Miss Afia Rana is a beautiful young lady who has landed her dream job. She’s an airline stewardess flying for India’s Southern Airlines. She makes frequent trips to Bombay, Mumbai, and the famous Juhu Beach area surrounded by the Arabian Sea. Exotic and romantic, Afia also attracts the man of her dreams and he’s the head of a Steel empire. His business takes him across the middle east as a frequent flyer. Afia is flying high and loving her life, until her baby arrives and the years slowly turn to Steel Fetters as she challenges the “false morality of the 1980’s.” Her endless love for her child gives her the strength to rise again and again against a difficult backdrop and an unfair situation that life has handed her.

The author, Tina Fernandez, does a good job with this personal experience story. It describes the plight of countless women during this era. While every country had its own way of chastisement for these brave single mothers there is little wonder why abortion became so popular. There were no easy choices and no easy answers for the women who faced the dilemma, especially in India.

Before the baby, Afia’s father held a different dream for her. It followed traditional. He wanted to choose a husband for his daughter. She would retire from flying, become a loving wife and raise a family. This is the way it was done in India, except Afia hated this dream and wanted no part of it. The situation threatened to tear the family apart. Afia’s mother would also have choices to make and they would not be easy.

Tina Fernandez is a successful author and business woman who keeps the cause of single motherhood close to her heart. She champions associations that support these brave mothers as they choose life for their children. She knows what a high price they are paying in a society that has false values and, “false morality,” when it comes to unwed mothers. Her book will speak to women of all ages, especially single mothers. It may also speak to the children of these single moms; the children who appreciate the sacrifices their moms made to keep them safe. On a deep level, Steel Fetters is a story about society and moral norms that do not serve humanity and how one woman challenged them. She broke through what seemed like steel to build a secure and happy home life for herself and her beloved son.

There is a question business owners should ask themselves every day. “Is the customer always right?” Most owners want to believe customers are right and spend countless hours trying to please them. This is fine and not a problem unless they are dealing with a Toxic Client. Sutton disagrees with, “The customer is always right” approach. He disagrees, but suggest using professionalism to reasonably accommodate them to resolve the issue, however, if that doesn’t work, the customer is not to be catered to. They are moved to the Toxic Client category. There they are dealt with on different terms. He offers the reader many personal stories and case study details to equip them with all they need to confidently deal with a Toxic client. Dealing with them quickly and effectively will allow a business owner to concentrate instead on the “twenty percent of their good clients or customers who actually provide eighty percent of their revenues.” With practice, Sutton encourages the business owner, they can stay focused on this group and consistently avoid the client that will only drain them emotionally and financially.

Sutton’s advice includes listening and paying attention to that “still small voice, trusting one’s instincts, knowing that people lie, have mental health issues and get addicted to drugs and alcohol. Some people are narcissistic and just plain feel entitled to impose their exaggerated demands on others. These troubled customers are toxic and they need to be avoided or dismissed in professional ways. The author teaches his readers how to swiftly and effectively take control of the situation. Each chapter is expertly written and goes straight to the heart of the matter. This book is informative, compelling and an encouraging read for all types of business owners.

I recommend Toxic Client-Knowing and Avoiding the Problem Customer as a handy reference guide for any business owner or entrepreneur, especially new ones who may be “excited” and “somewhat unaware” of how fast the toxic customer can descend on a business and wreak havoc there. In addition, this book includes three Appendix’s: Appendix A, Mechanics’ Liens, Appendix B, Small Claims Court, and Appendix C, Collection Agencies. Each Appendix is a resource within itself and may be needed to deal with Toxic Clients. Dawn and Sunset is a compelling Tale of the Oldest Cities of the Near East written by amateur historian and Israeli high school English teacher, Michael Baizerman. It’s clear, Baizerman has spent countless hours researching and documenting this work. He has compiled minute details of everyday life of the inhabitants of the old world known as Mesopotamia and the cradle of civilization. The oldest cities encompassed the Persian Gulf area and were referred to as Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian regions. The Mesopotamia area today is known as Eastern Turkey, IRAQ, Kuwait, Baghdad, Iran and Northern Syria. The Greek meaning of Mesopotamia is, “land between two rivers.” The twin rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates nourished Mesopotamia and made it possible for nomadic tribes to begin to cultivate the land for agriculture and eventually settle into communal villages where life as we know it began. Then much changed over the course of time. A lot of historical ground is covered in the many millenniums referenced with some emphasis on the third and fourth millennia BCE.

This work may be more than A Tale, perhaps it’s a social study of our earliest ancestors? Perhaps it’s closer to a documentary of facts, yet facts that are sometimes verified through myths, legends and the poetry of that millennium? Baizerman blazes on undaunted by the scarcity of information for some periods and events. He gathers his content from different angles to expose discrepancies and biases for what they were. If there is no documentation to support the claim he will pursue other avenues; he will find a hieroglyphic, a poem or an architectural marker of that time period so his points are well documented. The author himself says it best, “only artists and scholars are entitled to examine our history through a magnifying glass with inexhaustible vigor,” which he does very well in creating this educational volume called Dawn and Sunset.

The Gods drove every decision in the ancient world. Temples attested to their glory and power. In the beginning, the Temples controlled the economic life of a community. They were central to all the regions and the many Gods were worshipped and honored constantly. Life was a battle, a consistent struggle with the hostile land and various populations of people. Irrigation and farming allowed for communal villages to give way to more complex societies with district states. Then pristine cities became early empires and these gave way to dynasties with corruption and exploitation that would bring in the Dark Ages and the eventual collapse of this early civilization that had been “two thousand turbulent years in the making.” The temples fell to government rule and general’s built extravagant palaces to display power and demand respect whether they deserved it or not. Many great leaders and warriors would rise and fall. Some were virtuous and some were not. War was inevitable and peace was all but nonexistent.

