Perusing Design

The economy has been getting from the usually bad to the predictable worse. The gas prices keep rising, electricity, water, taxes. And here I was last week, buying frozen yogurt at $3.60 the small cup.

85 cents additional toppings. I had two.

I feel like I should be more austere with my purchases, even if they're once in a while treats like those. Besides, I need to keep saving for graduate school....

Economic-crisis wise, I feel like I'm in a bubble, you know? Thankfully the way my dad manages finances has prevent us from noticing any change in our lifestyle. Not that my lifestyle is the least bit luxurious. Not by a long shot, but still, we have food, water, light and internet. And there are people that have half or less.

But back to the topic that brought the yogurt!

Rosie, a very dear friend of mine was visiting us last week. She used to study here but transferred northeast to study visual communications and produce!

We don't see her that often anymore so its always great when she does get to come. So, she told me she was leaving for a student exchange to Argentina this august! Those few times have automatically turned into indefinites until january, which will be when she gets back to Puerto RIco. :( I will miss her terribly. Even if I already didn't saw her that often, its different when you know there won't be any possible way I'll see her in the next 5 months or so.

Does Anybody have cash for an airline ticket?

I really hope she has fun and protects herself.

A Sweet Highlight

Last Friday I spent most of the day with my mother in San German, since my brother and me decided to spend Thursday night there. Although a fast day I just wanted to recall how much I enjoyed that extra time with her. My brother went to work early, so it was just she and I.

The governor had declared a no tax day on account of classes starting soon, so we went ahead and bought what we needed plus some treats. When we got back I made coffee to enjoy with the chocolate and roasted nuts we had bought.

For some few minutes I noticed, but didn’t comment, that neither of us had turned on the television right away. And that’s something to be noticed in that house.

Although mostly trivial stuff, we talked without looking at the TV, or pausing when the commercial had ended. We recalled how nice it had been to spend the day just us. And how good the chocolate was.

Soon, the daily routine crept up once we noticed the hour. The TV was on, I got ready and a little while later I was on my way to my dad’s house.

Those few minutes were the highlight of my day.

A little regret at 7:23 pm

Something I've learned with a lot of stubborn resignation over the past few months (or years) is that, in order to stop being lonely you have to make yourself available. For you to stop being unsuccessful you have to start working at making yourself successful. And keep working. Just like you have to keep the availability.

Taking a moment to explain the painfully obvious, it has taken me quite some time to realize that waiting for that magic opportunity to happen or that sexy superman lookalike mailman to come to your doorstep asking for a glass of water wont probably happen anytime soon.

Its imperative for me to say out loud that if i don't take the first step, at anything, theres no valid reason to keep complaining over the empty pockets we leave behind in our lives. Just as theres no point to "like" those "forever alone" memes over at 9gag. Because I, at least, didn't try everything I could.

Man, you don't know how many times I've declined going out with my friends, putting art and the university first. Ironically, during those days I end up doing 30% of what I had planed to accomplish that day. Whereas if I had gone with them in the first place, I'm sure I would have ended up doing at least 75% of the work in a shorter amount of time.

We draw energy from those around us. We get inspired by them.

I wish I could clone myself to be out all the time with my friends while making art at the same time. But even if there might be the technology to do that these days, there's no money here for that.

I have to force myself to make a balance. An imperfect one, for sure, but one either way and have the "chore" become "fun" again.

Unnerving feelings at 1:30 am

I feel stumped. I keep hearing, reading all these news (or gossip) about past schoolmates progressing in their lives. Taking definite steps toward their paths to adulthood, becoming full professionals in their area of study.

At least that's how I read it, from a avid facebook spectator.

Me, I don't think I'm making much progress. No matter how much I do, I keep thinking there has to be something else, or I have to do something extra for this thing to happen. But I don't know what I have to do better , or when its going to happen.

I guess I need to organize myself. Get more focused on a few things, and not a list of things to do. Manage my time more simply, and define my goals better and realistically. I feel like I keep exploring different ways to do art, different mediums without doing much of anything at all. And I know I'm still young and will hopefully have plenty of time to settle on a specific style, but I feel that if I don't take any distinct route right now, I'll have nowhere to go forward to a Master's Degree.

And if I don't go anywhere I will get stuck here. And there's nothing that scares me so much than finding myself wound up in here throughout my youth.

Or any time for that matter.

Oh, lord. How much time has it been sicne I've posted here? How shameful lol. Well, omiting retales of quickly made up excuses let's just jump to the reason for this post.

