Mowgli Flag Plush Sign

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 06 Nov 2015 01:54:00 +0000

I made this awesome flag for my all-time fave company Mowgli Surf run by my boyfriend Alex. Plush signs are one of my favorite things to make. They make me think of all of those amazing animal themed plush wall hangings from my childhood that for some reason fell out of style. If I ever have a moment to do something about it you bet I'll bring them back!

This plush flag is based off of a patch design I also did for Mowgli that embodies fun in the sun but with the colors switched around so the background wasn't black. Check out the process below!

Dyed sweatshirt fleece all ready to be cut out:

For the letters I size them on the computer and them print and cut them out. If they are too large I just tape them together.

Fun cutout fabric detail with the sweatshirt fleece. I find that this is the best fabric to work with because it has a bit more body and also doesn't fray.

For the background I used a jade linen fabric that I found, didn't even have to dye it! I cut out the shape and sewed it together with a back piece and a layer of batting which I then turned inside out...

Next I placed all of the cut out fleece letters and shapes to be sewn on

Detail of the placed shapes:

And then I got to sewing!

Look at me go!

Here's the final version hanging in the Mowgli booth at Agenda Las Vegas!

Downtown Photo Shoot with Linnea

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 23 Oct 2015 00:45:00 +0000

I recently did another shoot with Linnea Bullion in downtown LA. The studio we shot in had a second level balcony so we had fun doing some birds eye shots. Definitely a favorite with tons of gems to pick from!

New Website Design

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 16 Oct 2015 00:44:00 +0000

It was time for an upgrade! I wanted internet aficionados the world over to be able to go to Mokuyobi.com and have an easy user experience. I changed the design to be a more simple one page design separated into categories by bag silhouette. A menu at the top helps you to navigate the long list and brings you down to whatever product category section you select. When you click on an item it opens within the same page and when you scroll away from that product it collapses making it easier to keep browsing and not having to constantly hit the back button to return to the main page. The new checkout design lets you see all of the images of the product in your cart as you add them so you can overview your purchase. Give it a whirl!

Pop Up Promo Art

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 09 Oct 2015 00:43:00 +0000

During our pop up at Space 15 Twenty Mokuyobi and Mowgli had a few musical events to bring people out. For these events myself and Philip from Mowgli made a series of posters promoting the musical guests. Our main poster which they put up to promote the event before it launched was drawn by Philip and colored and arranged by me showcasing some of the products that were available in the pop up. Check out all of the different events we had below...

Mowgliyobi: The Future of Surf

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Thu, 24 Sep 2015 23:40:00 +0000

Mowgliyobi: the best of Mokuyobi and Mowgli combined! With our collaboration line we wanted to do something different (of course) that combined Mokuyobi's design with Mowgli's unique processes. We all brainstormed together about ideas and pattern/color/shapes. I did a bunch of sketches for t-shirts and shorts and we edited the line down from there.

In addition to the clothes we did a collaboration backpack with an amazing spiral tie dye on nylon and turned it into a big pocket. For our branding I designed a logo which we made into a patch. See below for the entire process of sketches to finals! Available both at Mokuyobi and Mowgli!

Mokuyobi x Mowgli Pop Up Opening

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 18 Sep 2015 00:43:00 +0000

Opening night! Thanks to everyone who came out to the event! We had Aaron Coyes from Peaking Lights do a DJ set and it was sponsored by PBR for most of your beverage needs. We also got Cactus Cooler aka straight sugar.

We gave a goodie bag with patches and stickers to the first 50 people who came and we offered free patch sewing at the event! I brought my home sewing machine and made everyone's dreams come true. See the entire finished space in the photos below! We were thrilled with how it came out. Walking into the space when it was all done was like opening the doors to the inside of the factory where they make fun. Well what are you waiting for? See for yourself!

Mokuyobi x Mowgli Pop Up Prep

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Thu, 10 Sep 2015 23:21:00 +0000

It's been very exciting and challenging working with Urban Outfitters to prepare for the pop up with Mowgli. It's both of our first times designing an entire retail space to stuff with our goods. Space 15 Twenty is building pretty much whatever we want in the space which is awesome but when the possibilities are almost endless it can be hard to figure out a clear vision. Regardless I think we did a pretty kickass job!

I designed some Mowgli x Mokuyobi branded type for them to paint on the front wall by the entrance. We got to see it in progress when we stopped by the space one day. We separated the parts of the store into categories with large painted boxes and had signs painted to divide up the areas: bags, patches, hats, fitting room, etc. For the patch area I mocked up a giant peg board and two mini peg boards to use as a merchandise rack. You can see the mock up and final build out below before all of the product was put up.

We wanted the employees of the pop up to wear a uniform to be easily spotted so we bought two plain jean vests with frayed sleeves which I dyed yellow and secured the sleeves by finishing the raw edge with hot pinked red/orange binding tape. Philip did a rad paper cut that we used in our proposal but also made into 2" buttons to put on the vests and to wear ourselves!

Mokuyobi x Mowgli Pop Up Papercut

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 04 Sep 2015 00:42:00 +0000

Mokuyobi and Mowgli have been planning a month long pop up shop at Urban Outfitter's Space 15 Twenty! We will be launching new products and are having some musical guests for the event. Part of the process has been making some promotional images that both Mowgli and I have contributed.

For the opening party promo I made an abstract paper cut with some crazy cool colors and shapes and hand cut out the Mowgli x Mokuyobi type. I think it turned out great! See below for more photos of different angles and detail shots!

