2012 Thus Far

Jeff turned 25!

Jeff's long time friend, and our favorite couple to hang out with happened to be able to make it (THE BUFFINGTONS!). I don't think Jeff could have asked for a better birthday.

Ella joined the chess team, and helped break in our awesome chess set.

Sally, surprising, yet unsurprisingly, had something "off" about her face...

Which called for an emergency run to the store for Benadryl.

All we can figure is that she must have tried to love a spider to death (like usual). Only this time it tried to love her to death, back.

We've had a lot of visitors, lately. After seeing about a million wild turkeys, Jeff mentioned how when we were in Yellowstone we barely saw any wildlife. We move back home, and it's everywhere.

And then there was the whim to make a homemade cookie monster...

Now, a normal cookie monster is delicious (where we just buy everything that goes on it, and put it together). But a homemade cookie, homemade ice cream, homemade whipped cream, homemade hot fudge, and a homemade caramel cookie monster is monstrously delicious. And somehow took just about the same amount of time to make.

I've been thinking a lot about the past, lately. More specifically, the past before I was even thought of. I've been converting my grandma's songs from tapes to mp3, and just read a small book on my other grandma's family. Makes me want to move into the hills, and start a folk band honestly. It also makes me want to do a family history adventure, where Jeff and I track down old stories and places from our ancestors.-More to come on these projects in the future.

I've also been thinking about this pretty huge artistic project I've been building in my mind...oh, to be back in college, when I had all these weird connections and could pull it off...I'll have to see what I can do...

I think a lot. Too much, probably. I'm a dreamer.
Fortunately, Jeff got me a project planner for Christmas. It's been helping me keep my thoughts organized...
And I might actually get some done.

New Years

Sooooo, we really splurged for New Years/Jeff's birthday. First we walked around a little in downtown Cincy (which happens to be what we did on our first real date), before meeting up with Jeff's friends where we made reservations. We went to a Brazilian restaurant, where they come around with different cuts of meat, and it's amazingly tasty, and awesome, and yummy, and filling beyond belief. It was worth it.

Afterwards the night was still young (as in 6:45pm), so we went to see Mission Impossible. It was good...I think old people go to see movies on New Years Eve though, because we were definitely the youngest people there...and that's what my parents did too...

The guys were wanting something sweet afterwards, so as tradition for Jeff's birthday (or so it seems to be becoming), we suggested a cookie monster. At the pizza place back in Idaho, they had a little cast iron skillet with a freshly cooked giant cookie on the bottom, ice cream in the middle, and whipped cream, pecans, caramel and hot fudge on the top; which they referred to as a cookie monster....and what I like to recreate for Jeff...and his friends...at 1am on New Years. Makes me miss it just typing about it.

So, we rang in the New Years well fed, watching the modern Sherlock BBC series. We tuned in 10 sec. before the ball dropped...or in our case, before the fountain square sign flashed HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I leaned over and gave Jeff a kiss. :)

We are getting quite old though, because we had to roll down the window and sing as loud as we could the hour ride home at 2am to keep from falling asleep, where apparently my little sister (who got in a half hour after us) had a pleasant, non-groggy drive home...odd what a difference a few years can make...or is it marriage.?...We did see a movie on new years eve....

We did happen to save my triple chocolate moose cake from the restaurant, so on New Years day Jeff and I ate it with some sparkling wild berry we were supposed to be home in time to break open the night before. I was much happier with how our plans ended up.

And now today. The day resolutions arrive. We made goals.

Our Christmas

The week after Thanksgiving I was on a mission to find a Christmas tree out in the wild. While Jeff was at work, I got the desire to hunt it down. My dad pulled in the driveway curious of what I was up to with a saw in my hand. I explained, and he joined me. After scouring the property from one end to the other, we found it. The one and only sorta Christmas tree.

It turned out exactly how I wanted it. :)

The days leading up to Christmas were warm and fun with my niece, nephews, and sister here.

Then came Christmas morning.

Jeff and I opened gifts from each other, and enjoyed our first Christmas together.

After Sally got her gifts (including the ham bone), we didn't see her much the rest of the day.

It was beautiful outside, with a thick layer of frost and the sun rising over the trees.

There was even a doe enjoying the morning rays.

