepe with my usual strawberry banana filling. We had apple juice and we’re good, off to our next destination – Bellagio.

my crepe plate

Hubby's plate

Grand at no cost, the scene was spetacular. Directly off Bellagio’s front desk is the elaborate botanical garden display. This is when I wish I had my DSLR, but cellphone also worked.

Botanical Garden

especially taken with daughter in mind. She loves horses!

Oh wait, how I can miss the gelato. Vivido is a Gelato heaven!

Vivido Gelato on 1000 S Rampart Blvd

Saving the Best for Last – Seafood City.

I am just surprised that they didn’t much this time. I didn’t see the Barrio Fiesta Bagoong Sweet flavor! And, no UFC banana ketchup and no UFC sweet chili sauce! The mangoes are the best – $9/box! When we went home, I realized that it’s from Mexico. But … they are still yummy!

Cutting this short ...

Call me corny, but the 6-hour-drive back to Salt Lake put a grand finale to our 10^th year wedding anniversary celebration.

Typhoon Fundraising Weekend

2013-12-01T02:15:00.002-07:00

It was a busy weekday, yet the aftermath of typhoon Haiyan seized our busy lives as we all tried to wrap our heads around reports, images and videos showing the magnitude of the devastation of the storm. Just a couple of days after Yolanda hit the Philippines, I found myself in the group conversation of volunteers, pitching in to organize a fundraiser for our friends who at the time still didn’t have words from their families back home. We worry and yet we all bided our time, thinking of ways to help, any help we could give. In a matter of days, we got people and volunteers putting all campaign materials and resources together.

The Winter Market

This weekend started with an early setup for a booth for the Winter Market at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. Our cultural group, Kultural Pinoy Ensemble of Utah was privileged to set up a booth of merchandise to fundraiser for the Typhoon victims. With many other vendors, the whole event was graced by cultural entertainment from various ethnic groups in the valley. The whole event gave us a good coverage and we thank our friends at the UCCC for always supporting our cause.

Kobe Royal Garden Reception (online image)

At Kobe Royal Garden Reception, we were greeted by the cozy ambiance of beautiful flower arrangements, well-coordinated linens and dining setup. When I first came in, I said, wow, they really prepared for us!

Guests started to trickle in but as soon as I saw my own set of guests came in, had them situated, I concentrated on my assignment – the program.

I met the lovely, super trooper, Erin Collard. You might have heard her on KISN 97 or most recently at B98.7. Oh, she is just a real trooper. I went over the program and what we were hoping to happen at the event. Well, I didn’t have to do much. She made my job real easy. Thanks, Erin!

One of the guests I looked forward to meeting was Miss Philippine Water 2014, 19-year-old Angelica Galindez. Just like how she did it in winning the crown, Angelica came with her natural beauty that won everybody’s heart at the pageant. Angelica has alopecia, a condition in which the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss. Wearing her crown, Angelica was confident yet sweet. She is just a jewel!

Miss Philippine Water 2014, 19-year-old Angelica Galindez

And of course, Miss Rosie Nguyen, was there to support us. She was wearing one of my favorites, her yellow silk chiffon gown. Rosie is a full-time graduate student at the University of Utah. She is pursuing a Master’s degree in Journalism and will graduate in Spring 2014. Rosie along with the Vietnamese community has always been anxious in supporting many of our community events. Thanks, Rosie! You are one smart, sweet gal!

Angelica and Rosie were a hit at the party. They sold hundreds of tickets for the raffle draw! Thank you, ladies!

Adding delight to our sumptuous dinner that night was our entertainers. This is just the best part of being a program coordinator – you get to meet the celebrities: (more photos coming soon)
Joseph Buenaflor (like I don’t know this guy, kidding, we’re from the same region in the Philippines). Joseph is from Kidapawan City, Philippines. He started singing at an early age of eight and has won several awards in many musical competitions. Joseph recently wowed thousands of Jazz fans when he sang the National Anthem at the play off between the Jazz and San Antonio Spurs at the Energy Solutions Arena here in Salt Lake. Jojo, as I call him, is the pride of our community. He sang two beautiful songs while his 3-year-old daughter was twirling around in the background. It was so cute!

Mike Anderson. Mike is a husband, a father, a media man, a nerd (the best part), a gamer and a comedian. All in one package, Mike has covered a wide range of serious topics as well done human-interest stories that gained national attention. A natural comedian himself, he’s been doing his comedy acts seen at HBO Aspen Comedy Festival, and heard on XM Sirius Satellite Radio. Mike is the winner of the "STARZ Stand Up Now" online comedy competition. Well, he was a funny guy. And, he’s a good sport too. I had to hold up my “5-minute warning”, geez, the guy wrapped it up for me and hit his last funny note right on time! Who can do that?

Jen Marco. An accomplished studio recording artist and vocalist, Jen Marco has produced and recorded in more than 40 different studios in Utah and has been heard in many jingles, TV commercials, exercise videos, and in Donny and Marie Osmond's Las Vegas and Atlantic City shows. She has enjoyed singing the National Anthem for a Utah Bee’s game. She also performed at the City Creek Center grand opening extravaganza, wowing a crowd of over 50,000 people at the Stadium of Fire show. Jen was a just joy to watch. She partied with us, after the party. What a trooper!

Jen Marco

Makayla Bezzant and Joseph Espiritu. Makayla and Joseph competed in Open competitions in both Latin and Standard dances during several local and out of state competitions. They’ve placed in the finals in some of these competitions. All in all they compete in the 10 dances—chacha, samba, rumba, paso doble, jive, waltz, tango, vienniese waltz, foxtrot & quickstep. Makayla Bezzant, daughter of Jennifer Bezzant is a Junior at Lone Peak High School. Joseph Espiritu, son of Eddie & Belenda Espiritu is a Sophomore at Pleasant Grove High School. Both are currently in the BYU Youth Dancesport Team & enjoy dancing together. These youngsters are just a – dynamite of – energy, energy, grace and definition … just wow! I wish they could put all that in a bottle.

Makayla and Joseph

We appreciate the patience of everybody at the event as our kitchen staff managed every single attendee. The first thought to be just a small, intimate gathering, turned out to be a blast of supporters filling the entire reception. I immediately became one perky waitress! Fortunately, everybody was just a good sport. Thank you all for being such a forgiving group of customers! I wasn’t too bad as a waitress myself – I didn’t spill anything on anyone! Yay!

We were so moved when the Taiwanese community handed our organizer a big check. Thank you, Professor Fang and Jack Chen of the Taiwanese Association of Greater Salt Lake. Kobe’s management also told how they prepared for the event. What a selfless act of giving. It was quite a humbling experience for all of us.

It was a fantabulous and well-attended event, more than we all expected. Wow (again), what more can I say? MABUHAY. MARAMING SALAMAT. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

Thank you, A.J. Mariano and Terah Taylor for covering our event.