Birthday Pouch for Kristin

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 28 Aug 2015 00:42:00 +0000

Giving someone a handmade gift for their birthday is something that I really enjoy doing. It's fun for me to think of something I think they would like and and use I imagine it's fun for them having a product that was made specifically for them and is one of a kind!

My friend Kristin had a bar hopping party in downtown LA with a Hawaiian theme. To prepare we went to an amazing Hawaiian clothing store in Downey, CA called Exotical! It had everything in authentic Hawaiian wear you could ever want. I strongly encourage you to check it out! But first, have a look at this fun color block zip pouch I made for Kristin below...

Papa's Tote

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 07 Aug 2015 00:41:00 +0000

No better fans than your own family. My Papa (dad's dad) was looking for a bag to carry around to hold all of his essentials for his hearing aid equipment, hat, glasses case, etc. when he goes out. Who better to give him what he needs than his very own sew capable granddaughter?!

I made him a simple tote with a bright lining so he could easily see what was in the bag with a soft velcro closure and nylon webbing handles. Gotta have it branded so I added a Soda Jerk patch for old time-y's sake! Check out that Mokuyobi custom hangtag! Such a rare breed.

Artists You Should Know: Yukai Du

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 24 Jul 2015 00:40:00 +0000

More talented artists from the reaches of the internet! I was delighted to stumble across Yukai Du recently, an illustrator from Guangzhou, China who lives and works in London. The color palettes she uses mixed with the soft edges of her lines make her work a treat for the eyes! Check her out on instagram here and see more below!

Whatever Lab

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 17 Jul 2015 00:40:00 +0000

I got commissioned to do another quilted flag by the significant other of one of the people I made the Future Hits flag for! Formerly the Kite Collective, Whatever Lab is the name of a project by a teaching artist that works on facilitating creative projects to draw attention to the senses and the outdoor.

Below is my sketch of the flag and then follow the progress below that! I cut the text out of white jersey and machine stitched the edges. Each shape I cut out, sewed, turned inside out, and top stitched all over the flag filling it in piece by piece. Once the front was done I cut out the top section, layered the front, back, and quilt filling and then sewed it all together with tabs on the back to hang.

Embroidered Back Patches

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 10 Jul 2015 00:39:00 +0000

I took some of the most awesome regular sized Mokuyobi patches and blew them up into giant embroidered patches so you can sport them on the back of your jean jacket or vest! The three winners were Summer Burger, Galaxy Planet, and Watermelon. They are all available in the Mokuyobi Store!

The Boroughs Chocolate Bar

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 03 Jul 2015 00:39:00 +0000

The bars are made exclusively for The Boroughs where they offer three flavors: Fruit & Nut and Cherry & Coconut are wrapped in art by Sandra Eterovic and Molly Rose Dyson respectively. The third type, milk chocolate mixed with colorful popping candy is wrapped in my Future Progression print. It's a popping treat! Check it out here!

Golden Birthday Card

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Fri, 05 Jun 2015 00:37:00 +0000

Every year I send my good friend Dustin a birthday card. He is exactly one month older than me. I like to make him a little something fun each year and this year was especially special because it's both of our Golden birthdays. If you are unaware, a Golden birthday is when you turn the age of the day of the month you were born on and for both of us that is 28 because we were born on the 28th or our respective months. It's not as exciting for people who were born in the beginning of the month and most of the time they are unaware of this fun birthday bonus but I've been waiting 28 years for this one so I'm pretty pumped. It's my lucky number!

I started with a metallic golden paper which I cut into card size and folded in half. Then I used a x-acto knife to cut out the number 28, a party hat, and a bunch of confetti shapes which I filled with colored paper by taping it to the back of the card. I made the party hat stripey and cut some fun drip shapes for the number cut out. I packed it super securely in a mailing folder and covered it in colorful washi tape. Check out the work in progress and final photos. I had a good time making this! Although reflective surfaces are certainly a challenge to photograph!

10 x 10 Patches

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Thu, 28 May 2015 06:15:00 +0000

I did a really fun custom patch pack project for Korea's 10 x 10 store. They wanted a pack of 5 patches to sell all together with different themes: holiday, plants, dessert, animals, and circus! I did a bunch of sketches and ended up settling on respectively, an Ugly Holiday Sweater, Succulent Society, Triple Scoop Ice Cream, Llama Drama, and A Big Top Tent complete with blue lion! You can find them here! Check out the patches and llama vector art below along with some of the images from the 10 x 10 website!

Custom Mega Backpack

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Thu, 21 May 2015 06:06:00 +0000

Another satisfied customer. The same person that I made the custom laptop case for was such a fan that she requested another custom item for a trip to Bangkok and Seoul. This time a backpack! But not just any backpack, a custom version of our Mega Backpack with custom colors and pockets. I added a water bottle pocket and an extra 3D front pocket with a space explorer patch detail. There's also a secret front inside pocket for a passport. Check out the sketch vs. the final and scroll down to see her photos of the bag in action accompanied by the Camp Bag!

Topanga Photoshoot

noreply@blogger.com (Julie Pinzur) — Wed, 29 Apr 2015 06:00:00 +0000

Had a blast shooting with the talented Linnea Bullion (you must check out the selfies photo section on her site) for ad and instagram photos featuring some new products. We took a trip to the beautiful Topanga State Park and took some nature filled shots and used the patched up and dyed jackets from the last post which turned out super well. I had fun art directing on this one and got some shots I've been wanting to get for a while. Have a look!