Next was church, where Jeff and my brother-in-law, Phil both had talks. The talks were perfect in keeping the day in perspective.

Then was the chaos of kids; what makes the day feel like Christmas the most.

For the afternoon Jeff and I went to his side, for a great meal and more kid chaos. It was great! And my mother-in-law made us something I'll soon share. I love it. I love Christmas.

Oh, these girls are adorable.

We are sad to not get to see everyone, but Jeff just got on four 10s at work, meaning...LONG WEEKENDS! The list of mini adventures is growing in my mind.

Next is New Years, and Jeff and I have some VERY special plans in Cincy.

Speaking of Giving Thanks

With my whole family in town (minus Miranda), we put together a rather wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Wednesday the adults decided to go shopping, while my mom and I watched the kids. So, we did what usually happens when I'm around kids. We painted.

And then we went to see the new Muppet's movie.

Thursday being Thanksgiving, we went to my aunt's to stuff ourselves.

^ 4 generations. I love listening to my grandma play piano, and it's really fun to see each generation carry on the interest.

After being so full, Jeff and I ran over to Jeff's parents house for a little while. Jeff's mom went to Kentucky, so we brought some food for his dad...and had a bright idea to surprise his mom.

We put up their Christmas decorations! Jeff said it best. You know when kids wake up early to make their mom breakfast for Mother's Day? That's about how well we did... :)

Friday my family decided to do something a little different compared to the normal Black Friday tradition (and something I hope we continue to do every year). We decided to do a little service project. We went to the church and mulched around the building and trees. All the kids had their job, and they were great! my favorite to watch was Brennen. His job was to look after his baby brother.

This was the perfect service project. The boys got to play in dirt, and it took the exact right amount of time (before the kids lost interest).

And a family weekend wouldn't be complete without a hike.

There was a presenter from the Cincy Zoo, and trolly, a bouncy slide (that was the coolest one I've EVER seen!...and funniest to watch), free samples up and down the streets, the BEST parade ever (and I'm not really a parade kind of person)...AND

TubaChristmas! I went to one in DC a couple of years ago with a friend, so I was excited to have one in my home town. Jeff and I were kind of herded into our old historic theater not totally sure what was going on. Once we were inside we were deciding where we wanted to sit. There was an open door not saying we couldn't enter. So we entered. It lead to box seats overlooking the performance! I called Mindy, and told them to come on over for a TubaTastic time, because we got the best seats in the house.

We were so close, when the conductor announced The First Noel to be the next song, Ella let out a "YAY" to get a reply "One of my favorites too" from the conductor.

When I was little, my dad would always say "Remember this moment right now. Don't ever forget it." usually when we were just spending time together. And I always remembered (even though he might not. haha) So, I was sure to tell the kids who were there with us to always remember this experience...We will see how long it lasts.

I'm not sure how I didn't hardly get any pictures of the babies, but they were beautiful and adorable. Thanksgiving gave me some wonderful traditions I want Jeff and I to implement into our family. Being together. Service. Free fun!

Rain Come Snow

It has been raining buckets here...and the drops are finally turning to flakes (for now). It's a good day to snuggle up by the fire with Sally, and blog.

I have a lot of joy in my heart right now. Although our circumstances aren't ideal (whose are?), I'm grateful for so much. A place to live, food to eat, WORK! I am so proud of Jeff every morning...even if I am grouchily saying "turn off the light! and pack your own dang lunch!" every other morning.

We are making things work here in my lil' ol' home town. At church Jeff is a counselor for Sunday School, and I'm Second Counselor in Primary...dun dunn duuuunnnnn. We. Are. Getting. Old.

I've been thinking of some ideas on what traditions I want to create with my family as it grows. This past month or so have been good idea builders.

A Teenie Halloweenie Bit Late

I worked on Halloween, so when I got home Jeff was awesome and made the most perfect sugar cookies from scratch for us to decorate.

We celebrated the best way we could think of. Went to Frisch's Big Boy, where there were the cutiest costumes (the little skunk was my favorite). We listened to Dracula (excellent book) on tape, and decorated the cookies.

To Kentucky We Go

Jeff and I really got to see the beauty of Fall last month, when we went to Kentucky. Our first stop was Jeff's grandparents' house. It was great to spend some time with them...and be serenaded by Jeff's grandpa on the karaoke machine. It was awesome.