Though it all, writing, language and technological advancement prevailed; metals, ceramics and new building materials enhanced and changed their way of life forever. New transportation routes and foreign trade changed the landscape, social classes, and the expectations of the people. Division of labor and other inequities emerged that would lead to more wars and the eventual demise of a once glorious nation known as Mesopotamia. From pre-civilization to civilization to its very downfall, this book delivers a lot as each chapter is organized and packed with great detail about the grueling and difficult historical times between the Dawn and Sunset of Mesopotamia– A Tale of the Oldest Cities of the Near East. Ironically, through this writing we can see many parallels of modern day society as it faces some of the same indignities and dilemmas of this historical period.

After Dawn and Sunset author Michael Baizenman emerges with a new book and is already writing it. It’s about the attitude of the Latin West to the East on the eve of the Age of Discovery. Both books should appeal to history lovers and educators who like a dedicated spirit of inquiry and documented exposure of facts that may not be so factual. Of course, any differences in opinion, by this author is well researched, well documented and well written. These volumes are sure to be a handy resource for any educator who would like that little extra detail when it comes to the history of ancient civilizations.

The Soul Hypnotist is set is Louth Ireland and London England where an adopted child’s every dream unfolds and a young woman emerges ready for everlasting love and happiness that will carry her into a blessed future. Somehow that blessed future gets derailed by a jinni. If only Laoise had listened to her dying father when he said, “follow your heart Laoise, always follow your heart.” If only she had listened!

Author, Edwina Orelus was born in Haiti, is well travelled and studied filmmaking at the Art Institute of Los Angeles. In this romantic and religious fiction, she encourages her readers to embrace their faith and spirituality and to “always listen to their instincts because they are always right.” Written in third person narrative, the author has woven a fictional tale filled with romantic and supernatural twist and turns. Laoise must use her instincts to stay safe from the jinni, “the God-created spirits that can be good or bad.” Orelus makes her point as Laoise has been protected by angels many times, yet finds herself in tragic circumstances that can only be removed by quick instincts, faith and fast actions.

The jinni is found in Arabian and Muslim Mythology. They are intelligent, function a bit lower than angels and can possess humans negatively if they do not stay in constant faith. These spirits are invisible to most humans but they are always around. Laoise’s father feared them and Laoise has seen indications of their presence throughout her lifetime. Although protected, she encountered pure evil at Saint Martin Boarding School in the South of France, a prestigious Christian landmark since the 14^th Century.

Laoise is half Irish and half Egyptian. After graduation she travels to Egypt to see the pyramids and learn about the Egyptian culture. She meets and falls in love with a man who is destined to become her husband. Her wedding is planned and Laoise is so happy. She is independent and lives her life on her own terms. Life is good and Laoise wants to keep it that way. It will mean keeping many secrets from her adoptive and controlling mother, Iezabel. Thank goodness, her adoptive father, Ahab is much more understanding and compassionate toward her goals. Laoise has always been closer to Ahab. He understands her better than Iezabel, but he loves Iezabel and keeps the peace in this family.

This book is well written and with an edit would prevent readers from being just a bit distracted from the story line and the author’s message about faith and being true to oneself. The story is suspenseful in just the right places and will hypnotize romantic fiction lovers who have a flare for the supernatural and are not afraid of demonic undertones. Be prepared for plot twists and a cliff hanger ending that I believe could only be laying the groundwork for an enchanting sequel to The Soul Hypnotist. Of course, only the author, Edwina Orelus could tell us for sure.

Invisible Threads is a progressive and adventurous romantic fiction written by Gibraltar’s businesswoman, Priscilla Sacramento. It’s a love story that begins a generation before that of Maria Jesus and the love of her life, Pepe. Their forbidden love is so very strong and will not be denied. It sets in motion a secret that will be carried to future generations before it can be solved. The tale spans the entire twentieth century and is centered in the regions of Spain, Gibraltar and Morocco where the Roman Catholic, Christian and Islamic religions are as strong as they are different.

Within this third person narrative much is revealed about the religion and culture of the Spanish, the Muslims and the English people alike. In particular, the hardships of women are emphasized as Roman Catholic girls often marry Muslim men and give birth to their children. The author navigates her story well as she describes how these families survive war-troubled times as well as the inevitable belief changes that occur from one generation to the next. For instance, women become more independent, they don’t want to just be the property of men and have babies as their main purpose in life. Some will wait until they are much older to marry and plan on contributing to the family income by starting small businesses of their own. It’s not always easy, but change does occur. The book is timely and offers gentle encouragement for our troubled times.

The evening of December 31, 1999 is most exciting and proves to be auspicious in several ways. Families have come together from all the surrounding regions. Pat and Tito Garcia have invited all their immediate family, their distant relatives and many friends to Gibraltar for this special gathering. The children are dressed in their finest attire as well as the grown-ups. The Garcia party has unknowingly brought together a lost family and they celebrate with zeal and enthusiasm to bring in the twenty first century with the best of everything. They want to enter the new millennium celebrating family, peace, harmony, and prosperity for all.

At the deepest level, Invisible Threads is a story about women’s issues, the diversity of people, changing times and as Priscilla Sacramento beautifully describes, “the collective striving of the human species.” While seemingly invisible, the day-to-day lives of everyday people reveals how small the world is and how connected we all really are. An invisible link becomes visible to us as we see human beings strive for love and happiness in an unpredictable world. This is a delightful, yet serious, romantic fiction that will speak to the heart of women and romantic fiction lovers everywhere. Also, it will speak to anyone who wants insight into the history and culture of the regions of Spain, North Africa and British ruled Gibraltar – all different in beliefs and customs, yet similar in the desire for love, happiness and meaning in their world.

Back to Jerusalem is a novel written by Jan Surasky, the 2012 award winning author of Rage Against the Dying Light, a story about Boudicca and her battle with the Roman Empire. Back to Jerusalem is a novel about another type of battle faced by women living in the 1970’s. Set in the small town of Jerusalem New York, Jenny Thompson grows up on her family farm, just hours from New York City. Jenny is gifted and dreams of going to college and pursuing the life of a successful artist. However, like so many young women of her time, Jenny feels the pressure from her mother and society to put her dreams on hold. Women of this era are expected to marry well, have children, and support their husbands as they climb the ladder of success. That’s all that is expected of Jenny, but she is destined for so much more.

