Resolution is a decision, its more than a decision. Its derived from the word resolve and that word does not mean same as decide. New Year is upon us and people around are taking resolutions. They range from going to gym, quitting smoking, quitting drinking, play a musical instrument, not cheat on my wife, will be good to parents and what not.

I have never been a big fan of new year resolutions as such. These are pretty much junk to me. The most common question that pops into my head and most of the others is that if its important to make a resolution, why not do it now, why wait till new year. Its logical to think that way. If someone has to postpone a resolution which does good for themselves for a few days then its ridiculous and an insult to one's own integrity.

To me it sounds like an excuse to postpone things, or rather keep on doing things that are wrong. I have seen people who made a resolution to stop drinking from new year and ended up drinking as much as they can on new year's eve. They woke up the next morning in extreme hangover. Well that worked, didn't it?

Its been there from the beginning of time to choose auspicious days for making decisions. As much as I do not want to disrespect the importance of auspicious days, I condemn how people use it as an excuse. I really do think that if someone feels that this is the moment to do it, then this is the moment. Procrastinating things is something we are born with, but doing it till the next auspicious day comes along is something that everyone has to think about.

I am afraid the children will also follow the footsteps of the grown men they see. I have seen many of my friends and sometimes including me rounding off time before doing a certain thing. If the time is 8:45 ,then its so easy to say that I will start by 9. There is nothing wrong in it, we are born that way in this world. Human body has not evolved much for last 50000 years but the mind has evolved in anomalous proportions. With the amount of innovations around we can say that we have gone way ahead of what other humanoids could have achieved with their brain size. But on the other side of the balance we have learned to be lethargic too. Just food for thought.

Further not deviating from the topic, what I wanted to convey to the world is that your resolutions need be on auspicious days unless there is a reason. As intelligent beings, we should be kicking ourselves when we say that I will do something from new year day or Christmas day or whatever day. Whatever it is , the earlier we do, the better for us. And when we do it that particular moment is auspicious to us and I think that's what makes more sense than a day which is hailed to pump up alcohol sales and increase TRPs. Let us use our higher intelligence and understand that, New Year Day is just another Day.

Looking at the old parchments in bright ink,
Like sand castles built in the air...
Washed upon the shore those memories and tales,
Foootprints that will never fade,
And when I look back I see laughter and tears,
And the days when I learnt to live..

Shining the words are in the memoirs I hold close,
Words resounding like it happened now..
I can see all the smiles and the faces of those,
Who left their mark behind...
And when I close my eyes I see the colours and the feathers,
And the days when I learnt to fly..

Melody flowing through the rhythm is not a dream,
Its just the air that breathe in and out,
Cleansing my soul and nourishing the world,
Leaving a signature only time can blur,
And when I go back to see and feel the music,
I can see the days when I learnt to dream...

And those days are far behind and the land far away,

The child inside me stayed back at his homestead,

In search of my soul all the roads lead to there,

Hovering around the castles of fictional existence,

And when I lie down in the sand I feel the cold wind.....

But I had my hope high, that someday its all gonna change,

Well that day seems so far ahead, but waiting is worth some times,

As time went by and days ran away, the smile did not return and it was all in vain.

But life has to go on despite whatever happens,

But whatever happens is always not for good,

There were tears and moans but they all went away,

But her smile still seemed to be far in space.

And one fine day she smiled again,

But the world did not change or stars did not twinkle,

It was just another day which then passed by,

For all the cycle to start again.

I met a guy in my office,He asked if I know something,
He laughed at me because i did not know J2EE.
Fellas, I know C++,I did not know that was not enough,
But its not my fault that i don't know J2EE,
And that is what I am.

I run the eclipse everyday without knowing what it does,
I had Set my Java Home the right way and it always ran without a problem,
But today I just realised that I don't know J2EE,
And that is what I am.

Java means nothing more to me than a cup of coffee,
Whole of the world goes gaga over it, I do not what the fuss is about,
Something that makes our life simple that's all I know, but I don't know J2EE.
And that is what I am.

Now the folks look at me and laugh at me for that,
Chuckling and ridicule hover around my C++ face,
There goes the fellow, they say, who doesn't know J2EE,
And that is what I am,
A person who do not know J2EE, And that is what I am.