Then we were off to Jeff's sister's family. They had been talking about this festival since Jeff and I got married, so we were sure to go...and these two drove with us to

Hippie'n Out

A few weeks ago Jeff and I went to the hippie-est place in all Ohio. Yellow Springs. We went to their annual street fair, and it was a pretty good time. It was interesting to be around more authentic hippies (you could say), and we got some local honey to say we at least go something.

nostalgia, rambles, and goals

I had a dream last night that just hit me. It involved the ocean and one of my closest friends. And I can't shake it. Can I just say I had the best college experience. I wouldn't change it for the world. Here's a little of why as soon as high school was over my life was awesome:

Worked on an island, made the greatest friends, and got the best tan I will ever have.
Had fun, and sometimes interesting roommates everywhere I went.
Went to an art enriched trip to London
Took an amazing, enlightening philosophy trip to China.
Flew anywhere in the country I had (or could make) a friend, just about every month.
Got the best education for me, that I would never replace.
(typical school day: scuba class, teach an art lesson, teach riding, unwind in the ceramics studio; weekend: fly to Utah to hang out with friends, or drive to an art museum in a neighboring state)
Had the most perfect job in the beautiful Appalachian hills, as a horseback riding instructor.

Since graduating, life has kind of changed. I can't fly anywhere on a whim anymore (lost my parents' flight benefits, for being too old). Haven't gone horseback riding for almost two years. My friends are getting married and starting their own lives, making it more challenging to get together or go on a spontaneous trip. And worst of all, I can't see the ocean whenever I want (again almost two years ago). This is all very very hard for a free spirit like mine.

As much as I so greatly miss my college years, I have to remember what's ahead. For me, it's hard to think things could ever get any better than they were then...but when I'm realistic, they sure can. The only difference is we just have to make a little more money to go on a trip, and work with a schedule (makes my free spirit cringe). I just need to remember a few things.

I've gotten to see the island on THE best trip to the island in 2009.
I've seen beautiful parts of the country this past summer.
I learned so much of what happens in the business world, and the non-profit.
I got to experience the behind the scenes of an art museum.
I got to learn more of what I love and what I don't love in work.
I got to see how okay Oregon is.
I've met great people.

I married a hottie. And that's what brings me comfort. He's hoping to go to school for linguistics next year, and get certified to teach English as a second language (which most definitely implies we will travel the world together). I've become more of an introvert and he likes to be around people, so he makes me get out of the house. He is so creative with words, and I think we make a good creative duo. He's kind, corny, and nerdy. I hit the jackpot.

Today Jeff started his first day of work. We will still be poor, but at least now we can save a little to hopefully see the ocean soon.

Be more diligent in reading scriptures, praying, and serving others (will never be crossed off) Really have improved!

Hoping for the future is how I can beat back painful nostalgia.

We've been back for almost three months, which means I've got three months to catch you up on. Now that we've got a set schedule, goals, plans, and hopes I feel things will start moving (including my typing).

Rain Rain

Oh, the cold rain.

I just want to cuddle up in a warm blanket in front of the fireplace.

The past few weeks have been in the high 70's, beautiful fall weather (pictures to come)! But this week has been dreary (but at least not snowy!).

Things are coming together for Jeff and I. We've had some goals we really wanted to accomplish this year back home, but as each month passed they seemed farther and farther from ever being achieved. Well, I think they are finally going to be in our reach. Hopefully later this week we will know.

Our Goals For October 2011-2012

Be more diligent in reading scriptures, praying, and serving others (will never be crossed off)
Find meaningful work (or any work at all)

Pay off Jeff's student loans
Create a realistic and obtainable budget (including investments and savings)
Eat healthily and exercise more
Create a side business (i.e. Etsy Shop) as a hobby and to help us be more creative

Within each goal there are specifics, and I've got different papers with different ideas and elaborations scattered around. So, to stay organized and managed I'm creating a "life book"....I need to think of a better name. Since I've been busy with different jobs and projects I've needed a more time efficient way of doing things. I want to get a meal plan, and shopping list made for each week. I want to keep track of each of our goals' progress. I want to keep up on my online class, or anything new I've learned. I want to keep each of my jobs organized. I want to hold myself accountable to following through on good ideas. That's what this book will help me do. Categorize and organize responsibilities, without micromanaging my life.