Given that Sunday is Father's Day and the 29th my dad's birthday I decided to make a little something thinking of him. Although not a complete portrait of my brother and me, I'd say these characer resemble us somewhat.

This was donde with watercolors, which its a medium that I've grown to love very much, along with gouache. I know I have a lot ahead of me to become a real watercolor artist, but again. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Oh Lord.

I cannot believe vacations have come and went and I have left this poor blog abandoned. I had such high hopes for winter!

I didn't waste my time (per se), because i cleaned my quasi "studio" started posting more artwork on my facebook, got upgraded on the ComputerVerse (It starts with a M..... :D ), spent time with the family and ate a ton of pig, but you know m-... well, I know me: I could have done more.

Hopefully this semester will be full of CONTINUOUS BLOG UPDATES and self development as an artist. I have a year and a half to graduate (IF, a graduate schools accepts me, of course) so the countdown starts ~~today!~~ next wednesday, when university starts.

I hope to document as much as I can here, from what I'm doing on my classes, to my daily life, to my beautiful city of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. I have no witty way to say goodbye so..... .. . . ..

Illustration Friday's Teacher

A storm was supposed to come to Puerto Rico yesterday, but it never ´fully´ came. The governor, as a safety measure, gave free-labor day since wednesday as well as no school, practically for a few winds and light rain. And although I kind of needed the rest and time to do some artwork, it pretty much seems like a bad decision and a big waste of time, considering that we're going to have to substitute those days, either on a holiday or at the end of semester. So, no show for Isaac (the storm).

In my Human Figure class we're analyzing first the fundamentals of the human figure (i.e. BONES!!!!) So the image is pretty self explanatory. I used Corel Essentials again, but I think next time I'll use Inkscape. I didt't like two things while I was drawing:

How the background image, being taken with a camera and not a scanner didn't have a glossy background (although that can be because of the color of my cheap sketchbook) and

The fact that when I colored I kept going over the lines.

With all this schoolwork I need to find time to keep practicing digital work. Can you believe I forgot to make a duplicate of the background? Maybe that could have helped me in keeping the image lines clean. I found this article on the essential tools artists should always keep, but I found the comment section much more interesting (And almost everybody listed a MacBook Pro!! hmmmm...)

Any comments, criticisim or insight is greatly appreciated.

Helloooooo

College Started...

I'm trying to squeeze in a quick post before going back to life for a moment. I will keep posting wathever I can come up with, plus progress on my studio assignments, photos of anything that inspires me or posts from around the web. I just need to organize myself to cope with the addition of Schoolwork. But you know, it's not really schoolwork per se that keeps me from doing art, because in my assignements I do, well, art.

It's more about the going to the university, and the free hours in between classes, plus the traffic coming from the University. I shouldn't complain. In between the classes I've managed to get a job at the Computer Center, and my dad bought me a car so I don't have to wait that much. But wouldn't it be so cool if I could get all my studio classes in my room? lol

I should go back to homework. I need to draw a composition of wasted materials for monday.

Let me at least leave this:

Digital! It took me a while in PS Elements, which doesn't have the pen tool, so I guess it could have lookedsmoother. But I had this idea sketched in a notebook from my previous school year, when I was taking a cinema class and I did a Research Essay on the Mod scene in England, its influence on movies and the rest of the world. Have some other sketches that I drew around that time, so hopefully I'll gain speed in photoshop and do them too.

Illustration Friday's Lonely

And I was saying in the last post how I haven't had the time for any drawing lately...

At least my dad didn't want to do anything extensive.

So yeah, lonely. I've come to realize that loneliness, meaning those few rare moments of absolutely no outside stimulation, aren't a bad thing at all. Can even be necessary; like a small forgetable reset button. Like sleeping, but awake. I can only speak for myself but there have been times where I feel anxious for no apparent reason. This when I'm in the Family Room with 3 open Tabs in Goggle Chrome, attempting to watch 2 channels at the same time (or attempting to hear them) flipping to the ohter one every time I hear a commercial break and cooking?

The few times where I realize that all these noises are keeping me from completing a decent thought I mute the TV or stop flipping through the tabs every few sentences and finish the darn article. And I feel much more present. My head clears and I'm able to reach that inspiration I've searching for in Google Images. Heck, a few times I've even written a poem!