All this had not been made possible without our organizers and volunteers and the outpouring support from our community.

If She Can Beat Yolanda, So Can We

2013-11-17T02:43:00.003-07:00

Over the past few days, with the aftermath of super typhoon Yolanda, we have been seeing all the bad brought by the super typhoon. As a nation, we not only suffer tremendous loss but unfortunately, shame. This major disaster, the trauma and chaos it created, seems to have opened a pandora's box. It's not that this corruption and all in my country has been a secret. But, geez, my heart is breaking, this crisis opened up the magnitude of our problem, how *&%^$* is the government and so forth. Just stressful to think about.

So to Yolanda, goodbye. But, you left a pretty heavy mark which, I hope, will soon be all erased.

I had a loong day today. I was tired but all this mess back home has been in my mind. I created this this art to counter Yolanda's plague.

HELP: Picking up the Pieces afer Typhoon Yolanda

2013-11-15T01:52:00.001-07:00

Two days before Yolanda hit, I posted an urgent call for my hometown in Pulupandan, a coastal area in Negros Occidental in the Philippines, to pack a suitcase of necessities to prepare themselves to evacuate to safer grounds. The forecast on the intensity of the typhoon described the typhoon to be the most dangerous storm to hit earth this year. Seeing that my town is situated by the coast facing the strait of Guimaras island, the imagery of big waves surging into my idyllic hometown played in my mind. I posted the urgency of the matter on facebook, because, I know, many of us back home would take the chances to weather the storm. With my two sisters and niece and nephew left in the town I grew up in, I could not bear of thought of the prospect of losing them solely because they were not prepared. Fortunately, my town was spared from major damages. An interesting pie form image was captured via satellite, showing the areas in my province that were spared from the wrath of the storm.

http://www.mynoytech.com/2013/11/unusual-photo-captured-via-satellite.html

When Yolanda first hit, postings in social media showed videos and images of the wild activity of the storm while other accounts told the actuality of the storm to be far worse than what they could describe. Then came some news of evacuation centers torn by the intensity of the typhoon. Thought to be a safe haven, shelters and even stronger buildings were swept away by the strong winds. Following the furious gust of winds was a strong storm surge, described by Ted Failon of ABS CBN News as though the whole ocean moved into the dry land.

I first heard of 11 deaths, then a 100, and the following day, news reported the death toll at 10,000 approximately - in one city alone. For a second there, our hearts stopped, trying to wrap our heads around the whole thing. The death toll is still rising as relief and medical teams access affected areas.

With the aftermath of the devastation floods the internet with visuals of casualties and massive destruction, the Philippine gained the compassionate attention of the world. The generosity of the global community overwhelms us with gladness and gratitude. I am very humbled. My own crisis became so minuscule.

Here in Salt Lake alone, the Filipino community is very engaged in organizing fundraiser events and efforts to generate funds to support relief operations back home. Here are the events and fundraising efforts in Salt Lake that we should all support:

My husband who served an LDS mission in Tacloban wrote:

Dear Ward family and friends,

Thirteen years ago, I was a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Philippines Tacloban Mission (1998-2000). This mission that I love so much was the WORST hit area in the recent Typhoon in the Philippines. All missionaries are safe and accounted for, but there is more to do. There have been many images and videos over the past few days that have left me heartbroken and saddened. I can hardly recognize the streets and scenes of Tacloban City that I traveld on those many years ago. There are so many wonderful people and friends there in need, both members of our faith and not. Being one of many lucky missionaries who served among the people of Leyte, Samar and Biliran, I ask that you pray for them and help them in any way that you can. Please donate whatever you are able to the Church Humanitarian Fund (located on the standard Tithing/Donation Slip) or the Red Cross or other reputable charity organization.

Thank You from the bottom of my heart,
Christian Pfister

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you all for your continued prayers and support. Here's a local Rotary Club accepting and managing donations for relief operations in the area.

With this traumatic disaster and disheartening aftermath Haiyan caused, my countrymen demonstrate great resilience, bravery and faith. My Filipino brothers and sisters, you are all just one "tough cookie"! We can do this! Kakayanin natin ito!

For any questions, please comment here. I will reply as promptly as I can. Thank you all.

God bless the Philippines!

For Our Dear Andrew Kay Davis

2013-10-11T01:50:00.000-07:00

It was one fun Saturday afternoon in 2007 when Andrew Davis introduced me to blogging. While he was patiently teaching me the ways of the World Wide Web that afternoon, the rest of the family was engrossed playing the classic Nintendo Super Mario. The popular tune of the game along with the goofy hecklings and laughter of my husband and sister-in-law and the kids enlivened our small condo unit. It was one spontaneous afternoon when I didn’t care how loud everybody was, how unruly the cables, cartridges and throw pillows were on the floor. This is perhaps one of my fondest memories of Andrew, happily together with my sister-in-law and their kids. It was that afternoon when I created Butterfly Connection, my first blogsite, this blogsite. I dedicate this special entry to Andrew, a giant with a fun-spirited, gigantic, giving heart.

Towering 6’5”, Andrew was a fun giant even to my own daughter. Following along with her cousins, my daughter would ask Andrew to lift her up to flip and fly through the air. “Me too, me too, Uncle Andrew!” she would ask. Only Andrew could do that exhilarating toss, high up to the ceiling! Our family gatherings weren’t over until Andrew joined us from one of his long shifts as an RN. Regardless how tired and sleep deprived, Andrew would keep up with long conversations on any topic. At many of our family parties, he would give me a long tutorial on ebay, google adsense, godaddy and many others. He encouraged me to keep writing. He gave me a book on how to create a home business with my craft projects. With my health issues, he would give me a thorough explanations of my symptoms and treatment options which none of my doctors ever could! Well, he said, “your doctors can only give you thirty minutes of their time at the most while I was able to talk to you for – two hours!” Priceless!

As the years passed, I saw less and less of Andrew. Regardless of circumstances and decisions made, we missed him in many family gatherings. Our family loves Andrew Davis. I could only mutter to myself, “It’s weird, Andrew is not here.” Although he may have been asleep, tired or late for dinner, it was not the same without Andrew.

Just this past Monday, my husband went in my office while I was working and shared the sad news – Andrew passed away from a tragic accident. I burst into tears, shocked at what seemed so unreal. We just love Andrew. Memories of him and worries for the young children he left behind raced through our minds. For the first time, I saw my husband so saddened, worried and upset for the loss of Andrew Davis.

I am not exactly sure how to end this entry. I am at a loss for words of how to tie all this together while I have so much to say about this cool, cool guy who left us too soon. I just wish there would have been more time. But indeed, life is too short. May this be a comfort to all of us, from the Book of Alma 40:11, “Behold, it has been made known unto me by an angel, that the spirits of all men, as soon as they are departed from this mortal body, yea, the spirits of all men ... are taken home to that God who gave them life.”

