Content marketers spend a lot of time coming up with the right keyword for an article, and we’re almost always disappointed because the keyword doesn’t perform to our expectations.

So what if you could outline a strategy to revive poorly performing webpages… improve the performance of good pages… and find hidden keywords in your own content?

We don’t profess to be SEO experts, but this is the true account of how we took a single page and more than tripled its page traffic with a straightforward keyword optimization exercise.

At SkilledUp, we develop curated learning lists of online courses and related resources for those who seek to enhance their job skills and further advance their careers. In April, we wrote an article called the the “50+ Best Free Excel Templates for Any Occasion” for our readers with a strong interest in business and finance. We built this article with the intent of going after the keyword “best free Excel templates.”

Thus, the keyword is strategically placed in the URL, the title, and in the first paragraph (in bits and pieces), like so:

This is textbook SEO, all the details of which can be found online for free with a few Google searches.

After hitting the publish button, it was time to play the waiting game. How many people would be lured to our little post?

Traffic slowly picked up, as you can [squint to] see here:

Initially, the page didn’t do much. We first suspected that the lagging performance was due to structural problems with our blog. See, we have different Learning Hubs, each with their own URL folder, and so if we tagged an article for multiple hubs, there were multiple instances of the page – which is notgood for SEO. In fact, it’s RFB for SEO.

So in May, we restructured the blog to eliminate duplicate links. Fixed that prob. And in June the piece popped back onto our radar.

It was starting to get 100 to 200 hits a day. Not too shabby for a young content piece, right?

Out of sheer curiosity – curiosity is always a good thing for startups – we did some further analysis to see what was driving the traffic…

Using Google Analytics, we found that, out of the page’s ~5,800 hits, 90% came from Google search. Since we haven’t done any paid marketing via Google or Social, this wasn’t a shocker – but it was still really interesting! I mean, 90% from organic search? Wow.

HOW-TO DETOUR: Follow these steps to get to a view like the above.

Within Google Analytics, go to the Content node in the sidebar.
The node will expand, providing more options. Select Site Content > All Pages.
Use the search filter (just below the traffic chart, on the right-hand side of the toolbar) to find the target page. You can use URL or page title for thePrimary Dimension of comparison.
One the left-hand side of the toolbar, use the Secondary Dimension drop-down to add a second comparison variable. In this case, Traffic Sources > Source.

The fact that people were spending an average of 24 minutes on the page validated that the content was quite useful.

We were curious as to which keyword searches were bringing readers to the page, so we checked out what search queries were bringing us this traffic…

(If you followed the “How-To Detour” above, you’d be able to get to this data by changing the Secondary Dimension to Traffic Sources > Keyword.)

Bear with me while I dive a bit into the GA data… Looking at the top 10 to 15 records, we immediately noticed the top 2 “queries” amounted to 3,664 clicks (60% of queries).

However, these 2 records are “blanks,” reflecting the effect of secured search – and we were left with only 40% to analyze…

Is this something you’ve encountered?–the frustration of “not provided”?

It’s easy to get annoyed by the lack of info about the majority of your traffic… but there’s actually a lot you can do by analyzing what little Google tells you…

Here’s what we noticed. We saw 4 variations of our keyword in the top 5 keywords: “excel templates,” “free excel templates,” “excel templates free,”and “best excel templates.” The #3 spot was an interloper — “excel dashboard templates.” (Incidentally, a dashboard is a kind of excel template, and the word was mentioned 8 times in the original article.)

NOTE: By default, you will only see the top 10 records. To expand this list, on the bottom right of the traffic readout, find the Show Rows drop down – and toggle from 10 to 25 (or as much as needed) to see more queries and data.

In total, there were 1,542 queries.

We sifted through this list and found that 271 (17.6%) terms contained theword “dashboard.” Interesting… A keyword optimization opportunity?