And it's so soothing hearing nothing. Just plain doing nothing seems so odd these days. So out of place. I constantly think to myself throughout the day: Ok, what will I do today?, What do I need?, Can I do something else while I wait for this?, Will I have time to fit this in too?. I didn't realize that you can get a mental burnout pretty quickly this way.

Recap of the End

These past few days have gone by flying, as opposed to the start of summer vacations where I was sure I was going to become wonder artist ready to:

become a professional cartoonist in two months
paint 10 + impressionist paintings (my favorite art style)
master all the existing digital art softwares programs servicing Windows and Apple
Buy a MAC
Be loved by the heads of all the Universities I'm interested in applying to for my masters (via e-mail)

Well, I haven't completed any of that during vacations. I have read a lot about cartooning, and have attempted to do a few, which I've edited a bit in programs like Photoshop elements and Corel painter essentials, which consequently have made me practice drawing on the tablet. It seems most of the heads o Departments I've ben trying to communicate with are taking their vacations now, so I haven't made much progress there. much these past few days. So yeah, particularly these past couple of day I haven't done practically anything. Although I'm talking about a couple of days, including le weekends I get neurotic because I feel I'm so behind on my artistic career. If that makes sense, even though I'm studying so technically I'm at par? But I don't feel like it.

Mostly this hold up its due to the load of errands I've been running with my dad. The doctor took his cast off and since the custom made soles finally arrived he wants to make up for those two months of resting this week. I shouldn't get annoyed though. It was a pretty serious injury, and I have no problem helping him. It's just that then I don't have enough time for drawing and/or painting, although I'm suspecting that could partially be an excuse itself.

I'll just blame time.

Also, I don't want to miss the Olympics! I wasn't interested enough in sports to watch the ones in Beijing and what a thump on the head I deserve for that. Well, this time around I'm full on: Boxing, Gymnastics, Football, Swimming, Fencing, Weighlifting, etc. So I think wanting to watch the biggest sport competition in the World, which takes place every 4 years its perfectly excusable. :]

My mood towards the start of College has been pretty bleak. It can be odd to fell this way at first comparing myself to other semesters. This one I'm deep into my core classes, no basic shenanigans, so as an artist I should be happy, right? In truth, I'm terrified! I have 3 studio courses, I'm starting my thesis this year, will take the third part of history of art and French?! Which I haven't taken in a year?! Comprenez-vous?
I have no idea how I will make it through the days. I have a few things going for me though, like the fact that my dad finally bought a car for my use, so I won't have to depend on my brothers schedule to realign my schedule. And my class schedule leaves Fridays Free!! I have a day to sleep!

All in all I don't want to sound selfish, I love what I'm studying and I'm very excited for my studio courses (Study of the Human Figure, Advanced Drawing and Sculpture).

I'm not sure if this has aired internationally. Although originally aired for the Centro American games of 2010 that took place in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico (My hometown!) it's such a beautiful commercial that I thought I'd shared it here to anybody that has develop this sudden interest in sports and the Olympics.

They say one of the benefits of digital art is that you get the work done faster, right?

4+ Hours?

Really?

I mean, I shouldn't complain. I don't know the standard time of Digital work. Plus I'm sort of really new into this (can you tell?), but I do notice a time difference with traditional media. Well, technically, it takes me longer to draw a portrait or a human figure with say, charcoal or paint, but at least the end results end up, realistic.

(Sorry for shamelessly promoting my work by the way :D)

Anyways, I couldn't figure out what to illustrate for this weeks topic, until I turned on the TV and BAM In ma' face!

The university starts in less than two weeks, and I'm dreading every single hour that slips away from my callous hands. Hopefully I'll try to treasure the time left practicing digital art as much as I can. To see if I can find the time to do something quick between future assignments.

Attempt at my first cartoon. Although I used watercolor in this one too I didn't struggle that much, in comparison with the one below. Maybe this one didn't require so much blending of colors? I barely remember, I finished so late. My ass was hurting from sitting on the floor so long, though.

Not to undervalue my own work, but I don't know about this one.

I like the idea, but I guess I haven't really gotten the hang of watercolor yet. Anywho, I remember when I used to play, always the one picking. I never learned how to make one of those paper thingies.

But, bleh. Maybe I should have edited a little bit. I wonder what is the general public's opinion regarding editing of artwork..