In heaven, we shall soon see you again. Rest in peace, Andrew – our dear friendly giant.

... Because Life is Good

2013-07-22T22:10:00.001-07:00

Over the past few months, I had been deliberating whether to keep my current home-based job or take a leap of faith in pursuing a career in Graphic Arts and Photography full-time. My mind was debating back and forth with the pros and cons until I recently saw a thread on facebook that read, “Rally for Mike”. I froze in empathy when I recognized the family. Mike is married to a friend who is also from my province in the Philippines. Reading Siegred’s story of her husband’s battle against cancer, I choked in tears, just feeling their pain, their worries and their hopes for their young family. I am sharing their story:

Unexpected Turn

by Siegred Emery

… I should start my account three years ago when the crux of our struggle began. Mike always had an interest in the medical field. He pursued a career as a nurse where he was lucky to land a job at a shock trauma ICU as a new grad. Because of his chosen field I think that he was more aware of his health and found a mole that had grown behind his left ear. It brought up a concern and so we had it checked. When the results came, they advised us that it was a malignant skin melanoma. The doctors then performed a relatively easy procedure of removing the cancer and took some precautions of taking wider margin both on the skin and the lymphanoids. All of the tests came back with positive news. He was given a 95% chance of the disease not coming back. We were ecstatic! Life is not perfect but it was great. We had our 3rd child, sold our house and prepared to move to California where Mike was accepted at USC to start Nurse Anesthesia School. The last two years were hard both on our relationship and our family because we saw so little of him. Those sacrifices we thought were relatively small compared to the bigger picture, we wanted a better future both for us and our kids. … We rejoiced when he graduated. Mounting student loans and credit card debts will be paid. We had a job lined up that would help us do all the things we have worked hard for. We were looking forward to next year. Our dreams would finally be realized. After he finished, we moved back with his parents so he could work on his boards while I worked. Our plan was successful! He passed! For the first time in years, life was less stressful. I think I might have forgotten to knock on wood when I thought that because on October 18, our life came crashing down. Mike woke up with a head splitting headache far worst than what he had been experiencing for the past 3 weeks. So without insurance and no money we braved the ER. We needed this headache gone. A few hours and a CT scan later, we heard the news that has totally taken us aback and shattered our world. His cancer had come back and a sizable tumor had grown in his brain. What?!! How could this be possible? We were regular with his skin checkups? What did we miss? There were no signs that it was there growing for the past 3 years. They admitted him and scheduled an emergency surgery the next day. There was a glimmer of hope. His doctors said that the tumor was in a good spot (in between his frontal lobe) and they were confident they had removed it all. With some radiation and constant checkups, he had a good chance of being “around” for years. We’ll take it! We were hopeful. There’s one more thing we needed to get done to make sure he was clear, a full MRI and body scan. But the results from that were even worse than we thought and were prepared to hear. The cancer had spread to his lungs, inoperable and stage 4. Our only hope for now is to prevent the cancer from growing too fast. My Husband!!! The man I’ve never heard complain, that has diligently sacrificed a lot for his family. … After 8 grueling years of school he is now stuck worrying about how he will be able to pay all our debts. Even at this time my husband is the most responsible person I know. … Now my mission is to give him that same peace he gave me at one of the lowest times of my life. My charge is for him to enjoy whatever time he has left and spending that time doing fun activities with us, going to the park, thanksgiving and Christmas together without having to worry where we would get the funds to do it and pay our bills. We have exhausted our means from years of schooling. And as much as every fiber of my being wants him to not worry and live the way he deserves, I am only one person and cannot execute the impossible. So aside from your prayers, that would be to help me help him spend as much time with his kids without a thought of worry of his “assumed” responsibility and Live a life well spent. https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/qqk1/rallyformike

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many Emery stories out there. But from their story, I emerged firm with answers to my quest for a better life for my family. Their story revalidated my family values, my faith and hope for the uncertain future. We hear cancer all around but when you know the people behind these cancer stories, their account becomes more real. I invite my readers to get to know the Emerys, know their story and help us support their cause. http://www.rallyforemerys.com

Keeping our Tradition Alive

2013-05-20T23:14:00.003-07:00

It was quite a blessing to have a downpour of rain to our dry Utah soil over the weekend, but I had hoped it would have stopped, just for our show at the Living Tradition Festival in downtown Salt Lake. It’s been awhile since I last danced and I humored myself, “Why does it have to rain on my first dance?” On the other hand, I had myself prepared for the prospect of dancing under the rain at the festival. I thought it would just be fun! Then I visualized all my eye make-up smearing down through my face – that’s not a good picture there. Fortunately, the weather quite saw the picture of horror in my mind and – the rain stopped! Am I spoiled or what? It turned out to be just a perfect day for everyone!

I was so grateful for the cooperative weather but everything wasn’t that perfect. I started off with some car problem on my way to our pre-show rehearsal. At the rehearsal itself, I had my mind all focused trying to catch up with new instructions and revisions. Pressure and stress overcame me that I had to simplify my role. The rain already paved the way for a perfect weather, but here comes some impetuous strain. Let me say it that way. As the rehearsal went on, I humored myself again – “I can always wink, look cute, and flirt a little on stage if I ever mess up.” That was the plan.

South Stage of the County building. Our thirty-minute show started with the Singkil dance from the Muslim suite. Since I simplified my role, I got the chance to watch the first half of the presentation and I had a great view of the audience as well. As the Singkil princess was being entered into the stage, I heard people from backstage gasping and wowing. Wearing an elaborate sequined, figure-flattering gown, the princess took everyone’s breath away with her royalty candor and poise especially when she stepped gracefully in and out of the clicking bamboos, while twirling her elegant fans on both hands, all in harmony with the live beat of kulintang and kalatong (indigenous percussions). The rest of the entourage complemented the princess as they did their best rendition of their parts as the prince, umbrella maids, fan dancers, scarf dancers, malong dancers, and as male escorts and bamboo clickers. The whole piece was a picture of vibrancy, elegance and dynamics. The Muslim suite ended with the audience cheering in applause.

Toni Rose Perkins as the Singkil Princess

Now came the rural collection. I am pleased with how my plan materialized. I did improvise indeed. This time, I felt less stressed and I started having some fun. I realized it was not so bad after all. The audience’s warm applause was invigorating and I felt like I was just partying with friends. This is the best part of it all – dancing on stage just like partying with friends. The whole thematic composition of the rural suite was after all “pista sa nayon” or fiesta in the village. It really was a party on stage – we were swirling and turning with our colorful skirts, skipping and playing with our hats and other props, just plainly having some fun. It’s been awhile since I went back to the Philippines and that very scene was just like – home.