Jenny is beautiful, compassionate and very talented. She’s dating the local football star when she graduates from high school. Bud sweeps her off her feet and they soon marry and have a wonderful son, Josh. Later, Bud proves he’s not the best husband and not the best father either. Jenny has an eye for what is real, beautiful and good. She wants a more loving and fulfilled life. She moves to New York City. There, Jenny struggles, but over time builds a successful life for herself and her beloved son who is growing up. She’s becoming known for her beautiful landscape paintings and her photography.

In New York, Jenny sees cultures collide and find ways to exist side-by-side without issue, without drama. She thinks of Jake Martin, childhood friend and playmate. Jake was a Mennonite. She remembers what a great person Jake was and how he dreamed of becoming a revered attorney. He wanted to help the poor. Jake had meant a lot to Jenny growing up, but her world and his would not have been accepted by her mother and her Methodist upbringing. Her mother would never have approved. The question was would her path and Jake’s ever cross again? And, if they did would he inspire her and she him as they once had, so long ago? When Jake’s picture hits the cover of the New York Times, Jenny dreams they might, but learns Jake has a fiancé. Fate would have to intervene if this couple would ever find each other again.

Jan Surasky’s first successful novel, Rage Against the Dying Light received the Eric Hoffer Award and many rave reviews from established publications. She has now created Back to Jerusalem as another great book. Through Jenny, this one accurately depicts the plight of women caught in the strong grip of society’s expectations of them in the 1970’s. Liberation is slow to come for many women, if at all. Jenny lived her life in the traditional way as long as she could. She finds herself divorced and struggles for real meaning in her life. It’s difficult, but she finds her way back to her talents as an artist. She is successful in every way and she’s done it all by herself. The one thing she is missing is real love and contentment. The question is if she goes Back to Jerusalem will she find it? To find out, it is a must read.

This novel is really a love story, written in a narrative that will speak to those who are romantic at heart, those who desire a little mystery and those who look for what is real in life. I believe this is a book for any woman who has struggled against odds to be successful in the face of a society that says she can’t do it and shouldn’t even try. And, Back to Jerusalem is an encouragement to women everywhere, to never give up on their dreams.

And, why do I love The Sheraton Read House some have asked? Well, let me explain. I lead a double life, working full-time and moonlighting as a writer and professional reviewer as often as I can. Writing is my creative passion. I live in Jacksonville, Alabama, a small town surrounded by Birmingham Alabama, Atlanta Georgia and Chattanooga Tennessee. I enjoy getting away for the weekend, and for me Chattanooga is my most fun get-a-way location and The Sheraton Read House is one of my favorite hotels. What I love best is how the city makes it easy to get around and The Read House makes my stay delightful. Most cities I visit in Alabama, Georgia or Florida, I am forced to drive my car to the main attractions and hotel quality will vary. Once I’m checked in at The Read House, the valet parks my car and I never see it again, until I leave. I usually walk the seven or eight blocks down to the river, to the Aquarium, or to the Art District or to any number of restaurants or special music events that might be in town. There’s one caveat: the traffic signals - they change too quickly and you don’t have time to get across the street before they change again. If I don’t feel like walking, I can, conveniently, rent a modern city bike for only $6.00 per day and turn it in at my destination, no problems, except for those changing lights! And, best of all there is the free Electric Shuttle. I can hitch a ride on the Shuttle and go anywhere in the city. I especially like riding it to the Chattanooga Choo Choo and The English Rose Tea Room. The Read House has its very own Shuttle stop so I can get on right in front of the hotel. It makes the whole experience just awesome!

As much fun as downtown Chattanooga can be, The Read House has so much to offer you almost don’t need to leave the hotel to feel like you’ve had a great vacation. Sometimes I meander about enjoying the grandeur of this marvelous place. I grab a glass of merlot, slip up to the mezzanine, find a comfortable spot and pretend I’m the pianist sitting at the baby grand below, creating a crescendo for those still coming and going. What more could one need to recharge? It's truly rare to find such elegance in a hotel coupled with outstanding service and yet still feel so very casual, laid back and comfortable while you are there. The Sheraton Read House has become a beloved, favorite hotel to me because it has so much to offer and it does not disappoint.

The Big Empty is a novel, written by seasoned author Ritch Gaiti, sure to bat a home run with fiction lovers, conspiracy theorists, and anyone who likes a fast-paced mystery that keeps the reader guessing until the very end. Written in true conspiracy theory style, Gaiti’s protagonist, Rick Wallace, has only a small thread of information when he begins an assignment that takes him back to his roots in the Bronx and New York City. The conspiracy he unravels goes all the way to the top of New York Society and back to the first inhabitants of the land there, the Native Americans. It’s often difficult for Rick to tell what is real, coincidence or just plain propaganda. Uncovering the truth could cost him his life but, strong and stubborn, he won’t back down.

The author accomplishes his goal of exposing the vast conspiracy through characters that cannot be bought off or manipulated, but it’s difficult to tell who’s playing who. The timeline changes quickly too, like a New York train, but you won’t mind tracking it because it’s all part of the adventure. Some language designates this book for mature audiences only. Expertly written in third and first person narrative the dialogue between characters makes this fiction believable. For instance, Rick is a take me as I am kind of guy. He’s less than perfect, wounded but still has heart and soul. He’s lovable and caring, sometimes, and other times he’s just in your face, up-close and personal. The evasive E.P Smith and his wife are two very interesting characters, along with Professor Elias Opdyck. Elias is a long-time resident of the city, but wanders the streets like a tourist marveling at skyscrapers and landmarks.