While 17.6% doesn’t seem like a lot, it’s worth pointing out that after the top 25 terms, the click volume quickly drops off to 1 click per term. Furthermore, in those top 25 terms, the term “dashboard” was present 13 times.

So we felt confident that “dashboard” was a highly relevant term, and we decided to go back and add it to the URL and title. For good measure, we peppered “dashboard” into the introductory paragraph 3 more times. Check it out:

Now it was time to play the Keyword Optimization Waiting Game… again.

This time, however, we didn’t have to wait very long…

In fact, the effects were immediate. Take a look:

Our traffic ticked up rather quickly! Prior to the change, the high water mark was 221 clicks per day. Three days later, the page saw 327 clicks, or a 47% increase.

Six days later, it exceeded 400, representing an 82% increase.

In the following weeks, it continued to hit new highs of 473 clicks followed by 565.

Just last week, we achieved a new record at 761 clicks in one day.

Not only can this technique help you revive a poorly performing article, but it can also help you generate new ideas. Rather than doing keyword query research on a single page, you can do it for your whole site and see how people are finding you. You may be very surprised at the treasure trove of information you will find.

After reading this article, I really hope you’ll repeat the steps outlined here. Google Analytics is filled with hidden keyword opportunities – and now you know 1 more way to find ‘em.

The Steps Are Only Good If You Follow ‘Em

Naturally, proceed with caution – because this optimization strategy may not work for every single article out there…

Case in point: we tried something similar on another piece, and it didn’tproduce the same wondrous effects. But! But, let me point out that, in that case, we made changes based on intuition, not on data – and the change had a negative effect. So, before going ahead and making some drastic changes to your articles, make sure to consider these tips:

Never make assumptions. Let the data dictate your decisions.
Make sure you have enough data to make a conclusive decision. The more organic search traffic you have, the easier this will be. If the daily traffic is not significant, you can expand the time parameters to get more data.
Look out for articles that could have a cluster of closely related synonym keywords. Google is supposed to catch synonyms but sometimes the intent is different enough to justify a separate keyword.
Don’t get too greedy. If you’ve hit the nail on the head the first time, you may not find additional opportunities. We’ve visited some of our most heavily trafficked pages, only to find 2-3 keyword variations, similar to our first pick.
If your keyword update doesn’t work, sweep it under the rug and keep moving. Revert back to the way it was or try something new.

That being said, there is probably a pot of gold waiting for you in your Google Analytics query data…

My Blogger Blog is marked as spam? what should I do?

There might be people who have faced an embarrassing experience when their blog was suddenly removed/deleted/disabled/spammed by Blogger.com. This experience is already faced by us when OnlineUstaad.com was hosted on blogger and on 22th April, 2013 it was disabled by blogger, and we were not able to do anything instantly. While we took every single measure to restore our blog on the same platform (Blogger.com) but we failed because it took many days for them to review our blog which was a one and half year blog having more than 270 posts published. Still, I’m waiting forblogger to complete the review of my blog and it is about 7th Month going on since the incident took place. What I actually did to restore my blog to normal will be shared with you via this post. But remember, my all struggles didn’t get restored my blog back. But of course, this is the procedure you can follow to restore your blog back. I still don’t know what happened with me on blogger. But I’ll tell you the major reasons when your blog may be spammed/disabled/removed by blogger. So you should avoid them.

What should you do when your blog is spammed/removed?

If your blog is marked as spam or removed by Blogger, but you still can access to your blogger account then you’ll see a message saying “Your blog was marked as spam by automatic classification system”. So when you see this message next to your blog which is removed and not opening now, so you must also see an option with that blog saying “Restore this blog“.