Dancing Subli

It was a busy day with some stresses along the way but all that forgotten after a well-celebrated performance. On the hindsight, I just thought I should embrace spontaneity more and just go with the flow. At times, we all need that, don’t we?

Behind the scene. We are devoted volunteers, sacrificing our time away from our family and making arrangements with our jobs to accommodate rehearsals. We have a very talented and dedicated Creative Director, who not only choreographs our dances but also designs our costumes and props. And no, this is not his full-time job. He is an in-demand trauma nurse by profession. I don’t know how he does it but he does it – waking up as early as 2am to get our props ready, always on top of our rehearsal schedules, oversees the entire dance choreography, training volunteer dancers and he plays the percussions and dances the tinikling as well. And no, he’s not being paid to do all that. We all do this in the spirit of community service and to keep our Philippine Tradition alive in Utah.

The 8th Annual Scholarship and Awards Gala by the Utah Asian Chamber of Commerce and Utah Asian Charitable Foundation

2013-05-13T12:30:00.001-07:00

I just a attended an awarding event that highlighted respectable achievers in the Asian American community. It was such an honor and pride to be there and I can’t help but think of a recent conversation I had with a veteran, who I might say validated the ingenuity of Asians. He said he wanted to go back to school so he could teach Math as he stressed, “our children are losing it.” With his observation of academic leniency among our youth today, he expressed concern that America might lose its edge to China. Being Asian myself, I take pride in that but at the same time I don’t think it really is a bad thing – we are basically just becoming more – globally united. How about that? As much as I hate to bring up any topic that identifies any race, the “but’s” are quite obvious. I went to a college here in the US where 25% of the student body were international students from Asia who populated 40% of the honor roll. English was our second language (third for me) but we spoke the language and we ace our English classes. Asian students excelled in Math and in computers and turned in their projects and homework - on time! And I might add, we didn’t’ party, we just went to school, just eager to learn. And oh, we didn’t watch TV that much either except for CNN. On the other hand, I don’t want to be an egotistic, ungrateful immigrant because with all truthfulness, it's this country that provided great resources and convenient facilities for these students to excel. I do hope that our young generation would see these resources and turn them into gold. And, I don't worry much about losing the edge to China. We just need China, period.

I felt really very privileged to have worked with the Utah Asian Chamber of Commerce this year to celebrate and award outstanding Asian Americans in the community. It was an honor to be one of the graphic designers and photographers for the event.

With the collaboration of the UACC board, we came up with a theme, designed to celebrate the Asian American and the Pacific Islander heritage month.

The committee is composed of volunteers and for such big an event, it’s impressive how the committee was able put together a well-coordinated event in a short amount of time. Congratulations to the Gala committee!

I was browsing the net for events to watch for this year and I was instead lead to predictions that sound rather dreary. I said to myself, well, these predictions are no different from what the bible says about the Second Coming. By no means I am making my own “Mayan” calculation of the world’s ending, but we all see the “signs of the time” coming about. I don’t mean to start this entry on a cheerless note either, because the Second Coming is a scriptural truth Christians look forward to. As Jesus ascended into heaven, two angels declared to Christ’s Apostles, "This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11). As many apocalypse believers were left red-faced when the December 21^st’’s doomsday date didn’t materialize, Christians believe the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night … “rejoice evermore” (Thessalonians Chapter 5). I will leave it at that.

Until then, how about we bide our time in gratitude, in service to one another and celebration of life? First, gratitude. I don't know how else we can be happy with what we have if we don't see them to start with. If you still have your job, your house, your family and friends, there is lot to be thankful for. With continuing news on unemployment, families losing their homes to foreclosure, properties being repossessed, businesses being shut down among others, I am in no position to complain at any rate. I am also grateful for many good people around me, around us. I see it a blessing to be surrounded by good people. This reminds me of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in the book of Genesis in the Bible. Because of the wickedness of the people in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, the Lord told Abraham that he would destroy the cities. Abraham then bargained with the Lord to spare the cities if there were righteous people in them. From fifty righteous people, the Lord agreed with Abraham to spare the city for even just ten righteous people for their sake. But to no avail, the cities were destroyed. I am grateful that I do not live in this circumstance. Just from facebook alone, I have over a hundred local friends who, I am sure, are righteous! I admire the many great people I met along the way, whose philanthropic deeds have changed people’s lives. Mine is for one. I am student of many unspoken teachers and silent heroes from a pool of day-to-day people making a difference in their communities.

Non-Profit/Community Events
Since late last year, I have been actively participating in many non-profit and community events, sharing my little skill in photography. I was privileged to attend a recent charity event, graced by distinguished speakers, entertainers, artists, singers and volunteers from different sectors, all in support for a great cause to help orphans in Tanzania and Uganda. I was in a company of good, beautiful people who were making efforts to make the world a better place. I came out a better person.

AMERICA, A Great Country to Live In
US of A, the land of the free where equality and protection of the youth and of our rights are highly policed but its own citizens. As an immigrant, I am grateful for the opportunities, the liberty and all the conveniences this country has given me: the right to education, to housing, to speak my mind, to be a weird artist, to safe roads, clean drinking water, convenient bathrooms everywhere and the many amenities you call - necessities. In tribute to all Americans who made liberty available to all, I wrote this short speech in my History class back in college:

" ...America .... a land of immigrants from different cultures that share one common interest – freedom! ... As early as the 17^th through the early 19^th century, this land called the New World was founded by people from different colonies in Europe, in the hope of building the freedom they didn’t experience in their own lands. Referred to as settlers, these immigrants were from the British Isles with English, Scottish, Welsh, and Ulster Irish colonies.... Some of these immigrants came as indentured servants in exchange for passage to the New World. Some came, like the English pilgrims, for religious freedom who established settlement in New England colonies. Our founding founders fought hard to defend liberty in the New World evidenced by the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) and American War of Independence to break free from the British Empire. Even up to these days, the same reason prevails why people move to America – freedom!
Freedom, however, through the different challenges of times, was a work in progress. From the long struggle to obtain independence from the British Empire, issues on slavery to women’s rights, freedom had a long and difficult journey through the course of this country’s history. With all these battles in defense of liberty, lives were taken but many kinds of heroes rose – Americans were born! Heroes and martyrs who went to many battles to defend freedom and those who died and suffered the pains during these difficult times were the high cost of the liberty and progress we enjoy today. They, who brought forth this liberty and those who continue this legacy and spirit in our days and for the generations to come, are the true Americans.
I am an immigrant myself. I came from a small town in the Philippines where the word America means a lot of things to many people. Even thousands of miles away, with the aid of television and other media, the idea of modernization and progress in America has reached even our small town. America was a picture of progress where people are wealthy and beautiful as the Hollywood stars. With the modern- industrial looking buildings, clean, paved roads, acres of space filled with groovy cars ...this imagery of America was just so unreachable to think of. Needless to say, America is a dream to many people. .. Not quite as consistent with how Hollywood portrays it at times, but America, in many ways, is indeed a land of opportunities. It is a place where options are available and where liberty and equality are protected by the law and by its own people. Regardless of race, color, gender and status in life, each one has a place in this free country.
... America, land of the free! Thanks to those who came before us, thanks to the forefathers who protected this freedom. I am ever grateful to be a recipient of the fruits labored by heroes, martyrs and selfless Americans who through the centuries, in big or small efforts, made this freedom available to me, even a foreigner to this land. Thanks to the Americans who keep this freedom alive. Thanks to the Americans who keep us safe and free. Thanks to the Americans who keep this country … a country for all! To you all, I am forever grateful.