Author, Ritch Gaiti is well established, an artist, screenplay writer and producer of short films. He’s been interviewed on several talk shows, including The Today Show, regarding his previous book, titled Points. In The Big Empty mystery, the author racks up a victory for the insignificant little man trying to survive against big business antics, when Rick fills in The Big Empty in court explaining the Latin meaning of Terra Nullius, and how it set a de facto standard of behavior that was unfair and exploited indigenous people, so long ago. Question is will the jury buy it, now? Written on many levels, there’s a realistic plot here that gives pause for serious thought about the plight of the Native Americans who offered up their hospitality to the white man, only to be deceived by them later on. No small feat for an author, Rick Wallace’s personal story is woven in and captivating as is the larger story itself. In my opinion, The Big Empty is not empty at all, but choc-full of possibility to become a best seller.

Lioslaith Last of the Painted Ones Book One, by author George C. Myles, is an adventurous, historical fiction set in 9^th Century Scotland during its dark age: a critical period, after the Romans and just before the Viking invasions. Despite their fierce fighting ability and battle-hard warriors, the Pict’s thousand year reign is coming to a close and their traditions are challenged by new influences including a new religion of the cross. Lioslaith, the story’s main character, is a young girl coming of age who rebels against all that is new, embracing instead the old ways of her people and their tradition of full body tattooing. It’s called scarification. Through Lioslaith, and other characters like Bre and Erca, the author challenges us to think of the Pict people as more than barbarians in spite of their bloody battles, lust, and constant struggle for power and revenge. Some adult language classes this novel for mature audiences only.

The Norsemen have raided Northumbria and are moving quickly to overtake the powerful Pictland kingdom of Fortriu and the Gael mainland of Dalraida. The Viking craving for fertile land seems insatiable and their efficient long ships might be able to sail right into the mainland through the mouth of the River Dee. To stop the terror, the Pict King Oengus allies with the Scoti, A’ed mac Boanta, who is the Vassal King of Dalraida. Former enemies, they form an alliance and develop a plan to attack and annihilate the cruel Vikings. The brutality of the age is unthinkable, yet this story is laced with romantic encounters, love, and the hope of love, supposing for us a civilization of human beings struggling to survive and find some happiness and meaning in their existence. Love and the human spirit are constantly tested as lovers and families face bloody warfare, treachery and betrayal.

The author, George C. Myles, uses descriptive writing and, both, third person and first person narrative to tell the story of Lioslaith. He expresses three viewpoints within the book: that of the Picts, the Gaels and that of the Vikings. To keep the storyline straight, he has included a character list at the front of the book. While each of these nations has many formidable characters, they also have likable characters that are simple and have honor and integrity. Even the Viking warlord, Fafnir Hognison, shows loyalty to his wife and restraint and compassion for the young slave woman, Malmury. The author achieves his objective of honoring the Picts as, high-spirited people, determined to defeat their enemies in order to protect their land, their culture and their traditions. We might ask ourselves were they really so different than we might be, given human nature and their circumstances? Even as Lioslaith embraces her destiny; a destiny she did not expect, she carries part of her past and family traditions with her as they are etched into her skin. Lioslaith descends from Pict nobility and is the Last of the Painted Ones in this Book One. She wears her designs proudly into her future and makes one wonder what she might accomplish in the sequel that will be forthcoming from author George C. Myles. Lioslaith book one is an easier read than it originally appears. Romantics and lovers of ancient history, and historical fiction will enjoy this book and thirst for book two.

It offers all the tools and information parents need to give them complete confidence they and their child will survive potty training, and even see it as the first of many great adventures they have embarked on together. It seems any parent could benefit from her first-hand experience in potty training and her extensive research from so many trained experts. This is a book mothers and fathers will want to have handy when the time comes to potty train their child. It would also be an excellent book for other caregivers who take part in a parent's journey of potty training. Even the baby sitter and grandparents might find this book very informative and fitting for today's busy times.

Author, Dr. Patricia M. Wynne holds a doctorate degree in Neuroscience from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. By One Vote is a political novel and documentary series written by expert author Carole Eglash-Kosoff. It is a story about 12 significant events in American politics where one vote altered our society, significantly, and set our nation on an entirely different course. While each generation may think it is facing the nation's worst political and economic times, By One Vote is a poignant and factual story that tells us otherwise. Through the authors detailed and elaborated accounts of history we see what she describes as "The Butterfly Effect," how one small change at one moment in time can have a large, profound and sweeping effect at a later time. We also begin to see how the political wheel of social justice turns and how it is often turned by just one vote. Written in third person narrative and often explicit first person dialogue, this book is for mature audiences. It is well researched and dedicated to the unsung heroes, the unknowns-not famous men and women of history, who changed the world by having conviction and standing up for what they believed. These people changed the world as much as Roosevelt, Lincoln or Bush.

In 1783 the War of Independence was over. Unpaid soldiers from 13 colonies defeated the 18th Century's most dominant world power, The United Kingdom. It was no contest that General George Washington would become the first President of the United States, however, establishing new rules for running a country was no easy task; even the location for a central government was highly disputed. At a New York tavern, Alexander Hamilton and Robert Morris from the Federalist Party met privately with two leading Republicans, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. If Hamilton gets his financial package passed they will see that Jefferson gets the national capitol built along the Potomac River, near Virginia and Maryland. Until completed, the temporary capitol location would stay in the "City of Brotherly Love," Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The deal was sealed. Jefferson and Madison began encouraging southern states to vote for Hamilton's financial or Assumption Act and Robert Morris changed his vote for the Residency Act to pass in favor of the District of Columbia. All hinged on that one vote.

Later in the election of 1800, Thomas Jefferson is running against Aaron Burr and there's a deadlock; the nation experiences its first Constitutional crisis. Jefferson meets with James Bayard and assures him he won't replace the people who have worked so hard within his party, if he is elected. Also, in a strange twist, Alexander Hamilton wants Jefferson, his long time arch enemy on the political front, to win this election. On Feb 17, 1800, James Bayard lowers his loud Federalist voice and changes his vote from Aaron Burr to blank. The deadlock is broken and Jefferson becomes President, doubling the size of the country with the Louisiana Purchase and dispatching the Lewis and Clark Expedition to seek a northwest passageway to the Pacific Ocean. Aaron Burr believes Alexander Hamilton has attacked his honor. He challenges Hamilton to a duel, ultimately killing him with a bullet to his lower abdomen. The Federalist voice is greatly diminished.