This weekend, Jeff and I are heading across the river to Kentucky. We're excited to spend time and have fun with Jeff's side of the family.

The Great Move

So, two months ago Jeff, Sally and I moved from Idaho to Ohio.

A couple of weeks before we had two yard sales, sold all our furniture to the guy moving in after us, dropped off at least three loads of stuff to DI, and left several boxes of useful things behind...and still we were stuffed to the brim. But we were able to fit the most important things (including ourselves).

On our way out of town we cashed in on a very important card:

AND then we were off!

We drove all day, and when it got dark we looked for a place to stay...a cheap motel in WY.

On our way to the room, the manager said we were getting the most comfortable bed in the place. He knew because he said he always takes his afternoon naps there on his cleaning rounds. Classy.

We finally made it to our first site. And it was awesome:

Naturally we were excited to find the Ohio flag.

No pets were allowed, so we found a monument for Sally to get to enjoy too.

Our next stop was going to be Omaha, but we were too excited to get home (and/or listen to our books on tape).

So we went straight to the stop after that; Nauvoo. We stayed at a beautiful campground looking out on the Mississippi River. Once across the river we already felt at home. The air was moist, the crickets were chirping away...and it was GREEEEENNNN. AWWW, HOME.

After a decent nights rest, we enjoyed the Nauvoo Historic Site very much, and can't wait to stay longer next year.

After a wonderful day, we were on the road one last time. Home was so close we could hardly stand it. We got in late, and crashed in bed. The next couple of days we were busy visiting family. We were greeted with lots of love, green beauty...and lightning bugs.

And then the fun was over:

I feel like we're still unpacking. Despite job searching, deep cleaning, unpacking, and constantly having things that need to get done, it is sooooo sweet to be home.

Home Again, Home Again

Home in Idaho

So, we're back in Ohio. It's really great.

I've been staying really busy making the basement into a home, and getting started in three different jobs. On Saturdays I'm helping out on a farm, with their fall festivities. I'm babysitting two handsome little boys a couple days a week...AND I finally got an art teaching gig. It's part time this year, which really works out perfectly for Jeff and I to get settled in and comfortable.

I've got tons of project ideas, and have lots to share. Now that we have most of our living situation arranged (i.e. an actual OFFICE space), I'll have more time. Ah, yes. Time. Considering I've got to leave at 6am, I believe it's time for bed.

Coming up: The Move (as promised), the new pad, latest finds, projects, and goals to leading to a more organized life.

Family Vacation

My parents and little sister came into town our last weekend in Idaho. I still had a few things to do on my list before we moved, and I was going to check the rest off. First we went to see Mesa Falls, since it was on the way to where we were staying.

Then we checked into our cabin...which was a little questionable. The reason for not staying in our house was so we could have enough space to stretch out, and have a place to take a shower (rather than only a bath at our house). In the cabin...both of these were questionable.

Walking up to the cabin was a little iffy. A support beam was cracking in the middle, making the door hard to open. It was a decent size, but was not an invitingly clean facility. And the moment Jeff sat on the bed, it plopped down through the frame, and onto the floor. We didn't sleep as comfortably as we thought, and the shower was a makeshift drum thing that barely had room for one. But we were at least and hour closer to our destination. We also stayed there because they provided kayaking for a decent price. When we checked in I asked how we go about going kayaking. She said to get ready and come on up, and they'll take you down the river. SO, we quickly got in our swim suits, applied sunscreen, and waddled up to get going. That's when we were told "Oh, we only have four kayaks (there's five in our party), and two are already out". What? Why didn't you tell us this in the first place? After debating what we should do, and having the front desk and the guys loading up the boats misinform us, we finally decide to get a raft and be done with it. My family's team work abilities are definitely not our strong point, but we made it down the shallow river, and enjoyed the gorgeous scenery. It was beautiful.

We were done early enough to go check out Yellowstone, before calling it a night. We saw Old Faithful go off around 9:30pm. We went to the Paint Pots and saw quite a few holes with steam coming out of them. And we saw lots of elk.

The next morning we headed the other way around Yellowstone, and it was amazing.

I thought Yellowstone was breathtaking...

and then we went through the Tetons.