This is a great time to live. We have more options now, almost limitless. While we see and hear many ills in the world, we have a lot of good going on: good Samaritans still exist, mothers putting career opportunities aside to raise a family, husbands who honor their wives, children who obey, preachers who preach and neighbors who look out for each other. I can't think of a better time and place to live. May we all start this year, if you haven't yet, in gratitude for, first - what we have and for the possibilities of more prosperity to come our way. Did I say prosperity - why not? Wishing you all the health and wealth this 2013!

Feliz Natividad ... from the bottom of my heart ...

2012-12-25T00:47:00.001-07:00

I find it hard to begin this entry without mentioning the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. To recall, a heavily armed man walked into a Connecticut elementary school and opened fire, leaving the whole nation in grief at the loss of twenty young school children and six adults. My heart cries out to every parent, grandparent, friends and neighbors shattered by this senseless act. As difficult and tender as this topic may be, I would like to imagine Christmas being celebrated joyously by these little ones, this time, surrounded by a throng of angels with our Maker on High. Dave Checkets, a lay minister for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, overseeing ten LDS congregations including the one in Newtown expressed, "… little children are alive in Christ. Though the nature of the crime is the essence of evil, our faith tells us that these children burst into the presence of God and are safe in His arms.” (Benedict, J. (2012, Dec 18). Our neighborhood was recently petrified by a shooting incident that fortunately ended peacefully. I have nothing but gratitude - first off, for our safety. Anything that keeps my family safe and together is a great blessing.

Family – my favorite F word. We have our own share of challenges but we are stronger than ever!
It is my prayer that whatever we all go through in life, let’s not give up on – Marriage and Family!

Extending family further, we have a community of church members who watch after another. I am pleased to be a member of Relief Society, a worldwide organization for women that believes in “Charity never faileth”.

Through compassionate service, welfare and organizational related meetings and activities, Relief Society prepares women for the blessings of eternal life by helping them increase their faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and help those in need. Along with other auxiliary organizations, Relief Society women help organize gatherings and parties such as our recent Ward Christmas party which was attended by church members, neighbors and friends. It was joy for me to capture spontaneous moments that bring a spark of magic of the season.

Another F word I like is – Friends. It’s great to be out with a good company of friends. I hardly go out but when I do, I make sure it’s worth my time. I thank our many community leaders and organizers who keep the community united in many ways.

This year, I was able to participate and volunteer in many Filipino events, parties and dance presentations:

I especially dedicate this segment to Mr. Mike Canlas, our Art Director.

Annie Parson's 25th Year Anniversary.
Along with the array of selection of traditional Filipino dishes, the party also served a delightful platter of entertainment - traditional Filipino dances accompanied by a live ethnic beat.

Talking about photography … I gained many friends from my photography gigs. I appreciate all my models, volunteers and supporters. For the World Wide Web for all the inspiration, tutorials that unveil tips and tricks of this fine art. Thanks for many artists/photographer friends who have been generous in sharing their expertise in the field and whose works brought inspiration and courage for me to, at least, try.

I would like to thank my participants in my recent studio photoshoot. Thanks for your time and generous tips and compliments.

We all celebrate Christmas in many ways. The best part of it all is how many of us do it in thanksgiving for all our blessings. One of my nieces celebrated her 14th birthday today. My brother told me that all she wanted was a simple dinner and a movie date with the family. She also requested to spend the rest of her special day visiting the elderly in their neighborhood and bring them presents - a wish surely made come true by the proud parents of this young lady. This season brings a lot of heartwarming stories and the best ones are always authored by the little ones. As I was putting more presents under the Christmas tree, I saw a slight change of the positioning of the nativity scene. The wise men and the shepheds were turned toward the figures of Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus. I asked my daughter if she moved the figures. She said she did because ... "They have to see Jesus". I heard many similar stories from many families of their pure little angels doing the same. What a heavenly sent message because this season is indeed about seeing the Savior whose birth brought light to all mankind.

May we all see it just like how children do. Merry Christmas to you all!

Breaking Dawn II: The Best of the Bunch

2012-11-16T02:33:00.001-07:00

First off, let’s cut the chase. Was it good? My answer – it was a real treat! Breaking Dawn 2 is the best of the bunch. While I can’t speak for whole cinematic quality and technicalities, all I can say – the heck, I enjoyed it! The final film of the Twilight Saga fed its thirsty audience with supernatural romance, drama and some over-the-top action.

The movie opens with Bella, being transformed to her new vampire body, adjusts to her new world and discovers a unique ability to create a mind shield. The whole movie moves around the controversy on Edward and Bella’s fast-growing offspring that brought the whole gripping battle between the Volturi and the Cullens and company. While the Volturi sees the arrival of half-human half-vampire child a threat, the Cullens gather other vampires from the different ethnicities to vouch for the child. Meanwhile, (as sicko this might be in real life), Jacob imprinted (a wolf thing) on Renesmee, making Jacob Renesmee’s protector and the two destined to be soul mates in the ‘near’ future.

With all the different super powers of the vampire characters, the main attraction of the movie was the battle with the Volturi. Imagine, Bella with her newfound skill to shield other vampires; from Amazonian she-vamps, the ability to supplant intensely real visual images into the minds of others; from the Egyptian coven, comes Benjamin who can physically manipulate the elements of earth, air, fire and water and from the Denali coven, Kate can electrocute anyone who touches her. Adding interest to the new group of covens is the Romanian duo of ancient vampires, Stephan and Vladimir, sworn enemies of the Volturi. Don't ask me about the effects, I got psyched with the soap-operatic drama! There. On the other hand, it quite came a surprise, made the audience gasp, to see the violent ending of some of good the guys, starting with Carlisle. Awww, did I spoil it? Well, that and many more gave the whole story-telling part of the film a riveting twist that will make the ride all worth your angst.