In 1868, Articles of Impeachment against President Andrew Johnson were approved by the House of Representatives. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. After his assassination, Johnson took the Presidency. He reversed and vetoed many of Lincoln's legislation including the Freedman's Federal Program to help slaves and the Civil Rights Act. Johnson also fired Lincoln's popular Secretary of War. Edmund Ross would have the deciding vote on the Impeachment of Johnson. It would not come to pass because no one wanted Benjamin Wade to become the next President. Instead, General Ulysses S. Grant took the Presidency in the next election.

Almost a decade later, Rutherford B. Hayes is the Republican nominee who will continue Home Rule and ensure racial equality in the old Confederacy. Southern Democrats hate Republicans and want to end Home Rule. If elected, Samuel Tilden will destroy every multiracial institution in existence and there will be no protection for blacks; sharecropping will continue to enslave blacks as indentured servants. Justice Daniel Davis was to cast the critical vote of the Electoral Committee. When Davis realizes he no longer has independence from candidates Hayes and Tilden, he resigns. Justice Joseph Bradley is appointed to take his place and will cast his deciding vote for Hayes. Rutherford B. Hayes accepts the Presidency, but, it's bittersweet. His cabinet has convinced him he must make changes to appease the South. He accepts The Devil's Compromise. Against his belief system and moral focus he ends Home Rule and withdraws Union troops from the South. Education for the Negro and other Federal Programs disappeared completely leaving them to face decades of fear and intimidation. Their economic slavery continued well into the 20th Century.

In each chapter of this historical novel we see how the vote of one person continues to shape the lives of millions of people. The Treaty of Paris passed in 1896 by one vote, that of Senator Stephen White. The Philippine Islands, home to seven million people, would not be free for another half century and two world wars. The Filipinos were outraged; they wanted their freedom, now! Affirmative Action cases were weighted for a quarter of a century, from the 1970's to 2003. It was a period of social unrest and Justices were vexed as to the right thing to do about university admissions and job selection. Finally, social justice prevailed by one vote, that of Justice Blackman. And Sandra Day O'Connor in the year 2000, faced a complicated social issue, eventually, securing a woman's right to choose by her one vote. The Flag Protection Act of 1989 saw many court battles before becoming part of our patriotic legislation. There continues to be ongoing religious disputes about constitutional freedom of speech. And, the resentment of the Cubans residing in Florida helped place a dark horse like George W. Bush into the White House. A nation was mesmerized by the case of Elian Gonzales, an orphaned boy from Cuba seeking refuge in the United States. Democrats floundered in helping Elian so Cubans living in Florida retaliated and voted for Bush.

While author, Carole Eglash-Kosoff, has thoroughly researched and documented these 12 accounts of one vote events that changed the course of History, we can rest assured one vote continues to change the course of our nation, even now, within the Obama Administration. We've just recently seen how one vote ensured 35 million Americans medical coverage they did not previously have. We can see from these events that the American vote is here to stay and allows us a way to disagree without having to fight a war over every dispute. It allows us to resolve complex issues in a humane way as we strive to build a better society for all American citizens.

Author Carole Eglash-Kosoff, is a UCLA graduate, a teacher, a writer and a world traveler. What if the answer to this question was "yes it can?" In the United States, transpersonal psychology has evolved since the 1960's to include many aspects of religion and spirituality to provide a more holistic approach to well-being and healing. One of its fundamental building blocks is the belief that individuals have natural or basic goodness. This means they are not born fundamentally flawed or evil, only to spend a lifetime trying to become good enough to finally arrive at a place where they are worthy of accomplishment and love. Can this more holistic approach really help the average person to lead a more fulfilling life? Can it help people who are addicted to drugs, alcohol or any other substance to heal? Other cultures believe it can and does help their societies to live in healthier ways.

For centuries the Buddhist, the Sufi's, the Indians, the Taoist and other cultures have practiced the belief that individuals have at their core a natural goodness. Consider this quote, "goodness is like water to a Taoist; water flows to the lowest point automatically" Someone who acknowledges their natural goodness and is awake enough to realize they don't need to promote a self absorbed agenda arrives at the right decision automatically, without needing to think about it very much.

The renowned Buddhist master, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche coined the term "basic goodness" in the 1980's after he brought the Buddhist teachings to the west and presented them in a way that westerners could understand and readily accept. Basic goodness is as fundamental to the Buddhist teachings as is the practice of kindness to oneself and to others.

In contrast, many westerners believe they are born in sin, inherently flawed, and must constantly seek forgiveness in order to be worthy individuals. Some believe they will never be worthy. Where low self-esteem and addiction is a problem this belief can be a great hindrance to the well-being of that individual and to their over-all healing process.

Transpersonal Psychology like Buddhist Psychology seeks to restore a personal belief in natural goodness and wholeness so people can live better lives and feel worthy that they are equal to any life challenge they face. This is especially important in those cases of low self-esteem and addiction where self-love and self-confidence are needed just to begin the healing process.

If you or someone you love has forgotten how unique and important you are in the scheme of life, it is possible to restore a feeling of well-being and to be productive and happy again. Dances with Shadows is a story about a teenage girl growing up on a western farm. Author Kay Bartlett captures the daily existence of a, seemingly, average family who lives and plays together. The clan, as they call themselves, seems reasonably adjusted to their way of life, yet, they keep away from town folks as much as possible. They only interact with them when it is necessary for operating the farm. This changes when their youngest member, Shaeli Guttheridge, comes of age and decides she wants to experience new things. A typical adolescent girl, Shaeli likes shopping and going to town festivals and events. Shaeli also likes flirting with the young men in town, especially Michael who works at Trent’s Feed and Seed. But, Shaeli is not your average young girl. Shaeli is different. She and her family are something more—they are something more in the wildest way—they are Wolfen!