I recommend them both.

We stopped in Jackson Hole, WY and walked around a bit.

And then we were back on our way to Idaho.

Awesome family vacation.

But I guess any family vacation is a success if everyone comes out alive.

Mesa Fallin' + Update

The week before we moved across the country Jeff and I, and our good friends, Seve and Jules, went camping near Mesa Falls.

I think every one's favorite part was dinner; steak, tinfoil veggies, and King Salmon straight from Alaska.

The next morning we went to the Falls.

...Just MAYBE

Jules' baby is due soon, and we are sad to miss meeting him! Good luck with moving and growing your family!

I was lucky enough to have my parents and sister visit us a few days before we moved. We all went all through Yellowstone, and the Tetons. It was awesome.

Then Jeff and I tried to make it a fun trip back home, which was an adventure.

Lot's of pictures on the way of our trip with my family, the road trip home...and maybe of the new place (my parents' basement, which I think we will affectionately call The Pool House) if I can ever get unpacked. Who on earth knew you could get sick of cleaning and cleaning and packing and unpacking after doing it so many times? Before we moved, my office moved (which was a two month ordeal on its own). We are crossing our fingers that the next place we move will be for a longer period of time. I like change, but I think I'm ready for instead of an address change, it just be a picture frame.

I'm also free from my previous job! I will miss it, but I was ready to be done. So what does this mean, other than little money? (well not that I made much in the first place)....I can make money doing other things! I was restrained by being a VISTA to not have any other income, but not any more! Nope, I can do whatever I want! And I'm ready...Now all we need is for Jeff to find a job. (Keep him in your prayers).

It's a good feeling being home. I think Jeff is stressed with the job search, but we know things will come together. Just, hopefully sooner than later.

Seeing old friends, holding my baby nephew, swimming in my childhood pool, walking on my old horse trails, and feeling the always sticky Ohio air has given me a new wave of contentment. I have a sweet loving husband, and loyal and cute as all get-out dog, and to be where our roots are makes everything okay.

An Adair Affair

We did a little mini-farmers market exchange at work the other day. The boss lady gave me a dozen eggs, and I gave her one of my self proclaimed famous rhubarb pies. I make pancakes with the eggs, and they were good. :)

Boise Weekend

Jeff and I are working on getting to see more of this state, before moving. This past weekend we explored Boise, Idaho...and getting there was not easy. We got out a couple hours later than desired, and the drive was a couple hours longer than realized (due to construction, and the fact that you have to drive clear around the wilderness to get anywhere). Our camp site wasn't in the GPS, and once we finally at least found Lucky Peak State Park, finding an open camp site was another story. After looking all over in the dark we found it. The one and only open area. We nabbed it, and tried to get some sleep (amongst the boisterous tweenagers walking through every 10min and what we call little chirpers scurrying around our tent).

But when we woke up...Now that is a different story. The sun came up over the hills, and gleamed on the lake. Our site overlooked the beautiful scenery. We even had a dock to play on. It was a gorgeous morning.

Later, we put together lunch, and explored the place.

We went to the rose garden, and zoo. We wanted to ride the swan pedal boats, but they were a bit of a ripoff.

I think Boise's my favorite city in Idaho if I had to pick.

After our adventures, we headed over to a reception for Jeff's old roommate.

It was lovely.

My man's a college graduate now!

Friday, Jeff graduated with a degree in Communications, and his parents came all the way to Idaho for the grand event.

(Wish I got more pictures with Jeff and his parents...But here's pictures of our friend, Seve, also graduating!)

We celebrated with a little dinner with the Buffington's, and called it a night.

The next day we had a little cookout of freedom.

(SO sad Jeff's mom couldn't join us. She was stuck in a hospital for a couple of medical issues. I'm grateful she was able to watch her son walk at graduation though!)

I gave free modeling lessons at the cookout. Here are my Hottt modelz.

It's VERY exciting to be moving on to the next stage in our lives, but kind of sad too.Now that Jeff doesn't have school he actually has time for things...which means we are able to make more memories. Which also means...more things to say goodbye to.

Friday and Saturday we had a rather successful yard sale, with the rest of the weekend filled with

patriotic bike rides and barbeques,

parades (I call this^ America!)

and lazy dayz.

And to top it off, friends and fireworks.