Here I am riding on a roller coaster of life,
Where I reach is a matter of time,
The clown has its vengeance burning inside,
On the way to the helm.

And you might say, there is no need for you,
And you might say, there is no love for you and its over,
And i looked at my shadow , and I wonder,
What I have become.....What I have become.....
Tell me what I have become... Just a clown of your cruel jokes...

Empty space and stars running all around my eyes,
When i reach there is a matter of time,
The vengeance burned to sorrow, the laughter turned to screams,
There is nothing left for me...

And you might say, that you don't remember me
And you might say, that you just did not think it would be hard,
And I looked at myself, and I realise,
What I have become.....What I have become.....
I'll tell you what I have become... Just a slave of your mighty will...

I don't own the world and I don't owe the world,
I've paid my dues and I am ready to see the end,
A tight rope around my neck and tears in my eyes,

Hiding behind the calm ocean...

Covered by the veil of darkness with stars knit,

The sound of silence speaks its speech,

Till the orange sun shine again...

I wish I did not have to write this. But it makes me laugh every time I think about someone speaking in a certain way... Its not detrimental to whoever speaks that way.. but sometimes its difficult not to laugh when you hear something like that...

1. The basically folks

I am one of the basically folks as I call it. Most engineers are... We basically start each and every sentence with basically and also basically try to emphasize that the basis of everything can be explained using basically. Well, that does not make much sense.. Basically what i am trying to say is that there are so many ways to start a sentence when You are explaining something to someone. It need not be the same word which is basically, "Basically" .

2. So,

Yeah, I am one of them to, I can't remember how many times i use so in a sentence when i speak... Apparently its a lot. We had a professor in our college who used to teach the so called chemistry subject. When we get bored in class we count the number of "so"s he would say. But the result of which was whopping 384 times in 50 minutes and with a top 87 in 10 minutes.. So what I am saying is that using so, its not so much cool if you are using too much of it.

3. Period!

This one is the best. There are so many ways to emphasize what you say. But the first time I heard someone using period after each sentence I could not stop myself from laughing. The sentence was like " Dude, you have to do what you feel is right period". Yeah period is the fullstop thing. I have heard people using dot for fullstop but Period has been a revelation for me.

Imagine your boss coming to you and saying. "I want it by end of day.. period".
"No matter what you do I will not accept if you do not get it done it by today..period"

4. EOD

I love this word EOD. Its so awesome. "We will deliver the build by EOD". "I will get back to you by EOD". This EOD is very tricky mind you. EOD can be measured with any time zone. With a US customer you can say EOD at night 8 o clock and can still deliver it next morning because it is not EOD yet in US. :D I hope people are intelligent enough to understand the connotations displayed by the word EOD.

5. WFH

I have heard WTF and WTH. WFH was something i never understood in my initial days. Its short for Work from Home. But grammatically superior folks use it has "Wing FH", God knows how people are gonna interpret it. If you think about it you can get a lot of funny full forms for it.. I'll leave it to you guys ;)

6. FYI

Yes, I usually do not read mails which come as FYI. Because there are too many of them.. If you want someone to read something its always best to put a subject in the mail. I hate more so when people do not use for your information completely during speech. I think in next 50 or 60 years we will have all phrases replaced by FYI, PFA, GTG, CYA kind of things.. I hope not..

Lets not maul the language more , so I am signing off with one more of these..
The Sulking and The Drenching.

Goa, as soon as you hear about it there is a ring to it... Just freedom, beaches, wind etc. But there is a small villain which can ruin everything about Goa. Humidity!!! I am from Kerala, for me adjusting to the Goa climate was not that difficult. But some people really found themselves sulking and drenched in the whole 4 years at campus.

On my first day in campus, the registration day ofcourse, there was rain. Not heavy but there was rain. I remember how the whole queue of parents and children shifted from infront of the library to the sidewalks near CH-2 (Then it was GH -1). It was a pandemonium with running parents and children with all the files and documents. From then onwards the rain in Goa has been an integral part of Bitsian Life for me.

Funny thing about Goan rains is that it behaves asif it is drunk. Yeah it does not fall straight. It falls at an angle and changes directions with the wind which blows from Arabian Sea. Well, I cannot remember how many times I got drenched only on one side of my body and the other side seemed completely dry. I also remember there is a point in using Umbrellas in Goa, its just the matter of holding it against the rain, otherwise you are sure to get wet.