The acting … Hey, I have to say Kristen Stewart emerged from her signature sulking way of acting. The versatile Michael Sheen on the other hand, unleashes quite an interesting eccentric portrayal, as we have always known him as Aro, the ominous leader of the Volturi. Meanwhile, Dakota Fanning didn’t have to speak a word to prove another great performance. She had her intense red eyes do all the speaking for her.

From the beginning to the closing credits, everything was well tied up. The happy-ending conclusion of the movie was just like a … wedding video … down to it its closing credits. Awwww, so cute. I love it! Cheers! Have fun!

Miss UN USA, Miss Asia Utah Pageant: And .. the Winner is ...

2012-11-06T15:04:00.001-07:00

I claim no expert on anything. However, as a photography hobbyist and an observant spectator, there is that factor you look for, that something you wanted to capture and hear from a stage production such as a beauty pageant. As a blogger, I speak of my opinions and can blabber on my thoughts, not worrying of an editor who can scrap my work. I intended to write a review, but forget all that! There are more to see beyond what your eyes and ears can sense.

Last Saturday’s (November 3rd)Ms United Nations and Ms. Asia pageant was a show to remember. First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the dynamic trio of Agnes Higley, Eunice Jones and Dana Rossi for producing a very successful show. Organizing such a pageant participated by relatively large number of candidates entail a long to-do list and manpower to carryout a well-coordinated event. From recruiting, campaigns, promotion, training of candidates, generating funds to rehearsals, I just can imagine how the three breathed a good sigh of relief, now that this year’s pageant is finally over. These three ladies did bring beauty pageants in Utah to a whole new level!

To all the candidates, you all are winners! Thank you for showing your heritage to Utah, and your courage for speaking out on issues the world faces today. What can be better than hearing those profound and significant views from young, talented, beautiful and elegant ladies as you all are! I would listen to you more than that guy at the White House. Pun intended.

MISS INDIA BONEETA KAUR, MS. ASIA UTAH 2012

Miss India was a charm on stage. She was graceful, eloquent and smart.

Boneeta hopes that her participation in the pageant would help inspire young girls reach their dreams and rise above the stereotype perception on women. On her platform delivery, she concluded, “It is your determination and perseverance that helps you achieve your dreams, not your gender.”

Boneeta also was proclaimed as Miss Friendship.

With 1st runner-up Sindee Ngo and 2nd runner-up Linda Ng

MISS PHILIPPINES ANDREA SOLETA, MS UNITED NATIONS USA

Andrea is one beautiful girl and doesn’t seem to know it. She has what every pageant recruiter is looking for – natural and fresh. On stage, she was graceful and had a playful spirit in her.

Andrea related how she’d been discouraged to join the contest. This instead ignited her spirit to try her chance in the pageant. Andrea strongly believes that no person is less than the other. Each one is important and is capable of reaching his/her highest potential.

Andrea also garnered Best in Gown award, Most Voted Fan Page and Best in Talent.

With runner-ups Miss Liberia Fredrica Gwyan (4^th), Miss Russia Natalia Koshkina (3^rd),Miss Nigeria Nancy Ovouba (2^nd) and

Miss Brazil Lyssa Melo (1^st)

MISS NIGERIA NANCY OVOUBA, BEST in INTERVIEW

Other than placing 2^nd in MISS UN, Nancy Ovouba won Best in Interview. Nancy also impressed the audience with heartfelt platform on addressing hunger in the world.

In her own little way, Nancy aims to bring the world to the dinner table, unite the nations through food. In her platform delivery, she stated:

“Think of a time you were hungry, truly hungry. Maybe you skipped a meal because you were running late so you were experiencing that grumpy stomach feeling. Remember how debilitating that feeling was. Can you recall all the things you tried to accomplish but didn't have the focus? Maybe you're like me who turn into a bit of a hungry monster blowing fire until food can cool your burning pit. We were the lucky few to be able to take a lunch break or send for food to get our minds back on track. Many children and families here in the US and all over the world feel that same hole in their stomachs but have no idea when or if their next meal is coming to relieve their starvation. The children, if deprived from this basic necessity, can create a dramatic crippling effect, not only on their own future but to ours as well. That is the very reason my platform means so much to me!” http://www.gofundme.com/Miss-Nigeria

I can talk nineteen to the dozen about the event, but pictures are always more fun! So here we go ...

Fundraising Day Trip to Wendover: Fun Bus Ride, Buffet, Games, and Concert

2012-10-24T13:18:00.000-07:00

Pinoy Community Pageant

From the sunny, idyllic places in the Caribbean to the cold, scenic spots in Alaska, touring the world is perhaps one of the most notable journeys one could ever experience. As I recall my cruise ship experience, what made every place worth remembering was the company of fun loving friends. It’s always the company that makes all the difference!

Indeed, you don’t have to go far or travel the world to have fun. Two Trailway buses transported fifty, fun-loving Utahns to the little get-away oasis in the western border of Utah called Wendover. Sponsored by the Kulturang Pinoy Ensemble (KPE), the daytrip fundraising effort gave the rowdy partygoers a get-away package of fun at an affordable price. For $20, attendees had a fun bus ride that came with an all-you can-eat seafood buffet, $5 cash back, a free drink coupon and a $5 discount at the Gift Shop.

The Bus Ride

The two-hour ride passed by so quickly with all the madness going on in the bus. . There’s the bingo game that was hosted by a spontaneous, naturally funny bingo caller that engaged the playing passengers. You would hear catchy Filipino shout outs, howling, jokes and laughter.

The Nugget Hotel and Casino Buffet

The bus finally arrived and we all were greeted by your-typical-casino ambience: cigarette fumes, spinning sound from slot machines … and women in revealing attires strutting the walkway. That didn't seem to bother any of us as we all headed straight to the eat-all-you-can buffet.

From fish, crabs to desserts, the buffet section offered an array of selection of seafood entrees, side dishes, meat and appetizers. The salad and dessert bar also had a decent amount of choices.

The Air Supply Concert

While some stayed at the Nugget Casino to play, a great number of attendees went to the Pepper Mill Concert Hall for the Air Supply Concert, an Australian duo famous to pop listeners for their soft rock ballads in the 80s. Do “I’m All Out Of Love”, “Lost in Love”, “The One That You Love” sound great to you? If so, you sure have missed the delight of feeling the nostalgia of the 80s.

Customer Service

The experience can’t be all that perfect. We live in an imperfect world – like in a gambling place? LOL

So … they serve crabs at the buffet. Emma, one of our friends asked for a claw cracker from one of the servers. I understand it was busy and perhaps they were out but the server just turned to her and said, NO. That’s new. Like, “No, lady! You can’t have one!” He, for sure, just meant to say, “Sorry ma’am, we are still out.” The concierge … being a resort casino, I just expected them to be more helpful and cordial. I went to the front desk to ask where the concert hall was. A pretty-faced young lady answered me with a rather long face (must be a looong day) and gave me the body-check look to start with then answered my question in a stern cadence – ATTENTION! March to that door! Hail! Just kidding, she didn’t say that but she was not the nicest either.