Being wolfen, Shaeli loves to run wild and free in the nearby forest. It’s in the forest that she experiences real freedom and adventure. It’s there that Shaeli falls in love with Michael while he hikes and enjoys fishing. In her human state, she visits with him at the lake and at Trent’s Feed and Seed. In her wolfen state, she often watches over him and keeps him safe from other wolves, wild animals, and traps set in the woods. There’s only one problem. Michael is bi-ped and bi-peds can cause problems for wolfen clans. Shaeli reasons she may someday have to run away to Montana, or some other exotic place, if she cannot have the man she really loves. Wolves choose their mates carefully and they mate for life. If Michael cannot choose her she would eventually leave the farm life behind for new adventures. That would protect her family. Only time will tell as Michael grows more and more curious about Shaeli’s and her family’s unusual habits.

In this novel, Author Kay Bartlett takes on man’s ancient fascination and curiosity of the nature of wolves. She does this from a feminine viewpoint creating a delightful and fun love story. Her wolfen characters have a lovable side, especially Shaeli who is beautiful, very intelligent, and strong. And, most of her family is benevolent and caring in spite of their basic wild natures. They experience family dysfunctions and power struggles just like those in human families. This allows a reader to connect with them in a way that is not expected and in a way that is not fear based. This fictional story is sure to capture the hearts of teenagers and adolescents, especially, those who love nature, and wild animals. I think this story will also attract readers who are romantic at heart and those who love wolves and the call of the wild. This is a story for anyone who has felt they existed in two worlds, but haven’t fit in either one. It is a story for those who fantasize about finding their place in life, running wild and free, and dancing out of the shadows with the one they love by their side.

Monsters Inside Me - TV Series Review

Monsters Inside Me is definitely a title for a TV Series that gets my attention. It’s not that I like knowing that microscopic monsters can enter our bodies or be ingested and grow inside our bodies. It’s more that I have a need to know about these things in order to protect myself better. Since I need to know rather than want to know, I make it a point to watch this show on a regular basis. I actually look forward to the new seasons because I want to keep up to date with the latest episodes.

The shows are very well put together; complete with a short history or summary of how a person has come in contact with their nemesis, whether it is a parasite, an amoeba, other type protozoa or insect that is causing the problem. The narrator for the show is usually well informed and there is normally a medical explanation for what is happening in the body once a person has become a host for whatever monster has invaded them. The medical graphics are informative and detailed in a way that an average person can understand what is happening in an infected body.

Many of the cases I’ve seen so far began outside the United States when a person had traveled or gone on vacation to a tropical or exotic place. Some shows focus on the southern regions of the United States, as well. Invariably, a tourist is bitten by an insect, or a microscopic entity, or some unseen thing enters their body somehow. They can enter through the nose, the mouth or even at the site of a hair follicle. Once inside a host the entity goes through a gestation period. Some gestation periods are long and can take years to cause a problem. Some never cause a problem because the body’s immune system is healthy and can fight off their attack. Other entities have a very short gestation period and can cause major problems in just a few weeks or even a few days. Sometimes they quickly kill their human host.

Some of the invading monsters have no preference for where they will reside once inside a hosts’ body. The show has broadcast parasites that bury themselves inside the liver, the lungs, and the intestines and even inside the brain. Many people who do not die are never healthy again, dependent on doctors and treatment for the rest of their lives.

While some of these cases are difficult to believe and difficult to watch, I find it worth watching. Watching this show can help us to avoid an invasion of a monster that can kill us. If knowledge is power, then I believe empowering myself with this kind of information can help me take care of myself in a world that is filled with threatening environmental problems. I recommend the show to anyone who travels, loves tropical areas, lives in tropical areas and those who just want to be informed about how to stay healthy and parasite free.

Author, Wisdom J.O.Y. Makano is a poet and a philosopher. He has worked a lifetime studying ancient sources of knowledge, the wisdom of the sages, religious text, philosophy, and other esoteric volumes. His extensive research and wealth of knowledge has now culminated into his first book, The Best Kept Secrets of Personal Magnetism. The principles herein are based on the Golden Rule, “treat others as you would like to be treated.” The author says this is the “finest rule of conduct and the key to influencing people.” He explains this ancient doctrine was made famous by Jesus Christ and is still “the highest principle in the remotest of societies,” and how this rule was also taught by prophets and ancient wise men from many sects including the Hebrews, Greek, Chinese and the Indians.

There are explanations for how to use the laws of human nature and the golden rule for dynamic social or business change. You see that integrity, gratitude, and a genuinely, “caring attitude” can open doors to the success of the practitioner. While Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill, and Og Mandino’s, The Greatest Salesman in the World had a business feel about them, The Best Kept Secrets of Personal Magnetism,written by Wisdom J.O.Y. Makano, has a more holistic feel from the moment you open the book. The book is warm, inviting, uplifting, and naturally motivating in the sense it offers new hope for whatever one wants to accomplish, whether that is great leadership, more charm and charisma, or just wanting to be a happier person. The author says his book is for anyone who wants to set themselves apart by developing their own personal magnetism, not for the purpose of manipulation, but for the purpose of sharing their gifts with the world. I believe it is also for the truth seeker, the philosopher, the teacher, the salesman and almost anyone who wants to improve any area of their life. In her book, Defining Moments she draws from this experience, her training and case studies to create a dynamic resource for those who seek personal growth from self-help sources. This volume was also written as a guide-book for today’s graduate student of clinical psychology.