I have such nice memories of rains in Goa, but the other season of heat and humidity cannot be remembered with such grace and pleasure. Sweat was all over the place. And we also had the specific distinction to be present in a time where one of the transformers blew up. Those days are worth remembering. Without the fans it was impossible to sleep. So we had to stay awake. I remember we sitting in the balcony and talking whole night. The dota and the CS players were bored and resolved to the other hobbies like playing football, kicking people hard on their birthdays, and so many things which i am not mentioning here.

We had the great opportunity to have candle light dinners in the mess and also passing comments whoever we wanted without getting caught. It was much better when the times were dark. But no matter how many sleepless nights the humidity in goa gave me, and the how the running water from the roof flooded my room and destroyed my UPS and the countless nights without electricity I seemed to enjoy it to the fullest. I think this spirit of having fun even when the times are adverse is a quality that i got from that place. From then I always quote a line which makes me feel that I am a Bitsian.

"We are lost, But we are having a good time"... Indeed we are still lost, but we are having a good time.

What happens when you dig a hole searching for a treasure? Mind you, treasure is something which we believe in, we just feel that the treasure is here at this spot. Many maps, clues and incidents might have guided us to that spot. So we start digging. How long we have to dig, how deep we have to dig, all these are immaterial because all we want is to reach to the treasure. Lets stop here and look at the outcomes of the Treasure Digging.

1. You find the treasure and you get killed by your friend who was secretly watching you dig. Probability(0.0001 %)

This is a tricky situation. After all the hardwork we have done at the end of it, the fruit of all the hardwork goes to the one most beloved friend, who is by the way a treacherous one-eyed pirate. No way you can prevent this because you are a good person and you love your friends. If you find yourself in this situation anytime, you can actually use some last words which can increase the melodrama of the situation incase your story is made into a movie. The dialogues can be "You, i trusted you... You are my friend, if you had asked i would have given this to you.... you traitor".. The pirate friend of yours might just say, "Screw yerself and go to Davy Jone's Locker".

2. You find the treasure and you die of a cardiac arrest due to the happiness. Probability(0.0001 %)

This can happen if you are a heart patient or you have no control over your emotions.Well, most people have weak hearts can succumb to this outcome. As a precaution you can take a trusted doctor with you incase of such an occurence. EnT specialists and life support equipments can be present too. All I have to say is that make sure that you are there to enjoy the treasure. Only good thing is that in this scenario, if there was a friend who was ready to murder you(Scenario 1) you can save him some trouble.

3. You find the treasure but you get killed by your relatives because they are a bunch of asses . Probablity(0.0004%)

This is inevitable. There is no way around it.

4. You find the treasure. Probability(0.0006%)

Yeah, No matter howmuchever you try to find a treasure which is not there , most likely you will not find it. And death is imminent. You cannot stop death(For Final Destination Fans). So before you shovel up the treasure spot, dig your own grave.

5. You do not find the treasure. Probability(99.9994%)

Yeah. The most likely outcome. This might seem very discouraging for the treasure hunters, but yeah this is the truth. The quest will break your heart and soul and you end up losing. Also possible suicides and mental disorders can be an outcome if this happens.

And yeah, thanks for reading this whole bunch of crap and not killing me for it. And yeah.. just replace finding treasure and falling in love with a girl and my idea is conveyed.
You held me close like I was a part of you,
Closed your eyes and feigned a smile, I said
The whole land lies in its sleep,
Under the blanket of snow and fog,
And the sky cannot be more clear,
Like the clouds have wandered somewhere.
And the world remains still as a picture,
Before the birds chirp and light shines,
The tranquility of 4 o clock is much beyond recital.
The wind carries the freshness of souls,
Returning to their graveyard stone,
There is a chill in the bones as I stand outside,
But its not scary, but beautiful indeed.
And as the world wakes up I still feel the breeze
The silence unveils itself in the sound of glory,
And when the six strings and the wood gave away,

The pulse of the bends and blues blew the world away,

A new age in the world of music was born,

And that's what we call rock and roll.