Museum of Art of Ponce

A group of friends and I went to see the exhibition titled: From Greco to Goya: Masterpieces from the Museum El Prado in Spain. we didn't want to waste such great opportunity to see works from such amazing artist during the times of the Renaissance to the Romanticism. Although the exhibition presented a general presentation of the movements (they can't import all of the paintings), it portrayed the custom paintings of the Royal Times, from Portraits to Still Life. Although we couldn't take pictures, so as not to damage the paintings, when the tour ended we were free to roam the Museum where we could take pictures (without flash) of as much paintings as we wanted. Sadly my camera had a pretty full memory, but I managed to capture the first paintings that really impressed me:

There aren't a lot of art stores where I live. In fact the only store that seems to have almost all the materials I need for my classes is more of a business supply store that supplies some of the things they know the art students at my campus will definitely use. Most of the time I end up buying online, at dickblick or daniel smith.

This drawing I sketched first on paper and colored on Photoshop.

I still don't feel I manage digital art well. Or at least it doesn't seem anything like some of the works I see on the internet. It was inspired on all the things I keep buying during classes in order to have the right brush, or the best quality paints, or the biggest selection of colored pencils while not actually doing anything with them. It seems I've kept forgetting that you can do art with just about anything, whether it's backed up by a big name or not.

I've suddenly been having these crazy-ass depressing pangs every time I look at the calendar. July? JULY? MOTHER EFFING JULY? Where's June? And why wasn't I there??!

Looks like getting my first job has played a bittersweet trick on me, giving money on one side and ticking time bomb on the other. I'm seriously terrified at my classes next semester.

I guess that's why I didn't have such a hard imaginative block making this week's illustration. Constantly, writing, drawing, even if it's just doodling have made me feel king of burned out lately.

(Doodling at 1:45 am has nothing to do with it, of course)

I had a literature professor once that told us that the worst thing you could do is turn that thing you love, whether its a job or something more meaningful, into a profession. Guess, I'm a few years late to follow that advice.

I really have to work on my timeliness.

At least it still Friday! So, this post was kind of inspired on last Sunday; the heat was unbearable! We were burning up, but my cat always so cool and collected stayed pretty chill. I wonder how she does it, with all that hair and weight she carries/lounges/sprawls around.

I kind of wanted my cat to look a little bit more "comicky"?, without her loosing all her "bitchassness". I think I nailed at least one of the two. Also, I loved drawing this one!! I used the waxy crayon. Kind of a little to get used to at first, (on all the feature pens, for that matter), but once I got the hang of it, I get waxingand waxing and waxing. I think I used up half an inch of my nib XD

Medical Trip and Ecological Irkings

Helloooo!

What a long trip that was yesterday!
Let's provide some short insight-while-keeping-it-entertaining info about what I'm talking about:

My dad has had pain in his feet for quite a while now, probably because he isn't 20 and he has flat feet (guessing that's the correct terminology). He has tampered it with those ankle support thingy's for a few months now:

So here's the ironic part: had some really deserving vacations coming up, for three weeks, right? But just that weekend before he started them, the Company goes and announced a small reunion and baseball game.

He's not twenty.

Play he does (first base); ends the day. Noting that nothing happened during the game (twisted ankle, etc) he still wakes up with a swollen foot the size of an enlarged softball! (Which I tried to get the picture, but couldn't)

Summing it all up, the appointment left us with leg numbing, 5 hour-long flat asses from the waiting room plus the knowledge that my dad has a swollen tendon, and he'll be using a cast for a month or so. And probably another one for who knows how long.

All the while, I'm thinking here that DNA has gifted me with some big flat feet.

We were dreading the worst-surgery-, so I guess we should be glad it didn't come to that....

Now for the Irking part!!:

While we were getting to Cayey, we passed a town named Santa Isabel, which has recently been in the local new due to a construction of windmills the government was planning to do. Now, I'm all for Ecological energy, but the site where the windmills were going to be built is (or was?...) supposed to be one of the most fertile ground of the planet. The planet.

There have been numerous protests against this, not at the windmills per se, but at the chosen location. That's fertile soil extremely good for harvesting locally grown food products. I think the governor didn't think it was good to harvest le money if stayed intact so:

Now when has any government payed attention to the people? :D

Those wee things there? Those are the wind mills, and I swear although we were driving it was already very windy outside and those things wouldn't move...

(I couldn't get better pictures because we were passing by, sorry.)

As a last note, those things look more decorative than useful. Like those really modern chairs that leave your ass whining?