Here’s the very best. So big cameras were not allowed in the concert hall so I had to leave my camera stuff with security. That's very understandable, of course. After the concert, I got my stuff back. I took the camera out of my bag, had it ready to shoot the autograph session. One security came to me, telling me that I could take photos as many photos as I wanted just no video recording. Great, I was not video recording. It was a little crowded and I could not get a good shot of the artists. One security guy came again, tapping my camera strap (like, hey don’t touch my stuff … good thing I was in a good mood so no drama) and said, “Enough for you!” I said, OK and I backed away. I still took some shots from afar, but he kept blocking me! For the love of goodness, when everybody else was taking photos, too! As I kept doing my thing, the other security guy came again and said with his cute accent, “Hey, your flash is bothering the recessed lighting.” Hahahhahahahah! I had my flash turned straight to the ceiling to bounce the light. I had to turn off my flash. What an experience. The other security guy who was blocking me later came to us, being friendly and all in a chit-chatty mode. I don’t mind if I can’t shoot with my camera. They could have just said, “Ma’am sorry, we don’t allow that kind of camera even outside the concert hall.” End. Tapos. Not like hey, you can shoot, then come up with out-of-this-world inconsistent restrictions. That didn’t stop me either way. SO here they are …

Thanks, Ate Eds for this picture!

About Pinoy Pageant

From health and wellness, insurance, senior living, fighting fraud to funeral services, the Aging Expo at the Expo Center in Sandy gathered a great number of products and services, medical practitioners and health educators and experts all in one place. The free event gives seniors and those preparing to the golden age options and education to the different challenges of aging. Since we all are heading to this stage of life, I went there as well. It was an event full of education and – freebies. It’s not too late. The free event runs through until 4pm on Friday, the 5^th.

The Rose Garden Café at Salt Lake Regional Medical Center

Preparing quick and healthy meals may be a challenge at times, not only to seniors but also to everyone. The Rose Garden Café demonstrated how to prepare an affordable (.89 to 4.50 per serving), and easy meal using 8 ingredients: 1 oz. of trout, 1 dozen eggs, 1 bunch asparagus, 8 oz. container sliced mushrooms, 1 lb bag of red potatoes, a small box of Fartalle bowtie pasta, small bottle of honey, 2 medium- sized fresh lemons. The cooking demo presented ways to prepare these ingredients in bulk for easy, ready-to-cook items. The asparagus, for example, can be blanched (20 seconds in boiling water) and be refrigerated for 4 days for a week’s meal consumption. You can also create your own vinaigrette using: lemon, rice wine vinegar, honey, salt and pepper. Simmer the ingredients for a few seconds and this homemade salad dressing is good for a year! After the each meal demo, the team of presenters passed the cooked meals and they all tasted ... healthy!

What Do Women Want Revealed

2012-09-24T22:13:00.000-07:00

-->

Ms UN/Ms Asia Pinoy Community

-->

We, women aren’t really created equal – we differ in styles, needs and wants. But, what do women really want? When we get down to it, we, women ALL seek the same things in life – DEALS! How about that? We all want to be empowered within the best bang for our bucks, don’t we?

I was lucky enough to make it last minute to see the expo at the South Town Expo Center in Sandy. “What Do Women Want” is a trade show, held periodically, where vendors from all over showcase services and products relating to women – from skincare, health and wellness, food to the latest trend in home décor and so on. Afraid I would frivolously splurge and get duped by some marketers, my husband had always warned me not to go. The heck, I went there with my mommy (she keeps me grounded). I didn’t spend a penny (just as of yet). The information there was priceless and let me count the ways:

NIMA: Taking Skincare to the Next Level

For years, I have been researching for cost effective ways to minimize the appearance of my acne scars. I rely on using superficial remedies such as:

o benzoyl peroxide - controls breakouts

o milk of magnesia – controls oiliness (yes, the laxative milk of magnesia)

o concealer/foundation (high pigmented) – evens out skin and camouflages blemishes

o Oil-free moisturizer – for skin hydration as acne medication can dry out skin.

Although this method works wonder and cost effective, on the down side, they are:

o high maintenance

o superficial

o temporary as makeup wears off (even the ones that are water-proof, ect), not to mention if you have an excessively oily skin type (oil and make-up don’t blend well).

I also tried chemical peel and microdermabrasion, but after seeing the series of treatments needed to get maximum results, I was afraid I was going to break the bank. So I thought of laser skin resurfacing procedure would after all be more cost effective, hoping this method will just scrape it all off! Under the hands of certified physicians, laser skin resurfacing yields dramatic results in one treatment. At the expo, I met a cordial doctor, Dr. Jeffrey Ayers of the National Institute of Medial Aesthetics. He addressed concerns such as:

o Hyperpigmentation

o Scarring

o Cost

o Social downtime

To reduce risks of skin damage, he advised to start with less or non-invasive procedure such as photofacials, another treatment procedure that reduces the appearance of blemishes from:

o sun damage

o freckles

o age spots

o rosacea

o telangiectasia, dilated small blood vessels in the surface of your skin.

Photofacial treatment costs 150 at NIMA. Laser treatment such as CO2 Fractional Skin resurfacing and Erbium Laser resurfacing costs $1,000. Most laser resurfacing treatments costs 2,000 to 3,000. Dr. Ayers suggests seeing them for a FREE consultation to see what will work best for your type of skin.

Permanently Beautiful Defies Genetic Flaws

Don’t you like to keep a perfectly shaped eyebrows, sexy red lips, and flirty eyeliner day in and day out under any condition – may you be swimming, sweating in the gym or when you wake up in the morning with all your makeup in place? Permanent makeup gives you the answer. Just beware of unqualified people wielding needles on your pretty face. Not only that, unskilled technicians can make you look like a caricature with a well-drawn flat eyebrows. With this in mind, I asked Maria of “Permanently Beautiful” the secret to a natural looking tattoo makeup. I was worried more on eyebrow tattoo because I saw a lot of unflattering tattooed eyebrows. Maria said they go deeper into the skin using Intradermal Pigmentation procedure to mimic the appearance of hair in the brow line. Safety, she said, is one of the things they put of utmost importance in their practice. They follow strict sanitation and sterilization guidelines are followed in accordance with OSHA and the Center of Disease Control. Maria said they are certified and licensed for what they do. Should you consider this, think through it. Verify information by calling Maria or Vicky at 801-6330401.

The Magic Piano Keys: Learn the Piano in Two Months!