The golden haired angel and the stoned pied piper,

The cream of youth from the island nation,

And the school boy from down under grew,

To fulfill the legend of the crossroads.

The fury of the devil's note took the world by surprise,

Even the God frowned upon the might of his tone,

From the ashes of steel flying in the air,

Was born the music to frighten your soul.

Fakers and posers all came and went,

The fast, furious and the crazy went by,

The lights of darkness showered upon us,

Even the sound of silence bore some tone.

The wall came down and the birds chirped away,

Bugs in the garden, became household name,

Pride and Joy filled in the world,

All in the glory of the seventh heaven.

Not a blast, not a terror attack. But a victim of seeing things happening around me for no reason, Why are you killing us? Is it to prove a point? Let me tell you my friends, fear cannot conquer a person, it can only consume someone. If you will give long enough for someone to know what the fear is all about, its not a fear anymore. Its like a doctor getting used to doing surgeries or a small kid getting used to the darkness etc. Fear is not longevity, It will die as the courage soars in the hearts of the conquered.

What is it done for? Is it in the name of religion? Then you do not have a cause at all. Did you make sure that the thousands who die because of your atrocities belong to only a specific race or caste. Because of your wrong doings, a religion which is pure at its heart and divine in its presence and strict in its practice is being demeaned throughout the world.

Are you willing to blow up your family, friends for the same cause? Because in the name of retaliation people are forced to do the same. Human Lives cannot be counted for money, there was a time when it was done that way, that was slavery. We are way past it. Every single person's whose blood is being spilled, whether its you or the person whom you killed, has a value. That you do not care for it is inhumane, and unpardonable. I am no one to punish you, I am not wishing you any good or bad.

Is it to bring down an establishment? Then the answer is simple. Leave my country alone, leave my people alone.. If you want to show that you have power, provide better amenities than my government does.. People will surely listen to what you say. Its the best and the only way to conquer the spirits of people.

Today I am alive, writing this.. Tomorrow I might not be, but there will be thousands like me asking the same questions. And there will be a day when you have to answer all of this. And yeah, everything has an end.

We are strong, we'll hold our fort as long as we are alive. "A civilization shall not be conquered unless it is destroyed from within" . Call me outrageous, I don't care. But one question deserves the answer.

What do you actually want from us?

Its not our blood, its not our lives, then what is it?

I will not be surprised if you do not have an answer. But you must be intrigued, if you don't have one. "

My office is in a building of 10 floors. 7 working areas and 3 parking areas among those 10 floors. And there are only 4 elevators in the building. To be frank it kinda sucks. But yeah in due course of time they have taught me some valuable lessons.

1. Patience boy Patience

This patience is two fold. One is to wait for the elevator when you do not have it in my floor and then when inside the lift it stops at each and every floor, taking forever to reach the ground. In real life, its often that we have to be patient for things to happen, or even when things start happening lot of obstacles come into picture. At the end of it all you reach the Ground Floor or P2(cafeteria)..Oops i meant destiny....

2. Problems come and go, You just need to wait.

Whenever i get into the elevator, i pray "please take me to the level 6 directly", sometimes i do get there directly, sometimes i have to wait for ages to reach there. People come in like uninvited guests and the crawling elevator reaches level 6 after ages. Life is so much like it, uninvited people, happenings, come in and disrupt it, leave us disconsolate about things, but in the end we reach there, shrugging all problems.. yes level 6.. or destiny whatever.

3. Meet new people, interact, exchange smiles

I meet strangers everyday, in the elevator. I smile at them. They don't smile at me sometimes, sometimes they do. Reminds me there are different people in the world. Some good, some bad, some considerate, some inconsiderate. Every journey up and down is filled with faces. Sometimes like a market with people chit chatting. Sometimes pestering talks and sometimes serene silence....

4. Take the stairs sometime.. You always got other ways...

When I find elevators crowded always, I take the stairs, gives me sometime to think about myself, exercise to my body and lot of loneliness. In life we need it all to keep going. Time for oneself, Healthy body etc. And most importantly we need not always follow the easier path, we can take the elevator or stairs to reach..this time i am going to get it right... destiny!!!

5. Waiting is always not that bad..

Elevators come and go, sometimes I need to wait. I often meet people waiting for the elevator, talk to them. Sometimes we get to meet someone nice or special while doing that. Life also works the same way does it not? Strange coincidences happen when we are stuck up with something not important to us...