It's almost 1:00am over here and for the past like- 45minutes I've been trying to resize my darn image so I can upload it as a thumbnail without it gettting all distorted and boxy (which at first was kind of cool, since it reminded me of a pixeled painting I did in a course). After giving up on my inferior knowledge of photoshop I went to the only other option: Google!

Whooo!! Finished on time!

It wasn't as much as the time it took me to finish this illustration, as the time I waited for my computer to "de-freeze".

Oh lord, I'm an impatient person, I kept clicking away out of frustration, which didn't help my poor HP at all. Plus, I kept insulting her, yelling out "I want a fucking MAC!" everytime it freezed up. At least with the job I got at my University I can start doing some serious savings to help the "Buy Angie the 15" MAC" fund.
It may be wise to add that while I was drawing, I noticed a slight burnt smell, to find out that it was indeed my poor laptop...

So yeah, this was the first thing that came to mind when I read this week's theme. Don't know why, but I went with it, although I now wish I would have added a little bit of humor in this drawing, some way. It also looks a little rough, don't you think?

Off to exercise! Laying on the floor 2+ hours really tires you out!

I've actually had it for a few weeks now, but haven't used it because of College and life, so now that I'm on vacation, I get to play with it full on! Well, not that "full"; I got a job at the University (First!) which keeps me out of the house 3+ hours everyday, counting Mayaguez'z traffic and happenings. But there's always the wee hours of the morning, right?

So I decided to try something and post it on Illustration Friday, an online community for illustrators which is totally awesome and incredibly inspiring and diverese.

Sad part, I didn't post it. Call it procastination, becauses I seriously don't remember what I did that kept me from finishing the work on time, but I couldn't post it and I wasn't going to even attempt to post it late. That would be so much worse. However, since I did spent quite a bit of time and wrist coordination on last week's theme so I decided to post it here anyways. Artwork is Artwork, right?

As an aspiring illustrator, I don't have a definite style yet, but I did like using the simulation for pastel painting. Not as much fun as getting my fingers dirty, but eeffective and sooo dynamic!

Interwoven

I'm scared of instalations. A wide blank image comes to mind whenever I think of how I can communicate with the existent. Honestly, I don't have an ounce of creativity in this medium. Probably the reason why I was so impressed with Alice Anderson's instalation "Crossing". Although from 2010, the creativity of this woman and how she manages to communicate so many personal barriers in such an innovative and unusual way sets her apart from the rest.

By the use of hair, meters long worth of red-auburn hair, she was able to revive the austere setting of the French Cinemateque converging it with the other organic things in existence. The weight of the hair, caressing softly the hard planes of the gray concrete gently brushes the on-lookers interest, making them pause, look up and step out from their habitual patterns.

The work, matching in color the artist's long tresses, is a reflection of a mother-daughter relationship, undoubtedly Anderson's and what seems to be a quiet self analysis, by which the artist understands herself through the portraying work without aggressively establishing a definite concept that dictates the path observers develop with the instalation. This dynamic progress sometimes coincides with the artists thoughts; most of the time deviates to our own inner complexities. But is clear that with this type of work most, if not all of the time a direct interpretation is necessary for those, like me, who come up with a wide blank image:

Fashion Films!!

Which I didn't even know existed have really made me rethink how much I know about the fashion industry, as in, how little I really know. I wanted to post the videos that I liked best here but they were taking forever to upload so I'll just direct you to the site posted a top listing of fashion films.

However, let me tell you about the ones that impressed me the most, part so people get to know me better, part to improve any writing skill I might have.

1. Prada, S/S 2012 Campaign by Steven Meisel

This one was so admiring. The models seemed to portray their own personalities through their clothing and music which in my opinion infers to the diversity of the collection and the audience the brand is directed to. 5. L’Odyssée de Cartier

This one was so enchanting and fantastic, like a dream, and it was the one that mostly resembled what I would picture a Fashion Film would be. Plus I love history! so the retelling of the evolution of the brand was super interesting and ingenious. Can anyone believe a 3:31 minute video took two years to make?!

I kind of picked up the end of the film as referring to the goal of the brand: to exalt women?* Je ne sais pas.

Hope you guys have a very happy New Year's Celebration. I'll hopefully spend it with some family members from my dad's side of the family. It's always so nice to see family together.

I was wondering if anybody has a New Years Resolution. I never do them, because I know I would get myself in a weird self-pressure state and not do any of them, BUT if you guys have a few, I would like to hear them. To get inspired in bettering myself, ya know?