For the individual, Defining Moments is a comfortable book, easy to read and filled with examples of unique insight into the human condition. It offers down-to-earth, practical advice on coping with complex human dilemmas. Since the beginning of creation man has struggled to understand his life in a way that made his day-to-day challenges more manageable. Our modern society is no exception. Depression, anxiety and anger exist in epidemic proportions and form the root causes for many of the problems we face as a community and a nation. Defining Moments offers a calm sea of alternative views and practical applications to help an individual to be more centered in their world and regain a sense of empowerment. When we observe nature with an open mind and an open heart it may reveal a solution we’ve been looking to find. And, we are encouraged to explore the wisdom our pets bring into our environment. They help us more often than we realize and give us true unconditional love. In addition, the author doesn’t shy away from tougher subjects facing our society; subjects like bullying and what can be done about it, and what our nation needs to become a great nation again. She allows her clients to speak out about this. She offers her own artistic approach too, and speculates what results we might see if our artists were given opportunities to solve more pressing and global concerns, at least to work with heads of states for more holistic solutions. She notes most artists do not seek fame and fortune, but, “an artist’s primary interest lies in making a difference by articulating what needs to be realized.”

Author Dorothea S. McArthur, PhD is also a wife and mother. And, she is an artist, herself. She draws, does sculpture, choral singing, gardening and she is a seasoned author with four other books to her credit. She is the co-author of the manual for the Roberts Apperception Test for Children (RATC). She has published Birth of a Self in Adulthood and she will soon publish Tomorrow’s Child and Love Beyond Love. I am amazed that one woman has accomplished so much in her life; also that her accomplishments have helped so many people to lead more productive lives. I believe her book, Defining Moments is a must read for anyone who loves psychology and self-help books. It is also a great and affordable resource for those seeking personal growth in almost any area of life. This book is also intended as a guidebook and reference for practicing psychologists who want to define their career path by learning from one of the most accomplished in the field of clinical psychology.

In 2020, I Want a Woman President by author, Lolu Adebayo, is a little book with a big message. It’s a book about women in leadership; it’s about women in politics; and ultimately it’s about our nation electing a woman President - It’s about a nation evolving and accepting that many women are capable and qualified to become Commander in Chief of our great nation. This small volume is designed to start a movement that promotes this idea across America.

The seriousness of this message is encased in a delightful rendition of the author’s life as he arrives in America, educates himself, and takes notice around him how women are not viewed as equal to men. This happens in school, in college, on the job, and ultimately in politics. He notices how women are still thought of as a “minority” when a closer look reveals they actually represent a strong “majority.” The author speculates what women might accomplish if our country perceived them as the majority they are and if they ruled as that majority, especially in politics.

We have to ask a few questions. Is it possible for us to live in a world where double standards for women are dissolved, where invisible walls are torn down, and women are considered great leaders? Can we achieve less male dominance without threat to men’s masculinity? If we could, would a true democracy evolve and thrive? It begins to feel possible as these chapters unfold and shows throughout history women have successfully ruled nations. Mostly, this responsibility has passed to women through their family legacies, but now, in the United States, we are talking about promoting women to our highest command through the voting process.

It is noted in the book many people feel women are not suited for the White House, at least not in our lifetime. The author challenges this and asks us to re-examine this belief in light of evidence to the contrary. He also challenges women to examine why they are uncomfortable in male dominated situations and why they are so quick to step aside and allow men to rule, to even encourage it.

I personally found it very difficult to disagree with many of the viewpoints of African author, Lolu Adebayo. He makes great points that support women in the presidency: there are, already, very strong women leaders in our military; women prove themselves to be great leaders in business, and women have the compassion to rule more from the heart and less from pure aggression. Also today’s woman is exceptionally skilled, educated, and capable of major responsibilities. I for one agree with the author, it is a perfect time to grant women the equality they deserve in the political arena. To do this, men must learn to be masculine enough to allow women the right to serve the world in a larger way. And, women must step up to the challenges they are called to face. If you agree, just want to be more informed, or you are not sure yet, grab a copy of this great book today and help, author Lolu Adebayo, create awareness and forward a political movement that could take our country forward to achieve this vision of, in 2020, I Want To See a Woman President-2^nd Edition. She has certainly met her match, but he will never know because he makes her very uncomfortable and he’s probably just interested in securing that CEO position anyway. Who will she recommend for the position if not Alex? And, who would want her father dead? There are so many questions and so few answers.

Sandi Perry is a native New Yorker and author of Come Fly With Me. She understands the socially elite perspective and it comes through in her writing. This isher second romance novel that is difficult to put down and very easy to read. Her book is engaging with sophisticated main characters that are realistic, fun-loving, and on-the-move; living jet-set lifestyles, yet they are also down-to-earth and discerning about what is really important in life. Deep down, Allison wants a true love even if it scares her to open up and be real with a potential husband. This is a story that has it all, love, romance, mystery, suspense, and intrigue until the very end. It’s a classic romantic fiction with a modern day setting complete with conflict, growth and resolution. In my estimation, Come Fly With Me is a wonderful eBook that will fly onto Kindles and eBooks and into the hands of romantic fiction lovers everywhere.

“Life During a Nation’s Death is a historical fiction set in the 2030’s-2041 period. The United States no longer competes on the world stage. After the Obama Presidency the Democratic Party and Republican Party stayed in gridlock until they completely fell apart. The middle class died and several versions of the parties revived themselves for a while. There were the Old Democrats, The Democratic-Worker Party, and the American Progressive Party. Several presidents tried to turn the country around, some more than others.

The Chinese realized America couldn’t pay back the money they owed and financed an independent candidate Leon Stinchcomb. He took office and immediately did away with Social Security and Medicare, actually blaming the elderly for the country’s debt problems. In 2032, Governor Martin Clifton Daye, nicknamed “Happy Daye,” became president. Daye’s shining achievement was dismantling the US into two regions and proposed our once great nation return to its roots and become the breadbasket of the world. The Chinese agreed and so it was declared. The USbecame little more than a third world country ruled by a World Union – China, India and Brazil. America now had two occupations, growing/selling marijuana and tobacco or milking cows and growing crops.