Elevators are metaphors for life in my office building, it can go your way, there might be disturbances, there might be stoppages, there might be annoyance but definitely at the end of it all I am gonna reach destiny or rather destination in my case - Level 6..

Weeks have passed faster than it should. Its not because of IPL, its because of the work at office. IPL has been boring nonetheless this times. Very few interesting matches. Except for the glimpses of Sehwag turning a match around and Chennai's inevitable habit of sealing matches in the last few overs, this IPL has been very much below par. I kept on reading articles in cricinfo regarding the TV ratings going down. Anyway it was not a great surprise to me. But there are few facts about this IPL which I would like to discuss and share with you guys.

Players

1. Rahul Sharma - looks like the next victim in line for expecting too much and never getting to play international cricket again.
2. Virat Kohli - I am as old as him but he seems to have the fury that all the 22 years in the world together can possess.
3. Chris Gayle - Playing against Bangalore was like having a beer on the beachside and enjoying , till he arrived.
4. SRT - Ohh.. too much has been told about him. I shall keep quiet.
5. Return of the Dada - He came, He saw, He conquered. True Hero.
6. Malinga - I think they are going to introduce the rule that there can only be one yorker per over.
7. Shane Warne - Added the australian flavour of sledging on and off the field.
8. Sehwag and Gambhir - Partners in crime, shoulder injuries, picked up during world cup, both out of the tour of WI.
9. Sreesanth - "I was just telling Lawson that I wont drink anything else other than Bisleri, when i threw down the bottle"
10. Fake IPL Player - We tried a lot to bring him back. This IPL was much less interesting because of him.

Commentators

1. Ravi Shastri - During this IPL Mr. Ravi Shastri got the "feeling" approximately 10476.5 times and 10476 times he was right.
2. Sunil Gavaskar - As I always say, old man go home and take rest. I dont want an Ian Chappell from India
3. L. Sivaramakrishnan - Here is what he said everytime a catch was taken near the boundary. X tried to launch Y for a "DLF Maximum" , but Z has taken a "Karbonn Kamaal Catch" and this might turn to be a "Citi Moment of Success" for the bowling side.
5. Harsha Bhogle - Reminds me what sanity is.
6. Mark Boucher - Was not feeling fit in the tie, ditched the commentary for a spot in KKR.
7. Brad Hogg - He bowled Chinaman spin while playing cricket, probably should have just stuck with that.
I am sure you have all heard the story about the cat who fell in hot water and then it became afraid of even water. Yeah, I am also a cat. A very unfortunate one. But I did not fall in hot water, i fell in love once. The fall was amazing, it was sort of a free fall, where I lost my conscience, integrity and i enjoyed. When I hit the water bed hard I realised, this is painful. Nice but painful. I could not go through the pain and it did not last forever. Time passed on. Years went by.

Then it was time for me to fall in love again. I prepared myself so much and I was really scared of all this stuff. But, I knew I had to go through it, otherwise its like gulping a hot ball which is stuck at my throat, either I have to swallow and get hurt a bit more or spit it out and get it done with. But the cat in me started getting afraid. All the experience of free fall and the water splashing came into my head, and I hesitated. Like the diver walking on a springboard, i just started taking shivery steps to the end of the board.

Every step I took, I asked myself a 100 questions. Will it be fine? Will this work? Is it necessary? Is it worth it? Lots of it. I also gave myself constant self confidence boosters like "you're gonna be okay" and "you've got to do this" etc etc. But each and every step I took, I felt more intimidated by the pain this can cause. But with pain there comes in a lot of happiness. I was like a mean street merchant who has a balance and weighing stuff, in my case the balance had pain and happiness at both ends. After a lot of see-saw games I arrived at a conclusion. I have to do this. For that matter I have my experience in doing this as well as I can brace myself well if not completely.

I took the final steps on the springboard. Nervous, Anxiety, Excitement, Fear everything ran in my head. But yeah, I've got to do this.. I took a pause, pressed on the springboard and I leapt, I rose into the air and I started my fall.. Free Falling... I am falling now.. I do not know how its gonna feel when i hit the water.. But its the journey which counts... Is it not?