You have to take 2 instant steps in order to restore your blog back to normal, first of all, click on“Restore this blog” which appears next to your deleted blog, and just enter the captcha and email you want blogger team to contact you back. After doing so, go to the following link and start a new thread for your issue, put everything about your blog there and request for its restoration and review process. Use a polite language there and don’t call other people or your friends to participate in the discussion because it will be harder for them to answer every question. There are top contributors and even specialist from blogger who will guide you further to restore your blog to normal, while you have to be patience in this regard. So we have added the Css to style the widget and the script to make it work. Now all we have to do is to add the widget's code to the blog sidebar in a Html/Javascript gadget:

The following drop down menu is made only with CSS, is a horizontal menu with sub-tabs and the right side has a rounded search. A menu is handy for those who do not require complex menus or prefer not to use one that requires scripts and/or too many images, also theinstallation and customization is quite simple, and to top it off is quite functional.

Prior to doing anything, if you are using a Template made through Blogger Template Designer, then you should consider doing these changes in the template, otherwise the menu might not be displayed correctly:

From your Blogger's Dashboard, go to Template (make a backup < see the screenshot) > Edit HTML:

How To Add Social Media Icons To Blogger Header

This tutorial will help you to add social media icons in the top right corner of the page which could increases the likelihood that readers can follow through the various social networks. There are several ways to do this, like adding a new widget section to the blog header but now, we'll do it using an unordered list that uses icons of Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and blog feed, and as a bonus, the icons will rotate when you hover over them.

Step 1. From your Blogger dashboard, go to Template and click on theEdit HTML button:

Customization

- Change what's in red with your usernames and id: the first is your Facebook username, the second is that ofTwitter, in the third you should change the X by the ID of your Google+ profile and in the fourth you will put the name of your blog.
- To change the icons, just replace the urls in blue with the ones of your images.
- You can add more icons if you want, you just have to add before </ul></div> a line like this for each extra icon you want:

Step 5. Finally, Save the Template to apply the changes.

The effect is done with CSS3, so this effect will not work in older browsers.

This is a very nice horizontal menu in which its sub-tabs are displayed in two columns and is also made with CSS, without any scripts.

The "advantage" so to speak, is that the sub-tabs when arranged in two columns are not very long, so it will be neat and less space along. You can see an example here:

4 Different Styles For The Popular Posts Widget

Blogger allows us to easily add a "Popular Posts" widget, that we select from its list of gadgets, and we can do that by going to the "Layout" of our Blog.

This gadget, as the name implies, shows which are the most visited blog posts, and you can set it to display the info you want in four possible combinations: (1) only the title of the post, (2) a thumbnail of the image and the post title, (3) post title with a summary, and (4) post title with a thumbnail and a post snippet.

This is an element that you shouldn't miss in your blog because it encourages your visitors to navigate through your content, which can result in higher income if you're monetizing your blog because it wouldgenerate an increase in the number of pages visited, and in turn, can attract the users' interest to subscribe to the blog and to read interesting content.

Preliminary steps: Add the gadget, if you haven't done it yet.

1. Select the "Layout" tab and add the "Popular Posts" gadget in that part of your blog you want to appear, such as in your sidebar, by clicking on "Add a Gadget".

2. Configure the widget to show only the post titles. You can do this by clicking on the "image thumbnail" and "snippet" checkboxes, as shown in the following image.

3. After configuring the widget, save the changes by clicking on Save, and then Save arrangement.

How to add the CSS to create the style of the Popular Posts widget

1. Choose a style, then copy the CSS that appears below the image that shows the style.

2. Select the "Template" tab, then click on Customize > Advanced > Add CSS and then paste the CSS style thatyou like the most.

3. Once you add the CSS, Save changes by clicking on the "Apply to Blog" button.

And that's it! I've already customized the popular posts widget, when it only shows post titles.

Final Notes

All the CSS is valid. I just have to mention that the numbering is not visible in Internet Explorer 7, since that version of the browser does not support properties that make the numbers appear. For example in the 4th style, the circles look squared in IE8 and earlier versions since, these versions do not support a property that makes them look as circles.

Fonts will be inherited from the template, since they have not been declared in the CSS.