Another booth that caught my attention was the “Magic Piano Keys. “What’s the magic about it? ”, I asked Lela, a sweet lady from Bountiful and a pianist herself. The magic, she said, is how her method helps beginning students master the notes as little as two months using Visual, Audio, and Tactile learning methods. I learned to play piano the traditional way and I thought I just need more practice so I can better sight-read. Lela offers materials for both teaching and learning the piano. I have a great piano teacher who is also a friend and a great neighbor. I would recommend her in a heartbeat. But, if Lela’s method interests you, here’s her info: lela.c @ magicpianokeys.com; 801-292-2357.

LightHouse Health: When the Mind’s at ease, the Body Heals

No matter how great the products or services are, it will sometimes come down to how much it costs. Jenna Joyce, patient director of Lighthouse Health said they are not about the money. She said they offer free education on holistic approach in de-stressing. Kristy, one of the representatives, also said that their method relaxes the mind that in turn promotes many forms of body healing and even weight loss. This is not recommended for pregnant women. They offer FREE consultation and education opportunities for the holistic approach in health and wellness. You may reach them at 801-265-3400.

The Barefoot-Connection Presents the Marvels of the Earth

The expo was hitting to its end when I saw this product, a black pad similar to a mouse pad, except bigger. You print welcome on it, I thought it would make a good doormat! But wait, there is more to it. Simple as it may look, this foot mat, called the barefoot-connection mat is charged with energies to relieve chronic pain, allergies, constipation, PMS, food cravings, bloating, acid reflux, hot flashes, improve quality of sleep and the list goes on. This technology derives from a holistic healing approach called earthing, a method as simple as standing barefoot on the dirt. Danny, an independent distributor said the earthing pad provides a way to reconnect with the beneficial energies from the earth anytime, anywhere or in the comfort of our homes! This ‘earth-magic’ mat costs $60.00.Danny also showed me a blanket item that provides similar health benefits.

Mo ... mor... Moringa Oleifera, The Super Food
In the same booth was a healing product in a bottle called Moringa, dubbed as the nature’s perfect food. Packed with vitamins, minerals and many kinds of amino acids, Moringa Oleifera (scientific name) offers numerous healing and health and wellness capabilities. The plant sounded foreign to me, but after realizing what Moringa really was, I chuckled – it’s exactly the same plant wildly growing in our yard back home in the Philippines! I remember my mom used the plant’s little round leaves for cooking, the seeds for dad’s arthritis and its extract as antiseptic for cuts. My husband who is of German upbringing even loves the leafy vegetable in many Filipino dishes. Does malunggay sound familiar to you, guys? “Ay, Moringa Oleifera ka diyan, malunggay man lang gali”, in English, that just means - Awesome! If you want to chat with Danny, call him: 801-256-9952. He won’t mind at all!

Your Weigh Is Over: The Smart Way to Losing Weight

With so many diet pitches emerging in the market, it's hard to decide what really works or what not. Most of us end up spending in experimentation on different diet fads and trends but to unsatisfying or no results. I do believe that eating a balanced diet and keeping our weight under control should not be that complicated nor restraining. I believe that you can eat anything, just be conscientious on the amount, frequency and combination of foods you eat each day. Get more fruits and vegetable, drink a lot of water and top it all off with abundant sleep and exercise. That, to me, is basically what we need. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with patronizing weight loss products especially low calorie foods. WIO diet program (stands for Weight Is Over) offers low calories but scrumptious meal items. WiO reps call them their smart foods. One of the products I tried was their pizza and garlic bread. Their smart pizza was as good (it really was good) as the regular pizza. WIO smart pizza has 120 in calories versus mainstream pizza that has 680 in calories. The secret to WIO’s low calorie, tasty meals is its commitment to whole foods, nothing artificial but without compromising quality taste. This local diet company based in Sandy also offers diet consultations. They can be reached at 801-990-1934.

Nothing Bundt Cakes: Deliciously Good

After getting all the educational information on diet, health and wellness, de-stressing, skin care, it’s time to end the quest for “what do women want” with a tasty, i-don’t-care-what-it’s-made-of yummy cake from “Nothing Bundt Cakes”. They are so yummy, you won’t mind even if it has 1000 calories in it. I asked Cheryl, a friend of the owner, as to what makes their cake special, she simply replied, “Uuuhhh …. It’s just really good.” When something is real good, it is what it is. No further explanation needed. Call Nothing Bundt Cake for more info at 801-619-3757.

Heavenly for $25-

The next expo will be on Aging, October 3rd. Check your local paper for coupons.

KPE ABOUT ME

Some people say that women are competitive by nature like contenders out staging each other on the catwalk – like in a beauty pageant. Here in Utah, many beauty pageants are more than just a fashion show. Pageantry has become a popular method to promote a cause and venue for young women to get involved in their community.

Ms. Asia Utah and Ms. United Nations are one of these pageants. Young girls are given the opportunity to show their cultural roots and promote social awareness on cultural diversity in the community. Hopeful candidates also compete not only for the honor of winning the title but to also earn scholarship awards for college. Alisha Lee, reigning Ms. Legacy, eloquently pronounced that beauty pageants are rather a “celebration of beauty”, where women are given the opportunity to show the best version of themselves. She added that women should really not compete but aim at achieving their fullest potential.

Reigning Queens Platform

I had the opportunity to not only witness diverse beauties but also listen to eloquent young women at the Ms. Asia Utah and Ms. United Nations Presentation Night held at Red Lion Hotel.

Nilufar Sherzod

Reigning Miss Asia Utah and former Ms. United Nations, Nilufar Sherzod, articulated her platform on peace in the community amidst the issue on terrorism that puts the Muslim community in a bad light. This beauty from Tajikistan believes that education is essential in bringing people together in peace, regardless of race, color and religion. Nilufar just presented a timely reminder as the nation this year marked the 11th anniversary of the day terrorists attacked the twin towers of Manhattan's World Trade Center.

Maria Jose Turitich Asuncion

Another beauty, this year’s Ms. United Nations, Maria Jose Turitich Asuncion of Paraguay origin voiced her platform on the empowerment of young women. Raised by a single mother, Maria strongly believes in education. Maria stressed that her mother fought hard in life and never lost her desire to learn. She also expressed her deep admiration for her grandmother as she quoted her to be a great example of service.

Aside from her profound statement on beauty pageants, Alisha Lee, reigning Ms. Legacy, advocates against domestic violence. In a little chat with her, she said that she actively participates in initiatives to empower women.

Alisha Lee

Alisha, Nilufar and Maria are your typical beauty queens– beautiful, witty and confident. At the same time, they are extraordinary young women who through their appearances and active participation in community programs, inspire and motivate young women achieve their best and be an asset and pride to their community. Their beauties will surely go far!

To grace the show, Nilufar and Maria wowed the audience with their cultural dance presentation. The pageant night for both titles will be held on November 3rd at the Kearns High School Auditorium. Details later.