But for now.. I am just falling....

Cheers
Sivasankar Menon

Take a bow!!

It was mayhem, it was massacre, it was torture for Deccan Bowlers in Hyderabad tonight. It was asif the fielders and the bowlers were watching Virender Sehwag play. Delhi called for him and Viru unleashed himself. I should feel sorry for the bowlers of Deccan. What would you do to a man like that? The Deccan Bowlers seemed to be a bait tied up for a lion in his own den.

Wickets were tumbling down on one side. But once Viru decided , "Okay, I am gonna win this", even the Gods conspired in his favour. There was no pacing his innings. We know what pace he always goes. 56 balls 119 runs, 13 boundaries and 6 Maximums(rather DLF Maximums :P) with a strike rate of 212. This was his day.

Getting off the mark in the streaky Virender Sehwag fashion a slash which flew past the second slip, and he has made a habit of starting every innings with a boundary. Finch did not interest much as he would have done for Darwin, Ojha failed again and Venu who was playing against his own makers was trying to hit everything out of the park and finally succumbed. Delhi was on the verge of another implosion.

But Viru had other ideas. The match was skewed highly in favour of the Chargers after 7 overs. Scorecard read 32/3 and Viru on 14 from 15 balls. He launched on to Malhotra, taking 23 runs in an over. And we were all launched to a magic ride. From the 8th over onwards the runs scored per over read 23,13,17,7,15,12,10,20 till the end of 15th over. The scorecard said a different story 149/4. Sehwag was on 118 from 53 balls. And he was involved in two partnerships in this period. The other batsman scored 4 and 12 respectively out of 128 runs between them and Sehwag.

There were two dropped chances one when he was on 54 and one on 70, but with Sehwag there is always this lucky charm. How often have we seen a dropped catch of Sehwag costing the opposition a match. As Sangakkara was asked by Ravi Shastri, "What would you do when someone plays like this?", he replied, "We sure have to take all the catches". That said it all. All over for Deccan, and Delhi keeps their hopes alive and they owe this to Virender Sehwag, playing the best T20 innings I have ever seen. Sehwag!!! Take a bow!!!
The move is said to snub the movement of the associate and affiliate nations against ICC. The ICC also mentioned that IPL contains players from all over the world and that would remove the worry of "taking the world out of world cup".

When asked whether the IPL teams used to the 20-20 format will survive the 50-over format, Sharad Powar sheepishly replied saying that , "they can definitely beat Bangladesh and West Indies". There has also been news about increasing the powerplay to 30 overs, 15 overs mandatory, 5 for the batting side and bowling side each and the remaining 5 for bookmakers and sponsors to change the course of the match. It is also known that cheerleaders will be added to the WC as the increase in the powerplay overs are going to spice up the game. ICC president Pawar has also hinted certain more innovations in the game, such as a bowler not allowed to bowl more than one yorker in an over and cannot have a spell for more than 3 overs on a trot.

The West Indies Cricket Board has said that this move can strangle the already depleted WI side with Pollard, Gayle and Bravo not in the central contract. The spokesman said, "We are planning to send Trinidad and Tobago to play the world cup because we see that they have a better chance to win the world cup". The Associate and Affiliate nations are yet to respond to the change. But sources confirm that out of 4 foreign players that can play in a match for an IPL franchise, two are supposed to be from the Associate Nations.

The tournament structure also has considerable change, with a round robin play off and top 2 international teams and top two IPL teams will make the Semi Finals. The two IPL teams will play against each other in the semi final and similarly the top 2 international teams will play against each other in the other semi final. Asked about this weird schedule, Mr.Powar said, if no Indian is playing the final, then the TRPs would go down in India, such a catastrophic loss, the ICC cannot afford. He also said he considering a rematch scenario, when the losing captain of the final can ask for a rematch, in which if his team wins, the cup will be shared.

This move is to have surprised everyone around the world. Mr.Powar is known to have threatened the ACB and NZ Cricket association to move out the event to India if they do not concede. But ACB chairman said that, "Whatever Mr.Powar has decided is best in the interest of cricket, we totally accept that". With rumours spreading around, we still are not sure whether the IPL franchises will release the foreign players to play for their country. A national side is supposed to pay 40000$ to the franchise to get hold of its players.