Everyday people were trying to find their place. They all had a story. A few evolve in this novel and stand out like pioneers of a regressed new order. There is Nancy and C.J., two elderly people who fight to hang on to their vision of the world. Also there is Kirby and Latasha, two kids, who should have had it all. Potter and Teddy have secrets all their own and who is Larry Crago anyway? Demure little Doreen is quite surprising in the end and you won’t forget Sheila Vonstein! She’s the stuff of legends, a woman like the world hasn’t seen before. Major Sheila Vonstein has taken out villages in Afghanistan and worked over the Taliban, too. With all she’s seen it makes no sense anymore and she isn’t sure it ever did. She’s a big blonde bombshell with killer legs. Booze and sex provide the backdrop for the games she likes to play. Rick, the ex-con in charge, what could go wrong there? Each of these people will cross paths as they struggle to survive in a world that has lost its greatness and only exists at the mercy of the World Union.

The author, Jeff Brooks, lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and knows about tobacco. He also knows his history and provides many references that enhance his story. This is a story about a “country gone wrong” in so many ways. Jeff Brooks’ message to the United States is so sad it becomes comical and he seems to be saying, we must “Learn from history,” otherwise we could witness first-hand the reality of a dark and dismal Life During a Nation’s Death.”

This is one political satire written for mature audiences only!

The Gathering Storm – In Book II of the Faenum Quest the Adventure Continues with Dave Cray, he is a prophet, an avatar, and a champion for good who becomes a legend. Dave and his comrades have left the evil Rajduki Empire. They all have had devastating experiences there, but forge onward with their crusade across the planet of Faenum. They must unite the diverse and warring races in order to defeat the evil emperor and survive the imperial battle that is coming soon. It’s a daunting task, as the people are hostile and have different cultures, morals, standards and belief systems. Dave and his small band of comrades worry they may not be ready for the ultimate war that looms on the horizon. When they are met with monumental challenges, Dave alone is undeterred. Against all odds, he provides benevolent leadership and wins the people over.

Dave unites people from the flat lands, the forests, the foothills and the coastal regions. He carries the message he gave to the Warlen tribes and the Rajduki refugees warning all of mortal peril; the elves, the dwarfs, the trolls, the Agai‘s, the sisterhood, and the confederation. “Join our mission or be annihilated by the evil master and his dark magicians” he said. The people worship Dave, but their hero is wounded inside. He feels awkward and overmatched compared to Wilphrus, a wizard from the first order and King of the High Council. Wilphrus no longer looks like a gnome and he has great magical presence, carrying a thick staff of power with rune carvings. Dave wonders if he has lost his beloved Jenna to the brilliant shape-shifting wizard.

Faenum is filled with prejudice. It’s a barbaric planet where the strong have no compassion for the weak. On Earth people pretend they care, pretend evil isn’t real, but not on Faenum. It’s a long slow process, but Dave accomplishes the impossible with confidence. Gradually the people come to accept the new order of life. They intermingle, learn new ways of doing things, while some marry their former foes and even “Bear,”Dave’s pet, has a family of baby deathcats! Yes, wonders never cease on Faenum, but Dave is sad because Jenna is no longer at his side and he has made a pact with Wilphrus not knowing what price he will ultimately pay for Wilphrus’s service.

The Gathering Storm –Book II is another fascinating read from The Faenum Quest Trilogy. Dave and his family are beacons of light on the planet of Faenum, yet they realize everyone has darkness in them. Through his characters, author Dennis K. Hausker brings a poignant message that even moral, principled, and decent people possess elements of darkness. As with Mortus- Book I of the trilogy, TheGathering Storm, Book II is an excellent book for lovers of epic, high and dark fantasy. Follow the champions of this story as they bravely continue into a cataclysmic battle between good, evil and an uncertain fate that takes place in The Faenum War-Book III.

Mortus - Book I of the Faenum Quest the adventure begins is a unique epic fantasy with high and dark fantasy elements. Author Dennis K. Hausker is realistic about the flawed and dark nature of society and allows this to come through in some of the characters he creates. But where great evil is found great good and virtue are also found. In this story Dave Cray and his comrades represent s this good. Dave is the hero who undertakes a hero’s journey, but he is only following his intuition and has no idea he is now on a life-long quest that will culminate into an ultimate battle between good and evil.

Dave lived on Earth until his mother died. Soon after an unknown uncle visited and convinced him to travel to the planet of Faenum. Once there Dave feels overwhelmed, unprepared, and without skills to help him face the many challenges and dangers he finds in this dark and evil environment. Amazingly, he overcomes each and every trial. No one is more astounded than Dave at his ability to do this. He realizes magical powers are assisting him and his powers are getting stronger day by day. His father had once been a great wizard and lived on Faenum in the land of Mortus. Dave sets out to find Mortus and gathers a band of unlikely comrades who feel compelled to journey to Mortus with him. None of them understands why they feel compelled to journey with Dave, they only know they must!

When Dave first landed on Faenum he all but crashed into Jenna’s camp. She’s the missing prima virga of the Warlen tribe. Jenna has fled her kingdom because Ragar fought for her hand and won. He is evil beyond belief and she will not marry him. Jenna and Dave start traveling together and soon meet Selane the white witch who has left her sisterhood. A giant mountain troll insists on protecting Selane and will not leave her side. Then there is Lissette, a supreme warrior elf, and her nemesis, Angus the Dwarf; a funny pair they are. And, Graile is the master bladesman who teaches Dave how to fight. They become a family and even adopt a deathcat as their pet. The deathcat is a fearsome animal part cat and part bear. With his powers Dave tames the deathcat to obey his every command. “Bear,” lets Jenna pet him like a kitten only to become ferocious again should an enemy approach the group.

Soon Dave falls in love with Jenna and wants to marry her. It’s forbidden since he is not a Warlen. He’s disappointed and often frustrated not knowing what to do about any of his problems. His powers keep growing until he supersedes his father as the most powerful wizard in the land of Mortus. He becomes a chieftain and a leader among the people although he does not really want the title. Everyone can see that Dave is a worthy hero- everyone except Dave that is. Often he is apprehensive about his life and what he should do next, but much to his amazement he is revered and loved by all. He gains the confidence of Jenna and her parents.
